Aimed at children aged 2-6 years old, the party included a chilling character hunt around the library, lots of spooky songs and stories and creepy crafts for everyone to make. This is Hallowe-en – Ashby School Style!

A week of Hallowe’en activities at Ashby School gave students lots of fun in form time and a chance to explore their creative talents.

Pumpkin carving, spooky games and a Hallowe’en quiz were all organised in the run-up to Hallowe’en.

Students in all eight Houses were challenged to design and carve a pumpkin, with valuable House points up for grabs for the winners.

Others raised money for their House charity by organising a scary film night with Hallowe’en fancy dress, while Sixth Formers collected £700 towards their end-of-year prom fund by running an after-school quiz.

Many of the pumpkins used for carving were later transformed into pumpkin pies in the school’s food technology department.

Deputy headteacher Geoff Staniforth said: “Hallowe’en was great fun. Students from all Houses and year groups worked together on pumpkins and other challenges which all helped to boost their team-working skills and their creativity.”

Get Wrapped Up For Wear A Funky Scarf Day (Part of Poverty Action Week 2017: Mon 23rd – Sun 29th Jan) Charity Link, which supports people in poverty, hardship or crisis in Leicestershire is asking people to support its annual dress up event, Wear A Funky Scarf Day, which will take place on Friday 27th 2017 January as part of Poverty Action Week (23rd – 29th January).

Frances Susan Chick from London, has recently kindly donated a mezzotinto portrait of Doctor Thomas Kirkland, sketched in 1794, to the Museum. Doctor Kirkland was an Ashby physician/ surgeon in the mid/late 18th century and became nationally famous for tending John Johnson, the servant of Earl Ferrers, hanged for the servant’s murder. The portrait has been in Frances’ family for years.

We have had a successful year with our town walks, both for the general public and specific groups. Although next year’s dates have not yet been finalised we will be offering evening walks from spring until autumn. We can also offer tailor-made daytime walks, to include lunch if required.

Details will appear in later issues.

Our new design Christmas cards are proving to be very popular and are selling well. If you would like something a little different, but still festive, then do come and have a look before they all disappear off the shelves.

Think of a museum as a human place. Despite all the glassencased objects, despite the fancy signage, it is people who make museums. These people are as eager to tell their stories as you are to hear them. Be an active museum-goer, visit with a deliberate purpose and intention.

Friends of Ashby Museum Thank you to all who supported the Quiz Night at Packington Memorial Hall, which was a great success, Everyone enjoyed a fish and chip supper half way through the proceedings.

Keep a look-out in this magazine for details of next year’s spring afternoon tea talks. The first one will be delivered by Ivan Hallam in March, on Ashby’s clock and watch makers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of those featured will be William Salisbury, Samuel Kirk Peplow and William Measures.

This is the third year of Wear a Funky Scarf Day (WFSD), a simple and fun way to help raise funds in support of Charity Link’s work.

Simply don your most funky or favourite scarf for the day and donate an amount of your choice for the pleasure. The funds raised will enable Charity Link to improve the lives of people in desperate need by supplying items that most of us take for granted, including beds, cookers and clothing. The charity also offers help with the cost of utilities and, in emergencies, food.

Charity Link Director, Susan McEniff, says: “Many of the people that Charity Link helps – including elderly and disabled people, the victims of domestic violence and those with a chronic illness – will struggle to keep warm over winter or have to make the awful decision between eating and heating. Wear a Funky Scarf Day enables us to help more people in real hardship to keep warm, have a hot meal and to sleep in a bed at night.

“It would be fantastic to see people of all ages donning their scarves on Wear a Funky Scarf Day to show their support for the most vulnerable individuals and families in our local community. We would also love them to share their ‘scarf selfies’ on social media using the hashtag #funkyscarfday to help increase awareness of the issue of local poverty, as few realise, for example, that one in three children in Leicester is living in poverty.”

Schools and businesses can order a free fundraising pack via the Charity Link website at www.charity-link.org/poverty-action-week or people can simply wear their scarves on the day and donate an amount of their choice to the charity.

Poverty Action Week takes place in January each year to highlight the issue of local poverty and to encourage support for Charity Link’s work in the local community. Charity Link supports people throughout Leicestershire and Northamptonshire and helps around 8,000 individuals and families each year.

Ashby School Is School Of The Year Ashby School has been named School of the Year at a ceremony to mark outstanding sporting achievement.

Ashby School scooped the accolade at the North West Leicestershire Local Sports Alliance Sports Awards 2016 which were held at the Hermitage Leisure Centre, Whitwick, on Thursday 3 November.

The school was nominated for its sporting success at county level and its excellent leadership programme.

