notes from flo

Good afternoon and welcome to Carrow Road for this afternoon’s fixture against Cambridge United.

This is our third game in seven days and the second time we have faced Cambridge United in two weeks. It is also our first Carrow Road fixture since Martin Herdman was appointed head coach. His impact on the squad has been impressive. It can often take time for players to adjust and adapt to a new head coach and their philosophy, but Martin has made an excellent start.

Back in April 2023 we welcomed 7,500 fans to Carrow

Road, a landmark for our women’s team. That event has given us a fantastic springboard to host two fixtures at Carrow Road this season. We’re on a journey, and games at Carrow Road are crucial for our growth strategy as we aim to build a sustainable future.

For my final few words, I would like to express my thanks to those who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes at the football club contributing towards this afternoon’s event. Often their hard work goes unnoticed, but I would like to give special thanks and recognition to Alex Beadnell, Elliot King, Eleanor Watson and Sian Miles for their hard work.

Enjoy the game. OTBC.

coach’s comment

We caught up with Martin Herdman ahead of today’s FAWNL fixture against Cambridge United to discuss a busy week of preparation and his first match in the dugout at Carrow Road.

Another great result on Tuesday night. What did you make of our performance against Cambridge City?

After such a short turn around, it was great to see the players respond so positively with a great win against Cambridge. We were disappointed to drop points on Sunday against London Seaward and we were determined to go and take the game to them, and that we did.

You must be very pleased with the start we’ve had as a squad, having only dropped points once and progressing through the league cup?

Yes, it has been a good start but still some work to be done. The squad has taken on new information well and are showing good signs of improving and growing together. We need to keep our feet firmly on the ground as this is a very strong league and just

keep focusing on one game at a time and gathering positive momentum.

We had a very tight turnaround to prepare for today’s fixture. Did anything change in terms of training and preparation for the game?

We only had one training session which isn’t ideal, but we have tried to prepare in advance. We almost grouped these three games together and worked backwards from Cambridge United in terms of selection, tactical, and physical management. In these tight turn arounds, it’s more about managing minutes and the staff team being cognisant of the demands of each game. We hope that the preparation on and off the field with the players will help us to hit the ground running at Carrow Road.

How are you feeling ahead of Sunday in general,

6 CO a CH’ s CO mment

with it being your first match at Carrow Road since being in charge?

From a personal level it is going to be a magical moment and I’m excited to stand in the dugout and lead this fantastic group of players. My young son Hayden (nearly three) is coming along with my wife and family and friends. Although Hayden only really cares about his toy dinosaurs now, it’s amazing to know that he will be there with his Norwich shirt on. I’m also backed by a great staff team, and I know they will all be equally proud to be in the dugout.

What have you said to the squad in the buildup to this game, to keep nerves and excitement under control?

The good thing for us is that a lot of these players have experienced it before and some twice. These experiences are key and will really help them in

those tough and good moments in the game as they recall from past. We have some techniques we use to keep the players focused and the key for me, is to just go and enjoy it and embrace the occasion. We have used the word “brave” a lot this season, I believe they will show great bravery in the game.

We’ve got a fantastic number of fans attending Carrow Road – what did you make of those who attended your first Nest fixture last Sunday?

Yes, the fans are amazing, we mention them a lot in our meetings and the players are truly appreciative of them and their support. We had over 300 at The Nest last week, so I’m really hoping for a bumper crowd here today, in what will be a very warm and sunny day. I hope some of these fans that are at the game today can make it to The Nest and help us make it a fortress this season.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 THE NEW CROFT

Another Natasha Snelling brace accompanied by an own goal and a Megan Todd penalty secured a comfortable 4-0 victory as Norwich travelled to Cambridge City.

Norwich arrived at The New Croft on Tuesday evening looking to right the wrongs of Sunday’s draw with London Seaward and this was evident from the off.

The Canaries started the game in high spirits and energy, finding Snelling, Rachel Lawrence, Todd and Kathryn Stanley in dangerous areas with urgency.

Despite a handful of Norwich chances knocking on the Cambridge door in the opening stages, it was a Lilywhite foot that gave Norwich the lead after an Alice Parker cross was turned in for an own goal in the 10th minute.

Attacking bombardment proceeded with Stanley and Todd both testing the palms of Nina Meollo, but the Cambridge keeper was equal to them.

In the 25th minute, Cambridge responded, forcing the concession of a free-kick in a dangerous area. Sarah Quantrill got down brilliantly to deny the subsequent effort, with Mary Croft swiping the ball to safety.

