Primary Schools up and down the country are using Fitter Future, an online series of fitness workouts, to ensure they are hitting targets outlined in the Government Obesity Strategy.

Fitter Future works with both KS1 and KS2 classes and is designed for use in the classroom or hall.

The programme allows teachers to quickly initiate brain breaks and active sessions throughout the day. Research shows that children who are subject to regular physical activity have the potential to perform better in the classroom. Ashby Civic Society Ashby Civic Society heard the fascinating history of Packington Shire horses at their January meeting and how Leicestershire has had a unique relationship with horses. Lois Edwards provided a wonderful collection of local photographs to illustrate her talk on this important development of local history. Several members told their personal equine stories and how horses impacted on their lives. A really interesting evening.

Come to our next meeting to hear of map making from Mappa Mundi to local county maps. An unusual subject, especially relevant now considering the changing map of Ashby.

Andrew Bridgen MP states: “I urge the local Primary Schools in North West Leicestershire to engage with Fitter Future who are offering all primary schools a free trial of the programme.

The programme is designed to give teachers the opportunity to try workouts and see how Fitter Future would benefit their classes.

I am informed that the benefits are that no equipment is needed, set up time is quick and all workouts include three tier differentiation to cater for all levels. Furthermore all children who attend user schools get free access to the programme from home where they can complete workouts and exclusive monthly challenges.”

Fitter Future is also a great use of the Sport Premium Funding.

All schools receive a Playground Pack which allows teachers to take workouts to the playground with a simple picture step by step guide to all the movements seen in the programme. Detailed data reports are also sent each month so schools can measure impact.

Changes To Groby Road And NW Leicestershire Services From 19th February 2017

Ashby Museum

Groby Road corridor (Leicester): Services are now every 10 minutes between the city centre and County Hall.

Service 26: Leicester-Groby-Coalville A revised timetable is being introduced to improve punctuality.

The route through Groby is revised to take in Stephenson Way and Woodbank Road. Parts of Ratby Road in Groby will no longer be served. Customers currently boarding by Ratby Allotments can use alternative stops at Lawnwood Shopping Parade.

Service 27: Leicester to Ratby We are changing the timetable in response to increased traffic congestion in Leicester. Due to low passenger numbers at certain times of day Whittington Drive will now only be served on off-peak journeys.

Service 28: Leicester to Groby This service is being incorporated into other services due to low passenger numbers. Some sections of route will no longer be served. Customers currently boarding in Glebe Road and Pymm Leys Lane can use alternative services from Woodbank Road (26), Laundon Way Shops (27), or Leicester Road (26, 29, 29A).

Service 9/9A: Coalville to Burton We are changing the timetable in response to increased traffic congestion in Leicester and Burton. Services are renumbered 29 (from 9) and 29A (from 9A) and will have the same number all the way through from Leicester to Burton to make it easier for customers to know which route their bus will take between Coalville and Burton.

Service 15: Coalville to lbstock We're revising the frequency of service 15 on Saturdays due to changing customer demand. The service will continue to operate but at a revised frequency of every 30 minutes.

Service 29/29A/29X: Leicester to Coalville 29X withdrawn and replaced additional journeys on service 29 and 29A. Services 29 and 29A will now operate up to every 20mins between Leicester and Coalville via Markfield Village Centre, Groby, Greenhill and Whitwick.

Two buses per hour will continue to Ashby, Swadlincote and Burton.

The times of buses serving the Amazon warehouse at Bardon are revised to better fit their shifts and additional journeys are introduced to meet all their shift times 7 days a week.

