hen NYA’s Lower and Middle School Science Chair and Middle School Experiential Education Director, Danielle Barschdorf, was working on her Master’s Degree in Environmental Science Education, she took a course on field science where she learned how to seine for fish and use the macroinvertebrates in the water to determine the biotic water quality of a river. “It was so engaging for me, and I realized that we had such a great resource of the Royal River in our back yard to study,” she explained.

Out in the field, students seek to learn about the biodiversity of the fish and macroinvertebrates in the river. They also study the water quality based on what they catch in their nets. They present their results to the community once they’re done.

The students love wearing the waders and spending time in the river. “It’s so much fun to see their faces when they catch an American Eel or a crayfish,” said Danielle. For her, she loves studying macroinvertebrates. “They are so small and so interesting to identify. I love that these unassuming, small creatures tell us so much about a river with their presence or absence. I love that the students are learning real field science techniques and that they present their findings to our community with such confidence and poise,” she said.

Mrs. Gallagher Certified National Geographic Educator

“Don’t just teach students about the world—teach them how to change it.”

L

ower School elementary teacher, Shannon Gallagher, is now a certified National Geographic Educator. Through online meetings, workshops, and independent study, Shannon learned about the NatGeo curriculum framework and educational resources. She created lessons aligned with the framework, receiving exemplary reviews from peers, and certification guides for keeping within the mantra of the program, “Don’t just teach students about the world—teach them how to change it.”

And she is! For the past 11 years, Mrs. G’s class has participated in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean Up Month. This year, her class saved 146 pieces of plastic and additional items from entering the marine ecosystem. They will return in the spring to learn about sand dollars inhabiting the area they cleaned. “My whole life, I have connected with National Geographic media as inspiration for learning and teaching about the world,” said Shannon. “This project challenged me and infused new energy into my teaching. I strive to exemplify lifelong learning for my students; it is when I am challenged that I am reminded of my young ones who are all learning new things.”

Chew on This

Middle School teachers Annie Powell and Erika Sahlman joined forces to create a unique interdisciplinary unit for their eighth grade students. English and science classes learned about food—from its history, to its impact on our bodies, to how we are influenced to buy and eat certain foods, to new food movements. Powell’s English class read “Chew on This” by Eric Schlosser that “tells the fascinating, frightening truth about how the fast food industry has been feeding off children for generations.” Sahlman’s Human Biology class studied nutrition and what food does to the body. Students partnered up to research a “deep” question about food pertaining to nutrition, advertising, social effects, history, and more. They then presented their arguments in a 4–5 minute TED-style talk. The class topics ranged from, “What’s the Beef with Wagyu?,” to ”Diet Culture, Cut it out of Your Life.”

After 20 years (13 at NYA) teaching middle school history, Mr. E now teaches a room full of third graders. “I was looking for a new challenge and opportunities in my teaching career,” said Echeverria. “I knew I wanted to stay in the classroom and remain at NYA. The idea of being a homeroom teacher and getting to teach a variety of subjects really appealed to me.”

The Lower School and Middle School buildings are on opposite ends of campus and worlds apart. “It was like my first year of teaching all over again. I was nervous, and did not know what to expect, but it has been a blast so far. Getting to work with this age group and teach multiple subjects has been great. The faculty in the Lower School are so supportive and helpful. The transition would not have been as smooth without all their help and advice.”

“These are the first years of learning, the first years of brain development that lay the foundation for future education as well as inspire and foster children’s natural curiosities for learning,” NYA kindergarten teacher, KB Lavertu, explains. She’s been working in early childhood education for ten years, at NYA since 2018. Along with teaching certifications, she holds a Master’s Degree in Montessori Education from USM. “The moment I witnessed the inner workings of a Montessori classroom, I immediately fell in love,” she said. Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900’s, this method of teaching is based on hands-on learning, self-directed activity, and collaborative play. Teachers offer age-appropriate activities to guide the learning process.