Norwich sensed the danger and immediately began to manifest some more opportunities of their own. Lawrence continued to torment the left of the Cambridge defence and saw one of her many threatening crosses turned in by Snelling to double Norwich’s advantage just shy of 30 minutes.

The interval was approaching but Norwich weren’t done. Ellie Smith joined the attacking ensemble, making her usual weaving and darting runs, whilst Stanley and Todd continued to test Meollo.

Once again, it was Snelling who would deliver a hammer blow on the stroke of half-time. First, Stanley cut inside off the left wing to let fly, stinging the palms of Meollo, who spilt it into the path of a grateful Snelling to secure a 3-0 lead at the break.

Coming out for the second half Cambridge City knew they had to respond quickly, and that they did. Route one proved fruitful as Ceri Flye was forced to make a challenge inside the penalty area under a minute into the restart. Tilly Fidler confidently stood over it but turned in anguish as her spot-kick was blazed over the bar.

This inevitably knocked the wind out of Cambridge sails and settled the tempo of the game.

Ten minutes later, the hosts would return the favour, bringing down a goal-bound Stanley as she looked certain to score. It was no surprise to see Todd step up to the plate and even less of a surprise as she dispatched it for Norwich’s fourth.

Substitutes rolled on for both sides, but little changed. Norwich continued to dominate much of the ball in the latter stages of the game, with the occasional breakthrough chance that could have produced another goal or two.

Cambridge rued a late chance of their own, rattling the post with 10 to play, but the game would play out at the pace set by Norwich until the referee’s whistle.

Norwich City Women: Quantrill, Parker, Flye (Strauss 77), Todd (Tomlinson 67), Smith, Snelling (Shaw 60), Larkins (Hailes 67), Stanley, Knights (Daviss 67), Lawrence, Croft.

Goals: OG (10), Snelling (28,45), Todd (58)

Bookings: Hailes (88)

Cambridge City: Meollo, A Jackson, Mulvihill, Ndlovu, Hubbard, Price, Wodhams, Gardiner, C Jackson, Fidler, Stephenson.

How have you enjoyed pre-season and the start of the 2023/24 campaign so far?

It’s been a really strong pre-season, with the additions of a few new players and retaining previous ones, everyone has worked hard and there is a really strong sense of belief in the team this year.

You missed the last two games through illness but you’ve been working hard already since the end of last season. Would you say fitness and training has really ramped up since then and how does a player recover after time out of the squad?

The fitness levels and attention put on them have been really improved this year and with bringing in Will (the new fitness coach), we have had training plans over the summer and guidance to help improve our fitness. Whilst I have missed games due to injury and illness, during my return I have been able to ease myself back from doing off-pitch

fitness sessions to training and then games, which has allowed me to build up strength and meant I can be match fit when I return.

With seven great new additions, we have such a big squad now, so would you say it’s nice and competitive within the camp now?

Definitely! I think the introduction of new players has allowed so much positive competition within the squad for, not only the starting 11, but also the matchday squad too.

Martin has been here a couple of months now and started to instate his tactics and playing style into the squad. What has it been like having him as head coach?

Bringing Martin in has been so exciting; he’s introduced a high press, energetic style which we have all taken to and we are all learning more of his philosophy each session.

Eloise Morran joined the first team in December 2022, having graduated from the Player Pathway system as the first person to make the progression at age 16.

This is your second year in the squad now. How important was it for you to develop as a person and a player in your first year and what did you learn from this group of girls?

The first year playing here really allowed me to develop physically and get used to the demand of women’s football. This meant I could prepare so much more for this season mentally and physically and meant I had more belief in myself as I felt more comfortable in the environment.

Can you tell us a little bit more about the player pathway system here at Norwich City and how that helped you break into the first team?

I first joined the programme when I was 14 and it gave me my first insight into playing against better quality teams and having better players around me. It also bridged the gap to women’s football so well, as there are so many opportunities to progress when you are in the pathway.

This won’t be your first time playing at

Carrow Road now, having won here against Ashford Town and in the County Cup final. Would you say the group still feels excitement about playing on the big stage?

Oh 100%, whilst we are trying to stay professional and remember we are looking for the three points. These kinds of games are ones you dream of and they are always an exciting experience.

Last year at Carrow Road, you were voted as player of the match. What was that like for you on a personal level?

It was so nice, it makes you feel like all those hard training sessions and hours are worth it and I was just lucky that I went out and played one of my best games there.

What are your aims for the 2023/24 season with the team?

