Use Car Parks In North West Leicestershire?

Give NWLDC Your Feedback A parking survey that will inform how parking is provided in North West Leicestershire has gone live online today (Friday 29 July) at www.nwleics.gov.uk/parking.

Residents, businesses and visitors are asked to complete the survey at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ parkingsurvey to give North West Leicestershire District Council their opinions.

The deadline for completing the survey is Wednesday 31 August.

The survey asks for information about parking behaviour, frequently used car parks and ideas about parking charges.

Questions include: Which car park do you use most often?

What do you think about the availability of spaces?

What do you think about the payment options?

What do you think of the parking charges?

Feedback will be used to inform the council’s new car parking strategy, which will set out how it provides the service in the future.

Coalville Animal Sanctuary’s Thanks To Bardon Hill Quarry Photo’s taken by Kelly, volunteer at Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary would like to thank the employees of Bardon Hill Quarry, Coalville, most warmly for their help and support over the past year.

Bardon Hill based employee Amanda Hamilton and her quarry colleagues have been visiting staff and ‘residents’ of Redgate Animal Farm Sanctuary, Coalville, to donate much-needed aggregates, timber, pallets and giant tyres.

The aggregates help create paths and dry standing areas for the animals (especially the goats and pigs), and to fill in pot holes. The timber and pallets help repair our fences and farm buildings.

The logs and tyres create more areas of interest, such as climbing frames, for animals (and farmyard birds) to climb, explore and exercise. Bardon’s kind donations really make a huge difference to running the sanctuary; especially as this year has been so wet and windy and the infrastructure has taken a bit of a battering.

Our animal-loving friends from the quarry have also been fundraising for the Redgate animals. With the money raised, the sanctuary has been able to buy treats, toys, a snug and warm ‘goat coat’ for Nasher, and much more. In addition, John Neal, Bardon Hill’s Site Services Manager, ‘chipped in’ to donate a stack of tree trunks & logs which were felled on the Bardon Estate. Some of the logs have been made into a minimountain for the goats to climb on, and for the pigs to push about.

(Great exercise!). Some logs have been made into pieces of chunky rustic furniture now located in the new ‘Goose Meadow’ enclosure.

Hayley Matts, a carer at the sanctuary adds; “The sanctuary does not receive any funding.

The animals in residence rely upon, and are very grateful for, all donations, which help the sanctuary to continue to run. We are also very grateful for any help with fundraising and for people who turn out to support our events, most of which are held in the Coalville area”.

If you’d like to help the animals: The sanctuary welcomes donations of pallets to help create fencing in the animal pens, along with logs, concrete blocks, slabs and asphalt, for general improvement works. An Interactive And Informative Event For Older People And Their Carers Loving Later Life is a free information and activities day organised by Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland to help celebrate and kick-start Older People’s Month in September. The event is being held at Clarence House, Humberstone Gate, on Thursday 1st September from 10am until 3pm.

The event promises to be informative, exciting and creative with opportunities to learn about new physical activities, new skills such as Information Technology, art and crafts, music and even dance!

Older people attending the event will be able to find out about the wide range of support services and activities that are available to them locally including our own Information and Advice service.

Friends Of Charnwood Forest News Guided Tour Of The Ruins Of Bradgate House On Wednesday July 20th, one of the hottest days of the year, Roger West, a Bradgate Park volunteer historian led a group of 30 members of the FOCF on a guided tour of Bradgate House. Bradgate House was the childhood home of Lady Jane Grey, the famous “Queen for nine days”. He provided us with a thoughtful insight, suggesting that we should think of Bradgate House as a Grand Hunting Lodge.

The house was started in 1495 being built at the end of the Medieval Period and on the cusp of the Tudor. So this was a transitional era, castles were out, unfortified Manor Houses were the new fashion. Hence the return to the use of bricks; in this instance, made locally within the Park. Significantly there was no Grand Entrance (therefore not a Manor House), but Bradgate did adopt the new status symbol of tall chimneys that could be seen, hopefully, from miles around.

We enjoyed exploring the ruins and finding out about their original use. We viewed the leet, or channel, that was dug to bring water from the River Lin to the stockpool, and subsequently to overflow and power the water mill. We discovered that the Tiltyard is not capable of fulfilling its name being too short, so perhaps it was just a practice area.

