COALVILLE AIR CADETS SUPPORT TROOPS FOR 9TH YEAR RUNNING Air cadets from (1188) Coalville Sqn are supporting the troops abroad by sending them shoeboxes full of gifts for Christmas.

Air cadets from (1188) Coalville Sqn are joining with Leicestershire Police to send shoeboxes of gifts to all the soldiers serving with The Royal Anglian Regiment serving in Kenya.

The troops are normally based in Leicestershire but are in training to assist with the outbreak of Ebola in Africa. This continues a tradition started in the First World War, when troops in the trenches received a small brass box containing sweets and tobacco from the Government.

The cadets and their families have collected: - sweets, festive things and toiletries to send to the troops. They

have all been carefully packaged up into shoeboxes, making sure each one weighs less than 2 kg to take advantage the Royal Mail’s free postage to the troops. The cadets sent 22 shoeboxes in all, to troops serving in Kenya. Over the years the squadron has received letters of thanks and also been visited by grateful troops. Over the last 9 years the squadron has sent over 190 parcels to the troops serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and now Kenya.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF WAR MEMORIAL IN ELLISTOWN On Sunday 30th November 2014 at 11.00am the Parish Council chair, Cllr Paul Hyde, and Lady Gretton attended the opening of the War Memorial in Ellistown.

The War Memorial has been paid for with funding from Sence Valley Environment Improvement Fund. The plaque brings together for the first time the names of the Soldiers lost in WW1 and WW2.

The Parish Council want the War Memorial to be a feature of local pride and some seating will provide and area for rest and reflection. The Art Work has been designed to reflect the height of a First World War trench and is set within a poppy-shaped base. The County Council (Century of Stories) project will be working with local residents to research their connection to World War 1 at a series of History Cafes next year.

THE HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS TREES

he evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals (pagan and Christian) for thousands of years. Pagans used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it made them think of the spring to come. The Romans used fir trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God. Early Christmas Trees, across many parts of Northern Europe, were cherry or hawthorn plants (or a branch of the plant) that were put into pots and brought inside, so they would hopefully flower at Christmas time. If you couldn’t afford a real plant, people made pyramids of woods and they were decorated to look like a tree with paper, apples and candles. Sometimes they were carried around from house to house, rather than being displayed in a home.

Teresa’s Turkey & Apricot Pie INGREDIENTS

500g puff pastry 2 tbsp oil 1 large onion, chopped finely 225g mushrooms sliced 1 tbsp fresh lemon thyme, chopped finely 85g butter 85g plain flour 425ml turkey stock Salt & freshly ground black pepper 675g cooked turkey, shredded 170g dried apricots, sliced Beaten egg

METHOD

Preheat the oven 200c/400f/gas mark 6 On a floured board, roll the pastry so that it is about 3in/7 ½ cm larger than a 4pt/2.2 litre oval or round pie dish.

Making sure you reserve some pastry for the lid. Cut off a band of pastry about 1in/22.5 cm wide. Wet the lip to the dish and press the band on to it. Cut out some leaves for decoration from the pastry trimmings. Put on to a baking sheet, cover and refrigerate.

Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based pan, add the onion and sweat until soft but not coloured. Add the mushrooms and cook until soft and any water has been driven off. Add the thyme and set aside.

In a separate pan, melt the butter, add the flour and stir over the heat for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and add the milk, a little at a time, stirring well. Return to the heat and bring

The first documented use of a tree for Christmas and New Year celebrations, is in the town square of Riga, the capital of Latvia, in the year 1510. In 1584, the historian Balthasar Russow wrote about a tradition, in Riga, of a decorated fir tree in the market square where the young men “went with a flock of maidens and women, first sang and danced there and then set the tree aflame”. There’s also a record of a small tree in Breman, Germany from 1570. It is described as a tree decorated with “apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers”. It was displayed in a ‘guildhouse’ (the meeting place for a society of business men in the city).

In Germany, the first Christmas Trees were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold covered apples. Then glass makers made special small ornaments similar to some of the decorations used today. In 1605 an unknown German wrote: “At Christmas

Note: To plan ahead, make sure that the sauce is completely cold before adding the other ingredients, allow to cool completely before assembling.

Then keep in the refrigerator until ready to bake – up to 12 hours.

The first Christmas Trees came to Britain sometime in the 1800s. They became very popular in 1841, when Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s German husband) had a Christmas Tree set up in Windsor Castle. In 1848 a drawing of “The Queen’s Christmas tree at Windsor Castle” was published in the Illustrated London News, 1848. The drawing was republished in Godey’s Lady’s Book, Philadelphia in December 1850 (but they removed the Queen’s crown and Prince Albert’s moustache to make it look ‘American’!).

In Victorian times, the tree would have been decorated with candles to represent stars. In many parts of Europe, candles are still widely used to decorate Christmas trees. Tinsel

Miriam’s Mulled Wine INGREDIENTS

1 bottle red wine 60g/2oz Demerara sugar 1 cinnamon stick Grated nutmeg 1 orange, halved 1 dried bay leaf 60ml/2fl oz sloe or damson gin

METHOD

Put the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, bayleaf and the spices.

Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved.

Taste to see if you want the wine sweeter, and add more sugar to taste.

Off the heat, stir in the sloe or damson gin if you are using it. Strain into heatproof glasses and serve at once.

Many towns and villages have their own Christmas Trees. One of the most famous, is the tree in Trafalgar Square in London, which is given to the UK

by Norway every year as a ‘thank you’ present for the help the UK gave Norway in World War II. Artificial Christmas Trees really started becoming popular in the early 20th century. In the Edwardian period Christmas Trees made from coloured ostrich feathers were popular at ‘fashionable’ parties. Around 1900 there was even a short fashion for white trees - so if you thought coloured trees are a new invention they’re not!

Ryan’s Mince Pies INGREDIENTS

225g cold butter, diced 350g plain flour 100g golden caster sugar 280g mincemeat 1 small egg Icing sugar, to dust

METHOD

To make the pastry, rub 225g cold, diced butter into 350g plain flour, then mix in 100g golden caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Combine the pastry into a ball – don’t add liquid – and knead it briefly. The dough will be fairly firm, like shortbread dough.

Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6/fan 180C. Line 18 holes of two 12-hole patty tins, by pressing small walnutsized balls of pastry into each hole.

Spoon 280g mincemeat into the pies.

Take slightly smaller balls of pastry than before and pat them out between your hands to make round lids, big enough to cover the pies.

Top the pies with their lids, pressing the edges gently together to seal – you don’t need to seal them with milk or egg as they will stick on their own. Beat 1 small egg and brush the tops of the pies.

Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack. To serve, lightly dust with icing sugar.

ALLOTMENT LED BY ENRYCH This year has seen a lot of hard work at the allotment, led by Enrych PA Steve Smith and aided by a number of volunteers and clients. We can report that it is now gradually taking shape with a view to some serious growing next season!

ENRYCH 2015 CHATSWORTH TRIP Tuesday 14th April. Cost is £15.00 which includes a house and garden visit. Carers go free. Please make a note of this date. Some of you will remember the fabulous trip we had to this venue in 2011. This time we hope it will be even better as we raised enough money for a special disability coach which will collect from several points en route. Space is limited to 35 so please book early with the office.

ENRYCH BOAT TRIP We had a marvellous day out on the Soar in May when we hired the Peter Le Merchant vessel to take us from Loughborough to Normanton and back.

The attraction of Normanton was that we were able to enjoy lunch and drinks together! Around 25 folks enjoyed perfect weather together; many new friends made! We plan to repeat this trip in May 2015 - date to follow.

HARRIERS HAT-TRICK AT MARKFIELD XC Local running club Hermitage Harriers kicked off the cross country season in style on Sunday in Markfield. The Harriers scooped first place for the combined team with a total of 229 points, first place for the men’s team with 211 points and third place for the ladies team with 91 points.

For the ladies, Mia Weston was the first Harrier over the finish line in 16th place followed by teammates Joanne Matthews in 21st place and Zoe Sewter in 22nd. The ladies team have got their XC season off to a flying start. Club Captain Darren Wilson said “this is a fantastic result for our ladies team, who are going from strength to strength.

Last year the ladies were placing around 12th in the cross country, so to see such rapid progress is just fantastic!”

The Hermitage Harriers men’s team are the reigning XC champions, and it looks like another promising season for them. Tony Woodward was the first Harrier home in 4th place preceding Gavin McDermott in 12th place and

Jason Williams in 13th. A total of 23 men took on the muddy course in their silver vests, with half of them finishing inside the top 100.

The Harriers hat-trick is just one in a line of recent successes for the club and, with the XC season now underway and the Leicestershire Road Racing League fixtures just around the corner, it seems that the silver vest might be the one to watch!

The association committee had been working on the establishment of a plot for the use of people with disabilities as an extension of the role of the organisation in the community and found the ideal partner in Enrych, whose ethos is centered on providing opportunities for people irrespective of the kind of disability they may have.

This is for anyone with a disability and is open to any organization or charity that wants to provide opportunities for people with disabilities. MRC CHRISTMAS TOY APPEAL LAUNCHED! This week sees the launch of the MRC Christmas Toy Appeal for The Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville.

For more than 25 years the local charity has run a very successful appeal to support families in Coalville and surrounding areas by providing presents for children. The families referred to MRC Community Action are, for whatever reason, unable to provide presents for their children at Christmas-time.

Lesley Massey, Operations Manager said “This year things are even tighter, more

families have been referred to us which means there are even more children in our community who will go without this year” Lesley added “Last year we were able to give presents to more than 100 children and we would not be able to do this without the support of local schools, churches and families supporting us.

The main aim of our appeal is to make someone’s Christmas a little brighter but we need help to do this”.

Throughout November and December anyone can donate brand new books, games and toys to the appeal by dropping them into The Marlene Reid Centre. If you are able to support the appeal in any way your help would be appreciated.

