Anstey Town Charity trustees will be holding their annual grants meeting in April next year to distribute funds to local charities and groups.

Can You Help?

Thank you to the people who contacted Pat Bates re Marwins Engineering as a result of last month’s enquiry.

Although many groups and organisations are no longer able to meet because of Covid-19 restrictions, some are up and running again. Do you need financial help?

Have you got a project that has been hit by the effects of the pandemic? Or a new one that needs to get off the ground?

Applicants must be based in the village or serve the community of Anstey. These include non profit organisations, voluntary groups, youth organisations, sports clubs, faith and community groups. The Charity also has the discretion to award grants to individuals who may require support for educational or special needs projects.

The Trustees require an independently up to date verified or audited statement of accounts. It is also helpful if applicants can indicate what activity, age group, equipment or project the grant is needed for and an approximate costing.

This month our enquiry is from Pam Abbott who would like some information about her mother, Freda Evans.

The Evans family moved to Anstey around 1912 and left around 1938.

Pam’s Mum, Freda Evans, had an accident in 1935, and was badly burned, spending most of that year in the LRI and convalescing at the Zachary Merton and Ellen Towle homes.

She was given a Christmas present by the Anstey Carnival Committee.

The family were living in Edward Street at the time and apparently her life was saved by a man painting a house nearby, who rushed to help her when she ran out of the house.

They are also interested to know how many Anstey residents will benefit from the grants and are required to include a contact name and address and telephone number with their applications.

The charity, under the terms of its scheme laid down by the Charity Commission, cannot invest any of its income, this must be given to the community of Anstey.

However, Anstey Town Charity is able to invest grants and donations with the Charities Investment Fund.

The Trustees are very grateful for the support they receive from the Anstey Parish Council and the Gala Committee but hope that groups who have benefitted from their grants in the past may feel able to make donations to Anstey Town Charity to enhance their work in the local community.

The Charnwood Gardener Article by Peter Flood Befriend the Bullies A few of the gardens I tend are so large compared to their respective houses that I’ve decided the original tenants must have been Viking chieftains, Centranthus will grow almost anywhere... not content with anything less than a small county for their back yard. To keep such spaces permanently pristine would require me to live on-site, gardening through the night - something which neither I, nor my clients, are particularly keen on.

As a result, these gardens necessitate a relaxed attitude towards chaos. Well-frequented areas are kept in check, but the wider garden needs some more imaginative management.

One effective technique is to introduce plants that would be considered thugs in a normal setting. The idea is to outcompete the relentless armies of perennial weeds (such as green alkanet, ground elder and bindweed) with aggressive but attractive interlopers. You don’t need to have several acres to put this into effect – it works well if you’d like a naturalistic and low-maintenance garden too.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.

But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

Centranthus ruber (red valerian) This indestructible sun-worshiper will go berserk and reward you with a lengthy display of deep pink flowers. Leave the seed-heads in July to encourage self-seeding.

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries.

Fragaria vesca (wild/alpine strawberry) These little warriors can colonise an entire border in a couple of seasons – be warned! Not only do they make fabulous ground cover to keep down weeds, but the fruit attracts birds to the garden (and is delicious on ice cream).

As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners.

Symphoricarpus alba (Snowberry) The only shrub on the list, Symphoricarpus will form a dense thicket through which nothing can invade. The flowers are unremarkable but striking white berries cling to the branches through early winter.

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Here are some of my favourites:

Persicaria amplexicaulis (red bistort) Another common name for this is knotweed, so you know it’s going to run riot. Vivid red bottle brush flowers persist until late in the season. It quite likes a moist spot.

NOVEMBER TIP: Relocate any bonfire wood you’ve collected prior to setting it alight. Mice, hedgehogs and all manner of invertebrates could have moved in.

Member Grants We are on the lookout for community projects in our ward of Anstey which could benefit from the grant scheme relaunched by the Council for this annual year. Each of us as Borough Councillors has £500 to award to community projects in their ward. We can both give the grant to one or several projects and the minimum amount we can award is £250, and the maximum is the full £500. Just as a reminder, all Borough Councillors at Charnwood committed £26,000 (£500 each) from the Member Grants Scheme to further support the Charnwood Community Action campaign which is helping communities during the coronavirus pandemic.

Therefore, the 2020/21 budget allocation per Member is £500 to support community activities. All you need to do is contact either one of us and tell us about your project. If it has potential, then you simply fill in an application form on the Council website and we will take it from there. There are set criteria and all applications will be checked by officers at the Council.

The semi-permanent site, known as a Local Testing Site (LTS), has been set up in Limehurst Avenue and opened on Friday 25th September. It is likely to remain open for several months.

