Dragon Boat champions donate winnings to charity ¢¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER

A

s the winning team of the 2015 Dragon Boat Festival, The School of Artillery had the opportunity to donate their race entry fee of R5000 to a charity organisation of their choosing. This team decided to donate this amount to North West Mental Health (NWMH), a non-profit organisation who will be using the funds towards one of their many community upliftment projects.

The Mayor of Potchefstroom, Honourable Kgotso Khumalo has also vowed to double the amount of R 5000 donated to North West Mental Health, which will be donated to the organisation in the near future.

The Dragon Boat Festival, which is hosted annually by The Rotary Club of Potchefstroom Mooi to promote awareness for cancer and to raise funds in support of credible charities, saw 16 teams competing at their event in 2015.

The final race saw the teams from Remax and The School of Artillery going head-to-head with the champions, The School of Artillery, taking home the winning trophy, the spirit cup as well as the opportunity to donate their entry fee to a good cause.

The Festival was a momentous success and the Rotarians are already planning for this year’s Dragon Boat Festival that will be taking place on 22 October 2016.

Boys’ High learners take on Europe! ¢¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER

A

fortunate group of young men from The Potchefstroom High School for Boys had the remarkable opportunity to visit Italy, Austria and Germany while embarking on an educational tour during the March/April recess period. They visited many historical sites, museums, and galleries where they experienced the rich history and cultural diversity of these prominent European countries.

The boys were accompanied by PBHS educators Madri van Wyk, Beverly Johnson, and Emmerentia Jooste as well as Emma Howell of Bargain Tours who had helped in arranging the trip.

In Germany, they toured Munich, the capital of the German state of Bavaria north of the Bavarian Alps and a centre of art, technology, finance and education. The group explored this innovation hub and were captivated by the way the city operates.

They also visited the medieval town of Dachau as well as Rothenberg and Würzburg. Dachau offered a grim look back in time as the group visited the Dachau Konzentrationslager (concentration camp), the first Nazi concentration camp opened in Germany. In Würzburg they visited the site of the Würzburg Witch Trials (1626 – 1631), one of the biggest mass trials and mass executions seen in Europe during the Thirty Years War. On a more magical note, the boys also travelled to The Neuschwanstein Castle as well as The Herrenchiemsee Castle, both commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria. The Neuschwanstein Castle has appeared in several acclaimed films and was also the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, now famed for being the ‘Walt Disney Castle’.

A sure highlight during their time in Germany was seeing the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart where the boys could

spend some time with some ‘toys’. They discovered the rich history behind the dynamic automobile brand and also had a viewing of the Hall of Fame where cars previously owned by The Pope, Frank Sinatra, and Princess Diana are housed.

As boys don’t necessarily want to spend all their time walking around art galleries and museums, they enjoyed a day at the Erlebnispark Tripsdrill Theme Park, home to the largest wooden roller coaster in the world. The boys were enthralled by over 100 themed attractions and the authenticity depicting Swabia in the 1880s. Apart from the wooden roller coaster, a few braved the ‘Karacho’ – a Gerstlauer steel rollercoaster that is seen defying gravity as it accelerates to 100km/h in just 1.6 seconds.

In Austria, they explored Innsbruck (Inn Bridge), an internationally renowned winter sports centre that had hosted several Olympic events. They travelled on a hybrid railway and boarded several cable cars,

giving them a spectacular view of the city and surrounding ski area. For many of these boys, this was also their first time seeing snow! While staying at a youth resort, the boys had the pleasure of meeting teenagers from around the world, sharing their experiences and culture with them.

In Italy, the group saw the magnificent cities of Venice, Verona, and Trento. Visiting Venice was a real treat as it is celebrated for its rich history of art and architecture. The boys witnessed the astonishing medieval and renaissance architecture and even had a class in Venetian glass making. In Verona, home to Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, they visited Juliet’s house and also touched Juliet’s right breast (on a statue of course!) which is said to bring good luck.

“The learners had a wonderful time, their minds were broadened and they came back with many great stories and experiences to share with their friends and families,” expressed Madri van Wyk, educator at PBHS.

St Mary’s Anglican Church restores antique Victorian pipe organ ¢¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER

T

he venerable architectural marvel that is the St Mary’s Anglican Church is currently underway with the remarkable undertaking of restoring a valuable piece of history – an original 15 rank Victorian Foster and Andrews Pipe Organ. As this parish is celebrating its 150th year in 2016 it is quite fitting to have purchased an organ dating from the same period in which St Mary’s was erected, but the tale of this organ goes far deeper than just that of a gift of celebration.

The Church had been wanting to upgrade their 2 Rank Ganser Pipe Organ for a time.

