There’s something for everyone here in the 305. Here are some festivals you won’t want to miss.

Music

305 LIFESTYLE Music Scene
Scene Earth Pixel LLC / Alamy Stock Photo

Miami is known for being a world-class nightlife destination fueled by superstar DJs and hip-hop acts. Everyone from David Guetta to Steve Aoki and Drake to Lil Wayne has headlined Miami’s legendary mega-clubs. But Miami’s music scene goes beyond electronic dance music (EDM) and hip-hop to include jazz, Latin, classical, and indie musicians. And while the Ultra Music Festival at Bayfront Park in March has drawn thousands of EDM fans to Miami for over 20 years, there are plenty of other music festivals and events to enjoy throughout the year spanning all musical genres.

Indie Darlings

One of the relative newcomers to Miami’s music scene is the two-day III Points music festival in Wynwood in October, whose acts range from up-andcoming indie artists to cult favorites, spanning pop, alternative, rap, techno, and Latin music. Last year’s headliners included Rosalía and LCD Soundsystem, with diverse musicians like DJ Harvey, Busta Rhymes, and the Jacuzzi Boys on the lineup. The North Beach Bandshell hosts a similarly eclectic range of concerts year-round at its oceanfront amphitheater under the stars. And for an intimate “listening room” experience, seek out Dante’s HiFi in Wynwood.

Subtropical Classical

South Beach is home to the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy, led by legendary conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, and hosts concerts throughout the year. Designed by Frank Gehry, the state-of-the-art music hall is situated on Soundscape Park, where symphony concerts are projected on the building’s 7,000-square-foot exterior wall for all to enjoy for free beneath the stars and swaying palm trees. Miami is also home to the Grammy-nominated Seraphic Fire, a choral orchestral chamber ensemble that performs a special Christmas concert annually and shows throughout the year. In addition, the Miami Design District produces free concerts by the Miami Symphony Orchestra and other groups at its historic Moore Building and alfresco Palm Court.

All That Jazz

Miami is also a jazz town with the South Beach Jazz Festival in January and Jazz in the Gardens at Hard Rock Stadium in March, encompassing soul, reggae, and R&B with headliners like Erykah Badu, Sean Paul, and Jodeci. You’ll also find jazz ensembles performing at intimate venues around town, like the convivial midtown wine bar Lagniappe House, downtown Italian restaurant Soya e Pomodoro, and Little Haiti’s Magic 13 Brewing Co., as well as Miami Beach hotel lobby bars like The Betsy or Greystone.

Latin Flair

Miami pulses to the rhythm of Latin music, from Cuban conga and Brazilian samba at Mango’s Tropical Cafe on Ocean Drive to CubaOcho and the reimagined historic Ball & Chain in Little Havana, where you can enjoy salsa dancing set to live musicians. You’ll find plenty of reasons to get on your feet in Miami.

today’s 18-square-block, LEED-certified neighborhood includes dozens of designer flagships: from major fashion houses like Chanel, Gucci, and Prada to more accessible, emerging labels like Reformation, Veronica Beard, and Cult Gaia. It’s home to the highest concentration of Michelin stars in Miami, and Michelin’s only two-star restaurant in Florida is L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, while Le Jardinier and COTE Miami each earned one star.

With its collection of public art that is both captivating and playful, coupled with local galleries and the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, visiting the Design District is always enriching and full of discovery. It’s become a true community gathering place thanks to free events, like the Miami Design District Performance Series in collaboration with Grammy Award–winning producer Emilio Estefan, the Miami Symphony Orchestra, and other artists.

“The neighborhood is a hub for art, culture, and creativity,” says Robins.

“In addition to some of the world’s leading luxury fashion houses, we also have a roster of global artists and

in the

designers who view the neighborhood as a focal point for activating big moments.”

Robins founded his real estate development company Dacra in 1987 when he began revitalizing sections of South Beach’s historic Art Deco District, Lincoln Road, and Española Way. As an avid art collector, the confluence of art, design, and architecture has always been at the core of Dacra’s ethos. In 2005, Robins created Design Miami/ alongside Art Basel Miami Beach,

which has evolved into the world’s premier global forum for collectible design with an edition in Basel, Switzerland.

