fabulous!
Meet Queen of the North, drag superstar and mirror ball on legs, Prada Clutch
With her signature rainbow wig and sparkling silver sequin suit, Prada Clutch doesn’t just enter a room, she completely dazzles it.
With 17 years’ of stage performances under her glittery belt, the drag queen, presenter and singer has entertained audiences all over the world and regularly brings her trademark style and wit to her local club, Norths Cammeray.
“The greatest joy that drag gives me is the satisfaction of helping people forget >>
their worries while I perform,” Prada tells northsider. “When I go out on stage, it’s my mission to help the audience have fun. There’s often a lot of drama going on in people’s lives but when a mirror ball on legs walks in, how can you not smile?”
Prada’s drag bingo nights at Norths are a favourite for locals.
“I love my shows in Cammeray,” she continues. “They’re on a Monday and the crowd is always packed, with everyone up for having a laugh and a good time. The northside community is fabulous.”
This Summer, there’s even more Prada to look forward to, with a Mardi Gras bingo extravaganza planned at Norths on Friday 21 February. “It’s going to be a night of fun, celebration and surprises,” she teases.
Prada, who trained in Musical Theatre at the Australian Institute of Music, first sashayed to the main stage of professional drag when she was 18 years old.
“Back then the drag scene was very different,” she recalls. “There were no make up tutorials on the internet to practise at home and people told me
“THE GREATEST JOY THAT DRAG GIVES ME IS THE SATISFACTION OF HELPING PEOPLE FORGET THEIR WORRIES WHILE I PERFORM”
that I couldn’t make a career out of doing drag, that I’d need another full time job. Things have changed a lot since then thanks to the internet, social media and TV shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race. Drag’s a lot more mainstream now. More people are doing it, and doing it with confidence, and wider audiences are more curious to know what drag’s about too.”
From hosting packed bingo nights and singing live on stage to bringing the glam to birthday parties and serving looks at events like Mardi Gras, Prada knows how to connect with people from all walks of life. “I’m an open book,” she continues. “I’m a person exactly like you. If I’ve got a corn on my toe, I’m going to make a joke and tell you about it!”
“Some audience members might come to a show with their arms folded, unsure what to expect, but by the end, they’re at the front of the line for the meet-and-greet, laughing away with their friends,” she says. “I’ve had people tell me, ‘I had the worst day and I’m so glad I came to see you because you’ve made me feel so much better.’ And that’s why I do this.”
Prada recalls performing at an 80th birthday party and staying in touch with the birthday girl. “She broke her hip and I visited her in hospital in full drag. She introduced me to everyone as her friend Prada. Moments like this are the reason I love what I do.”
Whether she’s singing a Cher classic or throwing shade on stage, Prada’s goal is always the same: to spread joy. “People come to my shows and tell me their faces hurt from laughing. That’s the best feedback I could ever get.”
Prada Clutch shares her top tips for sleigh-ing the holiday season in style
Party like a queen!
Party time!
One way to guarantee your party will be a success is to hire me of course! But seriously, if you’re hosting, your job is to make sure everyone feels welcome and included. Find the person sitting quietly and make them feel seen. Compliment their outfit, ask their name, and connect. Shock works wonders too so break the ice with something unexpected - tell everyone you’re moving overseas or something equally outrageous, even if it’s not true, or wear a loud outfit. It is silly season after all! It’s all about getting everyone to start talking and let their guard down.
Entertaining awkward guests
your head, try to rewrite it. If you walk into a room like you own it, soon enough, you’ll believe it yourself. And if you’re at a party, and want a bit of Dutch courage to help, there’s no judgement from me!
Embrace your fierceness
Look, it’s tricky when it’s family, but maybe just don’t invite them?! I’m joking of course! Not everyone is a party person, and that’s ok. My best advice would be to listen to them. A little kindness goes a long way and people usually tell you what they want or they need – whether that’s someone to talk to, or some space to themselves. You’ll probably be surprised at what you’ll learn!
Fake it ‘til you make it
I’ll tell you a secret – most people who seem confident probably don’t actually feel very confident inside. They just hold themselves with confidence and fool everyone! If you’ve got the belief that you have no confidence in
One of my favourite quotes is ‘What other people think of me is none of my business’ from legendary American drag queen, RuPaul. It’s true, it really doesn’t matter what other people think. I’ve learned to focus on having fun and being happy. People are going to look… or maybe they’re not! And who cares? Don’t even think about it. Let go, be yourself and the minute you stop comparing yourself to others, things will fall into place.
Life’s better with a sprinkle of sequins
Be bold! Wear those rainbow shoes or the green bowler hat or the sparkly kaftan if it makes you feel fabulous. Your outfit is a conversation starter, and it’ll give you a confidence boost too. ●

