Robert Prevost, first American pope, takes name Leo XIV

Vatican City Robert Prevost has been elected the first pope from the United States in the history of the Catholic Church. The Chicagoborn missionary took the name Leo XIV. In his first words as Pope Francis’ successor, he emphasized peace, dialogue and missionary evangelization. Prevost had been a leading candidate despite a longstanding taboo against a U.S. pope. But he’s also a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop. He was elevated to the senior ranks of cardinals in January. The crowd in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers when his election was announced. Prevost is a graduate of Villanova University just outside of Philadelphia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1977.

The town sought retroactive approval for seven leases

Stanly News Journal staff

RALEIGH — The N.C. Local Government Commission has granted retroactive approval for a $360,000 lease entered into by the Town of Norwood to acquire seven police vehicles through Enterprise Fleet Management, Inc. The lease had not received the required LGC approval prior to execution, but the town worked with state officials to resolve the oversight and ensure compliance. The vehicles — already delivered and in service — include one Chevrolet Tahoe, one Chevrolet Silverado, four Dodge Chargers and one Ford F-150. Lease payments had begun before the issue was identified. Norwood staff contacted LGC officials, submitted the required application, and received formal approval at the commission’s May 6 meeting. According to the town, the lease was necessary to equip the police department

with safe and reliable vehicles essential for public safety operations and day-to-day service delivery. Debt service will be paid from General Fund revenue.

The LGC, chaired by State Treasurer Brad Briner, ensures financial oversight for local government borrowing and leasing. Norwood’s item was the only Stanly County matter approved at the Tuesday meeting that also included more than $1 billion in statewide bond and infrastructure financing.

Filming for “Sloan” is expected to start in June or July

NORWOOD — The Town Council unanimously approved a request from a Charlotte-based movie company to film on the sidewalks of the town this summer.

Faris Khaleeli submitted a request in writing to the town as a location scout on behalf of independent writer and filmmaker Michael Denny to film this June or July in downtown Norwood.

The short film will be called “Slone,” according to the letter, adding the movie will center around “a self-reliant, community-focused hero who works independently to protect and serve

CHARLES CURCIO / STANLY NEWS JOURNAL

those around him. This short film will be a proof of concept for a planned online streaming series.”

Khaleeli stated in the letter the production “will be modest in scale, involving fewer than 15 individuals, and will utilize only lighting equipment and be without large props, extensive gear, or disruptive setups.”

The letter further stated they did not anticipate a need for road or store closures while filming.

When asked by council member Keith Morgan about the purpose of the film, Mayor Linda Campbell reiterated the information in the letter, adding the project was Denny’s first.

“If the board is inclined to approve it, the only thing I would suggest is that we require that they provide proof of liability insurance and name the town (as) an additional insurer on the insurance just to protect the town … in case something happens,” Town Administrator Ray Allen said.

Campbell mentioned a previous film, noting residents Ray Keziah and Tim Franklin, among other locals, appeared in it called “Rookies: The Movie” about two rookie cops. It was filmed in 1999 and took a year to film in Norwood, Lake Tillery, Mount Gilead and Albemarle.

Mayor Pro Tem James Lilly moved to approve the filming project, subject to proof of liability insurance, seconded by Morgan.

Mom reunites

with 911 operator who helped deliver baby

Sarah Gianni unexpectedly went into labor

PITTSBORO — Reporters surrounded 911 telecommunicator Lorie Teague as she cradled Daisy Gianni, a bubbling, healthy 8-pound, 1-ounce baby girl who had popped into the world just two weeks prior, thanks to a bit of help from someone on the other end of the phone.

Teague was preparing to eat breakfast when an urgent early morning call came in to the Chatham County Emergency Operations Center. 911 operators never know what might be on the other end of the phone, but this wasn’t an incoming report of a car crash or a house fire. Instead, she professionally answered the trembling voice of Corinne Townsend, who said that her 36-year-old and very pregnant daughter, Sarah Gianni, had unexpectedly gone into labor.

