A yarn worth thinking about... ...perhaps the most luxurious yarn to be found anywhere in the world. We find it at the Barbera textile mill in Biella, Italy. They use it to weave a fabric that is 70% cashmere, 30% silk. Softer and lighter than cashmere. Often called ‘the millionaires cashmere.’ And from this marvelous fabric, the ultimate Maus & Hoffman jacket. Made for us, by hand, in Northern Italy. We know the tailors, we know the fabric, we know the difference. That’s what makes this jacket Maus & Hoffman.

Know the difference.

For locally caught seafood and steaks grilled to perfection, The Catch of the Pelican restaurant serves up gourmet delights in a relaxed-yetsophisticated setting. Crafted with locally grown vegetables and herbs — many of which are handpicked from the resort’s very own garden — dishes capture the vibrant flavors of the Gulf Coast to produce a dining experience that is uniquely Floridian. Christine Ochs and Chase Harrison’s union was anchored by intimate friendship. The couple met at a bar and entered into a serious relationship after a few years of gradually getting to know one another. They grew together through the years, becoming inseparable and traveling the world. When Chase proposed to Christine in Jamaica, she knew the answer without a doubt. Then came the wedding planning. Christine and Chase were looking for just the right wedding venue to celebrate their love and share it with the people who were most important to them. They found it at Naples Grande Beach Resort. “Not only is the Naples Grande the most beautiful venue in Collier County; it was able to accommodate our large number of family and friends that were traveling for the wedding,” Christine says. “Our guests were treated to pools, a tiki bar and a steady flow of delicious food throughout the weekend.” Preparing for a wedding can be strenuous. Naples Grande alleviates the stress by handling all the details and providing myriad ways for couples and guests to enjoy themselves at the resort and throughout the region. The resort also offers a variety of space and menu options, allowing for a customized experience when catering a wedding of any size and style. “The staff was A+ and gave us an experience that we would never forget,” Christine says. “Every turn we made, we were greeted with smiles and ‘Can we do anything for you two?’” Moreover, Naples Grande is a landmark in a city that epitomizes romance. With sun-soaked beaches and magnificent sunsets, not to mention a variety of restaurants, galleries and shopping centers, Naples is a great place for couples to spend time with each other and loved ones. The ceremony went off without a hitch. The entire experience, in fact, was far better than Christine and Chase ever imagined it could be. “Within each other, we have found laughter, happiness, a love for family and passion for travel and new experiences,” Christine says. “Now we are so excited to start this new chapter and continue to grow and build our lives together and one day start a family of our own.” N A P L E S G R A N D E . hy do millions of tourists from around the world visit Naples each year? You might be inclined to pin it on the beaches, among the finest in Florida. But Naples offers so much more than sun, sand and sea. Located between the Everglades and the Gulf of Mexico, Naples opens the door to attractions you won’t find anywhere else. Don’t return home without sampling at least a few of the city’s signature experiences.

Celebrate Sunsets Everyone knows that Naples beaches are blessed with sparkling white sand. But did you know that sand from Africa is partly responsible for the region’s glorious sunsets? That’s because miniscule particles, including dust from the Sahara Desert, scatter light in the atmosphere. Water reflects the light, enhancing the sky’s palette of dazzling spectral hues. Naples Pier is a well-favored place to watch the star of our solar system as it appears to sink below the horizon. Make the moment truly romantic by treating yourself to an unforgettable sunset cruise aboard a luxury yacht. The Naples Princess serves a dinner matched only by magnificent views of a daily event made magical on the waters of the Gulf.

Stargaze It’s not surprising that stars shine brightly in Naples, a city renowned for luxurious living and spectacular scenery. Jane Seymour and John Travolta have been seen downtown, and many homes here are owned by the rich and famous, including Judge Judy Sheindlin, rocker Bob Seger and writer Robin Cook. Stand on Time Tourists in Old Naples are probably unaware they’ve been strolling over a prehistoric engineering marvel, the ruins of a roughly mile-long Indian canal dating back to at least A.D. 700. The canal, dug mostly by an unknown tribe dominated by the Calusas, shortened the distance from Naples Bay to the Gulf. Follow the well-marked trail from Ninth Avenue South on the Gulf, across the park at Broad Avenue South and Third Street South, to the bay south of 13th Avenue South.

