THE MIGHTY FANS!

They fill the hill, wear the bear and cheer on our local footy team through rain or shine. As The North Sydney Bears go from strength to strength, northsider meets some of their biggest supporters. >>

The Bears are part of us

SHIRLEY TYNDALL, CATHY CAMPBELL AND LAUREN FLETCHER ARE THREE GENERATIONS OF BEARS FANS. SHIRLEY, 93, HAS BEEN A SUPPORTER OF THE TEAM FOR 73 YEARS AND COUNTING

“My first trip to North Sydney Oval was in 1951 when I was 20 years old,” Shirley tells northsider. “I was with my friend Marge and we went to watch two young fellas she knew try out for the team.”

While their friends didn’t make the grade, Shirley left The Oval hooked on The Bears. Her support of the team became a family affair, with her daughters, and even her Eastern Suburbs supporting hubby, embracing her passion.

“I was breast feeding once and it was a running joke that I was getting the baby

Bears forever!

Clockwise from above: Shirley, Cathy, Lauren and Chloe at the 2023 Grand Final; at beautiful North Sydney Oval; Shirl with fave player Greg ‘Flo’ Florimo; wearing the bear!; Shirley with baby Chloe; Shirley, Flo and daughter, Linda, also a Bears fan; four generations at the footy.

on the bottle so I could go to the games,” Shirley, who’s known as Shirl, laughs.

As the children grew up, they’d accompany their mum and dad to matches, travelling from Newtown to see their team play.

“I worked at a paper company and I’d bring home red and black paper to cut up and take to The Oval,” Shirl remembers. “When The Bears scored, we’d throw it in the air.”

“We’d look forward to every weekend we crossed the bridge,” Shirl’s daughter, Cathy, says. “We’d go together as a family and when, and if, the team won we’d have red and black streamers that we held out of the car windows on the way home. We’d always tell the toll keeper on the bridge that The Bears won too! It was all part of the fun.”

When Cathy had three daughters of her own, the footy loving family continued to grow.

TRADITION”

“WE ALL GREW UP WITH THE BEARS. IT’S OUR FAMILY

“When I was at high school, I remember behind staying after the games in the 90s with my autograph book,” Cathy’s daughter, Lauren, says. “The players, like Jason Taylor,

were so approachable and friendly. The Bears were just the team you went for.”

When their beloved team exited the national rugby league competition in 1999, the family threw their support behind them, heading to the Central Coast for the Save The Bears march in 2010. Shirl walked alongside legendary player, now team Wellbeing, Education and Community Manager, Greg Florimo.

They are adamant that the team, which was established in 1908 and was one of the country’s first rugby league football clubs, should be back in the National competition.

“We’re a foundation team, we deserve to be there,” Lauren says.

From cushions, to jackets, hats and bumper stickers, Shirley and the family are proud to wear the bear and show their support. “We always know what gifts to buy Mum,” Cathy smiles.

And while there’s no hesitation when it comes to the best matches of all time - “Any

time we beat Manly!” all three laugh – 2023 was also a very special season for the family.

“We were so proud when they got to the Grand Finals,” Cathy continues. “It was the first Grand Final Mum had been to and we all went to the match.”

Lauren’s eldest daughter, Chloe, 21, went too and might just be showing signs of also being a red and black fan.

“Chloe loves the history of her great grandma being a Bears fan and she loves North Sydney Oval…so fingers crossed!” Lauren says. “We all grew up with The Bears. It’s our family tradition, it’s part of us.”

When you love The Bears, it’s for life

ROB KNIGHT SUPPORTS THE BEARS FROM INTERSTATE

“I’m from Sydney’s South and when I was five, my parents asked if I was going to support The Sharks or The Dragons. I said The Bears! I’ve been a fan for 36 years now. They’re more than a footy team. When you love The Bears it’s for life. I still remember Flo’s farewell game like it was yesterday…devastating for us on The Hill! I moved to the Adelaide Hills five years ago so unfortunately I can’t get to games anymore. However I’m part of ‘The Den’ supporters group on Facebook and that keeps me in touch with all the die hards. They’re a great community that shares my passion and hunger for re-admission. If The Bears come back I’ll be flying all over Australia for games!”

