Coalville most certainly ‘has talent’ to paraphrase a well-known TV show! Two hundred happy customers spent a truly magical evening at the Century Theatre, Snibston, being entertained by local stars: an amazing sixty dancers and singers of Expressions Dance and Theatre Arts Academy with ever-popular local cabaret and wedding singer Natalie Nightingale. Expressions dance and drama student Harry Thornley also entertained with beautiful renditions of well-known songs from musical theatre and Disney films. A sing-along finale with songs from the film ‘Frozen’ created a wall of sound from the audience who all seemed to know the words, whatever age!

The concert – for which all tickets had sold out a month beforehand - was organised by the stars themselves, supported by the dedicated volunteers of

the Century Theatre – and after spending time there myself, I can see why they love this atmospheric Snibston building so much.

A magnificent £1,000 was raised for Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary, Coalville, and the interval raffle raised approximately £240 for the Children’s Cystic Fibrosis Ward of Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The Chairman of Leicestershire County Council and his wife, Mr and Mrs David Snarrt, very kindly opened the much-anticipated concert and both enjoyed it enormously. Jane Betts, manager of heritage and culture at the County Council also came along to watch and to meet the entertainers and sanctuary staff.

Exhibition Will Showcase Student Talent

Plant Hunters' Fair At Donington Le Heath Manor House

Artwork by students from six different schools will go on display at an exhibition at Ibstock Community College in April.

The exhibition is a joint venture between the college and local primary schools to showcase the work of promising young artists whose talents may not have been recognised before. The artists were free to choose their own themes and techniques.

Teacher and exhibition coordinator Marianne Clements said “This is the first time we have held an exhibition of this kind and on this scale. We will be filling the hall with artwork which has been produced by our students as well as pupils from our feeder primary schools. The exhibition will be open to everyone so it would be wonderful if local people could join us to look at some of the fabulous pieces on display.”

The exhibition will be open on Friday 22 April from 3.30 – 6pm and Saturday 23 April from 10am to 12 noon. Everyone is welcome.

The primary schools involved are Dovebank, Measham, Ibstock Juniors, Snarestone and Woodstone. Ibstock Community College works closely with local primary schools in all subjects – including art - throughout the year, to help create a smooth transition from primary school to high school.

Could You Volunteer At Community Garden?

Volunteers are needed to lend a hand at Ibstock’s Community Garden in the run-up to Spring.

Volunteering weekends will be held on the second weekend of every month.

All members of the community are welcome to get involved.

Jobs will include pruning, tidying and general repairs ahead of the growing season.

Local people are also welcome to adopt one of the free gardening plots to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Donington Le Heath Manor have teamed up with Plant Hunters’ Fairs again to bring a spring treat for all plant lovers on Saturday 7th May with the entrance fee going to the Friends of the Manor who use all funds raised directly for the benefit of the Manor House and garden.

It’s a great place to find something different to get your gardening season off to a great start. The plants are lovingly grown by small specialist nurseries and these enthusiastic plants people are on hand to give honest, straightforward advice on choosing and growing the right plants for your garden. For true ‘plantaholics’ there are always those little treasures to discover that can’t be obtained elsewhere.

There will be a great line up including well known plantsman Bob Brown’s Cotswold Garden Flowers. World-renowned alpine and woodland specialist Edrom Nursery are coming all the way down from Berwickshire. We also welcome RHS Gold Medallists Packhorse Farm Nursery from Derbyshire with their great value

trees and shrubs with a particular focus on Acers. Shady Plants are travelling up from Gloucestershire with some surprising and unusual plants for those difficult shady spots and from Cheshire we have National Collection Holders of Helenium and Centaurea nursery Special Perennials, plus many more great nurseries.

So whether its alpines, trees, shrubs, bee-friendly perennials, plants for shade, climbers, herbs, spring bulbs, variegated and foliage plants you are sure to find something to fill those gaps and creating a blooming brilliant garden this year.

The Old Barn Tea Room will be open and serving home baked cakes, light lunches and a range of hot and cold drinks.

“Folk On The Green” Thringstone Community Centre is the venue for “Folk on the Green” Folk Club which meets on the second Thursday of the month, and is going from strength to strength.

We are fortunate to have recently welcomed a number of Folk artists who wrote and perform their own songs to a very high standard.

At our last get-together the Folk group ‘Calling Time’ shared a new song with us called ‘Coal and Clay’ which has been written as part of a project to celebrate the new long distance footpath The National Forest Way. A collection of local folk musicians including Roots Community Choir and the band Green Fortune are currently recording the album ‘Wayfarers All’ which will hopefully be on sale in time for Moira Canal Festival.

The Folk Club at the Community Centre is looking forward to hearing their renditions in the near future.

The next date of our popular Folk Club will be on Thursday 12th May 7.30pm for 8pm start.

We welcome all folk artists who either sing, say or play, and equally anyone who wishes to just listen and enjoy the ambiance.

We meet in the Bar Lounge which is situated on the ground floor of the Community Centre.

