GISELLE

The Russian State Ballet of Siberia The Orchestra of the Russian State Ballet Thursday 18 – Saturday 20 February The acclaimed ballet company return to Norwich following their sell-out season earlier this year Giselle, Thursday 18 February at 7.30pm The most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score. The Snow Maiden, Friday 19 February at 2.30pm & 7.30pm Based on a traditional folk-tale, set in the snow covered landscape of rural Russia, this seasonal sparkler follows the Snow Maiden as she dances into the human world. Captivated by the colourful village and the people who live there, she ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. When finally she surrenders herself completely and warms to love, her heart melts in a tragic embrace. This is a brand new production, seen in Norwich for the first time. The Nutcracker, Saturday 20 February at 2.30pm & 7.30pm This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins... Friday 8 - Saturday 9 April English National Ballet and English National Ballet School present My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty, an enchanting version of the fairy tale ballet created especially for children aged three upwards. As a baby, Princess Aurora is cursed by the evil Carabosse: on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. Her godmother the Lilac Fairy alters the spell so Aurora will not die but will sleep for 100 years, only to be awoken by true love’s kiss. From Aurora’s christening in the grand hall of the palace, to her jubilant wedding celebrations, the popular fairy tale comes alive on stage. With a narrator to help the young audience follow the story, and a shortened version of Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous music, this is the perfect introduction to the beauty of ballet, and a fantastic family day out. This unique collaboration between English National Ballet and English National Ballet schools is created by English National Ballet’s Associate Artist George Williamson and performed by second year students from English National Ballet School. Since its creation in 2012, 150,000 people have enjoyed our My First Ballet series.

Presented in partnership with

Saturday 14 - Sunday 15 May When The James Plays premiered in Autumn 2014, the critical and public impact was extraordinary. Described by The Telegraph as ‘better than Shakespeare’ and ‘Rona Munro's thrilling trilogy could be the finest history plays ever penned’ The James Plays sold out their run at the Edinburgh International Festival and the National Theatre in London. Now returning for a high-profile UK and international tour, these plays represent theatre-making at its very best. Please note the trilogy is only available to book as a complete whole.

By Rona Munro Directed by Laurie Sansom Exhilarating and vividly imagined, The James Plays bring to life three generations of Stewart kings who ruled Scotland from 1406 - 1488.

HHHHH Time Out

JAMES I: THE KEY WILL KEEP THE LOCK

JAMES II: THE DAY OF THE INNOCENTS

JAMES III: THE TRUE MIRROR

Prisoner of England for 18 years, James is delivered back to his homeland, with an English bride, to reign as James I of Scotland. Returning to a troubled nation, he faces terrible choices if he is to save himself, his Queen and the crown.

Crowned King at aged six, James II is a puppet in a vicious game between Scotland’s most powerful families. As he approaches adulthood, James must fight for his crown whilst the nightmares of his childhood torment him.

Charismatic, cultured, and obsessed with grand gestures, James III is loved and loathed by his nation. Scotland’s future may lie with his resourceful and resilient wife, Margaret of Denmark. Can she rescue a struggling nation?

Onstage seating Why not place yourself at the heart of the action by booking an onstage seat? Built into the set in the style of choirstalls, there are just 40 of these unreserved seats available. Facing out to the auditorium, they form a people’s parliament overlooking the courts of James I, II and III and so, unusually, you will share the performer’s perspective. Only available to book by phone or in person. These seats are £24 per trilogy.

Please note these performances contain strong language, flashing and strobe lighting, violent scenes, nudity and are not suitable for children. Recommended age 14+. MAX RICHTER ENSEMBLE

One of the UK’s biggest arts festivals, 2016 brings 17 days of international theatre, art, music, literature and free outdoor performances. We’re proud to host a series of extraordinary performances on the Theatre Royal stage bringing together artists from around the world in a celebration of life-enhancing passion and power. www.nnfestival.org.uk

Hailed as the most influential composer of his generation, British electro-acoustic artist Max Richter is inspired equally by Bach, punk rock and ambient electronica. Richter’s sonic world blends a formal classical training with modern technology, with work including scores for the award-winning films Waltz with Bashir and Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island.

Tuesday 17 – Wednesday 18 May, Eves 7.30pm

Max Richter Richter and his ensemble will perform selections from SLEEP, his landmark work scored for piano, strings, electronics and voice, which was broadcast as part of BBC Radio 3’s Why Music?. Described by Richter as his ‘personal lullaby for a frenetic world,’ don’t miss an astounding night from this leading contemporary classical artist.

Aurélien Bory

SANS OBJET In the 1970s it made cars. Now transplanted from assembly line to stage, an industrial robot stars with acrobats Olivier Alenda and Olivier Boyer in a spectacular dance between man and machine. By turns friendly and frightening, the robot is the unlikely hero of a remarkable futurist fantasy.

“Overwhelming emotional power”

“Once again Aurélien Bory comes up with magic, wit and a ton of ideas. A contemporary take on Chaplin’s Modern Times”

THE NIMMO TWINS NORMAL FOR NORFOLK 20th ANNIVERSARY SHOW

THE COUNTRY MEMBERS

16+

Wednesday 10 – Saturday 13 August

After 2014’s triumph at the Theatre Royal, The Nimmo Twins return with their 20th anniversary show. Starting in 1996, Normal for Norfolk is now as much a feature of East Anglian life as fearing dual carriageways and waving at buses.

book, music and lyrics by DAVID LAMBERT

Join Owen Evans, Karl Minns and the lovely Nigel on lights and sound, for a brand new show of rural ribaldry and agricultural arseing about. Expect songs, monologues and sketches on NCFC, academies, Go Go Dragons and the difficulties of staging a bicycle race in Norfolk. All your favourite characters including The Council, She Go, Anne and Billy Boy will be present and correct for a sideways look at life in Nelson’s County.

