Two Newfoundland Dogs Find New Homes After Makeover

By The Groom Room Two Newfoundland dogs - four year old Koda and three year old Rio have found new homes after a dramatic makeover.

The dogs came into Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicester branch of the RSPCA – along with a further Newfoundland, 8 year old Bethan, after their owner had fallen ill and could no longer take care of them.

All three were in a sorry state with long, matted coats which were causing them serious problems.

“The animals were really struggling to see, had problems with their ears and were visibly uncomfortable,” explained Kim Talbot, Animal Care Specialist at Woodside. “Their coats were so long and matted we couldn’t even carry out the neutering procedure. We knew the dogs would need professional grooming, but that it would be expensive for such large dogs.”

But a local grooming service – The Groom Room, based at Pets at Home, Fosse Park – came to the rescue, inviting the three for a much-needed pampering session.

Koda and Rio were the first to benefit from a thorough wash and trim.

“They looked amazing when they’d had their coats sorted out,” said Kim. “You could actually see what stunning dogs they are! And they just seemed so much happier.”

Koda and Rio were both were snapped up the following week and are now settling nicely into their new homes.

Bethan, who came into the centre wary of people and in need of a little more paw holding from Kim, had to wait for her pampering session. But she is now looking very fine, has been signed off by the vet and is ready for a special family to offer her a new forever home too.

“We’re so grateful to the Groom Room,” said Kim. “If they hadn’t stepped in, we wouldn’t have been able to get the same result for the dogs.”

“It costs nearly £20,000 per week to run the Centre and we are entirely reliant on donations and support from organisations like the Groom Room to be able to help dogs like Koda, Rio and Bethan.”

We’re delighted that Koda and Rio have found new homes and wish Bethan the same good luck.”

The North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) scheme aims to support independent town centre businesses, creating new local jobs as well as increasing spend, footfall and occupancy within North West Leicestershire town centres and Coalville Market.

Three levels of funding are available ranging from £500 up to larger £25,000 grants, with applications being accepted from Monday 8 May from businesses located in Ashby, Castle Donington, Coalville, Ibstock, Kegworth and Measham.

Through the ETC programme the council will target businesses who take up vacant properties, and those independent and niche businesses that make town centres special.

ETC grant funding will be made available at three levels: • £500 ‘Golden Hello’ grants for new businesses taking on an empty premise – No match funding required.

• £1k – £5k ETC ‘Small’ grants requires 50 per cent match funding and job creation.

• £5k – £25k ETC ‘Large’ grants requires 66 per cent match fund and job creation.

Village shops outside of the six main town centres will be able to apply for grant funding through the new Village Shop Grant scheme.

The grants will aim to improve the performance of Post Offices, village shops and other rural retail outlets selling essential fresh produce through enhancing existing services and introducing new ones.

• £1k – £3k Village Shop Grants – requires 50 per cent match funding and job creation.

Alongside the new ETC grant funding, the council will host a series of retail training workshops to develop customer service, sales, marketing and also to encourage more businesses to have an online presence.

These workshops will be open to all market traders, retail, café, restaurants and pubs from across the district and charity shops will also be welcome.

It was a Thursday afternoon and Ashley was called by his GP to come into see them ASAP as tests on a "sebaceous cyst" in his neck had showed something unexpected. I left work and headed to London - and so it began... Suspected CANCER. After initial tests and weeks of waiting, the original diagnosis was Sarcoma. However, the Dr's were still not 100% sure as to what type of disease it was. Biopsies, Bone Marrow Tests, Scans, you name it he had it. It was around 3 months of anxious waiting, googling every type of Sarcoma under the sun to then be told that his official diagnosis was something completely different - Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma NOS. Finally a diagnosis but not the one we wanted to hear. A Blood Cancer that is so rare and individual that there is currently not a standard treatment available - overall survival rates for this type of Lymphoma are around 20%.

After exhausting the Google database I came to the realisation that there is very little published information on T-Cell lymphomas and everything I did read wasn't very promising. This is why the work of Bloodwise and other charities such as Lymphoma Association are so important.

Ashley has to this date received 3 chemotherapy regimes (CHOP, ESHAP and IVE) all of which have failed to get him into the remission he needs for His Bone Marrow Transplant. He has spent a number of weeks in hospital with life threatening infections and I've had many sleepless nights and trains to be besides his hospital bed. He has also had intensive Radiotherapy and just when we thought we were getting somewhere, results from his scan showed that it had spread to his bones, liver and lymph nodes across his lymphatic system. It took 8 months to get Ashley a diagnosis and although the NHS has been fantastic, this shows that there needs to be more research into these cancers.

