Paper Poppies And Spray Paint - Local 16 And 17 Year Olds Spend Their Summer Commemorating WWI North West Leicestershire recently welcomed the launch of the second year of National Citizen Service, a scheme which brings together 16-year-olds from different backgrounds throughout the summer after they have taken their GCSE’s. After three weeks of team-building and outdoors activities, the aim is to spend a minimum of 30 hours contributing to their local communities.

It’s often difficult to get young people interested and engaged in heritage history unless they can see it as relevant and meaningful. Although CoS has worked with thousands of local people to discover their local connections to WW1 the involvement from this age group has been minimal…….until now!!! We used this opportunity as a ‘way in’ to enthuse young people about the importance of the Great War and challenged them to remember in their own way.

Together with Filigi, Confident Communities, Coalville Library, Kashmir Arts, Coalville Education Partnership and the Hero Project CIC, groups of local young people initiated, developed and showcased a project to remember those who fought in World War One based specifically on the first 50 men to go to war from the Coalville area.

With huge thanks to Michael Kendrick, author of ‘Fifty Good Men and True’ and historian Stuart Warburton from the Coalville Heritage Society who kindly gifted their time and expertise to inform the work of the young people. Without their dedication and commitment to researching and sharing the memories of Coalville during WW1, the work of the young people would not have been so informed and passionate.

Ashby Civic Society Report Ashby Civic Society were treated to a fascinating practical demonstration from ‘rain man’ Alan Graham of Trent Rivers Trust.

New housing and intensive farming can cause our local River Mease to flood and Alan explained practical methods to reduce the problem.

His working model showed alternative methods of absorbing rainwater by clearly identifying the problems and the solutions for the River Mease which is a special area of conservation.

The Rotary Club have decided to support Hospice Hope again for this years event, the North West Leicestershire charity providing support to people with a life limiting illness. Their ultimate aim of providing a Day Care Centre for local people to support them and their carers is now closer than ever as they are preparing to renovate a property in Griffydam and it seemed to be appropriate to give the charity a helping hand in fulfilling this aim which will be a huge benefit to all in the local area. The event takes participants on a 3km route of Ashby taking in some of the town’s picturesque sights, starting and finishing on the Bath Grounds. As part of the entry fee, all participants are provided with a Santa suit, hat and beard to run or walk in leading to the amazing spectacle of hundreds of Santa’s setting off from the Bath Grounds! The fun starts at 10:45 with a fun warm up to get everybody in to the spirit before the fun run and walk starts at 11:00.

The event is again being organised in conjunction with Ashby Town Council and will complete a great weekend of entertainment in Ashby with the Christmas Fair taking place in the Town the day before. The emphasis of the Fun Run and Walk is on providing a fun Christmas fundraising event suitable for families, friends and groups looking to get in to the Christmas spirit whilst raising funds for some fantastic local causes.

It’s all down to team work and lots of it. Every single person you see at the Venture Theatre is a volunteer. There are no paid staff.

That’s why we are constantly on the look out for new members to come and join us. But it’s not all work!

We have a good social life going with “Club Nights” every Monday evening when the bar is open. Pop in to meet us any Monday evening after 7.30pm and you will be given a warm welcome.

The director of the next play will have set about his or her task even earlier. It is usual for readings to be held for the next play two or three weeks before the current one finishes – so if you were thinking of reading for our Christmas production it is already too late! That doesn’t mean, however, that more people to join the team are not needed. Over the next two or three weeks, the director will be building the team SHEPSHED

Ashby Castle Rotary Club have announced the return of the Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk which will be staged on Sunday 4th December 2016. Following on from last years inaugural event where 625 Santa’s entered to run or walk the course around Ashby de la Zouch, the organisers are hoping for an even larger number of entries to raise money for this years main charity which will again be Hospice Hope.

The current exhibition is on Gunther Pluschow, a German prisoner-of-war at Donington Hall in WW1. The National Arboretum A talk by Roger Hailwood Monday October 24, 2016 Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30 pm.

The Friends of Charnwood Forest are pleased to announce an illustrated talk by Roger Hailwood.

Roger Hailwood is a guide for the National Arboretum. He is part of their promotional team as a speaker at venues throughout the UK. At Alrewas, where he lives, he is regarded as the village historian and he has published several books.

In Alrewas he has been a youth leader, a church chorister and a Parish Councillor.

Roger’s talk about the National Arboretum will be illustrated by slides and will cover its foundation and development, and will give a snapshot of the over three hundred memorials on the site.