Today, the Design District rivals the most sought-after global shopping districts, from Rodeo Drive to Milan. It’s currently embarking on a fourth development phase, adding an additional million square feet to the neighborhood, including the first Class A office building with The Ursa, a collaboration between local architecture firm Arquitectonica and renowned artist Daniel Arsham. With its landmark site-specific installation by Zaha Hadid, the historic Moore Building will transform into a boutique hotel, private members club, and restaurant by the hospitality company Woodhouse.

“In the coming years, we will focus on hospitality, residential, and more offices to continue making the neighborhood a 24-hour experience,” says Robins. “Miami now has this interesting combination of being a tropical paradise but also a global city of cultural substance. People see the city again with new eyes, a city that trades on culture and creativity. There’s no telling what’s to come.”

THE STORY OF CUBAN AMERICAN ARTIST FLORENCIO GELABERT

The Power of SHAPES

Follow an artist’s journey from Havana to Miami.

orn in Cuba, Florencio Gelabert never imagined he would become one of the most influential artists of his generation when he began his studies at Havana’s San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts. But after more than 30 years, Gelabert finds himself in a fulfilling moment where his personal life and work as a sculptor meet in abundance.

“It has not been easy getting to where I am; one must persevere, feel passion for the work, and, without a doubt, take advantage of every opportunity,” says Gelabert. “For me, comparison and learning were vital — how to perceive and place the work in the context where one chooses to grow and, of course, being in this great country.”

Gelabert defines his work as sculpture in the broadest sense of the concept. “All my creative activity has revolved around three-dimensional forms, volumes, and textures. I am an artist professionally influenced by the Italian Arte Póvera and by North American art movements of the second half of the 20th century: minimalism, land art, and conceptualism.”

Connecting and engaging with the public using precise aesthetic language drives him to continue creating. “I work with materials and techniques that let me establish a dialogue with the environment,” he explains. “My creative spectrum ranges from small-format works to large-scale installations that interact with the space where they are placed.”

Public art is fundamental within the visual arts and is much more accessible to the public than a gallery, a museum, or an art center. It allows the work to be installed in a site where an audience can appreciate it freely, outdoors or indoors. One of his most significant works, Column Tree, is permanently displayed at Paraíso Park in Miami. This sculpture was commissioned by Related Group and is a perfect example of Gelabert’s ability to connect with the public.

Gelabert is currently building his own studio and planning a major exhibition and a large-scale public art project. His success as an artist shows the power of shapes to communicate with the public and transcend generations.

Havana

WHERE CUBAN CULTURE COMES ALIVE

One of the liveliest and most vibrant neighborhoods in Miami, Little Havana embodies the heart of the many Cuban immigrants who have arrived on our shores.

or a taste of Miami’s rich Cuban heritage, take a trip to Little Havana. Just west of Downtown Miami, the heart of the neighborhood runs along Calle Ocho (or Eighth Street), where sweet soca music blares from storefronts, Domino Park is a perennial gathering place, and ventanitas sell Cuban coffee and croquetas. Miami’s cultural connection to Cuba dates back decades to a major immigration wave in the 1950s, and Little Havana is the historic home of this community. Here, you’ll find murals depicting symbols of Cuba, including tropical fruit, musical instruments, dominoes, and cigars, while others illustrate Cuban legends, from poet and revolutionary José Martí to the illustrious singer Celia Cruz, who once performed in the neighborhood.

Where to Eat

One of the best ways to get a taste of Cuban culture is through its cuisine. Versailles has been a local gathering spot and one of Little Havana’s most popular restaurants since 1971. Here, you’ll find every staple of Cuban cuisine, from croquetas to cafecitos and heaping portions of juicy shredded beef ropa vieja with yellow rice, black beans, and fried sweet plantains.