“I started having contractions just after six that morning and was preparing to head to the hospital,” Gianni said. “I had just put the kids in the car when my water broke. My husband was already at work, but thankfully, my mom was there and called 911.”

Teague began talking both mothers through each step of the delivery and, crucially, helped Townsend stay relaxed as they delivered Daisy togeth-

er. She was born without incident at 6:56 a.m., before EMS arrived.

Two weeks later, Sarah and Lorie — those voices on each end of the phone — got to meet each other, and mom got to show off her new arrival to the woman whose calm, professional demeanor helped make it possible.

“It’s just a part of my job,” said Teague. “I love being able to help other people, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Daisy is the second baby she has helped deliver, said Teague, who worked with the Pittsboro Police Department and as a paramedic before joining the 911 center.

Since the 911 Center opened in its new location in September 2023, telecommunicators have assisted with the delivery of four babies.

“We have a ‘Tree of Life’ on our wall here at the 911 Center, so we can celebrate positive outcomes that our telecommunicators have assisted in critical moments such as baby deliveries and CPR saves,” said

Sarah Gianni and her two sons pose in front of the ‘Tree of Life’ with Lorie Teague holding Daisy, the baby she helped deliver over the phone.

Mike Reitz, Chatham County Emergency Communications Director. “It’s really special to show the Gianni family their pink leaf on the tree, which represents Daisy.”

Chatham County Emergency Communications is open to answer calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with 27 certified telecommunicators dispatching the county’s fire, EMS and law enforcement agencies — and acting as a lifeline both for those emergency responders and members of the public.

Adam Gaines, assistant communications director, says staffing is heaviest during the day when call volume is highest. And it’s not just Chatham County that they’re supporting.

When Hurricane Helene tore through the state, disabling emergency call centers in western North Carolina, Gaines’ operators started taking emergency calls from as far away as Yancey, Watauga and Madison counties. “We were getting nine calls a minute,” he said.

Trump asks SCOTUS for OK to end humanitarian parole for 500K people

A lower court kept legal protections in place for people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela

PRESIDENT DONALD Trump’s administration asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to allow it to end humanitarian parole for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from four countries.

The emergency appeal asks the justices to halt a lower-court order keeping in place legal protections for more than 500,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

The Republican administration argues that the decision wrongly intrudes on the Department of Homeland Security’s authority.

“The district court has nullified one of the administration’s most consequential immigration policy decisions,” Solicitor General John Sauer wrote.

The order from U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston blocked the Trump administration from putting an early end to the immigrants’ temporary legal status. Her ruling in mid-April came shortly before

their permits were due to be canceled, setting them up for potential deportation.

Talwani, who was appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama, said that immigrants in the program who are in the United States legally now face an option of “fleeing the country” or staying and “risk losing everything.” She said the government’s explanation for ending the program was “based on an incorrect reading of the law.”

The case is the latest in a string of emergency appeals the Trump administration has made to the Supreme Court, many of them related to immigration.

tion has also sought to dismantle policies from President Joe Biden’s Democratic administration that created new ways for people to live legally in the U.S., generally for two years with work authorization.

Biden used humanitarian parole more than any other president, employing a special presidential authority in effect since 1952. Beneficiaries included more than 500,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who flew to the United States with financial sponsors on two-year permits since late 2022, with authorization to work.

Advocates have called the Trump administration’s move to end the program “unprecedented” and argued that it violated federal rule-making.

Biden blames Harris’ loss in race for president on sexism, racism

He also rejected concerns about his age

NEW YORK — Former President Joe Biden says he’s responsible for Donald Trump’s victory last fall, but he attributes Kamala Harris’ loss, at least in part, to sexism and racism.

Biden, who left office in January, addressed the Democrats’ disastrous 2024 election, concerns about his age and Trump’s divisive leadership during a Thursday interview on ABC’s “The View.” The 82-year-old Democrat said he has intentionally avoided speaking out publicly until this week to give the Republican president more than 100 days in office without his interference, as is typically the tradition following a change in the White House.

Asked about the last election, Biden said he was surprised by the role that gender and race played in the contest.