With native gardens and working bees, this local grassroots project is feeding wildlife and fostering biodiversity
Anew way of volunteering for wildlife conservation is flourishing at the heart of Northbridge. The Growing Food For Wildlife Project is a community organisation that’s bringing locals together to foster an appreciation of native plants and grow food for rescued wildlife.
The initiative was started by northsider Shaun Warden, a wildlife rehabilitator and aspiring vet, who knows firsthand the demands of caring for sick, injured and orphaned native animals. “A Common Brushtail Possum needs around 2kgs of fresh foliage every night,” he shares. “Sourcing food for animals in care is a challenge and many volunteers have to spend hours trimming street trees for foliage.”
“WE HELP OUT WITH WHICH NATIVES TO GROW FOR YOUR AREA”
After spending up to eight hours a week foraging to feed animals in his care, Shaun devised the Growing Food for Wildlife Project. Run entirely by volunteers, the group aims to provide a sustainable food source for animals and gets locals involved by inviting the community to dig in and help.
In partnership with Willoughby City Council and Bushcare, Shaun and the team hold local working bees on the fourth Saturday of every month, meeting from 10am-12pm at Flat Rock Gully Walking Track in Northbridge. Gardeners of all ages gather to learn about native plants, connect with wildlife rehabilitators, and do hands-on work that makes a real difference.
“A typical session includes educational talks, weeding, watering, planting and harvesting food for wildlife,” Shaun explains. “There’s plenty of fun too! It’s a great group.”
For those wanting to cultivate their involvement further, the project encourages
and
nature heal
locals to create native gardens at home and donate surplus greenery to animals in need. “While plants might be native to Australia, they might not be native to the north shore,” Shaun says. “We can help out with which ones are most suitable to support wildlife in the area. You’ll never regret planting natives. They support biodiversity, help with pest control, and look stunning.”
Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or new to gardening, the Growing Food for Wildlife Project is an opportunity to connect and contribute to the local ecosystem. The team now have four plots across Sydney and are looking for more suitable locations on the northside. “It can be as simple as a small plot of unused land,” Shaun says. “Wherever a site is established, the land will be maintained and cared for, as well as being used for education, social inclusion and habitat restoration. We can all do our bit to combat the extinction crisis, right here in our own backyards,” he concludes. ● Want to get involved? Head to growingfoodforwildlifeproject.org for info.