KB created the Kindergarten Montessori Bridge Program at NYA and wrote the handbook for NYA’s kindergarten curriculum, where teachers bridge the gap between Montessori and the more traditional methods used in the upper grades. “This bridge is the path from the concrete work young children need toward more abstract learning that comes in first grade to PG.”

we instill a love for adventure and a pure love for learning that continues to motivate and empower children s creative energies toward all future learning

KB did not grow up with a Montessori education, but during her master’s program, she often thought, “Wow, if only I was taught math or language like this!” If she had experiences with tactile, concrete materials, she wonders how much easier she might have learned.

“By doing what we do, by following the children’s natural curiosities to move with autonomy and explore with their hands, we instill a love for adventure, and a pure love for learning that continues to motivate and empower children’s creative energies toward all future learning,” she explains. “It’s that ultimate cultivation for the love of learning.”

Peter Sillin turned his hobby of baking in to NYA’s first Baking Club. The club meets once a month sharing confections and recipes of a predetermined theme. All the remaining goodies are sold at school lunches with 100% of the proceeds going to a charity of the club’s choosing.

Dr. George Philip LeBourdais ‘99 is a teacher, curator, and writer who is currently the Head of Partnerships at Polygence, an online research academy that connects high school students worldwide with academic experts and mentors to complete student-driven research projects. Students don’t have the pressure of grades while completing their projects, but they can earn college credit. Polygence partners over 100 students a month with one of their over 2,000 available mentors.

Last year, the NYA Kiva Team climbed into the top ten in total lending among school teams in the world! The NYA team has lent over $180,000 since the club’s inception in 2008 by NYA History Department Chair, Peter Sillin. The team has made 6,972 loans, enabling others from around the world to start or grow their businesses. If measured by the number of loans made, the NYA Kiva Team ranks seventh in the world for school teams. The NYA Kiva Club holds a few fundraisers on campus throughout the year to raise money to loan out $25 at a time. As the loans are repaid, the money is loaned out again. So far, the club has a 98% repayment rate, so the flow has continued to build. Kiva is an international nonprofit, with a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive by crowdfunding loans and unlocking capital for low-income entrepreneurs.

“It’s so gratifying to see students light up and discover their passions as they get ready for college,” said George Phillip, or “G.P.” as his friends call him. “Through their research projects and work with mentors, students are not only able to find their joy, they are also connected with other students who share their interests, which makes for a really enriching experience—academically, socially, and emotionally.”

Enrolled at NYA from seventh grade through his graduation in 1999, G.P. went on to earn a B.A. in Art History, French, and Italian (Cum Laude, College Scholar) from Middlebury College; a M.A. in History of Art & Architecture from Williams College and the Clark Art Institute; and his Ph.D. from Stanford in the History of Art & Architecture. At NYA, G.P. was incredibly involved, describing himself as a “butterfly” who moved easily between his friends on the soccer and track teams, to his friends who he competed with at the All-State Music Festivals, and those who starred with him in NYA’s production of Bye, Bye, Birdie. “At NYA, the teachers and coaches supported the diverse interests of my classmates and me,” said G.P. who went to join the crew team at Middlebury and earn a Fulbright Award to study at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. “During my time in AP Art History at NYA, we learned about art, history, politics, languages, creativity in one course—all things that I was passionate about,” remembered G.P. “That class, taught by Charlie Hudson, set me on a path to my future pursuits and guided a lot of my choices. My time at NYA inspired me to go into education myself.”

In December 2019, the NYA Board of Trustees approved the Strategic Vision 2020 Plan which articulates the importance of growing the endowment; supporting academic programs; and creating academic, athletic, and performing arts facilities to support those programs and to allow students and faculty to thrive. “This gift is incredibly impactful because it is far beyond a gift to hockey. It is an investment in our strategic vision that includes investing in the performing arts, growing the endowment, and adding innovative programs,” continued Jackson. “At NYA, teamwork and the benefits of an active lifestyle are emphasized in the classroom, through athletics, and beyond,” said Trustee

Frederique Daniel. “With our gift, we hope students will continue to pursue healthy, active lifestyles, individually and with their teammates, with all the resources they need right at their fingertips. This new facility will be the epicenter for athletics, recreation, health, and wellness on campus.”

fter over 30 years, Nora Krainis will take her final bow at NYA at the end of this school year. As NYA’s Vocal Music and Theatre Arts Director, she developed these programs and received statewide and national acclaim. The American Choral Directors Association recognized her dedication to the arts in 2014 with the Choral Director of the Year honor and feature in Choral Director Magazine.