Wednesday 3 - Saturday 6 August Lily’s been Swallow Falls High School Prom Queen three years running (mainly by cheating!) and she’s determined this year will be no different. But it looks like there could be plenty to get in her way: a new pretty girl in school who’s sweeter than cotton-candy; an English exchange-student (who might be a lord); not to mention the feral Elementary kids next door who are on the warpath. And Principal Butters doesn’t even want a Prom! Lily’s going to have to try every trick in the book to get the crown this year. A hilarious new musical comedy for all the family, from the writer of Sinbad and the Pirate Curse, Peter Pan – Return to Neverland and The Wind in the Willows. Over next summer we’ll settle into it with a mixture of existing activity and some new programmes, to make sure that it’s ready for the start of the autumn school term. We aim to offer engagement with the performing arts to every school child in Norfolk as a natural part of their curriculum. Next September will be the start of a thirty-year programme We’ve set ourselves that long horizon because we’re serious about doing our bit to help break the cycle of low ambition and achievement that has bedevilled Norfolk for too long. Politicians rarely have the luxury of being able to plan so far ahead within the electoral cycle. The Theatre Royal’s underlying financially stability means that we can commit ourselves to a vision in which the young people that we engage with today become parents who will pass on to their children the wonder, the inspiration, the collaborative excitement and awakening, that arrive with the performing arts. The Trustees of the Theatre Royal have committed a large proportion of our reserves to ensuring that STAGE TWO opens on time and in good order. And many national and local trusts, and some individuals, have already been incredibly generous. But we will need help to get over the finishing line, so in conjunction with the publication of this brochure we are launching a public appeal for assistance with funding - see page 32 for more information. We’ll be making bucket collections, diverting part of our revenue and ticketing income, running events and fundraising activities, so we’re confident that within five years we will have covered the costs of building STAGE TWO. You can play a part.

56

If you value the performing arts - if you want the children of Norfolk to experience the greatness of spirit that comes with them - if you’d like to be part of a generational project to transform the cultural landscape – than please help, on whatever level is good for you. In the meantime, have a look at THE JAMES PLAYS next May. They were the hit of the 2014 Edinburgh Festival, co-produced by the National Theatre, the Edinburgh International Festival and the National Theatre of Scotland. Bold, sweeping, epic and personal, they tell the story of a little-known segment of Scottish history. In partnership with the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, we’re proud to be associated with this extremely limited UK tour before they go off on a worldwide jaunt, never to return. That weekend in May promises rare excitement. As ever, please let me know if there’s anything you’d like to praise or question about our policies or our actions. I look forward to hearing from you. Education

Education “The education department provide a first class service with the staff, children and parents recognised and valued.” Teacher As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre Royal regards education as central to its function, as shown by our charitable objects: “To promote, maintain, improve and advance education, particularly by the production of educational plays and the encouragement of the arts, including the arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and music and to formulate, prepare and establish schemes therefore.” These pages give an indication of the range and scale of that education work.

“This project has made a seemingly inaccessible art form a source of enjoyment and inspiration for the children. THANK YOU!” Teacher THE NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT Now in its 17th year this biannual project aims to break down the barriers associated with the arts and theatre in general and opera and dance in particular. Free music workshops are offered to both teachers with music skills and to non-music specialists. Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in terms of Listening, Composing and Appraising, workshops are followed by a programme of activity involving residential work in schools with professional musicians which leads to a performance on stage at Theatre Royal.

THEATRE ACCESS PROJECT We’ve produced a film ‘How to behave at the theatre’ as part of the ongoing Theatre Access Project (T.A.P), a partnership between Norwich Theatre Royal and Norse Group. The project has been developed to encourage primary schools who do not normally visit the theatre to see a production and take advantage of the accompanying educational opportunities. The film acts as a guide for teachers to show schoolchildren what a trip to Norwich Theatre Royal will be like and how to behave whilst there. Please contact us if you would like to receive a copy of the DVD. Alternatively, you can view/download the 6 minute film, directly from our website.

“I found it inspiring and hope that you are involved in future school activities” Pupil BACKSTAGE TOURS Offered to schools and other community groups to explore the technical side of theatre and can be tailored to suit your needs. A tour can also be followed by a talk about other areas of the theatre’s operation, such as its history, marketing, customer care and careers.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Career talks and advice for individual students of Theatre Studies, Performing Arts, Education Studies, from GCSE to postgraduate level, who wish to complement their studies with professional support.

Organised activities in conjunction with visiting companies, such as Matthew Bourne, Northern Ballet, National Theatre, Globe Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Rambert and Richard Alston Dance Company. Resource packs for teachers, Page to Stage events, exhibitions, pre/post show discussions and company meet and greets are among the activities widely available to visiting groups and often open to individual patrons too.

WORK EXPERIENCE Week-long placements can be arranged for students with an active interest in theatre. We recommend that you allow a minimum of 8 weeks for your application, prior to your chosen date. Details of how to apply can be found on the education pages of the theatre website. To date, over 950 young people have participated in week long work experience placements at Norwich Theatre Royal, both in our Front of House and Backstage/Technical departments.

“Their obvious joy and deep involvement brought tears to our eyes” Retired teacher

WORKSHOPS and RESIDENCIES Offered to schools and other community groups to explore the practical side of theatre and can be tailored to suit your needs. A workshop can take place in-school, in a hired studio or sometimes on stage.

“It was an experience that will stay with them forever” Teacher For more information, please visit our website: www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk, see our Education Newsletter or sign up to our education mailing list by contacting Jason Raper, Education Manager, on (01603) 598523 or email j.raper@theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk.