A LOCAL HISTORY
Left and above: Music Hall owners, George and Lorna Miller, were talented musicians. Every night, they would circulate the venue wearing Victorian costume to entertain patrons during the dinner service.
PHOTOS: MITCHELL LIBRARY, STATE LIBRARY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
Moments in time
The infamous Music Hall Restaurant on Military Road in Neutral Bay served up dinner with a side of melodrama from 1961-1980. Previously a cinema, owners George and Lorna Miller converted the building into a Victorian style theatre restaurant, removing the stalls and replacing them with dining tables to seat over 500 guests who’d enjoy a three course meal and a show. The venue presented light-hearted productions
which recalled the days of Victorian music hall and vaudeville. Audience participation was encouraged and the poster for the debut production requested patrons “Hiss the villain, Weep with the Heroine and All join in the choruses.” Staff wore Victorian period costume, including George and Lorna, who would warm up the crowd with tableside musical numbers. The iconic venue was hugely popular up until it closed its doors in 1980. ●
A dramatic landmark
The Music Hall closed due to fire safety issues and the building was demolished. The site on Military Road is now occupied by a low-rise shop and office complex named East Lynne, after the first and final production at the theatrical venue.
CONFIDENCE Restoring
Hair loss affects millions of people and can significantly impact your quality of life. Dr Jeremy Choy and Dr Bobbie Choy PhD from True Edge Medical in Crows Nest introduce Regenera Activa, a revolutionary non-surgical treatment that helps restore dormant hair follicles and promotes natural hair regrowth.
Q: What causes hair loss?
A: Hair loss can be caused by many factors, the most common being our genetics. Other factors can include medical conditions, stress, nutritional deficiencies and medications.
Q: What treatments are available?
A: Traditional approaches include prescription medications, topical solutions, such as creams or shampoos, or painful and invasive hair transplants. However, there’s now another option that offers successful hair regeneration for mild to moderate hair loss in both men and women. It’s called Regenera Activa and we’re excited to be offering this breakthrough non-surgical treatment in advanced follicle regeneration exclusively to the North Shore.
Q: What is Regenera Activa?
A: This groundbreaking and minimally invasive treatment uses autologous micrograft technology, derived from your own tissue, to reactivate dormant hair follicles, stop them from shrinking and reduce scalp inflammation. During the straight forward procedure, a small tissue sample is taken from the back of the
scalp. This is processed in-clinic to extract a concentrated solution which is then injected into targeted areas to stimulate hair growth. The best part? It’s a same-day procedure with minimal discomfort and no downtime, allowing you to get back to your day.
Q: What’s the recovery like?
A: Recovery is quick. The area the tissue samples are taken from heals in a few days.
Q: How long do the results last?
A: Unlike other treatments that require ongoing sessions, Regenera Activa typically involves just one treatment. You’ll notice an improvement in your hair quality and fullness in 3-4 months and results can last up to two years, or even longer.
Q: Why choose True Edge Medical?
A: At True Edge Medical we recognise how much hair loss can affect your confidence and overall well-being. We’re the leading hair restoration clinic in the Northern Sydney area and our trusted team is led by hair restoration specialist, Dr. Jeremy Choy, a key opinion leader for Regenera Activa. Our mission is to help you regain your self-esteem and transform your hair with expert care and state-of-the-art solutions. Book a consultation today and let us guide you toward a fuller, healthier head of hair. ●

Family violence
It is a sad indictment that so many of the articles which I have written over the last few years delve into family violence.
There is an element of family violence in over 70% of cases before the family courts.
Family violence takes many forms including sexual and physical abuse, financial abuse, emotional abuse and coercive control.
Unfortunately, there is still an enormous lack of understanding about family violence which doesn’t take the form of physical abuse. Even many victims of emotional abuse or coercive control don’t consider themselves to be in an abusive relationship. There is still a desperate need for better education of the judiciary and the police about the nuances of abusive
relationships. We see many victims of long standing emotional abuse finally cracking and lashing out and then finding themselves at the wrong end of an AVO or common assault charge.
If you are being isolated from friends and family, if your spending is monitored or unreasonably restricted by your partner, if you feel coerced into doing something against your will because of threats of recrimination, if you feel frightened or intimidated or that you’re constantly “walking on egg shells”, then you may be in an abusive relationship. It is crucial to get support. Phone 1800 RESPECT or speak to a family lawyer.

Leeanne Scott and Robert
Bulgin from Mortgage Choice North Sydney share their top real-estate buying tips
BUYER’S AGENTS EXPLAINED
From local homes to interstate investments, a buyer’s agent can help transform the property purchase process by saving you time, money, and stress. At Mortgage Choice North Sydney, we’ve seen an increase in the number of buyer’s agents working with clients. With exclusive market insights, access to offmarket properties, and expert negotiation skills, they’re increasingly becoming an essential part of the buying journey. As well as being able to provide expert data and analysis of the area you’re looking to buy into, experienced buyer’s agents can save you time in inspecting properties and assist with those all important price negotiations. How a buyer’s agent can add value
Buyer’s agents are a versatile resource, helping clients across various stages of the buying journey. And the benefits of engaging a buyer’s agent can far exceed the initial investment. Recently, one of our local clients was looking to buy an investment property in Melbourne. We recommended one of our trusted partners, who assisted in the entire process. The buyer’s agent’s negotiation skills saved the client more than their fee, as they advocated for a price reduction on the
property that the client hadn’t expected. Not only did the buyer save money, but they also avoided travel, inspections, and the stress of direct negotiations.