Biden rejected concerns about his cognitive decline prompted by a disastrous debate performance last June. He also declined to criticize the Democratic leaders who privately pressed him to abandon his campaign.

“The only reason I got out of the race was because I didn’t want to have a divided Democratic Party,” he said, adding that the broader party didn’t buy into concerns about his age following the “terrible” debate performance “but the Democratic leadership and some of the very significant contributors did.”

Thursday’s appearance also marked Biden’s first joint interview with former first lady Jill Biden since leaving Washington. She rejected those who believe she created a protective cocoon around her husband while in office to protect him from scrutiny about his age.

“It was very hurtful especially from some of our so-called friends,” she said of the criticism.

House follows Trump’s lead to change Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

Washington, D.C.

Biden added, “I was in charge, and he won, so I take responsibility.”

Biden has largely stepped away from national politics since leaving the White House.

eration of leadership, although he acknowledged on Thursday that he has maintained regular contact with Harris and has offered his guidance on her political future.

“She’s got a difficult decision to make about what she’s going to do. I hope she stays engaged,” Biden said, declining to share his specific advice.

“I was with Joe day and night … and I did not create a cocoon around him,” she continued. “You saw him in the Oval Office. You saw him making speeches. He wasn’t hiding somewhere.” Meanwhile, the former president did not hold back when the conversation turned to Trump’s job performance.

“He’s had the worst 100 days any president has ever had,” Biden said.

The Republican-led House has passed a bill that would rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and direct federal agencies to update their documents and maps to incorporate the new name. President Donald Trump signed an executive order during his first day in office to rename the Gulf. House Republicans on Thursday showed their official support in a 211-206 vote. It’s unclear whether the Senate will go along. Democrats say the vote demonstrates Republicans aren’t focusing on the priorities of most Americans. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, a Trump ally.

Trump keeps 10% tariffs on UK but cuts taxes on British autos, steel, aluminum with trade deal

Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump has agreed to cut tariffs on British autos, steel and aluminum in a planned trade deal. But the Republican on Thursday played down the possibility of other nations receiving similarly favorable terms on his import taxes, which are roiling the global economy. The announcement provides a political victory for U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and a degree of validation for Trump’s claims his turbulent approach on trade may be able to rebalance the global economy on his preferred terms. Terms of the deal have yet to be completed so it can be signed. Trump says the agreement would lead to more beef and ethanol exports to the U.K.

White House proposes overhauling outdated U.S. air traffic control system in wake of crashes Washington, D.C. The Trump administration has proposed a major overhaul of the U.S. air traffic control system in the wake of recent deadly plane crashes and technical failures that have put a spotlight on the outdated network. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the plan calls for six new air traffic control centers, along with technology and communications upgrades at all of the nation’s air traffic facilities over the next three years. Officials want to add fiber, wireless and satellite technology at more than 4,600 locations, replace 600 radars and increase the number of airports with systems designed to reduce near misses on runways.

Soderbergh’s sleek and lean spy thriller “Black Bag” (streaming now on Peacock), stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as married British intelligence operatives whose agency has a mole that needs ferreting out. In his review, AP film writer Jake Coyle praised the third collaboration between Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp (“Presence, “Kimi”): “Their movie adopts the air of menace and suspicion of a John Le Carré novel, yet hinges on the sturdiness of its married couple, like a super spy version of Nick and Nora from ‘The Thin Man’ or a more cerebral ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith.’”

In “Nonnas” (Friday on Netflix), Vince Vaughn stars as Jody “Joe” Scaravella, an MTA worker who, after the death of his mother, opens up a traditional Italian restaurant to honor her memory. He hires only grandmothers — played by Lorraine

Bracco, Talia Shire, Susan Sarandon and Brenda Vaccaro — to do the cooking. James Jones’ documentary “Antidote,” playing as part of PBS’ “Frontline,” follows the Bulgarian investigative journalist Christo Grozev, a prominent reporter on the imprisonment and death of Alexei Navalny, and Evgenia Kara-Murza, the wife of activist Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was poisoned twice and sentenced to 25 years in a Russian prison. The film, now streaming on PBS and the PBS app, details the lives of opponents to Russian President Vladimir Putin. If the end of season three of “White Lotus” has you down, a new film series on the Criterion Channel collects some brilliant tales of trouble in seaside locales. The series, dubbed “Coastal Thrillers” includes gems like “Key Largo” (1948), “The Breaking Point” (1950) and “The Ghost Writer” (2010).

