NORTH SYDNEY BOYS HIGH SCHOOL

Principal’s Address

Welcome to North Sydney Boys High School. For over a century, we’ve been dedicated to nurturing the talents and potential of our students.

North Sydney Boys High School is the top ranking High School for boys in NSW. We pride ourselves on a diverse curriculum and co-curricular programs that allow each boy to explore and develop his interests and strengths within a supportive and inclusive environment.

Our boys benefit from learning alongside likeminded peers, supported by expert teachers, a strong and cohesive school community, and most importantly, each other. We continue the proud tradition of providing a holistic education to our boys.

Our mission is simple: preparing young men for the future. And this is supported through the Falcon Code.

Camaraderie, Commitment, Compassion, Integrity, and Respect. These values are not just words; they’re a way of life at North Sydney Boys High School. In the classroom, our boys embody these values by making meaningful contributions to group work and encouraging their peers. They challenge themselves to persevere and improve, and they’re willing to learn from their mistakes.

It’s about teamwork, commitment, and doing everything with maximum effort and heart. Our boys display sportsmanship, honour the rules, and wear their uniforms with pride.

Our boys are kind to others, behave ethically, and are respectable members of the community. It’s all about proactively including peers and embracing differences.

Our state-of-the-art facilities, including our library, science labs and creative arts centre symbolise our unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation in boy’s education.

Our students are at the heart of everything we do. We create an environment where every boy feels safe, nurtured, and supported. Our school enjoys a strong, positive reputation in the community and our students are proud to be a North Sydney boy.

We’re more than just a school; we’re a community, a family, and a place where young men thrive. We look forward to welcoming your child into our community of excellence and innovation.

Curriculum

The curriculum offered at North Sydney Boys High School is carefully designed to meet the needs of gifted and talented boys. It is continually reviewed and improved to meet the ever changing needs of our students.

At North Sydney Boys we understand talented boys. Our boys have exceptional talents in a range of areas and this creates and demands a unique teaching and learning environment; one that promotes challenge and creativity.

As a school community, we aim to develop the gifts of each student, so he can realise his potential. We build on our students’ initiative, interests and learning needs and encourage them to persevere in their endeavours.

At North Sydney Boys, we offer a curriculum which is broad and taught in a method appropriate to gifted and talented students.

Bright students strive for and develop a deep knowledge of each subject. As our students typically progress through a syllabus faster, there is considerable opportunity to explore the subject area and pursue extension based activities.

Classes challenge and encourage higher order thinking and advanced problem solving. Our students thrive on such challenges and our teachers are accustomed to designing and

delivering their subject area in such a manner. For students seeking extra challenge, students in Years 9 and 10 have the opportunity to undertake HSC courses in Enterprise Computing.

Our students in Years 11 and 12 study English at the Advanced level. Extension English, Languages, Maths, History and Music are also offered in Years 11 and 12 for students seeking further challenge beyond the standard courses.

Outside of the classroom, students have a breadth of opportunity open to them through the enrichment programs offered in every subject. Competitions, challenges, workshops, camps, extension classes, performance showcases and Olympiad training all offer opportunity to further develop a boy’s understanding in a subject.

Creative and performing arts students have many opportunities at school and also enjoy the benefits of state education activities through the Department of Education’s Arts Unit, including ensembles and State Music and Drama camps.

We also offer co-curricular programs for students to explore their interests and develop their strengths. The co-curricular activities are designed for gifted and talented students.

‘We understand talented boys’

english

The study of English at North Sydney Boys High School is creative, exciting and intellectually inspiring. English from Stage 4 to Stage 6 includes the study of literature from a range of genres, forms and contexts with students studying classical and contemporary literature, visual texts and film. Through their study of English, students develop creative and critical thinking skills emerging as confident verbal and written communicators. Students are encouraged to experiment with, and test, their ideas and their expression. The study of English develops a love of literature and a deeper understanding of the world and our place in it. It should be challenging and enjoyable and encourage students to become lifelong learners and collaborators.

The English Faculty consists of a dedicated team who provide a positive, inclusive and challenging environment suited to the needs of students at North Sydney Boys High School. The faculty brings an enthusiasm for new and innovative pedagogical approaches combined with many years of experience to the classroom.

English is mandatory in NSW for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 with the complexity increasing throughout the Stages. In English students learn to engage with how meaning is shaped, conveyed and interpreted. In Year 11 and Year 12 at North Sydney Boys High School all students study the English Advanced course. Students may elect to study:

English Extension 1 (in Year 11)

English Extension 2 (in Year 12)

The English Faculty also runs debating and public speaking with our students entered into the Premier’s Debating Challenge and the Premier’s Speaking Competition. Debating and public speaking are also an integral part of the junior course of study and these skills are thus embedded into our Stage 4 and Stage 5 programs.

Mathematics

We encourage the boys to develop strong mathematical thinking so they can appreciate mathematics as an essential and relevant part of life. Through Inquiry, problem solving, reasoning and reflection, the boys undertake creative and challenging study. We offer courses and programs designed to meet the needs of each student. In the junior years all students study mathematics leading to stage 5.3 (previously known as Advanced). In Year 11 students’ study Mathematics Advanced or Mathematics Extension and in Year 12 they can choose to study Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 or Mathematics Extension 2.

At North Sydney Boys, Maths is different.

- We compact the program by teaching the Stage 4 content at a faster pace than in most schools.

- Time gained through compaction is used to provide students with a significant amount of extension and enrichment.

- Most topics are offered with supplementary extension and enrichment content - some mandatory, some optional.

