Business Winners Are Real Deal A team of Year 12 students from Ashby School were heat winners in a national business and economics competition - and will now progress to the national final in June.

Josh O'Connor, Ellie Burchall, Sophie Keech, Mia Thomas, Michael Yates and Harry Davies came first in the Midlands heat of the ICAEW BASE 2016 national business and economics competition.

Each team was asked to take on the role of chartered accountants and to advise a virtual company on their next steps. They were then asked to present their

findings to a room of 90 people, including the four judges, before answering questions from the judges.

Sophie Keech said "I didn't think we had come close to winning so, when they said we'd won, we were in shock! The judges were assessing our business skills and knowledge but it was also about a lot of other skills, like team work and a confident presentation. I thought we worked together really well, especially as we didn't know each other that well beforehand."

The team will now practise their presentation skills in the run-up to the final at the Birmingham Hilton in June where they will be treated to a cocktail reception, three course meal and a free overnight stay.

Venture Theatre News Our next production will by Arms and the Man, a comedy by George Bernard Shaw. It has been said that when Shaw wrote this play he was at the height of his powers as a playwright and that it is his wittiest play ever. What’s more, although it was written at the end of the 19th century, its message is still relevant today. Set in the SerboBulgarian war of 1885, it is not an anti-war play. Shaw is satirizing the glories associated with war and highlighting the foolishness of those who regard it as a romantic adventure. He also pokes fun at the aristocracy and their silly pretentions, which have no place in modern warfare. The nonaristocratic characters in the play are far more sensible and downto-earth than the pompous Major, in whose house the play is set, and are shown to possess a much more business-like efficiency.

The production will be directed by Peter Varden, who has many years of experience at play directing as well as an in-depth knowledge of Shaw’s work. He told us, “Shaw gives us an amusing contrast between wealth and breeding and between intelligence and dimwittedness. As is frequently the case with Shaw, the servants are more aware than their employers.”

Proms And Picnic In The Park To Celebrate The Queen’s Birthday Coalville’s popular community events Proms and Picnic in the Park are being moved forward to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.

The weekend of 11 and 12 June will play host to the ever popular free events Proms and Picnic in the Park organised by North West Leicestershire District Council.

Proms in the Park on Saturday 11 June is a wonderful evening of music and entertainment set in Coalville Park. A selection of bands will including a Queen tribute will keep the crowd entertained as they relax with food and drink available on site.

Sunday 12 June sees Coalville Park once again transformed as Picnic in the Park gets underway from noon.

It is a day of free family friendly fun with live bands, arts workshops, street entertainers, children’s rides, stalls, food and drink.

Bookings are now being taken for organisations, charities and businesses who would like to take up a pitch on the Sunday.

Organisers are looking for a variety of stalls, from fundraising to promotion, from crafts to businesses, anything that can make the event something special to go along to.

The Cardiac Centre Of Excellence On Your Doorstep

Norman Griffiths learns about the exciting research at Leicester’s Hospitals It can come as a shock if you are unfortunate enough to suffer a heart attack or find yourself opposite a consultant who tells you that you need heart surgery.

medications and also the detection of specific particles in the blood released which may help identify patients at risk of kidney damage.

Relatives and friends will rally around and will invariably re-assure you that if it needs to be done, you can’t find a better place to have the procedure than at Glenfield Hospital with its reputation as a centre of excellence. Not only is the quality of care high, the hospital is also home to the University of Leicester British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre (CVRC).

Blood transfusions can play a critical role in heart surgery and the team has identified that microscopic particles may be released from the blood cells during storage. The research involves the washing of blood cells immediately before transfusion to prevent the particles being transferred to the patient.

Research such as this needs patient involvement and to help facilitate this, a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group dedicated to the cardiac research project has been formed. The group meets to receive and comment on updates from the research teams and to help the professional staff by giving the patient and public perspective.

Members also help make sure communication with patients is clear and easily understood and spread the word about the research that is going on at Leicester’s Hospitals.