Stanly baseball teams advance in state playoffs

North, South and West

Stanly won at home and were scheduled to host second-round games

THE 2025 STATE baseball playoffs kicked off Tuesday night with three Stanly baseball teams hosting first-round games.

North Stanly 8, Wheatmore 5

The Comets entered the 2A Western Region with the highest seed North has ever had in a 2A baseball playoff game, seeded third.

A big six-run first inning gave the Comets enough cushion to hold off a late rally from the No. 30 Wheatmore

Warriors for an 8-5 first-round win.

Charlie Shaver went the distance on the mound for North (25-1), giving up four earned runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Back-to-back doubles by Tyler Daugherty and Aiden Hamilton kickstarted a six-run effort in the bottom of the first. Nathan Helms delivered an RBI double, then Heath Klingensmith drove two more in with a base hit to center field. Rylan Furr’s twoRBI double gave North an early 6-0 lead.

North added two runs in the second on a Hayden Moore RBI and a sac fly from Zach Lowder to lead 8-0.

Caleb Coggins put Wheatmore (8-16) on the board with a two-RBI triple in the top of the fourth, later scoring on an RBI groundout cutting North’s lead to five, 8-3.

Wheatmore added an unearned run in the fifth and had two runners on base in the seventh when a balk with two outs scored a run to bring the visitors within three runs. Shaver struck out the last batter to end the game.

North Stanly was scheduled to host North Surry (16-9) Friday night. The Greyhounds, the No. 15 seed, advanced with a 12-2 win over No. 18 McMichael in the first round.

South Stanly 13, Elkin 3

The Rebel Bulls, the No. 3 seed in the 1A Western Region, easily advanced to Friday’s scheduled second round of the postseason with a 10-run five-inning home win.

Braylon Tyson was the winning pitcher for South (21-6), allowing three earned runs on three hits for the complete game

victory, walking two and striking out five. Peyton Luffman took the loss for the Elks (6-17), with Xan Charles leading Elkin’s offense with two hits.

Ayden Russell and Carter Callicutt had two hits each to lead the offense for South, while Callicutt and Justice Buck drove in two runs apiece. Braden Smith had a three-RBI double for the Bulls as well, and Jack Crump was 3 for 4 at the plate. Tyson, Jarrett Hinson and Luke Dennis all drove in runs for South.

The Bulls were scheduled to host Eastern Randolph (12-12) Friday night. The 15th-seeded Wildcats (12-12) advanced to the second round with a 10-9 victory over No. 18 Cornerstone Charter.

West Stanly 3, Walkertown 0

The Colts, the No. 7 seed in

the 2A West, got a superlative pitching effort from its staff in advancing to the second round of the playoffs with a 3-0 home win versus No. 26 Walkertown (18-9).

Sam Carpenter went 61/3 innings on the mound for West (19-6) allowing one hit with three walks and 11 strikeouts, reaching the pitch limit with 106 pitches. Cooper Crisco pitched two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief with two strikeouts. Leadoff hitter Landon Bailey was 2 for 3 for the Colts, while Crisco also had a 2-for-3 night with an RBI. Ben Mecimore was 1 for 2 with a solo home run, while Ethan Saylor was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

West Stanly will host No. 10 West Davidson (17-9) in the second round of the state playoffs. The Dragons advanced with a 4-3 home win over No. 23 Morehead Tuesday.

The head of the Randolph County School System is highly involved in the state’s athletics operations

A RISE IN ejections across sports in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has raised the concern of Stephen Gainey.

Gainey, the superintendent of the Randolph County School System, is serving as NCHSAA president.

