CHRISTMAS IN COALVILLE THOUSANDS ENJOY FESTIVE EVENT Saturday 21st November brought the community together at the annual Christmas in Coalville event organised by North West Leicestershire District Council and the Coalville Town Team.

The Town Team’s Food and Drink Festival kicked off at 9am, delivering a wide array of delightful beverages and culinary treats in the Belvior Shopping Centre. Thousands of people visited the event savouring everything from German sausages and gourmet burgers to flavoured and smoked cheese and award winning pies. Paul Tallett, Chair of the Coalville Town Team, said “The members of the Coalville Town Team have worked hard to bring about our third Food, Drink and Music Festival in the Belvoir Shopping Precinct. We all want to thank the traders and the members of the public for their continued support.”

At 1pm the event fell quiet as everyone stopped to remember local school-girl Kayleigh Haywood. Purple memorial ribbons could be seen adorning Christmas trees and lampposts as a mark of community support for Kayleigh’s family, who attended the event.

From 1.30pm North West Leicestershire District Council’s Christmas light switch-on event got underway at the market.

Thousands turned up to join in the activities and Christmas fun as they enjoyed performances from various choirs, Century Theatre Panto stars, Jiggy and the finale courtesy of The Voice star Sheena McHugh.

Visitors also enjoyed photos with reindeer, received a free gift from Santa and enjoyed Woodies Owls in the Market Hall.

After an impressive vocal display from Sheena, the lights were switched on bathing the town of Coalville in the warm light of Christmas. To finish off the day a firework display illuminated the night sky as the crowds looked on. Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said “It was such a wonderful day. To see so many people out in Coalville enjoying the Food and Drink Festival put on by the Coalville Town Team and then the lights and performances organised by the council was just fantastic. Christmas is all about coming together and celebrating as a community and we’ve had some lovely comments about both events.”

LOROS is encouraging everyone to take part in Jolly Jumper Day this December and raise vital funds for the Hospice over the Festive season. From businesses, to schools, organisations and universities, the Groby Road charity is inviting everyone to dig out their favourite Christmas jumpers for LOROS next month.

The campaign is simple: all LOROS is asking is for you to pick any day in December to be your ‘Jolly Jumper Day’, then encourage all of your peers and colleagues to wear their Festive knits and donate £1 to the Hospice.

LOROS Fundraising Co-ordinator Magdalena Korytkowska said: “Get in the Festive spirit while raising money for charity this Christmas by taking part in our annual Jolly Jumper Day. Whether it’s a simple Santa jumper you will be wearing, or a glittery knit complete with fairy lights and tinsel – we want to see everyone donning their Christmas jumpers for LOROS this December.”

And there is no need to stop there – why not organise a party at home or hit the town with friends, all dressed in your festive best for LOROS. Magda added “Campaigns like these are a great example of how easy it is to give something back.”

Market Bosworth Agricultural, Horticultural and Equestrian Society presented the funds raised in 2015 prior to the AGM on 18th November.

Jennifer Leach of Rainbows Hospice for children and young people received a cheque for £2,000 from the funds raised by the Country Show held on 5 July. The money is a small but significant contribution to Rainbow's plans for a major refurbishment of the reception area so that children and families feel welcome from the moment they arrive at the Hospice.

Java, a potential guide dog mother, brought along Mike Goodall the Treasurer of Leicestershire & Rutland Fundraising Group and Elaine Berry, the group's secretary, to receive a donation of £1,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind. The money was raised at the Beagle Racing evening held prior to the Show on 3 July. There are 109

guide dog users in Leicestershire & Rutland and each dog costs approximately £30,000 to train so every penny counts.

At the AGM Geoff Newey was elected president for a second year and Gill Schofield was voted as a new vice president in recognition of her years of work organising the Flower Show. Henry Mumford agreed to continue as Society Chair and Show Director, Graham Pickering remains as Treasurer with Helen Earp as Secretary.

Plans for next year's show are already underway with the American Civil War Society providing a display as will the vintage tractors and agricultural machinery alongside the heavy horse and side saddle classes.