It has been the most difficult year of my life especially after losing my Grandma to cancer 3 years ago. I often think to myself why us? What have we done to deserve this? Ashley is not only my boyfriend but he is also my best friend, and faced with the possibility of losing him is heartbreaking. This should be the time of our lives where we live, and travel the world. We shouldn't be sitting in hospital rooms waiting on results to determine whether we will have the rest of our lives together.

Ashley is currently on a trial, which is funded by charities such as Bloodwise. We are faced by a real possibility that all treatment options will run out and it is so important that we can raise money to fund more trials like this in the hope of finding a cure - not just for Ashley but for everyone one else facing the same reality.

Ashley has always remained positive (even when his beloved hair fell out!) and has been there for me when I’ve not been as strong as he has. His family and friends have been amazing and a big support unit for him. I am now running my first half marathon around London to try and raise money to show my support to everyone in need of help and for those trying to help.

Royal Observer Corps (ROC) Bunker & WWII Aircraft Post

There is an open day on the 2, 3 & 4 June 2017, between 10.15am to 4.30pm, except lunchtime on the 3rd, in Stoke Golding, Leicestershire. Access is from Wykin Lane along the footpath to the left of the new cemetery and will be signposted on the day.

The Stoke Golding nuclear monitoring post, known as George 2, was a master post, opening in 1960 and closing in 1991 following the end of the Cold War. It is one of 19 secret bunkers across Leicestershire.

The Even Bigger Big Knit Continues Let’s Keep Knitting!

The re-launched Big Knit 2017 is now in full swing but Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is facing a huge challenge and need even more help to create as many little woolly hats as possible for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit before 17th July 2017 with an increased local target of 52,000 over that period!

So far we have received just 6,500.

Knitters in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are being called upon to create little hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from November 2017. For each behatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects.

Building on the partnership from the inaugural Ashby Santa Fun Run, Santander were delighted to increase their support to Ashby Castle Rotary Club and their chosen major charity Hospice Hope, for the 2016 Santa Fun Run. The inaugural event in 2015 inspired the Branch Manager of Santander’s Ashby branch, Andy Swales, to get fit and has since led to him taking up running and has lost 3 stones in weight. Keen to improve the relationship between Santander and the Rotary Club, Andy persuaded 4 members of his staff to take part in the 2016 event and to raise sponsorship in support of Hospice Hope. Through Santander’s charity program, Santander then matched the money raised by their branch staff which helped the team make a large sponsorship donation to help push the Rotary Clubs money raised from the 2016 Santa Fun Run to over £11000!

Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners Over the two-month period February to March the display, Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners, has received a considerable amount of footfall in addition to some very kind comments made in the Comments Book. The Display was opened

by Francis Ellingworth son of Commander Ellingworth OIC Beaumanor during 1941/45.

In addition, a number of family members of the “Y” Listeners attended the Display and has stated by the Chairman of the Local Studies Library Volunteers, “The families appear to have had a wonderful time exchanging experiences as passed down by their parents, who served at Beaumanor and they all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to meet other families. There was, as they say, a great “vibe”.

We have been asked what happens to the Display now?

Following discussions with Beaumanor staff it has been agreed that the Display will be moved to Beaumanor with a view to being displayed at a later date.

The LOROS Support Bus will be on site together with other organisations such as Age UK, Hospice Hope, etc who will be available to give advice, leaflets, etc. Our Carer Champion, Jayne Buxton will also be available to register Carers onto our system.

The Event is being run by the Patient Participation Group “PPG”.

The Museum was delighted to welcome nearly 300 pupils and their staff from Littleover School, Derby. They seemed to enjoy and learn much from the illustrated talks we gave, which neatly complemented their visit to Ashby castle.

Measham museum is 25 years old this year we will be Celebrating with an open day on Saturday 17th June 2017.

Will start at 1pm till 4pm £1 admission, children free with an adult included entry to the museum, there will be refreshments and cakes for sale, tombola, bric a brac stalls and more plus the Museum will be open.

We have just received from Vertigo, a supplier of museum exhibition material, a showcase which contains our collection of local traders' tokens. These date from the mid-17th century to Co-op tokens of the 1950s. The display has now been placed in the Zouche Gallery.