Cardiovascular disease kills more than 160,000 people in the UK every year and the CVRC further strengthens and consolidates Leicester’s position as a leading international centre for heart research. It aims to bring together scientists, doctors and patients to improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment available. The team at the CVRC is led by Professor Gavin Murphy, British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Leicester.

“People who undergo heart surgery currently have a risk of suffering organ failure of up to 30 per cent,” he explained. “This is caused by the inevitable trauma and stress the body undergoes during these operations, which can lead to organ damage. Current research is focused on finding new treatments that could be used to try to prevent this organ failure.”

The most affected organs are the heart, kidney and lungs.

Clinical trials have taken place to look at the causes of kidney complications in adults and children. These include the preventative effects of certain

“Having been through the experience myself, I was able to give my perspectives on what information people in that situation benefit from knowing, including increasing their activity levels to build confidence,” he said. “A few years on it is extremely rewarding to see the website helping so many people to get through what can be a tough time.”

Terry Finnigan, a Groby resident of 20 years, is another prime example. Fourteen years ago he suffered a heart attack and collapsed at a Jubilee Party.

He was lucky, as there were four nurses there who gave him lifesaving resuscitation until an ambulance took him to hospital. Three weeks later he had surgery at Glenfield Hospital and had a miniature Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) inserted which automatically sends a shock to restart his heart if it stops beating.

Commenting on the part played by the PPI group Professor Murphy said “By making the PPI part of our research strategy we will ensure that our research best reflects the needs and concerns of the community which it aims to help. We would be unable to deliver our current research strategy without the commitment and time kindly given by the previous patients and members of the public who make up the group, which is directly making a difference to both patient experience and research success to an unprecedented extent.”

Terry is well aware that events could have gone the other way.

His gratitude for such a lifesaving intervention and the extra years of active life it has given him have found expression in the tireless volunteer work he does for Leicester’s Hospitals. Not only is he a member of the PPI but he also relishes his involvement in the Take Heart Adult Cardiac Patient Support Group which meets for 2

It also provides him with the opportunity to talk to patients on the cardiac wards.

“For over 13 years I have been a Leicester’s Hospitals’ volunteer and member of Take Heart which supports the cardiac wards in all three hospitals, though primarily at Glenfield where I visit the cardiac wards,” he said. “I am able to talk to them while looking healthy and can therefore reassure them.”

And with a background as a semi-professional entertainer in Leicester he knows just how to put patients at ease and even put a smile on an anxious face. “I got involved with the PPI group a few years ago and so far am 'spreading the word' regarding Professor Gavin Murphy and the wonderful benefits of his research.”

Andrew Bridgen MP Visits Various Community Projects With Local Community Champion On Friday 12th February Andrew Bridgen MP visited various projects in North West Leicestershire with local community champion Deana Wildgoose. They began by visiting Janus Ltd Learning an Alternative Education Provision, led by Susie McGraw and Jacqui Moulton at Oak Tree House in Measham.

Janus offers a tailored education route for young people allowing them to access a broad curriculum which appropriately meets their needs and gives them the best chance of progressing on to their next steps in education, training or employment.

Janus ltd started life on site at the Sir John Moore Foundation in Appleby. Due to its success and growing reputation with local schools new larger premises were located in Measham in 2015. Janus are actively using the local heritage of sites such as the 17th century Sir John Moore School and the iconic industrial Moira Furnace to deliver new accredited courses for young people with funding from the Arts Council. These are proving popular with the children with some fantastic pieces of art being produced as a result.

The Local MP and Deana then visited Snarestone Primary School where they took part in a lively session on British Values and local heritage heroes. During the visit a mural for Snarestone, that had been previously made with the children in classes 5 and 6, was delivered to the school to the delight of the pupils. A 'poem for snarestone' is also being created and soon both will have pride of place in the hall.

The series of visits concluded with a visit to the Sir John Moore Foundation in Appleby Magna.

The Foundation hosts a diverse programme of events and activities and through innovative use of the buildings and grounds it provides social, educational and vocational opportunities for the local community. The local primary school and a number of tenants share the site.