Local Testing Sites are designed to supplement existing testing routes such as regional and mobile testing units. They are part of a national network being created by government. Charnwood Borough Council has assisted in providing this site.

The site offers walk-through appointments only. Appointments can be booked at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119.

Please only book a test if you have one of the symptoms of Covid-19, such as a high temperature, a new continuous cough or loss of smell or taste. Users attending the site will be asked to self-swab.

Tier 1 - Medium: • 10pm curfew for bars, pubs and restaurants • Gatherings of more than six people banned, apart from some settings such as funerals and weddings.

Tier 2 - High: • Mixing of households indoors not allowed • Two households can meet in a private garden - rule of six and social distancing rules apply.

Tier 3 - Very high: • No mixing of households indoors and outdoors, including in private gardens • Pubs and bars to close • Restaurants, and pubs that can operate as restaurants, allowed to stay open • Local politicians will decide if gyms, betting shops, casinos, hairdressers and beauty salons should close • Non-essential shops, schools and universities to remain open • Avoid non-essential travel • Travel outside area advised against.

At the time of going to print, Charnwood is in Tier One (medium) which means only national restrictions apply. Leicester City and Oadby and Wigston are in Tier Two (high). The rates in Charnwood have increased over the past few weeks with the latest data showing that higher infection rates are now being seen in young people aged 16 to 24 years old. The information we have received is that this is due to cases connected to Loughborough University, which has happened in almost every other university city and town across the country. If you take these cases out of the Charnwood figures, we would be at similar levels to other districts and boroughs in Leicestershire. The university is working with local and national Public Health teams and are taking all the action that they can to ensure that the spread is stopped.

Charnwood Community Heroes Residents are being urged to enter their nominations for Charnwood Community Heroes 2020 from Thursday 1st October.

The awards, run by Charnwood Borough Council, are a chance to thank people, groups and organisations who have carried out a good deed – no matter how small or large – in our community.

It could be someone who has helped a neighbour, raised funds or is always there for others. Or it could be a group, organisation or business which has carried out some excellent work in the past 12 months. Whilst there isn’t a specific Covid-19 category, they welcome nominations in each of the categories for those that have gone above and beyond during the pandemic.

Covid-19 has meant that the award presentation will be a virtual event this year, presented on the Charnwood Community Heroes and Charnwood Borough Council's Facebook pages throughout the day on Saturday 12thDecember 2020.

This year’s awards are being supported through the council’s collaboration with EEM, a not-for-profit procurement company.

On Sunday November 8, a small service attended by invite only will be held at the Carillon Tower, Queen’s Park, at 10.45am led

Anstey Parish Council are in the process of looking at what options are available for residents to pay their respects this year so you might want to look out for announcements from them too on their website: https://ansteypc.org.uk Updates Bollards - we are very pleased that the pavement parking that was happening outside the Post Office appears to have stopped and that the bollards are now being adhered to. The bollards have been put there for pedestrian safety on the pavement and crossing. Please avoid parking on the white zig zag lines on the road by the crossing.

The Highway Code states that ‘the approach to, and exit from, a pedestrian crossing is marked with zigzag lines. It means that you must not park on them or overtake the leading vehicle when approaching the crossing. Parking here would block the view for pedestrians and the approaching traffic’. Not only do you risk causing a serious accident, you can also be fined and have points added to your licence. White zig zag lines are enforced by local authorities and the police, and they do not require a sign to be enforceable.

Cropston Road Crossing – we are currently still looking into this crossing and there is a more detailed update in Cllr Taylor’s County Council Report within the Your Local magazine this month. We are also submitting a question to the Lead Member for Planning at Charnwood Borough Council to try and find out why such a low-key crossing has been allowed to be implemented by the Barwood Developers.

It has been a busy time with the schools going back and cases of Covid-19 within school settings have risen, albeit slowly. As I write this report, many families are looking forward to half term and hopefully this will stop the rates rising.

I have done a lot of media interviews this month. I did a prerecorded interview for the BBC East Midlands Politics Show on schools returning after the summer break. I took part in the Facebook Live launch of ‘Place to Call Home’; a project involving all East Midlands Councils in finding Foster Placements for refugee children. You may have heard me on a couple of live interviews with Ben Jackson on BBC Leicester Radio about the ‘Place to Call Home’ project and on a piece during National Adoption week.

A selection of some meetings I have been involved with includes: a meeting with Luke Evans MP to discuss a new school opening; meetings with all County Councillors to discuss school placement forecasts for the next 5 years; attending my first Cabinet Meeting as Lead Member for Children & Families; attending Children safeguarding meetings as well as weekly meetings with my Director.