northsider goes behind the scenes at Bayly’s Bistro, the Ensemble Theatre’s waterfront restaurant
As audiences gather for a world-class performance at Kirribilli’s Ensemble Theatre, another stage is being set downstairs at the venue’s waterfront restaurant, Bayly’s Bistro, where Head Chef Ian Aguilar and his team deliver a menu that’s as crowd-pleasing as the dramatic productions it accompanies.
“We’re so lucky to have this restaurant right on the harbour,” Ian says. “You can take
in the views, enjoy a delicious meal and experience some of Sydney’s best theatre, all in one visit.”
Aguilar, who’s originally from Arequipa in southern Peru, discovered his passion for cooking as a child and started to hone his skills in South America. Arriving in Sydney in 2009, he continued his culinary training and joined the Ensemble Theatre team in 2018. He became the venue’s Head Chef in early 2024.
“SEAFOOD IS A SPECIALTY, ALWAYS FRESH AND COOKED TO PERFECTION”
Bayly’s Bistro Head Chef Ian Aguilar
MENU
Under Ian’s direction, Bayly’s Bistro offers a Modern Australian menu with an emphasis on local, seasonal and sustainably sourced produce. Every six weeks, it’s curtain up on new menu items to tie in with the opening nights of the theatre’s new productions, with seasonal produce taking centre stage.
“Seafood is a specialty, always fresh and cooked to perfection,” Ian says. “A standout is our Grilled Octopus, paired with roast potatoes, olives, cherry tomatoes, roasted capsicum, and a smoky romesco sauce. The octopus is slow-cooked for hours before being charred on the grill, creating a dish that’s both tender and bursting with flavour.”
Other menu highlights include the creamy Burrata, served with caramelised fig balsamic glaze, basil, roasted cherry tomatoes and melba toast, and the

Slow-Cooked Turkey Breast accompanied by pea purée, Brussels sprouts, crispy kale, smoked capsicum, and port jus.
“We cook our meat very slowly so it’s really moist and tender and we serve it with a great sauce and a combination of fresh vegetables,” Ian explains. “Simple and delicious.”
And let’s not forget the big finale. Bayly’s menu boasts indulgent dessert options like Sticky Date Pudding with brandy butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, or a classic Pavlova topped with vanilla whipped mascarpone cream, citrus curd and fresh seasonal berries.
For Ian, creating dishes that delight is all about connecting with his guests.
“Our customers are my biggest inspiration,” he enthuses. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing clean plates coming back to the kitchen.” l

DINNER
TV Chef and northside local, Adam Liaw, shares a speedy and delicious meal idea from his new book, Time For Dinner
All fried rice dishes rely on the combination of egg and rice. In this dish, the egg is added on top when serving rather than fried with the rice. The added ‘sprinkles’ of sesame seeds, spring onions (scallions) and nori are unmissable highlights.
KIMCHI AND GARLIC BUTTER FRIED RICE
SERVES: 2
ACTIVE TIME: 5 MINUTES
COOKING TIME: 10 MINUTES
INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus extra for frying the eggs
2 tablespoons finely chopped spring onions (scallions)
Black pepper
1 pack Korean toasted seasoned nori, to serve
METHOD:
• Heat a large frying pan over medium heat, add the oil and fry the eggs until the white is set but the yolks are still runny. Remove from the pan and set aside. Return the pan to the heat, add the garlic and fry until fragrant and lightly browned. Add the kimchi, sesame oil and gochujang and fry until fragrant. Add the rice and season very well with salt.
• Fry for about 3 minutes until the rice is well mixed and starting to toast. Stir through the butter.
• Divide the rice between two bowls and top each with a fried egg. Scatter with sesame seeds, spring onion and plenty of black pepper. Serve with the nori.
TIP: My wife, Asami, always asks why my fried kimchi dishes taste so good and, without wanting to detract from the perfect balance of savoury and sour in good kimchi, the secret is butter. Kimchi and butter are a match made in heaven.

