Last month saw our first photography competition… The aim of the game? To send us an image that sums up North Wales in November. We had some amazing entries – congratulations to winner John Jones whose photo of Ogwen Lake (right) scooped first place – and to the runners up who perfectly captured North Wales at this beautiful time of year… Snowdonia National Park “I am fascinated by the diversity of landscapes that North Wales has to offer. From breathtaking coastlines, to beautiful mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and valleys – the opportunities to explore, adventure and dream are endless for a photographer.” Lana Tannir

@Lanatannirphoto

Llandudno Pier “This photo shows a calm beauty in the autumn season to an area of the North Wales coast that can be hard to capture in the busy summer months. I love to photograph North Wales, my home, as it had the ideal balance of mountainous peaks and dramatic coastlines, all of which absorb and reflect the changing seasons perfectly.” Daniel Hill

@hill2k

Conwy Castle “This image is very special because all the elements to create it had to be right: weather, tide, time of day and, to me, it epitomises what North Wales is all about. I am very proud and lucky to live here.” Steve Morris

@stevemorris2503

Caernarfon Castle “I love how the castle stands so proud against the harbour, and the diversity of scenery in North Wales, be it mountains, castles, or seascapes cannot be beaten for photography.” Tanya Liepins

@CapturedMoments_Tanyali

Château Rhianfa “From where I took the photo the Château was perfectly framed by the lush foliage, and with the sun burst through the hanging branches I thought It would make a fitting photograph of such a beautiful building.” John Eastham

@johnmephoto

Penmon Lighthouse “After years of backpacking the globe, my appreciation for Wales’s beautiful landscape has risen incredibly. The thought that we live amongst these stunning locations, fills me with so much pride. As a photographer with such subjects to capture, there’s nowhere else I need to be.” Nathan Roberts

Lest we

forget This month, as the country falls silent to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice and the end of the First World War, Adrian Hughes takes a look at how North Wales contributed to the war effort.

The First World War, the war to end all wars, began on 4th August 1914. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, at the end of June triggered a four-week diplomatic crisis in which a complex network of political alliances across Europe drew Russia and Germany to the brink of war. When Germany invaded neutral Belgium on 4th August, Britain and the Empire came to Belgium’s aid, committing to a Treaty signed in 1839. On the day war was declared thousands of troops of the York and Durham Brigade were in the area beginning a two-week camp. At

THE GATEWAY TO PARADISE Bardsey Island might not be to everyone’s taste – but it certainly ticks all the boxes for author Stephen Gregory…

One of the many mind-boggling things about us human beings is how utterly different we all are, in the things we like and don’t like. I had a friend who took me, one night, to a hot and steamy cellar packed with a hundred hot and steamy people - to a Siouxsie and the Banshees concert. He was in paradise. His face glistened with tears of joy. Me, I endured two hours of misery. A few other things we might agree to disagree about? Black pudding? Mr Bean? Bull-fighting? Brexit? The Welsh name is Ynys Enlli, the island of the currents, and it’s the swirling tides which have kept Bardsey so remote. Some people think its English name refers to the many bards – or poets – numbered among the pilgrims. Others have suggested that it’s named after a Viking chieftain called Barda, who landed on its shores.

COME ON BABY, LIGHT MY FIRE Facebook users will be acquainted with Chris “Foodgasm” Roberts, the amateur chef who’s amassed a cult-like following through his banterous videos. To celebrate the première of Bwyd Epic Chris (Chris’s Epic Food) on 2nd November, Lowri Llewelyn sat down with one of Wales’s most infamous social media personalities...