In 2015 – 16, Ashby won six county competitions, including a rugby plate, the Charnwood netball league and county cups in wheelchair basketball, football, volleyball and table tennis.

The school was also praised for its leadership programme which gives students of all sporting abilities the opportunity to organise and lead sporting activities around the district.

Vikki Rundle-Brown, Head of PE, said: “We are really proud of all the successes we have achieved over the past year and all the hard work that has gone into them.

“Our ethos is all about getting students to enjoy PE and to join in. If you get that right, the rest becomes easy.”

The school was also nominated in two other categories. The girls’ volleyball team of Klaudia Stanik, Jessica Antill, Siyana Ivanova and Catherine Zake was shortlisted for Team of the Year while Kate Riley made it to the final three for Junior Volunteer of the Year.

Coalville Heroes – Inspiring The Next Generation With Tales Of Career Success Coalville Heroes have been out and about inspiring hundreds of young people with tales of career success from a host of guest speakers as well as encouraging them to get creative.

Julia Burkin and Deana Wildgoose, the people behind the Heroes Project CIC working alongside North West Leicestershire District Council, visited King Edward VII Sixth Form recently with a few guests from local businesses and organisations, who spoke to the young people about careers and being passionate about what they want to do for a career. They gave advice on interview techniques, how to write your CV and how to go about finding that perfect job.

Concert-goers will be treated to a programme of festive music from school bands and musicians, including the school jazz band which regularly entertains audiences around the district.

The performances will be followed by seasonal refreshments served

by Sixth Formers.

Teacher Farnoosh Shahrokhshahi said: “The carol concert has become an integral part of the school’s countdown to Christmas.

“It is wonderful to see so many people from the local community enjoying the performances and the hospitality of our students.”

Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers Exhibition “The Listeners Beaumanor Hall” The above volunteers are providing a display 2nd February until 31st March 2017 in the Library on Granby Street to acknowledge the work carried out by the Listeners at Beaumanor Hall Woodhouse Eaves Leics.

“Beaumanor was the headquarters of the War Office Y Group. This group consisted of hundreds of secret listeners, who would intercept enemy signals and send information back to Bletchley Park for decoding.

Most of these listeners were amateur radio operators. These operators endured extreme conditions on a daily basis in order to ensure as much information could be gleaned as possible prior to important decisions being made.”

The research for this project started with an exhibition by the Friends of Charnwood Museum in 2007 and has continued ever since with an international following by the descendants of former lace workers. A recent exhibition in Loughborough Library further enhanced the story.

Tony will raise several controversial theories relating to the Luddite attack in Loughborough and the reasons why the industry left the town to re-establish in the South West of England and beyond.

Golden Envelopes Found After Coalville Colour Run

Inside the envelope the winners found a golden ticket awarding a free trip to the adventure park Conkers for them and their family.

At the end of the run the participants were blasted with one more cannon of colour and awarded their medals and goody-bags.

Stacey Goldsmith, runner of the colour run and winner of a golden ticket, said: “The run was fantastic and really well organised.

I had a brilliant time. I did it with my son and husband in around 45 minutes and they both really enjoyed it too."

Unique Business Grant Scheme Celebrated Businesses from every corner of North West Leicestershire came together on Thursday 27 October to celebrate a unique grant scheme – Enterprising North West Leicestershire – which has injected more than £400,000 into the local economy.

The celebration event, organised

by North West Leicestershire District Council and hosted by Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel as part of the Leicester Business Festival 2016, saw 20 recipients of the grant get together, share their stories and successes and have a chance to network with other likeminded businesspeople.

After the huge success of the Coalville Colour Run 10 lucky runners found a golden envelope in their goody-bags.

This was the cherry on the cake after an excellent event which saw more than 500 people walk, jog or run Coalville’s first ever fun run. The approximate 5km route was littered with people cheering on the runners as they went past covered in orange, pink, green and blue powered paint.

a runner and he didn’t know it was there, however now he says he will add it to his route."

“Finding the golden envelope was a complete surprise and to find out I won a free family pass to Conkers is great. We have been there once before and loved it so we’re really excited to go back again.”

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We came up with the idea of golden tickets as something extra for a lucky few that took part. It added a little bit of magic to the day, and now we’re here having had an amazing event with 10 golden ticket winners and 10 happy families.”

Enterprising North West Leicestershire awarded grants ranging from £5,000 to £25,000 to 24 small and medium sized businesses across the district totalling £402,162 and subsequently attracting £2,854,724 in private sector investment and creating 66 new jobs. The celebration evening got underway with a welcoming word from Christine Fisher, the council’s chief executive, shortly followed by the Portfolio Holder for Business Councillor Tony Gillard who talked about the grant scheme itself and why it was such an overwhelming success.

