Council Pledges Funds To Support Canal Aqueduct Restoration A £20,000 grant from North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) will support a project to restore a section of Ashby Canal.

Councillors have pledged the funding to help rebuild of the aqueduct over the Gilwiskaw Brook at Snarestone.

There has now been 30 years of active restoration by Ashby Canal Trust, Ashby Canal Association and Measham Canal Restoration Group. The reconstruction of the aqueduct is now a priority to these groups due to the position and focal importance along the canal route.

It is estimated that the restoration of the aqueduct will cost £450,000 in total, with fund-raising progressing well and now boosted

by NWLDC’s contribution. Further funding applications are being progressed to raise the remaining money.

Councillor Alison Smith, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “We believe this is a really worthwhile project and brings a number of benefits to North West Leicestershire. It will help boost the visitor economy, tourism and recreation while also providing options for sustainable transport and facilitating housing growth. The Ashby Canal is an important part of our cultural heritage and our funding shows that the council wants to see the restoration project succeed.”

The Ashby Canal was built more than 200 years ago but progressively shortened and then filled in after the Second World War. The Gilwiskaw Brook aqueduct was knocked down as the final part of the canal’s closure in 1966.

Geoff Pursglove Chairman of Ashby Canal Trust said: "The Trust is most grateful for the support shown by NWLDC for this major project and for its recognition of the benefits of restoring the Ashby Canal to Measham and, ultimately, to Moira. We have already started discussions with Natural England on the design which will enhance the Special Area of Conservation around Ilott Wharf, unique in Leicestershire.”

The people of Ashby and surrounding villages gave £7,526 during Christian Aid Week in this year’s annual house-to-house collection in May to help those around the world most in need. This, together with other monies from a concert, craft sales, quizzes, coffee mornings and a lunch etc. enabled the local Christian Aid Group to provide funds totalling £10,713 this year.

At a thank-you coffee morning arranged for volunteer collectors on 5th August, Martin Gage, Christian Aid’s Regional Coordinator, thanked the local group and collectors, who have contributed much time and effort,

Ashby Museum News Lieutenant-Colonel Philip Bent VC was a courageous soldier and leader of men whose valour during the Great War deserves greater recognition than it has received to date. He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, yet was educated at Ashby-de-la-Zouch Grammar School. After enlisting as a Private at the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914, Bent showed such talent and leadership that by the time of his VC action on October 1 1917 he was one of the youngest soldiers to hold the rank of (Temporary) Lt-Col in The Leicestershire Regiment, known affectionately as the “Royal Tigers” or simply the “Tigers”. Finally, Lt-Col Bent showed such outstanding gallantry in leading his men from the front in a counter-attack that he was awarded a posthumous VC, on top of his earlier DSO. He was only 26 years old when he was killed leading a charge after shouting, “Come on The Tigers!”

Ashby Museum is publishing a book on the centenary of his death on 1st October, to coincide with the laying of a VC Paving Stone behind the Town War Memorial that Sunday. A temporary exhibition at the Museum will run from mid September until mid November.

The Museum will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Saturday September 16th at 10.30 a.m. Members of the public are very welcome to attend.

Come along and meet us and find out what has been going on during the previous year. Light refreshments are provided.

On Tuesday August 15th retired members of the Leicestershire County Council enjoyed a talk followed by a town history walk and a splendid buffet lunch.

In the afternoon they visited the castle. We can provide this experience for any group interested in discovering more about our town so, if you are considering this for next summer, do get in touch with us.

Friends of Ashby Museum The talk on Wednesday September 20th at 2pm will be about the history of the brewery and will include some information on the work they did on Cafe76.

Measham Memories

Measham has always been fortunate to have well run Cafés serving the village. Currently we have two excellent cafés, Gilly’s Pantry and Bunnies.

These 2 popular cafés follow a long line of eating establishments in the village, from a Transport Cafe to a Hotel.

In fact over the years you would have been able to treat yourself to anything from a bacon sandwich to a Saturday Night Dinner Dance.

One of the early cafés was The Top Cafe, which opened its doors as a transport cafe between the first and second world wars, in a large house called 'The Laurels'.

It closed briefly during the Second World War and became a Tea Packing Factory. The tea packing was moved to Measham from Birmingham, to avoid the Blitz.