Kristiana, previously a student at Janus and now a volunteer and creative resident at Sir John Moore states: “The Junk Store is a space where I am happy and creative and am surrounded by people that can support me. It provides me with the opportunities to develop my skills, make art and I can have my own workshop space to create pieces for sale, for commission and to develop my own community workshops. By making art out of other peoples rubbish I am also being environmentally friendly.”

Andrew then visited the new gallery which was due to open later that week. This Heritage and Arts funded project shows that nothing stands still at Sir John Moore. Built by local firm Keller Construction and with the smell of fresh paint still lingering the gallery delivers a thoroughly modern twist on a historic site providing a unique space for local creative people to share their ideas and works. Its multipurpose facilities means that it's also available during the day as a private space for business or community meet ups.

This forms part of a wider project around the Stables to develop spaces for the community and for school visits, the gardens are also being transformed to create new and exciting places, including a scent cinema and performance area. The final piece of this element of the jigsaw is the completion of the community room for which all the funds are now in place.

So it's a case of watch this space.

Following the success of the inaugural Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk 2015, Ashby Castle Rotary Club have been able to present a huge cheque to main sponsor Hospice Hope at their breakfast meeting on the 8th March.

A remarkable turnout of 625 Santa’s descended on the Bath Grounds in Ashby to take part in the first ever Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk in late November.

The combination of runners entry fees and support in the form of sponsorship from local businesses in the area enabled the Rotary Club to raise over £6200 from the event to be distributed between main sponsor Hospice Hope and other charities supported by Rotary.

A number of Hospice Hope’s trustees lead by Chairman Stewart Shepherd, attended the Rotary Club’s breakfast meeting to be presented with a cheque for £4700 to assist with the charities fundraising. Already providing support cafes in Ashby, Ibstock and Coalville to help people with life limiting illnesses and their carers, the charity continues to seek funds to achieve their ultimate aim of opening a Day

Care Centre which has been lacking in the whole of North West Leicestershire since the closure of the facility at Staunton Harold in 2002.

On receiving the cheque Stewart explained that the money would go directly in to the fund towards purchase and renovation of a property to provide a Day Care Centre in North West Leicestershire and that the charity were making excellent progress in finding a suitable building to realise the charities aim.

Kevin Sanders, Chairman of the Santa Fun Run Organising Committee said “The Santa Fun Run & Walk far exceeded our clubs expectations in the level of support that we received and for that we thank everybody who played a part in making the day the success that it was. To attract 625 Santa’s in our first year was remarkable and is testament to the wonderful support that local people, businesses, clubs and organisations gave to us. We look forward to bringing this event to Ashby again in 2016 and hope to see even more Santa’s, Rudolphs and Elves running through our local streets!”.

Dressing Richard III

This month Ashby Civic Society were privileged to ‘dress’ TV personality Dominic Smee in armour fit for a king. Dominic is the absolute physical twin of Richard III including the same spinal condition.

He talked us through the necessary design adjustments needed when his own personal armour was created to ensure a comfortable and practical fit.

He also kept us entertained with amusing and sometimes painful anecdotes from his time filming the popular TV programme.

Richard Knox provided historic details on different styles and qualities of armour as he fitted Dominic with his suit from head to toe. Not easy to recognise when finished.

Our next meeting is completely different with a guided visit to the beautiful Beaumanor Hall.

Run As A Superhero To Help Local Charities SMIGFEST 2016

Charity Live Music Event On Good Friday - Coalville For Papworth Hospital Charity Trust

The Rotary Clubs of Leicester, Leicester De Montfort, Leicester Novus and Rotaract are looking for superheroes of all ages to take part in their Superhero Fun Run which takes place on Sunday 17th April at Abbey Park, Leicester.

This family friendly run, which has 5km or 2km courses, will support two local charities; Charity Link, which supports people in poverty, hardship or crisis throughout the county, and Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bikes, which transports emergency blood and other urgent items to benefit patient care.