The Museum volunteers are already involved in the 2017 Season, having re-opened on Monday, 2nd of January. Yes, we are open throughout the year, including on every Bank Holiday, apart from a week either side of Christmas. We have two new volunteers and one returning - welcome again to Marjorie Hampson! We would be delighted to recruit more, of course - our door is always open to those who could spend a couple of hours once a fortnight to support one of the several cultural jewels in Ashby’s crown. We are looking forward, with great interest, to the development of Ashby’s “Cultural Quarter” based around the Library, Venture Theatre, Hood Park Leisure Centre and, of course, the Museum. We are also working with Pudding Bag Productions, Ashby Tourist Information Centre, St. Helen’s Church and the Town Council to develop a leaflet linked to the exciting Town Digital Trail, already available through smart phones etc.

Friends of Ashby Museum Our next afternoon talk at 2 p.m. on Wednesday 15th March, will be given by Ivan Hallam on local clock and watchmakers in days gone by, ‘Time in a Rural Town’. This will coincide with the exhibition in the Loudoun Gallery.

In May we have Martin Vaughan coming to do a talk on the wildlife photography that he does locally.

Historical Artefacts Discovered At Grace Dieu Members of the Loughborough Coin and Search Society conducted a

search within the grounds of Grace Dieu Manor School led by Grace Dieu parent, Mr Stephen Taylor and Researcher John Maloney. The School is

situated in a rich historical landscape on the edge of Charnwood Forest and North West Leicestershire. The group used traditional traverse and stint fieldwalking and metal detectors to scour the land.

Their search brought up numerous artefacts, old and new, including various coins, pottery from the 18th and 19th century, clay pipes,

buttons, badges and military relics such as musket /pistol balls from pre 1910 guns.

The highlight of all the finds was a silver coin of William III dating to

1700 which was probably a sixpence. This particular coin had been made into a 'Love Token'. There was a custom where a young man would give a smoothed bent coin, which had had the Monarch's head obliterated

and then bent twice to a potential sweetheart. If his sweetheart accepted the advances the young lady would keep the token - if not she disposed of the coin... The tradition is reflected in the old rhyme "There was

a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile, he found a crooked sixpence on a crooked style".

The artefacts will be on display at the School for the children to see in the new year and, although they are of no great worth, they all have a story behind them and bring a little bit of our local history alive.

Christmas Arrivals – Appropriately Housed In A Stable!

Some of the cats available from Redgate from about 10th January We are delighted to report that we have been very lucky with re-homing cats and kittens in the past quarter – some lovely local folk have been coming along to the Shaw Lane sanctuary to adopt a new friend (or rather, new family member). But of course, time moves on and we are now settling the next ‘cohort’ (as I believe the new buzz-word is) into quarantine.

Another 8 cats were picked up from around and about the area last weekend alone. And they are now finding their paws in the new cattery block and also ... in the old stables. Very appropriate for Christmas rescues! There will probably be about 15 cats for adoption by early/mid January.

Adopting a Redgate Cat If, after the Christmas celebrations have subsided and routine life has resumed, you think that YOU might be able to adopt a Redgate cat – and they really are unique!

– please do come along and visit us and meet them. There really is no obligation to make a decision

quickly. Our newer arrivals will be put up for re-homing from about 10th January after all their veterinary checks/treatments have been completed – and I’m sure you will agree there are some real beauties in the attached photos, of all colours and patterns: although like families everywhere, we love them all, regardless! We only ask that you visit the cat twice to make sure he or she is your perfect match, pay a reservation fee (leaving full contact details), and also give the staff notice of the date and time you will pick up your new cat.

ASHBY & DISTRICT STROKE SUPPORT GROUP

A Year Of Achievement, Heritage And Fun On The Bath Grounds The Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds’ Improved Accessibility and Heritage Project has improved awareness of the Grounds’ fascinating history and increased their use by the public and visitors to Ashby.

fieldwork sessions during three weeks in May, June and July, followed up by a results talk in September. Sessions were also held in local schools, enthusing children on the wonders of archaeology.

The project included construction of a new footpath and heritage trail around the Bath Grounds and a host of community heritage education activities – “Have a Go” archaeology; community mosaics; walks and talks; children’s education boxes; a new film and ballad and a revised book on the Ivanhoe Baths and Spa.