I think our main aim is progression after bringing in a new manager and adopting his style. All we want to do collectively is improve and potentially look for a good cup run and promotion from the league.

A brace from Natasha Snelling helped the Canaries to a 2-2 draw at home to London Seaward in an FAWNL Division One South East fixture.

In much the same style to last season’s closelycontested draw at The Nest against the Blues, Norwich thought they might have had the winner through Snelling, but it took just a minute for the visitors to get their equaliser and hold onto a draw.

Ten minutes into the match and neither side could break through to force any kind of press.

It was Megan Todd who had the first convincing chance, after Freya Symonds made a drive through the middle and laid the number seven off for a shot on the right-hand side of the box, but her effort was palmed away by Tia Ginn for a Norwich throw.

City continued to hold possession early on but couldn’t get too far into the visitors’ half.

Seaward created their first real threat through a header from Katherine Long, but she couldn’t direct her effort on target.

Todd then took matters into her own hands with an effort from long range inside half an hour, that was just

high of the target, followed by a close-range attempt from Symonds that was smothered away for a corner.

Snelling hit the side netting on 28 minutes but at the second time of asking, she bundled a closerange effort into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to the Yellows.

Sam Lanza had the chance to equalise twice within a few minutes as her first effort was too weak to beat Sarah Quantrill between the sticks and her second was skied over the crossbar.

The Seaward number 10 then had a third effort roll just wide of the City post following a free kick 30 yards out.

Quantrill was called into action for the first time as she parried a shot from Long away for a corner. The resulting set-piece amounted to a goal-kick and the danger cleared.

Into the second half and Shannon Shaw immediately had the ball in the back of the net but her effort was flagged for offside.

Despite pressing efforts from Norwich, Seaward found an equaliser through Long after 55 minutes.

SUNDAY,

After a host of changes from Martin Herdman, against the run of play, the Canaries had the chance to go ahead again as Rachel Lawrence had the chance to tap in from close-range but couldn’t find the target. The ball then fell to Snelling on the edge of the box who smashed an effort into the top corner for her, and Norwich’s, second.

The lead lasted no longer than a minute as Seaward’s Megan Burrows took the first chance she had to go for goal and her shot met the top corner of the net.

Snelling was so close to a hattrick in the final minute of normal time but she was denied superbly by Ginn to keep the score at 2-2.

In the dying seconds of the game, Todd laid substitute Ellie Smith up inside the box but the angle was too awkward and she couldn’t find the target.

This afternoon we welcome Cambridge United to Carrow Road in our second meeting of the 2023/24 season.

The U’s have had a bright start to their league campaign, remaining unbeaten with a win against Haywards Heath Town (4-0) and a draw against newly promoted side AFC Sudbury (2-2).

Sarah Wiltshire is the club’s top scorer, having found the back of the net for all four of United’s goals against Haywards Heath.

Bella Simmons and Zoe Wood have also etched their names onto Cambridge’s goalscoring list, with goals to claim a draw against AFC Sudbury.

Today’s two sides have already had

one encounter this season, when the Canaries travelled to St Neots Town for the determining round of the FAWNL league cup.

It was an off-colour day for Darren Marjoram’s side, as the Canaries ran out 5-0 winners away from home, with a goal from Jodie Drake and braces from Shannon Shaw and Natasha Snelling.

Despite a disappointing result for the East Anglian hosts, Wood was voted as City’s Opposition Player of the Match.

Norwich have faced United 16 times since 2014, the Canaries winning eight of these games, whilst the Cambridge have won seven and there has been one draw between the two sides.

We caught up with Cambridge United manager Darren Marjoram ahead of this afternoon’s Carrow Road clash, who is going into his third season in charge of the U’s.

Firstly, can you tell me a little bit about your background in coaching and how you have worked your way to Cambridge United?

I started coaching girls football 12 years ago as my daughter wanted to play in a girls only team, but there wasn’t one locally. So, we set up a team and I started coaching them. From there, I got involved in coaching for St Ivo School girls teams and during that time we won five National Schools Championships and became British Isles Champions on one occasion. I also became a coach at Cambridgeshire FA ACC and took on the role of manager at St Ives Town Ladies, where we got promoted from the bottom county league to Tier 5 in six seasons. That was when Cambridge United approached me to become manager.

What has been a career highlight with Cambridge United for you?

Probably the County Cup win last season over Cambridge City at the Abbey Stadium.

We’re only just getting started in the 2023/24 season, how would you assess your squad’s performance this campaign so far?

