The Lore of the Caribbean captivates our visitors

The lore of the Caribbean comes alive in the pages of each edition of PARADIS Magazine, filled with articles immersing our readers into the people, art, sports, culture, and hospitality of our region.

In this edition we continue our ‘Investing in Paradise’ series, with The Bahamas’ Minister of Economic Affairs, Hon. Michael Halkitis, where he shares with us his insights on the island’s world-class investment and wealth management offerings.

We then step back in time to explore the 500 year-old cobblestone streets in the colonial zone of Santo Domingo, now home to the Dominican Republic’s newest KIMPTON Hotel; then fly over to the small island sanctuary of Barbuda, the latest Caribbean billionaire hideout with its secluded pink beaches and Nobu offerings.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Central Bank takes us on a tour of their art collection gracing the walls of their gallery. With our feature article — Polo in the Caribbean, taking us into the sporting world of equine lovers where matches are played from fields in Cancun, Mexico to the sandy shores of Cartagena, Colombia.

Join me in a toast to the many storytellers, hospitality providers, sportspersons, artists, musicians, and professional services providers who help to make the Caribbean a memorable destination, captivating visitors and residents alike.

With best wishes,

“Among all art forms, music has a unique power to create a sense of community.”
By Prissilla Zamboni Tejada

Xiaoqing Yu, a young and talented violinist, describes her first debut at age 11 in Taramo, Italy, as a transformative experience: “For the first time, I felt transported into another reality, the world of music, and I could sense waves of emotion coming from the audience as well. From that moment, I discovered music’s incredible power, not only to communicate emotions and narratives, but to transform lives, bring joy, and offer people a brief escape from everyday life into the music world.”

Born and raised in Italy, Xiaoqing has built an impressive career at a young age, performing with esteemed ensembles

Exploring the depth and the beauty of my violin’s voice is at the heart of my artistic journey. ” “

such as the Master Orchestra, Hradec Králové Orchestra, Antonio Vivaldi Orchestra, and Orchestra dei Popoli. She has interpreted celebrated works like Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto Op. 64, Brahms’ Violin Concerto Op. 77, and Mozart’s Concertos. Her journey with the violin began at age 4 when her parents gifted her the instrument, sparking a passion that has defined her life. She describes her bond with the violin as deeply intimate: “Exploring the depth and the beauty of my violin’s voice is at the heart of my artistic journey.”

With dedication, passion, and incredible sensitivity, Xiaoqing brings musical compositions to life, creating a bridge between composers and audiences. For her, music is a universal language that transcends boundaries, speaking to everyone and uniting musicians and listeners alike.

“Through listening, we can discover a transcendental reality based on the expression of sound, and that is a shared space which unifies us and inspires us.”

Xiaoqing is also an active orchestral musician, having collaborated with renowned conductors such as Daniel Harding, Gianandrea Noseda, Mei-Ann Chen, Hugh Wolff, Ludovic Morlot, Yoichi Sugiyama, and Dima Slobudeniouk at prestigious festivals like the Aspen Music Festival and Verbier Festival. She values the deep connections forged with fellow musicians, the interplay between instruments, and the discovery of her own voice within the larger musical tapestry. One of her most touching experiences was performing Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, though she has also explored contemporary music through collaborations with emerging composers, including talents from China.

Xiaoqing’s sensational dedication to her art is the result of a long journey filled with immense passion and reverence for music. / P

The Bahamas’ Minister of Economic Affairs, Hon. Michael Halkitis, speakes with Paradis on the island nation’s world-class investment and wealth management offerings.

Wyou are looking to make use of private banking services, investment funds, trust services, portfolio and asset management, family office services, private trust companies, insurance and annuities, fintech offerings, or setting up an IBC or foundation, the Bahamas have a product that can meet your needs.

Q: The Bahamas is often promoted as an “ideal place to live, work, and play.” What makes The Bahamas such an appealing jurisdiction?

A: The Bahamas offers a seamless blend of world-class financial services, beautiful island landscapes, and quality of life. Our relatively high GDP per capita, proximity to the USA, political and economic stability, and tax neutral approach featuring no personal income, estate, or wealth taxes, all appeal to individuals who want to manage and grow their wealth while enjoying life.

The Hon. Michael Halkitis is an economist and finance professional who has served as The Bahamas’ Minister of Economic Affairs since 2021 – a role in which he has led major compliance efforts, advanced the government’s digital transformation, strengthened the nation’s digital assets framework, and promoted The Bahamas throughout the globe as a leading financial services jurisdiction.

” “

Tourism is our number one industry, which means that access to luxury amenities is widespread. From private islands to fine dining, exclusive golf courses and community clubs, there is a lot to love about living in The Bahamas. Business is booming, and top luxury hotel brands like Rosewood, Montage, Park Hyatt, Bvlgari, Four Seasons, and Ritz-Carlton all have ongoing expansions or new projects in development. We also offer permanent residency options for homeowners and investors, making it easy to make The Bahamas your home base, not just an investment destination.