NEW APP LAUNCHED AT HERMITAGE AND HOOD PARK LEISURE CENTRES The beginning of November saw Hermitage and Hood Park Leisure Centres launch their new leisure app.

Linking into the leisure centres booking system, the App is designed to make the booking of and paying for activities at both leisure centres easier so that they can book on the go easily.

Since going live the App has been downloaded 115 times and opened 868 in the first week alone.

Customer feedback so far is that the App is very easy to use and is a great improvement to booking at the leisure centres and seeing what court and class spaces are available.

The App is available to download both on Google Play Store and the App Store and can be found by searching for NWL Leisure.

To use the App customers must be registered at the leisure centres so that they can have a User ID and PIN. To register to use the App, customers can do this by visiting www.nwleics.gov.uk/ leisurebookings and following the instruction under ‘New User’.

SCHOOL MUSICAL ROCKS Ashby School’s production of hit Queen musical ‘We Will Rock You’ has been captivating audiences in the run-up to Christmas.

The show featured some outstanding performances, eye-grabbing costumes and the innovative use of technology – include mobile phones - to give a unique Ashby twist to the storyline.

More than 50 students took part in the production, both onstage and behind the scenes. The five performances were preceded by a special show for students from local high schools and primary schools.

Director Ali Jackson said “The students involved in the show worked incredibly hard and achieved fabulous results. We are so happy with the way it turned out and with the response we got from audiences.”

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN WILDLIFE? Did you know there is a local club for folks who share this interest ?

It meets on the First Friday of the month, from September through until April, at 7.30 pm in the Marlene Reid Centre, 85 Belvoir Road, Coalville. Each meeting has a speaker who will show their pictures and explain about the wildlife they are interested in.

These presentations cover birds, insects, mammals and flowers - usually seen locally, though sometimes further afield.

In the summer months we organise trips to local reserves to show where the wildlife can be found.

The club was started by wellknown local Naturalist called Peter Williams, so the club is named after him. Sadly, Peter died a couple of years ago, but his son, Richard Williams, is now our President.

If you think you would enjoy coming to our meetings and learning more about Wildlife, then please feel free to come as a visitor and suss us out ! If you already know a lot about wildlife and would enjoy sharing your knowledge with us, then please come along! Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business, said “This is an incentive for people to go into town centres to do their Christmas shopping. COMMUNITY CELEBRATES ELLISTOWN’S NEW SPORTS ZONE

INTRODUCING YOUR LOCAL PROFESSIONAL BOXING CHAMPION Louis Norman known by local boxing fans as "2 SWEET", Louis is 21 years of age and has aspirations of being a World Champion Professional Boxer.

He first put a pair of boxing gloves on at the age of 3 years old, following his dad, Shaun Norman around different gyms while he was training as he was a former professional fighter.

On Saturday 7 November 2015 local MP Andrew Bridgen joined parish councillors, funders and members of the community for the official opening of Ellistown’s new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).

After a wet start to the day, the sun came out in time for youngsters to take part in a sports session in the new facility, led by North West Leicestershire District Council.

Ellistown and Battleflat Parish Council led the project to create the MUGA on the South Street Playing Fields. It is available for use by people of all ages and abilities, especially young people.

Funding for the MUGA, which has been built by Wicksteed Ltd, has come from The Veolia Environmental Trust who awarded a grant of £39,000 through the Landfill Communities Fund, North West Leicestershire Council who awarded £20,000 through the ‘£20,000 for Seven’ grant scheme, and Ellistown and Battleflat Parish Council who awarded £999.

Parish Clerk, Paul Goodman, says, “This facility will really fill a gap for the local community and we are delighted that it is now open.

LOUGHBOROUGH CARILLON HELP WANTED! On YouTube there are dozens of British Army training films from the 1950s and 60s but try as I might I cannot find out where to get hold of them.

There is nowhere else for young people to meet up and participate in positive activities. The MUGA will be a focal point for teenagers and the wider community, providing a safe place where they can gather, away from houses, and practise informal sport. We hope that there will be a subsequent reduction in anti-social behaviour.