Wildflower Verge Scheme 2021/22 The Wildflower Verge Scheme will be continuing for 2021/22 and the application window is now open. The scheme proved to be very successful last year with 12 parishes taking part. There have been some excellent results of wildflowers flourishing along the roadsides, helping to improve biodiversity and encouraging wildlife to the areas.

Following the success of the Urban Wildflower Project in 2020, Leicestershire County Council (LCC) are pleased to announce that they have now joined forces with the BLUE Campaign https:// bluecampaignhub.com/councils to promote the rewilding of urban verges across the UK. LCC will be the first Council in the Midlands to join this campaign and will be actively working with the BLUE Campaign to make it a success in Leicestershire. A blue heart symbol, made from recycled materials, is placed in the ground where rewilding is taking place. Currently, there are 12 wildflower verges across Leicestershire, with the county council hoping that the BLUE campaign will inspire more communities to get involved.

The process for wildflower verges on the highway network remains the same as last year. Residents can submit an application, but this needs to be supported by a parish council or a community group who are prepared to manage and maintain the area as a wildflower verge. It will also be their responsibility to ensure that the initiative is supported by the immediate locality prior to any initiative taking place. This year marked the largest reduction in the areas of rural verges the county council have cut, therefore allowing wildflowers to thrive and encouraging pollinators.

Data published by the council for the week ending 10th October shows every district in Leicestershire now has rates of over 100 cases for every 100,000 people in the population.

These high rates partly reflect the high levels of testing that are being undertaken. However, the latest data also show that higher infection rates are now being seen in young people aged 16 to 24 years old.

The key message to take from these data are that we must control the spread by covering our faces, keeping our distance from each other and ensuring we wash our hands frequently.

Parking Charges at Bradgate Park Bradgate Park Trust has recently carried out a thorough review of their parking arrangements and is delighted to announce improvements which looks to try and resolve concerns expressed by visitors and residents.

Over the coming months, the Trust is offering new “early bird” (prior to 9am) and late afternoon (after 4pm) parking rates.

Introducing these new rates, which are more competitive than the current day offer, will help to spread visitor attendance more evenly. The Trust has also identified that several people only wish to visit for up to three hours - so they are also introducing a rate for this length of stay.

The trustees have also agreed to introduce changes to parking charges at Newtown Linford and Hunts Hill, reducing prices at Hunts Hill and increasing the day rate at Newtown Linford to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in the village. Parking Consultations, Bradgate Park I have approved the proposals to go out for public consultation for changes to restrictions on road parking within Newtown Linford and Cropston in the areas surrounding Bradgate Park. These will be out for consultation very soon. I am still awaiting plans for Anstey to be finalised.

Cropston Road Crossing, Anstey We have had many residents raise their concerns regarding the new ‘crossing’, which is a dropped kerb, that has been installed on Cropston Road in relation to the new development by the developer, Barwood Homes, on the old Brookside Nursery site.

There has been a lot of confusion about what should have been installed on Cropston Road. There was a previous approved planning application for this site that included a fully signalised crossing (P/15/0963/2), that was approved in 2016. That application was superseded by another planning application (P/17/0881/2) for this site that was approved in July 2018. The condition to address the crossing in the July 2018 approved planning application is this: “No occupation of any dwelling shall take place until a scheme for a crossing facility for Cropston Road in the vicinity of the site has been submitted to and approved in writing. The crossing facility shall be provided in accordance with the approved scheme before occupation of the 10th dwelling and shall thereafter be so retained. REASON: To ensure that the site is safely connected to the facilities in the village and in particular schools, in the interests of sustainability and highway safety”.

There has been no downgrading of a crossing but there is an interpretation of what a ‘crossing facility’ means. As local Councillors, we were all led to believe this would be a more substantial crossing than what has actually been implemented. We are now working to establish whether this interpretation is open to challenge. Unfortunately, it will not be a quick fix and it is clear in the condition that the ‘crossing facility’ does not have to be in place until occupation of the 10th dwelling. This is unlikely to happen until at least the end of this year. We are currently awaiting a further response from Leicestershire County Council before we can consider further action.

Average Speed Camera, Woodhouse Eaves The average speed cameras on Beacon Road, Woodhouse Eaves have been in place for a period of time now. Proposals to roll out more average speed cameras across Leicestershire will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting that is due to be held on 20th October 2020, following the successful trial of seven sites.

The Cabinet are due to consider introducing up to a further seven average speed camera sites across the county. The proposals would see the average speed cameras move locations yearly to change driver behaviour in towns and villages. The proposals under consideration follow a successful scheme which saw cameras installed at seven locations, Sharnford, Walcote, Oadby, Groby, Measham, Woodhouse Eaves and Freeby.