Of course, we are also home to the world’s top financial services brands, as well as arguably the highest levels of per capita financial services talent in the world, which means that investors can be confident their money is in good hands.

Q: The Bahamas has long been regarded as a premier financial services jurisdiction. What is the secret ingredient that maintains your position as an industry leader?

A: I can do better than one ingredient. I can give you three.

QA

First is our legislative agility. We have a proven track record of responding swiftly to global trends with innovative frameOur aim is to become the preferred jurisdiction for forward-thinking family offices, institutional investors, and fintech innovators

works like SMART Funds and our world-leading Digital Assets regulations to support crypto and blockchain-based investments. We have balanced regulatory clarity with flexibility, ensuring that we are meeting the highest global standards while also providing demand-driven, adaptable wealth management products that meet the needs of our clients.

Second, of course, is our lifestyle appeal. High-net-worth individuals are not just looking for a place to invest, but a place to live and enjoy world-class amenities and entertainment.

Third is our deep bench of experienced professionals: attorneys, bankers, financial advisors, insurance specialists, and many others provide top notch service with a uniquely Bahamian touch.

Q: As global demand shifts toward more bespoke and tech-enabled financial solutions, how is The Bahamas positioning itself to attract the ultra-wealthy and institutional investors?

A: We are promoting a client-cen-

tric model that allows private financial institutions to develop sophisticated, customisable products across a wide array of investment options. For example, we have the framework in place to facilitate the full array of traditional wealth management products, such as trusts, investment funds, and similar investment vehicles, but we can also facilitate investments in digital assets and impact investment. Local companies are also embracing this era of technology, big data, and machine learning to facilitate personalisation at an unprecedented scale so they can arrive at unique solutions for a diverse global customer base.

The Government of The Bahamas is very focused on supporting these companies with an agile regulatory framework that supports innovation while upholding integrity. We are also investing in digital infrastructure to make it easier for investors to establish residency, corporate structures, and financial vehicles here. Robust public-private partnership is a cornerstone of our approach, and we are working closely with industry stakeholders

to co-develop new legislative tools that empower them to innovate. We maintain ongoing public-private dialogue through the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB) and other industry groups, ensuring that policies are informed by private sector insights.

Q: The financial services sector is constantly adapting to international regulatory pressures. How is The Bahamas maintaining its relevance while ensuring compliance?

A: We have taken a proactive, transparent approach. Since the early 2000’s we have made global compliance priority number one. Those who choose The Bahamas for their wealth management needs can be sure they are investing in a jurisdiction that has a stellar international reputation with clear standards that protect investors’ assets and maintains high levels of trust while featuring one of the most investor-friendly tax regimes in the world.

We approach compliance as a competitive advantage rather than a hurdle. As a result, we have avoided

or secured removal from even the most stringent blacklists and graylists, meeting the rigorous standards of the OECD, FATF, and EU. In fact, at the end of 2023, we became the 6th country in the world to become largely compliant with the FATF’s 40 Recommendations. As the UN emerges as a global regulatory body, we intend to build on our compliance success through our active participation on the Negotiating Committee for the UN’s Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation to contribute to a more balanced, fair, and practical approach to developing and implementing global standards.

Q: Looking ahead, what does the next generation of financial services in The Bahamas look like?

A: The next generation of financial services is personalised, tech-forward, and globally integrated. We envision The Bahamas as a leader in digital financial services, sustainable finance, and cross-border wealth planning. Our aim is to become the preferred jurisdiction for forward-thinking

family offices, institutional investors, and fintech innovators seeking jurisdictional flexibility, regulatory clarity, and quality of life – all in one place. Our market reach will expand across the USA and Americas, as well as markets throughout Europe and Asia.

FOREWORD The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago has one of the most important and prestigious Art Collections in this twin-island nation. From the earliest work, an 1850 pen and ink drawing by Michel Jean Cazabon, the collection spans almost 200 years and over 275 pieces showcasing the rich and diverse artistic heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.

In 2024 the Central Bank Museum celebrated 20 years of preserving and showcasing the nation’s numismatic and artistic heritage.

OForeward penned by Mrs. Nicole Mrs. Nicole Crooks, Senior Manager Human Resources, Industrial & External Relations The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago.

Over the past 60 years, the collection has expanded beyond the tradition of painting and sculpture to include a wide variety of genres of art such as embroidery, weaving, textiles, montage, collage, and 3-dimensional kinetic work. The collection also includes artisanal works that pay homage to the local and indigenous methods of art and craft-making.

The Central Bank acknowledges its role as a custodian of the nation’s art heritage. Through the Central Bank Museum several exhibitions are held annually to showcase works of established and emerging artists and to make the collection more accessible to the public at home and to visitors from around the world.