Calke Abbey and its gardens There was a large audience of members and guests on Monday September 19th to hear a copiously illustrated talk by Celia Sanger, who is a volunteer at Calke.

Calke Abbey was the home of the Harper-Crewe family for several hundred years. In 1985 the burden of such a great estate became too much and it was acquired by the National Trust.

The repairs and maintenance of such a property had proved too great for the owners and the National Trust was faced with neglect on a grand scale. Nothing had ever been thrown away which was both a problem and an enormous resource. Celia’s illustrations showed us the good times, the bad times and how the National Trust had brought house and gardens back to life.

The old formal gardens, requiring enormous maintenance and many gardeners , are gone forever but in their place is a beautiful estate which we can all enjoy. The deer park, with many red deer, flourishes and the lime avenue, planted in 1846, is as fine as ever.

Andrew Bridgen MP Backs Call For Drivers To Have Regular Sight Checks North West Leicestershire MP, Andrew Bridgen, is backing a call for motorway signs to be used to warn motorists of the danger of driving with poor vision and the need to have regular sight checks.

Calling All Chocaholics It’s all about the chocolate at first-ever ChocFest event. 1920 November 2016 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire It will be chocolate heaven in Melton Mowbray when the firstever ChocFest event takes place from 19-20 November 2016 at the Cattle Market in the town.

ChocFest is a festival of all things chocolate with tastings, demonstrations, talks, workshops and plenty of chocolate and associated food and drink to buy from some of the UK’s best local producers.

The event is supported by Leicesterbased Cocoa Amore, an awardwinning chocolatier. Cocoa Amore will be conducting workshops on the art of making handmade chocolates. Around 60 other exhibitors will be selling chocolaterelated products including cakes, liqueurs, macaroons, drinks, biscuits and desserts plus other stalls selling wine, champagne, cakes, pies and cheese.

Matthew O’Callaghan from the Melton Mowbray Food Partnership, organiser of ChocFest 2016 said: “We British eat £4.6 billion worth of chocolate each year. ChocFest will be the first dedicated, non-trade chocolate festival in the Midlands and will be celebrating all things chocolate.

“There’s a real contrast here by holding the event in Melton Mowbray, more traditionally associated with Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese.

However, as the proclaimed UK rural capital of food, the town is delighted to host the first-ever ChocFest and we’re expecting it be very popular with all the chocolate lovers out there!” continued Matthew.

Well That Was Colourful!

What do you get when you take 500 runners, add a prosecco tent, a dollop of live music and a whole load of paint? The Coalville Colour Run of course!

Coalville’s first ever fun run was a resounding success as hundreds of runners took to the streets in support of local charity Living Without Abuse (LWA).

The event, organised by LWA and supported by North West Leicestershire District Council, saw people pack the streets of Coalville as local athlete Gemma Steel got the race going after some words of encouragement from the council’s deputy leader and LWA Head of Fundraising Gina King.

“I have to say this wouldn’t have been possible without the help from all of my fantastic sponsors and supporters who did an amazing job in helping and supporting me throughout the huge task of organising this event.

I hope everyone had a great time, and I’m already looking forward to next year!”

Now just a few memories from the lots we have collected.

Can you remember the annual circus that used to come to Measham, when all the equipment and the animals arrived by train, and were walked up the High Street to the recreation ground in Bosworth Road. One year someone standing in the doorway of Fletchers bakers shop on the corner of Navigation St gave one of the elephants a loaf., The following year, it must have been the same elephant passing by, he recognised the shop and refused to go past until... YES... until he was given a loaf!

Also can you remember the old chapel in Navigation St, which became Thirlby’s Confectionery Warehouse?

Herds of cattle used to be driven up the High St. from the station.

One day some of the bulls loose and rushed down Navigation St. went in through the open doors of the warehouse and broke down all of the shelves containing the jars of sweets and chocolates. Once they were on their way, Mr Thirlby very kindly said to the kids in the street “HELP YOURSELVES LADS” and of course THEY DID! Despite all the broken glass. (No elf and safety in those days.)

Low Maintenance Autumn is now upon us and the verdant growth we’ve experienced in the garden this summer is slowing down. Now is a good time to consider whether your garden has been up to scratch this year. Many of us are short of time these days with juggling work, family and all of the day to day chores we have to complete before we have time to sit back and relax.