Lesley Hextall's photographic display in the Loudoun Gallery was deservedly well-received.

The next temporary exhibition in June and July is entitled 'The Past and Material Culture' – a glimpse into the past through local archaeology.

Our summer programme of evening town history walks begins on Wednesday June 7th. These are always very popular so it is advisable to book a place. Call in at the museum or telephone 01530 560090. Come and stroll round with our guides and learn more about Ashby's fascinating history.

Annual Moira Canal Festival Celebrates One Of The Oldest Waterway Networks In The Country Will host the National Trailboat Festival at Moira Furnace on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border over the weekend of 27-28 May 2017 The annual Moira Canal Festival will return for its 17th year over the weekend of 27-28 May 2017 at the historic, Grade II listed Moira Furnace on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border.

The 2017 Moira Canal Festival will take place on the restored length of the Ashby Canal, and will be hosting the Inland Waterways Association’s National Trailboat Festival for a real celebration of the small boats of Britain’s waterways.

The Canal Festival aims to raise awareness of, and money for, the restoration, extension and maintenance of the Ashby Canal. The Ashby Canal was completed in 1804 to serve the coalfield of South Derbyshire and North West Leicestershire. The Ashby Canal is now being restored from its current terminus at Snarestone to Moira, Leicestershire.

This major project will ultimately reconnect Measham, Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe and Moira to the national waterways network, and provide a green gateway to the Heart of the National Forest.

At this year’s Moira Canal Festival, there will be a boat parade and a wide range of family entertainment around the banks of the Ashby Canal including the Coldstream Foot Guards 1815 and its realistic living history village, and armoury and combat displays.

Visitors will also enjoy a spectacular performance and mystifying show from Van Buren, Member of the Magic Circle. There will be music, with an assortment of bands and singers over the weekend, Morris dancing on Saturday, an RAF Dakota flypast on Sunday, fun for the children, live steam train rides, a variety of stalls and demonstrations, classic cars, historic engines, boats, plus a bar and refreshments. Shreck the boat horse will lead the boat parade and there will also be a chance to enter a duck in the Duck Race along the Ashby Canal.

Tickets are priced at: adults £5, children (5-16) £2.50, with under 5s free.

Garden Screening

Bespoke Trellis

We’re finally seeing some sunshine and warmth after a long cold spring. My own garden is filling out nicely with lush foliage and plenty of colourful blooms.

My boundary fences have had a spruce up with a fresh coat of paint and the privet hedges are looking smart after on early trim. Increasingly often I’m being contacted by home owners who are overlooked by neighbours and would like more privacy. I find that new build homes are often overlooked from all sides and can have as many as 5 neighbouring properties having a clear view into the garden and through windows.

There are several options I recommend for screening in such circumstances. The style of the garden, level of maintenance required and the budget are all things I take into account when selecting the right option for a garden design plan.

Timber fencing and trellis: Typical low screening options which most of us have in the garden to surround our property.

Usually they will provide screening from 3-6ft high and can be topped with additional trellis to give another 12-18 inches of height.

‘Off the shelf’ fencing/trellis is a cheap option and is relatively straight forward to erect.

Pergolas: If adding height to the boundaries is not an option, then erecting a building such as a pergola can offer privacy within the garden itself. Clothed with climbers or with a suspended sail cloth, these will offer a secluded spot to sit and some shade from the summer sun.

Hedges: Various plants can be used for hedging and often this is the most cost effective way of screening along a boundary.

Shrubs such as Privet, Yew, Holly and Pyracantha will offer evergreen structure and privacy throughout the year. They will require trimming at least twice a year so they are not maintenance free. I avoid the use of Leylandii where possible as these can grow out of proportion and are unsightly when trimmed hard back.

Trees: For those who need to add a tall screen to the garden without impacting on the boundaries, trees are a good option. I’m often asked for evergreen trees to screen neighbouring windows, belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

but this poses a problem as many evergreen trees in the UK are either slow growing or will grow to be huge unmanageable specimens. I recommend well natured deciduous trees with a good branch structure such as Silver Birch instead.

Pleached Specimens: These are trees grown on a tall single stem with the heads trained flat on to bamboo frames to give a living screen. These are particularly useful positioned in front of fences with the framework above. Deciduous and evergreen options are available. Hornbeam, Crabapple and Photinia are popular choices. They will need regular trimming and training to keep them in good shape, so good access is required and they are an expensive option due to the time spent training the trees so not for everyone.