Set Out on Safari Naples is a gateway to the Everglades, whose unique ecosystem supports a staggering array of plants and animals. Board an iconic airboat and skim the fabled “river of grass,”

as the Seminole Indians called the vast expanse, or rev up a swamp buggy and slog through the wetlands. You may not spot a skunk ape — Naples’ version of Bigfoot — or the rare, elusive American ghost orchid; but you can count on a close encounter with an alligator. Upload a gator photo for the friends back home or sample its tail, breaded and fried, at a Naples area restaurant.

We love that Naples is only two hours from Miami, yet it feels like such a tropical getaway! The water is serene and refreshing. The Naples Grande Beach Resort felt like a lush oasis of mangroves, white sand and blue skies. My husband and I ventured to The Bevy in downtown Naples for their eclectic cocktails and fun ambience. The Charred Octopus and Crispy Pork Belly were a dream. Another night we stayed in and had dinner at The Catch of the Pelican, which exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the Bone-In Ribeye, as well as the Pelican Seafood Tower that had everything from oysters to poke.

Naples has so many great options for shopping and dining alfresco. Bayside Seafood Grill & Bar at The Village Shops on Venetian Bay is one of my favorites — I love grabbing a spot on the Upper Deck with a view of the water. And their crunchy Florida grouper sandwich is delicious! When I have guests in town, a tour of downtown Naples and Gordon Drive is a must. We rent bikes and cruise around, looking at all the amazing homes and doing a little shelling at Gordon Pass before catching sunset at the Naples Pier.

We absolutely adored our view of the ocean from the Naples Grande Beach Resort. The balcony was a place where we spent multiple hours each day getting work done, talking and snacking. The room service menu was delicious and allowed us to enjoy quality fresh food from the comfort of our own space and our PJs. And The Spa was so relaxing — if only we could have spent another day enjoying the amenities. It was such a nice place to unwind while still enjoying the weather and the outdoors. We also loved Kilwins Naples on Fifth Avenue South, where we stopped for ice cream frequently. N A P L E S G R A N D E . CO M

Get your inner ghostbuster going on a guided tour of famous — and infamously spirited — homes with a history. Palm Cottage, for instance. Workers here have complained of misplaced tools and cold spots in the hallways of the house, which dates from 1895. Marco Island also boasts an enjoyably eerie past. Ghosttour guides chill you with haunting tales and take you to sites like the Olde Marco Island Inn & Suites, where it’s long been rumored that spirits linger.

Since 1946, Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada has drawn guests from across the United States with its repertoire of accommodations and amenities. Situated on a private 27-acre estate surrounded by gardens and 1,200 feet of palmfringed beachfront, Cheeca Lodge is reminiscent of a classic Keys fishing lodge, boasting 214 guest rooms, suites and bungalows styled in chic island décor. A tradition of barefoot elegance, genuine service and warm hospitality exemplifies this island haven. With an oceanfront pool and two Tiki Bars — which host Tiki Tunes every Thursday and Friday evenings — the resort evokes the laid-back nature of the Keys and its yearround balmy weather. The lodge’s three restaurants serve up the best of seafood, sushi and Italian cuisine. Take in the scenery with indoor and outdoor seating at Atlantic’s Edge as you dine on seasonal fare, seafood from local waters, prime steaks and fresh local produce. Five centuries later, Naples beaches continue to amaze visitors with myriad ways to enjoy the water, from boating and boarding to parasailing and sportfishing. You won’t turn back the clock after a wet and wild day in the sun, but you’ll feel like a kid after you’ve made the most of Naples’ coast.