“The MUGA will also be used by younger children and adults, bringing the whole community together.”

Andrew Bridgen MP says, “I am pleased to be a part of the sports zones official launch and congratulate all of the parties that came together to support this project for the local community.

The benefits are strong both offering a facility for young people, engaging them in positive and healthy activities. As well as offering a hub where the local community can join together.”

The Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, Paul Taylor, adds, “This facility will provide a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to socialise and exercise. I hope that the MUGA is used and enjoyed for many years to come.”

He opened his own gym 13 years ago and since then has not been out of the gym through dedication and determination. When he turned 14 he thought it was the right time to start fighting so started amateur. Having 39 fights won 24 lost 15, won Midlands titles and won a national title.

To be professional in Britain you have to be 18 years old or above, Louis only went to a professional gym to get extra training but when he was told that he was good enough to turn over to the paid ranks, on his 18th birthday he signed the contracts.

Louis has had a successful career so far, competing for 3 title won all 3 of them, British Masters, International Master and English title, having had 12 fights: 10 wins with 1 draw and only 1 blemish on his record which was on the undercard of Anthony Joshua fight live on Skysports at the O2 Arena London where unfortunately, had his first defeat which was a learning curve. Louis will continue on his journey of being a World Champion.

Salted Caramel AND Apple Rolls Part Danish pastry, part sticky bun, these upmarket tea-time rolls are simply delicious FOR THE FILLING

• 200g/7oz caster sugar • 1 tbsp water • 200ml/7fl oz whipping cream • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped into small cubes • 3/4 tsp sea salt

FOR THE DOUGH

• 250ml/8½fl oz full-fat milk • 25g/1oz butter • 500g/1lb strong white flour 1tsp salt • 1 x 7g/¼oz sachet fast-action dried yeast • vegetable oil, for greasing

METHOD

For the filling, heat the sugar and water in a large saucepan set over a medium heat until the sugar melts and forms a caramel. (Do not stir the caramel.)

Meanwhile, gently warm the cream in a saucepan. Carefully, add one-third of the cream to the caramel and, once the bubbling has subsided, whisk in the remaining cream and sea salt.

Pour the mixture into a bowl and set aside until completely cooked.

For the dough, warm the milk and butter in a saucepan until the butter has melted and the mixture is lukewarm.

Choosing Garden Trees We’ve had a fairly dry autumn so far although it is now cooling off with misty mornings and showery spells. The bonus of this time of year is the soil still has some warmth from the summer and the soil is moist without being waterlogged. It’s the perfect conditions for planting all manner of plants whether they are container grown, loose bulbs or bare-root.

We’ll soon see trees being offered by nurseries garden centres.

Planted now whilst the weather is favourable, they have the opportunity to establish and settle in before the demanding spring and summer season is upon us.

There are several forms to look out for: Bare-root plants - The term bare-root applies to plants which have been grown in a field for several years before being lifted and the soil removed from their roots. Although this sounds like a brutal treatment, the plants cope perfectly well and you’ll also find that bare-root plants are the cheaper option.

Container grown - Container grown plants are a more widely available option. They tend to be more expensive but establish well and can be a safer option if you’re not green fingered. Look for well rooted plants which look health and have no signs of dead branches or diseases on the stems.

With the options reviewed, what varieties are there available to fit small to medium sized gardens?

Well there are lots to choose from, but I favour the following as they provide several seasons of interest.

Japanese Acers - There are so many varieties of these maples offered by nurseries, each with a different leaf shape, habit or colour. Ideal for growing in pots these prefer slightly acidic compost when planting. Heights vary but most are slow growing and make good trees for small – medium gardens. These are best bought container grown.

Hawthorn (aka Crataegus) - there are some lovely ornamental forms which are hardy, will tolerate less than ideal soil conditions and grow to make dense trees of around 12-18ft. Crateagus ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ has rich double pink blooms in early spring and golden foliage in autumn. Crataegus × lavalleei ‘Carrierei’ has large glossy leaves from March right through to December, white blooms in spring followed by masses of cherry sized orange berries in the autumn – a great tree for small gardens.