There’s nothing like it – it builds strong bonds and feeds the soul.” She uses this same team philosophy to bridge arts and athletics in the most unique way. Krainis has coached the NYA Girls Varsity Volleyball team for the past 16 years, and she’s made singing as much a part of daily practice

as sets and serves. The Panther volleyball team performs the Nation Anthem a capella before every home game. This beautiful act has grabbed the attention of opponents and local news outlets, and they are often asked to sing at away games as well. This has largely contributed to the program’s five MPA blue sportsmanship banners, four of which came in consecutive years. “NYA has been my family for the past 30 years. Whether teaching sixth or seventh grade science, Middle or Upper School math, chorus, or coaching drama or volleyball, I have really enjoyed (and will miss) working with my colleagues and with the students,” reminisced Krainis.

“The woods would be very quiet if no birds sang there but those who sang best.” Every student of Nora’s knows this quote by Henry Van Dyke as it is printed prominently on the choral room wall. It is Nora’s mantra, and it sets the stage for every lesson at every level. “Everyone can sing. Everyone,” said Krainis. “You don’t have to be the best, or even good. As a group, as a team, we all blend together to make a beautiful sound. There is a power in singing together that transcends all traditions, ethnicities, and socio-economic conditions.

For her dedication to North Yarmouth Academy, Nora Krainis deserves a standing ovation.

NYA Drama had to keep the curtain closed and lights down in Safford for the winter drama season due to COVID-19 restrictions. But, the show must go on! So the young thespians created a sketch comedy show, NY-A Comedy Show, with help from an industry pro. Theater Arts teacher, Nora Krainis, called on long-time friend, Nick Bernstein, for guidance. Bernstein just happens to be Senior VP of Late Night Programming (West Coast) at ViacomCBS and the executive in charge of the Late Late Show with James Corden. Bernstein met virtually with the cast and crew throughout the process offering advice in writing, filming, comedic timing, and everything in between. He even filmed and edited a few of the sketches. The NY-A Comedy Show had titles like, “Keeping up with the Canadians,” “Substitute Todd,” and “Daughters of Power.” Nothing and no one was safe from the parodies that poked fun at everything from wellness screenings, campus-renowned Zani™ hand sanitizer, and the golf team. his past year, NYA received certification as a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Net Generation School. Through a partnership with the USTA, which included a grant to support the construction of the new Poulin Family Tennis Courts, the Academy also received training programs, teaching and learning tools, rightsized equipment, and access to experts in an effort to introduce young people to the game of tennis. Lower School physical education teacher, Heather Dean, and Upper School tennis coach, Lori Poulin P’22, used the Net Generation curriculum and equipment to teach tennis to students in kindergarten

to grade five. The USTA Net Generation Tennis format is about fitting tennis to kids based on age, physical size, and skill level. By using age appropriate court dimensions, equipment, net

heights, and scoring systems, coupled with a play component, kids will have more fun and success learning to play tennis. “We are thrilled to have North Yarmouth Academy on board as a Net Generation school partner. There are countless physical and mental benefits of tennis, and we’re excited to introduce the lifetime sport to so many new students. Hopefully, we will see many of these players continue on with tennis well beyond school hours,” said Matt Olson, USTA New England Executive Director and COO.

he NYA Panthers and Blue Devils of Lewiston faced off on the ice for the first time in over 15 years this past winter. Interstate travel restrictions on school sports blew the whistle on a large majority of the boys and girls prep ice hockey schedules. With most NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) opponents out of state, the list of competitors was reduced to in-state schools. However, Hebron Academy and Kents Hill School were closed campuses. Berwick Academy called off games. Bridgton Academy, an all-boys school, could only fill spots in the boys schedule. Head boys hockey coach, Mike Warde, and his counterpart at Lewiston High School, Jamie Belleau, both looking to fill game schedules, seized the opportunity to reignite the once great rivalry. The two schools have not battled since NYA joined the prep ranks in the 2004-05 season. Since the last meeting between the boys teams, Lewiston continued to be a perennial powerhouse winning three of their nine trips to the Class A state championships. The equally impressive Lewiston girls are the reigning Class A champs, and their only loss the previous two seasons came in the 2019 state championship game. NYA boys have taken the Holt Conference in 2019 and 2020. On the girls side, the Panthers have built a solid program claiming big tournament wins in the Pingree Cup. When the snow settled, the NYA boys took the W in all three meetings. The NYA girls skated to one win and a tie. It was great to see this historic rivalry renewed!

