NYA Head of School

Message from the Head of School

At NYA, we empower our students to pursue their passions and interests as they develop a foundation for a lifetime of learning.”

Choosing a school for a child is one of the most important decisions a family will make. NYA continues to build upon its proud 205-year history by bringing out the best in its students from 18 months through the Upper School. NYA’s committed and dedicated faculty recognizes each child as a unique individual through authentic student-teacher relationships. The strength of these relationships is supported by the school’s mission to deliver a rigorous academic program, character development, and diverse opportunities in athletics, arts, and extracurricular activities. At NYA, we empower our students to pursue their passions and interests as they develop a foundation for a lifetime of learning. Our beautiful campus is the daily home to a community of thoughtful, creative, and inquisitive students, inspiring faculty, and families committed to an exceptional education for their children. To truly learn how NYA can make a difference for your child, schedule a tour with the Admission Office today. I look forward to meeting you.

CHARACTER, CULTURE, AND COMMUNITY In a small school environment, we are privileged to know every student. The relationships that develop between our students and our teachers enable us to guide each individual on his or her journey to adulthood. That individual attention also enables us to help mold students’ character and integrity as they face choices and challenges. High expectations go hand-in-hand with exceptional support. The culture at NYA is one where it’s the norm to work hard and do well, where students support each other, and where teachers always make time for students and parents. All of this creates a community that is a safe place where students can take risks, fail and succeed, discover their passions, and learn how they fit not only into NYA, but on the wider world stage.

NYA Lower School

LOWER SCHOOL

GROW WITH US

BELONG

The Lower School embraces Montessori methods through kindergarten. In the first and second grades, the program builds off that Montessori foundation, continuing to provide an active and engaging learning environment. Our third and fourth grades continue to encourage independence, social and emotional learning, and academic growth, while promoting a sense of community and preparing students for our Middle School.

NYA Middle School

NOT YOUR PARENTS’ MIDDLE SCHOOL In grades 5–8, we focus on giving students a solid foundation—academically, athletically, artistically, and socially—to prepare them for further academic and life challenges. NYA’s Middle School is a safe, nurturing environment; it is also a vibrant, stimulating place where you can feel the energy in the air.

UPPER SCHOOL

HIGHER ASPIRATIONS YOU

In the Upper School, students learn not only the critical thinking and writing skills that are essential in every field, but also how to manage their time and collaborate with others. They gain the confidence to establish relationships with teachers, mentors, and other adults. The work is challenging; the days are full; the rewards are lifelong.

NYA Our Difference

WHAT MAKES NYA

DIFFERENT?

Broad Extracurricular After School Offerings Students are required to participate in activities all year, including at least two team or individual sports, to build teamwork, physical fitness, and confidence.

College Counseling Colleges know us. Representatives from over 100 colleges visit campus each year. Our college counselors regularly provide personalized assistance to our Upper School students as they navigate the college selection process.

Arts Every Day

Advisors

Visual and performing arts enrich every student’s educational experience daily. The program is uniquely broad and offers paths to explore and discover inside and outside the classroom.

Every student has an advisor to guide them as they navigate academic and life challenges, and take advantage of opportunities. These relationships are lasting.

200+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE In 1814, there was a need to educate the area’s young people, prepare them for college, to be good citizens, and to thrive in an unpredictable, demanding world. That need is greater than ever today, and NYA approaches it like no other school.

NYA Experience

More! Dress code, visiting artists and writers, small classes, invested teachers, NYA’s Travis Roy Ice Arena, 100-point grading scale, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary projects. With two centuries to cover, there are enough differences at NYA to fill a book.