Gardening can become a chore for those who are time poor, but there are ways to reduce the time and effort it takes to keep the garden looking good all year round. When I visit new clients to discuss their needs for their gardens and look at how I can design or enhance their spaces to fulfil their requirements, one of the first questions I ask is how much time they can devote to looking after the plants, lawns and hedges and so on so that I can tailor the design to suit.

From my experience it is often the lawn which requires most care during the spring and summer as it grows abundantly and needs a trim every week or two. Some planting demands deadheading and regular trimming to keep it in shape and then hedges need a haircut once or twice during the year to keep them looking at their best. For some it is weeding which takes up so much of their time and it is difficult to keep on top of the weeds if they are

allowed to run riot early in the season.

There are ways to reduce the ongoing maintenance in the garden but ‘no maintenance’ is improbable if you would like a space which is a joy to look at too!

Key Tips For Low Maintenance Planting: Chose well behaved evergreen shrubs to give all year round structure. Eg. Hebes, Choisya, Euonymous, Buxus, Skimmia Select dwarf and compact forms of plants so that they don’t over grow their space and can be easily trimmed without the need for a ladder or long handled equipment. E.g Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ Look for plant varieties which are repeat flowerers so you get a long period of colour without much effort – e.g Geranium Rozanne will flower from June – September without any deadheading or trimming.

Select the right plant for the right place – Plants always look healthier and grow better if they are sited in an appropriate situation. If you have a sunny garden make sure you buy plants which are suited to that aspect - some shade loving plants will soon look tatty in a sunny spot.

Use ground covering plants to spread beneath shrubs and trees to reduce the emergence of weeds. E.g Heuchera, Tiarella, Geranium ‘Spessart’ Membrane and a covering mulch of wood chip or gravel stops weeds growing in newly planted areas. Lay the membrane on the prepared soil and cut crosses through to enable planting. Cover with mulch and water the plants well. A word of warning through – Black birds love to flick through wood chip and bark looking for insects and it often makes it’s way on to the lawn causing difficulties during mowing.

Start again with the planting – this gives the opportunity to remove thuggish and overgrown plants and start a fresh with plants chosen to give interest throughout the year without high demands on time. Clearing out a border allows invasive weeds to be tackled thoroughly once and for all before the new plants are added. Well worth the work to get a new easily tamed look.

I hope I have given you some ideas for reducing maintenance in your garden. Next month I’ll be looking at how to select and plant bare-root fruit trees that will be available in shops and garden centres soon.

Call For More Uniformed Groups North West Leicestershire District Council is looking to hear from any uniformed groups interested in taking part in this year’s remembrance parade and service.

The groups are needed for the parade and service on Sunday 13 November as the procession makes its way through Coalville to Memorial Square.

Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and St John’s Ambulance, have already pledged their full support and a number of local bikers, including ex-servicemen, have agreed to bring up the rear of the parade but the council is always looking for more groups to get involved.

Steampunk Comes To Leicester New Year event celebrating a Victorian science fiction future set to be hosted in Leicester A society responsible for running the world’s largest Steampunk festival has confirmed that it will be hosting a very special New Year event in Leicester. The Victorian Steampunk Society welcomed over 11,000 people to a Festival in the historic city of Lincoln in August and it is anticipated that the New Year event will bring hundreds of new visitors to Leicester and Leicestershire.

Steampunk was described by IBM’s Social Trend Register as the biggest impact in fashion, retail and marketing of 2014, with the subculture taking roots in art, literature and culture throughout the globe. Taking influences from the steam powered technology of Victorian era, adding a dash of science fiction and a pinch of time travel, the community believe in splendid manners, stunning outfits and afternoon tea.

Leicester Shire Promotions has worked with the event organisers to bring this four-day event to the city, which will be based in the most apt Victorian surroundings of the Mercure Leicester, The Grand Hotel.

The event will take place from 30 December 2016 to 2 January 2017,

with event goers enjoying a number of workshops and activities, a New Year’s Eve gala ball and will also discover more about the fascinating 2,000-year history of Leicester on a guided tour.

John Naylor, event organiser, said: “Leicester was a perfect location for us to look at, as it is in the heart of the UK, has great transport links and lots of fabulous attractions to include for our event goers. Council Coming Down On Fly Tippers One bag of rubbish is all that it could take to get slapped with a £400 fine under new Government legislation.

North West Leicestershire District Council is enforcing a new fixed penalty fine which could see anyone caught fly tipping pay out £400 for their crime.

This new law was introduced

by Government earlier this year in an attempt to reduce the amount of ‘low level’ fly tipping, which can be as little as a single bag of rubbish dumped on the pavement.

