Northern Suburbs Netball Association was founded in 1969 by Monte nuns and it was decided that they should extend the competition to all the Lower North Shore. Although we are bordered by two other Associations (Manly and Ku-Ring-Gai) the nuns felt that there was enough interest in the Lower North Shore to warrant our own competition. In 1970 Willoughby Council granted the netballers 2 grass courts at Flat Rock Oval (which were shared with the local rugby teams) and 2 courts at Forsyth Park in Neutral Bay by North Sydney Council. In 1971 with numbers growing to 700 players application was made to affiliate with the NSW Netball Association. By this time Willoughby Council had given the Association six courts at Flat Rock Oval but no amenities and 2 tents served as the only shelter “command post”. Membership numbers increased, and netball was then moved on to Hallstrom Park with 11 courts and then in 1979 to Bales Park which had 20 grass courts and still no toilet facilities until 1981 – hurrah! In 1988 we were moved onto the BiCentennial reserve site we currently occupy today. NSNA has competed in every State Championship since 1971 and have had all teams in Championship division (with a few hiccups) since 1987. NSNA gives thanks to all those women (and a few men) who helped shape our Association and the dedication and determination it has taken for netball in the Lower North Shore to be established,

Executive Report On behalf of the Executive of NSNA I present this report we present this report of the activities on Northern Suburbs Netball Association. To make sure that the largest netball Association in NSW runs efficiently takes a great many hands and we acknowledge those people that have helped this season and given of their time and skills so generously. Special thanks as ever to the NSNA Executive: Ineke Walker - VP, Mosman Lynne Robertson – Treasurer, St Michael’s Christy Hoole – Secretary, LCPS Toni Palmer – Competition Convenor, St Leonard’s, LM Eileen Hukins – Umpire Convenor, Monte, LM Suzanne Sayle – Coaching Convenor, Loreto Melissa Fisher – NetSetGo Convenor, WPS Maureen Sinclair – Representative Convenor, Mosman, LM We would like to acknowledge the work of the MPIO, Toni Field LM and very special thank you to Marie Cherote LM our Business Administrator and Donna Baker OAM – Loreto, LM, Ground Convenor – without whom the place would fall apart! Thanks to Jenny Gage – Roseville, LM and Director of North Shore United, our Premier League Franchise partnership team with Ku-Ring-Gai who has served NSU since its inception in 2014. Jenny took on extra duties this year at NSU (above all the finances and organisation of NSU clinics) as Manager of the winning 20s side. Following “best practice” governance processes Jenny will be stepping down from the NSU Board this year and the Association thanks her for representing the interests of NSNA and our players and securing a continuing pathway to higher level netball. Congratulations to Jenny on her appointment as manager of the NNSW 17s for the 2019 season. Thank you also to those committees who keep the place functioning Selections, Grading and I would say of special note here to the Umpires Committee who have done a wonderful job this year organising panels and mentoring all our budding umpires. As we enter our 50th year we head into it with much the same problems as our first year – still looking for more courts to run our competition on and still trying to hold on to the ones we have. On the matter of the Beaches Link Tunnel and the threat of a drilling site being our “neighbour” for five years – the Executive will be monitoring the progress of the tunnel and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to answer our “call to arms” and wrote to the Mayor and/or to the Premier to protest the proximity of the tunnel drilling to our courts. It is never our intention to be political, we are after all a sporting group but there are times when hoping people will do what’s right just won’t do! Thanks everyone and see you again in 2019 when we celebrate 50 years of bringing netball to the Community. Glenys Paranihi President, 2018

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE In the Australian honours system appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service. This year Sharon Kelly and Donna Baker were recognized for their continued dedication and services to sport in the Queen’s Birthday Honours with OAM’s. Megan Anderson, Director of Coaching was also recognized for her amazing skill and knowledge, being added as a specialist coach to the Australian Diamonds team. NSNA recognize their skill and value and thank them for their tireless efforts and service on our behalf.