They’re more than just a footy team

MICHAEL THORPE HAS A COLLECTION OF TEAM MEMORABILIA DATING BACK TO THE ‘60S

“Each game is like a family event and every time you go to the ground, it brings back so many memories. I’ve been a Bears fan pretty much my whole life. My mum and my nana were Bears supporters so naturally I supported them too. They’d take me to games and I’d sit with them in the stands until I was 12 or so. Then I was allowed to go and sit on The Hill with the guys with the big flags! The Bears are more than just a football team for me - I grew up with them and the fans are a great community, everyone has their own connection and story. When I was young my family would buy me Bears stuff. I kept it all and recently pulled it out of storage. I’ve probably got around 300 or so items, from posters to shirts to stubby coolers and everything in-between dating back as far as the 1960s.

One of my favourite items is a supporters’ ball that player Billy Moore gave me on my 10th birthday that was signed by all the players. That was pretty special! I’ve got lots of great photos too, including one of me in full Bears kit when they won the Reserve Grade Grand Final in ‘89 and one from ‘92 when I got to hold the cup.

My partner is very understanding! We moved to a three bed place so she could have an office and I could have a room for The Bears! I’ve started an Instagram, @redandblack_bears, to showcase items from my collection and I’ve got followers from all over the world because everybody likes The Bears – if they’re not your team, then they’re definitely your second favourite.

It’s important for the team to come back to the NRL. We were one of the first footy clubs in the country and we shouldn’t have had to leave in the first place. Fingers crossed we make the Grand Final again this year and win it – I think we’re in with a good chance!”

TEAM SPIRIT

The Bears mean everything

ROSS PITMAN HAS BEEN A BEARS FAN SINCE HE WAS BORN

“My auntie gave me my first Bears jumper when I was born so I’ve been a Bears fan since day one! The fan community is the best. We’re a unique breed as we have endured so many hardships but it has galvanised our love of, and belief in, this truly great football club. We’re one big family. The 90s were a great time to follow The Bears. During football season we’d share stories and hopes and what ifs about the upcoming game. We travelled en mass to games and we’re all still good mates today.

I’d say my standout game was in 1997 when we smashed Manly 41-8. To be at The Oval with my mates on a wet overcast day watching the Mighty Bears flog them was the best day ever.

There was a real sense of sorrow and loss when The Bears were kicked out of the national competition. People lost their identity because they had lost their team. My good friend Darren Welsby (formally

Ross representing the red and blacks at The White House

“PEOPLE LOST THEIR IDENTITY BECAUSE THEY HAD LOST THEIR TEAM”

Barney the Bear) created a Facebook group called The Den for us supporters to connect, reflect and rejoice in our history. It’s now got close to 9000 members all rooting for The Bears to come back. It’s so, so important for that to happen. It’s been 25 years but we’re still living in hope. The fans need it and Rugby League and the NRL need it too.  The Bears mean everything. I can’t follow any other team and wouldn’t even entertain the idea. It’s The Bears or it’s no one!”

Hearing the fans’ support from the stands changes the way we play

KURT DE LUIS IS CAPTAIN OF THE NORTH SYDNEY BEARS

“The fans’ support means everything to the team. A game can easily be lost if the boys start to drop their heads but we’ll hear the fans in the stands and on The Hill and that lifts everyone’s chins and changes momentum. This season our change room walkway is lined with the cheering crowds of the red and black army, and it just means so much to pass those faces as we head out to play. We’re super grateful to have them cheering us on at games and seeing kids and families on the field after the game is the absolute best. People in North Sydney love their footy and it’s an honour to lead the boys out on to the field at every home game and soak up the energy of the fans around the ground.” l

North Sydney explore how retirement planning is evolving

Rethinking RETIREMENT

How’s your retirement looking?

It’s a question that’s more relevant than ever and one we should consider whether we’re 16, 26 or 60 plus.

When the pension was first introduced in the 1950s, the average life expectancy was 62 while the retirement age was set at 65. That’s right. The system was designed under the assumption that most people wouldn’t live long enough to collect their pension.

But as the years passed, quality of life and life expectancy changed quickly. By the time someone born in 1950 had reached the age of 62, their life expectancy had risen to 82! Our increased longevity means the old age pension, currently $52k pa, has to stretch further. Even with super and savings, many find it challenging to maintain a comfortable lifestyle in retirement.

