Hibiscus coin in 2021 and the Oleander coin in 2022. In 2023, the BMA released the Bird of Paradise coin, the fifth coin of its flower series; and in 2024, the final coin of the series, the Bermuda Buttercup coin, will be released. The Authority is the sole regulator of the island’s financial services sector, and it is also responsible for issuing Bermuda’s national currency and commemorative coin products.

ALIKE mark the season of summer with Harbour Nights in Hamilton, a waterfront street festival hosted by the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce for nearly 30 years in the City of Hamilton. This year’s edition will run every Wednesday evening from 7 to 10 p.m., May 15 through August 28.

Visitors will find a concentration of culture on Front Street in Hamilton, which is shut down to traffic for the event to allow for a fully walkable thoroughfare. Purchase arts and crafts or jewellery in the vendors’ market, indulge in local and international fare served with a smile in the food court, and let the little ones enjoy bouncy castles, face painting, hair braiding, and other activities in the kids’ zone.

A new addition to this year’s scene is the experience zone, where visitors will find

interactive activities that vary by week, such as sports demonstrations, jewellery making workshops, and live painting sessions.

Area bars, restaurants, and shops often stay open late for Harbour Nights; and the scene is made even livelier with dance and live music performances at the flagpole, where a stage is set up for Bermuda’s best to display their talents. Don’t miss the Gombey troupes, representing the iconic performance art of the island with masquerading, dancing, and drumming.

Those who prefer to watch the scene from above can grab a balcony seat at an area restaurant, but be sure to make a reservation.

This lively, family-friendly scene is a truly uplifting display of the island’s culture and one you should not miss.

AS A BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORY, the British monarchy’s role in Bermuda is largely ceremonial. Still, elements of the island’s relationship with England are evident in many ways. Case in point: the Bermuda Post Office’s 2023 release of a $6 Souvenir Sheet and First Day Cover commemorating the coronation of HRH King Charles III. One thousand firstday covers were produced with a postmark date of May 6, the date of King Charles’s coronation.

Bermuda became the first country to issue a high-value express stamp featuring HRH King Charles III. They released this commemorative stamp on March 16, 2023, well before the King's Coronation. This special stamp is worth $35 and shows His Majesty’s silhouette. It covers the cost of the first zone express mail.

Collectors are attracted by a suite of products far beyond the stamps themselves, including elements which derive from aspects of the production process — Miniature Sheets, Souvenir Sheetlets, sheet selvedges, Mint Sets, First Day Covers, and special edition collections — all of which have their part to play in creating value for an issue.”

The Bureau also pays homage to Bermuda’s beautiful wildlife and scenery. Six species of songbirds that make the island their home are featured in the Backyard Birds stamp issue, whilst scenes of the island reflected in the water that surrounds it are displayed in the Reflections stamp issue. The songbird images were captured by photographers Miguel Mejias and Richard Brewer. Bermudian photographer Laurie Zuill’s work is featured in the Reflections series.

Introducing the 2023 Bird of Paradise Coin

Strelitzia reginae, most commonly known as the Bird of Paradise, is a singularly stunning flower that has graced Bermuda’s shores for over 150 years.

These year-round bloomers have an appearance that is said to resemble a brightly coloured bird in flight or caught indulging in floral nectar. Widely grown in its native South Africa, the Bird of Paradise has often spread its plumage in warm, humid climates like Bermuda. It currently puts on a vibrant display decorating our Hamilton City sidewalks, hideaways and exotic home gardens.

The plant was introduced to Britain in 1773, first grown at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, but has since been embraced worldwide, including Australia and the Americas, growing well in any lush or subtropical area. In his 1884 Botany of Bermuda, Governor Lefroy wrote that Strelitzia reginae was ‘to be found in many gardens’, although the exact date it was first imported to Bermuda is unknown. It has continued to thrive on the island throughout all four seasons due to slight variations between summer and winter.

Adored for its watercolour-like presentation, it is understandable why the Bird of Paradise is so popular as an ornamental plant and why this regal inflorescence is chosen as a muse for many Bermudian homes, artists and designers. The Bird of Paradise can be found in a magnificent exhibition at the Bermuda Botanical Gardens and will captivate even the most unsuspecting passerby anywhere in its proximity.
