When we walk into a gallery

at The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC), what we experience is created by creative and thoughtful museum professionals. A healthy museum elicits a sense of curiosity and inspiration, challenges our beliefs, and tells the stories of our cultural past. The MAC is a healthy museum.

As the U.S. and the world grappled with COVID-19, the MAC survived months of closure and restricted capacity. When in-person gatherings were not possible, the remarkable MAC professionals did not miss a beat and shifted to virtual offerings. This challenging time has truly been a testament to the resiliency of the organization and the very important role that the MAC holds in our greater community.

It was my sincere honor to serve as President of the Board of Trustees for the past two years. During that time the Board worked closely with MAC staff and community members to complete a three-year strategic plan. The strategic plan process required us to examine where we have been, where we are now, and chart a course for the immediate future of the MAC. The process was collaborative and filled with optimism.

Your generous support is essential to keep the MAC thriving and relevant. I encourage you to visit the MAC often, get involved as a member or a volunteer, shop at the museum store, and visit with our development staff about how you can help create a lasting gift.

Debra Schultz president, mac board of trustees

m pleased to present

our Fiscal Year 2022 (FY’22) Annual Report. We began the year with many unknowns: When can we reopen? Will there be another COVID surge? While this ongoing drama unfolded over the course of the year, the MAC made positive strides in several areas. Most importantly, we completed a strategic plan for 2022–2024 that prioritizes deeper outreach in the community, especially with our tribal partners in the region, while fine-tuning and streamlining areas of our internal operation. Our strategic plan addresses making more of our collection accessible to our visitors through exhibitions and digital platforms. We are also examining longer-term strategies for a permanent collection display.

Despite pandemic challenges, FY’22 had many high points. I’d like to share a few that illustrate some of the larger strides we are making:

CANOES Working with Upper Columbia United Tribes (UCUT), Colville Tribes, Coeur d' Alene Tribe of Indians, Kalispel Tribe of Indians, and Spokane Tribe of Indians, the MAC hosted a canoe carving on our campus from March–November. Carvers from four regional tribes carved two cedar logs into dugout canoes. One canoe will join the MAC’s permanent collection and was given the Salish name sísnce (“little brother”) at a launch in September on the Spokane River. We are excited to partner with UCUT in the future by jointly organizing an annual river voyage with this canoe.

TITLE 1 STUDENTS

We raised over $40,000 to bring Title 1 students throughout Eastern Washington to the MAC to see DreamWorks Animation the Exhibition: Journey from Sketch to Screen. When this was announced to NEWESD 101 region schools, our schedule quickly filled to capacity, and we welcomed several thousand students to our campus to experience this hands-on exhibition.

FEDERAL ARTS FUNDING

The MAC received project funding from three federal agencies: National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This is the first time the MAC has

4
I ’

received funding from any of these agencies in fourteen years. We are thrilled our programs and exhibitions are resonating on a national level and demonstrate our staff and board’s efforts to take on more ambitious, impactful projects.

PERMANENT COLLECTION Our curators are growing our engagement with the permanent collection, as demonstrated by our Golden Harvest: Flour Sacks from the Permanent Collection, and Dancing with Life: Mexican Masks exhibitions, in addition to the Safeco collection of modern art from the Northwest.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH

The MAC currently has over 3,900 members, the largest number in the history of the museum. Membership is an important indicator of how the community is investing in our mission. We aim to grow that number to over 4,000 in FY’23.

TRAVELING EXHIBITION PROGRAM

Our exhibitions are in demand at other museums. As Grandmother Taught: Women, Tradition, and Plateau Art (2021) traveled to the Washington State Historical Society in Tacoma, and we continue to develop exhibitions that will tour nationally: Dancing with Life: Mexican Masks (2024–2026) and Joe Feddersen: Earth, Water, Sky (2024–2025).

PUBLICATIONS Publications can provide a deeper understanding of collections and exhibitions, so we are excited to publish our first exhibition catalog in twelve years. We have begun the planning and design for several future projects, Dancing with Life: Mexican Masks (2022), Campbell House at 125 (2023) and Joe Feddersen: Earth, Water, Sky (2024).