History

The Central Bank was established by an Act of Parliament in 1964 as a post-independence institution with the economic mandate to effect “the promotion of such monetary credit and exchange conditions as are most favourable to the development of the economy of Trinidad and Tobago.” The Central Bank was also visionary in recognising the importance of the creative arts in an emerging nation. The Central Bank was housed in the Treasury Building at the time and as early as 1965, acquired 52 pieces of local art. The first acquisition was in 1965: Construction (1960), a glass and metal work by Marguerite Wyke – an American-born poet, teacher, artist and later politician who renounced her American citizenship in 1953 to become a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. This commitment to building and nurturing creative capacity was facilitated by artistic visionaries such as Carlisle Chang, Isaiah James Boodhoo, and Ralph Baney that set the tone for acquisition in the early years. As such, the earliest acquisitions featured the works of artists such as Ken Morris, Samuel Ishak, Pat Bishop, Nina Squires, and Knolly Greenidge.

From the 1970s and prior to the commissioning of the Eric Williams Financial Complex ‘the Twin Towers’, the new home of the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank in 1986, works of prominent artists and artist educators including Boscoe Holder, Sybil Atteck and M.P. Alladin, Jill Strand and Nancy Richards, Ralph Baney and LeRoy Clarke were acquired. Works of Artists with less established careers (at the time) included Trevor Rostant, The Red House, Althea Bastien, Abstract, were acquired in 1985. Dennis Seaton, Bamboo Shoots, and Guy Beckles, Cocoon, were acquired in 1986.

The year 1986 ushered in a new era as a team was assembled to work with the lead project architects, Newel Lewis Broadbridge Associates, to devise a plan to outfit the Central Bank Tower with local art of the highest calibre. This committee, which included Daphne Harper, Carlisle Chang, Carlisle Harris, Selby Wooding, and Megan Hopkyn-Rees, was mandated to make proposals for augmenting the existing collection to meet requirements of the new building. To that end new purchases were acquired from an exhibition that was held on the ground floor of the Central Bank; paintings and sculptures were also commissioned. A competition for a large mural was held between the period 27 February and 28 March, 1986, and Willie Chen’s metal concept entitled Solar Marinorama (1986), emerged victorious amongst his illustrious peers. The final mural was completed and installed in June 1986.

During the 1990s, Central Bank through its Acquisitions Committee, acquired a total of 30 pieces by artists such as Norris Iton, LeRoy Clarke, and Donald ‘Jackie’ Hinkson. Today, the Acquisition Committee resides in the External Relations Department and since 2013 the direct management of the collection has been the responsibility of the Senior Curator, who has continued the tradition of acquiring works of historical significance, intrinsic and educational value by well established and emerging artists in various media. The acquisitions of the 2000s include works by Sundiata, Ato Osei, Prabhudath Singh, Wendy Nanan, Brianna McCarthy, and Tessa Alexander to name a few.

The Central Bank Museum Today

In December 2024, the Central Bank Museum celebrated 20 years of preserving and showcasing the nation’s numismatic and artistic heritage. The Museum was established as part of the Central Bank’s 40th anniversary celebrations in 2004, under the leadership of then-Governor Mr. Ewart Williams. Initially named the ‘Money Museum’, it opened to the public in February 2005, offering visitors insights into the development of Trinidad and Tobago’s economic history, the important roles and functions of the Central Bank as well as the evolution of our country’s currency. During those early years the Museum was a hub for educational tours and was focused on community outreach.

In 2014, during the Bank’s 50th anniversary, plans were made to reimagine the Museum for modern audiences. This project culminated in the reopening of the redesigned Museum on 15 January 2019. With an open-plan layout and interactive exhibits, the revamped Museum broadened its focus to include the Bank’s Art Collection, showcasing over 200 works (at that time) by local artists that capture more than 50 years of visual art heritage. The newly renamed ‘Central Bank Museum’ was now the most modern, purpose-built Museum space in the country and saw a marked increase from previous years in the number of visitors in just the first year of re-opening.

The Museum was closed for two years due to the global pandemic however, reopening on 18 May 2022, aligning with International Museum Day that year. Since then, the Museum has continued to offer exhibitions and programmes that aim to educate, inspire and foster meaningful connections and collaborations between various stakeholders and communities on island and around the world.

Over the past two decades, the Central Bank Museum has cemented itself as one of the most dynamic and innovative cultural institutions in Trinidad and Tobago. With the Museum’s robust schedule of exhibitions and events, it has introduced the public to histories, artists,

TThe British Army established polo in Jamaica at the West India Regiment Garrison Club in 1882 with many clubs coming and going over the years. Two clubs have continued today, each with an illustrious 100+ year history. They are the Kingston Polo Club near the Caymanas Golf Course, a 30 minute drive from the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, and the St. Ann’s Polo Club near the Drax Hall Estate within easy reach of the tourist town Ocho Rios, considered to be one of the oldest polo fields in the world.