Ornamental Cherries (aka Prunus) – There are so many varieties available but I favour the simple forms like Prunus ‘Okame’ which flowers in Feb-March and the large ‘Tai Haku’ which is smothered in very large white blooms in spring. Both have fiery autumnal foliage colour.

It is surprising how the vertical structure of a tree can change the look of a garden. Visit your local centre/nursery to see what catches your eye. Christmas will soon me here so next month I’ll be looking at how to spruce up the home with festive table decorations.

Root-balled plants are also an option. These are grown in a field like the bare-root plants but when they are lifted the soil around the roots is kept intact and then wrapped with hessian to protect it. Root-balling is generally carried out for evergreens rather than deciduous trees. Ensure that the root-balls have not been allowed to dry out at the nursery or prior to planting, otherwise they will struggle to establish and may drop their leaves in spring. So beware!

SPORTS AWARDS - A CELEBRATION OF THE EXCEPTIONAL AND INSPIRING

WORKING TOGETHER TO KEEP THE PUBLIC SAFE THIS CHRISTMAS Organisations from all over the district including police, the district council, street pastors and Pubwatch scheme members met recently to discuss how they can keep the public safe over the coming festive period.

This annual meeting brought together 39 representatives from various organisations that have direct contact with the public to discuss how best to keep them safe over Christmas. Workshop exercises looked at the best ways to interact with someone who has been drinking and methods of how to deal with and care for people when they’re in a vulnerable state.

The exceptional and inspiring sports personalities were out in force on Thursday 29 November for the annual North West Leicestershire Sports Awards hosted by Conkers. It was an evening for celebrating the amazing sporting achievements of sportsmen and women across the district.

The evening saw more than 300 people in attendance including 18 local schools. Kombat Breakers provided a mix of breakdance and street in an exciting fusion of eye catching entertainment, with local band The Bench That Rocked providing the musical entertainment.

Street Pastors, as well as door security staff and other groups, spoke about what it is they do for the public when they are out late at night. Door security staff from various premises discussed some of the issues they’re faced with this time of year, and the best ways to keep the customer safe regardless of their condition.

FIRST EVER ASHBY SANTA FUN RUN A HUGE SUCCESS

Sunday saw a brand new charity event and 600+ Santa’s take to the streets of Ashby de la Zouch as the Rotary Club of Ashby Castle staged their inaugural Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk in aid of Hospice Hope and other charities supported by Rotary.

A wet start to the day had threatened to put a dampner on the event as a dozen Rotarians from Ashby Castle fought against the elements to get the course set up and ready or the hoards of Santa’s arriving but the rain cleared up just in time as the first of the Santa’s arrived from 10:00.

Ready to greet the Santa’s as they arrived on the Bath Grounds was festive music and entertainment, the ‘real’ Rotary Santa and refreshments provided by Ashby Hastings Cricket Club.

The fun started at 10:45 as Maria Meadows from Fitness Republic got the 600+ Santa’s warmed up and ready for the run with a fun warm up as a sea of red danced around the Bath Grounds. This was just what was needed to get everybody in the mood for the fun run as the Santa’s set off on the 3km route at 11:00. The first of the runners arrived back within 12 minutes with the walkers arriving back comfortably before 12:00.

The event was very much set up to be a fun run or walk to be inclusive to all ages and abilities.

This was the first year that the Rotary Club had organised the event and were hoping for around 300 Santa’s to enter but were staggered as more and more people signed up in the run up to the event with a final figure of

625. Santa’s entered from right across the local area including Staffordshire and Derbyshire as well as a healthy number from Ashby and the rest of North West Leicestershire. The Santa’s ranged in age from 3 months up to their 70’s which helped to create a wonderful community atmosphere as all were welcome.