HERMITAGE HARRIERS SCOOP THIRD PLACE IN UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER RELAYS Hermitage Harriers men’s team claimed third place in the University of Leicester Relays on Saturday. The event saw a record number of teams entering - both from local clubs and athletic University teams around the country.

WHAT IS THE MRC TOY APPEAL? Each year this local charity relies on the generosity of local churches, schools & families who donate cash and brand new toys which are then given to children in and around North West Leicestershire.

Tony Woodward, James Willoughby, Pete Armstrong and Matt Adcock fought off some strong competition to claim 3rd place over the 3k course and clocked up a combined team time of just 39 minutes and 30 seconds.

Team University of Leicester secured second place behind an outstanding performance from relay winners Warwick University.

Hermitage Harriers also entered three mixed teams into the event and, although they did not place in the top three, the event was very much enjoyed by all. Harrier Katie Smith said: “the relays were great fun. We were in good company today with some very talented young athletes - the racing was immensely quick paced!”

Nail reconstruction is a method of creating a false toenail, usually for cosmetic reasons, where the nail is diseased or has been damaged.

For some people self esteem can be greatly reduced by what is perceived to be an abnormal appearance of the nails. This can lead to reluctance to wear sandals in the summer or to appear barefoot, restricting some sports or social activities. A new nail or set of nails can enhance the appearance and increase self confidence.

After preparation of the remaining nail, acrylic gel or polymer resin is applied in stages and cured (hardened) using an ultra violet light.

The nail can be re-built if there is some remaining nail to anchor the new nail to, and can last up to ten or even twelve weeks depending on client needs and rate of nail growth.

If the natural nail has been totally removed it is still possible to create a prosthetic nail but this will only last for a short time, maybe over a weekend due to an absence of nail to anchor it to. However, a prosthetic

nail for special occasions such as a wedding can enable the wearing of sandals or open toe shoes and can make a special day extra special!

Fungal nail infection can still be treated if an acrylic nail has been created. A small area around the cuticle can be left free of gel, and treatment applied to the area as normal while the diseased nail grows out. Other acrylic gel products have a base layer containing silver and claim to treat fungal nail.

The final result usually feels completely natural as well as being cosmetically pleasing to the eye, and nail varnish can be applied and removed as with natural nails.

“ALL THAT SQUINTING IS BAD FOR YOUR VISION,” You’re probably familiar with these words of wisdom: “Don’t sit too close to the TV; it’s bad for your eyes,” or “All that squinting is bad for your vision,” and even “If you cross your eyes, they’ll stay that way!” You might not be too surprised to learn these motherly statements aren’t completely true—read below for some more common eye health myths.

• Squinting– bad for vision – Squinting won’t hurt your eyes; it actually enhances your focus as your pupil gets smaller with the decreased amount of light. However, if you find yourself squinting frequently, it might be a sign that you need glasses or contacts to correct a refractive error (such as near-sightedness or far-sightedness).

• Sitting too close to the TV – There’s no evidence that sitting too close to the TV will damage the eyes; however, it may be a sign of nearsightedness.

• If you cross your eyes, they’ll stay that way – Contrary to the old saying, your eyes will not stay that way if you cross them. If you or your child can’t control an eye from crossing, schedule an examination with an optician.

• UV rays are only harmful in the summer sun – This is an important myth to bust! Radiation from the sun beams down regardless of the weather, and your eyes are exposed to UV rays 365 days a year. Keep your eyes protected with glasses that block UV. • I only need to visit my eye optician if something seems wrong – You should have a comprehensive eye examination every 2 years, even if your eyes feel fine and you think you can see clearly. Eye examinations help protect your vision and provide insight into overall health. Diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and multiple sclerosis can be discovered during an eye exam.

SHOWCASING CIVIL ENGINEERING HELPS STEPHENSON COLLEGE BUILD ON SKILLS SHOW SUCCESS Stephenson College’s exciting array of have-a-go activities truly captured the imagination of schoolchildren at The Skills Show 2014. The Coalville-based college – which also has a campus in Nottingham – welcomed hundreds of young visitors to its stands during the national three-day work-based skills event at The NEC in Birmingham.

GRACE DIEU REMEMBERS Children and staff gathered for a whole School Remembrance Service at Grace Dieu to mark the 100th Anniversary since the outbreak of WWI. School Chaplain, Father Denis led the prayers supported by Head Boy, Leo Parry, and Head Girl, Katie Hanford along with Carter Walker, Poppy Jelley, Rosie Lewis and Thomas Mansbridge from Year 8 on Tuesday morning at 11 am. Special thanks to Mr Reeves who played the traditional ‘Last Post’ on his bugle as the flag was

lowered to honour those who lost their lives fighting for the freedom we enjoy today.

The moving occasion was brought to an end by a reading of McCrae’s famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’.

Headmaster, Peter Fisher commented “It is a School tradition to gather together and collectively pray for and remember the brave men and women who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world. Our pupils are reminded of the sacrifices made by generations before them. We were all moved by the solemnity and spirit of this important occasion.”