In the 1930s Avenue House, a large house at the bottom of the High Street was also turned into a cafe. Avenue House had been built by Mr Hamersley a local Shoe Factory owner, around 1914. This cafe was run by a gentleman called Bill and named, appropriately, Cafe Bill’s. It remained open until the early 1960s when it was demolished and the land incorporated into the Car Auction site. Ashby Civic Society Ashby Civic Society chose unusual transport for their event this month.

Seated on straw bales then drawn by a farm vehicle, we went to see famous prize winning Blackbrook Long Horn cattle then viewed the owners amazing fine art gallery of English animal paintings. John and Pat Stanley of Spring Barrow Lodge, Whitwick made us very welcome and explained the development of the Long Horn herd and the background to the art gallery. Yet another unusual Civic Society event.

Bishop To Open St Helen’s Heritage Centre St Helen’s Community Heritage Centre, which will tell the story of the church, its people and its place in Ashby, will be officially opened by the Bishop of Leicester, Rt Revd Martyn Snow, on Saturday September 30th.

There will also be an open morning for members of the community on Saturday October 7th, from 10am After that, the centre, which will have displays about the history of the church and the archaeology found nearby, will be open for visitors on Wednesdays, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons; the church itself is open every day. There is a full programme of events going on, too. For information, see www.sthelensheritage.co.uk The new Centre will also be available for hire by members of the community and individuals. There is a large hall with access to an outside patio, and a fully-equipped meeting room. The building also boasts a modern catering kitchen and toilets, and is fully accessible throughout.

Members of Ashby Castle Rotary Club have completed a visit to the new North West Leicestershire Day Care Centre operated by charity Hospice Hope. Following the significant support that the Rotary Club have provided to help with Hope House, the charity invited them to have a tour of the new facility and to see where some of the money they have raised has been spent.

Trustees of the charity, Peter and Kate Last hosted the party from the Rotary Club and gave an overview of the progress that the charity has made. Now hosting weekly support cafés in the three local towns of Ashby, Whitwick and Ibstock, the charity has been providing excellent support to people with life limiting illnesses and their carers for some time now. The big dream though was always to open a Day Care Centre in the County following the closure of the Sue Ryder Centre at Staunton Harold in 2002. This dream was realised on 3rd April this year when ‘Hope House’ opened in Griffydam.

Hope House is currently operating for 1 day a week with this increasing to 2 days a week very shortly with the ultimate aim of providing day care to people with life limiting illnesses for 4 days a week. The charity have been making good progress in attracting people to Hope House with 8 people typically attending on a Monday and many more being on the books and able to attend on a week by week basis.

Once the second day a week starts between 16 and 20 guests per week will be expected to attend over the 2 days. Peter went on to explain the running costs of providing these facilities and pointing out that around £40,000 has been spent on making Hope House a peaceful and well equipped day care centre. The big challenge for Hospice Hope remains raising sufficient funds to maintain and increase the operation of Hope House and also in attracting new volunteers to

help with key tasks such as driving guests to and from their homes.

On a typical day guests get picked up by one of Hospice Hope’s volunteer drivers, on arrival guests will have coffee and have the chance to socialise with other guests. A home cooked 2 course lunch is provided with guests able to eat together in the dining area.

In the afternoon there is some form of entertainment provided and there is also the availability of a therapist to provide treatments in a beautifully furnished therapy room. The other advantage of a facility such as this is that it also gives the carer time to themselves to carry out jobs and tasks and to take some time out, safe in the knowledge that their loved ones are being professionally cared for.

Peter finished off by thanking Ashby Castle Rotary Club who have been keen supporters of Hospice Hope in recent years and for the support and financial backing that they have provided.

The Rotary Club have provided members to carry out works in tidying up the gardens as well as providing man power to help clear the home from it’s former use.

In addition the Rotary Club have been able to provide significant funding to help to support the charity with, amongst other charitable donations the club have made, being the chosen major charity recipient of the Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk organised

by Ashby Castle Rotary Club for the last 2 years. Thanks to the fantastic support of local people in supporting this new event the Rotary Club have been able to donate nearly £13,000 to Hospice Hope which has been used to help furnish the dining area, the quiet room and also to provide kitchen equipment at Hope House.

BULBS FOR AUTUMN PLANTING

Daffodils

After what seemed to be an early summer followed by a cloudy and wet July and August it feels like Autumn has approached prematurely! I’m very busy designing gardens for installation and planting throughout the Autumn and Winter and as part of that design process I will be selecting a range of bulbs which will planted amongst the shrubs, perennials and grasses to give an added splash of colour in the early part of the year.

