Life at the ‘West ranges everything from hanging with your homies in the library, celebrating at sports games, or hitting up the glow parties or sliding into Spring at the Splash Bash. Student life is as varied as our student population whether that’s studying it up in Tunica or “workin’ on your fitness” in McLendon.
Starting with your first day as a Ranger – orientation, to that welcome week full of events from Luau at the ROC, Meet the Rangers, Water Day, and beyond to the sad last day on campus where you turn your tassel and forge a new path.

BY SARAH SMITH
Summer orientation welcomed many students, some for the first time, to campus kicking off their experience as a Northwest Ranger. This experience is aided by the Northwest Orientation Leaders who put on a fun and entertaining show while showcasing all that Northwest has to offer.
The orientation leaders are student leaders who take on the role of showing students where their classes will be, take them to their first advising session to set up their courses, tell them about activities on campus and more.
This first taste of college life opens the doors and helps future students find their path here at Northwest.

The first party of the semester, the Luau at the ROC brought groovy beachy vibes to right here on campus with fun music DJ’ed by Northwest’s own alum, DJ Chris Rice. This year hula skirts, leis and more were on display as students dressed in their party best for an island adventure.

BY SARAH SMITH
Rangers kicked off the school year with spirit during the annual Meet the Rangers on August 27, 2024, at Bobby Franklin Field. This event introduced all our fall sport athletes as they began their seasons before we knew what we do now and that they’d be champions in their respective sports.
The community and student body welcomed women’s and men’s soccer, rodeo, volleyball, golf, cheer, dance, and the football team.
By the end of the semester, Northwest proudly announced that the Northwest women’s soccer team was national champions, football was MACCC champions, and volleyball season champs. This year has brought great things for the Rangers, and they only have up to go from here.

From copious championships to milestone moments, success was the theme for Northwest athletics in the 2024-25 academic year.
Nearly every Northwest team finished with winning records or qualified for postseason competition on the national stage, highlighted by a 22-0 record for the Lady Rangers’ soccer team, which brought home the first national championship in program history. Along the way, Northwest captured MACCC and NJCAA Region 23 titles and maintained a No. 1 national ranking throughout the duration of the season.
On the gridiron, the Rangers had similar success, rebounding from a season-opening loss to win 10 straight games, finishing with a 10-2 overall record and the 2024 MACCC Championship. Northwest also qualified for the NJCAA Division I Football Playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons and had 18 players sign with four-year programs, such as Mississippi State, Arkansas, Florida State, UCF and Charlotte.
On the hardwood, the Northwest women’s basketball team advanced to the NJCAA Region 23 Playoffs for the second consecutive season, with two players moving on to a pair of NCAA Division I programs.
Both Northwest baseball and softball teams reached the NJCAA national rankings, including a
Top 10 slot for the Rangers’ softball program. Head baseball coach Mark Carson became the all-time winningest coach in the program’s history, surpassing Northwest Sports Hall of Famer Jim Miles, and the Rangers also made the NJCAA Region 23 postseason for the second year in a row.
As for softball, Northwest captured its second-ever berth to the NJCAA Division II World Series, finishing with a 44-12 overall record. This marked the softball program’s first 40-win season, and infielder Ellie Fryar later received NJCAA All-American accolades. Her teammate, Sommer Tyes, was also chosen as an NFCA All-American.
Both men’s and women’s tennis teams advanced to the NJCAA national tournaments for the first time in the same season. The Lady Rangers placed 13th overall in the national tournament field, while the Northwest men finished 16th. Both teams were mainstays in the ITA national rankings, with the women’s team earning a final ranking of No. 15, followed by a No. 17 national slot for the men’s squad.
Golf made its return to Northwest this season, as the Rangers fielded a men’s program for the first time since 2017. Additionally, Northwest also unveiled women’s golf for the first time and reached the NJCAA Division II National Championship tournament following a sixth-place finish in the Gulf District Tournament.
Rodeo was once again well-represented on the national stage this season, as Northwest had four qualifiers for the College National Finals Rodeo. Dakota Smith finished as the Ozark Region champion in bull riding, with Luke Stanley finishing third. Steer wrestlers Christian Cagle and Will Collier also joined the bull riding duo in competing at the CNFR.
There was also a lot to cheer and dance about in January, as the Northwest spirit squads once again brought home championships from the UCA/UDA College Nationals. The Rangers’ cheer team won national titles in the Open Co-Ed Game Day and Open All-Girl Traditional divisions, while the Northwest dance team won back-to-back titles in the Open Hip-Hop division.
Lastly, Northwest also succeeded in the classroom, with a total of 191 selections to the President’s and Vice President’s lists in the Fall 2024 semester, and 178 selections during the spring. Additionally, 194 student-athletes were named to the Fall 2024 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, followed by 163 selections for the spring semester.
In all, the Rangers and Lady Rangers once again proved to be winners, both in athletics and academics.

Homecoming week is one of the most significant events at Northwest with enough red and blue to go around for all Rangers. Homecoming offers the opportunity to cowboy up for dress-up days. The Rangers had a jam-packed week filled with events. Each day the fantastic outfits, positive energy, and rowdy school spirit was present as they went into each themed day. Moving into Monday students decorated t-shirts, pants, hats and more as a part of their homecoming game day attire. Tuesday the Rangers danced the night away sporting their best jersey for the themed “jersey party.” Marching into Wednesday the band, homecoming court, cheerleaders, and more cruised down Ranger Drive as a part of the Homecoming Parade. The cheerful chants, ongoing laughter, and enjoyment was only a small glimpse of what was to come the next day, Thursday. The day everyone had been waiting for, had finally approached, homecoming night! Students and faculty rallied up in the bleachers to cheer on the Rangers as they took on the Holmes Bulldogs where they would end the night with a victorious score of 37-35. During halftime, Allie Reed Greer would be named the 2024 Homecoming Queen. It’s safe to say homecoming week was a success for the Rangers and it’s one for the books.