Attracting more than 80,000 people, the show is a highlight of the education calendar, celebrating the contribution vocational skills make to the UK economy and the wealth of career opportunities they offer.

A particular favourite this year was Stephenson College’s civil engineering stand, where girls and boys as young as seven were invited to build a suspension bridge out of spaghetti and marshmallows.

This activity was devised by apprentices from civil engineering group BAM Nuttall, who in partnership with the college provides a bespoke apprenticeship programme to its trainee civil engineers across the UK. Civil engineering lecturer Matt Newman said “We’ve been very busy, with children as young as seven and eight wanting to have a go at

constructing a bridge or learn how to use a theodolite. It’s the first time we’ve featured civil engineering at the show and it’s proved to be a great introduction to a career in the industry.”

On the Motor Vehicle stand, the chance to align a race car’s wheels using a laser beam again proved to be a big attraction, with boys and girls of all ages trying it out.

Stephenson College Principal, Nigel Leigh, said he was particularly pleased that visitor numbers on the Saturday were up on previous years.

He added “By coming along to the show on Saturday, children are more likely to be with parents – and it’s parents who tend to make the decisions on what careers their sons and daughters should pursue. We’re delighted, as one of the colleges which make up the Premier Group of colleges, to continue to support the Skills Show. It gives our students opportunity to demonstrate their great range of vocational skills, and through volunteering, helps grow their confidence. By introducing disciplines such as civil engineering we’re also able to showcase our national apprenticeship partnerships with major UK employers like BAM Nuttall."

CASTLE ROCK HIGH SCHOOL YEAR 9 PERFORMING ARTS WORKSHOPS!

COLLEGE FALLS SILENT FOR REMEMBRANCE DAY Ibstock Community College and Ibstock Day Nursery fell silent at 11am on 11 November to mark Armistice Day. All 558 students at ICC gathered in the sports hall just before 11am for a remembrance service, led by members of the Student Council and Student Leaders. Students read commemorative poems and verses, including some they had written themselves, before observing two minutes’ silence.

They were joined at the service by staff and veterans.

Vice Principal Lee Sheldon said: “Students felt that it was important to gather the whole school together to

mark Remembrance Day on what is the centenary of the start of the First World War. It is the young people who can make sure these wars are never allowed to happen again.”

A small group of students assembled at Ibstock War Memorial at 11am for an Armistice Day service, which was attended by some members of the local community. The last post was played by Head of Music Andrea Allen.

Students later chatted to veterans and served them coffee and biscuits in the college staff room.

At the Day Nursery, children dressed in red, white and blue to commemorate the occasion and made their own sparkly poppies. Acting manager Joanne Sparrow said “We marked the two minutes’ silence and all the children were exemplary – there wasn’t even a whisper.”

As part of our anti- bullying week campaign, our year 9 performing arts students have had the fantastic opportunity to be a part of a project which aims to make Northwest Leicestershire safer. The project is a drama based project which raises awareness and gives young people the tools to recognise what a healthy and unhealthy relationship is and which also aims to educate their audiences about this topic. In addition to this, the project aims to prevent abuse in teenage relationships using drama based education.

This fantastic project involved 30 of our performing arts students whom have been be part of a National awareness campaign against domestic abuse.

The aim of the project was to improve young peoples’ lives by improving health and wellbeing through drama.

Our students explored a number of topics and issues such as: Domestic abuse, what an unhealthy and healthy relationship is; early warning signs

of an unhealthy relationship and exploration of the pressures which cause people to stay in an abusive relationship. The students learned where to get help, locally and nationally, whilst also being educated about what to do, and how to help people in these situations.

All students involved worked extremely hard and attended all of the workshops with maturity and enthusiasm, which impressed our visitors from Soft Touch ARTS, which is part of a national consortium, led by the London based charity ‘Tender’.

The students are going to travel around the area and perform to other young people in order to raise awareness and improve young peoples’ lives by improving health and wellbeing through their drama. Their work will help the local community by equipping them with the knowledge and skills so that they can help deal with these issues.

KING EDWARD V11 GRAMMAR SCHOOL REUNION Saturday October 18th 2014 saw the latest successful reunion of Staff and Scholars Of King Edward V11 Grammar School Coalville. They returned to Coalville from all over the UK to the site of the former school on Forest Road (now Newbridge High School) to reminisce and celebrate memories of school days.

Everyone crowded into the Hall to be welcomed by Mr. John Coulton, Chairman of the reunion committee and to view the vast collection of memorabilia , collected over the years, the lovely oak lectern, school cups, uniform (boy’s and girl’s) and satchels, school badges and many photographs going back to the 1920’s,all recalling memories and prompting conversation and much laughter.

Over 200 students came, from the 1930s onwards to the 1970s.Mr.M. Kirby was present and Miss Kath Bevan who was at school in the 1930s took the title of the oldest student with us on the day. Her vitality was amazing.

One brave student came wearing an old school tie! Professor Peter Odell (at school in the 40s) presented us with copies of his books “, An Energetic Life” (the story of his life so far) and his publication “ Why Carbon Fuels will dominate the 21st Century’s Global Energy Economy”.

making new friends. Some memories were understandably sad as we heard of friends who were no longer with us, or who were unable to travel due to illness or advancing age, but there was a great deal of laughter and delight at recalling days at the old school.

