CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF ASSOCIATION For the past four years it has been my honour to serve as President of Northern Suburbs Netball Association. As I step away from this position I would acknowledge all those people that make this Association work. First and foremost the Executive who we are all indebted to. It is these women who give up their spare time to give to others. Our structure is such that this is a “working” Executive. Meaning everyone on Executive carries out 80% of what is needed to make the largest Association in Australia function. This is not an ideal solution and our Constitution Committee is looking into ways to “spread the load” with the view to a restructure in 2020/21. NSNA Executive 2019 - Ineke Walker - Vice President, Lynne Robertson - Treasurer, Donna Baker – Secretary, Toni Palmer – Competition Convenor, Eileen Hukins – Umpire Convenor, Melissa Fisher – NetSetGo Convenor, Jenny Gage – Coaching Convenor and our Business Administrator – Marie Cherote. Thank you to all those who volunteered on the Grading, Fixtures, Umpires, Grounds, Canteen, NetSetGo and Carnival Committees for your time and energy contributing to the success of our Association. We have had a very busy year from start to finish – kicking off with a birthday party to celebrate 50 years as an Association. We acknowledge all our life members and foundation clubs on whose shoulders we stand and we look forward to another birthday in 50 years time. Thanks to all those who attended the party at Norths Cammeray, to our wonderful organising committee lead by Toni Field, and committee members Ineke Walker, Fay Drayton,OAM and Leona Sierakowski. Also thanks to Jason Hodges who was our MC for the night. On a personal note thank you to Toni Field for her mentorship over the past 4 years - you have been a great sounding board. The future of the Association is positive. Facilities are a problem and we cannot control these but we continue to advocate councils and state ministeres for better facility equity among sports. PAGE | 03

1. The Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link Following extensive assessment of all the options and consideration of community feedback and other impacts, RMS have selected the area on the eastern side of Flat Rock Drive (Option B) as the preferred location for the temporary tunnel site, to remove spoil from the tunnel and provide access for plant, equipment and workers. Feedback to RMS and our Premier told the powers that be that we value open space and sporting precincts. Using this site will mean a greater distance between the site and the sporting facilities and RMS believe tunneling won’t impact Willoughby Leisure Centre indoor facilities, netball courts or car park. It will also avoid the need to acquire residential property or impact the baseball diamond, and provides trucks with direct access to and from the site via a main road. The site will be set up as a construction site and the majority of the tunnelling work will take place up to 20 storeys underground, with the access ramp designed to minimise disturbance of former landfill.

2. NetSetGo moving to Sunday Mornings We have delayed this happening for as long as we could but as there are no suitable facilities for us to play NetSetGo (NSG) and we cannot schedule any further games on either Friday night or Saturday the only alternative for 2020 and the foreseeable future is to move the NetSetGo Programme to Sunday mornings. We understand that this move will definitely have an impact on numbers and in conversation with members who are involved in other sports we will probably see a decline in the number of 7-9 year olds playing netball next year. At present we have around 900 NSG players and we hope that the Sunday move is seen as a positive rather than a negative. We believe that the facilities at Willoughby are much better than currently experienced at Club Willoughby where NSG has been played. Currently scheduling is for a 9:00am start time and a 12:00pm finish time.

|EXECUTIVE SUMMARY- LOOKING FORWARD

3. Gore Hill Indoor Multi-Sport Project It is the opinion of the NSNA Executive that indoor court facilities are a high priority need in terms of sporting facilities in the North Shore. Willoughby Council have announced that work on Phase II of the Gore Hill Project, which would see up to 6 indoor courts built in a multi-sport facility, will begin in 2020 with completion in 2023. We hope this is the case and we will be keeping Willoughby Council “honest” to make good on this project. 4. Duke for Sport Partner In 2019 we signed up to be part of the Duke of Edinburgh programme called Duke 4Sport. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award contributes to the personal development of young Australians through each of the Award Sections, with the Physical Recreation component encouraging Participants to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. The Duke 4Sport partnership creates a link between the Physical Recreation Section of the Award, the Voluntary Service Section of the Award and sporting activities already undertaken by the Award Participant. By becoming a Duke 4Sport partner, NSNA will not only have the opportunity to assist and deliver a globally recognised Award, but will also enhance their ability to attract and retain players, as well as securing regular and ongoing volunteers that will be hugely beneficial to the Association and Clubs.