You can’t miss La Carreta with its giant colorful rooster sculpture out front. With a family dining tradition and “abuela-style” cuisine, it’s a fantastic place for authentic classics, like the Cuban sandwich made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard pressed on warm, fresh Cuban bread.

At Casa Juancho, indulge in an upscale Spanish feast of tapas and paella in a rustic, yet elegant hacienda-style setting, while Toro Loco Churrascaria is a carnivore’s dream, featuring platters of USDA Prime

certified angus beef, Wagyu, grass-fed lamb, chorizo, chicken, and other premium cuts served with tangy chimichurri and other sauces.

For a sweet treat, stop by Los Pinareños Fruteria, the oldest open-air market in Miami, where you’ll find fresh-made juices and milkshakes made with exotic fruits, like mamey, mango, carambola, pineapple, coconut, and more. And for artisanal ice cream in Little Havana, look no further than Azucar and order their signature Abuela Maria scoop made with the classic pairing of guava and cream cheese, served with a Galleta Maria cookie.

Where to Shop

For Little Havana souvenirs, visit Little Havana to Go, where you’ll find everything from T-shirts to key chains, sun hats, toys, beach bags, magnets, and travel accessories, as well as jewelry and art by local craftspeople. At The Havana Collection, discover their incredible collection of classic guayabera shirts for men, women, and children along with a variety of unique souvenirs. A staple of Cuban fashion, the guayabera is a lightweight linen or cotton collared shirt, typically made with short sleeves, two or four pockets, and decorative stitching.

Where to Dance & Drink

For a night out, head to the newfangled Ball & Chain for mojitos and dancing. The refurbished 1930s dance hall once hosted musicians like Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, and Count Basie. With an outdoor garden and bandshell, they host live music and salsa nights and sling sophisticated cocktails and bar bites today. Another great spot for culture in Little Havana is CubaOcho, which is part museum, part performing arts center, and part rum bar. Swing by day or night to explore their collection of antique furniture and artwork from Cuba and stick around for live music, dancing, rum flights, and cigars in the outdoor courtyard.

Where to Stay

Life House Little Havana is the neighborhood’s first boutique lifestyle hotel. With an eclectic design inspired by world travel, their rooftop bar and restaurant is the perfect place to take in views of Downtown Miami over cocktails and tacos after an exciting day of exploration.

You’ll

Experiences Love

WHETHER YOU’RE A BIG FAN OF THE BEACH LIFE AND ENDLESS WATERSPORTS, A NATURE LOVER, HISTORY BUFF, OR FITNESS ENTHUSIAST, THERE’S SOMETHING HERE TO ENTICE YOU TO EXPLORE FURTHER.

It’s no surprise that people from all around the world flock to Miami Beach on an annual basis for the sun, sand, and surf. Of course, the beaches here are second to none; but if your interests go beyond lying in the sand and soaking up the sun (not that there’s anything wrong with that), the destination has so much more to offer in the form of manmade marvels and natural treasures.

Discover Miami’s top attractions and create your perfect itinerary so you can be sure to make the most of your time here.

Beach Vibes

First, let’s check out the beaches. Spanning more than 20 miles of coastline along the Atlantic, this seems like the ideal place to start. From South Beach to sunny Surfside, Bal Harbour, Haulover Beach, and Sunny Isles, you’ll find sunlit stretches of sandy shores to suit your preference — whether you’re in search of solitude and relaxation, a family-friendly atmosphere, or a livelier vibe.

South Beach, located at the southern tip of Miami Beach, is where most people flock for people watching and Instagram-worthy photo ops.

The iconic Art Deco architecture perfectly complements the lush palm trees, colorful lifeguard stands, and enchanting ocean views. To the north, there’s a bathing suit–optional stretch at Haulover Beach. If you’re craving a more laid-back lifestyle, head north to

Mid-Beach and North Beach, where you’re bound to find your perfect spot for some fun in the sun.

Many Miami Beach entrances are accessible for those with impaired mobility, and you can find wheelchairfriendly Mobi-mats at various locations.