The evening was then handed over to the recipients themselves as they took to the stage and talked about their experience with the grant, the council and how the money has helped them. Sapphire Products, Green Science and The Castle Inn were all represented and spoke of their journey.

Products, said: “The council’s Business Focus Team were always enthusiastic and very helpful right from the start. The application process was very straightforward and easy to understand and working with the council made the whole thing even easier.”

Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “This grant was one of a kind; no other council that we know of has done this. I have been travelling the district over the past few weeks visiting the businesses and seeing how our money has helped them. The changes I’ve seen have been incredible and it is clear to see this money has helped them to grow, develop, expand and create new jobs.

“Enterprising North West Leicestershire was brought about to lend a helping hand to businesses from all over the district in taking that next step in making their business go from good to great and from what I’ve seen and heard, it has done just that.”

Due to the success of Enterprising North West Leicestershire the council has pledged £250,000 to helping town centre businesses across the district to regenerate, grow and create new jobs through its new Enterprising Town Centres grant scheme. The grant scheme will see businesses in town centres around the district apply for funding from £500 - £25,000 for new equipment, help them set up or enable them to take on more staff.

We all love to decorate interiors with trees, tinsel & fairy lights and It’s becoming more fashionable to light up our exteriors too. Driving through my hometown seeing garden trees festooned with lights gives me a really festive feel.

For those who don’t want to opt for the bright and flashing themed light set ups on offer, there are other garden related options to add Christmas cheer to the entrance way of the home.

Topiary I love the elegant structure which topiary gives. Box (Buxus) is easily available from garden centres and DIY stores on the run up to Christmas. The most popular shapes are spheres, but for Christmas the cones or pyramids seem most appropriate. Box is the most affordable but Yew (Taxus) and Ilex crenata are good options too as they are not affected by the dreaded Box Blight. Planted in simple terracotta, stone or resin containers they add green formality to either side of a doorway and with the addition of fairy lights they take on a very festive look. Be sure to use exterior grade fairy lights.

shrubs, Heathers, grasses and spring bulbs to replace the summer bedding during the winter months. Adding Winter flowering plants gives added interest. Shrubs & perennials like Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’, Sarcococca humilis (Winter Flowering Box),Nandina and Hellebores like ‘Winter Bells’ give a great display and can be made festive with the addition of berrying shrubs like Gaultheria mucronata & Gaultheria procumbens all available at garden centres.

Eucalyptus, Conifer, Dogwood, Ivy. Alternatively make your own. Florists often sell the metal bases and wire to which you add a selection of festive foliage. Or buy a simple Holly wreath and add your own decorations. Mini baubles available from most stores look great wired on to a wreath for some added glamour.

Potted Christmas Trees As I sit writing this article in midNovember, I have today seen the first potted Christmas trees available at my local supermarket!

For me November is a tad early to be buying a tree for indoor use, but they are great used outdoors where they won’t get too hot or dry and will therefore retain their leaves to Christmas & beyond.

Again these look great with exterior lights and can be decked with florists ribbon (waterproof), cones and berries to give a natural and stylish look.

Christmas Wreaths Wreaths are certainly the most popular way of bringing festive cheer to the entrance way. A simple holly ring gives classic elegance. Lighting Up Shrubs I have an evergreen hedge in front of my home with and matching domes - planted long before I bought the house. They lend themselves well to being adorned with fairy lights to bring a simple shimmer of light to the exterior. I love to arrive home on an evening to see the house lit up - I know Christmas is just around the corner.

Government consultation on possible new route for HS2 Rumours have been circulating for some time that HS2 might be re-routed to the east of Measham.

It wasn’t much of a surprise therefore when the Government recently revived some old proposals for a route which passes near Redbank, Measham cemetery and Leicester Road / Gallows Lane junction.

If this change comes about, it will bring relief to residents and businesses on the western side of Measham, but it could be very unwelcome news indeed for people on the other side of the village, particularly where the line would be raised up on a viaduct and an aqueduct over the River Mease. The noise impact will be significant. The Poets’ estate area looks to be worst affected, with residents at the far ends of Bosworth Road and Leicester Road also impacted.

As one might expect, the Government has re-opened consultation on the new proposals.

This will run until 9th March 2017 and as before, there should be an exhibition in the village.

In my view, the new proposals do not offer any relief overall to Measham residents, it will just mean a different and possibly larger group of people are affected. Meanwhile, the Government has not convincingly answered the questions on the overall value for money of HS2: for example, they have still not demonstrated how they are able to get passengers quickly from the city centres to Toton, the station for the East Midlands.

