FbFrom cobblestone streets and centuriesold oak trees draped in Spanish moss to world-class cuisine and outdoor adventures, every corner of this vibrant region invites you to slow down, savor the moment, and embrace the magic. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover, or a couple seeking a romantic getaway, Charleston has something special for every traveler. Here are some of the top experiences you won’t want to miss.
Enriched in History
A visit to Charleston isn’t complete without exploring Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens, one of America’s oldest working farms. Its iconic Avenue of Oaks, a breathtaking threequarter-mile stretch lined with nearly 100 ancient live oak trees, sets the stage for an unforgettable experience. The plantation’s rich history comes alive through multifaceted tours, exhibits, and special events. New features include the Gin House Museum, which covers over 300 years of history. Visitors can explore the ownership history of the plantation, its agricultural evolution, learn about brickmaking — a significant part of Boone Hall’s legacy, as bricks produced here were used to construct Fort Sumter and many historic landmarks in downtown Charleston — and discover the role of cotton production and its impact on the region. The museum also includes a popular section featuring a video that highlights Boone Hall’s connection to Hollywood. Additional

highlights include the Stable Tours, which provide insight into the plantation’s equestrian heritage. With its blend of history, natural beauty, and modern agricultural practices, Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens offers visitors a one-of-a-kind adventure that brings the past to life while showcasing the enduring legacy of this Lowcountry landmark.
History lovers will appreciate a boat ride to Fort Sumter National Monument, where the Civil War’s first shots were fired. Explore the fort’s preserved walls and learn about its pivotal role in American history. The boat ride offers fantastic views of Charleston from the water, making it a rewarding experience for both history buffs and those who enjoy capturing stunning photographs.
Another must-see attraction for history lovers visiting Charleston is Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. The highlight is the World War II aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown, but it also features the World War II destroyer, the USS Laffey, as well as a Medal of Honor Museum, The Vietnam Experience, and many more highlights from America’s naval and military past.
Compact and historic downtown Charleston itself is extremely walkable, and if you’d like to make your leisurely walk more of a learning experience, you can join one of Charleston’s many walking tours. Or if you’d prefer riding in style to walking, then it’s tough to beat a Historic Horse & Carriage Tour for catching the
highlights of the city’s past as you travel across several blocks of downtown Charleston.
Majestic Gardens
Nature lovers will be enchanted by the stunning landscapes of Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, one of the oldest public gardens in America. Wander through vibrant azalea gardens, take a nature tram tour through wetlands and forests, or — weather permitting — enjoy a boat tour along the scenic Ashley River. Bird-watchers will delight in the abundance of local wildlife, including herons, egrets, anhingas, ospreys, hawks, and more, making this destination perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a bald eagle!
For even more enchanting gardens, plan a visit to Middleton Place, home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens. The historic landmark features stunning gardens, a historic plantation and Stableyards, and a restaurant and inn, among other highlights. We recommend you dress comfortably and

lined with antebellum mansions and views of Charleston Harbor. For a picturesque setting, visit Waterfront Park, known for its famous Pineapple Fountain — a symbol of Southern hospitality. Enjoy a leisurely stroll, relax on a bench by the water, or catch a breathtaking sunset.

PAST PRESENT
by JULIE DUNN
STEP BACK IN TIME AND EXPLORE THE MOMENTS THAT SHAPED THE HOLY CITY INTO THE BELOVED DESTINATION IT IS TODAY.
CbCharleston is a destination steeped in history, elegance, and charm. With its cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and breathtaking waterfront views, it’s arguably one of the most captivating cities in the United States. From its founding in 1670 to its status today as a cultural hub, Charleston effortlessly combines its rich past with modern Southern hospitality, offering an opportunity to reflect on the past while enjoying all the comforts of contemporary life.
Historic Roots
Charleston was founded in 1670 as Charles Town by English settlers who were initially attracted to its strategic location between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The new

settlement quickly grew into one of the most important port cities in the American colonies, known in particular for its thriving rice, indigo, and cotton trade.
As Charleston continued to grow and develop, its unique mix of architectural styles began to take shape. This distinctly
Charleston style was influenced by English, French, and West African cultures, laying the groundwork for the city’s distinctive beauty that remains today. The city’s rich history is reflected in its well-preserved buildings, streets, and landmarks, providing visitors today with a vivid glimpse into the past.

sHISTORY, ARTS, AND CULTURE
Defining Moments in History
African American History
As one of the primary entry points for enslaved Africans brought to North America, Charleston also holds a significant place in African American history. The city’s history is deeply connected to the Gullah culture, a distinctly African American community that has worked tirelessly to preserve its language, traditions, and crafts.
The Old Slave Mart Museum and the new International African American Museum that opened in the summer of 2023 each offer a sobering yet essential perspective on Charleston’s role in the transatlantic slave trade
Charleston’s strategic importance continued into the American Revolution, where it played a pivotal role in the fight for independence. In 1776, the city was the site of the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, where a small group of patriots successfully defended Fort Moultrie against British naval forces, securing a significant victory for the colonial cause. However, Charleston later fell to the British in 1780 during a lengthy siege that would become one of the worst defeats for the Continental Army. As a result, the city was occupied by British forces until 1782. Its historical significance continued during the Civil War when it became the site of the first shots fired in 1861 at Fort Sumter, located in Charleston Harbor. The Confederate bombardment of the Union-held fort marked the beginning of the war. After enduring years of siege and bombardment, Charleston ultimately fell to Union forces in 1865, marking the end of the Confederacy’s control over the city. These two pivotal events shaped Charleston’s identity as well as its central role in the story of the United States.