Stuart Almond, Immediate Past President of The Rotary Club of Leicester, says: “This is a fantastic event which gives superheroes of all ages the chance to dress up and do something amazing for local charities. Superheroes can also choose to raise extra sponsorship for their own favourite charity or their child’s sports team, Scout troop or school club if they wish. Both routes are pushchair

and wheelchair friendly so anyone can join in the fun.”

Susan McEniff, Director at Charity Link, says: “We are thrilled that Charity Link is one of the charities which will be supported by this year’s Superhero Fun Run. Just by taking part superheroes will be making a big difference to the lives of local people in need and the atmosphere on the day is brilliant. We can’t wait to see the array of costumes!”

Awards will be presented for the best dressed superhero, superhero team and superhero dog before the run starts at 11.00am. Those who are less inclined to dress up can simply don the free superhero mask all entrants are given on the day. A family of five can enter for £25 and children under five are free.

Everyone completing the run receives a medal and goody bag.

We are presenting the second “SMIGFEST” live music charity event on March 25th this year, (Smigfest 2016), at Hugglescote Working Men’s Club, to raise more funds for the above charity trust. This is again being held in memory of my late son in law Steven Smith, who sadly died aged just 42 at Papworth Hospital in September 2014 following a very brief illness, leaving his wife Emma and his 12 year old daughter. Steven was born and raised in Ibstock and lived in the immediate Coalville locality all his life, as his wife and daughter still do.

Emma asked for donations at his funeral, and these, together with over £3000 raised at last year’s Smigfest have resulted in a total of over £9000 being given to the charity, as of today.

We often neglect our front gardens as we spend so little time in them, choosing to relax and entertain in the privacy of our back gardens. However as we use them numerous times a day when we leave and return to our home, with a little effort a neat, tidy and uncluttered front garden can be a very welcome site at the end on a hard day at work. The way we present our front garden also sets the tone for our home. Unlike our secluded rear gardens the space at the front of our property is on show to all of those who pass by, our visitors, our neighbours and even the postie! Whether you have a small postage stamp size space or a grand sweeping driveway, sprucing up the front garden is a benefit not only to ourselves but to our community too.

For tiny front gardens a few key plants which provide evergreen structure work well such as topiary, Hebes, Euonymous. Select plants which are low maintenance and suitable for the space is key. Many new properties suffer with huge shrubs planted by the builders which get to be out of hand, so replacing with slow growing compact plants is recommended.

Colour can be added with a few pots of bright seasonal colour or a hanging basket.

shrubs with ornamental grasses and perennials can give a softer look in contrast to the hard lines of the surrounding buildings. The key is to have a good backbone of evergreen and structural shrubs to provide interest throughout the year. All of these work well planted through gravel with an underlying membrane so they can be used in conjunction with hardstanding for vehicles.

For those with space, a tree can offer screening from the neighbours and from road noise, but choose wisely. Avoid large vigorous trees which can get out of hand and cause problems with drainage and building foundations. Instead opt for dwarf or naturally small growing trees like Flowering Cherries, Crab Apples, ornamental Hawthorns or Amelanchier.

Driveways and paving

As I write, our region of the country has suffered a deluge of rain, flooding huge areas of countryside, villages and towns and major flooding events are hit the news headlines frequently.

Increasingly front gardens are being turned into parking areas for vehicles meaning that water which would once have percolated into the ground slowly, simply runs off and directly into gutters and drains causing issues further downstream If you are looking to remodel your front garden to provide belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

hard standing for vehicles be aware that large areas must now be constructed with permeable materials to allow rain water to runoff and percolate through to the ground beneath. Specifically designed paving products are available which look like regular paving blocks but have been cleverly created to deal with water runoff efficiently. Gravel is also a good option although avoid fine pea gravels as they have a tendency to scatter.

Laying two parallel lines of paving stones in line with the car wheels can be sufficient for vehicular access whilst allowing the opportunity for low ground cover planting to weave amongst adding colour and interest and allowing water uptake by the plants. Channel drains work well to remove surface runoff, feeding water into sub-surface pipework or into soakaways.