SUP has rocketed to the top of many water lovers’ must-do lists. The concept is simple. You stand up on a board and traverse the water with a long, pole-like paddle. Capturing wind in an attached sail or parachute enables a boarder to cut through the water and skim the surface.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the luxury 24-foot pontoon boat tour from Naples Waterway & Wildlife Tours, located at the Naples City Dock. The boat can accommodate up to six passengers and is ideal for the entire family. While you may customize your tour, the suggested tour begins with a cruise through the Ten Thousand Islands, which are made up of mangrove islands that form one of the largest mangrove forests in the world. The Ten Thousand Islands are home to many species of birds — including pelicans, eagles, hawks and herons — as well as bottlenose dolphins and manatees. Sightings of these amazing mammals are always the highlight of the tour. On a rare occasion, you may even spot a deer swimming to or from Keewaydin Island. After about an hour, you’ll arrive at the south end of Keewaydin Island, a barrier island that runs from Gordon Pass south almost to Marco Island and is only accessible by boat. The south end of Keewaydin has a beach on both the inside and outside of the island and is a great place to find amazing, pristine seashells. Bring a beach bag to collect your treasures but make sure to leave the live shells undisturbed. You can also enjoy a refreshing swim in the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico. On the return trip, if time permits, the captain can take your group on a tour of Port Royal and the amazing waterfront homes. This is an adventure that will not be forgotten. Naples is renowned as a city of sophistication and charm, but remember that it’s also a gateway to the wild and wonderful ecosystem of subtropical South Florida. Cross the threshold and be amazed.

South of Tamiami Trail East is the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, a maze of mangroves and wetlands. Most of the refuge is accessible only by boat, but you can get there by hiking the Marsh Trail, a great spot for bird-watching. You’ll also want to explore Keewaydin, a beautiful barrier island between Naples and Marco Island. The island’s beach is covered by soft, white sand and colorful seashells; and the waters provide a home for breathtaking aquatic wildlife.

CONSUME AND CONTRIBUTE Sizzle SWFL Restaurant Week is a 14-day semi-annual event in June and December that promotes eateries and donates partial proceeds to scholarships in the hospitality field. Similar to Miami Spice, these two weeks present foodies with special deals and fixed price menus — the perfect way to check off all those bucket-list restaurants — and help young people at the same time. While most participating restaurants donate $1 from every entree to the local FGCU Food & Beverage Scholarship Fund, The Catch of the Pelican at Naples Grande Beach Resort consistently donates more dollars per entree to the fund. The annual Naples Winter Wine Festival is another event that raises money to improve the physical, emotional and educational lives of underprivileged children in Collier County. The 2019 event proudly hosted 18 of only 255 Master Sommeliers in the world.

SUGAR, SPICE AND E VE RY TH I N G N I CE After the bread baskets and steak knives have been cleared and the last drops of wine are gone, there’s one final order of business to address — dessert — and Naples’ sugar spots offer plenty of options.

If you’re looking to grab a gift box of decadent chocolates, check out Norman Love Confections, where chocolates are made with artisanal flare. Here you can delve into assortments that sing with extraordinary flavors: cookies and cream, tiramisu, passion fruit truffle and caramel macchiato chocolates — all created to catch your eye and taste even better. Regina’s Ice Cream Pavilion is home to a wide range of sundaes, shakes and sodas. As though it’s been pulled straight from a scene in Grease, this retro ice cream parlor has checkered, vinyl floors and neon signage in the window; and it’s one of the best places to grab a classic banana split or root beer float. As the final cherry on top, this hangout has a vintage jukebox playing classic hits. Another great spot for sugary fixings is Kilwins Naples. Tagged “Sweet in every Sense since 1947,” it’s no surprise that Kilwins is among Naples’ most flavorful and authentic dessert shops. The first store was opened in Petoskey, Michigan, and has since grown to more than 100 locations across the United States. Whether you order scoops of their famous “Original Recipe” ice cream or indulge in handcrafted chocolates, you’ll find Kilwins rich in history and flavor. Rounding out the list of dessert stops you won’t be able to pass up is Mon“Key” Buntz, the Original Mon“Key” Bread Factory. This family-owned shop is in the heart of historic Tin City and puts a unique spin on the traditional sticky bun. With a variety of flavors, including the classic CinnaMon“Key,” Mon“Key” Lime Pie and Florida Orange Mon“Key,” plus freshly brewed Lavazza coffee imported from Italy, there’s something everyone can enjoy.

classics like Mamma Mia! and The Great Gatsby. The schedule of events is always changing.