Most people were asking when the next reunion would be and urging us not to leave it so long until the next time, two to three years being the most popular suggestion.. We would like to develop a data base of email address and contact details so that we eliminate the huge costs of postage. This would all be confidential. PRINCE'S TRUST 12 WEEK PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Twelve unemployed young people started The Prince’s Trust Team programme at the Marlene Reid Centre, Belvoir Road, Coalville on Monday 22 September.

They have taken part in a challenging programme which began with team-building activities, including 3 nights at a residential activity centre, and included team-work on real projects in the local community (Ibstock Commmunity Allotments) as well as individual work placements.

Team aims to increase confidence, motivation and skills and as a result enable unemployed Team members to move into employment or education/ training. It provides nationally recognised qualifications and other certificates for the skills development achieved. It culminates in the Team presenting its achievements on Wednesday 10 December at 2.30 pm at The Palace, Ibstock where Team members will receive their certificates.

The Prince’s Trust Team programme is run and managed locally by partner organisations, referred to as Delivery Partners. In Leicester and Leicestershire it is Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service.

2,700 HOUSES APPROVED IN HUGGLESCOTE On the 2nd of December the Planning Committee of Northwest Leicestershire District Council gave outline planning permission to build 2,700 on land off Grange Road in Hugglescote. A development that also directly affects neighbouring Ellistown.

Whilst this development will go a long way to meeting the house building targets the District Council has to meet in the coming years it will present considerable challenges to local infrastructure and speeches were made to this effect by Parish Council, District Council and County Council representatives for the area (Councillors Jennings, Johnson, Hyde and Eynon respectively).

As with any development of this size developer contributions will be secured to mitigate the disruption and issues that the building causes, a multi million pound package has been earmarked to improve road junction and traffic flow around the area but concerns remain about the viability and deliverability of certain schemes, not least the so called ‘Punch Through’ from the development onto Bardon Road. Certainly coming on the heels of the consultation on

the possible re-design of Hugglescote Cross Roads there are numerous issues in the area for residents to be aware of.

Although permission has been given actual building is nowhere near imminent. The plan received only ‘outline’ permission which, in effect, gives agreement in principal but many of the details are still to be finalized and must be brought back to District Council at a later date. The plans also indicate that the rate of build will be around 200 houses a year rather than a concerted effort to build the total number in the fastest time possible. Whilst this may of comfort to some it is only when the homes become occupied that the developer contributions begin to come through leaving the possibility a lag in terms of the required infrastructure works taking place.

Residents are advised to keep themselves aware of developments through their Parish Council and elected representatives on Northwest Leicestershire District Council. Whilst the building on this site is now approved the details are far from confirmed and the issue would seem to be a long way from being resolved.

Joining in with the pre wedding excitement is Claire’s wonderful son Max who I’m sure will be helping with the planning! Congratulations once again and we will catch up with them in 2015.

I

first saw Claire across a crowded canteen at Burton College May 2010. Claire was working as a lecturer in Uniformed Services and I had gone in as a guest speaker with the Motor Vehicle department to tell students about my work within the motor racing industry. I saw Claire rush across the canteen to get a bottle of water she was dressed in tracksuit bottoms, a polo shirt, hair tied back and no make up but I thought she looked so vibrant and alive. I watched three of her students talking to her and I watched the way she interacted with them, it was that instant that I fell in love with her.

I asked the lecturer I was with about Claire and he introduced us, I instantly felt a connection. I couldn't get her out of my head so a month later I emailed her at work and asked if she would meet me for a drink. On our

first date Claire told me about her little boy Max who she adored and the passion for her job teaching. I told her about my love for motorracing, we chatted non stop for three hours.

thrilled Max had helped and that I had asked him if I could marry his Mommy. I had planned on proposing at Christmas but at that precise moment on that day it felt like the best time in the world ask her.

Fast forward to July 2013:

So why do we want to spend the rest of our lives together?

Claire and her gorgeous Son Max moved from Derbyshire to Leicestershire to live with me.

October 2013 proved to be a stressful month as Claire had suffered a few health complaints and after a particularly stressful day Claire grabbed hold of me, held me and cried on my shoulder telling me how thankful she was that I was there for her and Max and how much they both loved me. I told Claire I was going to get her a tissue but instead I returned with a tissue, Max and a ring box. I got down on one knee and asked Claire if she would marry me and allow me to always be there for her and Max. Needless to say she cried some more!!!! Max then told his Mom how him and I had chose the ring a few weeks ago. Claire was

MAKING YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS WREATH

C

hristmas is on the way so for me it’s time to gather foliage, cones & berries from my garden to decorate the house during the festive season. I have made thousands of Christmas decorations in my time, using foliage foraged from gardens or sourced from florists to create basic holly rings, traditional door wreaths, decorative mantle piece swags and bespoke church alter pieces.