MC Kickboxing & Fitness UK MC kickboxing & fitness UK based in Measham is now 2 years old. The club started by Mark Cowl (3rd Dan) has swelled in popularity with local and surrounding villages and members growing from 6 to 50 over the two years. We have also increased from one class a week to 5 a week.

During this time the club have competed in several competitions and most recently in Worcester.

The club took 9 fighters to this competition with the support of parents and other members and returned with no less than 8 separate titles, ranging from 1st places to 3rd places. There were some fighters that bravely fought in the competition for the first time and brought victory home.

Last month the club graded its very own first black belts to 1st Dan, Benjamin Hughes and George Cowl. Club owner known as MC said "I am extremely proud to grade both Ben and George to Black belts, they are a credit to the club and show what we have achieved " Both George and Ben now join Adrian Pemberton and Warren Day as club instructors.

The club has a fantastic relationship with the local schools and they often display in the school with the students showing off their skills. It is a great way to encourage the youth to exercise and learn skills which ultimately raises their confidence, encourages respect/discipline and teaches them how to protect themselves.

The club currently based upstairs in Measham Youth club have been made very welcome by the MYC chair persons Martin Vaughan and Barrie Mcgill.

Ashby School Class Of '77 - 40 Years On Sixty four former students of Ashby School were reunited last weekend, 40 years after leaving. The former students of what was then Ashby Grammar School met for a weekend of nostalgia and celebrations.

Travelling from places as far afield as Scotland, Kent, Guernsey and France, they spent Friday evening reminiscing in Ashby’s pubs, before going on a tour of the school the following day.

The tour was led by Margaret Hawksworth, Director of Sixth Form.

The main event was held on Saturday evening at Willesley Golf Club, where the former students were treated to a live performance by fellow alumnus Sally Barker, star of BBC talent show, ‘The Voice’. In a nostalgic twist, Sally was supported by her very first band, Cold Feet, who last performed together at Ashby School in 1977.

Speaking after the event, organiser Rob Walker said: "We always felt that our school year had a special bond, but to be able to gather so many of us together after 40 years was fantastic, and a real testament to the friendships formed at Ashby School".

Latest News From Spring has sprung and at Woodside we knew the signs even before we started to notice the new leaves on the trees or the birds singing and getting ready to build their nests! You see we have a problem which seems to get earlier and more dramatic at this time of the year. Kittens! Okay so yes they are sweet... and cute... and lovely.....

But the thing is there are too many being born and not enough people wanting to adopt them.

The figures are quite astounding.

Did you know that an average cat can have 1-8 kittens per litter and 2-3 litters per year? During her productive life, one un-neutered female cat could have more than 100 kittens. Without neutering, a single pair of cats and their kittens could produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years!

The figures however mask the health risks to the sexually active cat population, whether homed or feral. This can include feline aids, leukaemia, cat-flu, infections from fight wounds which can cause serious issues for an untreated cat, not to mention the high mortality on the roads as they roam to find a mate.

So why are we finding this such a challenge at Woodside? We aren’t the only animal centre to have this difficulty but I can only describe the challenges it brings from our prospective. Early each spring numerous pregnant stray cats are handed to us and they have not been microchipped we have no way of knowing where they come from. We have space for approximately 70 cats in the cattery and have had to build up a network of fosterers who help at this point by taking these pregnant cats into their homes.

The mum is health checked and monitored during her pregnancy and our fosterers are able to assess the mum and encourage her to be more friendly towards humans – she may have been abandoned and therefore not trust us at this point. Pregnant and nursing cats need to be calm and certainly prefer being in a home as opposed to our more clinical, busy and noisy environment in the cattery. Of equal importance is that mum is able to have her kittens in safety and they grow up being used to household routines and noises and to being handled from a young age. After the vet has said they are ready to go to their forever homes, the feline family are returned to Woodside.

All of them are neutered to prevent further unwanted litters, they have been health checked and are fully – vaxed and have been treated for fleas and worms.

They are also microchipped. Mum will often be adopted with one of her kittens but generally people tend to choose the kittens first.

Woodside is hugely successful with rehoming kittens and that is fantastic. However, to put it into perspective, this leaves us battling to encourage visitors to take on the “older” cats. Unspayed females can produce their first litter after reaching sexual maturity at 4 months of age. It’s a myth that cats (and dogs for that matter) need to have a first litter.