THE CITY’S RICH HISTORY IS REFLECTED IN ITS WELLPRESERVED BUILDINGS, STREETS, AND LANDMARKS.

and the strength and resilience of its African American community throughout the years.
Distinct Architecture and Southern Charm
One of Charleston’s most enchanting qualities is undoubtedly its architecture. The well-preserved historic buildings in the Historic District showcase a variety of styles that draw visitors to the city, including Georgian, Greek Revival, and Victorian influences. Charleston’s Rainbow Row, a series of colorful homes on East Bay Street, is one of the city’s most iconic sights. These charming pastel homes, dating back to the 18th century, offer a picturesque view of Charleston’s waterfront and provide a sense of the city’s once-thriving mercantile past.
Walking through Charleston’s cobblestone streets feels like stepping into another era. The Battery promenade, lined with stately mansions, offers stunning harbor views and perfectly exemplifies Charleston’s antebellum grandeur. These historic homes, many of which were built before the Civil War, evoke the opulence and elegance of a bygone era, while single-house architecture — unique to Charleston — is a hallmark of the city’s design. These long, narrow homes are designed to maximize airflow, with side piazzas (porches) offering residents a cool respite from the sweltering Southern heat.
From its pivotal role in America’s past to its beautifully preserved architecture and warm Southern hospitality, Charleston continues to captivate visitors from around the world.
Whether you’re strolling down cobblestone streets, admiring antebellum homes, or enjoying the waterfront breeze, the Holy City ensures a unique experience that feels both timeless and welcoming. As one of the most beloved destinations in the entire country, Charleston remains a testament to the enduring beauty, resilience, and culture of the American South.

FOR OVER 100 YEARS, THE FRANCIS MARION HOTEL HAS STOOD AS A BEACON OF ELEGANCE, WELCOMING GUESTS WITH ITS TIMELESS CHARM AND RICH HISTORY.

FbFebruary 2024 marked a momentous milestone for Charleston’s iconic Francis Marion Hotel as the long-standing fixture celebrated its 100th anniversary. Built by local investors and designed by renowned New York architect William Lee Stoddart, the Francis Marion stood as the largest and most opulent hotel in the Carolinas at the time, towering above Charleston’s famed church steeples. by PATRA ANN TAYLOR

CHARLESTON’S WATERWAYS OFFER ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPLORATION. WHETHER YOU’RE SAILING PAST HISTORIC LANDMARKS, REELING IN A BIG CATCH, OR KAYAKING THROUGH TRANQUIL ESTUARIES, THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE LOWCOUNTRY THAN FROM THE WATER.

LbLiving on the water in the Charleston area means a lifestyle that seamlessly blends cultural charm, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure. With its expansive waterways, historic harbor, and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Charleston offers a plethora of activities for water enthusiasts of all skill levels and interests. From boating and fishing to paddleboarding and kiteboarding, the opportunities to enjoy the Lowcountry’s aquatic playground are virtually endless.
Boating and Sailing
The Charleston area is a boater’s paradise, with waterways that include the Charleston Harbor, the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean. The harbor serves as the epicenter of maritime activity in the area, offering scenic views of historic landmarks like Fort Sumter, Castle Pinckney, and the iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. Whether you’re cruising past dolphins or anchoring near Shem Creek for fresh seafood at one of the waterside restaurants, boating in Charleston is equal parts relaxing and invigorating. Charleston waterways offer a variety of boat tours that cater to a vast range of interests. These diverse offerings — such as history, nature, partying, sightseeing, and even haunted harbor ghost tours — ensure that there’s a boating experience to suit every preference.

For sailing enthusiasts, local charter services offer personalized experiences for beginners and seasoned sailors alike. Tour options include group sails, sunset cruises, private charters, and romantic dinner sails. Visitors will find a wide selection of boats — such as yachts, pontoons, sailboats, and fishing boats — available for rent in Charleston, on Shem Creek in nearby Mount Pleasant, and in the area’s coastal beach communities.
Fishing Adventures
Fishing is one activity that is deeply ingrained in Charleston’s culture, with options ranging from inshore marsh fishing to deep-sea excursions. The region’s rich marine life makes this a haven for anglers. Inshore fishing trips often explore tidal creeks and estuaries teeming with redfish and trout, while offshore adventures target larger species like mahi-mahi or tuna. Charter services are widely available for both novices and experienced fishermen, ensuring a rewarding day on the water.
Kayaking and Canoeing
Charleston’s tidal creeks, rivers, and marshes are ideal for kayaking and canoeing, and these activities provide a tranquil way to explore areas that are inaccessible via motorized boats. Guided tours are popular for navigating Shem Creek or Folly Beach’s calm waters while observing wildlife such as herons and dolphins.

For those seeking solitude, kayak rentals allow individuals to chart their own course through the serene Lowcountry landscape.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
Stand-up paddleboarding has become one of Charleston’s most popular water activities, as it combines fitness with exploration as paddlers glide through winding creeks or along the beautiful coastline. Paddleboarding on Folly Beach or Shem Creek in particular offers stunning views of both nature and Charleston’s historic skyline. Companies offer guided

ecotours that highlight local wildlife and ecosystems while providing instruction for beginners.
Surfing, Windsurfing, and Kiteboarding
Charleston’s beaches — particularly Folly Beach — are hot spots for surfing enthusiasts. Surf schools provide lessons for beginners eager to catch their first wave, while experienced surfers can enjoy consistent swells along the coast. For those seeking more adrenaline-fueled activities, windsurfing and kiteboarding are also popular. Sullivan’s Island is a favored destination for kiteboarders due to its steady winds and open spaces. In addition, Charleston offers several other unique ways
to enjoy its waterways to the fullest. These include:
» Hydrofoil Lessons: For thrill-seekers looking to try something new, hydrofoil surfing provides an exhilarating experience above the water’s surface.
» EcoTours: Paddleboard or kayak ecotours immerse participants in Charleston’s natural habitats while promoting environmental awareness.
» Tiki Boat Cruises: Private tiki boat tours combine relaxation with sightseeing, offering a festive way to explore Charleston Harbor with friends or family.
Community and Lifestyle
Living on the water in Charleston fosters a sense of community among residents,
as they share a deep passion for outdoor recreation. Events such as paddle board races or fishing tournaments bring both locals and visitors together while celebrating the region’s maritime heritage. Moreover, Charleston’s mild climate ensures year-round access to these activities, making it an ideal location for water enthusiasts.
Whether you prefer the thrill of kiteboarding on Sullivan’s Island or the serenity of kayaking through tidal marshes at your own pace, life on the water here offers something for everyone.
Charleston’s unique combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and diverse recreational opportunities makes this a truly unique place for those drawn to aquatic adventures.