Inspired by a famous street in Philadelphia that was known for its artistic culture, urban atmosphere and steady ebb and flow of musicians, South Street roots itself in the philosophy that “South Street is more of an idea than it is a specific place.” Aside from its cool, laid-back ambience, which is only enhanced by graffiti walls and pop art, the venue is best known for its weekly musical performances. On Friday and Saturday evenings, South Street hosts acoustic acts — the perfect way to ease into the weekend. For a little bit of excitement and flare, Reggae Sundays have been a long-standing favorite for many who enjoy the smooth stylings of well-known and up-and-coming performers. Some of South Street’s most notable guests include One Drop, a reggae-meets-rock band from California; Casey James, one of American Idol’s most talented and well-known contestants; and The Apocalypse Blues Review, featuring Shannon Larkin and Tommy Rombola from Godsmack, along with Brian Carpenter and Ray Cerbone. Apart from its well-established list of musicians, what makes this venue truly unique is the combination of its stage space and $40,000 sound system. Rivaling those of stadiums and arenas, these elements have made this a prime spot for musicians to perform. Of course, South Street wouldn’t be complete without a stacked menu of comfort food, crisp craft beers and enticing cocktails. Start any meal with an order of tacos and Crispy Cauliflower Cheddar Bites to share before delving into pizza, Beer Battered Fish and Chips or Penne Marinara and Meatballs. South Street even offers a special menu called The Blues, which presents a variety of vegan-friendly options. To round it all out, be sure to try out one of The Street’s Seasonal Refreshers, such as the Poolside Prickly Pear Margarita or the ‘Oh Alice’ Paloma, a blend of Don Julio Blanco Tequila, agave nectar, lime and grapefruit juices with a splash of club soda. With great food, incredible live music and crafty cocktails to top it all off, South Street is one scene you won’t want to miss. For more information, go to southstreetnaples.com.

What do you love most about living in Naples? My favorite parts are, of course, the beaches and the weather. More importantly, my family is here: my amazing husband, our two beautiful sons, my parents and brothers. What’s a local hidden gem that visitors should check out? Rhode’s End Beach Bar (a Mediterranean-style taverna at Naples Grande Beach Resort). When did you develop your love of fashion? I guess I always enjoyed dressing up and creating styles. I think you start paying attention to clothes and fashion when you are young, and then that never really ends. Clothes are fun for everyone because they allow you to express your personality and creativity.

Naomi Rothring has spent most of her life in Naples. On her blog, “With Love, Naomi,” she details ways that we can appreciate fashion by celebrating textures, patterns and trends. With inspirational posts and fashion ideas, Rothring keeps her Instagram updated regularly to motivate others who love fashion. Follow her at @naomi108. How long have you been in Naples? I was born in Naples, grew up here and have always loved being a resident. After going away to college at the University of Florida, I decided to come back and settle here to be closer to my family.

How would you describe your style? Modern-classic. I love pairing simple and elegant pieces with trends. What’s your must-have accessory? Honestly, it’s confidence. I play many different roles in my life, and I think it is important to be confident about yourself and what you have to offer. What is a staple of Naples fashion? Swimsuits, of course. We have amazing beaches here, and people come from all around the world to enjoy their time in the sun. To find good and trendy swim pieces, I recommend a visit to Cypress & Palm Boutique in the Pavilion Shopping Center and To The Moon, slightly north, in the Promenade at Bonita Bay. What else should visitors shop for while in Naples? There are many great places to shop with amazing selections… One of my personal favorites is Annie Handbags, which always has a great variety of handmade jewelry and handbags. Why did you decide to start blogging your fashion ideas? I started blogging to share my passion for fashion and highlight ongoing trends. By creating a space for a community of fashion lovers, I want to encourage followers to take a new step towards fashion. N A P L E S G R A N D E . CO M

NAPLES AMPS UP ITS ARTS SCENE.

state of the

arts

By Chelle Koster Walton

L

ong known for its vibrant theaters, galleries, and museums, Naples has never been one to rest on its cultural laurels. New and improved performance facilities and exciting visual arts exhibitions keep the scene fresh and inviting.