There is so much see, both in the ruins and the Chapel (try to find the carved head of James 1). Also it would be remiss not to mention the shy herd of hefted fallow deer that only live within the confines of the House and grounds.

Successful Shop Front Scheme To Be Extended In Coalville Town An extended grant scheme to improve building frontages, highlighting historic features and reinvigorating the shopping experience on key Coalville streets has been approved by North West Leicestershire District Council.

Business owners on Belvoir Road and Marlborough Square will soon be able to apply for their share of £385,000 through an extension of North West Leicestershire District Council’s ‘frontage improvement grants’. Up to 90% funding will be available for work to improve the fronts of their premises.

The council allocated £225,000 to the original scheme, which was launched in February 2015 for businesses on Hotel Street and High Street. Out of 40 eligible businesses, 31 have either received a grant, applied or shown interest in the scheme.

The first frontage – Martin & Co on High Street - was completed in March 2016, with a row of shops on Hotel Street completed in July and work on Bitter and Twisted micro brewery underway.

The school holidays are here and so is the weather! The only outdoor pool in Leicestershire at Hood Park Leisure Centre is now open every day of the week for the school holidays.

The pool, run by North West Leicestershire District Council, is one of only a few remaining outdoor pools in the UK with people of all ages looking to the water to keep them cool in hot weather.

It’s not just swimming, there are also pool inflatable sessions where a host of inflatables are available for everyone to play with. There are raft and float sessions which sees people enjoying being on the water as well as in it. And of course there is the normal lane swimming and evening dips to be enjoyed by all.

Shepshed Toy Library Open Day On Wed 24th August

Mural’s Summer Makeover Nearly ten years after the completion of the Phoenix Green mural project in Coalville the two original artists have come back to give the much loved local landmark a well deserved makeover.

Kirsty Whitrow and Paul Barrand of Artists Anonymous spent a week repainting the Coalville footbridge to reinvigorate the local art piece and restore the original design created in 2007 with Mantle Arts and a team of young people from the town.

The bridge is also now a ‘Pokestop’ in the hugely popular game PokemonGo, meaning more and more young people and families are getting the chance to see the artwork on display and appreciate its intricacy. One young passerby commented he had never really looked at the

designs closely until he was led to the bridge playing the game and described it as “really cool work”.

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “A lot of time and effort went into designing and producing this mural and it is fantastic to see it come alive once again. The main reason we decided to restore this piece was due to it having gradually faded over the years and I am pleased to say it is once again bright, beautiful and bold. A lot of work was put into its design and creation almost ten years ago.

Local people love it as a landmark, and we want to keep those children’s ideas alive for everyone to enjoy today.”

Kirsty Whitrow, one of the original artists, said: “The designs the young people produced are pretty timeless so we didn’t want to change them just help make it look as good as it did in 2007.”

Ashby Award Proves That Visits Are An Education Ashby School has won a national award for its educational visits.

The Educational Visits Award was presented to the school at the 2016 Education Business Awards in London on Wednesday 13 July.

The award recognised the school’s ‘commitment to providing students with a range of subject specific educational visits in order to further their learning experience.’

Ashby School was chosen as the winner, following a week-long cultural trip to China during which students visited some of the country’s best known tourist destinations, including the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and Shanghai.

The journey also took students off the beaten track, giving them an insight into life in China, at a pearl farm, a Buddhist temple and

a middle school. They also got the chance to sample traditional delicacies such as grasshopper, scorpion and ox throat.

Head of humanities Lee Shepherd, who led the China trip and accepted the award, said: “Educational visits are all about enrichment, about exposing the students to cultures they would not otherwise have seen. School is not just about getting the grades; it is about getting the whole experience.”

Following the China trip, student Evie Jarvis said: “It was the best school trip I have ever been on, or will ever go on.”

In the last 12 months, Ashby School has also run educational visits to Strasbourg, Cologne.

Bruges, San Francisco, New York, Washington and a range of UK destinations.

Students from Ashby School are currently on a month-long trip to Borneo.

Ashby School was the only school in Leicestershire to be nominated at the awards ceremony.