COASTAL CHARM
by PATRA ANN TAYLOR
UNCOVER THE UNIQUE CHARACTER, STUNNING SHORELINES, AND LOCAL TREASURES OF CHARLESTON’S VIBRANT BEACH COMMUNITIES.
Isle of Palms
Just north of Charleston, the picturesque Isle of Palms evolved from an ancient Native American hunting ground to a popular vacation destination for Charlestonians during the late 19th century. Known for its cleanliness and family-friendly environment, the Isle of Palms is home to a cadre of local shops and restaurants and hosts many island-centric events throughout the year, including its Shuck Fest, Front Beach Fest, and Holiday Street Festival.
One of the island’s most distinctive features is its seven miles of pristine sandy beach, an ideal location for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing. The gentle waves and undercurrents make the surf here safer for children, providing a relaxed environment for families; and its diverse wildlife — including dolphins, sea turtles, and various bird species — further adds to its family appeal.
Locations along the island’s Ocean Boulevard provide public access to the beach and offer plenty of public parking nearby. The Isle of Palms County Park offers access to a stretch of beautiful ocean frontage as well, with lifeguards on duty seasonally along designated swimming areas. Other amenities that enhance a

day of fun in the sun include a children’s playground, barbecue grills, picnic tables, public restrooms, sand volleyball courts, and wheelchair accessibility. Guests at Wild Dunes, a private resort community at the north end of Isle of Palms, can enjoy easy access to the beach via walking paths or short drives from their accommodations.
Sullivan’s Island
Sullivan’s Island, the Isle of Palms’ closest southern neighbor, is known for its unique blend of historical significance, natural
beauty, and vibrant community life. The island preserves its relaxed lifestyle through its strict preservation efforts that limit commercial developments, ensuring a tranquil environment away from the typical hustle and bustle of urban life.
The island features over two miles of beautiful sandy beaches perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and all manner of water activities. Scenic wooden walkways enhance access to nature, allowing visitors to enjoy biking, fishing, and nature walks complemented by the beach environment.

The historical significance of Sullivan’s Island includes its extensive military heritage.
Fort Moultrie, constructed of palmetto logs in 1776, became a central historical site in the region, playing a pivotal role in conflicts from the Revolutionary War through World War II. Today, the fort is part of the Fort Moultrie National Monument, where visitors can immerse themselves in the island’s extensive military history through detailed exhibits and films.
Notably, Edgar Allan Poe — a celebrated American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic — left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of the island’s citizenry. During his 1827–28 stay at Fort Moultrie, Poe’s experiences inspired his short story “The Gold Bug.” A former military battery on the island now houses the Edgar Allan Poe Library.
KNOWN AS ONE OF THE MOST ACCESSIBLE BEACHES ON THE CAROLINA COAST, VISITORS CAN ENJOY COLLECTING ANGEL WING SHELLS, BUILDING SANDCASTLES, OR SOAKING UP THE SUN ON THE ISLAND’S SIX MILES OF WIDE SANDY BEACHES.
Built in 1962, the Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, also known as the Charleston Light, is considered the most powerful lighthouse on the East Coast. Its modern triangular design sets it apart from traditional lighthouses, making it a sight worth seeing.
Folly Beach
Folly Beach, the closest beach community to historic Downtown Charleston, is celebrated for its laid-back, eclectic vibe, welcoming nature, and community-oriented events that embody the charm of a quintessential beach
town. With just over 2,000 full-time residents, Folly Beach attracts a diverse community of artists, musicians, and performers, making it a vibrant cultural hub. The local scene includes visual artists, jewelry makers, and songwriters who contribute to the island’s creative spirit.
Known as one of the most accessible beaches on the Carolina coast, visitors can enjoy collecting angel wing shells, building sandcastles, or soaking up the sun on the island’s six miles of wide sandy beaches. Known for having the best surf breaks on the East Coast, Folly Beach has also earned the
moniker “Surf Capital” of South Carolina.
On the west end of the island, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Folly River, Folly Beach County Park appeals to those looking for an assortment of amenities to enhance their day at the beach. The park features a snack bar, picnic areas, dressing areas, seasonal lifeguards, open-air outdoor showers, wheelchair accessibility, and beach chair, umbrella, and Boogie board rentals to round out the perfect beach outing.
The Folly Beach Pier, which extends over 1,045 feet into the Atlantic Ocean, is the ideal spot for fishing and taking in the magnificent view by day. By night, during the summer the pier transforms into a Moonlight Mixer, where visitors can mingle with locals to dance the night away.

Known for its stunning natural beauty and recreational opportunities, this private community features a diverse ecosystem that includes maritime forests and marshlands home to a variety of species. As a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, Seabrook Island sets the standard for environmental conservation efforts.