Adding to our financial strain is the fact we’re now having children later in life. Over the past decade, the average age of new parents has risen significantly. The most expensive years of raising kids – covering costs like school fees, tutoring, sports, hobbies and those brand new runners everyone ‘must’ have… - are being pushed

back into what were traditionally prime retirement saving years. This time in our working lives for saving and investing is being compressed, unless we extend our employment years.

Savings and super are unlikely to be enough. We need to start planning our investments while the kids are young, push back retirement plans to give time for compound interest and capital growth to do their work, or do a combination of these things.

If you’re worried about providing for your family’s future and your retirement years, there’s no better time than now to own it and take charge to successfully plan for the years ahead. We’re here to help!

At Mortgage Choice North Sydney, we can assist with your home loans, finances, financial plans and more at all stages of your life. Amandine Rouviere, Applejack Hospitality Group Sommelier, RAFI, North Sydney

“Right now we only have female sommeliers on our team. It wasn’t intentional, but it’s clear women in wine are becoming more and more prominent. It’s great to see more women working in this field. Wine is a friend to everyone, irrespective of gender after all.

Growing up in the South of France, my dad worked in a vineyard and I’d often go to work with him. When I started working in hospitality, I quickly realised my interest lay in wine. After learning the basics, I was an Apprentice Sommelier at a Three Star Michelin restaurant before spending time at Michel Roux Jr’s Le Gavroche in London. I now work for Applejack Hospitality, who own The Botanist in Kirribilli and RAFI in North Sydney, where I’m based. I always encourage our guests to try something new and I love sharing wine, and the stories of wine, with them.”

Raising the

Meet the female sommeliers leading the local wine lists

Samantha Belt, Head Sommelier, Poetica Bar and Grill, North Sydney

“What used to be a “boys club” now has so many women in it. I’m so lucky to have been guided and influenced by so many powerful and confident female sommeliers who came before me. By the time I joined the club I was surrounded by role models and women I could look up to and learn from. Louella Mathews for one hosts women-led wine events which I love attending.

Networking is important to feel a sense of community and create spaces where we can celebrate and champion each other. Also attending formal tastings and events, being present as a female in the wine industry, and being seen by the younger generation, is so important for them to believe in their future and their career development as a woman.

The best thing about being a sommelier is how wine connects you to people around the world. Wine grows in almost every country and so you learn about all these histories, cultures, and traditions. When you meet people, they are so generous and excited to share it all with you and it is just fantastic. Wine and its trends are constantly evolving and changing, now more than ever, so it really is an awesome commitment.

Poetica’s wine list has approximately 600 labels and is heavily rooted in classical Australian wine regions and varieties with depth and age as well. The list is heavier on the red side being a grill and we have a

the glass

dry-ageing program, so we want to champion the best wines that the food helps come to life. The same ethos is reflected in the international offering with historical and well-loved regions - we can take our guests anywhere through the glass. Looking after the land and vineyards is so important for the future of wine so we actively work with those who are committed to sustainability. Our guests in North Sydney have a real appreciation for wine and love exploring different regions and styles. Northsiders also drink Chablis like it’s mineral water! They love to chat wine, which is always a good time.”

“NORTHSIDERS DRINK CHABLIS LIKE IT’S MINERAL WATER!”

Louella Mathews, Trippas White Group’s Group Sommelier, Me-Gal at Taronga Zoo, Mosman

“Women are kick ass at this job and I’ve always grabbed the advantage and run with it. We’re very fortunate to have brilliant women come before us, like Kim Bickley and Amanda Yallop. They really led the way and I’m very thankful to them. I always look out for who’s coming up, the next generation. If there’s new faces at tastings, I make a point of talking to them, and I encourage people to message me if they need advice. I’m really happy to help if I can.

I was 25 when I got my first pin and have been a sommelier for 10 years now. I currently look after 18 venues, including the beautiful Me-Gal at Taronga Zoo in Mosman. The wine list there has a huge focus on Australian wines. Fifty per cent of the wines are also made by female wine makers, and we have a code on the menu to highlight them.