The highlight for the polo season in Jamaica is the Hanover Charity match held in February. This anticipated match hosts the Newport Polo Team from Rhode Island in the USA at the Chukka Polo field in Sandy Bay, just outside Montego Bay. The match is part of an annual philanthropic series of events that kicks off with the swanky Sugar Cane Ball held at the elegant Round Hill Hotel and Villas. This match is followed by the Player Champion Cup in Kingston and the Roseland Challenge Cup in St Ann held in March. @kingstonpoloclub @japoloassociation

THE KIMPTON LAS MERCEDES

From the EDITOR’S DESK

A” “

We passed a historic plaque dedicated to the 1892 visit of Dominican-born revolutionary patriot Jose Marti, who had a pivotal role in the Cuban War of Independence against Spain in the late 19th century

t the heart of the Colonial Zone in the Dominican Republic’s capital city Santo Domingo, the KIMPTON Las Mercedes welcomes guests to its contemporary luxury boutique abode. Imbued with the charm of over 500 years of history, the hotel sits on one of the oldest cobblestone roads ever laid in the Americas, that today celebrates its building’s provenance among a revered collection within the zone that are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Alighting from my taxi, a 30-minute ride away from Aeropuerto Las Américas, I am greeted by Spanish Renaissance period architecture with thick wooden entrance doors framed by columns and arches of cut slab stones. Overhead, running almost the length of the building is a balcony, considered one of the longest in the colonial zone. It is adorned with forged iron balusters and embellished with floral and curvilinear motifs that set the tone for my weekend of heritage and cultural discoveries in this ‘the oldest continuously inhabited European founded city-within-a-city in the Americas’.

History meets contemporary chic

The check-in and lobby areas are reminiscent of the patrimony of the building in the 1970s when it was used as a textile manufacturing workshop. Several looms, coloured spools of yarn, woven fabrics with patterns representing the country’s flora and adorn the space. On the wall is mounted a traditional bingo game board played by community elders. Comfy benches set along the entrance corridor — reminiscent of latrines found in homes deep in the countryside — filled the rooms with cultural symbolisms of Dominicans at work, play, and rest in the days of ole.

Escorted to my room, I learnt the building was originally the home of a wealthy merchant, another time it was used as a medical centre, and today after extensive preservation work it is the leading five-star international branded hotel in the Colonial Zone. Making our way through the courtyard, we passed a historic plaque dedicated to the 1892 visit of Dominican-born revolutionary patriot Jose Marti who stayed here during his visit to the city, where he met with Dominican

leader Máximo Gómez. The courtyard is filled with soaring trees and foliage that shade seats for guests to enjoy the open airy space that seamlessly transitions into an avant-garde style with its newly appointed guest rooms, restaurants, saloons, and meeting rooms, giving the property an air of urbane sophistication with its modern amenities and contemporary design.

My Rooftop Suite

Settling into my suite that afternoon, with a King bed and ensuite bathroom, the gold finished faucets and handles added a touch of modern elegance that blended in well with the native woods and local artisan crafted ceramics and art, that gave my suite a warm earthy welcoming feel. A sitting area with TV and sofa opened up to an air-well flooding the suite with lots of natural light and a constant cooling breeze. The sitting area led to an outdoor terrace with a plunge pool and lounge chairs, offering scenic views and sounds of the bustle in the vibrant colonial zone below beckoning me to discover her treasure trove of historic delights all in walkable distance.

In-Suite treats

A hand-written welcome card, along with a bottle of wine, hors-d’œuvre, and petits fours, confirmed my in-suite massage for that afternoon. The Dominican Republic is well known for its locally made beauty products, and my masseuse carried a stock of essential oils and creams to use in the massage routine to elevate my senses, relax my muscles, and set my mind at ease. Falling into a deep slumber after, I woke up to the tolling cathedral bells calling the faithful to evening mass, as the sun began to dip.

Gourmet feasts

Joining me that evening were Dominican friends from college who I had studied with in Spain, and they know the city well. We met at the hotel’s El Patio Bar, catching up over savoury tapas and aperitifs of local Mamajuanas, a local spiced

alcoholic drink made with rum, red wine, honey, and a blend of tree bark and herbs. We then headed over to the hotel’s fine dining Zola Restaurant with its Italian cuisine and wines where we met executive chef Cusimo Urso who took us through his northern Italian menu. We enjoyed courses of buttery risottos, followed by braised game and handmade pastas served with seasonal vegetables and paired with old-world wines, closing with creamy panna cottas. After this memorable meal the only thing left to do was to enjoy a rum digestif with a hand rolled cigar. So we headed to the hotel’s El Pozo Cigar Lounge which features a 500 year-old well found in grand homes in bygone days to meet their domestic water needs. The cigar sommelier took us through the top pairings of this year’s ProCigar Festival, where we recreated the experience by pairing similar aged La Flor Dominicana cigars with rare blends of spiced Barcelo Rums to create what only can be described as a heavenly aromatic palette.