I will use a selection of traditional favourites like Daffodils, Tulips and Alliums chosen for their hardiness, suitability for our local clay soils, height and most importantly their colour. I like to create colour combinations which suit the planting designs I’m creating for each client. Tulips are particularly useful for creating waves of colour in that first year whilst the other plants establish. Below are some of my favourites which can be picked up from garden centres now.

Tulips they are available in every colour under the sun and look stunning through the months of March, April & May. They can be planted directly in the ground or in plastic plots to be plunged into gaps in the border whilst they flower and then lifted out to make space for something else later on. Tulips can look fantastic when planted in blocks for a contemporary look or in waves amongst other perennials.

Orange’ - Queen of the Night (black), Prinses Irene (orange & purple), Ronaldo (burgundy) & Orange Emperor. ‘Soft Pastels’ – White Marvel, Pink Diamond & Shirley (white fringed with purple).

Alliums are perfect for adding a late summer pop of colour above herbaceous perennials.

Their bold blooms in May and June are typically purple or white tight globes. They are the last of the autumn planted bulbs to bloom in my schemes.

If the soil is heavy then I’ll add a handful of grit to the base of the planting hole to aid drainage. I like to plant Alliums in waves through perennial plants, giving them space enough to show off their stunning flowers. ‘Purple Sensation’ is a favourite as they are a reliably perennial mauve flowering variety. I also use ‘Mount Everest’ which holds large white globes on tall stiff stems.

Daffodils add such a lovely cheerful splash of colour from February onwards. Planted en masse they look stunning, but I find that little odd clumps in a border can just look messy, so I try to plant waves so they look more natural. Again there’s a huge selection to choose from.

Planting several varieties in a garden can prolong the season of interest and they will reliably flower year on year. Look out for the scented varieties that are good for cut flowers too. blooms can be jarring. I like to use ‘Pueblo’ which is a mid height creamy white variety and ‘Yellow Cheerfulness’ which bears softlemon yellow double flowers in clusters and happens to be highly scented too. If using more than one variety in a garden I plant them in separate blocks rather than mix them so they do not become jumbled.

Small bulbs can be useful for weaving amongst the front of border plants where they can shine out in early spring. I particularly like Anemone blanda which form gentle carpets of daisy-like flowers which last well in good weather. Anemone ‘White Splendour’ is my favourite although they are available in blue and pink too. Iris reticulata produce very intricately painted small Iris blooms in a range of white, blue and purple. I generally use these in alpine gardens or in pots so that their exquisite flowers do not become swamped and obscured by other plants.

All of those above are available now to be planted in October and November – an easy task which will reward you with a wonderful display in Spring.

Next month I’ll be looking at biennials like Wallflowers and Forget-me-nots which can also be planted in the autumn, to fill gaps and add a great splash of colour.

Council Goes Contactless To Make Car Parks More Convenient

Lace Is Making A Come Back Has anyone else noticed that lace is making a comeback in the ladies and children’s fashion industry? The lace may be printed, embroidered, woven or machine lace. The lace may be in the form of a motif, an edging, part or the entire garment. There is a craft still in current usage that only a few people may be aware of that is bobbin lace. This craft is slowing coming to be a popular craft again due to the popularity of the fashion industry.

before to use town centre car parks in North West Leicestershire thanks to new upgraded machines.

North West Leicestershire District Council will be installing new

state-of-the-art payment points

There is an opportunity to learn the craft yourself. Classes are being held at Groby Village Hall LE6 0DJ on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings. We begin again on September 5th/6th and run for 30 weeks. You are welcome to attend a taster session where you will be introduced to the craft. Basic equipment may be borrowed for the first few weeks; the Tutor has Beginners Kits for sale if required.

for parking by credit or debit card – including contactless payments

– bringing an end to the scramble

The new machines will have no impact on the cost of parking

in council car parks, with prices remaining frozen until 2020.

Car parking machines in Coalville will also now offer drivers the

chance to buy monthly or weekly parking tickets. Quarterly, six-

monthly and annual season tickets remain available through the council’s website.

The changes form part of the

council’s car parking strategy which also saw parking in

Coalville become ‘Free After

Three’ in January of this year.