The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust Three free lectures will mark this year’s SADS Awareness Week A local charity will hold three free lectures later this year to help promote understanding of sudden heart deaths.

The lectures, which have just been announced, will take place in Leicester and Loughborough during SADS Week (1-8 October 2016), a key awareness-raising week organised by local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), in conjunction with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

SADS stands for sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, a deadly and often hidden heart condition. Twelve young people aged 12-35 years old in Britain die each week from undiagnosed heart problems like SADS. On Wednesday 5 October, a lecture called ‘Marvellous Medicine’ will examine what skills it takes to save a life.

The lecture, at Leicester General Hospital, is open to the public and starts at 6pm.

It will explain what SADS is, and why speed matters when responding to someone who has collapsed in cardiac arrest.

It will demonstrate how publicaccess defibrillators can make a difference, and offer the audience the chance – if they wish – to acquire vital life-saving CPR skills, which take only two minutes to learn.

Dr Ffion Davies, medical advisor to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust and consultant in A&E at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL), is co-ordinating and will deliver the programme of lectures.

She said: “Each year, on the anniversary of Joe Humphries’ untimely death, we hold the annual SADS Awareness Week where we remind and educate healthcare professionals, sportsrelated professionals and parents and carers of young people about the dangers of undiagnosed heart conditions like SADS. “Year on year, we build on the awareness we raise of these undiagnosed heart conditions, so that Leicestershire is now at the forefront of CPR training.

“This year, we are delighted to be providing three talks to promote awareness. This first event, which

we’re holding in conjunction with Leicester’s hospitals, will show what UHL already does in terms of this condition, and provide an opportunity for people to learn CPR skills.”

On Thursday 6 October, Ffion will deliver a further lecture at Loughborough University, examining sudden cardiac death in sport.

The lecture, which starts at 6pm, will look at how SADS is relevant to sports activity and sports professionals, and will offer university staff, students and members of the public the chance to learn CPR skills.

And on Friday 7 October, there will be a talk for health professionals at Leicester Royal Infirmary, to increase their knowledge about SADS. The talk – called the Friday Forum – starts at 1pm and asks the question: what have we been missing when it comes to SADS awareness?

Speakers alongside Ffion will include Dr Doug Skehan and Dr Bill Toff from Leicestershire Resuscitation Training Programme, plus Drs Pradeep Vasudevan and Riyaz Somani from UHL. Martin Johnson, former England rugby captain and patron of the JHMT, said: “The work goes on to ensure as many people as is possible learn more about these deadly heart conditions, which can strike seemingly fit and healthy young people without any warning.

“That’s why it’s so important that sports club coaches – and anyone who works with young people undertaking physical activity – know the signs and symptoms to look out for.

“Training people so that they know what to do in a time frame of a vital few minutes could mean the difference between life and death.”

The ‘Marvellous Medicine’ and sudden cardiac death in sport lectures are free to attend and are open to all members of the public.

Produce From The Garden

Well all of the rain we’ve been having this year has certainly benefited the fruit and vegetables in my garden. The cold mornings have slowed the growth of the beans and potatoes but I now have brassicas, courgettes, salad leaves and radishes by the trug full.

Braising Fennel

Yes it takes some planning and time to grow your own but it is such a rewarding thing to do when you can harvest all sorts of edible delights from right outside the back door or from the allotment and turn them in to tasty dishes.

Salads

Strawberries

The thing I harvest most from the garden is lettuce and salad leaves.

I particularly favour soft butterhead and loose leaf lettuce which hold well in the garden and are slow to bolt. Rocket is something I sow infrequently and it soon shoots up to the skies to flower so it’s a brief but welcome crop to add to a salad bowl or sandwich.

My favourite way to eat salads is dressed with a simple French dressing of olive oil, cider vinegar, mustard and salt and pepper shaken in a glass bottle before pouring over the fresh leaves. I have a salad spinner so that I can rinse the leaves and dry them before dressing. It also helps to keep the lettuce fresh in the fridge.

Tomatoes

Most of my tomato crop is eaten fresh as I grow ‘Sungold’ – a cherry type that is perfect to eat straight from the plant. I also grow a beefsteak called ‘Cuor de Bue’ which lends itself to slicing for sandwiches and once I have a glut I roast them with a generous slosh of extra virgin olive oil, black pepper and herbs from the garden like Rosemary and Oregano. The resulting intensely flavoured fruit are great mixed through pasta, made into a soup or popped into the freezer for use in the winter in casseroles.

