@NorwichPubFestival

Welcome to Norwich Pub Festival! Join us in the pub this July! A month-long celebration bringing together 100 local pubs and breweries. Brought to you by Norwich & District CAMRA, this is a true celebration of our amazing pubs. Whether you prefer beer, cider, wine, spirits or alcohol free drinks, this is the festival for you! Pubs are such a big part of our culture that it’s hard to imagine them not being there. From a meal out with the family, to a quick drink after work, to an afternoon spent in a sunny beer garden, we visit pubs for many reasons. And we’ve all been missing them terribly. After more than a year of closures and restrictions, landlords and their teams are keen to return to normality and welcome customers back. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to support our amazing local pubs by exploring our seven zones during the month of July. Featuring 62 pubs in and around Norwich you’ll be spoilt for choice. Each pub is partnered with a brewery and receives a free cask of beer from them. There’s 40 breweries and 1 cider maker taking part and we want to say a huge thank you to them all for their support. You can find out more about the breweries on pages 27 to 34.

How does it work?

1

Pubs are grouped in 7 colour-coded zones, mapped out on pages 4 to 19, and you have the whole month to visit as many as you choose.

2

Buy whatever you choose at the pub (it doesn’t need to be beer) then ask them to stamp the relevant box on page 38.

3

If you collect a stamp from every pub in a zone, you can claim a souvenir coloured wristband from the ‘prize pub’ for that zone (see zone map pages for details).

4

Collect a stamp from every pub and you’ll qualify for a special prize to be awarded at Norwich Beer Festival in October.

Don't fancy completing an entire zone? Then why not design your own! If you collect a stamp from one pub in each of the 7 zones, you can enter a prize draw. More details on page 37.

Getting around Almost all the pubs taking part are on train or bus routes, and you can find public transport details on each zone map. In Norwich, the central zones are walkable, and the pubs are very close to each other. If you need to drive or cycle, please keep everyone safe and have a soft drink, you’ll still get your stamp! Many of the pubs and breweries have chosen to work together to organise some exciting events for customers during the festival. You can find out what events are happening, as well as up-to-date opening hours, on each pub's social media pages which we’ve listed on the zone maps.

You can find an online version of this guide at norwichcamra.org.uk and on our social media pages, just search for @NorwichPubFestival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Get to know...

Norwich & District CAMRA The Norwich & District branch, which organises Norwich Pub Festival, is one of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA)’s largest and most exciting branches! We organise lots of regular social events and also one of CAMRA’s biggest and most successful beer festivals, which has been running since the 1970s. The branch covers the city of Norwich and the surrounding area, and works with the other Norfolk branches: West Norfolk (Kings Lynn, Swaffham and Thetford areas), East Norfolk (Yarmouth and the eastern Broads) and Mid Anglia (southern Norfolk around Diss).

20

Campaigning CAMRA is a consumer organisation whose primary focus is on supporting the production and sale of real ale (live beer which is naturally carbonated by the yeast acting on the sugars remaining in the beer, after the primary fermentation in the brewery) and real cider & perry. As real ale is primarily a draught beer, CAMRA also supports pubs, as the best place to drink real ale. Campaigning to support real ale, cider & perry, and save pubs and breweries isn't as visible as perhaps it used to be, with demos and placards. These days it mostly involves members signing petitions, email and social media campaigns, and direct contact with politicians and industry bodies. At a local level we monitor planning applications, and oppose those where we believe pubs will be lost unnecessarily. This is increasingly likely as property companies take advantage of the COVID crisis to convert pubs to more profitable residential or retail use. Once converted, those pubs will be lost forever, as it's very difficult to convert back the other way! More detail on all CAMRA activities can be found at camra.org.uk

Social Events We hope to restart our regular social events very soon, including the famous First Friday Five,

visiting five pubs in Norwich, starting at 8pm on the first Friday of every month. Our regular Lunchtime Strolls are relaxed afternoon crawls around five Norwich pubs, starting at 12 noon on a weekday, usually in the middle of each month. And our evening and lunchtime coach trips, visiting four or five rural pubs, leave Castle Meadow at 7.15pm on the last Friday of every month (except October and December), or for those who prefer a daytime trip, we leave Norwich around 11.30am and return early evening.

Norwich Beer Festival The branch also organises and runs the Beer Festival, which we hope will go ahead this year from the 25 to 30 October. Visit as a customer and sample some of the several hundred beers available, or get involved by volunteering a few hours - it's loads of fun, a great way to meet people!

Our 2021 charity partner Norfolk SEN Network has been chosen as the Norwich and District CAMRA Branch Charity for 2021. Each year our members nominate local charities to our branch committee, who vote to make the final decision. We work together with the charity to find the best opportunities for them to raise awareness and funds during Norwich Beer Festival in October. Although we can only choose one charity each year, we would like to acknowledge the vital work done by everyone working in the charitable sector in Norfolk.

Find out more at norwichbeerfestival.org.uk Pat Brickley is from the charity: "Norfolk SEN Network, a charity supporting families of children and young people with special educational needs, is absolutely delighted to have been chosen as your Charity of the Year. It has been an extremely busy year for the charity as the law on special educational provision remained the same throughout the pandemic and we were inundated with requests for help from parents struggling to get their child's needs met."

Norfolk Nips Norfolk Nips is the CAMRA magazine for the Norfolk Branches, published quarterly with pub news, features and upcoming events. Read it online or pick up a copy from pubs around Norwich and Norfolk. The magazine is the current national Branch Magazine of the Year! The current and past editions can be found on the branch website norwichcamra.org.uk The branch is also responsible for maintaining information about the 550 pubs in our area on WhatPub.com, CAMRA's national pub guide, and selecting the pubs to be featured in each year's Good Beer Guide, and the branch Pubs & Clubs of the Year. All CAMRA members can score beers online throughout the year, and the

24

@NorwichPubFestival

4,000 Norwich & District branch members have the opportunity to nominate and score their favourite pubs online - this is then collated and averaged to select the best pubs to go into the Good Beer Guide. CAMRA is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and while many may feel the battle to save real ale has been won, there is still a lot of work to do to save our wonderful British pubs! If you'd like to get involved, check out join.camra.org.uk And of course, support our local pubs and breweries by exploring as many of the Norwich Pub Festival zones as you can!