YA Athletic Director, Kelsy Ross, received the Past President Rising Star Award from the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA) this year. This is Kelsy’s third year at NYA, and during that time, she’s experienced some of the challenging times for school athletics in noted history. Her recognition is unquestionably deserved and applauded by the entire NYA community. Congratulations, Kelsy!

Travis Roy: A Life & A Legacy

N

ESN (New England Sports Network) visited NYA’s Travis Roy Ice Arena this summer to film “Travis Roy: A Life & A Legacy,” a documentary about the life of Travis Roy. NESN reporter, Justine Pourvelis, spoke with former NYA art teacher and department chair, Susan Myer Riley, about her relationship with Travis through art therapy. Myer Riley spent 22 years at NYA and taught Roy while he was a student. The two reconnected after Roy’s accident for weekly art lessons, where Travis learned to hold a paintbrush in his mouth. The two displayed work together in the NYA Curtis Gallery in 2012. The documentary should be out early this winter.

O

liver Wahlstrom ‘19 is in his second full year in the National Hockey League with the New York Islanders and one of the team’s points leaders so far in the 2021–2022 season. The NHL rising star attended NYA from fifth to seventh grade, and memories of NYA run deep. Everything from Mr. Daigle’s breakfast sandwiches and churros to accidentally breaking Mrs. Krainis’s window with a lacrosse ball. Aside from antics with friends, whom he still keeps in contact with today, he gives the teachers and staff full credit for the support he received. “I was never good at presentations; I would always get nervous. The faculty at NYA helped me develop as an all-around student. I felt comfortable leaving and trying a new challenge. Now, there’s a lot of media, a lot of interviews, and it’s all about how you carry yourself on and off the ice. What I started at a young age with NYA, it’s helping a lot right now,” he said. The Academy was more than a stop on a greater path to Wahlstrom. It was and is a piece of home, “The culture was awesome. It was just an awesome community and a great place to grow up and develop as a human being. NYA is a special place for me and my family and will always have a place in my heart.”

YA art students in every grade have the fortune of learning from successfully practicing artists. Christa Mecham in the Lower School, Andrew Cook in Middle School, and Colby Myer in the Upper School are active artists with their own studios and demand for their work. Blending that with their zeal for teaching and ability to inspire makes for a masterpiece. “It’s important to be an artist while teaching students art because I am constantly surrounded and involved in all aspects of art,” said Mecham. “I frequently become inspired by how other artists all over the world create new and unique art. Seeing what others do, and knowing that anything is possible in the world of creating, is such a joy. My hope is that my knowledge and understanding of the many different techniques, mediums, and ways to create a work of art always encourages my students to make their own.” Block-printed cards inspired by the nature and the coast of Maine where she grew up are what Mecham is best known for. She enjoys painting with acrylic and watercolor but has a love of silkscreen printing on paper and fabrics.

art[ist] teachers “I enjoy including detail in my pieces, as well as teaching it, which is an art all on its own! I very much enjoy being an artist and being able to teach my craft and skills to my students. I find it’s the best job in the world to do.” Mecham’s work can be found in local shops like Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine or online at cardsbychrista.com.

The breakthroughs, the successes, and the ahha moments make teaching art a worthwhile and really fun profession.” Cook has become known as “The Lobster Artist” up and down the coast of New England. His prints such as “Buoy Pile” & “Long Island Blue Sea Glass” are iconic in the region. Visit lobsteringisanart.com, and you will see exactly why.