Fennel

Fennel is something which has grown on me over the years. As a child I found the intense aniseed flavour too strong for my palette, but I now love the herbal fresh flavour and eat the bulbs, herb and dried fennels seeds. The Florence fennel bulbs I grow are delicious sliced in to salads with orange but I particularly love the bulb segmented and braised in butter and vermouth to give a tender side dish to accompany meat and fish, or a sprinkle the top with bread crumbs and cheese for a main dish. Herb fennel is lovely with chicken so I always add some to the roasting pan to infuse the bird with aniseed notes.

Potatoes

Freshly dug waxy new potatoes are a joy to eat. I’m not a fan of potatoes normally but dug straight from the ground and boiled then and there they are delicious. A knob of butter is all they need, but when I want to jazz them up I’ll add a handful of parsley from the garden and a grating of lemon zest.

I raid my herb patch for chives, fennel herb and garlic chives which are great for potato salads with either a drizzle of olive oil or a dollop of mayonnaise.

Soft Fruit

From my fruit bed I can harvest a bounty of Strawberries, Gooseberries, Black currants and Rhubarb which make lovely desserts but I also make batches of jam to last me through the winter months. Strawberry and Gooseberry jam is a favourite of mine and nothing beats homemade Blackcurrant jam for the intensity of flavour.

Time To Cut Parking Charges Says Wyatt The Council are currently in the process of conducting a review of car parking fee's and usage within Coalville. Cllr Wyatt who has always opposed the parking fee's which were introduced under a Labour Administration as now called on the Council to scrap the fees or at least drastically reduce the fees to allow short term and long term users back into Coalville.

Cllr Wyatt said, "When the fee's were introduced we predicted that the car parking charge would have a massive detrimental affect on trade within Coalville. The cost of 50p for 1 hour cannot be justified and must be reduced or scrapped.

I only hope the Council finally

listen to the traders and shoppers who have abandoned our Town due to this tax on shoppers.

If the Conservative controlled Council are serious about helping to regenerate our Town then scrapping or reducing the tax would be a major step forward."

Wyatt Concerned Over Cut To Local Bus Service Liberal Democrat County Councillor has expressed is grave concern over the decision to reduce the 155 Bus Service which provide a vital service to a number of villages in the local area.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "I am extremely concerned that the reduced service will have a detrimental affect on local people's ability to travel to and from work, and general use of this public service facility. I will be contacting senior officers at the County Council to look again at this service cut, and make sure that the proposed cut, which will leave

It has now been a month since the EU Referendum result and we have witnessed an unprecedented period in politics. Since my last column we have seen a new Prime Minister appointed and several other big political changes. Boris Johnson has been brought in as Foreign Secretary and an Exiting the European Union Department has been formed headed by David Davis MP. These are appointments I am very much in agreement with and I welcome the words of Theresa May when she says “Brexit means Brexit and we are going to make a success of it.”

Whilst the Brexit vote has obviously raised uncertainty with an inevitable fall in sterling ( especially when the Bank of England announces that interest rates may be reduced) in its immediate aftermath, what has not happened are the dire warnings of some on the remain side that the economy would cave in. As I stated repeatedly ahead of the Referendum, the UK economy is fundamentally strong and we have many built in advantages such as the English language, our time zone ,the highest levels of recorded employment ever ,our links to the rest of the world through the Commonwealth and our soft power and influence as a Country with the 4th biggest defence budget in the world.

I mentioned a fall in Sterling and an up side of this is that it will significantly aid our exporters, something that is essential as we seek to rebalance the UK economy from being fuelled by domestic demand which is excessively funded by consumer credit, to a more outward looking economy which exports all over the world.