Dale Warren from Ashby Castle Rotary Club said “The day really couldn’t have gone any better for us. The rain stopped just in time and the support and warm comments that we have received show that people had a fantastic day. To have over 600 Santa’s entering in our first year showed the amazing support we’ve had from the local communities and has helped us to raise thousands of pounds for our supported charities. I must also again pass on our thanks to all of the local businesses, organisations and people who supported us either financially or by providing services and marshaling on the day including Ashby Town Council who have wholeheartedly supported us in bringing a new community event to the town.”

ROLLERCOASTER CHALLENGE IS NOT A BRIDGE TOO FAR FOR YOUNG ENGINEERS

Two teams of students from Ibstock Community College used their engineering skills to build a working rollercoaster and a suspension bridge, using K’nex construction kits.

The students were chosen for the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) challenge because of their interest in STEMrelated careers.

The college was asked by the company to test the products and to feed back its findings to K’nex Education UK. Students built the structures from scratch, using the instruction

booklets provided, and learned about the physics involved in large scale engineering projects.

Vice principal Lee Sheldon, who oversaw the challenge, said: "This was a great opportunity for students to use their engineering skills in a hands-on context and to have some input into future design decisions by K'nex."

The students taking part were Aidan Ball, Connor Beeby, James Bakewell and Kyle Blythe, who worked on the suspension bridge, and Lawrence Standen, Oliver Trigg and Owen Goodson-Toon, who built the rollercoaster.

COALVILLE FINALLY GETS ITS CHRISTMAS TREE AT CLOCK TOWER Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt has been asking the council to re-install a Christmas tree at the Memorial Square after they decided several years ago to stop displaying one after it was vandalised.

A dark time of year

“To anticipate tomorrow it is best to remember what yesterday was like” said Deputy Chief Constable Roger Bannister as he launched Blueprint 2020, our local police service’s response to drastic cuts proposed by central government.

So what was ‘yesterday’ like? In the last few months, hundreds of people have lost their lives in Paris and in Mali. A Russian plane taking holiday makers home from Sharm el-Sheikh was blown out of the sky. In cyber-space, hackers stole information from Talk Talk, exposing customers to online fraud. Last April, drug-dealers were convicted of preying on young people in Coalville.

Criminals are like the flu virus.

Every year they find a new way to get inside our lives and take what they want, careless of ordinary people’s suffering. Thanks to George Osborne’s ‘austerity’ the Leicestershire Police were, before the Autumn Statement, preparing for a cut of approximately a third of their budget.

Police claim that ‘crime is low’ and that it is 26% lower than it was five years ago. I would challenge that statement. Criminals no longer need to break into your house to steal your money. They can break into your computer or charm you on the phone into giving up your passwords. They can empty your bank account without the bother of tooling up. They can enter your home and corrupt your children.

The only mask they need is a false online identity.

The Leicestershire Police Force has always evolved to meet changing demand. A Mental Health Triage car (pictured) now diverts people troubled by acute mental illness to proper care by health workers.

Community Support Officers, once a new idea, now patrol our area dealing with minor incidents and providing a reassuring presence.

There is a growing need to tackle the threat of terrorism, online fraud and child sexual

exploitation. The Police intend to increase their online presence making it easier for people to report a crime without having to queue up at a desk. Just as in Health, the Police should not be confused with the buildings they operate from but should be measured by their effect on people’s wellbeing.

The Police are looking at making ‘strategic alliances’ with neighbouring Forces to reduce back office costs. They are considering out-sourcing their call-handling service with the help of G4S. You may remember this as the company who let Britain down at the 2012 Olympics and had to be bailed out by the Armed Forces? Outsourcing ‘core business’ is usually a recipe for disaster. I have serious concerns that this money-saving idea will simply channel more of your taxes into a bloated private sector feeding off the public purse.

The sad reality is a budget freeze and new pressures on policing mean we will still have to reduce our expectations. With reduced resources, where no-one has been hurt or there is ‘no evidence’ to help them solve a crime, Blueprint 2020 tells us the Force will have to ‘police in a different way’.

