Astro the Alien is the next step to help early readers build on previous skills; expanding vocabulary and learning more complex concepts. Educators’ resources include reading reinforcement activities, word list and Note to Caregivers.

These titles are retellings of classic Fairy Tales and Folklore stories in an easy format by Margaret Hillert. Illustrations provide lots of support in telling the story at a very low reading level. Pairing the Read and Discover Social Studies books with Dear Dragon titles focusing on the same concept allows you to incorporate “Twin Texts” to support the balance of reading nonfiction and fiction that is an integral goal of many national and state standards. Research cites that twin texts help encourage the enjoyment of reading while capitalizing on students’ fascination with facts. Educators can begin by reading the nonfiction book to build background, which helps support comprehension of the related fiction. Alternately, starting with the fiction, you can spark your child’s interest and expand his or her knowledge of the topic with the nonfiction text. Educators’ Resources are available on our website: www.norwoodhousepress.com

Praise for Being Kind to Animals "Animals are a major part of our lives, be they household companions, in a country corral, or scampering through a nearby wood. This entry in the Read and Discover Social Studies series (4 titles) provides a gentle guide to considerate behavior around all kinds of animals, domesticated and wild. The first section focuses on pets, giving tips on interaction and care. The next extends to behavior around animals in their natural habitats, suggesting that the best way to care for living things is to look after the planet. Back matter includes suggestions to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary, and a complete word list offers fledgling readers help with fluency." —Booklist

Praise for How Money Works “Talking about money can be difficult, even for adults, but it is essential if one is to become financially independent and economically savvy. Using simple language in short, labeled paragraphs, this series contextualizes the way money works in communities, households, and the world at large, demonstrating that monetary issues don’t exist in a vacuum. The authors delineate what countries, states, and cities spend money on, such as social programs, education, housing, and healthcare, and who is responsible for making broad financial decisions. The series also explains factors that affect families, such as budgets, credit, loans, insurance, taxes, rent, and much more, in an accessible way. Colorful, simply drawn graphics enhance the text, and helpful graphs and charts are employed to add perspective and illustrate more abstract concepts. VERDICT: A comprehensive start to getting students to think about money and become responsible spenders and savers.” — School Library Journal /Series Made Simple, November 2015

CRITICAL THINKING & SOCIAL ISSUES

America is not easy. It’s a land of high ideals and stirring icons, but it is also a land of harsh realities. We celebrate the incredible achievements of individuals as we turn our gaze from hunger and homelessness in the streets. We have a difficult time matching our words with our deeds. This is where poetry comes in. A poem has the ability to personalize the ideal, to make it tangible in a way that a speech or news report cannot. It can widen the angle through which we view society. It can move us to action. The poems in this anthology do just that: confront, challenge, and inspire. They take us on a journey toward social justice, starting in the shadows and slowly working our way home. Edited by Gail Bush and Randy Meyer. Foreword by COMMON. INDIVIDUAL BOOK: $14.60 (List) / $10.95 (School/Library) INTEREST LEVEL: Grades 7+

Great Debates is an information-packed series that stimulates critical thinking with tough questions. Each book in the series aligns with Language Arts Anchor Standards for Reading Informational Text and Speaking and Listening. Great Debates takes its name from the spirited discourse that surrounds each historical theme in the series. The narrative pauses at defining moments and “drops in” on influential Americans battling over two sides of a key issue. Readers learn how arguments are framed, and make eye-opening connections between great debates from the past and the ones that are taking place today. Text strengthens critical thinking skills with open-ended questions concerning social issues and history. Readers are invited to “find their own voice” and get involved if they find they have an interest in the issue.

Book Features: • Meets State Standards for Language Arts • Primary Sources Documents • Glossary, Index, Additional Resources INDIVIDUAL BOOK: $29.27 (List) / $21.95 (School/Library) Complete Set of 5 Books: $146.35 (List) / $109.75 (School/Library) INTEREST LEVEL: Grades 5–8

CRITICAL THINKING & SOCIAL ISSUES

Learn About the Issues. Evaluate the Opinions. Write About It.

The highly acclaimed Matters of Opinion series takes a look into important issues that young adults face. Each book features thoughtprovoking questions surrounding the issue and provides essays on both the pro and con point of view. As students learn more about the different sides of each issue, they can then start to formulate their own opinions on the topic. After each discussion, the reader is introduced to argumentative techniques that the authors used to present their viewpoints. The last chapter encourages the reader to write their own opinion piece and provides guidance for working through the steps of essay writing.

SHAPE YOUR OPINION The Shape Your Opinion series explores important issues that kids face. Each book provides three questions that examine both sides of an issue while building critical thinking and opinion writing skills. Each book contains writing prompts and places to go for more information. Now kids are ready to shape and write about their own opinion!

Book Features: • Aligns with Language Arts Anchor Standards for Reading Informational Text and Speaking and Listening • Teaches critical thinking skills • Common argumentative technique examples explained • Instructions on Essay Writing • Table of Contents, Timeline, Bibliography, Glossary, Index, Additional Resources