“I
Ted the puggle, northsider’s ‘rover’ reporter, meets Bruce the Beagle, seven months, who’s been looking for a fur-ever home with the help of North Shore Dog Rescue
can’t wait to go on adventures every
Ted: Hi Bruce! Tell us about how you came to stay with North Shore Dog Rescue.
Bruce: My family weren’t able to look after me anymore and North Shore Dog Rescue said they could help rehome me. The team look after lots of dogs like me and they find us fur-ever families. I was a bit stressed when I was surrendered, but I’m loving the 5-star care my foster mum Martine has been giving me. We go on adventures everyday!
T: What’s your day like in foster care?
B: As soon as my Martine wakes up, we go for a loooong walk, somewhere different every day. Sniffing is my favourite pastime, it’s what I do best! When we get home I have my breakfast, then I rest and sniff in the backyard while Martine works. I have a bone around lunch time and in the afternoon we

jump in the car and head for the dog park where I play with my friends Chief the Bull Mastiff, Staffy Cross Bella and Trevor the Jack Russell. When we get home it’s time for dinner and snuggles on the lounge.
T: Why is the NSDR’s work is so important?
B: For dogs like me, when there’s no other option for my family other than to rehome, it’s a godsend. They are the Sydney arm of Dog Rescue Newcastle and they give us a chance at a new life. As well as settling us in with a foster family and getting us vet care, they make sure potential adopters are a good fit, and even do yard checks with them to make sure we’ll be safe and secure.
T: Is the rescue busy at the moment?
B: It’s very busy. The hoomans tell me there are a lot of factors causing this, such as cost of living. Having a pet can be expensive with vet bills, food, training and more. Then there’s rentals not always allowing pets and senior humans who may not be able to look after their pets anymore. There’s so many factors that mean we might need help and so many of us looking for a new home.
T: What should people think about before getting a pet?
B: I’d advise hoomans to do their research and spend time talking to friends with pets to understand the time, cost, and commitment needed.
Animal MATTERS
The puppy stage can last up to a year and I’m told we can be challenging! I’d advise hoomans to think about fostering. It’s a really great way to get a real life view of what owning a pet would be like with a shorter term commitment. At the same time, they will be helping good bois like me to find a new life.
T: What are you looking for in your fur-ever family?
B: Ideally they will love taking me on lots of adventures and have heaps of energy to keep up with me! I’m a smart doggo, so I would love them to continue with my training to help me be the goodest I can be.
T: How can northsiders help out NSDR if they’re not able to adopt?
B: There are lots of ways they can help! Fostering is a great way to help as you learn what it’s like to own a dog and help us find our fur-ever homes. Sometimes the hoomans foster fail too, which means they fall in love and end up adopting us. Helping out with walkies or doggy daycare are other ways to get involved with us dogs in care. Donations are always a grrrreat help and Martine says they always need volunteers for transport, events, and even puppy cuddles. We all think cuddles are pawsome! She says to head to @northshore.dogrescue on the socials to get in touch and find out more. ●

Pawsitively Cool: Summer Grooming to Keep Your Dog Fresh and Tick-Free!
As the summer heats up, regular grooming is key to keeping your dog comfortable and healthy. A well-maintained coat not only helps them stay cool by allowing better airflow, but also prevents matting and irritation. Grooming makes it easier to spot any skin issues or sneaky ticks, which can be harder to find in a thicker, unkempt coat. Plus, regular brushing and trimming can reduce shedding and keep your home a little less hairy!
Why not treat your furry friend to a summer spa session with our in-house groomer at Pet Medical Milsons Point? As well as feeling refreshed, clean, and much more comfortable in the heat, your dog will love the pampering, and you’ll love knowing they’re feeling their best! ●