Subject to cabinet approval, sites where communities have previously raised concerns about speeding will be reviewed by the council and the police. Once sites have been identified, consultations will be carried out with residents about the proposed locations.

Since the cameras have been operational just over 17 million vehicles have passed through the sites in Sharnford, Walcote, Measham, Oadby, Woodhouse Eaves and Groby, with 0.09 per cent of those vehicle owners (15,300) issued with notices.

For the Woodhouse Eaves site, the speed limit is 40mph. The data recorded is as follows in the tables below. This includes the number of vehicles passing the cameras, both Eastbound and Westbound.

The speeding data is based on the 85th percentile, which is the speed at which 85% of the traffic will be travelling at or below and

the average speed of vehicles. The data in the table below show driver speeds before, during and after the average speed cameras were installed.

Fines have also been issued to drivers which include, speed awareness courses, conditional offers, where drivers have the choice between a speed awareness course, a fixed penalty fine and points or to contest the penalty in court. There has only been one case that has gone to court. The table below shows this split for both Woodhouse East and West.

At the beginning of lock down, we couldn’t have imagined that the Club would still be unable to meet 6 months later, but here we are almost in October with no sign of a lifting of restrictions.

The Parish Council are, understandably, sticking to government guidelines and a resumption of our events (we are reviewing on a monthly basis) now seems far away. We fully imagined we would be welcoming Mr. Graham Pavey in October with his talk on “The Mistakes Gardeners Make”, but that’s for another day……

I am trying to find a growing tunnel for my tomatoes, cucumber, chilli and aubergines that I grow each year.

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society Article by Peter Smith

For the first time in the history of the History Society, our September meeting was held online. A large number of our members joined in and impressed us with their abilities on Zoom.

The speaker was our old friend Peter Liddle and his subject was medieval pilgrimage from Leicestershire. The prologue of the Canterbury Tales implies that pilgrimages were a normal part of medieval life. Although they were only rarely recorded in documents, we can build a picture using evidence from archaeological finds and other sources. The veneration of saints was an important part of religious practice and churches that held their bones or other relics could attract large numbers of pilgrims and accumulate great wealth. Saints’ shrines were often designed with openings that the faithful could reach or even crawl into to get as close as possible, which was believed to cure illness or give relief from time spent in purgatory after death.

The most prestigious pilgrimages were to international destinations such as Jerusalem, Rome or Santiago de Compostela. Few ordinary people could afford such journeys but we do have two local wills that were made before their authors set off for Spain in 1248 and 1332. At Compostela there arose a tradition of collecting a scallop shell from the beach and this became a symbol of pilgrimage more generally. In St Helen’s church in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, the tomb of an unidentified man depicts him as a pilgrim with a scallop, staff and water bottle.

Within Britain there was a wide network of pilgrimage sites. The monks at Canterbury sold small, lead flasks of water containing a drop of the blood of Thomas Becket and similar “ampullae” became popular for pilgrims to bring home from other sites too. Hundreds of them have now been found by metal detectorists in Leicestershire and more work is needed to match them to different locations.

Walsingham in Norfolk was an important pilgrimage site, where the Virgin Mary had appeared in a vision and directed that a replica of the house of the Annunciation should be built. We know its form only from the images on ampullae.

Beside official saints, there were unofficial, local and sometimes political ones. The Tudors campaigned for their ancestor Henry VI to be canonized and the evidence they collected refers to three pilgrims from Leicestershire who visited his tomb at Windsor.

Leicestershire had its own pilgrimage sites, which local people could reach within a day. The Church of St Mary in the Newarke held a thorn from the Crown of Thorns, which was a gift from the King of France to the Earl of Lancaster. There were churches dedicated to the Anglo-Saxon prince St. Wistan at the site of his murder in Wistow and at Wigston. Peter speculated that the large former monastery at Breedon-on-the-Hill might have been funded through pilgrimage.

And the will of Francis Butler of Hallaton - made in 1532, only just before the Dissolution of the Monasteries largely brought the practice to an end in Britain – directed that his representative should “go on Pyllgramage” not only to Walsingham but also to local holy sites including Langham in Rutland and the chapel of St Morell in Hallaton itself. The Bottle Kicking in Hallaton every Easter Monday starts from the site of the former chapel and is preceded by a parade from the church so it is likely to be a surviving remnant of the pilgrimages that would once have been common.

There was a very positive reaction to this talk and we are planning more but for the time being they will only be open to members of the Society. What is a Celebrant?

An independent celebrant is someone who is trained to preside over civil services such as wedding celebrations, baby namings and funerals.

