“ThisisAmerica:abrilliantdiversity,spreadlikestars,likeathousandpointsoflight,inabroad andpeacefulsky.”- George H. W. Bush
The greatest experiment in the history of the world was the birth of the United States of America. A nation born from revolution and diversity, America’s heartbeat comes from the melting pot of cultures and ideas. But the unalienable rights that were designed for all of America’s citizens started wars and fought battles both in our communities and as a nation at large. Sown over the course of our nation’s history, division and hatred against one another over diIerences of race, ideas, political beliefs, and everything in between is at a boiling point. There are those who may say America is equal, fair, and just, but today’s current events tell another story.
Between each selection, students will share excerpts of Langston Hughes’ LetAmericaBe AmericaAgainand Emma Lazarus’ TheNewColossusthat help influence and shape the arc of our program. Beginning with Johnson’s arrangement of Hard Times, Stephen Foster’s 1854 tune rings true to humanity’s struggles today. Johnson’s treatment of each verse as the musical clamor increases elucidates the sublime melodic writing against the troublesome harmonic context seeking refuge through the call: “Oh, Hard Times, come again no more.” Caroline Shaw’s Her beacon-hand beckons from ToTheHandspersonally reflects on TheNewColossustext while describing a sonic world where refuge isn’t just an act of all humanity, but a deeply personal one. A trio of trebles highlights the fortuitous Mother of Exiles while the tenors and basses illustrate the “tempest-tossed” nature of the narrator struggling to find refuge.
The cornerstone of our program, Joel Thompson’s America Will Be showcases the two poems featured and uses 11 diIerent languages to highlight the ethnic diversity and artistic unity of America’s people. Thompson’s program note says: “…the piece aims to make plain how far we are from the ideals we’ve set for ourselves, but it also clings to the hope that we will one day achieve them.” The final selection is Make Them Hear You from RagtimetheMusicalwhere the undertones of diversion run rampant, but the overall message is most important: “make them hear you.” We have a responsibility to speak justice into action through our words – may our stories continue to inspire everyone to live for justice for all.
Tonight’s program reflects on what America is, was, and is yet to be. It is a reflection of our division turning to unity that is needed to create what America will be. Through the synthesis of our program and the voices of Hughes and Lazarus, we can inherently connect to the true rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and strive to create an America that will be for all its citizens.

Hard Times
Let us pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears
While we all sup sorrow with the poor.
There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears; Oh Hard Times, come again no more.
‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary.
Hard Times, Hard Times, come again no more.
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door, Oh Hard Times, come again no more.
While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door;
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say, Oh Hard Times, come again no more.
‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary.
Hard Times, Hard Times come again no more.
There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears; Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.
There’s a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away
With a worn heart whose better days are o’er.
Though her voice would be merry ‘tis sighing all the day Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.
‘Tis a sigh that is wafted around the troubled wave
‘Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore.
‘Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave, Oh Hard Times, come again no more.
It’s the song, the sigh of the weary.
Hard Times, Hard Times, come again no more.
There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears…

Make Them Hear You Lyrics by
Lynn Ahrens
Go out and tell our story. Let it echo far and wide. Make them hear you. Make them hear you. How justice was our battle and how justice was denied. Make them hear you. Make them hear you.
And say to those who blame us for the way we chose to fight that sometimes there are battles which are more than black or white. And I could not put down my sword when justice was my right. Make them hear you. Make them hear you…
Go out and and tell our story to your daughters and your sons. Make them hear you. Make them hear you.
And tell them, in our struggle, we were not the only ones. Make them hear you. Make them hear you.
Your sword can be a sermon or the power of the pen.
Teach ev’ry child to raise his voice and then, my brothers, then will justice be demanded by ten million righteous men. Make them hear you. When they hear you.
I’ll be near you again.