King Street Treasures
King Street from Broad to Calhoun is a half-mile stretch of one wonderful boutique after another. Many are luxury names — like Golden Goose, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, rag & bone, Alice + Olivia, and Love Shack Fancy — while others are local family business that date back all the way to the 1800s, some of which began as online shops created during the pandemic by a new wave of influencers.
Berlin’s, located at King and Broad Street, is one such store with a rich history woven into Charleston’s retail landscape. Founded
in 1883 by Henry Berlinski, an immigrant from Eastern Europe with a belief in timeless quality and good taste, the store has been a cornerstone of the city’s fashion scene for well over a century. to superior merchandise and impeccable service. While each generation may introduce new trends, the store’s commitment to excellence remains unchanged. Customers can trust Berlin’s to provide high-quality fashion with a personal touch, ensuring satisfaction for the lifetime of every garment.
A Storied History
Berlin’s was established on September 20, 1883, by Henry Berlinsky, an Eastern European immigrant who arrived in the United States with just $1.38 cents to his name. Determined to build a future, he began selling clothes from a cart, saving every cent until he could open his own store at the corner of King and Broad streets.
Since its founding, Berlin’s has been passed down through generations — from Sam and Ben Berlin to Henry and Alwyn Berlin, and now to Steve and Elaine Berlin. Throughout the years, the store has remained a trusted destination for those seeking fine clothing and exceptional service.
Timeless Fashion, Unmatched Quality
Today, Berlin’s continues to be synonymous with Charleston’s finest fashion, upholding the same values of timeless elegance and personalized service that Henry envisioned over a century ago. Whether shoppers are looking for a special occasion ensemble or a classic wardrobe staple, Berlin’s offers an unparalleled shopping experience in the heart of Charleston.

During the following years, Yancy collaborated with emerging artists, architects, and designers, gaining invaluable insights into high-end design. Recognizing a demand for lighting that blended artistry with responsibly sourced materials, she saw an opportunity to create something truly unique. In 2010, Yancy officially launched Ro Sham Beaux, a brand that has since grown into a creative force in the luxury lighting industry. The name Ro Sham Beaux was inspired by a childhood game, Rock, Paper, Scissors. Yancy overheard children playing and saying “Ro Sham Bo” on a plane, and the unique phrase stuck with her, later inspiring the brand’s name with a distinctive spelling.
From the beginning, Yancy sought to incorporate ecoconscious materials into her designs. Elements such as semiprecious stones, hemp, recycled glass, and rattan became integral to her collections — not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their lower environmental impact. This commitment to thoughtful material selection became a defining characteristic of Ro Sham Beaux, setting it apart in a market where quality craftsmanship and sustainability intersect.
Ro Sham Beaux is synonymous with bespoke lighting that seamlessly merges timeless elegance with modern sensibility. Each fixture is meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans in

Charleston, South Carolina. From chandeliers to sconces, Ro Sham Beaux’s designs emphasize attention to detail and the use of high-quality, responsibly sourced materials.
Customization is at the heart of Ro Sham Beaux’s design philosophy. Clients can personalize their fixtures, tailoring each element to fit their unique spaces and aesthetic preferences. Whether for a private residence, boutique store, or commercial setting, Ro Sham Beaux’s lighting serves as both a statement piece and a lasting investment. This dedication to craftsmanship and adaptability has made the brand a sought-after choice for discerning designers and homeowners alike.
Ro Sham Beaux demonstrates that luxury and responsible design can go hand in hand. With a steadfast commitment to durable craftsmanship, each fixture is meticulously crafted to endure, blending timeless elegance with heirloom-quality resilience. By focusing on expert artisanship and the use of materials with lower environmental impact, Ro Sham Beaux continues to shape the future of design with lighting that is both functional and enduring.
With over 15 years of success, Ro Sham Beaux is more than a lighting company — it’s a legacy. The brand continues to inspire the industry, creating pieces that reflect both the past and the future of design.

journey through the Lowcountry’s rich cultural heritage and artisanal traditions.
Dating back to the early 1800s, the Charleston City Market has been a cornerstone of local life for generations. In its early days, the market was primarily a bustling hub for foodstuffs, neatly divided into sections for beef, fish, and farm produce. More than just a simple shopping venue, the market also served as a social center where lower- and middle-class residents would gather to drink, play games, and exchange the news of the day.
The market honors its roots through a carefully curated selection of local artisans
and food vendors. Many products bear the “Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston” seal, ensuring visitors take home genuine local treasures to remember their trip by. The space also serves as a welcome shelter during rain showers or intense heat, and clean restrooms are always available — a practical amenity that seasoned travelers know to appreciate.
Perhaps the most iconic sight at the Charleston City Market, though, is the meticulous sewing of sweetgrass baskets — intricate works of art that represent one of the nation’s oldest handicrafts. Passed down through generations, this traditional coiled
basketry is now recognized as a symbol of Gullah Geechee cultural heritage.
While wandering the market, be sure to visit the Charleston Preservation Society shop, where you’ll find books, maps, and mementos that celebrate the city’s architectural and cultural heritage. Even better, this shop doesn’t just provide souvenirs — it’s an educational resource that helps support historic preservation throughout the city.

Fashion-conscious visitors won’t want to miss the Charleston Shoe Company, with locations both in the market and on lower King Street. Their footwear combines style with comfort — the perfect match for exploring Charleston’s cobblestone streets while offering what locals affectionately refer to as “bunion protection with style.”

Element Tree Essentials creates unique beauty products, including something you likely won’t find elsewhere: lotion candles. Stick your finger in and scoop up pure fragrant moisturizer for your hands, your face, or anywhere else!
Come Friday and Saturday evenings, the space comes alive in a totally new way as it transforms into the Night Market. CHARLESTON’S ART

STEEPED IN HISTORY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP, CHARLESTON’S SWEETGRASS BASKETS ARE MORE THAN JUST SOUVENIRS — THEY ARE A SYMBOL OF CULTURAL RESILIENCE, ARTISTRY, AND GULLAH TRADITION. DISCOVER THE CENTURIES-OLD PRACTICE THAT CONTINUES TO THRIVE IN THE HANDS OF SKILLED ARTISANS TODAY.
EbEvery day in the Charleston City Market, situated on Market Street between Meeting and East Bay Streets in Downtown Charleston, there are half a dozen Gullah sweetgrass basket artisans sewing, weaving, and continuing their cherished tradition. Sweetgrass baskets are one of the oldest and most significant African American art forms in the United States, brought to the Lowcountry by enslaved West Africans in the 17th century, and are one of our nation’s most prized cultural souvenirs. Every basket is an original piece of art, and they range in size from a small saucer to a grand wall-size display,
with prices running from below $50 into the thousands.
When enslaved people were brought from West Africa to the South Carolina coast, they brought this vital skill with them. Initially, these baskets served practical purposes on rice plantations, where they were used for winnowing rice — a process of separating the grain from its chaff.
The primary settlement area for this tradition was Christ Church Parish, now known as Mount Pleasant, where numerous rice plantations operated. Here, the skilled basket makers adapted local materials into