Wine is truly special in the moment you drink it. It’s who you’re drinking it with, where you are, the story behind the wine... Whether you’re coming for lunch with friends and want an oaky chardonnay or if you’re celebrating and want a really nice champagne, I try to create lists that capture those moments. I like there to be something accessible and enjoyable for everyone.” l

A FAMILY welcome

Pet Medical Milsons Point is your local vet practice that feels like home

When local dogs go for walkies down Alfred Street, it’s not unusual to see tails start wagging when they reach number 28. What might be considered unusual is that inside the doors of this heritage, red brick terrace is a vet! But then Pet Medical Milsons Point isn’t your regular vet practice. The practice, which has been part of the northside community for over six years, is a favourite with our furry, feathered and scaly friends (and their humans!), who know that inside they’re encouraged to make themselves at home with treats and pats in the cosy and friendly low-stress reception area.

“AT OUR PRACTICE, WE TREAT OUR CLIENTS AND THEIR PETS AS MEMBERS OF OUR EXTENDED FAMILY”

In safe hands

Pet Medical Milsons Point’s Principals, Dr Jo-Ann Chan and husband Dr Eugene Ong, are the safe hands continuing the work of their former colleague Dr Cate Plummer, following her retirement earlier this year.

“Our clients and their pets are cherished members of our extended family, and we treat them with the same love and care,” Jo-Ann says.

North Sydney locals, Jo-Ann, Eugene and their three – soon to be four! – gorgeous children, live just a short walk away from the practice.

‘We love being so close to the harbour and all the parks,” Jo-Ann continues. “And the people are wonderful. It’s such a special area with a community of friendly and supportive locals who share our love for animals.”

A passion for pets

The couple’s passion for all things pets has passed on to their kids, with Faith, seven,

Clockwise from above: Jo-Ann giving Obi a health check; Eugene and Jo-Ann with their children; team Pet Medical Milsons Point!

Gemma, four, and Hugh, two, occasionally assisting with post-appointment cuddles in the waiting room on weekends.

“We believe in treating pets as members of our own family,” Jo-Ann explains. “That means going above and beyond to address not just their physical health, but also their emotional and social needs.”

With an in-house groomer and puppy school dog trainer joining the team, Jo-Ann and Eugene are excited to welcome more local pets to the practice.

Proudly independent

In an era dominated by mass corporatisation in the veterinary space, Pet Medical Milsons Point is a proudly independent, locallyowned family business.

“Over recent years a lot of large corporate practices have appeared,” Eugene says. “We’re proud to be independent and committed to our local community. When you bring your pet to Pet Medical Milsons Point, you know you’re

going to see familiar faces, from when you arrive at the reception desk to when you see the vets in the treatment rooms. There’s a special continuation of care for your pets which also helps reduce their anxiety levels.”

“Our practice isn’t just about treating pets,” Jo-Ann continues. “It’s about being a part of their journey, helping and supporting them to live their best possible lives. There’s something truly special about being a trusted part of locals’ pets’ lives and being able to make a difference to the lives of both pets and their owners.” l

Craving comfort food? Look no further than Norths Cammeray.

Head Chef Simon Kasses’ new menu is sure to satisfy...

I’ve always loved food, preparing it, smelling it, discovering it and obviously eating it!” Norths Cammeray’s Head Chef Simon Kasses tells northsider. “Growing up in Mildura, I was surrounded by wineries, fruit growing farms and fresh ingredients. Cooking with my mum and grandmother definitely inspired me to become a chef.”

Starting his apprenticeship at the age of 15, Simon moved to Sydney three years later,

working his way around kitchens, including at the Park Hyatt and Hilton Hotels, and also owning his own Italian restaurant, The Black Olive. “For the past two years I’ve been the Head Chef at Norths Cammeray, putting a contemporary twist on pub classics,” he says. “This Winter, I’m looking forward to working with beautiful Australian mushrooms and hearty winter beans and vegies. Perfect for all those delicious winter soups and stews!”

Norths Cammeray’s Sliced Chat Potato and Bacon Pizza

Top of the Winter menu at Norths is Simon’s super Vegetable Soup. Warm and hearty, it’s packed with carrots, chickpeas, garlic and cous cous as well as fragrant classic spices including ginger, turmeric, rosemary and thyme.