The council has already begun enforcing the new law with two recent cases: The council received a report of a collection of black bags dumped on Farm Town Lane, Farm Town.

Upon inspection of the waste the council’s team identified an address in Coalville. After further enquiries they found a name and the person responsible who was interviewed, admitted the offence and subsequently fined to the full amount.

The council’s waste collection crews noticed over a period of time bags of waste being left in the street in the Agar Nook area of Coalville. They investigated the waste and identified it belonging to a nearby business.

Initially council enforcement officers spoke to the owner of the business advising how to correctly dispose of their waste.

However it became clear the owner did not take the advice and continued dumping waste and so was interviewed and the council issued the full fine.

There are many ways to dispose of household waste including: If the waste can be recycled then recycle it. Recycling is fun and easy and if you run out of space request more recycling containers.

Businesses in the district also have a duty to ensure their waste is disposed of correctly. The council operates a competitively priced Trade Waste service to over 700 local businesses. Another option is to pay a legitimate company to dispose of the waste but people must ensure they present their Waste Carriers Licence to do so. Anyone using an unlicensed operator to dispose of their waste will face a similar penalty if caught. Check with the Environment Agency www. environment–agency.gov.uk or call 03708 506506 to check if the operator is licensed.

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Fly tipping is something we are committed to tackling. Why people think it is acceptable to dump their rubbish in some country lane instead of taking it to a tip is beyond me, and it needs to stop.

“We are enforcing this new fixed penalty wherever we can. We are not just combating large fly tips, but small ones too. Just a single bag dumped on the road can be considered a fly tip and the person responsible will face the fixed penalty."

“Those being caught using an unlicensed operator to take their waste away for them will face the same penalty as if they’d dumped the rubbish themselves.

Ignorance is not an excuse, we want everyone to make sure their rubbish is disposed of properly.”

A pet shop that specialises in selling parrots has winged its way to a new home in Leicestershire without ruffling any feathers!

Having completed the first phase of the new outlet the company hopes to extend the new premises by the start of next year.

Midland Parrots was based at a garden centre in Ibstock for seven years but had to find new premises because the owner wanted the space for other purposes. Midland Parrots has now set up a new outlet two miles away in James Street, Coalville.

“It was a big upheaval,” said Bob. The operation took two weeks as the birds, reptiles, and stock were moved at night while trading continued from the shops during daytime.

Owner Bob McClumpha and partner Diane Gray have always been keen on birds and started a part-time business in 2002 selling bird food and toys at Midlands markets, but went fulltine seven years later after Bob was made redundant from the building industry.

They opened up in Ibstock, and then two years ago followed this with another shop in Westgate, Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

As well as parrots, budgies and other exotic and aviary birds the shops sell reptiles and accessories for the parrots and other pets.

The company has customers as far away as Cornwall and the Isle of Wight and also sends items to people in France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and even America.

"The birds coped well, particularly the parrots as they are used to travelling as we take them home every night and move them between the Coalville and Long Eaton shops,” Bob explained.

“I am pleased to say that all the animals have settled in well to their new home.”

Both Bob and general manager Heather Wright, who is in day-today charge of the business, have more birds at their homes that they have rescued or re-homed because their owners could no longer keep them for various reasons.

Bob and Heather offer educational tips on keeping birds in top condition, and with colleague Larry Dean run the East Midlands Parrot Club on the second Tuesday night each month at Pride Park Veterinary Centre in Riverside Road, Derby, where owners discuss items and try to help each other.

It has to be said this was a speculative bid and the outcome, whilst unwelcome, was hardly unexpected. It is a setback, yet one we can all learn from. The Ashby Canal Forum now meets in October to consider the way forward.

At both meetings, whilst the work done by our local beat team was praised, it was agreed that they are overstretched. We don’t see enough of them on the beat, response times are sometimes poor and matters which are considered low-priority like HGV weight restriction enforcement don’t get near enough attention.

The persistent complaint I hear is that areas like ours are overlooked and even ignored.

The decline in rural policing has gone on for too long, but people across Leicestershire will need to speak up in order to make things change.

The owners of the Minorca surface mine, Harworth Estates, are looking to delay the rebuilding of Measham Fields Farmhouse for up to five years to allow the backfilled land to settle. I have called the application in to committee to ensure due consideration is given to the appearance and security of the access onto the land in the intervening period.

A Cross party group of MP’s have met with Jeremy Hunt to put the case that the unit needs to be retained, particularly as Leicester pioneered the extra corporeal membrane oxygenation service and it remains the largest in the country.