Make A Splash At Ashby’s Open-Air Pool While School’s Out Ashby’s open air pool has welcomed hundreds of people in the first two weeks of summer holidays as it opens every day to families and lane swimmers. The popular venue at Hood Park Leisure Centre is one of the UK’s last remaining outdoor swimming pools and has already been very busy this year in the warm weather.

Now that the summer holiday is here, North West Leicestershire District Council will open the outdoor pool daily. Responding to customer demand, early morning lane swimming has been introduced this year, along with the usual float and inflatable sessions.

If the sun is shining swimmers are encouraged to bring sun cream as the patio area around the pool is a great sun trap. On the finest summer days the poolside barbecue is also lit to feed hungry swimmers.

Councillor Alison Smith, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: “It has been a beautiful summer so far and it makes sense to make this brilliant and rare facility available to families as often as possible. We’re very lucky to have the open-air pool on our doorstep and if you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to give it a try and enjoy a swim. While children in particular love our pool don’t forget it’s for adults too and there is lane swimming every morning between 9am and 11am Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and 8am to 10am Tuesday and Friday.”

The pool is also available for private party hire on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. On the most miserable and rainy days the pool is likely to remain shut – if in doubt please call ahead on 01530 412181.

Gresley Youth Band Concert In Thringstone Saturday 15th July saw Gresley Youth Band perform to a packed room at Thringstone Community Centre.

Formed in 2002, this band of young people, under their conductor Duncan Jackson performed a variety of both traditional band music and more modern pieces, to include a version of Gary Barlow's Diamond Jubilee song, Sing. Also included were various Disney tunes and what was called 'An Instant Concert' - snippets from 31 tunes with the audience trying to recognise each one before the band moved on to the next.

A spokesperson for the centre said 'We were delighted to see so many people come to listen to these young people perform. The performance was punctuated with what can only be described as 'Christmas Cracker Jokes' between the pieces from conductor Duncan Jackson,which were very entertaining. We are hopeful that the band will come to the centre again in the future.'

Latest News From Felis Catus American pet behaviourist Warren Eckstein said “In the beginning, God created man, but seeing him so feeble He gave him the cat.”

Cats are currently the most popular pet in the world and evidence suggests they were living alongside humans by 6000BC, possibly earlier.

Thought to be incarnations of gods, cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt and killing a cat was punishable by death. Egyptians shaved their eyebrows as a sign of mourning a cat’s death and mourned for months. In the ancient Egyptian city of Bubastis there are about three hundred thousand mummified cats in tombs.

By 3700BC cats were a popular companion animal in Egypt and gained even more favour in their role as pest control agents on ships and in grain stores. It is said they saved the Egyptians from starvation by killing vermin in granaries.

However cats were not always venerated. To the superstitious minds of the Middle Ages cats were thought to possess supernatural powers with involvement in witchcraft. The 1563 Witchcraft Act associated keeping cats with wickedness which resulted in the execution of innumerable cats and their owners.

As cat owners know, cats are not subservient which was another trait resulting in their persecution at this time. It was considered their aloofness violated the biblical view that humans should have dominion over animals. Consequently cats suffered considerable torment and tyranny at the hands of the Christian Church.

Fortunately the popularity of cats returned and by the Victorian era they were secure in the role of the beloved household pets that continues today.

At the risk of upsetting dog-lovers, American writer and producer, Jeff Valdez, said “Cats are smarter than dogs, you can’t get eight cats to pull a sledge through snow” and all cat owners know “dogs have masters, cats have servants”.

According to animal behaviourists dogs have become dependent on humans and should humans cease to exist they would find it difficult to survive. However as most cats still retain some of their wildness and hunting skills they would have no problem surviving without us.

Cats have been the preferred pet of many famous people including

actors, authors, artists and scientists.

Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat-flap for his moggies. Aldous Huxley said “If you want to write, keep cats” and genius Leonardo da Vinci said “The smallest feline is a masterpiece”.

Cats have infiltrated many aspects of our daily lives and are often featured in commercial art and design imagery such as greetings cards, textiles and ornaments. How such a small, relatively insignificant animal can be so popular is quite a mystery, but mystery is probably the allure of cats. Sir Walter Scott agrees. He said “Cats are mysterious folk. There is more passing in their minds than we are aware of”.

Currently the UK cat population is around 11.6 million which animal welfare organisations regard as a crisis.

According to the charity ‘Cats Protection’ a single female cat can have 25,000 descendants within five years.