Andrew Cook was the ultra-creative kid who had no idea why creativity escaped so many others. He blamed schools for not teaching every student that art is in us all. “I wanted to change and teach young minds that they were more than capable of being creative before they convinced themselves they could not even draw a stick figure,” said Cook. “Teaching art to Middle School students is inspiring, exciting, and rejuvenating. Artists run to our studio with ideas pouring out of each one. I teach that you cannot create artwork wrong, and no one can create a work of art the way they do. With each new class we explore, discover, fail, and try again. We learn from one another, and share our thoughts and concepts freely without worrying about ridicule or negativity.”

Myer’s subjects include birds, deer, and the human form. His most notable works are scenes of aspen trees. “My style is representational with a touch of magical realism. I try to paint the essence of a place and give my audience a unique perceptual experience.” His more recent works are experiments with gold leafed surfaces mixed with thick impasto strokes in an effort to synthesize the two mediums and build a multitextural surface.

It’s a two-way street in Mr. Cook’s room. In his third year at NYA, the enthusiastic art students have rekindled his interests in other areas of art. “Teaching art has allowed me to revisit mediums I had not touched in decades, pushing ideas and concepts in directions I never would have thought I was capable of. Working alongside artists generates a sense of wonder, an energy that fuels our decision and mark making.

Colby is represented by Pando Fine Art (pandofineart. com) in Park City, Utah where there is a growing market for his work.

“It is important to be passionate about the things you teach,” said Colby Myer. “I like to lead by example. I always keep a piece or two in progress in the NYA art studio so I can show students that I am working through the same things they are. It helps connect me to them.”

Dr. Sagaree Sengupta—NYA’s Renaissance Woman

English teacher and writing coach, Dr. Sagaree Sengupta came to NYA in 2018. Poetry, fiction, and literary translations are just part of her creative talents. Born in West Bengal, she left India for Nova Scotia at age eight, and at ten, her family moved to Athens, Georgia, where her geologist father was on the faculty at the University of Georgia. In 1968 Athens, she experienced firsthand newly integrated schools, and having to explain that she wasn’t black or white, she was brown—Indian.

Gretchen Bergill joins NYA as Director of College Counseling

YA’s new Director of College Counseling, Gretchen Bergill, hit the ground running this fall with 48 members of the Class of 2022 looking for guidance on their college search process. Gretchen has vast experience and was more than ready for the job! Prior to joining NYA, she served as the Director of College Counseling at Kents Hill School. Prior to her tenure at Kents Hill, Gretchen served as Associate Director of College Counseling for 13 years at Phillips Exeter Academy. She also served as Director of College Counseling at the Sage Ridge School in Reno, NV. Gretchen earned a B.A. in American Studies and French from Colby College. She began her career working as an Assistant Dean of Admission at Colby. “I’ve wanted to work at NYA since my long ago days as an admissions officer at Colby so it’s exciting to Alpine American be here, and it’s been ta es-e Sengup e crocus By Sagare ds among th garden be ey bask e Th great getting to know the th g. in on al smashed ds sift pine. haven’t Al o The clou al an ff ic the bu l, Amer students, faculty, and staff. During the pandemic, she resolved to use her many journals to draw. “I decided to draw one object every day—little tiny things—as a discipline.” Always a doodler, she found it calming, and she continues to draw daily. She now has beautiful books, and an Instagram account, spilling with work. Sagaree’s mother is a selftaught artist, and Sagaree was encouraged to work with her hands. “We always made things ourselves out of what we had in the house— Christmas cards, etc.” She taught herself to sew at age 12 and was constantly experimenting. Her parents were a big cultural influence. Her house flowed with art, music, and science. A true academic, she has degrees from Cornell; the University of Wisconsin, Madison; and the University of Pennsylvania, She’s published original work, lectured, translated literature, and discovered a love for teaching. She’s taught courses in South Asian poetry, literature, and history as well as Bhakti, Urdu, and Hindi readings, and more. In this fall’s creative writing class at NYA, the entire semester is creating poetry. Next semester will be fiction. She said it’s better for the brain this way—instead of sampling a sensory art like poetry. In addition to drawing, Sagaree continues to write. “I’m writing poetry right along with the students in my class,” she said.