The Ashby Arts Festival weekend provided a focus for a wide range of community activities. Ashby’s Mayor, Mike Ball, then unveiled the new Ivanhoe Baths mosaic, followed by May Pole dancing.

The new path, connecting the South Street and Prior Park Road entrances of the Bath Grounds, was constructed during November 2015. The path has encouraged use of the Grounds throughout the year and has also opened up new vistas of the Bath Grounds and their surroundings.

Three of the Project’s proudest achievements were officially opened during Jim’s Tractor Run and Fun Day on July 31st: a beautiful new Fish Mosaic, created during a series of community workshops, commemorates the Castle’s medieval fishponds which were located nearby and the new footpath and Bath Grounds Heritage Trail were officially opened. The trail comprises five heritage interpretation boards, four numbered waymarkers and two mosaics, installed on a circular route around the Grounds.

Winter Scent With the grey skies and chilly winds we are experiencing at the moment, it can be tempting to shut off from the outside world and hunker down beside a roaring fire, but the garden doesn’t shut itself down completely in winter and it is possible to plant a few things which brighten up the drab days and even add some fragrance to the air to draw you outside.

Despite the fact that most of our pollinating insects don’t venture out on cold days, there are a few who brave the weather, and from that we can benefit. There are shrubs and bulbs which flower during the winter and in order to attract those brave insects they have to go all out the give off the signal that they are worthy of a visit. Scent is a great way of plants to advertise that they are in their prime and have something on offer to those insects.

Winter fragrance can range from heady and intoxicating which you notice from several meters away to delicate perfume which you need to stoop down to experience. As an added bonus winter flowering plants often flower for longer than summer bloomers.

Witch Hazel (A.K.A. Hamamelis) A showy shrub which is adorned with colourful clusters of filament flowers in the winter months.

border with it’s blooms and also with the fiery coloured foliage in the autumn. Fairly slow growing these plants are good as a solitary plant or within a mixed shrub border. Forming a V shape, they need some space to spread out.

Viburnum – The best for this time of year is V. Bodnantense. There are several cultivated forms of this highly scented shrub, the most well known of which in V. Bod. ‘Dawn’. An upright shrub, it carries pale pink flower clusters at the end of it’s branches on and off for November to March depending on the weather. Suitable for the back of a border due to it’s height.

Sarcococca (A.K.A Winter Box) – I am a great fan of this shrub as it offers not only heavily scented white flowers in winter but they are also followed by small blackblue berries and surrounded by deep green glossy foliage.

Some varieties can reach 1-1.5m at maturity but if you choose S. Humilis or a similar compact form, it can be grown in a pot and moved closer to the house when in flower.

Skimmia – A very popular shrub, often bought for the burgundy buds found on S. Rubella. These buds are held into winter and then finally burst to reveal cream blooms with a light scent. Several other varieties also bear winter berries.

Snowdrops – One of those winter scent plants you have to bend down to smell, Snowdrops not only add a delicate white froth to the ground in winter but a gentle honey-like perfume too. Varieties such as ‘Magnet’, ‘S.Arnott’ & ‘Atkinsii’ are noted for their fragrance.

Crocus – A showy bulb for late winter, Crocus add a very colourful splash and lend themselves to being grown in borders, pots and rockeries. They carry a gentle honey-like perfume. Some Crocus have large showy petals and can be combined with winter flowering bedding plants for a good show.

More elegant forms such as C. Tommasinianus and is good for naturalising beneath shrubs and trees or in the lawn or meadow.

Mahonia – Mentioned in a couple of my recent articles, this shrub is at it’s best now. The large scented yellow flowers are showy, brightening up otherwise dull borders and the scent is caught by the air and drifts around the garden, particularly on mild days. belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

Army Visitors Fight Corner For STEM Subjects Army personnel visited Ibstock Community College to talk to students about the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

The officers worked with students from all year groups on small STEM projects, such as designing nutrition bars and jackets to keep cool.

