FROM THE EDITOR SPRING 2016

As I’ve said before, I recognize these clothes. I’ve seen them before. I’ve worn them before and now I have the opportunity to wear them again. Things that were popular and stylish in the ’70s and ’80s are back in vogue. Deja vu. Now the clothes have a more updated look. When I watched the models being photographed, I associated the clothes with good times, fun times. I know they will make me feel good when I wear them. Although, unfortunately I will never look quite like our models, Ann Leighton Malouf and Hayden Anderson, in them. It’s always fun to see the advertising reps bring the clothes and accessories for the shoot. We enviously go through all preparing and coordinating them for the photographers. At the end of the long day they are all packed up and returned to the merchants, although I have been known to set a few aside for purchase. To celebrate spring 2016, Mike Peters and Arden Barnett offered Duling Hall for our location. In 2014 Arden started leasing Duling. Arden is responsible for all the great entertainment offered. His company, Ardenland, books entertainment and concerts not only at Duling, but Thalia Mara Hall, Iron Horse Grill, the coliseum, Hal and Mal’s, and other venues. This month some acts he will be bringing to Jackson include Widespread Panic, The Taj Maha Trio, Brian Wilson and Drive By Truckers. That’s just April. The lineup for May and the coming months is just as strong. All day we were using both inside and outside of the former elementary school for our backdrop. All the businesses welcomed us. A special thank you to Stephanie Fowler at Saltines who let us fill the restaurant with models, photographers, equipment and assistants during lunchtime. Our female models this season were Ann Leighton Malouf, a student at Jackson Prep, and Hayden Anderson, a Canton Academy senior. The two were amazing as you will see throughout “The Look.” GT Thetford again modeled for the men’s shops. GT, a Realtor, is a natural and was very tolerant of everyone telling him what to do. Tracy Branch, the makeup artist, magically transformed the models’ hair and makeup to complement each shot. Lonnie Kees and Chris Grillis were the photographers for the pictures taken at Duling. When the Sun first started publishing a fashion edition, Chris and Lonnie were the orignal photographers. The following year David Johnston joined the team. The newcomer is Christina Cannon. She came on board about 10 years ago. All of the photographers helped with the photos in the ads. I’m going to recycle what I write in each issue because it’s true. Northsiders are so fortunate that travel is not necessary to find wonderful clothes and jewelry. We have it all here, from women’s and men’s clothing to accessories and children’s clothing. In addition to the merchandise offered, service is a benchmark of the merchants. They have relationships with their customers. Many have been working with the same families for generations. We are proud of The Look. We think it’s the perfect venue for localizing the latest trends in fashion by showcasing area shops. Jimmye Sweat

In the fall of 1927 Duling Elementary School opened at 622 Duling Ave. The first year around 36 students were enrolled in grades one through six. Through the years the school’s growing enrollment equaled building additions and renovations. The area in the ’50s and ’60s was growing with young families moving to the North Jackson area. The school eventually was changed to Duling Alterntaive School and in 2005 Jackson Public Schools (JPS) shuttered it. However, through the vision of Mike Peters, the building took on a new life. Mike and his partner Andrew Mattiace developed the facility into shops and restaurants. Today it’s home to restaurants, a beauty salon, a decorator’s showroom, concerts, wedding receptions and much more. Colors this season transcend cultural and gender norms. Vivid brights give way to excitement and optimism, though quiet stability prevails in this season’s palette. The colors transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves. Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute™

The top ten colors for men's and women's fashion for Spring 2016 are: Rose Quartz, Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, Buttercup, Limpet Shell, Lilac Gray, Fiesta, Iced Coffee and Green Flash. 8

One of the main trends for spring, especially for our climate, is fabrication. As the calendar trends from February to July and temps rise, men should be able to wear great fashion pieces no matter the temperature. Cotton will always be the staple of the South, but many companies are blending cotton with linen, silk, rayon and nylon to provide the garment a lighter feel and weight. These blends not only provide a better weight to the garment in the spring, but many times the blending of rayon and nylon into wool pants or cotton shirts will give the garment a better “performance” or allow the garment to withstand excess creasing or wrinkling.

1

Silhouettes in tailored clothing continue to emphasize a softer, more natural shoulder in sport jackets, no matter if it’s the universal navy blazer or cotton coat to pair back with jeans. These coats usually are unlined, which is more difficult for the manufacturer to produce, but also a benefit to the Southern gentleman as it should be lighter on the body. Luke Abney

LEE MICHAELS “Yellow gold is very hot this year. Designers such as David Yurman, Roberto Coin, Ippolita and John Hardy continue to push the envelope with their designs in gold.” “We are noticing that women continue to embrace diamond hoops. KINKADE’S This season is all about the relaxed effortless charm. The pantone colors this year are light pink (Rose Quartz)13-1520 and light blue (Serenity 15-3919). Ties are at about three inches wide, which is about the size of the lapel of a jacket at it widest point. New pocket squares in a circle are called pocket circles. Some are double sized and can be worn either folded or not. Linen and seersucker are both organic fabrics that are always loved by the Southern states, especially in a soft shoulder jacket with a butterfly lining, and are great for the office, dinner by the pool with cocktails or an ice cold beer.