“I guarantee people will come back to this soup time and time again,” he says. “It warms the belly and the soul!”

Norths’ famous pizzas are getting a seasonal twist too, with a Sliced Chat Potato and Bacon variety appearing on the Winter menu. Expect handmade dough topped with a traditional Italian white base, thinly sliced chat potatoes and grilled bacon, all tucked underneath a cosy serve of gooey mozzarella.

“Each pizza is made with fresh handmade dough which is rolled with love and topped with delicious ingredients,” Simon explains. “The true culinary excellence lies in the quality of our ingredients. We use only the finest and freshest ingredients from our trusted suppliers.”

Italy is still on the menu with the third seasonal special, Gnocchi with Wild Mushroom and Creamy Truffle Sauce.

“Our soft, fluffy gnocchi is combined with earthy wild mushrooms and then tossed in a creamy sauce. We then top the dish with a generous sprinkle of fresh parmesan and a drizzle of black truffle oil,” Simon explains.

The final dish for Winter, a Raspberry Brioche Bread Pudding, is a dream for sweet tooths.

“Think warmed brioche doused in rich fresh cream and topped with raspberries,” Simon says. “Truly a comfort dessert.” l

“WE USE ONLY THE FINEST AND FRESHEST INGREDIENTS FROM TRUSTED SUPPLIERS”

Old favourites

The regular Norths’ menu will continue through Winter, so you can also spice up your tastebuds with members’ top dish, the South East Asian street food fave, Nasi Goreng, or tuck in to Simon’s personal favourite, the Lamb Shank complemented with creamy mash, steamed peas, sautéed green beans and gravy. “Guaranteed to hit the spot every day of the week,” he concludes.

With Winter upon us, I wanted to share a recipe for one of my all-time favourite desserts, good old, cockle warming Apple Crumble. It’s really straightforward to make and can be knocked up in no time should unexpected guests arrive. There’s nothing more comforting than the smell of this baking as they walk through the door. I’ve added a couple of twists to the traditional recipe, such as using flour in the filling and nuts, lemon and ginger in the topping. For me, the ginger adds a little extra warmth and depth of flavour while the flour thickens the filling a touch to make it syrupy and delicious. Serve with custard, which was possibly my favourite thing to eat in the world when I was growing up (that may - or may nothave changed haha!) I hope you enjoy this Winter warmer as much as I do.

Enjoy! Will x

Crumble

Local foodie, TV presenter and cookbook author Will Stewart shares his twist on this Winter fave...

APPLE CRUMBLE WITH GINGER AND LEMON

SERVES:

6-8 TAKES: 45-60 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS:

Filling:

1kg apples, peeled and cored (I use Granny Smith)

1 tbsp flour

½ cup raw sugar

2 tbsp lemon juice

½ tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla bean paste

Topping:

100g rolled oats

150g plain flour

METHOD:

100g brown sugar

100g hazelnuts, roughly chopped

1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

3 inch piece of ginger, peeled and finely grated

Zest of 1 lemon

Pinch of salt

125g unsalted butter, melted

To Serve: Lashings of custard

• Preheat oven to 180 degrees, fan forced.

• For the filling, dice the apples into 1.5-2cm pieces and put them into a large bowl. Sprinkle over the flour until evenly coated, then add the sugar, vanilla bean paste and cinnamon. Finally, add the lemon juice and mix together before transferring to an ovenproof dish.

• To make the topping, put all of the ingredients except the melted butter in the bowl you used for the filling and gently mix everything together. Pour in the butter and continue mixing until clumps begin to form, then crumble the mixture over the top of the filling.

• Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly, for about 10 minutes, to allow the filling to thicken.

• Serve with custard and enjoy!

Introducing KYDS, the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre’s free youth counselling service

Northside children and teens can access free mental health

support five days a week thanks to the collaboration between KYDS confidential counselling services and the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre

KYDS counselling service was set up to help young people understand, and manage, difficult issues in their lives by providing easily accessed, personalised counselling and mental health support services, family counselling, and wellbeing workshops and information events.

it easier for them to get the support they needed.

Partnering with Ku-ring-gai Council, Rotary raised funds to form KYDS, which opened in March 2005 with a single counsellor at Lindfield Library. The organisation supported 36 young people in its first year.

