I’ve

PAUL WOLF

often been accused of seeing everything in black and white. I’m not sure I completely agree with that, but looking at my closet it’s obvious fashion-wise I do. I made a conscientious effort last summer to add color to my wardrobe. I soon discovered the new colors I had added were brown and gray. Not much of a reach. I did include some orange (my favorite color) to the closet. My black and white wardrobe has been through numerous color trends. Now, though, I can officially state that I’m wearing the colors of the season .... black and white. It seems to be everywhere in the fashion world. The realization I was “fashionable,” and I use that word loosely, was discovered when we started working on ‘The Look’ 2015 spring/summer issue. We used the same format as our award-winning fall/winter edition. Again the backdrop was Fischer Gallery and the Dickie’s Building. Marci Fischer, gallery owner, is tremendously accommodating, understanding, hospitable, considerate, cooperative, sweet; a few adjectives we can use to describe her. The lighting, beautiful art, and textured location scenery all provided the ideal palette for photographer Lonnie Kees to showcase clothes, jewelry and accessories from our local merchants. Lonnie always delivers creative, innovative and beautiful photos, but I’m still amazed when I see them. Modeling again this season was Mary Upton Shirley. She was joined by local developer Ted Duckworth. Both had a natural working relationship with the camera and Lonnie. The three were able to do justice to the fashions. Getting the makeup and hair to complement everything was the talented Tracy Branch. The hairstylist and makeup artist is associated with Static Salon in Madison. Last fall was the first season we had worked with Tracy. Hopefully we’ll be together for a long time. After the editorial section was completed, photographers Chris Grillis, David Johnston and Christina Cannon Boteler creatively shot the images for the ads. They appear to be able to effortlessly capture the perfect shot. I have said many times the Sun is fortunate to be associated with these talented artists. Easily all four are the best photographers in the state and the South. And speaking of best - the stores. A friend asked me why would we undertake publishing a fashion edition. She pointed out there were numerous national publications that were more connected with the industry. I shared that maybe this was true concerning the Sun, but obviously not for the area businesses. Judging from the inventory, not only are they up to date on the latest trends, but they recognize what works best for their clients and the market. The Look presents this to the readers. Designer Miuccia Prada is quoted as saying, “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today when human contacts go so fast. Fashion is instant language.” The advertisers in this local fashion magazine know this and provide our area the opportunity to speak this language. Enjoy! Jimmye Sweat

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.”

“The great thing about fashion is that it always looks forward.”

“Spring 2015 has a very ’70s influence. Very Bohemian. Lots of fringe, soft, flowy fabrics with lots of prints and touches of gingham. You will see wide-leg pants, long and cropped, even going into fall 2015. Crop tops are a big item, shown over high waist, pleated skirts. Pink is definitely the dominating color of the season. There is a lot of suede and fringe being used in accessories. Bright pops of colored stones. Wide cuffs. Have fun using the temporary tattoos in gold and silver. A little something extra for the summer beach trip.” Shari Reinhardt Maison Weiss

“Bringing sexy back. For 2015 swim trends expect to see detailing on the back of bikini tops including crochet, straps and more. You will also see a surge of cropped bikini tops and bralettes, which are super trendy and also very functional. Returning for 2015 you will continue to see reversible prints and flutter tops. Mix and match is still happening. Detailing is not just limited to the top. You will see strappy bottoms that allow a little more coverage than your old-school string bikini, but still help you to achieve the look you are after.” Delia Childers Sportique

“Spring trends for men this season will be bright colors, short sleeve button-downs and t-shirts. You will also see tons of tank tops paired with your favorite swim trunk.”

“Trends that we are seeing for spring and summer are cold shoulders, destroyed denim, clean whites and bijoux jewelry and sunglasses trends from the 1980s and ’90s.”

“This spring it’s all about the modern Bohemian with fringe, florals, and the always essential denim.”

“Brightly colored tank tops are a must have this year. Sandals are more popular than ever. Tri-blend, softer t-shirts are on the rise.”

“When it comes to accessories this spring, more is better and even more is best. Layered jewelry, bold print scarves and a handbag for each outfit top the list.”

“Fashion for spring is all about arts and architecture, from watercolor florals to sleek lines and angles. The good news is ... it is vibrant and playful for spring because there is something for everyone.”