They also talked to students about the ways in which STEM subjects are used in the army, in areas such as medicine, engineering and logistics.

Both officers explained their roles in the army and answered questions about the range of career options on offer in the armed forces.

Science teacher Caroline Sharkey said: "All of the students - both girls and boys, from Year 7 through to Year 9 - were completely engaged in the sessions. More than 60 per cent of jobs are predicted to require STEM subjects in 10 years' time so it is vital that students recognise the relevance of these subjects and how they can be used in the future."

HS2 Action Group Over 100 people attended the inaugural meeting of local HS2 action group at Measham Leisure Centre. The meeting agreed a constitution, appointed a committee and set up various task groups. I have offered to support the group in an advisory capacity.

District and County Council scrutiny committees are receiving reports on HS2 and the District Council have appointed consultants SLC Rail to advise them. SLC Rail said they were keen to take on board local views and I have arranged for one of their people to attend the next public meeting in Appleby Magna. I shall be making a written submission to the County Council’s Environment and Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee and attending the presentation to the public by HS2 representatives on 18th January. It will be interesting to see how HS2 respond to public questioning.

I have several questions myself – can they provide the minutes of their meetings with lobbyists during the consultation on the western route through Measham?

How did the Government come to reject a bad route in favour of one which has an even worse impact?

Given that decision, do they plan to mitigate against all the impacts or if that’s not possible, will they be rejecting the eastern route as well? Where is the evidence that overall journey saving times and value for money claims for HS2 are achievable? If the conclusion is reached that the Leeds leg of HS2 cannot meet its targets, what is the next best strategic alternative to improve the rail network?

AB Produce Anaerobic Digester The Environment Agency is holding a public consultation on the AB Produce application for a permit to operate an anaerobic digester. The consultation is open until the 6th February and can be accessed online here https:// consult.environment-agency.gov. uk/psc/de12-7dt-a-b-produceplc/ The anaerobic digester has the potential to substantially eliminate the odour problem from the factory, providing it works properly. If there are problems in the future, the limits of the Environment Agency’s powers to intervene will be largely determined by the permit. It’s important therefore that the permit covers everything it needs to, and the consultation offers the chance to influence that.

HGV weight restrictions The County Council has been in discussions with the police to try to agree how best to enforce the HGV weight restrictions in Measham. The County Council

ANDREW BRIDGEN determine where weight restrictions should apply and then hand the task of enforcing them to the police. I am a long standing critic of this arrangement as I think most people would agree the police have far better things to do with their time. My suggestion many years ago that County Council trading standards should take on enforcement duties was rejected. Instead the County Council have chosen to persevere with the police.

Yet there are problems. HGV weight restrictions were drawn up at different times and can vary from place to place. The police don’t like this – they operate County wide and want to be consistent.

For example, Measham’s weight restrictions cover agricultural vehicles. In most other areas of Leicestershire this is not the case, and consequently the police are reluctant to take action against agricultural vehicles on weight restricted roads in Measham.

In their discussions with the County Council, I believe police have asked for all weight restriction orders to be brought into line.

Yet in Measham, there have been numerous complaints about agricultural vehicles cutting through the village and a serious problem with tractors pulling tankers full of material that starts its journey as industrial waste, but on arrival is magically transformed into fertilizer… I have told officers at the County Council that just walking away from these problems is not an answer, and I have called for a meeting involving parish council representatives to try to find a way forward.

Planning Decision, Queen’s Street I attended the District Council’s planning committee this month to speak up against plans to build seven properties on land at the end of Queen’s Street, Measham.