their craft, incorporating sweetgrass, bulrush, pine needles, and palmetto fronds into their designs. Today, those four materials are still gathered locally from marshes and forests and used to create every basket.
What once began as utilitarian items have gradually evolved into sought-after works of art. During the early 20th century, as rice cultivation declined, basket makers began creating more decorative pieces to sell to tourists. The Highway 17 corridor in Mount Pleasant became famous for its roadside basket stands where weavers would display their work. Today, a significant portion of Mount Pleasant Highway 17 has been designated by SC DOT as the Sweetgrass Basket Makers Highway; and in 2006, Governor Jim Hodges designated the sweetgrass basket-making art form as South Carolina’s Official Art Craft. The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s permanent collection even includes a sweetgrass basket made by Mary Jackson, whose finely detailed sculptural baskets first appeared at the Charleston City Market in 1980.
Today, sweetgrass basketry represents more than just a craft — it symbolizes cultural resilience and continuity. Sweetgrass basket artisans are women and men keeping a piece of history alive, such as Beverly Grant and Eric Vanderhorst, both of whom have been carrying on the basket-making tradition for over 50 years each. Having learned their craft from grandmothers who once had roadside stands on Highway 17, they continue the 400year tradition today by teaching their sons and daughters, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren the art of sewing a sweetgrass basket.

AbAt the quiet corner of Chuck Dawley Boulevard and Bowman Road in Mount Pleasant, there is an ever-present twinkling from the showroom windows of Carolina Lanterns & Lighting. Celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, this local gem has long brightened Lowcountry homes with distinctive lighting fixtures that seamlessly blend Southern charm with timeless craftsmanship.
Owned for the last five years by Janna and Kelly Hart, the radiant showroom at Carolina Lanterns is a staggering array of everything ranging from handcrafted copper gas lanterns to modern LED fixtures, outdoor landscape lighting solutions, and interior statement pieces that serve as functional art.
Some 20 years ago, the showroom on Chuck Dawley was redesigned and repurposed from a NAPA Auto Parts store to the current three-story signature lighting retail store by the previous owner and founder of Carolina Lanterns, Jan Clouse. The Harts, originally from Texas, later purchased the store from Clouse plus the warehouse and outlet store off Clements Ferry Road.
“Our No. 1 selling product is the handcrafted copper lantern,” said Manager and Director of Operations Kaitlyn Tassarotti. “We have customers come in every day and ask about our signature lamp. We have three coppersmiths who work with us to produce the lamps, and our lead time right now is about 8 to 10 weeks. The copper lanterns are certainly a piece of art.”

These unique copper lanterns are categorized by their mounts, the most popular being the wall mount, followed by the pendant mount, the post mount for the street light effect, and the yoke mount. All the lamps can be a true flickering gas light, powered by natural gas, propane, or electricity. For even more customization, customers can choose from two-, three-, or four-light clusters no matter the power source.
Known for its extensive selection of traditional, contemporary, and coastalinspired lighting fixtures, Carolina Lanterns & Lighting has long been a go-to resource for homeowners, interior designers, and builders throughout the Charleston area. Over the years, the Carolina Lanterns showroom staff has helped countless residents find the perfect illumination solutions for their Lowcountry homes.
“We have two different customers,” said Tassarotti. “The walk-in sale, [such as]
customers who want to replace a dining room lamp, and builder sales, which involves new construction or remodeling that may require decorative, task, and landscape lighting solutions. A builder group will call us, send us the plans for the project, and have the customers come in to select their lighting. We do have a ton of online orders for our lanterns. We ship all over the U.S., and we get a lot of orders from Canada and the Bahamas.”
In an age of online shopping and mass production, Carolina Lanterns & Lighting stands as a testament to the enduring value of local expertise, personalized service, and quality craftsmanship.
Carolina Lanterns & Lighting is located at 1362 Chuck Dawley Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. Their showroom is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Customers can also shop online at www.carolinalanterns.com.

IbIn Charleston, any meal could lure you into a captivating story told through centuries-old recipes, fresh-off-the-boat seafood, and a deep-rooted respect for the land and water that made it all possible. The Holy City’s hot-as-a-skillet dining scene is where rebels, romantics, and dedicated students of their culinary heritage craft dishes that are at once a tribute to the past and a vision for what the city can still conceive.

Benne wafers, crisp sesame cookies that can trace their origins back to West Africa, offer an elegantly delightful taste of the city’s multicultural influences. Of course, this list would not be complete without mentioning shrimp and grits, a dish that has evolved from humble breakfast item to ubiquitous menu staple. produce in unexpected recipes handed down from generation to generation. Likewise, Magnolia’s trailblazing proposal of refined, updated Southern menus made with traditional ingredients and served in an elegant setting made it a culinary landmark.
At the Swamp Fox Restaurant, located inside the storied Francis Marion Hotel, history is plated in the form of elevated Southern classics. Their version of shrimp and grits — made with heirloom stone-ground cornmeal from Geechie Boy Mill on nearby Edisto Island — is a prime example of how the city’s restaurants honor heritage while supporting local purveyors and pushing flavors forward. Stone-ground grits, unlike their instant
counterparts, retain the natural oils and flavors of the corn, resulting in a dish that is rich, creamy, and full of depth.
While farm-to-table has become common practice at restaurants across the country, Charleston’s eateries are also renowned for highlighting heirloom produce. This movement, which began in the 1990s and early 2000s, started with visionaries who simply wanted to share the flavors of their childhoods. Planters, growers, and chefs collaborated to bring back nearly extinct varietals like Jimmy red corn, heirloom sesame, Carolina gold rice, and Sea Island red peas, among others. These ingredients have since played a foundational role in the city’s food culture. But there have always been crowd favorites, never showing any sign of receding from the limelight.