For a more family-friendly experience, the calm shallow waters of Crandon Park, Virginia Key, and Bill Baggs Cape Florida Beach Park on nearby Key Biscayne are excellent choices. Located just a few minutes from Downtown Miami, Key Biscayne is an idyllic destination for beachcombing, swimming, and watersports.

You can also enjoy the beaches of Miami in ways you might not have imagined. Many beaches feature walking trails, bike loops, kayak rentals, volleyball nets, grills, concession stands, and more.

GOOD TO KNOW

While our beaches are generally safe, it’s important for sunseekers of all ages to practice water safety tips. For added peace of mind, stay near a lifeguard stand, since they are there to watch over swimmers and are trained to spot rip currents. Also, look for the colored flags that indicate the swimming conditions. Green means the water is calm, yellow indicates there is moderate surf and/or currents, and red is a sign of more dangerous conditions, such as high surf and/or strong rip currents.

Make a Splash

If your interests are a little more adventurous, then Miami Beach and nearby communities have plenty to offer. There are ample opportunities for activities on and under the water in the form of paddleboarding, kayaking, jetskiing, boating, and more. You may even spot a frolicking dolphin in your wake!

Charter a sailboat, yacht, or catamaran for an offshore fishing excursion in search of swordfish, marlin, and other big-game fish. Or harness the power of our breezes with some serious kitesurfing, parasailing, or windsurfing along Key Biscayne’s historic Virginia Key.

Be sure to check out the exclusive Diplomat Experience, a yacht tender boat service that can take you to dinner in style, provide a Miami sightseeing tour, and more. It’s the perfect way to create lasting memories.

Dive Deep

If you love underwater adventures, then you’ll want to don your scuba suit and get ready to go exploring. Miami is home to more than 75 sunken wrecks to explore, and all it takes is a 25- to 30-minute boat ride to see incredible coral reefs.

Located just off Key Biscayne, Emerald Reef is a popular dive site where you are likely to find tropical fish, elkhorn and pillar coral, sponges, and more. It’s also an ideal snorkeling site, since it’s just about 20 feet deep.

Neptune Memorial Reef is another magnificent dive for all levels that was inspired by the lost city of Atlantis. Columns, domes, and concrete statues abound at this 40-feet-deep site.

Experienced divers can swim inside the entire length of a sunken 195-foot

steel barge. The Belcher Barge Wreck Trek is another popular dive in 60 feet of water with a trail that leads to two other wrecks. Boulders create artificial reefs and give marine life a home.

Off Mid-Beach, two WWII-era tanks sit underwater facing each other along about 1,060 tons of limestone boulders. They are home to spiny oysters, sponges, and a variety of hard and soft coral. Farther south is where you’ll find the Maritime

Heritage Trail at Biscayne National Park with both shallow- and deepwater dives that include shipwrecks and natural reefs.

As the gateway to the uppermost stretch of the Florida Straits, Miami is ideal for some underwater exploration. Local tour operators will take you out to some of the best sites based on your level of experience. If you’re not certified yet, many dive boat operators also offer certification courses.

Nature at Its Finest

If you are in search of lush landscapes and abundant natural beauty, Miami has opportunities galore, both within Miami Beach and in the surrounding areas.

Miami Beach Botanical Garden offers nature lovers a colorful treat, from rich green spaces to rainbowcolored orchids, edible gardens, and even a Japanese Garden. The Kampong in Coconut Grove boasts a collection of exotic fruits and flowers from Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, including banyan and baobab trees. You’ll also want to check out Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, an 83-acre lush landscape

that features a variety of rare tropical plants, including flowering trees, vines, palms, and more. Unique exhibits include the Butterfly Garden, the Water Gardens and Aquatic Exhibits, the Arboretum, and Geiger Tropical Flower Garden. One of the top botanic gardens in the country, Fairchild also plays host to various festivals throughout the year.