In an ideal world, policing is performed with the consent of the public and ‘without fear or favour’. Those of us who remember Hillsborough and the Miner’s Strike know that ideal can crumble under adverse political and media pressure.

The success of Blueprint 2020 depends on ordinary people supporting the police, volunteering time and information to assist them. We cannot afford to let them fail. If crime continues to go unreported and unresolved, people will continue to lose faith in the public sector. The welloff 1% can afford to buy private security. The rest of us should not be expected to police ourselves.

The attacks in Paris on 13 November were the worst act of violence in France since the Second World War. The victims were innocent people spending time with friends and family, doing no one any harm. Our solidarity with the people of France in the last few days has been absolute and it showed our Country at its best.

Our solidarity now needs to extend into countering the threat of ISIS. I have commented on this widely in the media in recent days and to give some background to this, in 2013 a vote was called in the House of Commons to allow Military action in Syria. The target was the regime of Bashar al-Assad and the action proposed was to assist rebel forces. I listened carefully to the arguments put by the Government at the time, and whilst there is no doubt that the al-Assad regime is despicable, I reflected on the experiences of Iraq and other Countries where regime change had been achieved through intervention, and the subsequent issues that have transpired following this. Further to this, I led the rebellion that voted the proposal down.

Whilst al-Assad was not a direct threat to this Country, ISIS without a doubt are. What happened in Paris could as easily have happened in the London, Birmingham, Leicester or indeed anywhere in the UK. We know that our Security Services have thwarted 7 recent terrorism attempts. I supported strikes against ISIS targets in Iraq so the current position of not striking the targets in Syria is plainly illogical.

On this basis, and given the strikes will be against targets that represent a threat to our national security, I will be giving my full backing to strikes in Syria if and when there is a vote in the House of Commons.

I have received a number of correspondence in recent days

about our security position in the UK and I know it is a matter of great concern so I will outline the actions currently being undertaken by the Government.

New funding will be invested in intelligence agencies to provide for an additional 1,900 officers, an increase of 15 per cent, at MI5, MI6 and GCHQ. There will also be a step change in the Government’s approach to aviation security following the Sinai disaster, with the Prime Minister ordering a review of security at airports around the world.

There is also a lot of concern about the security of our borders, particularly with the freedom of movement within the EU. To clarify this point, because the UK opted out of the Schengen Agreement, which was established in 1995 by the EU to abolish passport controls between borders, we have been able to refuse entry to almost 6,000 EU nationals. Further to that since 2010, we have denied entry to nearly 95,000 and one of the principal reasons we prevent people coming into our country – EU nationals and non-EU nationals – is national security.

We must however remain vigilant in the face of this threat and the Government is committed to maintaining our national security in the face of this threat.

Finally I do just want to touch on the horrific events in Ibstock and the tragic loss of Kayleigh Haywood. I write this after attending the vigil for Kayleigh in Measham, and words cannot express the heartbreak and devastation Kayleigh’s family and friends are facing right now. We have a strong sense of community here in North West Leicestershire and that has been evident over the last few days. I want to pay tribute to the work carried out by the Police and the volunteers in Ibstock who assisted in the search, and I’m sure all our prayers will be with Kayleigh’s family and friends at this tragic time.

Dickens Puts a New Twist on English Lessons A research project on Charles Dickens inspired students at Ibstock Community College to come up with some imaginative responses, which included baking their findings!

The Year 8 students were asked to conduct research into Dickens’ life and to present it in a creative way.

The impressive results included Dickens-inspired cakes, collages and even scrolls. Some students did choose more conventional methods, by writing summaries of their findings or creating Powerpoint presentations

IT’S FESTIVAL FOOD WEEK! It was festival food week for Year 9 food technology students at Ibstock Community College, who cooked up everything from tacos and pasties to risotto and Battenburg cake!

Students were asked to prepare a dish which could be served at a festival of their choice. Everyone in the class opted for a different dish.

Most chose hot food but others baked cakes. Recipes included

CHILDREN IN NEED TOTAL TOPS £950 AT IBSTOCK COLLEGE English teacher Marianne Clements, who set the task, said: “There have been so many different approaches to the research – it has been brilliant.