Unlike a church service or a humanist (atheist) service, an independent celebrant can offer services with some religious or spiritual elements – or none.

Amy Perkins of Anstey, who trained as a funeral celebrant with the Fellowship of Professional Celebrants, recognises that for many people religion does not play a major part in their lives and so they would not choose a church for their funeral but they would still wish for a service full of dignity.

Amy said, “As an independent celebrant, I can provide a unique, personalised funeral or memorial service that reflects the personality and life of the deceased. This can include music or songs, poems and readings, or hymns and prayers – just as the family and the deceased would wish. Their values, needs and wishes are paramount. A funeral service should be uplifting – a time to celebrate and honour the life of a loved one and to cherish their memories, and also a time to share grief and to say goodbye.”

An independent celebrant will spend time with the bereaved family collecting memories and will involve family and friends as much as possible in the creation of the service. The celebrant will then write a personalised tribute to the deceased that reflects their personality with warmth and sensitivity and will lead the service on the day of the funeral.

Anstey Nomads

Article by Adam Etheridge Anstey Nomads recently unveiled their “Vision of the Future” with a launch at their clubhouse during the FA Cup Preliminary match at home to Worksop Town. The vision is based around three key areas, the club announced the plans for a major renovation of their Callingtons Community Complex ground alongside details of their acquisition of the Ratby Sports Ground.

The Ratby site will be transformed into a state-of-the-art training centre that will feature all-weather surfaces for their junior and senior teams. Already boasting more than twenty teams, the Nomads stated their intention to expand that roster and announced the appointment of, former Leicester City goalkeeper, Conrad Logan as their Director of Coaching.

Logan, who turned down an offer from a Football League club, has also committed to the Nomads first team, featuring between the sticks in all six of Anstey’s matches so far this season. The Cropston Road proposals will see a new clubhouse, featuring two function rooms and covered viewing balconies either side of a seated stand.

With aspirations to play at a much higher level, the Nomads have started the 2020/21 season in blistering fashion, winning five of their six matches so far. The season began with a 3-0 FA Cup win at home to Sleaford Town just four days before they began their league campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Holbeach United.

A first away match saw a 2-0 league victory away to Northampton O.N. Chenecks before suffering a 2-1 FA Cup defeat at the hands of higher league Worksop Town. The Nomads bounced back with a 3-0 win at home to Lutterworth Town to continue their 100% start in the league, before travelling to Hucknall Town where they defeated their hosts 2-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase.

Director of Coaching Former Leicester City goalkeeper, Conrad Logan has officially committed his future to Anstey Nomads, declining offers to return to the Football League, to engage in a new role at the Club.

As Director of Coaching, Conrad will be spending time with our Junior Teams to offer guidance to our Coaches. This is a vital role for the future, assisting our Coaches with their own development and feeding that benefit down to our Junior Members, helping them on their journey in football.

Conrad will also be tasked to add more teams, ensuring that we have boys and girls playing at every age group, feeding through in to adult football.

Nomads Training Centre Ratby Sports Club has recently been acquired with a plan to improve the sporting facilities across all age groups for Football. Existing grass pitches will be replaced with state of the art 4G, which will allow sport all year round, and will have a direct benefit to the Nomads. As well as new pitches a new sports pavilion is planned with modern changing and shower facilities, club room and spectators viewing areas as well as improved car parking.

The existing sports ground accommodates six grass football pitches, one full size senior pitch, two large mini’s and three small mini’s to accommodate a range of age groups. The proposal is to increase the total number of pitches to eleven, three grass pitches, and eight pitches of varying sizes spread over three 4G arenas.

Each 4G arena will be fenced and floodlit and will have the benefit of offering yearround football, and state of the art training facilities.

Reunification see two halves of the award winning line reconnected to create an eighteen mile heritage railway across Supported by the Friends of the Great Central Main Line the East Midlands. Five hundred metres of new railway needs to be built including bridges and embankments. Millions of pounds have already been raised and spent building one new bridge and completely refurbishing another ready for trains. The current appeal will pay for the next two stages which will be built together to reduce costs.

The Chairman of the Friends of the Great Central Main Line, Andy Fillingham said, “We’re obviously delighted to have reached another milestone in our fundraising. Donations continue to flow even though we are seven months into a pandemic. We receive contributions large and small and everything makes a difference and is humbling. It’s an amazing what have all achieved together and shows how people power is getting the two railways reconnected.”

Meanwhile a brand new sixty page colour book has been published which chronicles the story of the work carried out so far. It has been written by award winning journalist, broadcaster and ling term Great Central supporter Tom Ingall. With many previously unpublished photographs, its production has been sponsored by the Friends of the Great Central Main Line and every penny from sales will go to the appeal.