I hope I’ve inspired you to spruce up your front garden. As spring is well and truly here my mind turns to the seed sowing for my kitchen garden. Next month I’ll be looking at what I’ll be growing to provide me with a bountiful harvest this summer.

Friends Of Ashby Bath Grounds Community Heritage Project

Century Of Stories Visits Moira Primary School On An Exciting Project

FREE Talk and Guided Walk around the Bath Grounds

A Century of Stories is a Heritage Lottery funded project which works with schools, groups and individuals all over Leicestershire with the aim of helping them discover and share their connection to WW1.

The Bath Grounds provide a beautiful venue for community events and sporting endeavour, with marvellous open vistas. They really are the ‘countryside within the town’. But why the unusual name? As late as 1962 there stood on the site of what is now a grassy bank and car park the pride of 19th century Ashby; the Ashby Ivanhoe Baths.

If you want to know more, a free talk on the fascinating history of Ashby Spa and the Bath Grounds followed by a guided walk around the Bath Grounds will be happening on Saturday 23rd April, 2pm, starting at Ivanhoe Social Club, Wilfred Place. The talk will be given by local historian Ken Hillier, from Ashby Museum, who will also lead the guided walk.

The talk and walk is expected to last about 2 hours.

FREE ‘Have a go’ to find out what lies beneath the Bath Grounds Anyone can take part in this exciting free opportunity to ‘have a go’ at archaeology on the Bath Grounds.

Learn how to carry out geophysical and topographic surveys and then have a go yourself and you might just find those buried archaeological remains!

In January 2016 Century of Stories worked with year 4 of Moira Primary School on an exciting project. see how you get on. You can always sign up for more if you like it – most people do!

All sessions are organised and supervised by professional archaeologists. There is no need for any prior knowledge of archaeology.

The children researched a day in the life of a canal boat family and worked in partnership with Wendy Freer of Pudding Bag Productions.

They not only researched and performed their stories but helped with the filming too. Whilst taking part in this project, they qualified for the nationally accredited Explore Arts Award. The project culminated in a class trip to Moira Furnace Museum where they experienced lots of exciting activities including a canal barge trip and it was at the museum that they made their film. The film was launched at an assembly for the proud parents and children on 8th March and is now viewable at bit.ly/21YI9vU

Staying in the EU offers the best deal for British businesses, workers and consumers.

This month, Leicestershire County Council is holding a debate on the EU referendum. To me, the key issue is the extent to which Britain’s economic prosperity depends on our relationship with Europe and how much of that would be at risk if we pulled out.

Latest Government figures show that the EU, taken as a whole, is the UK’s largest trading partner, accounting for 45% of exports and 53% of imports in goods and services in 2014. In addition, 3.3 million jobs across the UK are associated with EU trade, of which over 70,000 are in Leicestershire.

Almost half of all foreign investment into the UK comes from the EU. As well as giving us membership of the biggest single market in the world, the EU confers benefits on those who work in it. British workers have hugely benefited from EU laws that ensure at least four weeks paid holiday and extended maternity and paternity leave. Under EU law, part-time workers enjoy the same rights as full-time staff, and the well-being of workers is protected by high health and safety standards in the workplace.

Travel abroad is easier, safer and cheaper within the EU. Since the EU opened up the European airline market, British holidaymakers have benefited from reduced air fares and more routes. The EU has also introduced compensation for flight delays and free or reduced cost healthcare with a European Health Insurance card. From June 2017, roaming charges will be banned when you use your mobile phone in other EU countries, so you will be able to use your mobile for the same price as at home.

These are just some of the benefits of the EU, although you hardly hear about them in certain sections

of the media, where the talk is all about laws made by unelected officials, how much we would save if we came out and EU migrants being a drain on the economy.

Let’s debunk these myths. EU citizens in the UK don’t claim much in the way of benefits and contribute more than they take out.

EU citizens in the UK pay £1.34 in taxes for every £1 they take in benefits and are 45% less likely to claim benefits than UK citizens.