“I’m seeing sportsmanship issues,” Gainey said last week after the association’s spring meetings wrapped up. “I see it on the field. I see it in the stands. And it’s very concerning to me.”

The number of ejections of players has increased dramatically during the 2024-25 school year, NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker said.

For Gainey, who regularly attends sports competitions in Randolph County and at the state level in the postseason, there needs to be adjustments in behavior. In some ways, it stems from cultures within the programs.

“I’m just going to tell you, we

have a problem,” Gainey said. “We need to get it turned the other way. … What bothers me is we’re having this interfere with all the positives of high school athletics.”

Gainey said it’s possible to have less-confrontational environments for athletics. There have been more than 1,000 ejections this school year.

“We need to look and see if we can strengthen those consequences a little bit,” Gainey said.

“If you look at our ejections, they just continue to rise from year to year. I have schools of my own that I get concerned about. I

“Not that we want students to have more penalties,” she said, but deterrents to misbehavior generally result in fewer problems.

Fill out a bracket

Regarding postseasons and bracketing, Ratings Percentage Index will be used exclusively to seed teams. The best seeds will no longer be reserved for conference champions. In fact, conference regular-season and tournament champions won’t even been guaranteed spots in the postseason.

The RPI is a combination of a team’s winning percentage (40%), its opponents winning percentage (40%) and its opponents’ opponents winning percentage (20%).

Protecting conference champions would have been more problematic because of the expanded number of classifications. Many conferences have teams from multiple classifications.

Some schools have never been in a split conference, Gainey said. Now, there will be conferences with schools representing up to three classifications.

“This eight-class system was a result of a vote of membership,” he said. “We have to have some time to see how all this is going to work out.”

West Stanly, softball

Saylor Edwards is a junior outfielder for the West Stanly softball team.

West Stanly is the No. 5 seed in the NCHSAA Class 2A state playoffs, and the Colts opened with a 12-1 win over No. 28 Burns. Edwards led the way in the win, hitting two home runs. She finished the day 3 for 3 with two runs and four RBIs. For the season, Edwards was second in the Rocky River 2A/3A conference in homers and led the Colts in hits, RBIs, slugging and steals.

earned runs on eight hits. Kylie Speight pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh for the Comets.

Four different Comets had three hits in the game. Emma Sanders was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, while Kylie Speight was 3 for 5 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Freshman Sammie Lowder drove in four runs, including a double and a home run, and Leah Frick was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

The Comets host No. 14 Forbush (20-7) in the second round of the playoffs, which was scheduled for Friday night. The Falcons (20-7) advanced with a 3-0 win over No. 19 Pine Lake Prep.

West Stanly 12, Burns 1

Tuesday’s first-round home victory for the No. 5-seeded Colts was a historic one for its head coach.

Emily Smith, who led the Colts to two state titles as a head coach and two as an assistant, earned her 100th career head coaching victory as the Colts blew out the Bulldogs.

All together or not

From some sources there’s a push to create separate championships within the NCHSAA for parochial and charter schools, so traditional public schools don’t have to compete against them.

“The board and staff needs time,” Gainey said. “That has a lot of implications.”

Gainey said addressing this topic would take careful study, particularly in the aftermath of the months-long restructuring connected with the shift

Madi Whitley allowed no earned runs on three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts to earn the win in the circle for West.

West (21-4) scored at least one run in all five innings. Saylor Edwards had a huge night at the dish for the Colts, going 3 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs. Makayla Crayton added three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, while Payton Watson was 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and one run driven in.

“The success of our program is all based on the people in it and the culture we try to establish every day,” Smith said. “Beginning with our players, who work hard on and off the field and make us proud every day. They are phenomenal young women.

“I have had the privilege of working with some wonderful coaches and learned from all of them, including both assistant coaches this year, Haily Jarman and Abbie Yarboro. They have both played at the collegiate level and been very successful, and it is great to see them pour knowledge into the players each day. “ Regarding the season so far,

from four classifications to eight. Of the NCHSAA’s 442 member schools, about 60 would fall into the category of parochial and charter schools – with that percentage increasing. One of those familiar to Gainey is Uwharrie Charter Academy, which has captured multiple state championships. That Randolph County school isn’t part of the RCSS, but it sits in the district’s footprint. Gainey said while pleas to separate certain schools during postseasons have been received, there are other stakeholders who the NCHSAA

she continued, “I am thankful each day to have the opportunity to coach at West Stanly and for all the community support.”