NYA Receives Anonymous $400,000 to Support Character Development and Service

Betsy Tomlinson, NYA’s Director of Character Education and Leadership

NYA received an anonymous gift of $400,000 to create and support a character and service initiative. The initiative includes a new director of character education and leadership position to provide an over-arching strategy for the Academy’s service and community engagement activities across all divisions. Using NYA’s core community values as a compass, the goal is for students to develop skills and reflect on volunteerism. The program aims to encourage growth and resilience while building confidence, courage, empathy, and an appreciation for social responsibility.

Respect Honesty Perseverance Compassion Responsibility Thank you to the Parents’ Association for all they do for NYA.   NYA PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION OFFICERS Patrick Cannon, President, P’22 Tom Kirby, Vice President, P’28, P’30 Dewey Mote, Treasurer, P’29, P’31 Sarah Kirby, Secretary, P’28, P’30 Danielle King, Upper School Coordinator, P ’22, P’24 Erin Houghton, Middle School Coordinator, P’28 Jess Lynch, Lower School Coordinator, P’29, P’31 Christine Byrne, Volunteer Coordinator, P’23, P’27

“In our own children, NYA created a foundation for lifelong learning through shared community experiences, hands-on learning, and relationship building,” said the anonymous benefactors. “In a world where respect, honesty, and compassion are so needed, we wanted to ensure the NYA faculty had the support and resources needed to continue their important work in this area.”

David Griswold ’03 Helps the NYA Environmental Club

David Griswold ‘03 helped the NYA Environmental Club complete their goal of converting the entire campus to LED lighting. Griswold is the author of the children’s book, “Fur & Feather Stand Together,” a story of a puffin and a polar bear who join forces with their community to save the ice that is melting around them. In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2021, Griswold donated copies of his book to all who contribute $50 or more to NYA’s LED conversion. On Earth Day, Griswold met virtually with NYA Lower and Middle School classes to offer a lesson on protecting our environment.

“Dealing with climate change requires each of us to take the steps we can locally and individually to reduce our carbon footprint,” explained Griswold. “But now, more than ever, we also need to activate the hearts and minds of those in our community to take collective action. I am so excited to get to participate in NYA’s efforts to do both as we take action together this Earth Day.”

Betsy Tomlinson will lead this program, providing the over-arching strategy for the Academy’s leadership, service, and community engagement activities. She most recently served as Director of Communications at Alford Lake Camp, an all-girls summer camp in Hope, Maine, and she spent many years at Loomis Chaffee, an independent school in Windsor, Connecticut. “I’m excited to work with the whole school community to focus on character and leadership education,” said Betsy.

Record Year for Giving to NYA

Giving to the Academy Fund Reaches $297,097

The Academy Fund provides vital support for faculty, financial aid, student programming, the arts, athletics, campus improvements, and operations—making an immediate, tangible difference in the lives of NYA students.

Over $230,000 in Gifts to the Endowment

At NYA, making an endowed gift is one of the most powerful ways to have a lasting impact. Endowment gifts support students, faculty, and programs, driving progress for centuries. Last fiscal year, over $230,000 was contributed to endowed funds.

A Message from the Director of Development Greetings from NYA, Each year, alumni, parents, students, grandparents, staff, faculty, and friends play a vital role in furthering NYA’s mission through their gifts of time and resources to the Academy. In the pages that follow, we gratefully acknowledge the hundreds of people who invested $1,217,309 in the fiscal year 2021. This inspiring show of support helped us to bring students to campus for full-time, in-person learning safely in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and allowed faculty members to creatively adapt their teaching and learning in response to ever-changing global circumstances. Even in a year unlike any other, NYA students found success in the classroom, on the playing field, in the studio, and in the lab. We are exceptionally grateful to every community member whose support—in the form of time, energy, connection, or philanthropy—made this experience possible. Thank you! This Report of Gifts recognizes every graduate, parent, faculty and staff member, friend, grandparent, foundation, and every company that supported NYA in the 2020–2021 fiscal year. With gratitude, Jennifer Richard P’29, P’31, P’33 Director of Development P: (207) 847-5429 E: jrichard@nya.org

An endowment gift is a donation that is given with the intent to preserve the original value of the gift, and to grow it over time. The donated funds are held in perpetuity and invested, and only the income from the investment is used to fund an annual distribution. The annual distribution is spent according to the donor’s wishes. Through this dedicated stream of income, an endowment gift ensures the stability of a scholarship, faculty support, or program forever. Due to the generosity of benefactors and strategic investment management, the Academy’s endowment continues to grow.