Grace Fielding (Roseville) being presented to HRH Prince Edward at a function at the SCG - Grace is currently doing her Bronze DoE and has been a NSNA Representative for 3 years

5. UTS Intern Programme 2019 also saw NSNA sign up to the UTS Intern Programme. Some of the degrees offered by UTS have an internship component and this year Harrison Bennet came to NSNA and did administration and anything else that we could think of on Friday nights and Saturdays. This partnership was so successful we are hoping to sign up to participate in 2020. We hope that these two programs will help address the volunteer shortage our clubs and the Association experience. NORTHERN SUBURBS NETBALL |HONARARY LIFE MEMBERS 2019

Outstanding Service In celebration of our 50th Year as an Association the NSNA Executive recognise the following people as Honarary Life Members. Their amazing support of the Association from its inception to present has contributed to its history and success. Monty Hodges and Frank Burge Monty was married to Della and Frank was married to Joan both women very heavily involved in NSNA and so by association Monty and Frank came too - whether they wanted to or not. When the Association was run out of tents for many years both at Bales Park and Bicentennial these men did the putting up and down of the tents. They were the original BBQ men and they also found time in between following orders to support their daughters on the sideline.

Acknowledgement of their service to the Association is also acknowledgement to all those “unsung” men who support their daughters, wives, partners and friends in their pursuit of netball glory. Margaret Snodgrass, OAM When we see Margaret around the courts we think everything is going to be ok. Margaret has been a great supporter and Patron of the Association for over 20 years and when everything around you is frantic a conversation with Margaret is the thing that will bring you back to centre and in perspective. Margaret has been an unfailing supporter of the association and we thank her greatly for her time and support. Grant Anstiss Grant has been around forever. He has directed traffic at netball for as long as anyone cares to remember. He always has something in the truck that will fix the problem and he goes over and above his position at Council to deliver service to the Association. We have enjoyed having Grant as part of the family and we hope that 2019 will not be the last we see of him.

|REGISTRATIONS

For the most part our registrations remain stable. Junior 3494 | Junior Twilight 107 | Senior 951 | Sen. Twilight 218 | Indoor 451 | NSG 891 | NonPlayer 145 | TOTAL 6,257 Note that some juniors and seniors play more than one competition within NSNA (we have a few members that play 4) and are only included in the above numbers for the competition in which they hold a Primary registration. The charts below illustrate these numbers in 2 ways: show that for most of our members NSNA is their "primary" association Junior registrations make up 56% of total registrations (11-17) Our Twilight competition signed up >300 people who did not play in any other competition at NSNA Note that NNSW numbers only include those registrations that are primary to our Association where we have included primary as well as secondary where registration with NSNA is not primary. If there is a concern in registrations it would probably be in 10 year old registrations which seem to drop from NSG to 10s – we think this is probably most attributable to 10s moving from Saturday competition to Friday night competition which from inception (2010 season) has never been popular. Numbers seem to come back by the 13s which is largely due to players changing to the high school clubs we have in the Association. In 2019 considerable problems were experienced with registrations through the myNetball system. Netball NSW have advised that these problems were mostly due to Interact Sport (the company that runs myNetball) introducing mySoccer to the system and the overlap of registrations from people who participate in both sports. Problems were also experienced by clubs who chose (or were advised by NNSW to choose) the MPS Distribution which distributes all monies to all parties (NNSW, NSNA and Club) but is harder to reconcile for both NSNA and NNSW – in 2020 we hope that this option has been taken away so that it cannot be a choice for our clubs. Netball NSW advise that they are going out to tender for a new registration and competition system next year to be introduced for the 2021 season - we will keep you updated. NSNA remain the largest Association in NSW and we continue to look for ways to increase our numbers but understand that they will always be affected by our lack of courts. In 2020 we believe that potential membership avenues could be targeting male membership as well as other forms of the game i.e. Fast 5 and Walking Netball. In 2019 our 11s grade trialled the LiveScoring App offered by WSA. From an Association point of view the trial was very successful, unfortunately at $5 per player for access to the app NSNA believe the cost to be too expensive for what we got. NSNA will continue to pursue avenues to automate our registration and scoring in 2020 as we believe having access to the system through an app on your phone certainly is the future of administration and scoring.