The importance of neutering both male and female cats cannot be overestimated.

Rescue centres are full of strays and abandoned cats and kittens. It is a myth that a female cat should have ‘just one litter’ and as they can go into heat at four months old it is essential they are spayed by that age. It is also crucial that male cats are neutered. Not only does neutering males prevent unwanted kittens but makes fighting less likely as well as spraying or contracting Feline Aids (FIV).

How Can You Help?

Kittens are growing babies who need more nutrients than their adult counterparts but pregnant and lactating cats can also benefit from the extra nutrition in kitten food.

I am one of thirty-five volunteer cat/ kitten fosterers for RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre and we are all kept busy throughout the year. Cats of all ages and circumstances are fostered for varying lengths of time. The number of abandoned pregnant cats or those with tiny kittens is heartbreaking and so unnecessary if only owners were more responsible.

If fostering isn’t a possible commitment for you, kitten food is continually required at Woodside and donations are always welcome.

Staff And Customers Of Pets At Home Do It Again And Raise An Incredible £2,012.89 For Woodside Animal Centre Leicester is home to some of the biggest animal lovers in England, almost £5,000 has been raised for local rescue centres as a part of a summer fundraising drive for pets in need.

For four weeks, members of the local community donated to help rescue pets in need by purchasing a ‘Scratch and Match’ card in Leicester Pets At Home stores for the Support Adoption For Pets Summer Fundraising Drive, putting themselves in with a chance of winning one of 200,000 prizes and in turn donating £1 to the charity.

Over 430 Pets At Home stores took part in the national fundraiser across the UK, raising an impressive total of £545,486.51. The money has been granted to over 350 pet rescue stores across the country, helping to support the animals within their care.

Amy Wilson, Fundraising Manager from Support Adoption For Pets, said: “Fundraising drives like this are vital to keeping local rescue centres open across the UK, and it’s great that we can continue to support rescue centres who work so hard to rehome pets in across the East Midlands.”

Money raised within the Leicester Fosse Park and St Georges Retail Park Pets at Home stores will be supporting RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre, who have been overwhelmed by the support given to the Summer Fundraising Drive from the local community.

Controversy Over Final HS2 Route The Government’s final decision on the route of HS2 through Measham has proved to be highly controversial. After a very successful local campaign against the eastern route around Measham, HS2 Ltd. responded with a modified version of the western route, which had previously been rejected as unacceptable.

Whilst the ‘improved’ western route avoids the Plastic Omnium factory, it takes a larger slice of the Measham Wharf housing land and pushes the line closer to houses on The Croft and Dysons Close.

There are a number of elderly and disabled residents living there who were not consulted on the new route, nor were the people who recently bought houses on the new development off New Street. On the Blackthorn Way estate, people who were consulted in 2013/14 thought the Government had listened to them, only to be told the line is coming their way after all.

Affected homeowners can apply directly to HS2 Ltd. for compensation, but I think there is also a strong case for compensating the community of Measham as a whole, given that major projects like the Canal Basin and Leisure Centre extension have been put at risk by HS2, but also because of the shoddy way in which the consultation process was conducted. This is something that either the District or County Council will need to take a lead on and I have called for a meeting of interested parties to try to find a common approach.

The Administration at County Hall has its own issues with HS2. One of the cornerstones of the County Council’s Rail Strategy is a belief that a combination of Midland Main Line (MML) electrification and HS2 would deliver fast rail links from Leicester to northern cities, using classical compatible trains which can run on both sets of tracks. However, the Government recently abandoned plans for MML electrification north of Kettering. Consequently, the new MML trains will be bi-mode (diesel and electric) which cannot reach the minimum speed to be allowed onto the HS2 track.

Leicestershire and other East Midlands’ Councils are no doubt vigorously lobbying the Government to complete MML electrification. Yet I can’t help

Andrew Bridgen wondering whether someone close to Government realised that full electrification of MML might improve journey times on major passenger routes like Nottingham to London just enough to undermine the already fragile business case for HS2.

I’ve long said that journey saving time claims for HS2 need probing, alongside the more routinely discussed issues of cost and value for money. With the focus of the debate shifting from local campaign groups and councils to the Parliamentary arena, I’ve contacted the Chair-elect of the House of Commons Select Committee on Transport, Lilian Greenwood MP, to seek help in getting questions raised at the appropriate level.

AB Produce Permit The Environment Agency has issued a permit for the anaerobic digester installed by AB Produce.