Top 5 things to consider when your loved one is coming home from hospital

aving a loved one admitted to hospital can be a very anxious and upsetting time, particularly during the current Coronavirus pandemic. The stress may be heighted by the fact that it might not be possible to visit your loved one in the hospital, and it can become frustrating waiting to hear when they will be discharged. One positive thing that you can however do is to the changes that you can make to their environment for when they return home that will make it a little easier and more comfortable.

Alan Ferguson from Candor Care and Sophia Dickinson from Home Independence Occupational Therapy, talk about the top 5 considerations when your loved one is coming home from hospital.

1. Adapting the home environment Look at your loved one’s home environment and consider their safety. Are there hazards such as clutter, loose cables or loose rugs or carpets in walkways?

Consider falls prevention tips to reduce the risk of falls. Would your loved one benefit from grab rails or specialist equipment to help them to get in and out of their bath or bed?

Can your loved one get up from the toilet without assistance? An Occupational Therapist can advise you about the most suitable home modifications for them.

Do they have suitable clothing to accommodate their physical needs?

Consider clothing that will be easy for them to put on and take off. Aim for them to be as comfortable as possible.

2. Considering their mobility Your loved one may have been seen by a Physiotherapist. If so, have they been given a walking aid such as walking sticks, crutches or a walking frame? Will the home environment accommodate the walking aid?

If they live in a house, do you need an additional walking aid on the second floor?

And if they have steps or stairs at home, have they practiced steps or stairs before returning home?

Will they need grab rails or additional stair rails to support them? Does your loved one need a wheelchair? Check this prior to your loved one returning home.

If the second floor is going to be a struggle for them, you may want to consider a stairlift as a rental or more permanent option. A stairlift can be installed to fit any shape or size of staircase, and can take the pressure off somebody trying to negotiate moving between the floors of their home, particularly if they have lost confidence or mobility after a major operation. It might also help to have an Occupational Therapy assessment to help to improve confidence.

3. Work on a reablement plan Reablement is the official title given to short-term care at home to aid recovery after discharge from hospital. Reablement can help your loved one to improve their skills and promote their independence.

Goals can be set as part of a reablement program including exercises to rebuild strength and increase movement. Clear, structured actions can help to empower your loved one to become more independent with everyday activities, such as getting in and out of the bath or cooking a meal.

4. Take precautions Has your loved one been advised about what they can and cannot do when they leave hospital?

What are the precautions and how long are they in place for? Does your loved one need to return for a follow-up review? If so, do you need to contact the hospital or will they contact you? Is there a reablement option to help your loved one regain their strength and ability?

Do they need to shield themselves due to Coronavirus? Check with the medical team prior to discharge and ensure that you have all of the information you need before departing.

5. Involve them in meaningful activities Participating in meaningful activities can have a positive impact on our wellbeing.

What are their favourite hobbies or leisure interests?

What do they enjoy doing? Is it possible for them to participate in their favourite hobby? Can you adapt their hobby to suit their physical ability?

Remember that the mind often needs stimulation too. Games, jigsaws, crosswords and puzzles can help keen the brain active and enhance well-being.

John Sutherington Sports Award In memory of Councillor John Sutherington, Anstey Parish Council awards a special annual grant of £250.00 to either an individual or organisation from Anstey, that has achieved a sporting success or carried out an outstanding sporting activity.

Remembrance Sunday 8th November 2020 Sadly, due to Covid-9 restrictions, this year’s Remembrance Day commemorations will be very different.

There will be NO parade or service at the War Memorial on Stadon Road, so we ask that people do NOT gather at 11am on Sunday 8th November.

Rather than visiting the War Memorial you may wish to put a poppy in your window as an act of solidarity and observe a 2 minutes silence at your front door with neighbours.

If you would like to place a Wooden Cross of Remembrance or a Poppy Wreath on behalf of your organisation, this can be done at the War Memorial at any time over the weekend of Remembrance Sunday.

The Royal British Legion will not be collecting money for poppies in their usual way this year. As the cases of coronavirus continue to rise, everyone in Charnwood has a role to play in tackling the pandemic. It is down to us all to help stop the spread of coronavirus, protecting our community and the NHS. Please follow the basic rules, wash your hands, stay apart, wear a face covering if you can and stick to the rule of six.

There are nine categories to enter plus the Harry Cook Award, which is awarded to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council has stated “The increase in the number of cases in Charnwood is very concerning and should serve as a stark reminder to everyone in the Borough that we cannot switch off and we all have a role to play in tackling the pandemic.”