“By using a more visual method, it helps students to remember the details of Dickens’ life. For instance, one student iced her cupcakes with images from the author’s life, including a scene of his father in prison. Her classmates will definitely remember that!” burritos, bean burgers and Mediterranean chicken wings.

Linda Higginson, head of design technology, said "All the students were given the same brief but came up with their own individual interpretations. Every single student cooked something different so it was a busy session but a very productive one. By Year 9, we expect students to draw on the knowledge and skills they have learned throughout their food technology lessons to plan and prepare a range of dishes."

TOTS TUCK INTO SOUP-ER HEALTHY TREATS Children at Ibstock Day Nursery have been tucking into homemade soup and fruit salad, as part of their focus on healthy eating. The pre-school youngsters, aged three and four, visited a local shop to choose the ingredients before helping to prepare the soup and fruit salad.

Ibstock Day Nursery is a member of the Leicestershire Healthy Tots programme which encourages healthy lifestyles.

Amy Roe, nursery manager, said “We are totally committed to promoting healthy lifestyles for all our children. The children really loved choosing the fruit and vegetables for the recipes and had

Fun and fundraising helped staff and students at Ibstock Community College to raise more than £950 for Children in Need. Most of the money raised came from charity stalls which were organised and run by students in the college sports hall during an extended lunch break.

Students sold homemade cakes, ran games and quizzes and even painted nails to boost the charity total. Students also donated £1 each to leave their uniforms at home and come to college in their own clothes.

Student Josh Oldknow boosted the final sum by holding a sponsored silence.

The latest total had topped £960, with some final donations still coming in.

College coordinator Louise Reeve said “We are absolutely delighted to have raised so much money for Children in Need. The students showed real initiative and commitment by organising and running some fantastic stalls. Everyone enjoyed the chance to get involved – and especially tucking into the delicious cakes!”

Ibstock Day Nursery will be showcasing more tasty treats at its Christmas fair on Saturday 5 December from 12 noon – 2.30pm. Father Christmas will be making an appearance.

There will also be festive stalls and refreshments.

Students responded to an appeal

by Operation Christmas Child which sends parcels to children in Africa.

The shoeboxes were filled with an assortment of gifts including stationery, toiletries, sweets, cuddly toys and picture books.

Some students even included Christmas cards and messages that they had written themselves.

Year 7 student Ellie Chiswell donated three filled boxes. She said “I bought pens and pencil cases and notepads and little children’s toys to put in the shoeboxes. It is such an easy way to help other people at Christmas.”

Teacher Richard Pilcher said "We fill shoeboxes every year, starting around October half term. We have a special assembly to launch the appeal. Projects like this give students a greater awareness of how people live in other countries and encourage them to think about the world beyond Ibstock.

Everybody who contributed to the shoebox appeal has helped to make a difference to a child in Africa this Christmas."

The appeal is run by Samaritan's Purse International.

UK’S LARGEST CHEESE FAIR RETURNS IN 2016 50 cheesemakers and over 250 cheeses on show at Artisan Cheese Fair 2016. 30 April to 1 May 2016 at Melton Mowbray Cattle Market, Leicestershire.

The UK’s largest cheese fair will return for its sixth year in 2016 when the Artisan Cheese Fair takes place in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire from 30th April to 1st May. Last year, over 8,000 cheeselovers visited the Cheese Fair and with over 50 cheesemakers showcasing in excess of 250 different products at this year’s event, visitors will have the opportunity to taste and buy some of the UK’s rarest and most popular artisan cheeses.

The Artisan Cheese Fair will be held from 10am to 4pm from 30th April to 1st May 2016 at the Cattle Market, Scalford Road.

Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire LE13 1JY. Entry to the Fair is just £3 per person.

Visitors can learn about cheese in the daily programme of talks, demonstrations and tastings given by industry experts, as well as enjoying other local produce including pies, wine, cakes, cider, champagne and Melton Mowbray’s famous Pork Pies.