For these reasons, I shall continue to oppose HS2 and I would urge Measham residents to do likewise.

AB Produce update Following the publication of a High Court judgement, the District Council has provided details of the action they have been taking against AB Produce. Essentially, the Council were seeking a temporary injunction pending a full hearing of the case that required AB Produce to abate the nuisance caused by the smell which so many people have been complaining about. The initial

ANDREW BRIDGEN hearing in the High Court was adjourned due to a lack of court time. This gave AB Produce time to comply with the requirements of the draft injunction, which they achieved by significantly ramping up their efforts to clear out the smelly effluent from their lagoons, although on a side note, there are still some issues about the road traffic that this operation generated.

In response, the Council decided not to pursue the injunction, but the hearing went ahead nevertheless as there was a dispute over who should pay the costs. In the end, the Judge decided each side should pay their own costs, which the Council took as a vindication of their actions in the case.

There is still litigation ongoing.

AB produce is appealing against the abatement notice served by the Council in August 2015, which was due to be heard in Leicester Magistrates Court on 18th November.

I have to say that whilst the District Council have not acted as quickly as I and many others would have liked, the Council’s officers have performed well in the exercise of the legal powers available to them in the interests of Measham residents. Let’s hope the outcome of all this brings an end to the smell.

Measham conservation area The District Council is consulting on proposed changes to the Measham conservation area, which is designed to maintain the historic character of the village. Ashby Canal A new bid has been put together

by Ashby Canal Association and Ashby Canal Trust for a £200,000 legacy fund. If the bid is successful, the funding will go towards the construction of an aqueduct at Gilwiskaw Brook as part of the canal restoration. Best of luck to those behind the bid!

Earlier this month, Amazon formally took possession of their new one million sq ft distribution centre located at Ellistown. The unit which will create over 500 new full time jobs and many more temporary seasonal vacancies is the size of 20 football pitches and represents a significant boost to our already strong local economy.

For Amazon to set up here shows confidence in our District and our workforce and highlights again the important role in our local economy that is played by logistics.

In our area, around a third of all the jobs are distribution or distribution related with many provided at East Midlands Airport which is second only to Heathrow in the amount of cargo freight that it handles. These jobs will be soon supplemented by the East Midlands Gateway located north of the airport which looks set to create another 7000 jobs and which will boost our economic growth for years to come.

With its key role in our local economy, I take a great interest in how Government policy affects the logistics industry and act in Parliament as the Treasurer of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Freight Transport, and I believe I am the only MP to be a qualified transport manager. This week, I chaired a logistics policy forum and it is clear that while the increasing efficiency of the industry continues apace, there are fundamental challenges is faces.

Over the last 15 years, the average age of a lorry driver has increased from 45.3 years old to 48 years old.

Clearly this is a worrying trend and more must be done to promote both HGV driving and all the other jobs in logistics in our schools and colleges.

I am therefore pushing the Government for more vocational funding for logistics based courses and qualifications. I also believe there should be more promotion of a career in logistics within our education sector. The logistics industry is worth £55 billion a year to the UK and makes up 5% of our total economy. It also underpins so much of the rest of our economy. We should be proud to be at the heart of

this industry and of its huge contribution to our economy.

Our local economy is continuing to perform and provide growth and jobs. I would urge anyone looking for a job or new career to attend the jobs fair being held at Stephenson College on the 28th October. Over 2,500 jobs are available and careers guidance is on hand. Unemployment is down by over 100 people in the District over the last year and the constituency is in the top 20% when it comes providing employment.

I was disappointed to learn that North West Leicestershire District Council are making moves to reverse their opposition to HS2.

I read with interest the recent report the Council commissioned into HS2’s impact on the District and found its arguments "in favour " totally unconvincing. For instance, the report tries to argue that cutting down trees in the National Forest that have matured over the last 2 decades will present an opportunity to plant new trees! This seems an utterly ludicrous argument. If the second phase of HS2 does go ahead, North West Leicestershire faces years of disruption which will have an economic impact on the area on top of the blight we have suffered since January 2013, with the benefit of being able to get to London from Birmingham a few minutes quicker , but paying more for the service in nearly 20 years’ time I will urging Councillors at NWLDC to reject the attempt to reverse opposition to this scheme which I believe is a white elephant growing larger all the time.

On the subject of the National Forest, I was pleased to attend a reception in Parliament to mark 25 years of the company. The Defra Minister Therese Coffey spoke of how impressed the Government has been with the transformation of our local landscape. From a base of 6% tree cover, it has increased to over 20% and is continuing to increase and provide new industry and jobs as well as a much enhance environment in which to live , work and visit.