There is already planning permission for five properties, and the new proposal looked to me like an attempt to overdevelop the site. The plans were pushing over the boundary onto a neighbouring property and the road layout was too tight to meet County Council design guidelines. Despite this, the planning committee passed it. However, I am hopeful that the District Council will now strike a deal with the developer over the adjacent Queensway House, which is empty, to combine the two sites into one development that has the potential to deliver something worthwhile in the centre of the village to meet local housing needs. I know that a number of other councillors share the same aim.

Last week the Prime Minister set out the Government’s 12 negotiating objectives for Brexit.

I believe each of these objectives were reasonable and fair to both the UK and the EU. A sensible organisation looking at this situation objectively would allow free trade in goods between the EU and the UK with access to services where the regulatory framework allowed. If the EU refuse this sensible proposition then we should not be afraid to walk away and adopt World Trade Organisation rules. We have Countries queuing up to negotiate trade deals with us, primarily the new United States administration who I believe will take a dim view of any vengeful antics against the UK by the European Union.

It is an established fact that the trade between EU Countries.

Looking at this deal from business perspective, it would an act of kamikaze proportions to risk damaging this relationship for the sake of exacting punishment and revenge against a Country that democratically decided it does not wish to remain part of your organisation.

It also serves to highlight why we have taken the right decision in not being shackled to them any longer as their reaction to the referendum result has been tantamount to bullying.

Let us also not forget how much money the UK has pumped into the EU project. It amounts to over £60 billion in net contributions since 2010 alone, and many billions of pounds before that.

Money we had to borrow and on which we are paying interest.

Britain’s contribution to the EU budget amounts to more than the rest of the member countries combined if you exclude Germany. If you also consider the many billions of pounds more that we spend on defence than Germany, France or Italy, there is a realism that the UK has propped the EU up for many years and that should be appreciated during the negotiation.

If in its attempts to frighten other EU nations who might be thinking of leaving, the EU look

to punish the UK in any trade agreement talks, let us not forget who would really suffer. It is the people of Europe and their jobs and prosperity. The car worker in Germany, the tourist worker in Spain, the farmer in France.

The EU elite would do well to remember this.

As I write this, the Supreme Court have decreed that Article 50 will need Parliamentary approval to be triggered. This is a disappointing but not a surprising decision, and I do not believe it will hold up invoking article 50, as the Government will move swiftly to enact the legislation and keep to the timetable that has been set out.

There is much concern regarding the proposal to downgrade one of the A & E departments in Staffordshire at present and the potential threat to the unit at Burton which would cover a significant portion of the District.

I and my colleagues for whom Burton serves are very clear that this should not happen.

Burton has a very busy A and E department and we have growing populations.

We do need public support however and I would urge all of those who share my concerns to sign the petition against the downgrade which can be found at www.saveburtonaande.com On the wider issue of the NHS, there has been much in the media about the pressures within the organisation. There is obviously an ever growing demand, particularly for A and E services. A and E attendances are up nearly 25% since 2010, that’s 4.3 million more admissions and whilst we are putting billions of pounds more into the NHS, it is not just more money that will deal with this issue. We also need to look at the issues delaying discharge such as the setting up of care packages so we can ease up the ‘bed blocking’ problem. The Government is doing what it can to improve the NHS to keep it sustainable for the years to come.

Clare is a founding director of Moving Made Cheaper and gained her level 3 qualifications in residential sales and lettings, allowing her and the company to become members of both NAEA and ARLA. Clare was born, and continues to live, in Loughborough and so has a wonderful knowledge of the town and surrounding areas.

Following a customer focused career with an airline, Stef joined our team in 2013 to start a new career in estate agency. Stef has always lived in Shepshed and so has a great working knowledge of it and the surrounding area. She has completed her NVQ Level 3 in Sale of Residential Property and enjoys reviewing our properties, maintaining the contact and support with vendors, and undertaking viewings and property inspections.

Olivia joined Moving Made Cheaper in 2015 to pursue her interest in property and lettings.

Olivia has successfully completed a Level 2 apprenticeship and is currently undertaking Level 3 Diploma in Residential Property Letting and Management.
