Dear visitors,
All about us and you...
A warm welcome to North Somerset Arts Week 2019. This 9th biennial arts event includes over 40 venues within the North Somerset region.
We think art should reflect its community and North Somerset Arts is a good case in point.
This 10 day event offers you a fantastic opportunity to explore the abundance of creative talent in our region. Experience a huge variety of contemporary and traditional art, performance pieces and applied arts and crafts for everyone to enjoy. Our intent for Arts Week is to celebrate creativity, and advocate the cultural value and positive impact it has on the communities in our region. We invite you to explore North Somerset, to visit areas and artists you’ve never seen before, connect and have conversations and most of all be inspired! Special thanks must go to our sponsors Sustainable Kitchens and University Centre Weston. Download our NEW Arts Week app, details on page 6. Founded back in 2002 when many people mistakenly thought North Somerset was a cultural desert, North Somerset Arts revealed that there is a wealth of talent within our community. Joining it up and making it visible in an area of the size of North Somerset, with four large separate towns and a host of smaller communities with strong identities, is a challenging task - however this is what we chose to do. Our work is framed by the following aims and ambitions:
SUSTAINABILITY: Become a strong and cohesive organisation. PARTNER: Increase engagement with local business, community groups and councils to demonstrate the benefits of how the arts can support the region. ENABLE: Provide services that enable the participation of people of all ages and backgrounds in cultural activities. ENGAGE: Educate and engage people of all ages and backgrounds by using the arts for cultural reflection and promotion of North Somerset communities.
Social Media For NSAW19 we are launching an app to help you search, locate and navigate disciplines and venues in your vicinity, together with full profiles of all the individual artists. We are also on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook - so look out for @NSomersetArts

We know there are many arts and performance groups throughout the communities of North Somerset. There is a very rich cultural offering at local level, covering music, drama, poetry and the visual arts. Why not work with us next time in 2021? Together we can turn North Somerset Arts Week into North Somerset Arts Festival. Really showing the vitality, warmth and creative energy of our region! If you wish to work with us, either as an individual or a group, please contact us at: hello@northsomersetarts.org We’d love to hear from you!

2018 NSA Members and Open Exhibitions In April 2018 North Somerset Arts were delighted to support Nailsea Town Council in the launch of their community hub ‘Sixty Five’ on Nailsea High Street. We created a hugely successful rolling two month exhibition by 43 artists including activities, workshops and installations. In September 2018 we returned to Weston Old Town Quarry to host the popular 20 x 20 Open Exhibition, giving an opportunity for all local artists to exhibit. In pursuit of our partnership and inclusivity aims, NSA brought together Nicholas Nikiforou and Clevedon Pier to support anti-bullying week with the exhibition ‘A Big Breath Of Fresh Air.’
ADVOCACY: Provide a voice for the arts in North Somerset. HUB: Become an umbrella organisation for the arts in North Somerset. 4

HeArts @ Portbury Church Heritage and the Arts are at the heart of this beautiful 12th century building in Portbury which is steeped in local history. Romans lived here and there is a Stone Age standing stone. If you are an Artist, Musician or Poet you can rent our space to work, teach, practice or perform. Find inspiration here and help us to build a centre for the whole community to enjoy. As well as the art on show, during the weekends of Arts Week you can have a history tour, climb the church tower to admire the view and go for a walk in the nearby beautiful bluebell woods.

Help, we need friends! North Somerset Arts is a fairly young organisation, having been founded in 2002. For those of us that have been involved since the start it seems a long time, and hard work to survive, given the uncertainty of arts funding. We now need a strong ‘Friends Organisation’ to support emerging artists and to help us build a ‘Participatory Arts Foundation’ throughout North Somerset. We would love to bring more opportunities for the public to engage their creativity, right in the heart of their own communities. For example, promoting ‘Pop up Galleries’ and ‘Artists in Residence’ in your high street, whilst working with local people, schools and youth projects to create art that reflects the vitality and life of your community. We know there is already so much talent within North Somerset, it just needs more visibility. You can help us to form a Friends Community - we don’t just want your money, we need your voice and we want to hear your views.
Membership benefits include: •Free admission to all Arts Meets •Invitations to special events including NSA members private views and events •Free event, job and artist call-out listings in our newsletter and on the Events and Opportunities page of our website (these are currently free to everyone but charges will be introduced to non-members and friends soon) •Access to our exclusive Members’ area (coming soon) •Advanced notice of member workshops taking place •You will also receive a copy of all our exhibition brochures through the post You can join as a Friend for just £30 per year or £50 for 2 years or you could consider a Sponsorship package or fund a prize. If you are interested please don’t delay and send an email headed: ‘I want to help’ to hello@northsomersetarts.org Many Thanks, Teän Kirby Chair of Trustees, North Somerset Arts
Enter the Arts Week treasure trail and win a piece of Art worth £150* How to take part At every Arts Week venue, you will find a letter. Collect all these letters to reveal an anagram of the name of a famous painting and the artist who painted it. The more venues you visit, the more letters you will collect to help you solve the anagram. To make it easier, we will be giving some bonus clues on the North Somerset Arts Facebook page! So find our page and give us a ‘Like’. This will not only help you to keep up to date with the latest Arts Week news from the venues all around the region, but we will also introduce you to our artists and their work. All correct entries received by midnight on the closing date of 20th May 2019 will go into a draw and a name drawn at random. The lucky winner will be able to select an artwork from their favourite Arts Week Artist up to the value of £150*. So keep a note of your favourites as you go round. The Treasure Trail is FREE to enter, and entry is by submission of a visitor feedback form. Your favourite venue can also win a prize if you vote for it below.