As we broaden our commitment to the community in Spokane and Eastern Washington, we want to thank donors, members, and partners who have contributed to our success in FY’22. Together, we continue to build the MAC into a vibrant platform for art, ideas, and creativity. Our accomplishments in FY’22 have set us up for success in the coming years. We look forward to working with our partners to continue bringing dynamic exhibitions and programs to the region.

Exhibition HIGHLIGHTS

During the 2021–2022 fiscal year, the exhibitions that filled the galleries included DreamWorks Animation: Journey from Sketch to Screen; Awakenings: Traditional Canoes and Calling the Salmon Home; Golden Harvest: Flour Sacks from the Permanent Collection; Continuous Lines: Selections from the Joe Feddersen Collection; and Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Collection. These exhibitions welcomed students, families, and individuals from all over eastern Washington and beyond. The energy that filled the galleries during this time was exciting and fun. It is great to welcome our members and visitors back to full capacity again!

Dreamworks Animation: Journey from Sketch to Screen

March 25–September 11, 2022

Curated by ACMI in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation and Universal Parks & Resorts Live Entertainment.

8

Continuous Lines: Selections from the Joe Feddersen Collection

September 18, 2021–February 6, 2022

Joe Feddersen is an artist working in printmaking, glass, and traditional materials. The exhibition featured work from his personal collection of contemporary American Indian art, reflecting his friendships and artistic interests over the past few decades.

10

Awakenings:

Traditional Canoes and Calling the Salmon Home

September 25, 2021–August 21, 2022

Inspired by the documentary United by Water, the MAC, in collaboration with the United Tribes of the Upper Columbia (UCUT), tells the story of the annual inland canoe journey, and included the carving of two traditional canoes on campus.

Golden Harvest: Flour Sacks from the Permanent Collection

January 22, 2022–January 22, 2023

The MAC’s collection of cloth flour sacks offered a unique window into the early development of Eastern Washington's wheat industry, which today contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the state's economy. The sacks are a tangible reminder of the mills that played a critical role in Spokane’s early growth and reflect the importance of the export market for Washington wheat.

12

Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Collection

October 2, 2021–February 13, 2022

A celebration of beauty, Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Collection featured more than 60 objects, spanning over 30 years of Tiffany’s prolific career. One or American’s most renowned artists, Louis Comfort Tiffany worked in nearly all mediums available to artists and designers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries—glass, ceramic, metalwork, jewelery and painting.

Exhibition organized by the Richard H. Driehaus Museum and toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

Education and PROGRAMS

The MAC’s education department is dedicated to serving all youth in our community. Support from organizations and individuals helps us provide affordable programming for all students. Through programs such as Thursday Night Live, Visual Thinking Strategies, Passports to the Arts, canoe carving, and school field trips, the MAC engages over 7,000 students each year. Visiting the museum is a lasting and impactful experience that fulfills our goal of making arts and culture accessible to every student.

4,120 students took field trips to the MAC

MAC Winter Holiday Celebration

November/December

2021

Visitors enjoyed the Campbell House decorations, scavenger hunt, and fun holiday activities. Hulda Olson, the beloved cook, and other living history characters interacted with guests as they prepared for a holiday celebration.

16

Visual Thinking Strategies

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) uses age-appropriate works of art to teach critical thinking and observational skills to students at all grade levels. The MAC is in its thirteenth year of VTS and works with Spokane Public Schools teachers, administrators, and School Board members with the aim of making VTS an integral part of teaching and learning at the district level. Teachers find that VTS is useful in all curriculum areas, including math, vocabulary, and writing.

EVENTS

The MAC kicked off Fall 2021 and the return of in-person events with the opening of Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Collection, MAC Winter Holiday Celebration and the 5th Annual Artist Studio Tour. Our Annual Gala returned to the Davenport Hotel and we finished up the year by bringing ArtFest back to the museum campus where it began 37 years ago!