There were several encouraging pieces of economic data last month which suggests post Brexit that unemployment fell both locally and nationally, average wage growth has increased by 2.4% and retail sales are up 6% compared to last year. No doubt the economists who were forecasting immediate economic disaster following the referendum vote in June will be busy explaining the reasons why there forecasts were wrong.

This is the second time in 4 years this plan has come up, and I cannot understand why NHS England have come back with the scheme again. Should the unit close, we would be the only region in the UK not to have its own unit, which is ridiculous considering our current and expected population growth.

We have seen the old Pick and Shovel replaced with an impressive new housing development but there is no doubt that there remains much to do. There is also a limit to what the Council can do.

The town is in need of external investment and I am doing what I can to sell the potential of Coalville as a retail and leisure destination to potential developers and investors.

After Council officers agreed to suspend an abatement notice against the smell from AB Produce earlier in the year, I warned that further action might be required. The Council’s legal officers have seemed reluctant to act, but with the Council having been inundated with complaints this summer, surely they can’t wait any longer.

Comprehensive education gives the best chances to the vast majority of children and good schools find ways to cater to a wide range of abilities, all under one roof. As such, comprehensive schools are a better reflection of our modern society which promotes equal opportunities, through which people might

An example of how local people benefit from the housing growth is through the New Homes Bonus.

This is money paid by Central Government to the District Council for every new home that is delivered in the District. As we have been delivering around 700 new homes per year, this has meant the Council has received funding of over £2 million in the last financial year. Money which has enabled it to freeze Council tax and pledge finance for a makeover of Coalville.

The District Council Enforcement Team are responding to a complaint against David Wilson Homes over a potential breach of planning conditions regarding provision of traffic calming on Atherstone Road.

The Government have announced plans to bring back grammar schools. Whilst they might portray this as selection by ability, the reality for many children would be rejection, long-lasting feelings of failure and a second class education. I would hope that this backward move will not find favour in Leicestershire, which has maintained a strong attachment to comprehensive education.

Also, Leicestershire has some very good High Schools, and I really cannot see them volunteering to become secondary moderns, or the new equivalent.

Our district is also an attractive place to live offering a good standard of living, particularly as we are at the heart of the ever developing National Forest. This does bring pressures such as on housing and infrastructure and I am steadfast in challenging our Councils and Government to see we reap and retain locally our share of the benefits of growth.

I shall be attending a site meeting with a Highways Officer and a local resident to take a further look at ongoing road safety concerns at Five Lanes End junction, near Measham.

OCTOBER; BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Spotlight On This month we turn the spotlight on a brand new local charity; Supporting Confidence Through Exercise. This new charity aims to provide the very best possible support for people living with or in remission from life changing conditions through exercise and holistic support.

The Charity launched its first programme, The Pink Ribbon Programme, on the 6th June 2016 at Hood Park Leisure Centre. The Pink Ribbon Programme is designed specifically for Breast Cancer Survivors and is a post-operative, pilates based programme to help survivors regain mobility and improve strength and posture. It runs for 8 weeks in small groups of no more than 6 and is complimented with a structured home exercise support booklet. Due to demand a second programme is being delivered commencing Thursday October 13th at Hall Lane Methodist Church (Next to the Rugby Club) in Whitwick from 7 till 9pm. Anyone with experience of Breast Cancer challenges is very welcome. To book a place please contact Michelle on 01530 273366.

Having been awarded funding by North West Leicestershire District Council, both programmes are to be provided, free of charge during 2016 and the goal is to deliver the programme countywide during 2017.

In the future, the Charity aims to gradually incorporate further specialised programmes/workshops to meet the needs of a much wider variety of conditions including Cancer Survivorship, Falls Prevention, Mental Health and Neurological conditions. All programmes will be aimed at providing opportunities to build self-esteem and encourage those enduring challenges both physically and mentally to participate in activities and enjoy a healthy and fulfilling life.

So how can you help?

Now is the perfect time to get involved. As with any charity, Supporting Confidence Through Exercise relies on donations in order to deliver services and to make a difference to the health of individuals in our community. The goal is to make their services accessible, to improve people’s lives and wellbeing and most importantly to deliver this completely free for participants.

If you would like to organise fundraising activities or make a regular donation to help to continue and develop services then please feel free to get in touch. You would be improving the lives of many individuals across North West Leicestershire, supporting them to overcome the challenges associated with living with a chronic condition.
