Zena’s Summer Update: The Government’s Eat Out Scheme, and end of season BBQ ideas The highlight of the foodie year has got to be the governments scheme ‘Eat out to Help Out’ – where hundreds of your favourite restaurants offering up to £10 or 50% off food on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. I wrote a massive list of all the best independent local ones on www.lovenorfolkfood.co.uk - and booked myself in to a host of them.

I think it really helped kick start the local food scene with restaurants, bars and cafes making every effort to keep us all safe with covid policy’s - we felt more comfortable to venture out with face masks and hand sanitiser in tow.

Many places got ‘booked out’ like the Assembly rooms afternoon tea and the farmyards Wednesday 3 course lunch menu for £13.

It’s always good to see new places opening so I rushed at the chance to try the Gatherers new vegetarian restaurant and bar, plenty of al fresco tables and tasty food with a massive cocktail list. Tofurei opened a new café down the lanes with more space to eat and develop while Christopher’s Crepes took over their little shop on Pottergate – adding Ronaldos ice-cream cones to the mix.

Plus Chi is a new street food small local (Cambs) chain that’s opened in Chapelfield food court, along with their sister café The Granary next door.

I Pride myself on trying every restaurant or café in Norwich – I’m now down to the last few before I can tick the done list – but with covid my last booking for L’Hexigone got cancelled – so I’ve now booked in for mine and my hubby’s wedding anniversary for some romantic French bistro food and hopefully a glowing blog on my Instagram account - @love_norwich_food I’ve only heard good things so looking forward to that.

I must admit closing my cookery school gave me a lovely break but that opens back up in September for small groups of 2 and my Food and Drink walking tours will commence next year. All info on my website – www.lovenorfolkfood.co.uk

But if you fancy some last of the summer BBQ tips – •

Cooking on coals is so easy, wrap whole skin on onions, corn on the cob, skin on potatoes or other veggies in tin foil and cook until squashy.

The husk on a corn on the cob makes for a great protector – soak whole husk on corn in water over night and cook straight on to the BBQ.

•

The soaked stripped husks also make a great protective covering for salmon and other meats, veggies and seafood – I simply wrap a piece of salmon in 2 – 3 sheets of wet husk and cook on the BBQ grill.

Warm tortillas, pitta and other flat bread up on the BBQ grill bars – for warm wraps. (no flames – just warm coals)

People get in to a rut with BBQ often cooking the same go to meats – just about anything can be cooked on a BBQ, get inventive with marinated meats, different cuts sea fish and more – I love slices of courgettes, aubergines, peppers and onions cooked on the BBQ while my steaks are resting – making for a tasty side with a splash of the hot stuff and lime.

Marinating is key – meat loves it – try and marinate over night or for extra tastiness go for 48 hours on tougher larger joints and cuts.

Steak loves a good seasoning before cooking, not only will it flavour the meat – salt will also help with the char and seal. (The same for burgers)

Hand-made burgers are super easy – I often just season mince with a good measure of salt and pepper plus add a spoon of mustard and tomato puree – give it a good squish, roll and shape by hand for best results.

You have just got to try Beer butt chicken – simply open a can of beer, place it in the cavity of the chicken (it’s actually the neck and not the butt!!!) and place ‘up right’ on the BBQ (preferably ones with a cover) – the legs and beer can act as a tripod to keep it upright. The steam from the beer impregnates the meat making it oh so tender and flavourful.

Bourbon Soaked Pork

Ingredients: 1 kg of pork shoulder 50cl Jack Daniels (or other bourbon /whiskey) A handful of peppercorns A pinch of sea salt 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil

Method: 1. Stab holes in the joint in the pork and place in a bowl 2. Pour in bourbon/whiskey, cover the bowl and place in fridge for at least 4 hours (overnight is preferred) 3. Take out of the fridge 2 hours before cooking.

4. Preheat the oven to 180F 5. Place pork and any liquid in a roasting tin lined with foil (enough foil to wrap the joint) 6. Sprinkle salt and peppercorns and olive oil over the pork.

7. Wrap pork in the foil and place in oven cook for 4hrs or till the juices run clear, un cover the meat for the last 1.5 hrs of cooking.

8. Leave to cool for 15 mins before serving.

Dutch Lemon Chicken

Ingredients: 6 chicken thighs/portions 6 lemons 2 oz Olive Oil A pinch of sea salt A pinch of pepper

Method: 1. Place the chicken portions into a bowl.

2. Juice and grate the zest of 6 lemons.

3. Whisk together the juice of the lemons and the olive oil.

4. Pour the mixture over the chicken, cover and place in the fridge for 3 hours.

5. Pour chicken portions and mixtures into a lined roasting dish and sprinkle salt and pepper over the chicken.

6. Preheat the oven to 180F, place chicken into the oven for 45 mins or till cooked and juices run clear.

7. Allow to rest for 5 mins before serving.

The Theatre Round-up

Yes, it’s September, finally Covid summer is over and although we still need to be alert and our world and this beautiful city will be forever changed our theatre scene is finally getting up and going again. I couldn’t write this theatre round up without saying a huge well done to all the theatres, groups, teachers, actors and dancers who have done such I wonderful job during the crisis of both continuing to keep us entertained and working hard behind the scene’s and vocally campaigning for survival.

From the moment outdoor performances were authorised we started to see the return of performances, while Strange Fascination Theatre put on their sold out socially distanced open air theatre Alice in Wonderland Tour, Norwich Theatre’s Interlude season was not far behind and Norwich welcomed it with open arms.

If you happened to catch the Alice in Wonderland tour and saw Hayley Evenett in action you may want to check the latest episode of the successful podcast Mockery Manor now available.