Another local favorite is the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park at the southern end of Key Biscayne. Walk along the trails and look for birds, join a guided tour, check out a keeper’s cottage, launch a canoe or kayak, enjoy a meal with oceanfront views, and more. Don’t forget to check out

the oldest standing structure in MiamiDade County: Built in 1825, the Cape Florida Lighthouse offers spectacular 360-degree views from the wraparound balcony. If it happens to be open during your visit, be ready to climb the 109 spiral steps because it’s worth it.

Of course, any true nature lover will require a trip to Everglades National Park during their visit. As the largest subtropical wilderness in the country, the Everglades boasts many exciting trails alongside mangrove forests, tropical hardwood hammocks, pine rocklands, native wildlife, and more. Contact Airboat in Everglades for a truly one-of-a-kind experience and tour the park like a local.

History and More

History buffs should plan a visit to the HistoryMiami Museum, a vibrant exploration of the city’s rich history. A Smithsonian Affiliate and the largest history museum in South Florida, the museum offers a wealth of educational opportunities within its permanent and rotating exhibits and unique experiences. Book a Stiltsville & Key Biscayne Cruise with the resident historian, Dr. Paul George, or go on a walking tour to learn about historic landmarks and public art installations. Another great learning opportunity is at Deering Estate, a 444-acre gem that provides a glimpse into what Miami was like in the 1920s. The former home of Charles Deering — a Chicago native who was an industrialist, preservationist, environmentalist, philanthropist, art collector, and

more — sits on the edge of Biscayne Bay. It’s a great opportunity to explore Miami’s history, as well as its natural beauty.

Coconut Grove’s Barnacle Historic State Park and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens are two other historically significant places to visit. The green space features jogging trails, shaded picnic areas, and two enclosed dog runs where dogs can play off-leash. While the entire park is dogfriendly, the stretch of beach that welcomes off-leash dogs is located between 80th and 81st streets. South Pointe Park

Head to South Pointe Park to take in the stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Downtown Miami skyline. Located at the southernmost end of South Beach, the waterfront park features scenic walking and biking trails, playgrounds, and an open grassy area where dogs are allowed to play off-leash between sunrise and 10 a.m. and again from 4:30 to 8 p.m. If you go off-leash, be sure to keep an eye on your pup because the area is not enclosed.

Lummus Park

Just off Ocean Drive in the heart of South Beach between 5th and 15th streets, you'll find Lummus Park — a picturesque urban beachfront park where you can enjoy reading a book, sunbathing, people watching, or getting a workout with your pup by your side. It’s also a popular spot to catch the sunrise and take a leisurely stroll on the beachfront path. While the park is dog-friendly all day long, pups must be kept on a leash during their visit.

Miami Beachwalk

For the ultimate Miami Beach sightseeing experience, you can enjoy an on-leash stroll along the Miami Beachwalk, taking in the balmy weather and refreshing ocean breezes with your favorite four-legged friend. Along the way, you may encounter cyclists, street performers, and various interesting characters.

Haulover Beach Park

Located north of Miami Beach, Haulover Beach Park is another local favorite. Here, you’ll find two enclosed dog parks: one for small dogs and one for large dogs, as well as a pup-accessible beach. The dog-friendly section of the beach is located between lifeguard towers 2 and 3, where dogs are allowed to play off-leash from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. So, if you're eager to let your pup roam free through the surf and sand, Haulover Beach Park is the place for you.

Attractiveness of The Immutable

Explore the rise, fall, and resurgence of Miami Beach as a major American resort, from its celebrity-filled boom in the mid-1920s to its status as a hot spot for entertainment and tourism.

he city of Miami Beach was but 10 years of age when it joined the ranks of major American resorts in the mid-1920s. This development coincided with a great real estate boom that radically transformed “the Beach” and many other parts of Greater Miami, giving rise to new communities, a vast population surge, and spiraling awareness of the area. The boom also drew celebrities to Miami. Sports spectacles wowed onlookers. Movies were made with the warm waters of the Atlantic as a backdrop. The sounds of music wafted from the lobbies of hotels and music halls. But the boom’s collapse in 1926 ushered in a lingering economic downturn.