Peach season, which kicks off around mid-May and ends in September, is highly anticipated by everyday people and those in the industry.
Renowned neighborhood bistro FIG (Food Is Good) was one of the earliest places where an emphasis on simplicity and the purity of flavors could be ordered and enjoyed. By relying on seasonality and showcasing the high quality of their locally sourced ingredients, the restaurant quickly became a cornerstone of Charleston’s culinary scene and has remained a favorite ever since.
While simplicity is widely celebrated, there’s something to be said for a little romance. Peninsula Grill at the Planter’s Inn offers an incomparable setting for a lavish feast. The self-proclaimed “most romantic dining

Slightly North of Broad is also beloved for its creative Lowcountry cuisine and warm, inviting bistro-style setting, as is the Iron Rose Bar & Restaurant, where classic Southern dishes can be savored in a historic garden.

Befitting a thoroughly Southern city with a long history, the barbecue here is not to be missed. Charleston boasts a rich barbecue scene with several standout establishments, including Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ, the pit master’s latest take on his family’s legendary contribution to the region: the Hemingway-based Scott’s Variety Store and Bar-B-Q. Stop by Swig & Swine for a diverse menu of smoked meats or Lewis Barbecue for dishes with a more Texan flavor.
Seafood and Coastal Foodways
Charleston’s seafood is also proudly a local product — sourced from some of the most pristine waterways in the country. The Wando River, Stono River, and Ashley River are all teeming with oysters, shrimp, and blue crabs, while the ACE Basin supplies the local

restaurant industry with some of the best fish and shellfish in the region.
The city’s coastal waters provide an endless supply of inspiration for the city’s chefs. Hyman’s Restaurant, a bastion of local

seafood, is a Charleston institution set across multiple floors in a historic building. It’s the rare eatery whose casual ambience and thoroughly satisfying dishes make it a mustdo for visitors and a beloved icon for locals.

MODERN SOUTHERN EATERY

The Longboard in nearby Sullivan’s Island proposes a heavily seafood-centric menu, offering a variety of dishes inspired by coastal regions worldwide. The airy, beachy eatery brings innovative Caribbean culinary trends to the South Carolina coast specializing in fresh, vibrant seafood plates like razor-sharp crudo, ceviches, and shareable plates like pork belly with pineapple, tamarind, and poblano, or whitefish croquettes with coconut, green curry, and aioli. Of course, the briny oysters served raw and grilled, represent longstanding local traditions; and the inventive small plates that feature them pay tribute to the region’s fisheries.
If you are in town from late fall to early spring, you are just in time for one of the most beloved traditions in Charleston: oyster season. During these months, oyster roasts pop up across the city, as Charleston’s plump, salty bivalves — harvested from Capers Inlet and Bulls Bay — are best enjoyed roasted over an open fire and served with cocktail sauce, saltines, and hot sauce. The roasts are open, relaxed, and characteristic of everything that’s most loved about dining like (and with) the locals. Enjoy a slightly different take on the local love for oysters at Raw 167, serving fresh New England–style seafood and, of course, savory oysters in a lively, casual setting.
Housed in a 1940s retired naval building, few places are better suited to celebrating

Charleston’s waterfront heritage than the harbor-front Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar. Delight in fresh catches, a flavorful raw bar, and jaw-dropping seafood towers along with scenic views.

serves up seasonal dishes and craft cocktails just a block from the beach. With its seven cozy rooms, it exudes casual Southern charm that proposes a different take on the Holy City — from across the bay in Mount Pleasant.
A little farther east on the Isle of Palms, you can pair spectacular views of the Atlantic with fresh seafood from an inspired selection of diverse local dishes at The Boathouse at Breach Inlet. Vintage rowboats adorn the ceiling of this relaxed and stylish waterfront restaurant, setting the stage for romantic dates and special celebrations.
For an equally relaxed vibe, head over to Ty’s Roadside Coastal Kitchen where the ambience may be laid-back, but the flavors are bold. Make a pit stop when the mood strikes for Maryland-style crabcakes, seafood fettuccine, or the catch of the day made over an open-fire grill. If your group is not in agreement on seafood, the place also serves up smash burgers and an excellent selection of wood-fired pizzas.
From Kitchen Creations to Cocktail Culture
Charleston’s beverage scene is every bit as dynamic as its food scene, with bars and restaurants serving up inspired drinks that celebrate Southern flavors. At The Ordinary, a seafood hall and oyster bar that celebrates the coastal Carolinas, the cocktail menu features classics with a twist — like their signature rum punch made with house-infused spiced rum. Meanwhile, at The Cocktail Club, a speakeasy-style bar on Upper King Street, handcrafted cocktails incorporate local ingredients like honey from Bee City Honey Farm and fresh herbs grown right on the bar’s rooftop garden. You can always set your sights higher and head to the eighth floor of The Dewberry, where the hotel’s Southern Reimagined ethos gets a playful twist and squeeze at The Citrus Club. The aptly named lounge serves citrus-inspired cocktails crafted

with precision and creativity from Charleston's highest rooftop bar.
If you want to chase your exceptionally made cocktail with something a little more substantial, Halls Chophouse is the place for a fancy night out with prime cuts and high-end seafood dishes. Make reservations for a date night or meet a few friends there and enjoy the live music — either with dinner or during their renowned Sunday gospel brunch.
Heading right to the source also works in a city that has cultivated a community of people who care deeply about making food and drink that matters and people who genuinely appreciate quality products. Whiskey lovers should make a pilgrimage to High Wire Distilling Co., where small-batch spirits are crafted from heirloom grains like Jimmy red corn. Offering a smooth, caramellaced sip that pairs perfectly with a plate of barbecued pork or a slice of pecan pie, High Wire’s flagship bourbon has earned national acclaim. Other standouts in the
city include Firefly Distillery — famous for inventing the sweet tea vodka — and Holy City Brewing, a local favorite.
Honoring the Past While Shaping the Future
Charleston’s food scene is a rich mosaic of history, innovation, and pure Southern soul. It’s a city where chefs honor the past while boldly reimagining the future — where every dish is crafted with a deep love for the region’s flavors and every meal is a tribute to the land and sea.
With a culinary calendar that includes events like the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, and the World Grits Festival in nearby St. George, food lovers have ample opportunities to celebrate Southern traditions. Whether you’re indulging in a bowl of time-honored she-crab soup or sipping a meticulously crafted cocktail, you’re not just dining in Charleston — you’re experiencing its story, one bite at a time.