Loughborough Local Testing Site.

There is a walk-through Covid-19 Local Testing Site in Limehurst Avenue, Loughborough.

“We have seen a spike in cases in Loughborough University which has happened at almost every university city and town across the country. If you took those cases out of the Charnwood figure, we would be at similar levels to other boroughs and districts in Leicestershire.”

“However we cannot ignore the fact that the number of cases has gone up across the Borough and Country, and that means everyone has a duty to take action to stop the spread.”

Planning Update.

I said I would keep you informed about the outcome of the planning application for 11 Windmill Rise, Woodhouse Eaves.

The application was determined by a Plans Committee at Charnwood Borough Council. I spoke at the meeting along with neighbours opposed to the proposal. I am pleased to report that the decision was to refuse permission. Among the reasons for refusal were: The immediate area is characterised by single storey dwellings of relatively uniform design and scale, many of which share common architectural features: It is considered that this would create an incongruous feature within the street scene at this prominent corner location that would be visually harmful.

May I take this opportunity to thank the residents who came forward to express their concerns and objections to the Plans Committee. In my view, it does make a difference when residents do take the opportunity to speak direct, giving detail how the proposal will affect them if permission is granted. Full details of the refusal can be found on Charnwood Borough Council’s website under planning application P/20/0829/2.

I have received information about a replacement dwelling at 1 Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves. Until I understand more fully this proposal, I have ‘called in’ this application to be determined by a Plans Committee. Full details can be viewed on Charnwood Borough Council’s website under planning application P/20/1543/2.

You may have by now heard about a pre-application for a reduced number of dwellings on the site adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves.

This is the same site that a previous application for up to 50 dwellings was refused by Charnwood Borough Council and an appeal dismissed by a Government Inspector.

I will keep residents informed if and when a planning application is submitted to the Council.

Charnwood Community Heroes.

Residents are being urged to enter nominations for Charnwood Community Heroes 2020.

The awards, run by Charnwood Borough Council are a chance to thank people, groups and organisations who have carried out a good deed, no matter how small or large, in their community.

It could be someone who has helped a neighbour, raised funds or is always there for others. It could be a group, organisation or business which has carried out some excellent work in the last 12 months. Whilst there isn’t a special Covid-19 category, the Council welcome nominations in each of the categories for those who have gone above and beyond during the pandemic.

Covid-19 has meant that the award presentation will be a virtual event this year, presented on the Charnwood Community Heroes and Council Facebook pages throughout the day on Saturday 12th December 2020.

Local Testing Sites are designed to supplement existing testing routes such as regional and mobile testing units. They are part of a national network being created by the government.

The concept behind a walk-through local test site is that it is aimed at those without a car who are unable to use a drive-through test site. The site offers walk-through appointments only. Appointments can be booked at nhs.uk/ coronavirus or by calling 119.

Please only book a test if you have one of the symptoms of Covid-19, such as a high temperature, a new continuous cough or loss of smell or taste. Users attending the site will be asked to self-swab. This location for the walk-through site was chosen by the NHS Test and Trace Service and Public Health.

Covid-19 Alert Tiers.

The government confirmed a new tier system which was implemented across England on the 12th October, replacing the existing restrictions.

At the time of writing, Charnwood Borough is currently at Level 1 (medium) which means the rule of six applies, and there is a 10pm curfew on hospitality establishments. I have received this information from Charnwood Borough Council. Residents of Charnwood are being asked to stay home on Remembrance Sunday this year and find other ways to honour those who served and sacrificed in the line of duty. In line with national government guidance on social distancing, most events across the country have been scaled back or cancelled.

On Sunday 8th November a small service attended by invitation only will be held at the Carillon Tower, Queens Park, Loughborough at 10.45am led by Reverend Wendy Dalrymple, Chaplain, Royal British Legion, Loughborough Branch.

Members of the public can watch the service live on Charnwood Borough Council’s Facebook page, photos from the service will be published across social media.

In past years, I have attended services at Anstey and Welbeck – The Defence Sixth Form College at Woodhouse. This year as Mayor of Charnwood I will attend the service at the Carillon. It is a great shame that we cannot come together to commemorate Remembrance Day this year. It is important that we give our thanks to all who have served and died for our country and honour those veterans and actively serving members of the Armed Services.

I hope that we will be able to come together next year on Remembrance Sunday and share a two minute silence for all our heroes.

A Little Hard To Stomach?

From heartburn to bloating, to constipation and stomach cramps, the symptoms of indigestion are varied, but each is a reminder that your digestive system is having trouble coping with the amount or type of food it is being asked to process.