And it’s often difficult for owners to find homes for kittens their female has. Cats make delightful pets (I know as we have 5 rescue adults) but as with all pets they need to be planned for. The fact that Woodside has so many adults looking for homes means that we have to ensure that our cats are all neutered prior to adoption.

So, what can you do to help?

County Council Elections The County Council elections are over. I am pleased and a little relieved to report that I held on to my seat, Forest and Measham, with a majority of 38. The reason it was so close is because support for UKIP collapsed, with most of that vote going to the Tories. At the same time, the Labour share of the vote compared to 2013 went up by 4.5% in this seat, against the general trend. So, thank you to everyone who came out and voted for me – you really did make a difference!

Average Speed Camera Trial Since the election, I have attended a consultation meeting between County Highways and Measham Parish Council about the location for the average speed camera trial which is due to start in September. Prior to the meeting and in response to feedback on the original proposal to locate the speed cameras on Ashby Road, I had suggested that Burton Road, Measham was a better location.

At the meeting, Highways officers tabled traffic speed data that showed an average 85th percentile speed on Burton Road of 45mph in the 30mph zone, further above the speed limit than any other location in Measham for which data was available. After a short discussion it was agreed that Burton Road should be the preferred location for the speed camera trial.

So when Jeremy Corbyn says “For the Many, not the Few,” he is setting out a vision of an economy that delivers benefits for all, not where the wealthy grow richer and everyone else is left to struggle on with zero-hours contracts, unaffordable housing, and cash-starved public services.

What future do you want? It’s your choice on June 8th.

I’m sure many of you were surprised by the announcement this week by Theresa May that she’s calling a General Election.

Having witnessed events in Parliament in recent months, I am not shocked by the decision.

The fact is that Labour, Liberal Democrat and Scottish Nationalist MP’s are determined to weaken our hand when negotiating our exit from the EU. In recent weeks, Labour have threatened to vote against the final agreement we reach with the European Union.

The Liberal Democrats have said they want to “grind” the business of government “to a standstill”.

The Scottish National Party say they will vote against the legislation that formally repeals Britain’s membership of the European Union. In addition to this, unelected members of the House of Lords have vowed to fight us every step of the way. All the other parties are doing is playing political games and causing uncertainty about the future.

An election and a mandate from the people will strengthen the Prime Minister’s negotiating hand in Europe. Division in Westminster, and the Government’s small majority, risks weakening a Government’s hand in its negotiations with the EU.

It is the only way to ensure we have strong leadership, certainty and stability. An election now will give the country stability and certainty for a full five years, not just up to the point at which we leave the European Union but beyond it too.

An election will also enable Theresa May to establish Britain as the strongest country in Europe, in economic growth and national security. This as we seek to make the long term decisions that will give everyone a chance to get on in life, by building enough affordable housing, increasing our record investment in the NHS and making sure there is a good school place for every child. I am also lobbying the Prime Minister that the White Elephant that is the HS2 scheme should be dropped from our Manifesto for Government.

So it is clear that the choice in this election is strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives – or weak and unstable coalition government, led by Jeremy Corbyn and propped up and dictated to by the Nicola Sturgeon and the Scottish Nationalists.

The fact is that every vote cast for Theresa May and the Conservatives will strengthen Britain’s hand in the Brexit

General Election I am proud and privileged to have been selected as the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for North West Leicestershire.

Labour’s campaign slogan is “For the Many, not the Few,” and at our local campaign launch in Moira, I set out why I believe this is important. The state of the economy is one of the key issues in any election, and this time we have the added uncertainties of the impact of Brexit.

Rising Crime One of the issues raised during the county elections was a perceived rise in crime. I had a long chat with a local police officer about how crime is being dealt with in the area, which I found reassuring. However, looking at the statistics, crime in Leicestershire is definitely on the increase, and violent crime has practically doubled since May 2015. Under Theresa May, 20,000 police officers have been cut since 2010 and it’s surely no coincidence that crime is up. Can the Tories still claim to be the Party of law and order? Not on this evidence.

Like many who voted to stay in the EU, I respect the decision to come out and the question now is what kind of Brexit can we negotiate with our EU partners. Labour wants a Brexit that is focused on jobs and the economy. Not one that results in more tax breaks for the rich,

It was therefore welcoming to see that Labour, if elected, is pledging an extra 10,000 police officers.

This is a significant commitment to tackle and also prevent crime, which will make residents feel more secure in their homes and neighbourhoods.