This spirit extends into his advice for diners to venture beyond their comfort zones. Whether it’s escargot bursting with garlic and kasseri cheese or the vibrant flavors of Prime Beef Tartare, he invites guests to embrace the

unexpected and discover culinary delights that lie right on the menu.
It also segues seamlessly into the final moments of each dining experience at Grill 225. Elliott’s roots as the executive pastry chef uniquely influence the restaurant’s dessert offerings, elevating them into unforgettable courses that complement the restaurant’s bold steaks.
Rejecting the notion of small, delicate endings, Elliott instead crafts desserts designed to impress and linger in the diner’s memory long after the meal ends, such as the restaurant’s decadent chocolate mousse cake and signature banana bread pudding. To Elliott, dessert is the grand finale — a powerful statement that should command attention.

Elliott finds joy in preparing hearty soups and freshly baked breads for his kitchen staff, a gesture rooted in his belief that great cooking is an act of care to be shared with everyone. His biscuits — a cherished recipe passed down by his grandmother — have become a staff favorite, embodying the warmth and authenticity that define his approach.
When not preparing menus and briefing the staff on the evening’s service, Elliott spends his time with family, enjoying the company of his sister, nieces, and nephews while sharing meals with them and his aging mother. He can also be found with close friends, often planning and preparing nourishing meals for them, too. For Elliott, the kitchen is a place of creativity and connection, a place where people naturally come together.

bMAGEE CELEBRATES
THE SPIRIT OF CHARLESTON WITH EVERY
DISH.
MMike Magee, chef de cuisine at The Longboard on Sullivan’s Island, has built his culinary identity around vibrant coastal flavors and local ingredients, inspired by his Southern roots and Caribbean flair. From shucking oysters to leading the kitchen as chef de cuisine, Magee’s journey is one of dedication, growth, and a genuine love for the craft.

Magee’s culinary passion was ignited early, in the warmth of his grandmother’s kitchen in Landrum, South Carolina, where weekend breakfasts and bustling family gatherings became his training ground. Helping her prepare meals for loved ones instilled in him the joy of creating dishes that nourish and delight others — a principle he still carries into his professional kitchen to this day.
After moving to Charleston in 2019 to attend culinary school, Magee quickly gravitated towards fresh seafood and the diverse flavors that Charleston’s proximity to multiple productive waterways affords. At just 23 years old, he has already made impressive strides, finding mentorship under the previous chef de cuisine at The Longboard, John Coleman. His culinary approach emphasizes fresh, sustainably sourced seafood, directly supporting local fishers and purveyors — a hallmark of the restaurant’s commitment to

the highest quality and to being a steward of the community.
As a result, the menu mirrors Magee’s own culinary explorations, highlighting creative dishes like tuna poke, grilled salmon in a flavorful pho-style broth topped with chili crunch, and the ever-popular shrimp and grits, a brunch menu favorite. Magee takes special pride in preparing whole fish like beeliner snapper or yellowtail, skillfully grilled or fried, creating an experience that showcases simplicity and freshness and captures the essence of Carolina coastal dining.
Magee’s appreciation for Charleston extends far beyond his professional kitchen. He finds joy in outdoor adventures around the
Lowcountry, especially fishing and kayaking. His ideal Charleston day begins watching the sunrise on the beach, followed by exploring the rich historic charm of downtown. It concludes with decidedly local flavor: a fresh oyster dinner at The Longboard — enjoying, supporting, and highlighting ingredients sourced from local farms in nearby Folly Beach.
Chef Magee sees the city’s culinary future brightening once more, with locally owned establishments bringing renewed vigor and quality to Charleston’s dining scene. As he continues to make strides at The Longboard, Magee aims to be an integral part of both honoring and shaping the next chapter in Charleston’s vibrant culinary story.

For decades, Charleston has captivated visitors with its historic charm, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture. The Holy City is not just a top vacation destination, though. It’s also one of the most desirable places to call home. Many who visit the Charleston Coast as vacationers end up falling head over heels for the city’s lifestyle and scenery, leading them to either relocate permanently or invest in a second home.
Dunes Properties, a boutique real estate firm that has served as a stronghold in Charleston’s luxury real estate market since 1989, has guided countless buyers through this transition. With their deep understanding of the Charleston market, the firm specializes in high-end homes, luxury properties, and vacation rentals, making them an invaluable resource for those looking to turn their vacation dreams into a reality.
“Many of our clients begin as vacation guests in our rental program, and when they’re ready to transition to full- or part-time living in Charleston, we are their preferred choice to make that happen,” says Vannessa Carter, a Realtor® with Dunes Properties. “With four offices and over 60 agents, we provide personalized service no matter where in Charleston you wish to call home.”

