Primary Election

To say that I am glad 2019 is over, is an understatement! Being a mother of five boys has always had its adventures, but our youngest defiantly made the last six months of the year a real roller coaster. After being diagnosed and recovering from the ‘rare’ infection in his spine, he decides to fall during a basketball game and get a hairline fracture in his right wrist. I have jokingly told him I was going to wrap him in bubble wrap. He is fully healed now and finishing up the basketball season this next week. I still ask for prayers as he goes back to the doctor next month for a follow up on his spine. As for me and my foot, it’s all healed up. Having to stay off it and taking things slow was a real challenge, the worst part of it was facing the fact that I’m not as young as I used to be. It’s still a little tender at times, but I’m still going. 2020 has started off busy as usual. Along with all the school and community activities, Mother Nature has thrown in some wonderful weather for us. In true Texas form, we’ve gone from 70’s to snow in just a few days. I guess the saying “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it’ll change” has proven true. So, remember, when you find yourself not sure what’s going to happen ~ “Just wait 5 minutes and see if it changes”. I hope that everyone’s 2020 has started off good and continues to be all that you dreamed. God Bless…

It’s election time once again. Citizens of the nation are being encouraged to get out and vote and let your voice be heard! 2020 Jack County Youth Fair Approximately 190 youth from Bryson, Jacksboro, and Perrin gathered at the Jack County Fair Barn to show off their animals, ag mechanic projects, and creative art projects. This annual three day event saw the usual sun, rain, and even snow that we have become accustomed to. Saturdays sale brought in over $170,000 thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals from all around. Through this generosity, this year the Jack County Fair Association was able to give three $500 scholarships to a senior from each school. These receipents were: Clay McLemore ~ Perrin, Hailee Frie ~ Jacksboro, and Josh Leatherwood ~ Bryson. (pictured l-r) Clay McLemore, Hailee Frie, Josh Leatherwood

The 2020 UIL Spirit State Championships took place January 16-18, at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Approximately 460 students from schools all over Texas gathered for this high energy, loud and proud competition. This years event marks the second year that Spirit was an official UIL contest. These young women and men put in countless hours of training for an activity that some have not seen as an actual “sport”. For years cheerleaders have been thought of as just the pretty girls on the sidelines of the football field, but lots of schools are starting to see things different. And it’s not just the schools, it’s the students, parents, and fans of these athletes that are rallying behind and showing their love and support. We congratulate all the participants for their hard work and dedication and look forward to next year. This year marked number three for Jacksboro High School Cheerleaders to compete. In their first two years they finished 4th, but 2020 would prove to be a good year for this squad. For the first time, Jacksboro High School was named 3A UIL Spirit State Champions.

It was a big day in Tiger Nation for Coach Brannon Rodgers and the Tiger football team. Character and Integrity are key components that this coaching staff have worked hard to instill into the students at Jacksboro schools, not only on the field or court but also out in the community. Being recognized and receiving awards for winning are nice, but when it’s for your attitude and sportsmanship that’s a win not only for yourself and your coaches but your community as well. We are very proud of the respectful young men and women that represent Jacksboro ISD and this community. Jacksboro athletes started 2020 out being recognized for just this character and integrity. Coach Rodgers gathered the football team, coaches, Mr. Milam, and school board members to the field house for a special presentation. Larry Schupbach, President North Texas Football Officials, and Michael Frazier were on hand to present one award. Each year members from the North Texas Football Officials chapter recognize schools from the north Texas area by awarding two Sportsmanship Awards. This award is given to a small school (1A & 2A) and a large school (3A, 4A, & 5A). Teams are nominated during the last NTFO meeting by chapter members. The nominated teams are voted on and a winner is declared. This year the NTFO chapter is proud to recognize the Jacksboro High School Tigers as the winners of the 2019 Large School Sportsmanship Award. “Congratulations to Coach Brannon Rodgers l-r: Martha Salmon (JISD Board Member), Larry and the coaching staff for Pictured Schupbach (President NTFO), Coach Brannon Rodgers, Michael providing guidance and Frazier (NTFO Official), Kelly Mower (JISD Board Member), and Dwain Milam (JISD Superintendent). support for these young

men. The conduct that these young men exhibited on the football field is an example for all teams to follow. May the Tigers continue to enjoy success on the field and good luck next season!” North Texas Football Officials. Some criteria involved in the decision making include player interaction with opponents, teammates, coaches, and officials. Coach’s interaction with other coaches and officials. As well as the interaction from the fans in the stands. It is not just based on the varsity level players; officials also look at the junior varsity and middle school teams. “Winning is important, but sportsmanship is more important.” Larry Schupbach told the boys in his presentation. The NTFO chapter provides football officials for 22 11-man schools, 11 6-man schools, and youth football games in the Wichita Falls area. The NTFO provides officials for post season playoff games as well. 95 officials covered 689 football games consisting of varsity, sub-varsity, and youth football during the 2019 season.

For the second award of the day, Coach Rodgers presented the Burlsworth Character Award to senior Ty Rodgers. The Burlsworth Character Award has been given out in Arkansas High Schools for the past 11 years in recognition of outstanding character and sportsmanship and is now nationwide. The award honors the player who may or may not be a top athletic performer, but who represents the ideals and values that Brandon Burlsworth had:

to give 100 percent on the field and to stand as a moral example to his team. The hope of this award is to encourage the honoree to continue his path of excellence and inspire others to follow his lead. Jacksboro has had two other recipients of this award, Tyler Harmonson in 2018 and Reno Rollans in 2019.