“Dad always had birds hanging in the garage during pheasant season, and I was forever gutting fish,” Chris says of his childhood. “My mates watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – I watched Keith Floyd.” Throughout Chris’s teens, his father would visit Patagonia to fish and live with the local gauchos – and just like our Welsh ancestors who emigrated to the settlements in 1865, he embraced the asado way of life. Translated, asado means ‘’roast’’, referring to the South American method of cooking over fire and smoke. Simplicity is key; using only fresh ingredients, he learned to “pimp up his meat – gaucho style!” As his professional golfing career took him all over the world, Chris’s interest in cooking waned. His father died of cancer five years ago, and after retiring from golf he became a support worker for people with learning difficulties. Cooking meals from scratch, the process of sharing skills with those he supported was incredibly fulfilling. “You can’t wrap people in cotton wool. Cooking promotes independence and increases self-esteem. We’ve cooked on the banks of the Menai, in the park, the back garden... They love it.” This love of teaching stirred something inside Chris, who began sharing videos of recipes on social media two years

NWM 2018 Page 59

ago. It was during this time he found himself watching Chef’s Table, which tells the story of Argentine chef Francis Mallmann and the asado method he favours. As the memories came flooding back, realisation dawned that these were the methods Chris’s father had told him about. “From that moment, everything clicked.”

Chris insists quality meat needn’t be expensive. “When you have a relationship with your butcher, they look after you.

Inspired, in summer 2017 he hosted his own festival –

With infectious charisma, Chris gently educates about the importance of purchasing sustainable meat – so much so that even vegetarian Cerys Matthews of Catatonia wasn’t immune to his charms! Working in partnership with Meat Promotion Wales, he was invited by the Cool Cymru queen herself to cater for The Good Life Experience, which celebrates culture, food and the great outdoors. And Cerys isn’t his only celebrity fan. “Larry and George Lamb featured me in their series, Britain by Bike. I went round to Larry’s caravan the other night for dinner.” It was a summer of spreading the Welsh Lamb love for Chris. Alongside appearing at the Royal Welsh and BBC Countryfile Live, he’s also been working on something special for foodies to sink their teeth into – his very own series, airing on S4C

HOMES & INTERIORS NWM 2018 Page 71

Understanding the North Wales property market like no-one else Our experience in delivering quality homes across North Wales spans over 30 years. This means we know a thing or two about the local housing market and it's never been a more exciting time to be a developer in the region. It's a little over a year since we welcomed our first residents at Erddig Place in Wrexham and when we released for sale the final ten townhouses there in August of this year, six were reserved within the first hour – and that's during the summer when people assume interest in the property market drops off! What this shows us is just how desperately needed new homes are in the area. Ever since we first announced our intention to develop on the former Brothers Industries site it's been the same and we've had interested purchasers regularly enquiring as to the availability of our properties. First time buyers have been particularly interested in Erddig Place. The open plan layout and spacious bedrooms of the two and three-bedroom townhouses there appeals to them as they seek flexible accommodation that will adapt as their needs develop. Of course, the fact that they're priced from just £132, 995 with Help to Buy Wales also available, makes these homes a truly affordable first step on the property ladder.

Meanwhile, construction on our Bron Y Castell development in Abergele commenced in March and interest here has also been strong ever since. Indeed, almost a third of the properties have already been snapped up and we're yet to launch the showhomes! The 156 new homes that we're building there on land previously ear-marked for the North Wales Business Park, include a fabulous range of two-bedroom mews style homes, three-bedroom semi and detached properties, and four-bedroom family homes. They, therefore, appeal to a wide range of purchasers and like Erddig Place in Wrexham, we experienced no slow down in interest over the summer. The success we've enjoyed at our North Wales developments isn't, however, just down to local market demand although that obviously is a significant contributory factor. We believe that as a housebuilder with our roots firmly based in the area, we're ideally placed to truly understand the needs of local people and the standards that they demand. We're mindful of creating homes of both quality and beauty that offer the features required by today's purchasers, whilst remaining affordable. What's more, we have ambitious targets to increase our presence across North Wales. We already have a number of new sites in the pipeline and will work to ensure that we develop a variety of homes across developments of differing sizes so that the needs of all those wishing to live in the region are met.