I think it’s a huge honor. I’m really, really grateful for it, because you know, it’s a hard job. You have to campaign all week and everything. I feel like it’s a really good way to represent the school in a positive way. So, I was really grateful to be crowned.
I would hope kind and honest, definitely honest. I think anybody on the team would say that, and then loyal, because I really feel like I’m a loyal person to others, especially friends and family.
Doing anything with my teammates, being a part of stuff on campus, like when they do parties or when they do the slip and slide, like right before summer, or the staff first faculty basketball game. I really like being a part of campus life and doing all kinds of stuff like that, and then doing stuff with my roommates and my teammates.
I want to remember it as a safe space and just a time of peace. I really feel like anywhere I go on campus I always see people speaking to one another or speaking to me, and I don’t know, I just consider it a really positive environment.
I’m actually going to go to Delta State. I didn’t know I was going to go, but I’m going to Delta State to play soccer. Then I’m going to try and do the speech pathology program there because I’ve heard they have a really good program.

Northwest Mississippi Community College celebrated Sept. 12 the opening of its newest men’s residence hall, Lamar Hall, named after Mississippi State Rep. John Thomas “Trey” Lamar, III. The naming of Lamar Hall was unanimously approved by the college’s Board of Trustees at its monthly meeting in August.
Lamar, who was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 2011, serves the citizens of District 8, which includes Tate and Lafayette counties. He is currently chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and has been a longtime supporter of the college both personally and through the legislature. He and his parents, John and Ann Lamar, are all distinguished alumni of the college.
“Our success as a college is due to great support from friends and partners outside the college, and that’s what Rep. Lamar is,” said Northwest President, Dr. Michael J. Heindl. “He’s a tremendous friend, partner and supporter.”
“We are excited to honor him in this way,” Dr. Heindl continued. “He loves this community, this region and this state and works very hard for all of us here. He is so befitting of this honor.”
The naming of Lamar Hall was kept secret until the ribbon cutting, and Lamar was unaware the building was named after him until he arrived on campus, when he was told during the college’s September board meeting held prior to the ribbon cutting.
“I was not prepared to have to say anything today,” Lamar said, recounting the story of how he almost didn’t make it to campus. “Surprised is all I can say–I can think of so many people that are way more deserving to have this building named after them than myself. This

has been special all I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart. This means the world to me and my family, and I am truly honored.”
Lamar is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, Mississippi College School of Law and Washington University School of Law. During law school at MC, he served on the Moot Court Board and as president of the Christian Legal Society. After college, he returned to his hometown of Senatobia to begin practicing at Lamar & Hannaford, the law firm founded by his grandfather in 1958.
He is a member of Senatobia Rotary Club, serves as deacon at First Baptist Church in Senatobia, and
previously served on the Board of Directors for Tate County Economic Development Foundation. When he’s not working, he enjoys time with his family and friends, being outdoors, watching sports and learning about history.
He is married to the former Jill Anthony, and the couple has three children−Ford, John Brantley and Annie.

Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Entertainment Industry Studies program held their first masterclass with industry professional, Jason Gillespie, on Sept. 24 at Ranger Records, the college’s first-ever recording studio.
Ranger Records opened in the Spring of 2024 and is located in Northwest’s Heindl Center for the Performing Arts instructional wing. Last Fall, the Fine Arts Department held a naming competition to come up with the name for the recording studio. Grayson Cruley of Coldwater, a sophomore studying Entertainment Industry Studies, won the honor for “Ranger Records.”
The idea of a studio came from Jeff Triplett, who at the time was serving as district director of Fine Arts Instruction in Spring of 2023 and is now coordinator for the program. The goal of the studio is to one day be open for the public, but currently it’s available only for music students to develop their skills. This semester, one of Triplett’s classes has been using the studio to learn how to mix and work through the studio. “There’s no compromises on quality,” Triplett said.
The studio itself is equipped with industry standard gear and built to meet the standards of today’s modern studios. Triplett said it was important to him that the studio be equipped with everything that students will need or would use when they get a job. In some cases, Triplett noted, this equipment might be nicer than what they will use in studios throughout their career.
The Entertainment Industry Studies (EIS) program is designed to help students prepare for a variety of roles in the music industry and requires them to have 20 hours in the studio. “While we cannot separate creativity and artistry from these programs, the main intent is to train

students on technology for use inside the studio, which is the main focus for the Northwest EIS program,” said Triplett. “This is typical for the first two years of fouryear programs at area universities.”
As part of this, Gillespie was the first of 4-6 masterclass guests this year. The format of these classes is a oneday recording session featuring student and outside artists followed by a day-long masterclass to focus on editing, mixing, and post-production.
“Our guests will always be in charge of the session just as they would be in their daily environment, with students helping and observing,” said Triplett. “All these sessions will reinforce things being taught in our classes, plus introduce new and innovating things happening in the industry.”
Gillespie is a born and raised Memphian. Since graduating from the University of Memphis in 2005, he has been making his mark on professional music and entertainment being a part of MTV’s “Truelife,” movie
soundtracks, Grammy-nominated recordings, and an Emmy-winning TV PSA.
Triplett said he hopes as more opportunities arise in the program, more students will become interested particularly in the Entertainment Industries pathway.