We’ve got a squad that we have strengthened this season, and our start in the league has been good with one win and a draw that showed our resilience, after being 2-0 down. The cup game against Norwich City was a tough opening fixture where we learned a lot about the team and players. We have quite a few players still recovering from injury so it’s hard to make too many assessments at this stage, but we’re happy enough with the start we’ve made in the league.

What did you make of the cup tie between these two sides the first time we met this season?

Norwich City were excellent, and as much as we put in a poor performance, you have to give credit to Norwich for the way they played. I was very impressed and can see them being challengers for the league title, for sure.

How momentous does playing at Carrow Road make this match for your side, regardless of the result?

It’s fantastic for everyone involved, but also a great sign of the backing clubs are giving their women’s teams. We are honoured to have the opportunity to play at Carrow Road and hopefully we can play our part in a memorable game.

symonds wins august Player of the month

Congratulations to Freya Symonds, who has been voted for by fans as Norwich City Women’s Player of the Month.

The midfielder helped to kick-start the excitement to the women's team's season, opening her 2023/24 account with the last-minute winner against newlypromoted AFC Sudbury.

The all-important free kick was also nominated for Norwich City's Goal of the Month for August.

On winning the award, Symonds said: "Thank you to everyone who voted for me. The support for the team has been unreal and we couldn't have asked for more."

We asked the team to look back at some of the highlights from last season’s 5-3 win at Carrow Road over Ashford Town, including all the goals and Bryony’s penalty save.

“The first goal I actually thought Tash got a touch, so I was just buzzing it was in the back of the net. But honestly, I couldn’t believe it, to score at Carrow Road twice was the best thing, really a dream come true.

The free kick… well I don’t really know how that happened. It’s a goal I’ll never forget!

I think I just felt relief, just to get the ball in the back of the net early doors. I just want the team to win every game, and I was just over the moon that I could help that!

I will admit, I hadn’t intended to score and I was just crossing it! I said I don’t mind who scores it, as long as it’s in. Although I love scoring, I was just happy it was a goal.

For both goals, I can’t explain the emotion. The day in itself was incredible and that made it so memorable for me.

I play for the club that I’ve supported and loved since I was tiny, so to score at this stadium where I grew up idolising the men’s players, to then score twice, it’s hard to put into words how much it meant to me.”

“I would like to think I was saying to myself ‘we are in the attacking third, how can I angle my run to lose my defender and get a shot off’ in the build-up, but what I was probably thinking was ‘don’t miss, don’t miss, don’t miss!’

After scoring, I thought I’d just completed my Norwich City career! No but in all honestly it was the best feel ever.

Running over to celebrate with my family and the fans, it was a mix of emotions if I’m honest. I’ve been playing for this team for 10 years, it was my first time playing at Carrow Road and I’ve just put the ball in the back of the net in front of seven and a half thousand people, how can I even put that into words.”

28 C arr OW r O ad rev I e W

freya symonds

“I think the only thing for me was I knew where Anna [Larkins] was going to cross the ball, so it was important that I was in the right place to tap the ball in.

It honestly felt so surreal afterwards, it felt like all my life playing football for Norwich had lead up to that moment.

It was just so incredible and made me want to work harder and do it all over again.”

29 C arr OW r O ad rev I e W

megan todd

“I remember towards the end of the game I was struggling; I’d been out for a few weeks before the game with COVID and I wasn’t match fit at all. I saw Smithy with the ball and saw this space and thought ‘I am going to have to run here’. I picked up the ball and I remember hearing the crowd get louder and I thought ‘I’ve got to drive here’. I remember getting closer to the goal and I was running out of space, as their defender was coming, so I thought ‘just hit it’ and ended up hitting the back of the net!

It was an unreal feeling, just a massive relief. I had goosebumps straight away and tried to just process what happened. I had already thought of a celebration in my head if I did score. If people still are unsure, what it was, it was Thierry Henry’s celebration!

It has to be up there with one of my best goals, so I give myself a 9 (10 if I had stayed on my feet!)

I watch the video back a lot, the noise of the crowd is amazing! One of my best ever football moments I would have to say.”

“There was so much going through my mind trying to keep calm and decide what way to go. It was the most unreal feeling when I saved it; I had goosebumps, especially from the noise of the crowd after I saved it!

After I saved it, I told the girls to concentrate as the ball was still in play and

didn’t fancy conceding after going through all that due to not concentrating!

I would give it a 10/10 save as don’t think I could have done better, especially at such an important part of the game and on a special occasion. I would love to do that again and I just want to thank all of you fans for the support.”