Sharon Kelly, OAM for services to Netball

Officials and umpires may be overlooked when it comes to role models, but they provide the same significance as players and coaches alike. Step forward one of the games great and most recognizable umpires; Sharon Kelly. Sharon can certainly be considered as one of the games great role models. Sharon was awarded Best Netball Umpire in the World 11 years in a row and Best Umpire in Australia for 14 years. She currently holds the position at NSNA of Director or Umpiring, at NNSW she was appointed Umpire Coach in 2015 and in 2017 was appointed High Performance Umpire Coach by Netball Australia. In February Sharon was appointed by the International Netball Federation to the International Umpires’ Award Testing Panel. Sharon Kelly has spent her whole netball life as a “Norths” girl. since she started playing age 8, where her mother Joan Burge, Life Member and her sister were playing, and she still serves this Association today we are honoured to call her ours.

Donna Baker, OAM for services to sport in a range of roles Donna Baker (Loreto & NSNA Life Member) was recognised for her service to sport over many years. A member of the Association since 1979, Donna has been recognised with every award NSNA has and some of them twice! Her willingness to give of her time is amazing and the fact that no job is too small for her from organising Loreto netball and umpires to tracking down the person who removed the soap dispenser from the toilets, to dressing in pink for our Pink Round – we have all benefited from Donna’s sense of service and duty. Along with netball at NSNA and Loreto, Donna is involved in many other sports and organising committees including New South Wales Interschools Snowsports (since 1987) and Catholic Girls Secondary Schools Sports Association (since 1989).

Megan Anderson, Specialist Coach, NSW Swifts, & Australia, 2018 NNSW Hall of Fame Inductee Her bio says that Megan Anderson was the first athlete to debut for Australia in the 21st century on Australia’s tour of South Africa in 2000. Megan was a Diamond for 6 years and won 3 national titles with the Sydney Swifts. Megan retired in 2011 to take up coaching. She joined North Sydney Seniors in 2013 and in 2015 was appointed NSNA’s first Director of Coaching and oversees our very successful Coach the Coaches program. This year as well as the Diamonds and the Swifts, Megan has coached our Metro 1 team who finished runner-up in Division 1 and our State Championship 17s side who finished 3rd equal. Megan said “It’s about creating an environment that allows the group to work hard, succeed and enjoy the experience. This is the ethos she carries and imparts in all her coaching duties and we are very pleased that she has chosen NSNA to share her talents with.

COMPETITIONS REPORT This year Northern Suburbs offered 4 competitions – Winter, Twilight (Summer), Indoor Tuesday & Wednesday night and Tuesday morning. We did offer a chance to include Fast5 should there be a demand but have had little interest in it – although it is a great training tool (we must get some return from the pink lines). In 2019 NSNA will be offering a Come and Try day for boys 12 and under and Walking Netball.

WINTER COMPETITION (APRIL – SEPTEMBER)

Juniors (ages 10-17) continue to make up 50% of our total membership. Seniors (age 18+ years) 26% and NetSetGo (7-10yrs) 18%, the balance being non-players. In terms of numbers the competition continues to be dominated by the local school clubs and interest continues to be strong. This year we had 569 teams (2017 484, 2016 554, 2015 - 505) made up of 322 Junior teams, 135 Senior teams, 35 Cadet teams and 77 NetSetGo teams. We also welcomed Cammeraygyl Netball Club to our Association. NETSETGO

NetSetGo (7-9-year olds) continues to be a popular competition. It also continues to struggle to find a permanent home. At present NSG is being played on 5 courts, 3 bowling greens and one grass court. These games are all based in North Sydney and are being enjoyed by a by parents and children alike (does it have anything to do with the hot donuts and coffee at the Greens??). NSNA continue to liaise with neighbouring councils for more court space. The biggest highlight in the NSG calendar would be the Gala Day which for the second year has been played “at the big courts”. This year we were very lucky to secure a guest appearance from Maddy Proud which added to the festive atmosphere. At the time of writing NetSetGo had no nominations to run the competition for 2019. If you feel that you have the time and patience it takes to run this competition, please do not hesitate to let your light shine!