The Baker Reimagined The Baker Museum, part of the Artis—Naples mixed-arts campus, recently completed several restoration projects to improve and expand the facility. Reconfigured as a stand-alone art piece, for example, are the signature gates created by sculptor Albert Paley. The museum’s vast collection of modern American art remains, including iconic pieces such as the Chihuly Persian Ceiling and monumental sculptures by Louise Nevelson. Rotating exhibitions from the collection and visiting shows once again display in the three-story gallery spaces and outdoors. N A P L E S G R A N D E . CO M

DID YOU KNOW ? Phase I of a longer-reaching project, The Baker reopening leads the revitalized Artis— Naples Cultural Campus development.

The elimination of a glass-domed conservatory has allowed museum designers to open up the courtyard space that connects with the stages and galleries of Hayes Hall. The entryway and lobby of The Baker have also been expanded to create a dramatic effect. The biggest change to The Baker, a threestory addition on its south side, has created classroom and event opportunities. Visitors also appreciate a new sunset-view terrace café and beer-and-wine bar with outdoor sculptures. A grand staircase makes an architectural statement at the forefront of the addition’s masterpiece design and takes visitors into the new addition separately from the galleries. Naples Cultural Campus development. At the heart of the local art scene for decades, Artis—Naples is undergoing a 25-year plan to expand upon its multidisciplinary mission by creating an inner-connected campus conducive to the visual arts, performance and education. Elements of the master plan incorporate outdoor terraces with green space and new interior spaces for social interaction, art appreciation and learning.

Cultural Standouts Gulfshore Playhouse, another performance art space with visions of expanding, has set its sights on becoming one of the best regional theaters in the country. It plans to break ground this year on a 56,000-squarefoot theater and education center, to where it will relocate from its current downtown Naples home of 15 years.

In addition, The Naples Players has grown since 1953 from a community theater group performing in an old movie house to a modern performance troupe at home in downtown’s cultural center, the modern Sugden Community Theatre. Besides its seasonal bill of plays and musicals, it supports KidzAct and other educational programs. The arts community, moreover, supports two local opera companies and a small professional equity house, TheatreZone. that has sparked the annual Bonita Springs International Film Festival each February. Naples, too, has established a reputation for its Naples International Film Festival each fall. It joins a year-round roster of festivals dedicated to the arts, such as seasonal, monthly Art in the Park events in downtown Cambier Park, presented by the Naples Art Association (NAA). At home downtown, NAA mounts exhibitions throughout the year showcasing local and international artists. The gamut of Naples’ arts scene runs from Broadway musicals, the Miami Ballet, symphonic orchestra, major art exhibitions on loan from nationally acclaimed museums, films from abroad, open-air concerts in the park and fairy-tale performances by local youth. When it comes to arts and culture, Naples is a shining jewel, growing brighter every year.

Locals and visitors love the beach, tropical flora, wildlife and sunset scenes painter Emily James brings to realistic life in her gallery just off Fifth Avenue South. The native Floridian also explores subjects ranging from golf courses and European architecture to underwater tableaux and abstracts. Known for her use of acrylics and oils on canvas, her versatile work has garnered a number of awards and accolades. Phil Fisher, too, finds inspiration in Naples’ riotous flora and semitropical lighting to create watercolor and oil paintings that reflect Crayton Cove, where he keeps his studio-gallery, and beyond. For more than 40 years he has been capturing seascapes and streetscapes, working mostly outdoors. Fisher shares working and retail space with his wife, Natalie Guess, who specializes in fine batik art that stylistically portrays Naples scenes and flora. aples Grande Beach Resort has a mission: to send guests home relaxed and rejuvenated. In addition to its stateof-the-art fitness center, 18-hole championship golf course, and award-winning tennis club, the resort offers a number of groundbreaking ways to keep you feeling fit and fabulous. Last year, the resort took a major step in ensuring the wellness of its guests. It rolled out a revolutionized new oriental services program to complement its acclaimed menu of body treatments, therapies and salon services. More than 38 new therapies, in fact, bring the spa’s services to nearly 90. Many of the new treatments you won’t find in other Florida resort spas, including Acupuncture

DID YOU KNOW ? The Spa at Naples Grande offers Salt Bath Flotation Therapy to help your body recover from stress. During this 60-minute therapy, 800 pounds of Epsom salt from a float tank help relax the muscle tissue.