Entry is free.

The Plant Fair takes place on Saturday 7th May from 10am – 4pm. Entry to the plant fair and gardens is just £1.00 with the entrance fee going to the Friends of the Manor who use all funds raised directly for the benefit of the house and garden.

Grace Dieu Hosts Regional Maths Final

Thringstone Community Centre wishes to form a Singleton’s Group. The main thrust of this new initiative is to enable anyone who lives independently to meet and enjoy the company of others, and thereby have a fuller social life, and at the same time make new friends.

Grace Dieu Manor School hosted an regional team mathematics competition on the 21st March. Twenty Four teams competed in a regional heat to win a chance to compete at the national final in London on Monday 20th June 2016.

The national Team Maths Challenge is run by the UK Mathematics Trust and involves teams of four pupils aged between 11 and 14 competing in: • a group round using team work to answer ten questions between them; • a relay race – a combination of speed across the room and speed at solving maths problems; • a crossnumber (mathematical crossword) with two members of the team working on the across clues and two on the down clues; • a series of shuttles where teams compete against the clock to correctly answer a series of questions.

This event follows another recent celebration at the School in which Mathew, a Year 6 pupil at Grace Dieu, was awarded a Silver medal in the Invitation Bonus Round of the National Primary Mathematics Challenge. This is a phenomenal achievement and we are delighted that his talent has been recognised at national level. Mathew leaves Grace Dieu for King Edward’s School, Birmingham with an Academic Scholarship.

Singleton’s Group Launch

With this in mind the Centre is appealing for willing volunteers to assist in putting together a programme of activities and events. We intend to meet in our welcoming Bar Lounge, which is situated on the ground floor of the Community Centre. The ‘get-togethers’ will initially be on a monthly basis.

The Vic Bikers Pub Annual Charity Easter Egg Run

Marlborough Day Nursery’s Open Day Celebrations Marlborough Day Nursery’s open day celebrations held on Saturday 5th March were a great success. The Nursery’s Foundation Complex was officially opened

by Councillor John Bridges Chairman of the North West Leicestershire District Council.

Mr Bridges was very impressed with the provision on offer and praised the Nursery for offering outstanding childcare and gave recognition to the nursery staff for

the dedication they show to the children in their care. Prospective and present parents, staff, friends and families alike joined the nursery in celebrating 25 years of serving the community. Everybody enjoyed viewing the new Foundation Room, soft play room and sensory room. Queen Elsa, from Frozen, treated the children to singing, balloons and treats.

Lisa Mayes, Officer in Charge said “We are thrilled with the new Foundation Complex; the children are so excited to be using all the new facilities.”

Friends Of Thringstone And Thringstone Brownies Clean For The Queen Friends of Thringstone and Thringstone Brownies conducted a litter pick on 5 March as part of the Clean For The Queen Initiative. We collected 22 bags and attracted a lot of people to help with the clear up. Afterwards, Ruby's chip shop on The Green provided all children with free chips which were eaten in the community centre. Many thanks to all who came out, to Ruby's and Thringstone brownies.

It’s All Happening At The Marlene Reid Centre!

The centre supports the community in many different ways, most recently the annual Easter Egg Appeal with the support from the East Midlands bikers, enabled them to provide Easter eggs for many community groups, hospitals and the elderly. This appeal is very similar to the Toy Appeal which has run for more than 25 years which saw more than 60 bags of toys, books and games given out to families who, for whatever reason found it difficult to provide for their family over the Christmas period.

This year, Hugglescote Primary School helped by donating over £300 from their Christmas Jumper Day to support this fantastic appeal.

A big thank you goes out from everyone at The Marlene Reid Centre to all customers, friends, volunteers and staff for their support in enabling them to secure a £15,000 grant from the North West Leicestershire’s £20,000 for Seven Awards Scheme 2015.

What has Europe done for us?

In the dark days of the late 1980s Coalville survived with help from European grants set up to help struggling pit towns. RECHAR funded the mineral line at the Snibston Mine. Up until last year a former industrial engine shuttled passengers between the Museum and the town centre on high days and holidays, contributing to the local economy.

In 2014-15 the European Social Fund helped Confident Communities based in the Springboard Centre to set up a project to support people with low literacy levels said to be a “legacy of coalfield closures and low aspirations”.

A few miles south of Coalville £1.4 million pounds of European funding will launch a scheme aimed at boosting the rural economy across North Warwickshire, Hinckley and Bosworth.

Europe funds projects that help people living in disadvantaged communities, such as Coalville.

Apparently there is £152m available to North West Leicestershire from Europe.

According to the European Commission website, “To apply, [for funding] public and private organisations should contact the authorities in their country. The European Commission sets funding priorities but is not directly involved in selecting projects.”

I have looked at the County Council’s Strategy for Industrial Development in Coalville. So far, it seems to involve evicting existing business that provide established and reliable jobs so the Council can increase its rental income as well as demolishing industrial warehouses so this Council can save on business rates.