Today, the dedicated team provides support to more than 400 young people each year at various locations across Northern Sydney and delivers over 7500 counselling sessions annually.

The idea for the service was sparked back in 2003 at the Lindfield Rotary Club as a way of helping to combat the rising rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide among young people in Ku-ring-gai.

The founders recognised obstacles were preventing young people from seeking help and decided to create a local service to make

“WE’RE HERE TO EMPOWER YOUNG PEOPLE TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES FOR THEIR MENTAL HEALTH”

Sessions at the KNC are fully funded and topics covered by KYDS counselling include grief and loss, family breakups, friendship problems, school and study stress, addictions, risky behaviour, anger, bullying, anxiety, depression, alcohol and drug use, body image concerns, mental health concerns, self-harm and suicidal thoughts and more.

“We’re super happy to be at the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre,” KYDS CEO Dr Anthony Rigney tells northsider. “The space and the team are so warm and welcoming. Young people and carers tells us how therapeutic it is there and with lots of schools nearby, it really opens up our services for those in North Sydney.”

KYDS CEO
Dr Anthony Rigney

“We work with young people from 10-18 years old, up to their 19th birthday,” he continues. “Our work is needs based and we’re there for them for long as they need our support. We work holistically alongside schools and other professionals to help young people achieve their goals. We’re here to empower them to make the right choices for their mental health.”

“The pressures children are put under is immense,” KNC General Manager, Jo Harvey, adds. “Supporting them is a priority for us and being able to offer free counselling in a non-clinical environment in the local area is something we are extremely proud of. Being able to offer counselling five days a week has always been a long-term goal and we couldn’t be happier to partner with KYDS.”

To be eligible for free counselling sessions, the KNC asks that young people live or go to school in the Northern Sydney region, are aged 10-18 years old (or attending Year 12 or equivalent), are willing to engage in counselling and have some flexibility in terms of availability to attend sessions.

To find out more and book a session, head to thekirribillicentre.org or kyds.org.au; or call 9416 0900 to refer to KYDS or email counsellor@kyds.org.au. Sessions can be available a few weeks after referral. l

KYDS’ Self Care Tips

Ted the puggle, northsider’s ‘rover’ reporter, meets

senior pup Basil Bowdler the Border Terrier

“You’re never too

old for treats!”

Ted: Hi Basil! You’re 17 years old. What a good age for a doggo.

Basil: You’ll need to bark up a bit Teddy boy, I’m a little deaf these days! I was born in December 2007 so I’m an old chap at 17 and a half years old. That’s about 85 in human years. I’m largely retired now and live in McMahons Point on my paw-rents Chris and Wendy’s superannuation. I’ve heard them say they’re actually my poor-rents because of my vet bills but I think my charm, wit and good looks are worth every cent.

T: How long have you lived in the area?

B: About eight years. I spent my time before that in Greenwich but my mum was born and grew up in McMahons Point so that’s why we moved back. She said that the

the

area has changed a lot over the years. For example, there used to be a petrol station at the bottom of Blues Point Road opposite the pub, and also a butcher. I wish there was a butcher there now who handed out delicious treats to local dogs. Mum remembers when Sawmillers Reserve was an actual sawmill and she also said there was a fun wine bar called the Grape Escape - I’ve heard lots of locals reminiscing about it! There’s lots more places I can go these days that are doggo friendly which is good but there’s also more competition in the cuteness stakes from all those fluffy poodle doodles.

T: What’s the best thing about living here? B: The excellent variety of grass, lamp posts and fences for sniffing.

T: What’s your fave food?  When I was younger I loved crunchy things like beef and lamb bones and chicken legs. But they’re a bit more of a memory now, just like my poor old teeth.

T: What’s your fave hobby?

B: I love having a good sniff of the grass, especially after a bit of rain. I used to love walking

all the way to Sawmillers Reserve when I was a young pup, but these days I’ll usually head to the pocket park on East Crescent Street now that my legs are older. A close second to grass sniffing is checking fresh pee-mails on one of the lamp posts on Blues Point Road. I might be an old boy, but I’ve got to keep up with all my friend’s latest posts!