Considerations for 2020 For 2020 competition a slight change to Regrading Policy will be moved for consideration at the AGM in February: Teams being regraded take the points and SMA (score match average) of the team coming 5th before the regrade. It is hoped that this will mean less disruption to the grades. Also proposing an increase in forfeit penalties which will be advised in 2020. A review of donation vs trophies for seniors and Cadets should also be reviewed at Council for 2020.

|NET SET GO REPORT

Net Set Go Registrations - 835 | Teams – 84 | Clubs - 15 Grassroots netball is hugely important to NSNA and each year it is more difficult to find open sporting space for our young players. Having 6 courts at one venue, plus parking, storage, amenities etc, was a rare find of sporting space for our girls. We are incredibly grateful for the negotiations behind the scenes to get us these courts. The season at Club Willoughby was smooth and successful, and each week there was evidence of amazing skill development and an increasing love of netball, both on and off the court. The season could not have run without our wonderful NSG umpires, managers and coaches. We thank all our Club volunteers for their commitment to the teams and the success of the NSG season. A HUGE thanks to the NSG Committee and NSG Club Contacts for their dedication to grassroots netball, their time and energy throughout the season. Despite the disappointment that NSG Gala Day was washed out, due to much needed but ill-timed rain, it was so helpful and lovely to see so many teams drop down to Willoughby Leisure Centre to collect their NSG trophies. 2020 NSG on Sundays at Willoughby Leisure Centre will be an exciting change for us all. Unfortunately, this change will not suit all Clubs or all members, however the overwhelming benefits that come with this change are: is the use of existing netball facilities and infrastructure, opportunities to enhance our NSG coaching, umpiring, and incorporating some new grading initiatives.

Tuesday Morning

2019 was another great year for the ‘competitively friendly’ Tuesday Lunchtime Ladies Indoor Comp. The Lunchtime Ladies comp continues to be popular due to its flexible and fun atmosphere. This comp is run to provide maximum enjoyment and exercise, without too much intensity. Games are played during the four school terms in a round robin format. There are currently 6 teams and we’ve seen lots of new faces this year; new mums returning to netball, retired weekend players recommencing the sport they love, and many players and umpires who have been participating in this comp for nearly 20 years. We’re always looking for new players, new teams and extra umpires, so for more information please get in touch via the NSNA website. In 2020 the viability of this competition will have to be assessed if numbers don’t support it continuing.

Another good year for Northern Suburbs umpires with the following highlights: There were 14 members of the Umpires’ Committee including myself (Umpire Convenor), Janet Torney (Senior Umpire Coordinator). Everyone on the Committee assisted with the substantial demand for levelling and badging and I am grateful to all of you. A special thank you to Janet for taking on the role of Senior Coordinator and for the energy and skills which she brings to the role. 2019 Umpire Committee

Thank you to those umpires who represented the Association – our Metro League, Night Inter-District and Fast Five umpires have been great. Thank you again to those umpires who have made the commitment again this year. We are very grateful. Thank you to those umpires who represented the Association at representative carnivals, particularly those who attended as Lead Umpires and took on this additional responsibility. A huge thank you to Sharon Kelly for your skills, communication and advice which has been invaluable. Thank you too for the work on the A/A2 Development Program. Congratulations to those umpires who attained a National C Badge this year – there were 41 new National C Badges and two new National B Badges in Ailish Doherty and Kath Vo. We wish you well in your continuing umpire development pathways.

Finally, a huge thank you to Sharon and Janet for taking the reins in my absence Of concern are those clubs who still do very little on umpire development. Some have in the past but did nothing this year. SELECTIONS Thank you to Craig Marsh for setting up the 2019 Selection Process. It was a pleasure to take over from such an organised and prepared convenor. I wish Craig all the best in his new adventures. The 11s Development squad held a 4 week training program for all under 10s players interested in development or the representative program in 2019. Thank you to the coaches who coached these sessions, the players enjoyed the sessions and learnt a lot. The 11s Development Selection was held in a single, very long session, resulting in 24 players being named. Thank you to Jenny Gage who will be the head coach for 2019 for all her work. 12 - 14 years named a Junior State Titles team of 10 & a Development team of 10/12 depending of the number of players who nominated. This will be reviewed for 2019 to ensure all development squads have 12 players to ensure we are offering as much development as possible. 15 year Senior State Titles team selected 10 players and 3 training partners for 2019. Due to numbers we have no development team in this age group. 17s Senior State Titles team was formed with 12 of our players from Metro and Premier League. We where unable to form an Opens team in 2019 and hope to make changes to the program to accommodate this in 2020. Metro League Selections were conducted early December 2018. This made it difficult to form teams and confirm players before Christmas. Consideration to timing of this selection will be made in 2019 with consideration of Academy, Premier League and NSW selections held in October/November each year. We have formed 4 Metro League teams of 12. They will play in division 1, 2 , 4 & 6. Thank you to the selectors for all the time they have given to the players, I really appreciate your time and effort in ensuring the best team combinations are selected.