They are lovely things to create and they’re cheap too if you use foliage from the garden or those of friends and family along with a few pounds worth of materials from the florist or craft shop. Christmas has official arrived in my home when my homemade wreath is hung at the front door. I urge you to have a go at making your own.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS FOR A TRADITIONAL DOOR WREATH The wreath base – Wreath rings made of metal wire are available in various sizes from florists and craft shops. I also create my own wire shapes & sizes for bespoke commissions.

Foliage- Evergreens are used as the primary foliage to cover the base and to give a traditional look. My favourites are Pine, Leylandii and Holly.

A deep green foliage base can be enhanced with accents of variegated foliage like Holly, Euonymous and Pittosporum. Stems of Rosemary, Viburnum and Sarcococca will add fragrance from their flowers or foliage.

The foliage pieces need to be about 20cm long to give sufficient length attach and to give a lush look.

Embellishments – traditionally clusters of cones are used to give a natural look which I love. Holly berries are a must if the birds have left any. I also use Rosehips, Rowan berries and Crabapples too. For a more country styles I use bundles of Dogwood or Willow stems to add a splash of colour and a naturalistic touch.

Tools and materials – Moss or hay can be used to add shape to the wreath base before the foliage. Florists wire on a reel will help to bind the foliage to the base and stub wire is used to attach the embellishments. These are available from craft stores. Pliers, scissors and a pair of good gardening gloves are needed to protect your hands. There’s been many a Christmas where I’ve spent the holidays with hands red raw from holly prickles!

HOW TO CONSTRUCT A DOOR WREATH Attach the loose end of the wire reel to the base ensuring it is secure and won’t unravel. Place a handful of hay or moss on the top of the base and wrap the wire around once or twice to secure. Work around the base trying to keep the edges smooth and limit stray tufts. Once complete tie off the wire end and give it a little trim with scissors if it is a bit shaggy.

To add embellishments like cones or accent foliage, wrap a piece of stub wire securely around the base and twist to create a stalk. Push the stalk through the base and secure at the back. Clusters look better than singles.

I was delighted to host Shadow Museum Minister Helen Goodman MP to Snibston last month.

Helen Goodman MP, Labour’s Shadow Museum Minister, toured Snibston with Brian Hallam and held a meeting the Friends of Snibston Chair Brian Vollar and Secretary Terry Williamson to discuss their campaign to save Snibston from Tory County Council cuts. Helen gave her support to the campaign to save Snibston.

The fight to save Snibston Discovery Museum is one of my top priorities and I’m delighted the Shadow Minister has joined up to see what a great attraction Snibston is and lend her support to the Friends of Snibston campaign.

Protecting our heritage is vitally important. Snibston also contributes £4m to the Coalville economy; we cannot afford to lose it. The Friends of Snibston campaign is going fantastically well, I’m proud to be part of the committee, and now to receive the support of the Museum Minister under the next Labour Government is great.

SHADOW DEFENCE SECRETARY JOINS WW1 TRIBUTES

In response to the Labour Parliamentary Candidates letter last week, I would firstly state that this Government has always been clear that it is committed to protecting the NHS and invest an extra £12.7 billion in the service. The Government has guaranteed that it will always provide treatment free, regardless of ability to pay and we will not privatise the NHS, pledging to increase the budget in real terms throughout the next Parliament.

You are correct in that I did support the reorganisation of the NHS and I made my reasons for doing so clear at the time. As you were not connected to North West Leicestershire at that time, I will again state my reasoning. During Labour’s term in office, productively in the NHS fell. Given the financial predicament Labour left the Coalition Government with a record budget deficit and the many challenges facing the NHS, it was clear the existing system which was not working effectively for both patients and the taxpayer, and it needed to change.

Because of our changes, the NHS has increased its productivity by 2.7% meaning taxpayers and patients are getting more for their money.

In reducing the bureaucracy in the NHS, the Government saved £5 billion in this Parliament. Due to this there are over 8,000 more doctors, 2,500 more nurses, 20,000 fewer NHS administrators and 850,000 more operations being delivered each year compared to 2010.

Regarding the use of private providers in the delivery of NHS services, this is not a new concept. The Government’s health reforms do not favour any

Vernon visited Ashby Museum’s World War One display and also released pigeons at a Fifty Trees for Fifty Soliders event.

100 years on from the First World War it’s important we all pay tribute to those who died serving our country. It was an honour to be joined by Shadow Defence Secretary Vernon Coaker as part of North West Leicestershire’s

tributes. The Fifty Trees for Fifty Soliders event in Hugglescote was a poignant commemoration to those brave young men who went off to fight from the village and it was great to join in the event.

BACKING SMALL BUSINESSES Saturday 6th December was Small Business Saturday and I called on local residents to celebrating the contribution of small firms in North West Leicestershire.

Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots campaign that encourages people to shop locally and support small businesses in the local community.

Originally the idea of a Small Business Saturday came from Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary and last year, its first year, was the biggest celebration of small businesses in the UK and gave a boost to local shops through extra trade of nearly £500m.