T: Do you have a fave local spot for pats and refreshments?

B: My favourite spots these days are Breadworks Café on Blues Point Road to see Dan and the crew in the mornings. I’ll head to the Blues Point Hotel’s verandah in the arvo. I like to have a sit down and a think away from all those younger doggos. I’ll help with the local’s Sudoku puzzles and I always get a few treats from them too. You’re never too old for treats.

T: What’s the naughtiest thing you’ve done?

B: I did go through a phase of chewing on the garden watering system but that was in my younger days when I had a good set of gnashers. I remember that the replaced sections were especially chewy. Yum.

T: Thanks for having a yap with me on the dog and bone Basil. Sounds like there’s still plenty of life left in this old dog!

B: Too right Ted! See you at the Blues Point for a bowl of water soon. l

As the cold and wet season dawns upon us, wet shoes and wet fur become a more frequent occurrence! Excessive moisture trapped in your pet’s fur increases the chances of them developing skin infections. Here are 3 tips to help your pets this winter:

• Towel dry their body and paws after walks.

• Routinely inspect their fur for hair mats.

• Keep their fur around their paws short. If you notice any areas that look red, wet, or raised, your pet may require veterinary care.

BAGS OF

love

How a suitcase gives hope to children in need

Fran Signorelli gently places the soft onesie, cuddly toy and hand knitted blanket inside the tightly filled bag. Giving the contents a once over, she slides a beautifully written card on top before closing the zip, “You are loved so much,” it reads inside.

The bag that Willoughby local Fran has carefully packed isn’t for the arrival of a much-anticipated grandchild. It’s destined for a tiny newborn who has nothing - not even a teddy bear - to call their own.

Hard-working Fran is the local northside co-ordinator for Hope In A Suitcase, a non-profit organisation that provides suitcases and bags filled with essential items and messages of hope to children entering foster or out-of-home care. And with around 47,000 children in out-of-home care across Australia, 16,000 of them in NSW, the need for these bags of love is greater than ever.

“Some kids come in to care with nothing but the clothes on their backs, they don’t even have pyjamas, and the one day old babies can have absolutely nothing,” Fran

Handmade toys from the Dougherty Centre Knitting Group become much loved additions to suitcases.

tells northsider. “What we’re doing is more than sending a bag. It’s not just the items inside that matter to these kids. It’s the message of hope and empowerment that goes with them. We want these kids to know they are loved and that people care.”

Fran and her small, dedicated team of eight fellow volunteers spend hours packing suitcases with new items that have been donated by locals. The bags cover a range of ages and are filled with items including toiletries and toothbrushes, underwear, pyjamas, three sets of clothes and more. There’s always a book to read, toys to play with and activities to do, like a colouring set or ball game, as well as something to cuddle. “We squeeze in as much as we can!” Fran laughs.

“THE NORTHSIDE COMMUNITY IS SO WONDERFUL.. PEOPLE ARE GIVING ALL THE TIME”

Fran and husband

Paul dropping suitcases off

Each bag costs roughly $200 to assemble, with a number of local schools, organisations, such as the Northbridge Rotary, and businesses including Qantas, all helping out. The group also received a grant from Willoughby Council and is so grateful for the support they receive from families and individuals in the area.

“When I first started volunteering for Hope In A Suitcase in 2022, Rachael who set the initiative up, told me to be patient and that it might take six months to be able to deliver the first set of bags,” Fran remembers. “But everyone got to work and that first delivery of 40 bags went out to kids just a month later. I couldn’t believe it!”

“The northside community is so wonderful,” she continues. “People are giving all the time and will call me up to ask what we need so they can go and buy it. School kids donate their pocket money and a former foster child recently asked for donations instead of gifts at their birthday party.”

Local legend Fran Signorelli

Sharing hope

Hope In A Suitcase was started by NSW woman, Rachael Clancy, whose parents were foster carers. Rachael grew up seeing children arriving at their home with nothing but a plastic bag of belongings. She vowed to change this and founded Hope In A Suitcase as a non-profit organisation in 2018. Run by volunteers across NSW, Qld, Vic and Tas, the group’s mission is to provide children entering foster or out-of-home care with a suitcase of essentials to call their own and a message of hope. In 2023, they provided 5013 suitcases to children in care. To find more out about HIASC and to donate funds, head to hiasc.org.au

with one 105-year-old member crafting a number of beautiful handmade items.