The lagoons, which were the main source of bad odours, are not included in the permit, and will not be used. This is very good news. Instead, the digestate will be stored in sealed tanks prior to removal from site. Although the Environment Agency have issued the permit, AB Produce still have to produce a satisfactory odour management plan before the anaerobic digester can become fully operational.

Air Quality In my previous column I wrote about North West Leicestershire having the worst mortality rate due to man-made fine particulate air pollution in the East Midlands.

I submitted a motion to Full Council to investigate why this is and to bring forward an action plan. At the Council meeting, the Tories accepted the call to investigate the data, but amended the motion to produce an action plan only ‘if necessary.’

During the debate I pointed out that the Tory Administration had been dragging its feet for years on updating its Air Quality Action Plan. To then not accept the necessity of doing so in the light of the worst ranking in the East Midlands on a key measure of air pollution, is an indication of how complacent they’ve become.

There has been much discussion in the aftermath of the General Election about the increased amount of abuse candidates are being subjected to. This is something I was victim to myself during the election with several of my posters defaced and a smear leaflet published anonymously and distributed the day before the election.

I also suffered much abuse online through e-mail and social media. I am not alone in this as many MP’s and candidates have reported shocking accounts of abuse and even death threats.

The Prime Minister has rightly called an inquiry into this matter as I believe many good people will be turned off standing for political office This week the House of Commons was scheduled to have a debate to discuss this matter. The debate was however scuppered by the Labour Party choosing to fill the time scheduled debating Parliamentary procedure. It is my belief that the rate and ferocity of this abuse has stepped up since Jeremy Corbyn and the hard left took control of the Labour Party.

It is hardly surprising that such an atmosphere is building up when you have a Shadow Chancellor accusing the Governing Party of murder and urging people to take to the streets to overturn the result of a democratic election.

This is however extending beyond politics as the protesters target local business owners in my constituency. Hard left anti-hunt saboteurs are targeting farm businesses in North West Leicestershire, even if they do not have hunting on their land by protesting outside their grounds and destroying their reputation on social media sites. Let me be clear, these are anarchists who object to our democracy and our way of life and it is totally unacceptable.

This week has also seen the announcement of the final route for HS2 which runs through North West Leicestershire. As far as I am concerned, there are few positives in this announcement other than the blight being removed from communities in Appleby, Packington and to the East of Measham. Clearly there were many faults with the route change that HS2 came up with last year, which I pointed out to them in subsequent discussions.

The truth of the matter is that there is no good route and the only saving grace from the route announced this week is that two important employment hubs at Plastic Omnium and the Hilton Hotel north of East Midlands Airport do not now appear to be at risk of closure.

HS2 continues to be bad news for Measham however and has put the Ashby Canal project and linked regeneration at considerable risk. We will have enormous traffic disruption with work having to be carried out on the A42 and many homes and businesses face years of blight.

I do not believe this £56 billion project to represent value for money and believe those costs will increase sharply. The public do not support this scheme and I will continue to campaign against this White Elephant.

For too long, we have tolerated the creeping rise of a compensation culture across the UK. Whilst there are many genuine circumstances where compensation is rightly due, too often it seems that the public – often driven on by unscrupulous Claims Management Companies – have come to expect something for nothing. Claims companies are now targeting the travel industry, encouraging holidaymakers to make false claims for sickness related to food poisoning.

Travel is just the latest in a longlist of targets over the last decade or so, including PPI claims, compensation for delayed flights, the aforementioned whiplash claims for road traffic accidents, and even clinical negligence, where the body being sued is the National Health Service - with claims ultimately funded by the taxpayer.

One of the problems the Government will clamp down on is cold calling. I have firsthand experience of this, having recently taken a call from one of these companies following an overseas holiday asking if I had been sick while away.

The ban is long overdue. This practice is nothing more than a fishing expedition, and all sides of the House should support our efforts to stop companies harassing members of the public in this way.

Often those making false or exaggerated claims believe they are involved in a victimless crime. This is a line often sold by claims companies too. However, in reality everyone pays for these claims. Prices rise, or insurance premiums increase, as companies seek to recoup their costs – the ABI estimated that whiplash claims cost every UK driver around £50 a year We need to act together to end the UK’s compensation culture, eradicate greedy elements of society that encourage fraudulent activity, and restore the principle of fairness to this area of our civil justice system.