As for the costs of EU membership - Norway is outside the EU but still makes roughly the same per capita contribution to the EU budget as Britain, and has to abide by EU trade regulations. If we adopted the Norway model, the UK Government would still be faced with up to 94% of the current cost of EU membership, but we would have no say in the law-making process, even if the laws would harm British interests.

Which brings me to the way laws are made within the EU. The European Commission only proposes laws. It is the directly elected European Parliament and the Council of the EU (members state government ministers) that debate, amend and ultimately pass European legislation. Also, only 13.2% of British laws have anything to do with Brussels.

Finally, in case you’re wondering why so much of the media is antiEU, I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the EU limits how much of the British media any one proprietor can own.

In conclusion, I believe that the EU, whilst not perfect – agricultural and foreign policies in particular need overhauling - offers the best deal for businesses, workers and consumers. Where it needs improving, it’s far better to stay in and work with European partners to improve it. It is certainly too big a risk, unless perhaps you are very wealthy, to come out.

Why I’m backing a British exit from the European Union

in mind that 5 million European jobs are dependent on selling goods to the UK.

We have nothing to fear from a British Exit from the European Union. Now the Prime Minister has concluded his negotiations, you will be subjected to a campaign of fear and myth as those wedded to the failing European project seek to scare you into a vote for remain.

In recent years, the UK has enjoyed the highest economic growth rate in the G7 and outstrips the developed economies in Europe. One of the reasons for this is because we have not been shackled to the dead weight that is the Euro. As a market, the EU is barely growing, the real growth opportunities are in the emerging economies in Asia and South America, not in Europe.

I have been a Eurosceptic for many years and fought against proposals to join the Euro more than a decade ago. It is widely accepted that joining the Euro would have been an economic disaster for this Country given the recent issues in the Eurozone, yet the same people who said our economy could not survive if we didn’t join the Euro are now saying a vote for exit would be a disaster. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.

Look at the arguments the pro Europeans are using, for instance that the EU has kept peace in Europe. This is of course a nonsense as it is NATO that has kept the peace in Europe and beyond. To suggest it is the EU is disingenuous in the extreme.

The second scare argument is around the issue of trade and the single market. There are two striking facts, firstly the UK is the 5th largest economy in the world. Secondly we buy far more from the EU than they buy from us, £59 billion more in 2014 to be exact. The pro Europeans like to run us down as an insignificant island that cannot cope on its own without the guiding hand of Brussels. If that were true, how does it explain the £24 billion trade surplus the UK has with non EU Countries i.e The rest of the world.

In simple terms, if we withdraw from the EU, is it credible for the remaining members who make a net £60 billion from the UK to refuse to trade or that they would wish to impose taxes and tariffs. BMW, Audi, VW and Mercedes sold over 600,000 cars in the UK in 2014. Are these companies going to stand for the EU restricting their trade with the world’s 5th biggest economy? Of course not, especially when you consider the current precarious economic situation in the EU. When you hear the argument that 3 million British jobs are dependent on EU trade, also bear

Then there is the issue of the organisation itself, something you will find the pro Europeans are loath to mention. Auditors have now refused to sign off the EU’s Accounts for over 20 years.

Galling when you consider we contribute £12 billion a year to the EU budget with precious little of it finding its way back to the UK. It is a fundamentally undemocratic and corrupt organisation, and have no doubt that its ultimate aim is to create a United States of Europe which will override sovereign Parliaments.

So my message is: do not be taken in by the arguments of scare and fear. A British exit will not result in war, millions of job losses, recession or isolation. The European project is doomed to failure with the migrant crisis proving how divided its Countries are, and the dominance of Germany. The economic union has brought the EU to its knees ,the Schengen free movement area encouraged huge unsustainable population movements and an ever closer political union threatens something even worse. We have one chance to unshackle ourselves from the ball and chain which is EU membership and I will be doing all I can to make the argument for Brexit which I believe is in the UK’s and its citizen’s best interest.