When advising the people of Coalville how to answer the “iceberg question” being put to them on the 23rd June, I will be advising them to vote to stay IN Europe. I also will be advising them to look a little closer at the UK authorities distributing the funds and ask who is actually benefiting from the cash.

Who Cares about Better Care?

People are living longer but that extra life is not always a healthy one. Keeping people ticking along who have increasingly complex, and often multiple, long term health conditions comes at a cost.

Over the next few months you are going to be consulted on ‘Better Care’ a plan that sets out how the

Leicestershire health and social care economy intends to respond to the £398m identified funding gap by 2018/19.

These changes aim to move the care of the frail, elderly and dying out of hospital. They are likely to lead to the reduction of 427 beds at Leicester Hospitals and a reduction from 3 to 2 acute hospitals. The Better Care team admit that “These changes will require a significant increase in capacity in primary care, social care and community care”.

Readmissions to hospital of people within 30 days of an emergency admission is a good marker for success. If people are only returning to hospital when absolutely necessary, we know the changes are moving in the right direction.

In 2012 there were nearly 10,000 readmissions to Leicester Hospitals. 21% were considered to have been “avoidable”, needing improved co-ordination between the acute hospital, primary care, community and social care services with “more explicit, agreed, accessible End-of-Life Care Plans.”

Nearly four years in the planning, is Care Better now? A repeat study of readmissions shows there were a staggering 5,000 readmissions in the first, admittedly worst, three months of 2015. The proportion of readmissions considered by clinicians to be “avoidable” is now three times higher at 67% and “specifically related to the lack of care planning for patients with long term conditions or needing end of life care.”

Mean while hospital managers are still discussing “the challenges of implementing a joint care plan which could be accessible to all relevant health care services, and could be updated accordingly.”

People are still being discharged from hospital with a terminal diagnosis, clearly in the last weeks of life, with no Advanced Care Plan. Their families are expected to cope until their GP has managed to pull together the social and nursing care their loved one desperately needs.

As readmissions rise and Leicester Hospitals reel from bed-crisis to bed-crisis, hospital managers are still asking themselves “ Who should help families plan home-based care for the frail, elderly and dying?”

The answer seems to be “Anyone but us.”

I recently voted against the Third Reading of the HS2 Bill so I was obviously disappointed when Leicestershire County Council dropped their opposition to HS2 recently as part of their rail strategy. I still believe it will have little benefit for own County and will diminish the city of Leicester.

Whilst I remain against the project and believe the money would be better spent linking regions together and creating extra capacity on existing lines. I do however have to accept that it looks like phase 1 is going to happen and there is a very real likelihood that phase 2 will also be voted through.

With that in mind, I have to look at how to mitigate the impact on my constituency and get the best out of the scheme. At present the line running through North West Leicestershire goes straight through Plastic Omnium, the biggest employer in Measham, through the Measham Wharf development, through the M42 and under East Midlands Airport.

To compensate or navigate through these obstacles will cost hundreds of millions of pounds before a single piece of track has been laid.

I am therefore lobbying HS2 Ltd and the HS2 Minister to change the intended route through North West Leicestershire to avoid this infrastructure. I recently invited the Minister Robert Goodwill to see for himself the impact these changes could offer. For instance if the route was moved to the other side of Measham, HS2 would avoid a factory relocation costing tens of millions of pounds and the loss of over 500 skilled jobs to the county, the chaos and cost of realigning the A42 and the scrapping of an exciting development in Measham which would provide a wharfside development and further restoration of the canal.

In addition to this, a further slight alignment of route would avoid a £500 million bill to tunnel under East Midlands Airport and the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange near Castle Donington.

All of this could save up to a billion pounds of public money.

Money that could go towards local rail infrastructure in Leicestershire and specifically my constituency when there is not one single railway station. The reopening of Ivanhoe line and a spur from the HS2 hub to Castle Donington

could be provided for a faction of these savings and I will be arguing this point with the Government.

On May 5th there will be an election in Leicester and Leicestershire for the Police and Crime Commissioner. This is an exceptionally important role as the holder of this office will set the policing priorities for the County and be responsible for a budget of nearly £171 million.

The current Conservative PCC Sir Clive Loader is stepping down from the post and will be able to look back at significant achievements during his time in office with falling crime rates achieved at a time of spending reductions.

Looking forward, the new PCC will have to deal with very different challenges to those faced in the past. Cyber-crime is a growing and important issue. Sir Clive Loader in his most recent budget highlighted his determination in confronting and tackling issues such as child sexual exploitation, cyber-crime, domestic abuse, and sexual offences.

Another important issue I have raised in the past is the number of mentally ill people who are taken into custody as a last resort.

This is not how we should be treating those who suffer with mental illness and due in a large part because of the efforts of the PCC, the recently implemented Mental Health Triage Car Service, the number of people with mental health problems taken into police custody has dropped by an astonishing 63 per cent in the space of two years.

Its actions such as this that highlight the importance of this role and the importance of your vote in this forthcoming election.