South Stanly 9, Hiwassee Dam 2

The Bulls made the long trip across the mountains to earn a road win Tuesday.

Senior pitcher Kinsley Tyson earned the win for the Bulls (1313), allowing one earned run on three hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Olivia McNabb took the loss for the Eagles (9-8).

Ashleyn Tucker led South’s offense, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Ellianna Ussery drove in three runs for the Bulls. Tyson helped her own cause, driving in two runs, and Lia Carpetner was 2 for 5 at the plate.

South will travel down to Union County to take on fellow Yadkin Valley Conference opponent Union Academy (22-1). The Cardinals, the No. 1 seed in the 1A West, advanced with a 17-0 win versus No. 32 Bessemer City. The Cardinals swept the Bulls in the regular season with scores of 2-0 and 9-0.

hasn’t heard from on the topic.

“Charter schools are part of our membership and they have been,” he said. “We have charter schools that are very active members in our membership and we’ve made that work.” Monumental changes for NCHSAA schools have been in the works. Those are about to be implemented for the 202526 school year.

Tucker praised Gainey for his leadership during “an historic year.”

Gainey said there has been plenty going on.

“It has been an exciting year for me,” he said.

Fiji Olympic rugby medalist Raisuqe, 30, killed in crash

The Associated Press

CASTRES, France — Josaia Raisuqe, a Paris Olympics medalist, was killed in a road crash on Thursday, his Castres rugby club said. He was 30.

Raisuqe was reportedly on his way to training when his vehicle was hit by a train.

“Castres Olympique is in mourning,” the club said in a statement on its website.

“It is with heavy hearts that we learned of the death this morning of our player Josaia Raisuqe in a road accident.

“The entire CO family is devastated by this terrible news. Josh had been a member of the club since 2021. He was a wonderful teammate, much loved by everyone, including the Castres supporters who had embraced him. We extend our sincere condolences and thoughts to his family and loved ones.”

Raisuqe appeared on the wing for the Top 14 club less than two weeks ago.

He was in the Fiji team which won the Olympic silver medal in rugby sevens in Paris last year. He scored a try against the United States in pool play and started in the final against France.

He’s been playing club rugby in France since 2015, when he joined Top 14 champion Stade Francais. He also played for second-division side Nevers, and got into an infamous incident in 2021 when, overjoyed by a win, he hoisted the referee over his head after the fulltime whistle. The ref gave him a red card.

The following season, Castres deployed Raisuqe as a flanker en route to the 2022 Top 14 final.

“He was a radiant boy on and off the field, a pillar of the Fijian community we have at the club and to which we are very attached,” Castres chairman Pierre-Yves Revol said. “It is also difficult at this time not to mention the faith of all these (Fijian) players and of Josaia. My thoughts are with his fiancée and his entire family.”

Turkish politician at center of efforts to end Kurdish conflict dead at 62

The Associated Press

ISTANBUL — Sirri Sureyya Onder, a key figure in Turkey’s latest effort to end the four-decade Kurdish conflict, died Saturday. He was 62. Onder died of multiple organ failure 18 days after he was hospitalized following a heart attack, the Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul’s Sisli district said in a statement reported by Anadolu news agency.

Onder was a member of parliament for the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party, or DEM Party, and was one of several politicians to visit jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party leader Abdullah Ocalan in a bid to find a path to peace. Onder and fellow DEM Party lawmaker Pervin Buldan met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last month as they sought to build a framework to end fighting that has caused tens of thousands of deaths.

In February, Ocalan called for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party to disband. The group, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey and most Western states, announced a ceasefire days later.

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus described Onder as “a valuable person who earned everyone’s respect with his political stance, kindness and modest personality.”