NYA Soirée

In total, $276,705 was raised at the 37th Annual NYA Soirée through the auction, corporate sponsorships, paddle raise, and gifts. These funds are being used to honor the dedication and excellence of the NYA faculty—investing in their professional development, providing added classroom resources, and broadening the educational opportunities available to NYA students.

Another Record-Breaking Year for Show Your Love

Your participation matters! During the Show Your Love giving challenge in March 2021, 564 members of the NYA community made gifts to help unlock a $10,000 gift from Allen ’60 and Vicki Bornheimer GP’31. Also during the campaign, James ’98 and Courtney Anson ’98 Garrett; Nathan Isaacson ’06, Linc ’75, Tara ’04, and Chelsey ’06 Merrill; Hugh Robbins ’99 and the Gerritys—Peter ’05, Henry ’07, Lucy ’09, and Charles ’12 challenged young alumni (grads 2000–2020) to make a gift. Together, the alumni group offered $8,000 if 80 young alumni made a gift. When the challenge ended, 89 young alumni had participated. Together, we shattered goals and raised $69,928 for NYA!

Campus-Wide LED Conversion Spurred by Student Environmental Club

Together with their faculty advisor, the NYA Environmental Club works to increase awareness of environmental issues among the NYA community and encourage better stewardship of natural resources and the environment. In 2019, Environmental Club student leaders proposed a campus-wide conversion to LED lighting. LED technology consumes less power, reduces greenhouse and carbon dioxide emission, and generates less heat while also offering dramatic savings. In the fall of 2020, NYA received over $23,000 in gifts to support a campus-wide conversion to LED lighting. Thanks to this generous support, all buildings on campus have made the switch from halogen and incandescent lighting to LED.

Opportunity & Excellence Fund Created to Help Students Succeed

Last year, NYA created the Opportunity and Excellence Fund to ensure students from every socioeconomic background can fully benefit from the transformative NYA experience. The Fund reduces financial barriers that might prevent students from accessing the range of activities and opportunities available at NYA, including support of academic tutoring, health service, needbased financial aid, participation in service projects, transportation, dining, activity fees, and emergency needs. More than $15,000 in gifts to the Opportunity and Excellence Fund last year allowed our entire community to grow, learn, and thrive.

1960s

ravis Roy ’94, was revered by the sports world as an example of determination and courage. After suffering a life-changing spinal cord injury just 11 seconds into his first hockey game for Boston University, he established the Travis Roy Foundation to help other spinal cord injury survivors and to fund research. His legacy as motivational speaker, philanthropist, founder of the Travis Roy Foundation, and advocate for spinal cord research is cemented in perpetuity. Add to this legacy, a generous proponent of education. Following his death in 2020, North Yarmouth Academy received a bequest from the estate of Travis Roy to support need-based financial aid for talented NYA students.

“NYA is deeply grateful to Travis for his lifelong impact on the Academy, and the generous bequest he left in support of talented NYA students,” said Head of School, Ben Jackson. “During his time at NYA, Travis began to believe in himself as a student and took pride in his academic accomplishments. Small class sizes, meaningful faculty-student relationships, and an overall environment of positivity and support allowed Travis to flourish as never before,” said Brenda and Lee Roy P’94. “As a small but gifted athlete, he was challenged by the level of athletic competition NYA offered. When Travis moved on from NYA, he took with him life skills and confidence that clearly served him well. He was, and we will be, forever grateful to the Academy.” With this gift, Travis becomes the newest member of the Founders’ Society, which honors alumni, parents, and friends who have provided legacy gifts to North Yarmouth Academy through an estate plan or other financial arrangement. Our business simply would not have survived this pandemic without her, and for this reason the MAMM Board of Directors and I are thrilled to name her as our 2020 Maine Music Educator.”