SPECIAL AWARDS Every year NSNA and the Burge Family recognise those people that have given their valuable time and energy into the running and operation of the Association and/or its Affiliated Clubs.

Ineke Walker being presented the 2018 President's Award from Glenys Paranihi, for her outstanding contribution to Communications, Sponsorship and all other duties and roles including coaching at a club and Association level

Lynne Robertson-St Michaels being presented the Eddie & Mary Britt Appreciation Award from Toni Field-Lane Cove, LM. Lynne is her harshest critic and not appreciative of her own efforts. Lynne’s common sense to the Association’s finances has been fantastic and she competitions. The hours spent sorting payments and invoices is certainly one of the “unsung” positions of the Association not to mention the all-important counting of the sticks!

Lyn Wells-Rangers (L) and Alison Bird-MCC (R) receiving the Joan Burge Memorial Trophy from Fay Drayton, LM. This award donated by the Burge family recognises those people who work behind the scenes tirelessly for their clubs. The hours these women contribute to the success of their respective clubs can be seen in their strength in numbers and successes on the netball court with both clubs having outstanding seasons in 2018.

Millie Matthews-Willoughby United (Left) and Lucy Matthews-Northbridge (Right) joint recipients of the Joe Hockey Junior Encouragement Award from Trent Zimmerman, MP. Millie plays in the unstoppable Willoughby United 14A team & is also in the NSNA rep program and umpires & coaches for her club and a great team member. Lucy Matthews (no relation) umpires for her club and has coached for 2 years. As well as this Lucy is an outstanding junior player has been in the NSNA program since 11, made Sydney Netball Academy for past 2 years and is GS for the 15s State Age team. Lucy broke her wrist at State Age and became the best supporter of her team even though she was bitterly disappointed at missing her last State Age.

NSNA Annual Report 2018 / 9

April Butler-LaneCoveWest receiving the Pat Clarke Service Award from June Haynes-Willoughby United LM, in recognition of her service to both the Association through her coaching roles (past State Age and Champs), Metro and NID 2018. April is also an Association selector and has been an Executive member and always ready to help if the Association is short of a hand on the weekends. April also coaches her LCW teams. LaneCoveWest is the second club April has helped get off the ground (XS being the other) and she works very hard to see these clubs flourish.

Stephanie Vitlitch-Monte 15A receiving Junior Club of the Year on behalf of Monte from Monty Hodgesmember for Life! Monte also won Senior Club of the Year

Nicole Christensen awarding Glenys Paranihi the Coach of the Year Award. Glenys has had a great year of coaching in 2018. As well as Northbridge 12A, 15A, A2 and NSNA Metro 6, Glenys was lucky enough to assist Megan Anderson at State Champs and consumer of confectionary for Tania Dorahy and Monte 1 (Note for next year TD-Peaches & Cream definitely the crowd favourite!)

Marie Cherote-Northbridge, LM receiving the Della Hodges Memorial trophy on behalf of her champion 11A team from Mel Fisher-WPS and Exec Member

INDOOR TUESDAY MORNING

Although this competition has been running for 20 years it is a new addition to the NSNA family as it was previously run by the Willoughby Leisure Centre. Administered by Melissa Fisher it is a great way for women to get back into the game or take up the game. It is very flexible competition run to provide maximum enjoyment and exercise, without ferocity. Currently 6 teams compete in a round robin format in school terms for 38 weeks of the year and in 2019 we hope to trial Walking Netball to encourage older people, people with “netball” knees and just those who don’t run any more a chance to enjoy the game.