Day of discovery in the Colonial Zone

The next day my friends joined me for a hearty breakfast at the hotel’s Coral Restaurant courtyard for a sumptuous buffet to fuel us through a day of exploration on a walking tour of the Colonial Zone.

As we departed the hotel we entered onto the streets in what can only be described as a living, breathing open air museum with its concentration of sights and attractions in just under a half of a square mile. We explored the —

• Alcázar de Colón (or “Casa Colón” or the “House of Columbus”), the first castle residence in the Americas, now a Museum

• Ruins of Hospital de San Nicolás de Bari, built in the 1500s, inspired by “Micaela”, a pious black woman who founded the first ever hospital-like healthcare facility in Santo Domingo.

• Calle Las Damas, a historic cobblestone road considered the oldest street of the Americas

• Church and Convent of the Dominican Order next to Parque Duarte, amongst the oldest churches in the New World

• Distrito Del Arte Zona Colonial with a diverse collection of art

• Fortaleza Ozama overlooking the Ozama River, is one of the oldest fortresses in the Americas

• KahKow Experience where we made our own chocolate

• Monasterio de San Francisco, original burial place of Bartholomew Columbus

• Museo de las Casas Reales, an elaborate building showcasing the colonial history of the island of Hispaniola

• Parque Colón, with a statue of Columbus

• Plaza de España, with breathtaking views of nearby colonial buildings In between attractions, we shopped for Larimar — the semi precious sky blue stone found only in mines in the Dominican Republic, used to create jewellery. We also

snacked on spicy finger foods from local vendors while enjoying performances of street musicians.

Slipping into Rooftop Retreat’s Plunge pool before....

Returning to my suite at dusk with aching legs, I ordered room service and pulled out an icy cold Presidente beer from my fridge, then slipped into my rooftop plunge pool where I enjoyed the smooth refreshing taste of the Dominican Republic’s official beer with its crisp lively bite to finish. The city below was alive with sounds of Merengue and Bachata in the air, and my friends had made plans for us to have a night out on the town. My mobile pinged, they were on their way. The magic of the Colonial Zone comes alive again tonight with bustling streets filled with entertainment, zesty food, al fresco parties to locals boom-boxes, and flowing libations of rums, in a festive convivial atmosphere that makes a holiday here a captivating and memorable experience for all. | P

ndless forests of untouched mangroves perfect for spawning fish nursery grounds. Magnificent Frigate birds soaring overhead with their breeding colony, the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Year round warm weather with endless sunshine. A new airport with an FBO terminal opened in late 2024 for international private jetsetters. This is the Caribbean’s next hotspot for elite travellers. Welcome to splendid isolation — your Barbuda Island retreat!

A 15-minute flight away from bigger and more well known sister island Antigua, Barbuda is perfect for those looking for a tranquil and peaceful escape to relax on a no agenda holiday.

Barbuda Belle Luxury Beach Hotel

From the Barbuda International airport we headed by car to the seaport where we boarded a boat, passing the mangroves at Codrington Lagoon Park, disembarking at the dock of the Barbuda Belle Luxury Hotel located at Cedar Tree Point. This well-appointed hotel featuring 8 bungalows and two-bedroom Villa Lambi, is set on a secluded beach stretching as far as the eye can see on the most remote portion of the property — a perfect escape for the jaded traveller. Each accommodation built of wood, has a large outdoor balcony for dining and relaxation, with the soothing sights and sounds of nature’s call all around, and a powdery white sand beach with the calm turquoise sea just footsteps away.

Barbuda Belle is ideal for long leisurely holidays to restore your senses on an island paradise. With a mere handful of visitors, you are extended a high touch personalised service in one of the most beautiful untouched destinations in the Caribbean.

Our sky bungalow had a king-size posted bed with mosquito netting and ‘safari tent air-conditioning’ installed over the bed to efficiently use electricity as the property is run mostly on solar power. This adds to the sense of escapism to explore, relax, restore, recharge, and slow life’s pace down, on one of the Caribbean’s most idyllic beachfront destinations. The bathroom was stocked with a wide selection of L’Occitane toiletries, perfect for pampering after a day in the sea, sand, and sun.

Enter into a hidden gem that combines luxury, tranquility, and personalised hospitality at the exquisite 8-room Barbuda Belle

Luxury Boutique hotel.