For locals looking to help, the main Hope In A Suitcase drop off location in the area can be found at the heart of the community at Fran and hubby Paul’s florist, the High Street Flower Market in Willoughby. They accept donations on Thursdays and Sundays.

“Paul’s father, Vince, opened the shop 44 years ago,” Fran says. “And Paul and I first met there as teenagers when he was working at the florist and I was attending Willoughby Girls School up the road. We were High Street sweethearts!”

Married for 40 years, the couple were foster carers themselves while raising their own children.

“WE WANT THESE KIDS TO KNOW THEY ARE LOVED AND THAT PEOPLE CARE”

Clockwise from top left: Bags packed and ready to close; Fran, second right, with some local HIASC volunteers; handmade bunnies from the Dougherty Centre knitting group; Fran’s lounge room!

Bottom left: A batch of bags in the van and ready to go.

“No matter what age these kids are, they deserve our love and help,” Fran says. “If you’d like to donate items, remember, one item is better than no items and you don’t need to make up a whole bag. I’ve got so many boxes of things at home that I can mix and match we can’t even get the car in the garage!”

Sadly, the demand for Hope In A Suitcase bags is only growing year-on-year. For example, Fran and her team organised 190 bags for children for the whole of 2023. By March 2024, that number had already reached 90.

“There is a huge need,” Fran says. “Some of the babies coming straight from the Royal North Shore are missing out on a bag so I’m trying to work out how to fill that gap.

“These kids might go between 12-15 different homes, so for bubs we include a baby book that their carers can fill with photos. We think it’s important these children have something to look back on when they’re older.”

Want to donate?

Head to the High Street Flower Market Facebook page for updates on items Fran currently needs. All items must be brand new and some commonly requested essentials include:

♥ Baby wash

♥ Toothpaste

♥ Night lights for toddlers

♥ UNO or playing cards

♥ Bouncy balls

♥ Colouring pencils

♥ Books

♥ Brushes and hair accessories

♥ Soft toys – under 20cms

“It gives me great happiness to say I can do this,” she concludes. “These children deserve to have things they can call their own. Together we can make a difference to their young lives.” l Want to help? You can contact Fran directly via email northsydney@hiasc.org.au or on 0416 238 826. Donations can be dropped to the High Street Flower Market, 201 High Street, Willoughby on Thursdays and Sundays.

My favourite place for coffee is…Zeppin Café in North Sydney, right next to Coles. Breakfast is good and the staff are super friendly! The best meal I’ve had locally was at…without a doubt Taruhachi Bento in North Sydney. The most authentic Japanese which serves up killer Japanese whisky and gin cocktails. If I want to have a beer or a wine, I go to…RAFI. They have an awesome wine list and the best Happy Hour from 3-6pm daily. If I want a cocktail, I go to Bamfords, Kirribilli. Their Bombay Bramble is my go to!

Local’s last word.

Joe Menezes has lived in North Sydney for two years

My fave local takeaway is… Kirribilli Seafoods. Bring a bottle of Champagne and a blanket and enjoy your fish and chips in Bradfield Park, with glorious Sydney Harbour views.

My top 3 fave shops in the area are: Le Pont in Milsons Point for the most incredible selection of wine; Loulou, also in Milsons Point for mouthwatering French treats; Olive and Moss in North Sydney for the most amazing flowers. If we’ve got guests in town, we’ll take them to… Charlotte Bistro in McMahons Point for a long lunch! If

they’re staying a few days, we’d have dinner at Lavendra Indian restaurant in Lavender Bay and we’d go to a show at Ensemble Theatre as well.

Our fave local spots for our pets include…I love taking my cockatiels for a walk to Milson Park in their bird backpack. It’s close to home, picturesque and the perfect place to sit back and relax. The secret spot I love to go to is…the community garden near my house. Great to tend to my green thumbs and handy to pick up fresh tomatoes, chillis, herbs and even limes and mint when I’m making homemade mojitos!

The thing about living in this area we love the most is…the people. On my street everyone knows each other. It definitely has a real community spirit.