UMPIRES All up a good year for umpires at NSNA. With the ability to have a larger committee it meant that we were able to spread the work around. Many thanks to the Committee members and to the Senior Umpire Coordinator, Janet Torney. The enthusiasm was great and together we managed to award 5 National B badges, 32 National C badges and more than 250 umpiring levels. Thank you also to the umpires who were not on the Committee but came and assisted when they were able. Congratulations to the winners of the umpiring awards on Grand Final Day

: Thank you Lori BauerWilloughby United, LM for presenting all the Umpire Awards

Most Outstanding Umpire: Nikki Kundrus-Little

Junior Umpire of the Year: Co-winners: Meg Wells (Rangers) and Charlotte Versace (Monte)

Senior Umpire of the Year: Katrina Walker (Mosman)

National B Badges: Claudia Sayle (Loreto), Bella Woods (Monte), Kate Robertson (Monte)

A huge thank you to Sharon Kelly for her input and guidance to the Committee, as well as for the work with umpires in the A1/A2 Development Pool. We are so lucky to have Sharon at Norths! Thank you to those Club Convenors who took the lead on development of umpires in 2018 and a shout out to those clubs who did nothing about umpires at all. All clubs should be developing umpires who are an integral part of our game. Finally thank you to those umpires who have represented the Association at NNSW events such as State Championships, State Age Championships, NSW State Cup, Metro League, Night Interdistrict and Fast Five. We are fortunate, indeed, to have such a pool of umpires.

… a look back Bi-Centennial Reserve The 1988 Night Competition had been held at BiCentennial Reserve under very difficult conditions with Portaloos and without water. However, the courts and lights were marvellous. As the night competition only involved approximately 25% of our playing members, it was the executive’s recommendation that it would not be possible to hold the winter competition at Bi-Centennial Reserve without sufficient amenities and that we should remain at Bales Park until the appropriate amenities were provided. However, F. Drayton had advised Willoughby Council that day that we were not prepared to move to Bi-Centennial Reserve until the amenities are of an appropriate standard. The Council then said they were prepared to install temporary showers and toilets connected to a sewer system. Lock up demountables would be provided to serve as temporary storage and canteen. Electricity and water is now on site. F. Drayton felt that the decision to move or not should come from our Council meeting and invited the delegates to discuss their ideas. B. McLean moved, “that NSNA move to Bi-Centennial Reserve for the 1989 season”, seconded K. Lambley. CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY F. Drayton, Executive Report, NSNA General Meeting 30 January 1989

REPRESENTATIVE NETBALL When people ask, “when does the season end?” the reason you can’t give a straight answer is because representative netball seems to go on forever. Currently in November we have selections for 2019 and NID and in December we will start Metro selections. 15s MVP - Bianca Jom 15s MIP - Lily Eales The 15's had a great season finishing 8th place at the SA championships, which was disappointing by their high standards, they carried several injuries throughout the tournament and finished the tournament strongly. The team of 11 girls learnt to play in different positions throughout the season and some of the talented girls represented in various NSW school teams and NSW Netball Academy throughout the season. A great Season for the Under 15's with a lot of improvement from start to finish. These girls have strong futures with 2 being offered full playing contracts in Premier League next year and 2 being offered Training Partner contracts in Premier League next year.

LtoR Back: Grace Gillies, Steph Vitlitch, Lucy Matthews, Lily Eales, Claudia Perry, Tracey Chahwan (Coach) Front: Sophie Fox, Sophie Satalic, Bianca Jom, Jacquie Dwyer, Amy Elliot Absent: Tara Pierce (Assistant Coach), Maddie Marsh Manager

MVP - Bianca Tzoumis MIP - Emily Stewart Coach – Maddy Marsh This combination team made up of both Under 14 and 15's players was a very happy team and all of them developed well over the season. They played in the Under 15's Age Group at each carnival, so it was a challenge for the girls but they rose to the occasion and improved after each carnival.