Leisurely days start with sunrise yoga in the outdoor pavilion, with breakfast served on the balcony of the main building looking out to an endless expanse of powdery white sand and turquoise blue calm water, lulling us into a state of peace and tranquillity. We spent our first day relaxing, being pampered with a range of spa treatments delivered by caring hands on the balcony of our sky bungalow that included massages, facials, mani and pedis, while drifting in and out of a dreamy slumber. A sumptuous local seafood lunch was served by chefs on our sky bungalow balcony, paired with an icy cold Sauvignon Blanc offering a zesty citrusy floral taste.

In the late afternoon we swam in the crystal clear waters, making use of the anchored floating sea lounges to pass the time away. Here we watched the sun slip into the horizon then replaced by fire torches lit along the beach that imbued a feeling of warmth, calm, and relaxation.

Dinner that evening was in the main hall, with its Balinese inspired décor of natural elements, offering a rustic charm with its traditional craftsmanship. It houses the hotel’s signature fine dining Mangrove Restaurant, along with a cocktail bar and lounge. Our meal that evening had a distinctively French flair. We started with a buttery foie gras, then an onion soup gratinée, a salade Lyonnaise, followed by the main — a peppercorn crusted tenderloin steak, closing with a rich Gâteau Opéra, each course paired with delectable wines and spirits.

Discovering Barbuda’s natural beauty

Every other day we would head off by boat from Barbuda Belle to discover another piece of paradise in Barbuda. The island has over a 100 species of birds with the Barbuda Warbler endemic to the island, and Whistling Ducks a popular sight by kayakers in the dense mangroves. The enormous nesting colony of Magnificent Frigate Birds is a key conservation site and engaging experience for bird watchers. Their mating season begins in September and is a true wildlife spectacle for visitors. Here groups of posturing males inflate their huge scarlet neck pouches to attract females, along with a mating dance where they quiver outstretched wings, wave their heads back and forth, while drumming their beaks to attract attention.

The stunning ‘Princess Diana Beach’ at Cocoa Point is one of a few handful of pink sand beaches in the world, and was a favourite place to swim and relax for the late Princess Diana. At this almost undeveloped remote location — hardly any other person in sight — we would spend hours on end, with a packed picnic basket in hand. Here we would bask our days away in blissful serenity, in the quiet rural setting of this isolated beach that is today as magical and alluring as when Columbus first set his eyes on this isle in the late 1400s.

Heritage ruins dot Barbuda with the British built Martello Tower, an often visited attraction where tourists come to see its raised gun platform with thick walls used to protect the island from invading powers in times of old.

Driving around the capital town Codrington, we passed race horse tracks and colourful Barbuda Cottages beach front rentals. Stopping at the ArtCafe, we purchased locally handmade art silk screens and other tokens to gift our friends back home, and to have as keepsakes of iconic island imagery that capture the unspoilt beauty of Barbuda. Then we had a taste of traditional Barbudan fare and hospitality, dining on a burger made of local venison at Wa’Omoni Restaurant, which bears the original Amerindian name given to this island in honour of the magnificent Frigate Birds.

Numerous caves, sinkholes, and bays dot the island waiting to be discovered by nature enthusiasts. A pastime held close to the hearts of each Barbudan — from school day outings to church gatherings — is to set up camp at these spots to be at one with nature. Frangipani Glamping offers guides who can take you on hiking trips to recreate experiences dear to natives of this island paradise. We visited the scenic Two Foot Bay that runs across the sea cliffs, filled with local flora and wildlife. Then on to Indian Cave with its ancient petroglyphs created by the original inhabitants of Barbuda, the Arawak and the Siboney peoples. Not to be missed is the Darby Cave, a spectacular sink hole in the middle of the Highlands which has vegetation in its bowels akin to a mini rainforest filled with palms, ferns, and lianas.

Ultra-luxury resorts opening their doors on Barbuda

With our black card in hand, we headed over to the Nobu Restaurant to celebrate our anniversary with a gourmet meal, and enjoy cocktails with our toes in the beautiful pink sand beach. Patrons arrive by land, sea, or air at the restaurant’s helipad catering to jetsetters flying in for a day of culinary delights and to lounge at the fully serviced cabanas at Nobu’s Beach Club. Here guests enjoy sushi making classes and Japanese robata bar-b-ques. Our anniversary meal was a private Omakase sunset beach side dinner, against the breathtaking setting

of the sparkling Caribbean Sea. We enjoyed a gourmet meal starting with a caviar platter, then spicy edamame, crab salsa, wagyu, black cod miso, and closing with Nobu cheesecake paired with rare sakes. All delectable.

In 2026 the Nobu Inn is scheduled to open with 36 rooms, 17 bungalows, along with the groundbreaking of 25 beachfront lots for bespoke branded Nobu Global Lifestyle Residences that will further elevate the selection of uber-luxe accommodation available to visitors to Barbuda.