Languages

Through the study of languages, students improve their literacy skills and develop their communication and interpersonal skills. They develop a sense of intercultural awareness and an understanding of the values of different cultures. There is also an increasing demand in the job market for bilingual and multilingual professionals.

At North Sydney boys we proudly offer five languages through to HSC level, one of the few New South Wales schools to do so. The languages offered are German, French, Indonesian, Japanese and Latin. In Year 7, the students study each of the five languages for eight weeks before deciding which language they will continue for their mandatory 100-hour study in Year 8. In the modern languages, students are taught to communicate through interacting, understanding and responding to written and aural texts and creating written and spoken texts. In Latin, students learn how to explore Roman society through their language. At HSC level, we offer the Continuers courses as well as the Extension course in all five languages, and we have a history of outstanding HSC results.

Resources used in the classroom include authentic online and printed texts, textbooks, online programs and YouTube videos as well as online vocabulary and grammar apps.

Students are extended and challenged through excursions and incursions as well as our popular language clubs and senior speaking tutors. Overseas excursions allow students to immerse themselves in both the language and culture. We have a long standing relationship with Kokusai Metropolitan High School in Japan and have also run excursions to New Caledonia and Europe.

HSIE

In today’s rapidly changing world, it is crucial for young minds to develop a deep understanding of the societies and environments they inhabit. At North Sydney Boys High School, the Human Society in its Environment (HSIE) Faculty is dedicated to nurturing this understanding in students. This faculty offers a diverse range of subjects that delve into the study of people, cultures, societies, and environments in different places and times. From the junior years, where students explore the fundamentals of Geography, History, and Commerce, to the senior years, where they can choose from a broader spectrum of subjects, such as Ancient History, Modern History, Geography, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Economics; the HSIE Faculty aims to empower students to become informed and engaged citizens who can contribute positively to their communities and the world.

The Foundation: Junior Years

In the junior years, the HSIE Faculty lays the foundation for students’ exploration of human society in its environment. This period is a vital stage in a student’s educational journey, as it introduces them to key concepts and critical thinking skills that are fundamental for the senior years and beyond.

History: Students study significant historical events, figures, and their consequences. They delve into ancient civilisations, world wars, and the rise of empires, developing a critical perspective on the past and its impact on the present.

Geography: Students explore topics like climate change, landforms, ecosystems, and the impact of human activity on the planet. They learn to analyse data, create maps, and draw connections between geography and various global issues, such as sustainability and resource management.

Commerce: Students explore topics like supply and demand, entrepreneurship, the stock market, and global trade. This subject equips them with essential financial literacy skills and an understanding of the business world, which are valuable in today’s interconnected economies.

History Elective: Students study dynamic topics such as Heroes and Villians, the history of Terrorism, the British Raj, Ancient Greece, myths, contemporary geopolitics, the history of film, assassinations and conspiracies.

Diversity in Senior Years

As students progress to senior years, the HSIE Faculty offers an array of subjects to choose from, depending on their interests and career aspirations. These subjects provide a deeper exploration of various aspects of human society in its environment.

Ancient History: This subject is a fascinating journey into the past, focusing on ancient civilisations like Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Students explore the cultural, political, and social aspects of these societies, gaining insights into the roots of contemporary civilisation.

Modern History: Modern History delves into more recent events and trends, including the World Wars, the Cold War, and the impact of revolutions. Students develop a deep understanding of the 20th century and its profound influence on the world today.

Legal Studies: Legal Studies equips students with knowledge of the legal system, civil rights, and justice. They explore topics like criminal law, human rights, and the functioning of legal institutions. This subject prepares students for careers in law and fosters a sense of justice and civic responsibility.

Business Studies: Business Studies is a practical subject that teaches students about the business world, entrepreneurship, marketing, and strategic planning. Students gain essential skills for pursuing careers in business, economics, and management.

Economics: Economics is the study of how societies allocate resources and make decisions about production, consumption, and distribution. Students explore topics like market structures, economic policy, and global economic issues, helping them grasp the complexities of the modern economy.

History Extension: Students extend their knowledge of the Modern and Ancient curriculum by considering historiography, the ways in which history is crafted and written. Along with case studies of historians from Herodotus to figures of the modern age such as Margaret Thatcher, students work on an independent research paper to reconstruct history.

Holistic Learning and Real-World Experiences

The HSIE faculty has designed a comprehensive excursion program that includes fieldwork and specialised site visits, providing students with hands-on experiences to enhance their learning. These excursions often align with the subjects being studied, allowing students to see theoretical concepts in action.

Additionally, a variety of extension activities and extracurricular opportunities are available for students who want to further expand their knowledge and skills in the HSIE field. These activities include academic competitions, debate clubs, and community service projects that encourage students to apply what they’ve learned to real-world scenarios.

Through a combination of classroom instruction, experiential learning, and extension activities, students are encouraged and well-prepared to think critically, analyse complex issues, and develop solutions to the challenges facing our world today with informed and engaged minds.

Pdhpe

All students study Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). The North Sydney Boys School community is committed to the students’ emotional, social and physical health and the study of PDHPE in Years 7 to 10 delivers and develops important skills and knowledge in this area.

We will advocate to serve as a liaison between students and the P&C itself to contribute to the continual development of school initiatives that will enhance students’ learning experience (including the uniform shop and canteen) and facilitate future parent or student needs. Furthermore, we wish to regularly communicate and gain feedback from parents, as well as welcome parents and community members to school events, and provide assistance where needed. We encourage all future members and contributors to actively engage in our initiatives as it will simultaneously develop your leadership skills whilst empowering you to contribute to the continual refinement of our school.

House captains

The House Captains, composed of sports enthusiasts, are committed to enhancing the physical and mental well-being of NSB students through engaging in sports activities.