MVP - Whitney Mueller MIP - Kaitlyn Mulcahy The Under 14s came into this season as the State Age Under 13 Champions which is a challenge to live up to such high expectations. These players battled their way to 4th at State Age and that was amazing considering the many injuries they were carrying, and players ruled out due to major injury that happened a few weeks from State Age. Amazing achievement for the Under LtoR Back: Donna Johanson (Coach), Eleanor Vozzo,

This very Happy Team loved their Rep Netball and we loved watching them grow throughout the season. Coach: Megan Anderson Asst. Coach: Glenys Paranihi Manager: Marie Cherote This year Netball NSW celebrated 50 years of State competitions (even though it was only really its 49th). Unfortunately, NSNA were not able to field an Opens with many of our Seniors with other commitments. Our 17s team had a great weekend in the Gosford rain and managed to come 3rd equal with Illawarra. These players were selected from our Metro 3 and 4 teams. The players came together as a team with a very short amount of practice time and were lucky enough to have the services of Megan Anderson for this tournament.

State Cup is invited teams from Metro Division 1 play against the Regional Division winners. This year the winners were Newcastle. This team was very lucky to have the services of ex-Silver Fern and current NNSW Men’s Coach (National Title winners for 2018) Teresa Tairi. This tournament also marked the end of an 11year Metro 1 career for Kate Dalwood who has returned to Adelaide to live. Kate’s amazing wing span has fooled many a shooter and her defence and leadership in this team will be greatly missed.

2018 was a successful season for ML1 on several levels. We trialled a fitness program for ML for the first time, running fitness for the first hour, followed by an hour and a half of training. The program showed its benefit during matches on numerous occasions, where close matches became solid wins for us off the back of powerful last quarters. The team was relatively new in 2019, with only 4 remaining from the previous year. The players showed great aptitude for fitness and skill improvement throughout the year and really pushed each other to become better. Making the Grand Final was a reward for all their hard work, but we went down by 1 goal to Randwick. It is a relatively young team, still with a lot of room for improvement and we would hope to see a lot of them back in 2019 - unless they gain Premier League contracts!

Team 2 had a mixed year with a lot of injuries and withdrawals. before the competition began, they lost 3 circle defenders, one through injury and two via withdrawals. Once we had recruited new members the team came together well and trained hard in both preseason fitness and in season court sessions. Unfortunately, the bad luck continued throughout the season for Team 2 with several injuries and people away at crucial times. This affected the continuity from week to week and the on-court cohesion resulting in some close losses. At the completion of the rounds we sat in 7th position, just 2 points from 5th. The season could have looked quite different for Team 2 had a few more things gone their way.

Metro 3 was a young new team with many playing metro league for the first time. The season started slow but once this team found its stride it moved up the ladder quickly. The division was very tight at the top and in the end, we missed the finals due to goal average. The team enjoyed fitness and training each week with a smile and a laugh but once on court each player worked at 100% for the team and the game. With a young team there is only more great things to come for these players as

Metro 4 is a relatively young team with lots of fun and energy. Unfortunately, we again ran out of games and were not able to find some consistency finishing middle of the table. We do suffer availability during school holidays and exam periods, but we manage the best we can. Our strength would be our ability to come back at a team and not let goal difference phase us. Our fitness helped us in this regard. Defensively through the court we improved and just needed a bit more consistency of personnel to make a run at top 4.

ANNUAL BOARD REPORT AGM Board Report November 2018 The following overview provides an update as to the key activity that has been conducted by NSU in 2018. NSU participated in our third season of the NNSW Samsung Premier League. The season began with a pre-season competition designed to prepare the teams for the full competition ahead. The season that followed saw all 8 franchises play each other twice culminating in the final’s series. Both teams improved significantly throughout the season, displaying a solid work ethic and a commitment to improve. The U20 were minor premiers at the end of the round robin and then managed to win the Premiership for 2018.The Opens were just pipped at the post in a very close finish for 5th. Players progressed strongly towards the end with some good wins under their belt A new Strength and Conditioning Coach, Scott Ryan-Shape Shifters, was employed in 2018 season with much better attendance than in 2017. 2018 season had a very solid U20 base who consistently performed well. Strategically, NSU has generated a lot of interest and goodwill. We have early success and with the new formula of U23 being introduced our focus on coaching and player pathways is paramount. It has represented both member Associations in the very best light. Our 2018 review by NNSW was again extremely positive and they are very happy with our franchise model both financially and management wise for the first the third year of our participation. Following the initial 2-year PL agreement, NSU signed up to a five-year contract from 2018 with commitment in place from both Associations, KNA and NSNA, have strongly committed to NSU until the end of 2023 at minimum. Our coaching staff had only one change this year - with Sonia Mkloma and Colleen Mitchell at the helm of our Opens. They had a mixed season and were disappointed not to be in the final series, but players have developed well during the year. Nardia Macdonald and Helen Olivier were coaches of our U20's team and had great success winning the competition. Both Managers roles were filled by Board members as there were no nominees and we hope to fill those roles again in 2019. NSU’s skill development clinics at KNA and NSNA for juniors 10-13 were again well received throughout the year which again supported our program and has been our main revenue raiser for 2018. In 2019our calendar will need closer review as there are many outside sources presenting netball clinics in this region. We do however anticipate more specialist sessions to take place next year.