The Barbuda Ocean Club, developed by the renowned Discovery Land Company, is a members-only residential community, and is presented as the Caribbean’s most prestigious private beachfront property. With the addition of newly built avant-garde luxury residences, the Club offers unparalleled “barefoot sophistication” for family-oriented, adventure lifestyle getaways curated for discerning ultra-high net worth second home owners.

Deserted coastal landscapes, with unique flora and fauna makes Barbuda an ideal island to find a quiet space to practice the “art of doing nothing”. A picture perfect destination to restore your senses to the rhythms and melodies of nature’s bounty, makes this isle of untouched beauty a preferred choice for affluent travellers who value privacy, serenity, personalised high touch itineraries, and exclusivity. | P

Thanks to artist Line Bellay Despax, who went online for reservations, I was able to join her and her husband Jean-Michel Despax, former French Ambassador to Jamaica, for direct entry to Notre-Dame of Paris Cathedral in May 2025. After the devastating fire which the world watched in horror on 15 April 2019, we were rewarded with a view of an almost white interior, light streaming through clean, colourful stained glass windows, side chapels with tapestries I’d never seen before, and an interior section of seating for those to pray while others circulated around the sides, enraptured by everything, including a special window for those who saved the cathedral.

Incredible PARIS

Notre-Dame Cathedral or simply Notre-Dame is one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in the world, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

It is worth paying to enter the interior Treasury of Notre-Dame collection of sacred objects used in Catholic liturgy, housed in the sacristy to preserve their sanctity, some dating back to the 11th century.

Another day I headed to Musée d’Orsay where I always take the lift to the 5th floor for Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings by Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh now all surrounded by tourists with mobiles, even taking selfies with some. A temporary exhibition to one side proved incredibly moving, bringing me to tears as I never realised that the museum’s original life as the Gare d’Orsay or train station had served from April 1945 to welcome some of the million-plus survivors of Nazi concentration camps, prisoners of war, and soldiers returning from the front lines. And to that station came countless friends and families hoping to find their lost ones, those “absent from life”. Newspaper accounts and photographs from 80 years ago made this exhibition incredibly special.

Our stay at the Ritz confirmed my opinion that this is the finest of hotels, in part because of the current General Manager, Laurent Herschbach ” “

For both d’Orsay and the Louvre Museum I used Viator to book direct entry tickets avoiding long queues. After multiple previous visits to the Louvre, I booked a guide. Anastasia took 18 of us through galleries of everything from European sculptures (I’d never noticed so much male genitalia before) to the Mona Lisa (ridiculously crowded). “Louvre Couture, Objets d’Art, Objets de Mode”, demonstrating how centuries of painting, sculptures – ART – has influenced fashion designers and their creations caused a stir. Even Paris Match 15 – 22 mai did a centre fold on this temporary exhibition.

What would a stay in Paris be without a night at the opera; not the gorgeous Baroque-style Opera Garnier but rather the newer Opera Bastille, not as glamorous but with superb acoustics. Although Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto was almost brutalist in staging, Slovakian soprano Slávka Zámečniková’s stunningly beautiful voice created a perfect evening. Former French Ambassador to Jamaica Denys Wibaux invited me to the opera so I returned the favour by inviting him to Aura Invalides, an immersive spectacle with sound and light at night inside Les Invalides Dome where Napoleon Bonaparte is buried; his remains coming first from St Helena in 1840 before resting below the dome in 1861. Fifty minutes of spectacular lighting with

historic side chapels including the tombs of his brother Jerome and Generals Lyautey, Turenne, Foch, and Marshal of France Vauban dramatically brought history to life.

We had enjoyed dinner before with my husband at Bar Vendome in the Ritz Paris Hotel, 15 Place Vendôme renowned for the striking column created by Napoleon to commemorate his victory at Austerlitz in 1805, made from cannons captured at the battle. Our stay at the Ritz confirmed my opinion that this is the finest of hotels, in part because of the current General Manager, Laurent Herschbach. Originally from Luxembourg where he completed a five-year course at a hotel school, interned in different departments and then came to Paris where he started at the Ritz as a receptionist in 1997. He worked his way up from night manager, front of house manager, room division manager, food and beverage manager, operations manager, hotel manager, and finance general manager. Perhaps after 28 years he knows so much about what makes the hotel tick he can empathise with the 620 employees of some 25 nationalities and inspire them to offer warm and exceptional service. He believes that since everyone is travelling now: “Our team needs really to be sure that all the experience that we provide to our guests is a personalised service.”

With 142 rooms, the Ritz leaves 10 rooms unoccupied in case of any technical issues. Additionally, they

have floating check-in/check-out. “That means you can arrive at any time in the day, we guarantee you room ready. Also, you can leave the hotel at any time you want, not the normal hotel check-in at three and leave at noon. No.”