Small changes not just to what you eat but also how you eat can make a huge difference.

Thinking twice about what you’re eating seems an obvious place to start.

Some foods are more problematic than others: red meat and fatty cuts of meat are hard to digest, so swap these for lean cuts of turkey, chicken or fish. Cheese, spicy foods, coffee, tea and alcohol are also common indigestion triggers and so should ideally be kept to a minimum. Instead try drinking some ginger tea with or before your meal to help stimulate digestion.

Chew your food. As obvious as it may sound, so many people do little more than close their teeth a couple of times around a mouthful of food before gulping it down. Chewing not only breaks your meal down into a manageable size, it gives the stomach time to produce the digestive enzymes it needs to break food down. For a helping hand with digestive enzymes a prebiotic supplement like Molkosan Fruit taken half an hour before each meal can help.

Hello everyone! COVID-19 has had a grip over the country and the world over the past couple of months. Chess has very much had to take a back seat. This looks set to continue as restrictions have recently been tightened once more.

Results Quite obviously there has not been any over the board (OTB ) chess played over the last few months. Etiquette of chess means that you sit close to your opponent and shake hands so the risk of passing on COVID-19 is quite high. The LMC (League Management Committee) met virtually towards the end of August to discuss options for an 'Attend if you'd like to chess meeting' but venues having restrictions (as they should), reduced that eventuality.

There is, however, a growing appetite for chess on the internet on chess.com and Lichess - both exceptionally good websites for getting one's chess fix. I am a member on both websites so please feel free to get in touch if the urge grabs you to register on these websites.

Anstey RFC Following The RFU Return To Community Rugby Roadmap Article by Chris Apperley

Much delayed Anstey RFC presentation night held at The Coach & Horses.

Usually voting takes place for various trophies appertaining to the season that had just been completed on the first Sunday in May. This is during the festivities of our annual President’s Day. Then at a dinner the following month it is the time for the worthy winners to be presented with an array of cups and shields.

But here in our 40th year everything is different.

The 2019/20 season finished abruptly on 21st March with Anstey Rugby at the top of our league which was later confirmed as the final result.

A Big celebration 40th dinner planned for 13th June (later moved to dates in November, now into Spring 2021) where presentations would be made.

Waiting that long after a season finished was ridiculous so voting was carried out via WhatsApp and an area was reserved in the Coach & Horses on 26th September for a reduced and restricted celebration evening.

Tables of Six, Players and Committee only, Masks on when not sitting down - very different, but the event went ahead.

Congratulations go to Jack Smith (Smig) for winning First Team Player of the Year, to Nathan Ratcliffe (Rats) for Young Player of the Year and Liam Curtis who was crowned Clubman of The Year again.

All well deserved winners.

It was too difficult to find an individual for ‘Most Improved’ so that was awarded to the whole team.

Back in the 2018/19 season we were struggling to put a team together most weeks, so moving on to winning the league in the 2019/20 was a fantastic achievement.

When we finally start the 2020/21 season there is success to come building on the strength of our squad.

Training is now partly moving to Saturdays as well as Wednesday evenings and we are still on Stage D of the Rugby Football Union’s Roadmap just leaving one letter to go until we are able to fully train for the forthcoming new season.

The new season for Premiership rugby is now imminent, so competitive rugby should filter down to our level not long after.

Something to note, the Rugby Pitch behind the the houses on Holgate Close and adjacent to Martin School is leased to Anstey RFC Ltd and is NOT a general playing or training field for other sports.

A 'Greyhound Summer' At LAA, Huncote Article by Jane Walters

It's been the Summer of Greyhounds for us here at Leicester & Leicestershire Animal Aid Association (LAA), Huncote. Greyhounds make fantastic pets, and although you may think they need lots of exercise, they love human company and are more than happy snuggled up with you on the sofa. It's been fantastic to see so many of them find their forever homes and leave the LAA Centre this year, to begin a new chapter in their lives.

'Percy' Two-year-old 'Percy', who came to us in July, still has his paws crossed for a new family to call his own.

Percy has an old leg injury from his racing days, so he is happy with just short 'potters' and a gentle amble around the park. He does love to play, especially with his squeaky toys and tennis balls and if you leave any food out it won't be there for long! Percy would love to dedicate his life to his new human(s), and would need to be the only pet in the home.

'He-Man' Five-year-old 'He-Man' is also waiting at our Huncote kennels for his forever home. He thinks he is a cross between Tigger and a Superhero!

He-Man will need help from his new owner(s) to settle into a home environment and he still gets a bit anxious when left alone.

He-Man could not be re-homed to a household with young children or small animals, as he is rather big and boisterous and very excited about life.