I would just add that you cannot have a strong NHS without a strong economy and throughout Labour’s period in opposition, your Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls has consistently made the wrong calls when it comes to borrowing, unemployment and public spending.

Had he been Chancellor the Country, we would be facing more borrowing, more debt and less funding for our NHS. This is the case in Labour run NHS Wales which has cut spending by 8% resulting in A&E targets that haven’t been met in five years and urgent cancer waiting list targets that have not been met for six years. be nominated by other young people, their school, parent/carer, or any other agency or individual.

t has been a busy month in Parliament as I invited the Prime Minister to congratulate North West Leicestershire District Council on getting the 70% of Council houses that were below the decent homes standards improved to the point where every home will meet the standard. In addition to this I have also launched my campaign to scrap air passenger duty for children. I know how tough it is for families to take a holiday abroad with the premium travel companies charge for term time holidays, so in conjunction with a coalition of travel organisations, I will be calling for the Chancellor to give a helping hand to families by excluding children from the tax to bring down the cost of a family holiday next year.

The District had further good news on the economic front this month with unemployment falling again to below 800, meaning it has fallen by a third in the last year alone. This is good news for the local economy which is one of the fastest growing in the Country, and more importantly the hundreds of people who now have the security of a monthly pay packet. In other good news, the average full-time pay gap between men and women is now at its narrowest since comparative records began in 1997, despite some claims to the contrary.

The importance of a strong economy cannot over underestimated. To finance the funding for things like Education, the NHS means that growth has to be generated by the private sector.

That sometimes means taking tough decisions for the long term benefit of the area. Take for instance the proposed Strategic Rail Freight Distribution Centre in the north of District. It would have been the easiest option politically for me to jump up and down and oppose this following a meeting I had with residents who obviously did not want this built near them. However I believe this development could secure the medium to long term economic future for this District with thousands of jobs,

ANDREW BRIDGEN MP ‘GIVES AN HOUR’ TO YOUNG PEOPLE IN COALVILLE North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen dropped in on Green Hill Youth Centre in Coalville following an invitation from the charity National Youth Agency to find out more about youth work in communities. NYA called on MPs to spend an hour with local youth workers in their constituency as part of the celebrations for Youth Work Week 2014 (3 – 9 November).

During the visit, Andrew Bridgen MP praised the valuable work happening with young people in the area. North West Leicestershire Youth Service offers support for young people aged between 11 -19 years (up to the age of 25 for young people with special needs).

Particular focus is on young people who are vulnerable or disadvantaged.

Qualified, experienced youth workers work with young people in one-to-one and group work settings on a range of issues affecting young people’s lives.

Andrew Bridgen MP said “During my visit to the Greenhill Youth Centre I saw

significant road improvements and extra funds for both the Council and local communities and businesses.

Residents have rightly registered concerns on issues such as air pollution and I have contacted the Planning Inspectorate and Developers to ensure these are taken into account, but unlike my political opponents I will not duck difficult decisions when it comes to schemes like these.

I would also say that having run my own business for over 20 years and having the weekly worry about generating the wages for over 200 staff, I understand the financial reality that there is no magic money tree and we have to earn our living as a country. When I hear of political opponents locally consistently opposing the financial reductions forced upon us by the wreckless spending of the previous Government, and then opposing private sector investment and jobs, I do wonder if any lessons have been learnt from the great recession.

I have raised a range of topics in Parliament over the last few weeks such as the excellent work Whitwick Community Enterprises are doing in increasing apprenticeship numbers, the deportation of foreign criminals, fire fighter pensions, the sentencing of dangerous drivers, seeking assurances that the widows of serviceman will continue to receive their pensions if they remarry, head injuries in sport and achieving parity of esteem in the NHS for mental health. As you can see I try to cover a wide range of issues in the house which are of concern to my constituents.

This month I will be hosting the Culture Secretary of State Sajid Javid to tour and talk through the future of Snibston.

I remain committed to the campaign to keep the facility open and I look forward to showing Sajid Javid what Coalville has to offer.

Fiona Blacke, NYA chief executive said “To understand the power and impact of youth work on the lives of young people you have to see it in action and talk to the workers and young people involved in it. Youth workers sometimes feel they don’t get the political support they need and this is a real chance to engage politicians on the front line.”

“From a Member of Parliament’s point of view understanding the youth work going on with their young people in their constituency is essential. By giving an hour in a local youth work setting an MP can demonstrate their support for young people at a time when being young isn’t that easy.“ Youth Work Week highlights the vital role youth work plays across the country, from sports and extra-curricular clubs like Brownies and Scouts, to mentoring young people with behavioural or health difficulties. But the NYA warns not everyone has access to these kinds of schemes; a situation that is likely to worsen as local authorities cut budgets.

350 LOCALS SIGN PETITION AGAINST MORE HOUSES IN LOCAL AREA Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt and local resident Tim Sporne delivered a 350 signed petition calling on the Council planners to object to the planning application for 250 additional houses off Broom Leys Road.