Miami Beach struggled for much of the Great Depression. Ironically, World War II allowed the municipality to draw a second breath, hosting hundreds of thousands of trainees for the Army Air Corps and visitors. The full flowering of “the Beach” as a resort came with a post–World War II boom, which brought new clubs, hotels, and entertainment, including television, showcasing its alluring subtropical ambience.

The Beach was now poised to welcome America’s entertainment royalty. Nightclubs arose along Collins Avenue, the community’s main street. More exclusive clubs, such as the Copa and Lou Walters’ spectacular Latin Quarter on Belle Isle and Palm Island, drew large audiences. Many entertainment greats, from Ella Fitzgerald to the

insatiable appetite for entertainment. Not to be forgotten in the rush to embrace television were radio personalities like Walter Winchell and Larry King, who carried news of Miami Beach and its delectable offerings to many parts of the country.

The appearance of entertainment giants coincided with the advent, in the late 1940s and 1950s, of lavish hotels in Mid-Beach and beyond, hostelries like the Saxony, Fontainebleau, Deauville, and the Eden Roc. Each offered upscale restaurants and watering holes with live entertainment.

A galaxy of stars, headed by Frank Sinatra, who sang solo or with an early version of the Rat Pack, co-starring Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, continued to pour into Miami Beach. At the top of his craft in the 1950s, Sinatra enjoyed performing in the La Ronde Room of the nonpareil Fontainebleau Hotel, which stunned the resort world with its opulence and curvilinear design upon its opening in 1954. A year later, the Eden Roc opened next door, bringing its own roster of illustrious entertainers. Farther north, the lavish Americana opened later in the decade. Stars continued their rush to the Beach in the 1950s and 1960s, when a broadened roster included Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley, Rosemary Clooney, Barbra Streisand, and others.

The heady days of Miami Beach reached an epic moment in February 1964, when Jackie Gleason moved his popular television show to the Miami Beach

Auditorium (today’s The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater). The Beatles appeared before an audience of 4,000 mostly hysterical fans at the Deauville Hotel’s capacious Napoleon Room (with thousands more outside, hoping to enter!) for a live appearance on television’s popular Ed Sullivan Show Cassius Clay, soon to be Muhammad Ali, stunned the sports world by knocking out Sonny Liston for the World Heavyweight Championship in the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Often overlooked was the welcome mat rolled out by the entertainment maestros for black talent. Jim Crow–era Miami Beach welcomed Josephine Baker, Harry Belafonte, Nat “King” Cole, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and Eartha Kitt, who took their places alongside many popular white singers in the constellation of stars appearing each winter.

Miami Beach experienced a nosedive in its fortunes in the 1970s and 1980s, as new competitors, ranging from Las Vegas, with its gambling attractions, to exotic islands in the West Indies, now accessible by vessels from the growing cruise ship industry, became more “hip” destinations for fun and relaxation when compared to a tired island with aging accommodations and prices out of kilter with the worth of the product being offered.

But the slow turnaround of South Beach’s Art Deco District, a retiree haven until the late 1980s, brought Miami Beach back as a major tourist draw. Patrons flocked to various venues to enjoy the sounds of Madonna, Pavarotti (who sang before an estimated 120,000 people on the sands of South Beach in 1995),

Gloria Estefan, Lenny Kravitz, Sean Combs, and many other talented artists. Newly restored hotels and new clubs, like Mansion and Club Liquid, offered lavish settings for music, while an international roster of visitors and locals were drawn to them. The rich and beautiful sought out the island for fun, entertainment, and partying.

The Beach was back, showcasing its eternal gifts — warm weather and waters juxtaposed with stellar entertainment attractions and resourceful administrators filled with endless ideas for providing good times for a wide audience.

From crispy chicken biscuits to shrimp and grits, Yardbird offers classic Southern favorites with a modern twist. And don’t forget to pair your meal with a refreshing cocktail, a glass of wine, or a smooth bourbon from their extensive drink menu.