From The Hemingway Bar made famous after the author “liberated” the bar at the end of WWII to the Marcel Proust tearoom

to the Ritz’s interior swimming pool with exquisite mural of Florentine gardens and much more, the Ritz Paris truly is marvellous, including breakfast in the elegant dining room with Murano glass chandeliers. Airport arrival, being met at the plane door and escorted all the way to a waiting vehicle to the hotel, is so helpful, though avoid arriving in Paris on a Monday we were told repeatedly because the traffic is so bad that day!

Now to restaurants, I always return to La Closerie des Lilas, 171 Blvd du Montparnasse, 75006 by Blvd St. Michel, having dined there with my father in 1968; the lovely atmosphere continues still. We tried Mam From Hanoi, 39 Rue de Cléry 75002 with Line and Jean-Michel Despax for Vietnamese food so authentic it took me back to learning how to walk through traffic travelling at 30 miles per hour and never stopping in the streets of

Hanoi. Ten tables only means reservations are a must. Liza, 14 Rue de la Banque 75002, a Lebanese restaurant, proved to be equally authentic. They have just opened a second branch, Liza Panache, 20 rue du Faubourg Montmartre, 75009. In both cases prices are reasonable, reconfirmation the day before and two-hour limits because others are so eager to dine makes both of these definite additions to our Parisian go to places.

Best of all, Hugh Dutton, the British-born, Jamaican-raised glass specialist architect with offices in Paris whose work is known from Chinese airports and footbridges to Miami’s Brickell Mall to the Louvre and the Hotel de la Marine in Paris, joined us for dinner with a photograph of his recent wedding in Jamaica this year at Bellevue with some guests staying at Prospect Villas. Plus the news that he now designs for Tiffany & Co. Paris truly is incroyable!! | P

Leonor,

Where Light Becomes Art in your Caribbean Villa:

WRANOVSKY Chandeliers

There’s a certain kind of light that doesn’t just illuminate a room — it transforms it. It casts a glow that whispers elegance, speaks of heritage, and invites admiration. This is the light crafted by WRANOVSKY, a luxury Czech lighting atelier whose bespoke chandeliers have become synonymous with timeless glamour and refined European craftsmanship.

It’s a family story, of Josef Wranovsky and his wife Daniela Wranovska, a craftsman and a visionary designer ” “

In the heart of Bohemia, where the history of glassmaking spans centuries, WRANOVSKY artisans are quietly creating some of the most exquisite lighting pieces in the world. Each chandelier is more than a fixture — it’s a statement, a sculpture, a legacy in crystal.

A Family Tradition of Dazzling Radiance

WRANOVSKY is not just a brand—it’s a family story. Founded by Josef Wranovsky and his wife Daniela Wranovska, a craftsman and a visionary designer, the company has remained a proudly independent, family-run business since its inception. Their workshop in Turnov, Czech Republic, is steeped in tradition, where master glassmakers hand-cut and polish each crystal, assemble every arm, and wire each connection with fastidious precision.

“Luxury is in the details,” says Josef. “It’s the hours of hand-finishing, the centuries of knowledge passed through generations, and the personal connection we have with each piece we create.” And indeed, no two WRANOVSKY chandeliers are exactly the same. Each one tells a different story — shaped by its destination in the Caribbean and beyond, tailored to its setting, and inspired by the world’s most beautiful interiors.

Designed for Exceptional Spaces

WRANOVSKY’s portfolio reads like a global who’s who of elegance, adorning: boutique hotels on the French Riviera, grand estates in the Middle East, heritage palaces in Europe, contemporary penthouses overlooking Central Park, and expansive Caribbean villas.

Whether crafting a Marie-Thérèse chandelier dripping in old-world opulence or a sleek, minimalist centrepiece for your beachfronting villa, the company approaches each project with an artist’s eye and a curator’s taste. Their bespoke service is a hallmark of the WRANOVSKY experience. Clients are invited to co-create — selecting crystal shapes, finishes, scale, and silhouette. The result is always something deeply personal and undeniably extraordinary.

Lighting Way Forward

With a strong legacy deeply rooted in history, WRANOVSKY isn’t bound by the past laurels. The atelier is increasingly exploring modern aesthetics: matte black frames paired with clear prisms, asymmetrical forms, and LED integrations that blend innovation with timeless beauty.

Still, their commitment to slow craftsmanship and impeccable quality never wavers. At a time when speed and scale dominate the design world, WRANOVSKY remains defiantly artisanal — a rarity in luxury, and all the more coveted because of it.

The Luxury of Legacy

To own a WRANOVSKY chandelier is to own a piece of European heritage to celebrate the beauty and warmth of your Caribbean villa — brought to life by hand, made to outlast trends, and destined to become a family heirloom. Because in the world of true luxury, there are simply no substitutes to create an atmosphere that exudes opulence and comfort in every room of your Caribbean home. wranovsky.com | P
