This compilation reflects extensive private financial support for the university and some of the projects and programs that are enhanced by that funding. This information is being provided during a time of unprecedented external assistance from alumni and friends of Northwestern. Dear Alumni and Supporters, It has been a true blessing to work at Northwestern for the past 16 years. I have been given the challenge and responsibility of raising external funds for the NSU Foundation to support NSU and the students we serve. It’s been an honor. When you read this Annual Report, you will find it evident that your contributions are being used wisely to impact our students, assist our faculty & staff, to serve this wonderful community, and engage alumni proudly. This report is about more than that. It is about you, our donors, who make the conscious decision to invest in NSU and its mission.

It’s about the thousands of alumni and investors who support NSU in the capacity in which they have been blessed. It’s about thanking those who have never stopped giving, even when they opposed a decision. It’s about giving a student an opportunity to accomplish something that he or she only dreamed possible. It’s about connecting our donors’ passions with the needs of our faculty, so they can continue to give our students the best instruction possible. It’s about a young man who grew up so poor that being employed while in school meant the difference between staying enrolled or dropping out. That student was so appreciative that he later named a professorship after the men who gave him a job. It’s about the alumna who told me, “I graduated in leadership, because NSU helped me grow into the person I always wanted to be.” It’s about committees working together to achieve ambitious goals. It’s about the staff who works tirelessly to set NSU apart from other universities, and make no excuses as to why that can’t happen. It’s about the historical town of Natchitoches and its small business owners, who not only understand the impact our university has on the community, they lift us up on their shoulders. It’s about a Board of Directors who continue to challenge our staff, as well as themselves, not to be satisfied with “the way we’ve always done it.” It’s about a development team who isn’t interested in who gets the credit, yet is very focused on what’s best for Northwestern State and its future. An active donor told me, “It’s amazing what a group of people can do if no one is concerned with who gets the credit.” It’s about a faculty member who didn’t graduate from NSU, yet will leave his entire estate to his love, Northwestern State University. This report is about you, our donor. Thank you for giving back and remembering your alma mater. Congratulations to each of you. You made this record breaking year happen! I “learned”“giving” from my mother and father who were residents of Natchitoches for 65 years. They always had money to give, even though they did not have a great deal of money. I have always embraced the axiom attributed to Winston Churchill who said: “You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give.” There are two elements of giving. The first is the “discipline of giving,” which is a decision to give, even when your gift may be monetarily small at a time when you don’t have much to give. The second is the “gift of giving,” which is the joy and delight in giving. The gift of giving typically follows the learning of the discipline and most often happens when your resources are greater. The gift of giving is driven by the gratitude one has for the blessings of life. There is no other way to express gratitude than in giving. Giving is the payment for the debt we owe to all who have contributed to our lives. It is what Paul said in Romans 13:8, “Owe no man anything but a debt of love.” It will take a lifetime of the discipline and gift of giving to satisfy our debt. Endowed Chairs A gift of $600,000 is matched by $400,000 from the Louisiana Board of Regents Support Fund to create a $1 million endowment. Interest generated by the endowment is used to support the work of a nationally recognized authority or scholar in a specific academic area. These scholars help attract outstanding students and enhance the academic reputation of the university.

2003 Erbon and Marie Wise Endowed Chair in Journalism

Maj. Gen. Erbon W. Wise was an author and publisher of several weekly and daily newspapers in Louisiana and Texas. He served 27 years in the U.S. Army Air Force, the U.S. Selective Service System, U.S. Army Reserves and the Louisiana National Guard. Wise was Adjutant General and State Director of the Selective Service System, Civil Defense and the Office of Emergency Preparedness. Wise and his wife Marie set up the first endowed chair at Northwestern.

2005 Melba Law Steeg Endowed Chair in Education

Melba Law Steeg worked tirelessly as a business and civic leader in the New Orleans Area. By being the first woman on many of the boards and commissions on which she served, Steeg provided many opportunities for women. Steeg worked with religious, artistic, educational, medical and business groups to improve the quality of life in her community. An endowed chair in educational leadership was established at NSU in her honor.

2006 Charles Ragus Founder of Advocare, Family Endowed Chair in Business

Charlie Ragus was a successful businessman, building AdvoCare into one of the Dallas area’s fastest growing companies. The company was founded because of Ragus’ concerns about the health of others. A member of the football team at Northwestern, Ragus played with the Kansas City Chiefs. The first endowed chair in the NSU School of Business was named in his honor.

Professorships A gift of $60,000 is matched by $40,000 from the Board of Regents Support Fund to create a $100,000 endowment. Northwestern faculty members can use interest generated by the endowment to conduct research which they bring back to the classrooms to enhance instruction. Endowed professorships help retain and attract excellent faculty members. These professorships can be rotated within academic colleges or departments to strengthen the entire academic program at the university. Our History On May 20, 1960, 27 individuals organized themselves into a nonprofit corporation as defined in the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950, and signed the Articles of Incorporation creating the Northwestern State University Foundation. My whole family attended Northwestern State University and I am so privileged to be able to work in this capacity at my alma mater.