The contribution of the following personnel is acknowledged: Board members: Nick Hermann, Jo Anne Perry, Glenys Paranihi, Jenny Gage, Adam Oakes who unfortunately could not continue in his role due to personal reasons. We anticipate this role will be filled in 2019. Jenny Gage will be stepping down after 4 years on the board and we wish her well and thank her for her hard work and generous contribution to the franchise over this period Delegates NSNA Catriona Glover and Ineke Walker KNA Lisa Duncan and Kathy Staggs. Coaching Staff With the season closing, we say farewell to Sonia, Nardia and Helen and thank all these ladies for bringing their skills and professionalism to our teams and look forward to seeing Sonia more during the Swifts games and thank Nardia for her contribution for over last three years and wish all these ladies well in their future endeavours. The Board recognises the valued contribution of all our coaches and with the introduction of the U23 we felt it very vital that our coaching pathways should be recognised to enable growth and development of our players to the Senior Ranks and ensure our future development of our younger players in their transition from State Age to Metro and then Premier League. Head Coach Opens 2019 Bec Bulley Assistant: Lisa Duncan Head Coach U23's 2019 Colleen Mitchell Assistant: Kylie Cane The Board recognise the hard-working contribution and dedication of our Physio Adrian Tocchet and thank him for his vital input into NSU. This saw all players receive specialist performance testing, additional S&C sessions, Pilates sessions, nutrition sessions among other training, preparatory and team building activities. Selections for 2019 are currently taking place with strong interest and attendance with the panel appointed. The selection policy was also updated by the board. Panel is as follows: Opens: Bec Bulley, Colleen Mitchell, Lisa Duncan KNA, Suzanne Sayle NSNA, Kylie Cane, U23s: Bec Bulley, Colleen Mitchell, Lisa Duncan KNA, Suzanne Sayle NSNA, Kylie Cane

Minor Premiers North Shore United went up against their biggest rivals of the competition, GWS Fury, in the Netball NSW 2018 Premier League Grand Final at Genea Netball Centre on Tuesday 25 September, and it certainly was a thrilling game with NSU coming out on top 56-44. In the opening minutes NSU worked to choke the Fury midcourt, making them work hard to get the ball into the goal circle. Every ball was a physical contest right from the beginning with NSU up by one at quarter time, 13-12. Some missed opportunities by Fury in the second quarter widened the gap to three, with their opponents in the lead. By half-time NSU kept their one-goal margin, but not without Fury fighting hard to get the ball back with some impressive long-range shooting from Emily Dunn. In the second half, Fury struggled to finish off their plays with many turnovers giving NSU the opportunity to gain a bigger lead. By three-quarter time the score had stretched to 40-34 thanks to NSU’s quick hands and almost flawless shooting. NSU capitalised on every weak pass between the Fury players, converting them into goals and putting them further ahead on the scoreboard. Despite the big gap Fury fought to the death, but Minor Premiers NSU were too strong and finished the game with a thrilling 12-goal victory, 56-44.