Luxury Real Estate Market
The demand for luxury real estate in Charleston has only grown over the years. From historic mansions south of Broad to stunning waterfront retreats on Kiawah and Isle of Palms, this charming Southern city offers an array of high-end homes that appeal to buyers from across the country.
“Charleston attracts buyers from all over, each bringing their own standards of luxury
shaped by their unique locations. As a result, our high-end builders strive to stay at the forefront of innovation, utilizing advanced building materials to withstand our climate and incorporating design elements that are truly magazine-worthy,” Carter explains.
The region’s luxury market is diverse, blending historic charm with modern elegance. Many buyers are drawn to the careful preservation of Charleston’s past, as
seen in stunning homes featuring centuriesold architecture, intricate ironwork, and grand piazzas. However, contemporary luxury homes are also in high demand, boasting state-of-the-art smart home technology, open concept designs, and resort-style amenities.
Carter adds, “It’s fascinating to see how, in a city renowned for its rich history, builders have also excelled in creating striking modern homes. In Charleston, we truly have something for everyone.”
Why Luxury Buyers Choose Charleston
Charleston is more than just a beautiful place to live — it’s a lifestyle. The city offers a perfect blend of relaxation and activity, with boating, fishing, championship golf courses, and some of the best beaches on the East Coast. Adding further to its appeal, Charleston is also home to award-winning restaurants, high-end shopping, and worldclass medical care, making it ideal for both primary residents and second-home buyers.
“Charleston is in high demand, especially over the last decade, where its beauty and one-of-a-kind charm has been so prominently featured on social media. It also doesn’t hurt

that we consistently win the awards from national publications and groups like Travel + Leisure, Southern Living, Forbes, Michelin, and The James Beard Foundation. People are eager to turn their Charleston dream into a reality; and food and culture are a big part of it,” says Carter. “You can’t talk about why people are drawn to this area without mentioning the outstanding restaurants and the nonstop festivals like Spoleto Festival USA and Charleston Wine + Food. It’s an embarrassment of riches here!”
Many vacation rental guests fall so in love with Charleston’s relaxed yet refined way of life that they decide to purchase their own beach retreat. With strong rental potential and high

appreciation rates, a second home on the picturesque Charleston Coast isn’t just a lifestyle investment — it’s a smart financial decision.
A Showcase of Charleston Luxury
Charleston’s luxury homes are known for their attention to detail and high-end amenities, and Carter’s listing at 341 Bridgetown Pass is no exception.
“This home is a true masterpiece, crafted by a Prism Award–winning builder. Every element of the design reflects elegance and functionality,” Carter notes.

TIPS and INFO
THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME PRACTICAL TIPS AND USEFUL INFORMATION TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR VISIT TO CHARLESTON.

Population
Charleston is the largest city in South Carolina, with a population of 155,369, according to data from 2023. The city has had steady growth in recent years. The population is also significantly higher during the tourist season that stretches from March to November.
Neighborhoods
The entire Charleston peninsula, which comprises downtown Charleston, is made up of many vibrant and historic neighborhoods, from North Central to South of Broad. This entire area is worthy of exploration and is the highlight of most people’s trips to the city. However, several hidden gems exist beyond the peninsula and in the suburbs as well, including Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant, and North Charleston.
Getting Here
By Car: Getting to Charleston by car is no problem from anywhere in the country, really.

Did you know?
Charleston is home to a number of firsts in America. Founded in 1670 by English settlers and named after King Charles II, it’s the oldest city in South Carolina and home to the first public college, museum, and playhouse in the United States. It’s also home to the first golf club in America, and, notoriously, it’s where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired, at Fort Sumter.
The major interstates of I-95 and I-26 intersect to the north and west of Charleston, and then I-26 and I-526 bring you in closer. From there, it’s just a matter of taking the highways and roads to your desired destinations.
By Boat: Charleston has a water taxi service that takes you to various points on and around the peninsula, as well as sightseeing cruises and private charters. Several other water tours, fishing charters, dinner cruises, and more are also available.
By Plane: Getting to Charleston by plane is also no problem. Domestic and international flights are available through both major and smaller airlines into Charleston International Airport. Most major cities offer direct flights right to Charleston without connections.
By Bus: Bus transportation to the Charleston area is available from service providers such as Greyhound, Silver Meteor, and more.
Getting Around
Car Rentals: Major car rental companies operate at the Charleston International Airport, as well as various locations around the city.
You can even rent a street-legal electric vehicle from Carolina Rides to explore Charleston in style and comfort, and they will deliver the vehicle directly to your hotel or rental property. Reserve your eco-friendly ride at www.carolinaridesrentals.com or call 844-213-7433.
Public Transportation: Charleston’s public transportation system is known as CARTA, and
J. Kevin Foltz (3)
it offers a variety of bus routes for easy access to the city. A popular option for tourists is the Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH), which takes you to various spots around downtown Charleston free of charge.
Walking: Of course, one of the best ways to see Charleston is by walking around the incredible neighborhoods and parks. You can also take part in a guided walking tour for a bit of history and entertainment as you walk. Many options are available, including garden and architecture tours as well as ghost tours.
Charleston Visitors Center
To make the most of your trip to Charleston, plan on the Charleston Visitors Center being your first stop to gather information, buy tour and attraction tickets, and arrange transportation to all your desired destinations.
375 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403 800-868-8118 www.charlestoncvb.com
Weather
Charleston weather remains enjoyable year-round, with average highs around 60 degrees in the winter and in the mid-80s in the summer. The peak times to visit are generally regarded as March through May and September through November, but there really isn’t a bad time for a trip to Charleston, especially if you’re coming from a colder climate.
Accommodations
Charleston offers a wide variety of lodging options, from charming bed and breakfasts to luxury resorts to vacation rentals to all varieties of hotels and motels. Prices tend to be higher downtown than elsewhere in the city, but there are still deals to be had if you want to stay where the action is.
Dining
Of course, dining is a huge part of the scene in downtown Charleston, and you’re sure to find a variety of options to match the creative vibrance of the city itself. Whether you want fancy or down to earth, seafood or barbecue, or anything in between, a wide variety of famous and award-winning restaurants call Charleston home.
Festivals
Charleston has a variety of festivals throughout the year. Whether you enjoy music, homes and gardens, antiques, food, wine, books, art, and more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Check out our Calendar of Events in the History, Arts, and Culture section of this publication for exciting events taking place during your visit.
