TOP NEWS HIGHLIGHTS Norwich dedicates Mack Hall, a new academic building named for Robert B. ’64, H ’06, trustee emeritus and Tammie Mack. The $24 million facility includes a state-of-the-art cybersecurity War Room and a 400-seat auditorium and performing arts center.

“Citizens & Soldiers: The First 200 Years of Norwich University” written by New York Times bestselling author Alex Kershaw is released at Homecoming 2018.

Norwich breaks ground on the Bicentennial Stairs, a granite stairway that will mark the university’s 200th anniversary and honor 78 individuals who have made significant contributions to the university in the past century.

For the first time ever, a Norwich professor wins the William E. Colby Award. Steven E. Sodergren was recognized for his book, “The Army of the Potomac in the Overland & Petersburg Campaigns” (LSU Press, 2017). The award is in its 19th year.

The Peace and War Center holds its inaugural Peace and War Summit and launches the “Journal of Peace and War Studies.”

Norwich University Receives $3.5 million in NSF Grant for Cybersecurity Scholarships.

Norwich partners with Vemo Education to offer a new income share agreement aimed at improving affordability, student retention, and degree completion.

CGCS Professor Dennis Showalter wins 2018 Pritzker Military Museum and Library Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing.

2017-18 ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS Women’s Ice Hockey won its second NCAA Division III national championship and first since 2011 with a 2-1 victory over Elmira College at Kreitzberg Arena. The Cadets finished the season with a 27-1-3 record, the same record the men’s team won the national championship with the season prior. Seniors Sarah Schwenzfeier and Kim Tiberi, as well as sophomore Amanda Conway were named American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) East Region AllAmericans. Conway led the nation in scoring with 34 goals and 59 total points, setting new single-season school records in both categories.

Head coach Mark Bolding won his fourth AHCA National Coach of the Year award and was named the New England Division II-III Coach of the Year as well. Conway was named the New England Player of the Year.

Men’s Rugby capped an incredible two-year run by qualifying for the USA Rugby Division II National Tournament in both 15s and 7s for the second straight season. The Cadets swept the Rugby Northeast 15s and 7s titles, never losing a match to any conference opponent. NU went 13-1 in the fall 15s season, finishing in third place in the country with a 40-24 victory over North Dakota State at Furman University in South Carolina. NU’s only 15s loss came in a double-overtime 41-36 thriller to VMI in the national semifinals.

The Cadets also went 17-6 in 7s matches in the spring, qualifying for the USA Rugby Collegiate 7s National Championships in Glendale, Colo. for the second year in a row. Norwich won its pool with a perfect 3-0 record, but then lost twice on Day 2 to finish 3-2 and tied for seventh out of 12 teams.

The cross country programs completed the sweep of the GNAC team championships for the second straight year. The men claimed their third straight title and GNAC-record 10th overall, while the women won their third title in the last four years. Junior Brody Hale won the individual title and earned GNAC Runner of the Year honors. Sophomores Adam Saucier, Jack McNally and Ryan English, as well as freshman Trenton Shimata and senior Connor Lafontaine all earned GNAC First Team AllConference honors for placing in the top seven. Shimata earned GNAC Rookie of the Year honors as the fastest freshman, marking the third straight year a NU male runner won the award.

On the women’s side, senior Haddie Lary won the race and earned GNAC Runner of the Year honors.

Sophomore Robyn Hageman finished in sixth place to earn GNAC All-Conference honors for the second time in her career.