Another additional job that has been created through Brexit is Liam Fox’s Trade Secretary role where instead of an EU commissioner who no one in the UK elected or indeed had even heard of, who had to spend years trying to reach a compromise with 28 states in any trade deal; we will be able to simply do our own. We have already seen many Countries outside the EU approach the UK to strike a trade

deal most notably China, India and Brazil and I am confident that an Independent UK will strike a quicker and better trade deal with the USA than the European Union will, even despite the years of negotiations the EU has been embroiled in with the USA. We will also be free of the 12,000 laws and regulations which have gradually been imposed upon us by the EU. As the Chair of the Regulatory Reform Select Committee, I am looking forward to the opportunity of scrutinising these laws and working with the Government to remove unnecessary burdens from business which will make the UK a more dynamic economy in the years to come.

I would also add that I am proud that my party independently came up with an all-woman shortlist for our leader. As Theresa May said in Parliament when the Conservative Party are asked what we do for women; we keep making them Prime Minister. What a contrast to the present sorry state of the Labour Party, and I do believe it is both sad and bad for politics to have the main opposition party tearing themselves to pieces to the point where they are becoming little more than an extreme left wing pressure group. Another matter I feel both sorrow and anger about is the reported increase in hate crimes recently.

There is no place for hate crime in this Country and I am assured that the Police are taking these incidents very seriously indeed.

More locally, it is a pleasure to see the media coverage on the 25th Anniversary of the National Forest. Many will remember the landscape of this area a quarter of a century ago and the change has been remarkable. The National Forest have now achieved the milestone of 20% Forest cover and a 48% increase in the economic impact of tourism. The National Forest Company continue to have an ambitious agenda for the development of the Forest and that will continue to have a positive impact on the area and the quality of life for us all.

The Future Beckons “Brexit means Brexit” says Theresa May and our local MP Andrew Bridgen tells us that the Referendum has demonstrated that our country is not to be governed by “faceless bureaucrats”.

Meanwhile, here in Coalville, people have decisions to make.

County Highways currently spend £26 million pounds each year on looking after our roads, pavements and verges. Cuts to central government funding mean that by 2020 officers expect the budget to be around £16.5 million. Taking construction inflation into account, that is a cut of around 78% in the money available.

Would your household or business survive a cut of 78% in income without making some drastic changes? In deciding what to keep and what to throw away, Cabinet Members are being advised which Council services are ‘statutory’ and which are ‘discretionary’.

Highways do not have a statutory duty to cut grass verges. They are only required to maintain visibility splays. The Council does not have to provide Museums at all.

Cuts to local government funding mean that services in our towns and villages will no longer be provided by “faceless bureaucrats” at far-away Councils.

The stark reality is that many discretionary services will not be provided at all.

This is going to come as a shock to many local electors.

Older people, brought up in the middle of the 20th century, were socialised to a welfare state in which ‘The Council’ could be relied upon to get things done.

Streets were cleaned, museums opened, flower-beds bloomed and even housing was planned and developed so that working people could live comfortably and confidently in their own communities.

Coalville Needs You The new world is not a postBrexit phenomenon. Reducing the welfare state has been an aspiration for many for a long time. There is a belief that, if ‘The Council’ no longer provides for us, individuals will have the gumption to take responsibility for their local environment and community.

People will start sweeping the street outside their own houses again. Parish Councils will tend to public flower beds. Philanthropists will fund museums.

Meet Nicola Humphreys - a volunteer Real Nappy Advisor in Leicestershire.

Nicola says, “I started the nappy library to offer the support and advice that I struggled to find when I was expecting my baby about four years ago. I also think it’s important to help people to reduce their waste and save money.

“I hold monthly nappy meets, demonstrations and training to parents and professionals, as well as providing advice and information at events. My Facebook page - The Leicester Cloth Nappy Library - promotes events and activities as well as acting as a forum for advice.

I have no doubt that, in some places, people will respond positively to the cuts.

Hugglescote Parish Council has already taken over flower beds from Highways and very beautiful they are too. Other communities, including Coalville, are coming up against institutional barriers that make it more difficult for them to take up the challenge.

Without a Parish or Town Council, Coalville has no authority to gather socially responsible people to work together. Without a Town Council, Coalville cannot raise its own precept. It cannot employ Parish Wardens. It cannot claim and make use of developer contributions from the houses being built in the area. Without a Town Council, Coalville could find itself withering as neighbouring Towns and Parishes blossom.

If the aspirations that led people to “Vote Leave” are to mean anything to the people of Coalville then something has to change.