Local resident Tim Sporne said, “I have been working closely with Councillor Wyatt, campaigning against the plans for 250 additional houses off Broom Leys Road for sometime. This development will have a massive detrimental affect on the local area.

Over 500 additional vehicles could be added to our highway infrastructure which is already struggling at peak times. We cannot allow this application to be given the green light when there is already land available less than half a mile away in the Bardon Grange area, which as been put forward in the local plan for development.”

Cllr Michael Wyatt said “It’s important the Council stand firm when it comes to keeping to their pledge that this particular area is not up for development. All Parties have openly said it must be saved and kept part of the green wedge. If this application is allowed to happen then local communities separated by the green wedge will inevitably lose their own identity. I hope the Council planning officers will stand firm and object to this unwanted and unnecessary planning application.”

MANTLE LANE BRIDGE. IS THIS SAFE? Councillor Michael Wyatt said, “The bridge and the wall connected to the bridge is in a real state of disrepair.

Network rail and the Council need to see what action can be taken to address the problem of major cracks in the wall, which need urgent attention to make sure the wall is safe.

Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt has contacted Network Rail and the Council over the state of the Mantle Lane Bridge in Coalville, which is one of the main gateways into the Town.

BY LIB DEMS TO CLEAN UP MESS IN COALVILLE EAST

I have also asked to see if work can be taken to smarten up the area as many residents and visitors to our Town tell me that the bridge is looking an eye sore and impacts negatively on Coalville. I hope Network rail and the Council can come together and improve this area, which is desperately needed so they can show they are serious about improving our Town.”

The Christmas Wish

Flo was heading over to Christie cats house for a cup of tea and a chat just like she always did when Christie was busy baking. It was a cold and wet December day and Flo did not like the damp and wet at all.

Christie’s house was all warm and snuggly and Flo soon dried out and felt much better. Christie was busy mixing her Christmas cake so the house smelt beautiful.

“I hate it when it’s all damp and muddy outside Christie, when are we going to have snow? I like the snow, it’s all cold and crisp and it makes me feel happy.”

“I don’t know” said Christie, “it’s nearly Christmas and there’s no sign of any snow, some years we don’t get any at all”.

Flo didn’t look happy “I wish it would snow so we can go out and build a snowman” “Ah well if it’s a Christmas wish you’re after come here and give the cake mix a stir” said Christie, “Stir a cake!” replied Flo looking confused “and exactly how is that going to help?”

“Everyone knows that wishes that get stirred into a Christmas cake come true! Come here and try, all you have to do is to give the mixture a big stir whilst you close your eyes and make your wish”.

Flo decided that it was worth giving it a go, after all she had nothing to lose.

So Flo made her wish and then helped Christie pour the mixture into a tin and pop it in the oven. After that the friends sat and had a cup of tea together.

Ho, ho, ho!

Soon you will be visited by a gentleman in red.

He’ll arrive on Christmas Eve while you’re asleep in bed.

To the sound of distant sleigh bells he’ll be here.

If you’ve been good he won’t forget you, never fear.

Through the heaven’s whirling snowflakes he’ll arrive.

Then down upon your very rooftop silently he’ll dive.

As if by magic, down the chimney makes his entry.

His sack so stuffed with toys and goodies, there are plenty.

Come light of day on Christmas morn, his mission done.

Delivered all the presents, every single one.

That’s all finished now and he has done his very best.

Back to his arctic hideaway and a well-earned rest.

QUICK CRAFT Paper Snowmen

After they had finished their tea, the sun started to fade and Flo decided she had better go home before it got too dark.

“Thank you for the tea Christie, I hope I can come and try the cake when it’s baked?” said Flo “Of course Flo, I’m going to invite Daniel round too and we can enjoy it together” Christie opened the door to let her friend out when all of a sudden a single, lonely white snowflake danced through the air and landed on Flo’s beak.

“Did you see that Christie?” Then another flake danced round and landed on Christie’s ear.

“Yes Flo! It’s snowing!” and sure enough one by one, more tiny little pure white flakes danced through the sky and landed on the friends and around their feet.

HOW TO DO IT: Cut the snowman template out but make sure everyone’s finished reading the magazine first!

Cut a strip of paper or wrapping paper the height of the snowman.

Fold the strip in a concertina /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ making sure it is the width of the snowman.

Place the snowman on the paper (making sure the orange sides are where the folds in the paper are) and draw round it.

“See” said Christie, “Christmas wishes do come true!”

Cut round the snow man out making sure you DON’T cut the orange side sections that are straight.

And it seems like they do! The friends arranged to meet up the next morning with Daniel and build a snowman just like Flo had wished for.

Unfold your snowman carefully and find somewhere nice to display them.

In a mixing bowl cream the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg. Sift the flour and mixed spice into the bowl then combine with your hands, making a smooth dough. Wrap and put in the fridge to cool for 20 mins.

Pre-heat the oven 180°C. Roll out the dough and using festive cookie cutters cut out a lovely array of biscuits. Place on a lined baking tray. Use a smallish round cutter to cut out a hole in each biscuit. I used a straw to cut out a hole at the top for ribbon to be thread.