Facelift, Whole Body Cryotherapy, Salt Bath Flotation Therapy and LED-Light Teeth Whitening. Others are designed for those who are serious about their workouts, weight loss, toning and muscle building. “This new program sets us apart from any traditional spa,” says Yenier J. Marrero, resort spa and fitness director. “We have moved into wellness and well-being. It is designed to make you feel better and enjoy good health and benefits to the skin, mind and spirit.” Naples Grande, for example, has brought in four Chinese doctors to work with traditional providers on holistic treatments. Certified by the FDA, the doctors diagnose and treat ills like high blood pressure, obesity, stress, muscle and joint pain, headaches, immune deficiencies and digestive issues. They have introduced Eastern healing

methods ranging from stimulating gua sha and cupping techniques to electronic acupuncture and natural medications. The Spa at Naples Grande provides an indooroutdoor oasis of sanctuary from stress and worldly worries. Its 12 treatment rooms, meditation lounge, and outdoor relaxation area exude a Zen-like sense of serenity. Salon services are offered in a separate space, and the Spa Villa welcomes couples for a private experience. Outside, hot and cold pools soothe and awaken; and this year the spa introduces a Himalayan salt sauna to boost circulation and purify the body. Other revolutionary therapies include salt bath flotation, an experience of weightless well-being, and cryotherapy, in which below-freezing temperatures trigger weight loss and increase

immunity. The treatment is available for whole-body immersion or local application to the face, neck and joints. Long known for its Ayurvedic and Thai therapies, the spa was well positioned to bring to guests to a deeper level of Asian healing, says Marrero. Many of the new medical-level services work well with the scrubs and massages that originally made a name for The Spa at Naples Grande. The new Ionic Foot Detox, for instance, complements the Dead Sea Salt Scrub and helps to alleviate pain from conditions like migraines and arthritis. Yoga, another popular wellness routine that Naples Grande has long offered guests, also reaches back to ancient Asian tradition. The spa offers several 50-minute yoga sessions, including serene beachside yoga and the more athletic power yoga. You’ll also find Zumba, Aqua Zumba, total cardio and weight-training conditioning, indoor cycling and fitness walks. In between spa treatments, you can keep that peaceful vibe going with a boardwalk hike through mangroves to the beach. Then, after a vacation that restores body, mind and spirit, you can return to your everyday life relaxed and ready to take on the world.

By Chelle Koster Walton Healthy dining is a growing vacation trend, and Naples restaurants serve up flavorful selections sure to please anyone following a special diet. Wise food choices begin at the Naples Grande, where kitchen staff are trained in all the latest dietary needs for food allergies and taste preferences. The spa’s new lunch menu, for example, lists glutenfree and other healthy options. If you follow a gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or other special diet, make your preferences known when making reservations. “We like to craft meals for the guest individually,” says Food and Beverage Director Eddie Thomas. Outside the resort, you’ll find a True Food Kitchen, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free offerings. Thought & Food, Naples’ first all-organic produce stand and café, also caters to those diets. The team at Epiphany Gluten-Free Bakery prepares waffles, sandwiches, pizzas and other meals, as well as baked goods. They can also customize any item to sugar-free, dairy-free, vegan and low-carb diets. Patric’s Breakfast & Lunch does healthy food comfort-style, including a menu devoted to paleo. Vegan Kitchen’s varied menu features dishes ranging from wraps and bowls to stir-fries and curries. The new Turco Taco gives healthy eats south-of-the-border flair with handmade gluten-free tortillas, organic salads and special items designed for keto, vegan and vegetarian diets. Acknowledged for their stunning beauty, Quail West’s Preserve and Lakes courses weave through grand estate, singlefamily and villa neighborhoods. The stunning 70,000-square-foot clubhouse complex includes formal dining, enlarged and redesigned pre-function spaces, a 12,000-square-foot dedicated fitness and wellness building, a full-service salon and spa, a glass-enclosed indoor heated pool and lighted Har-Tru tennis courts.