There are a million and one advantages to buying a newbuild home but, says Kate Hamilton, buying one in North Wales could be the biggest advantage of them all…

OK, I admit, I’m slighty biased when I say that North Wales is perhaps the best place to live in the UK – or am I? So there are numerous other places that offer stunning views. There are others that offer great local produce, along with a vibrant wining and dining scene. There are even others that offer mountain ranges, and great outdoor activities – although not the world-firsts that we have had! So what’s so special about living in North Wales I hear you cry? Well, the peace and quiet for one – most places that Macbryde Homes’ Bron Y Castell development in Abergele boasts views of Gwrych Castle

offer this standard of living are literally teaming with people. And, secondly, the affordability of North Wales is simply staggering when you consider the quality of life that comes with a North Walian postcode. And, in order to get even better value for money, you could do a lot worse than purchasing a new-build home. New homes come with a ten year guarantee as standard – meaning that

Transformers Moduleo has introduced five woodand two stone-effect flooring designs. The extension of Moduleo’s Select and Transform collections comes in response to demand from customers looking for natural-effect flooring, without the associated upkeep of the real materials. New designs for Moduleo Select are Brio Oak, a woodeffect flooring in five different cooltoned colourways and Venetian Stone tiles in four shades. “The popularity of luxury vinyl flooring has increased significantly as consumers are looking for flooring that is beautifully designed and can withstand the pressures of day-to-day life,” explained MD David Bigland. “We always want to ensure we have a comprehensive and robust product offering that allows our customers to find the perfect flooring for them. These additions to our portfolio provide even more options and we’re excited to bring them to market later this year.” www.moduleo.co.uk

Rise and shine Cosentino has launched its new Stonika worksurface collection, comprising of four ultra-realistic, high shine designs inspired by coveted natural stones. THE

wedding planner

It’s the biggest day of your lives and the last thing you want to be doing on the day itself is running around chasing after suppliers, making sure they set up in the areas allocated to them, keeping a track on timings throughout the day, answering any queries from suppliers and ushering guests around your venue to name a few. And you definitely don’t want to be the one who announces your arrival as the new couple, before you all sit down for your wedding breakfast!

Image courtesy of BrightSidePhotography.co.uk

Hiring a wedding planner is the perfect addition to your wedding day, as they are there to take away all the stresses and strains leading up to the big day and on the day itself. As a wedding planner myself, I take full responsibility for every detail of the day, so each couple I work with can relax knowing all they need to do is focus on enjoying every moment of their day. I had the pleasure of organising a stunning wedding, for a beautiful couple, Laura and Jonny, back in August and I’m sure they won’t mind me sharing a couple of tips I gave them leading up to their big day… J When it comes to looking at your seating plan use a large piece of A3 plain paper, draw on your room layout/tables in pen and then use the small page marker sticky notes to write down the name of each guest. This will then allow you to move guests around much more easily and freely before you decide on the final table plan. A word of warning, you’ll be making changes right up until the last second, so make sure you find out the latest date you need to submit your table plan to the person creating it for you. J Some couples will look back on the day and remember how quickly it passed by, although full of happy memories they can’t remember spending time alone with each other. Which is why on Laura and Jonny’s day I whisked them away from all their guests to spend 15 minutes alone together in the bridal cottage, without anyone including myself interrupting them. If you know Laura, she’ll tell you how much they appreciated those 15 minutes together.

Get planning! 4th November 2018 1pm – 5pm Tyn Dwr Hall, Llangollen, Wedding open day 4th November 2018 12pm – 3pm The Valley Hotel, Valley, Wedding Fayre 7th November 2018 5pm – 8pm Tyn Dwr Hall, Llangollen, Wedding open evening 7th November 2018 5pm – 8pm Hallmark Hotel Llyndir Hall, Rossett, Wedding showcase evening 17th November 2018 12pm – 4pm Portmeirion, Penrhyndeudraeth, Wedding Fair 18th November 2018 11am – 4pm The Trearddur Bay Hotel, Holyhead, Wedding Fayre 18th November 2018 12pm- 3pm Chateau Rhianfa, Menai Bridge Wedding Fair

J Leading up to the wedding I also reminded Laura on many occasions not to sweat the small stuff. Sometimes you can be so wrapped up in every detail that it becomes too much and adds to your stresses, rather than helping you to relax. Everything came together perfectly on their day and they even had their VIP (Very Important Pet) with them to join the celebrations. Working with a wedding planner means you’re in the hands of a professional who will do anything

Small birds, such as tits and finches, form small flocks in autumn, roving the countryside in search of food, using their numbers to look out for predators such as Sparrowhawks. One bird doing well is the Goldfinch, with its red head and yellow wing-bars. Listen for their tinkly calls, especially where plants are shedding seeds. Teasels are a particular favourite; they produce tiny black seeds that few other animals can access, but the Goldfinch’s slim bill is delicate enough to squeeze between the Teasel’s spiny defences. STARS...