The Church organist, Dr. Gerrit Jordaan, woke up one morning with the sudden desire to check his computer. As Dr. Jordaan was logging on to the system, he noticed an advert

on E-Bay. It was an advert for a 15 rank organ for just £3000. Knowing that the Church had been wanting to replace its 2 rank Ganser pipe organ, he immediately took note of the ad. This valuable instrument, which had previously been dismantled by a crew of inexperienced workmen from a Church in East Sheen, London, was to be sent to the scrapyard. Fortunately, in 2013, it was rescued by a Mr. Graham Searle of Bristol who could not comprehend such a valuable piece of history just being tossed to the curb and used as scrap metal. The instrument was of a monumental size and so Mr. Searle had to store it in various storage spaces in Bristol before placing his ad on E-Bay in June 2014.

Knowing that such an opportunity doesn’t present itself often, Dr. Jordaan immediately placed a bid on the organ with the idea for it to be used in the St Mary’s Anglican

the prospect of a new organ. The Rector of the parish, Rev Jacques Pieterse also started doubting whether purchasing the organ for the Church was a good idea as he could not allow his congregation to make such a huge financial commitment should it be a mistake.

After praying on the matter, he came across a verse mentioning old bones and breathing new life into them, quite fitting as the organ is a wind instrument and was in much need of having ‘new life’ breathed into it. “I instantly felt the urge to read Ezekiel 37 and at that moment I knew that God would resurrect this organ,” explains Rev Jacques. The response from the congregation, as well as the community, was overwhelming, and it has since been seen uniting the congregation and bringing much joy and publicity to the Church, one of the oldest English-speaking congregations in the country.

The beautiful Victorian facade pipes will soon start their transition and are to be repainted and stenciled in their original pattern.

Much effort and attention to detail will go into the process to ensure that this antique instrument is restored as close as possible to its original state in colours including ruby red, gold, gunmetal blue, light grey and dark burgundy for the borders. “Strangely enough, these colors are reflected in the stained glass window of “Jesus the Good Shepherd” adjacent to where the organ will rest,” says Rev Jacques. Artists were approached for this task, one of which a very well known Potchefstroom artist, and will be rendering their services to the project.

“Alec Longman from Cooper Gill and Tomkins organ builders is keeping a close watch on the renovation process and under his supervision has allowed the congregation St Mary’s and the rest of Potchefstroom community to do their bit. This Project does not include just St Mary’s Anglican Church, but also other denominations. Indeed, the whole of the community, the North West, and South Africa, even churches abroad have taken note,” says Rev Jacques Pieterse.

St Mary’s continues to appeal for financial assistance and any amount will be warmly welcomed! To date an amount of R570,000.00 has been raised, this includes a generous donation from the Annelie Rupert foundation. Between R500,000.00 and R600,000.00 still needs to be raised. Currently, the economic climate in South Africa has left much to be desired, and with no real end in sight, many small businesses are suffering. Renowned warrior obstacle course champion Hannekè Dannhauser, along with fellow business partners Bronwen and Ryno Verster, are excited to be launching a functional obstacle training facility in Potchefstroom. The BLACK OPS™ Fitness centre will function as a combination training facility with warrior-style obstacle courses and functional obstacle training. The training will focus on functional strength, fitness, discipline, nutrition and achievement. The BLACK OPS™ Fitness centre will have indoor as well as outdoor training facilities and will also offer basic technique training.

Monday 2 February at 10:00 and will also be hosting an opening event where teams of four can enter in a relay-styled obstacle course race. The team racing will consist of these four athletes racing in relay format on a five-leg course with each targeting a key discipline of OCR (Obstacle Course Racing): speed, strength, endurance, technique and teamwork.

• The FNB NWU-Pukke beat FNB Maties 7-6 in the 2016 Varsity Cup final presented by Steinhoff International after an 89th minute try by flanker, Marno Redelinghuys.

I

n arguably one of the tightest rugby finals ever witnessed in South African rugby, FNB Pukke spent 12 minutes on the FNB Maties line, with time running far over the 80-minute mark. FNB Pukke were rewarded nine penalties in that period, with Chris Smith and Remu Malan both being yellowcarded in that time as well.

The Severe pressure eventually led to the FNB

Maties’ wall breaking and they will be blaming themselves after they failed to use numerous chances in FNB Pukke’s half to score tries of their own.

In the end, FNB Pukke’s relentless pressure told, as they crossed the line to secure their first Varsity Cup title in the competition’s nine-year history, winning 7-6.

Hannekè - Ultimate IMPI Warrior

Hannekè Dannhauser competed at The 2016 IMPI Festival that took place at Lievland Wine Estate in the Western Cape on Sunday 10 April.

Hannekè came in first place and was crowned the ultimate IMPI Warrior in the women’s Impi Elite Challenge. This Challenge was an adventure of the mind and

body and consisted of a combination of intensive running and +- 26 unique obstacle courses spread over 20km of hills, mud, water, walls, ropes, and fire.

Hannekè will be competing again this weekend, 16 – 17 April, at The Grind Obstacle Course Relay which is taking place at the Hillcrest Quarry.

Hannekè celebrating her win at the 2016 IMPI Festival along with her husband Dries Dannhauser.