REPRESENTATIVES REPORT Another fantastic year for both our Senior and Junior Representative Programme. We work hard at achieving a development pathway for all our players and this plus the close comeraderie amongst players and parents makes our program strong. NSNA have a great participation program and we are very proud to have amazing pathways in place for our players from the Junior Program to North Shore United Premier League. The following reports are from the head coaches of each team (where submitted) for your review.

Metro 1 COACH: KAREN STONNIL |MANAGER: MARIE CHEROTE DIVISION 1 | FINISHING POSITION - 1 With a new head coach, Karen Stonnil and blooding some of our young talent Lucy Matthews (Northbridge) and Claudia Lenehan (Loreto) making the transition from junior representatives to Metro a fantastic mix of old and new worked hard and found some rhythm to be crowned champions in Dooleys Metro 1. In the final NSNA faced the old foe Manly Warringah. Northern Suburbs flew out of the gates in the opening term, outscoring Manly by 7 goals. Manly also outscored NSNA in the final two quarters but the damage was already done, and NSNA claimed the win by four goals, 52-48. There was a great turnout and the team thank all those Norths players, parents and supporters who came out to help them get across the line.

Unfortrunately the team was affected by injury and probably did not perform to their full capacity. They are a young team and the coach believes that this is definitly a team of the future.

Metro 3

COACH: APRIL BUTLER DIVISION 4 | FINISHING POSITION - 6TH This team was badly affected by injury, study and Premier League recruitment but managed to keep it together to finish a very credible 6th. They played most of the season with only 8 players available and were never really able to settle into a consistent pattern due to the availability of players. When they were able to put a consistent team together showed that they had alot of potential and we hope they carry on in 2020.

Metro 3: Standing LtoR April Butler (coach), Sam Conway, Jaime Podmore Taylor, Lara Sciberras, Grace Gillies, |Front LtoR Claudia Sayle, Zoe Janssen, Rose Jenkins, Julia Parisi, Tess Rigor |Absent Jessica Lasky, Emily Muirhead, Lottie Wiegold

Metro 4

COACH: GLENYS PARANIHI | MANAGER: MARIE CHEROTE DIVISION 6 | FINISHING POSITION - 3RD This team had a really fun year. They had some up and down moments but for the most part tried really hard and put in some great matches. Particular strengths - being able to chase down a lead but equally a weakness would be their very good start and then pretty slow 2nd and 3rd quarter. NSNA remain committed to four teams in Metro and the only Association that has consistently done so for the past four years - we believe that Metro is the natural pathway for junior representative players.

|NORTH SHORE UNITED

PAGE | 17 North Shore United (NSU) participated in our fourth season of the NNSW Samsung Premier League. The season began with a pre-season competition designed to prepare the teams for the full competition ahead. The season that followed saw all 8 franchises play each other twice culminating in the finals series. Both teams improved significantly throughout the season, displaying a solid work ethic and a commitment to improve. The U23 were the youngest in the competition and started the season with difficulty as a team. From Week one to week 14 the team improved significantly. They developed well as a team and coaches Colleen Mitchell and Tania Doherty made significant inroads into their progress and personal improvement of the team from Day 1. They had significant wins towards the end of the season and took on the stronger teams to within a draw, a win or a minor goal loss. We are particularly impressed with their development. They placed a close 6th in the competition. The Opens played a solid season. They played without key players for the majority of the season, and our players developed strongly as the season progressed. They were placed equal third and on goal countback game in a minor .01% behind third and fourth positions. Although disappointed for the team, we believe this team was definitely a strong threat to the Opens divison in 2019 and we commend both Bec Bulley and Lisa Duncan on a job well done. Both teams utilised training partners, were very conscious of Association needs for their metro players, and believe the majority of players will return from both teams in 2020. We commend all Coaching staff for their strong work ethic and comraderie developed between both teams in the true spirit of what we wish to attain at NSU and our associations.