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com

November’s horoscopes brought to you by Russell Grant ARIES (March 21st-April 20th) Things are getting serious on the romantic front in early November. A supportive New Moon on the 7th makes it a great time to let down your defences with someone who has demonstrated their loyalty. On the 23rd, the Full Moon brings troubling news about a legal matter. It may be better to settle out of court or drop this fight altogether.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) The New Moon on the 7th is perfect for asking for a raise or landing a lucrative job. Instead of increasing your standard of living, put your excess income into a savings account, where it will protect you from financial uncertainty. On the 23rd, a Full Moon will create legal difficulties. It may be impossible to move forward with a business plan until you get official permission.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st) An exciting opportunity to team up with a highly creative person will arrive on or around the 7th. That’s when an intensifying New Moon prompts you to take on a partner. Whether you’re looking for love or want to form a business partnership, it’s time to make your move. The Full Moon on the 23rd could bring a challenge to your financial position. A contractor could deduct money for expenses or delays, making you very upset.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) The New Moon on the 7th invites you to undergo a makeover. Updating your hairstyle, getting a cosmetic procedure or revamping your wardrobe will lift your spirits. Don’t be surprised when you become a hot commodity on the romance market. On the 23rd, a bonus or royalty payment will be less than you expected. Trying to recoup more money will be an exercise in futility

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st) The New Moon on the 7th is ideal for landing a job or hiring help. If you’re looking for work, you’ll find a job that involves working on a commission basis. On the 23rd, the Full Moon tempts you to overhaul your look. Any changes you make should be temporary; as there is a good chance you won’t like the results. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) If you’re recovering from a bad breakup, it’s time to return to the dating game. The New Moon on the 7th will put you in the path of an attentive admirer who makes you excited to be alive. You share many of the same interests and values; a powerful physical chemistry is the cherry on this luscious cake. The Full Moon on the 23rd urges you to let go of an old grudge.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st) Spend the first half of November resting and relaxing. On the 7th, the New Moon will prompt you to withdraw from the party scene. Enjoying the peace and quiet of home will be therapeutic. Take this opportunity to read for pleasure, listen to music and spend time with your pets. The Full Moon on the 23rd puts strain on a close relationship. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th) The New Moon on the 7th is great for joining a sports team, political organisation or humanitarian group. Donating your time and energy to a meaningful cause will lift your spirits. You’re tired of going from home to work and back again. On the 23rd, the Full Moon will bring a health concern to your attention. Talk to a doctor about a nagging ache or pain.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd) A domestic matter will command your attention on or around the 7th, courtesy of the New Moon. If you’ve been looking for a place to live, you’ll find a lovely, secluded property close to a body of water. This will be a terrific investment. On the 23rd, you will be inspired to break ranks with a troubled organisation. You don’t want your reputation tarnished.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) An exciting career opportunity will arrive on the 7th, courtesy of the passionate New Moon. Being able to make money by doing work you love will be empowering. The Full Moon on the 23rd warns you against taking risks. Confessing a crush or making an investment will result in a big disappointment. Maintain the status quo during the second half of November.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Launching a blog or podcast on the 7th will attract fame and acclaim. That’s when the New Moon will showcase your communication abilities. Being able to share your ideas with an adoring public will be a good use of this talent. The Full Moon on the 23rd brings pressure on the career front. You’ll be asked to assume some unpleasant responsibilities.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) The New Moon on the 7th invites you to expand your horizons. Take this opportunity to earn an advanced degree, travel abroad or publish some work of your own. Venturing into unfamiliar territory will attract fame and acclaim. On the 23rd, family matters will weigh on your heart. Arguing about religion and politics with a relative creates stress.