PARENTS Empowering
The Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre and KYDS Youth
Counselling Service introduce
The Parent Hope Project
Parents and carers can now access a free local program devised to empower them with the tools to better support their children.
“The Parent Hope Project is a seven-week, manualised approach, working alongside parents and carers to support the discovery of new ways of connecting with their child,” says the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre’s General Manager, Jo Harvey. “We’re delighted to be able to start delivery of this fully funded program from January 2025 and are accepting referrals from adults keen to take part.”
The Parent Hope Project is an extension of the collaboration between the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre and KYDS counselling services, who run free sessions from the KNC five days a week for locals aged 10-18 years old. The new adult support program can be delivered in parallel with KYDS counselling or just to parents and carers, which can be particularly useful if the young person does not want to engage with mental health support.
“BEING ABLE TO OFFER FREE SERVICES LIKE THESE IN THE LOCAL AREA IS SOMETHING WE’RE EXTREMELY PROUD OF”
“Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre and KYDS believe that parents and carers play an important role in symptom reduction in young people and that this can be achieved through practical adjustments in how they interact with their young person,” Jo continues. “Being able to offer free services like these in the local area is something we’re extremely proud of. We couldn’t be happier to continue to develop and grow our partnership with KYDS into 2025.”

Meet the northsiders stepping up to the plate to serve the street community
It’s the Saturday evening before Christmas. The Summer sky is glowing, a grill is sizzling and chatter fills the air. But instead of taking place in a backyard in the suburbs, this festive BBQ is heating up in Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD. And the family gathering to share conversations and a meal are a mixture of streeties – members of the homeless community - and the team from The Alfresco Community Kitchen, a locally-based organisation that supports those in need, whatever the season.
Co-ordinated by lower north shore locals Tash Sanjay, Carly Hall, Melanie Ford and Ameey Lau, The Alfresco Community Kitchen continues the work started by late homeless
“THERE’S NO CRITERIA, NO RULES ABOUT WHO WE HELP”
community advocate and activist, Lanz Priestley. Known as the unofficial Mayor of Martin Place, Lanz organised the 24-7 Street Kitchen, a community lifeline that started in 1991.
“We all worked with Lanz at the 24-7 Street Kitchen during Covid,” Roseville mum of three Tash tells northsider. “He’d been homeless himself and the organisation he created offered streeties what they actually needed, not an assumption of what they needed. He had an amazing way of drawing people in, treating everyone with respect and dignity.”
“Before he passed away in 2021, Lanz asked us to carry on his work,” Willoughby mum of four Carly continues.
The ladies immediately agreed to continue bringing nourishing meals to those experiencing homelessness or hardship.
“Lanz even inspired the name of the kitchen,” Carly says. “At the end of lockdown, the NSW Government announced an alfresco
dining program…Lanz joked that we already had one of those…”
Three years on, come rain or shine, you’ll find The Alfresco Community Kitchen team serving up delicious, nutritious food every Tuesday and every other Saturday nights.
“We wanted to keep everything as similar as we could to what Lanz created,” Tash says. “We turn up with food and we serve. There’s no criteria, no rules about who we help. Anyone who lines up receives what they need.”
Through their commitment to the community, the team have earned the trust and respect of the people they serve.
“It took a while because there have been other groups who start up and then stop coming along, so the streeties can be wary,” Tash explains. “But we always turn up when we say we’re going to, we’re consistent when lots of other things in their lives that might not be. And we’ve never just stood behind the table. We’re always out in the group, >>
Up to 250 people visit every service, with more arriving over the holidays.

talking to the streeties, eating a meal with them, making sure they know the food is the same food we’d feed our families. It’s about relationships, conversations, community and respect.”
The Kitchen relies on volunteers and donations to feed up to 250 people at each service, a number which soars during holidays.
A core group of 40 volunteers, including students from North Sydney’s Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College, regularly help, with up to 100 others contributing throughout the year.
“We get lots of help from locals, from retirees who drive to pick up supplies, to cafés and businesses who organise food for us,” Tash explains. “Attimo Italian restaurant in Northbridge generously donates food each week. The chef, David, even comes in on his day off to make pizzas for us to take to our service every Tuesday.”
“IT’S ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS, CONVERSATIONS AND COMMUNITY”
When Tash happened to mention in passing that the team were seeing more service users due to the cost of living crisis, David stepped in straight away. “He told us how important it was to him and he doubled the amount he usually gives us,” Tash says.
Attimo Italian is joined by Chargrill Charlie’s in Willoughby, who supply chicken and salads, and Vivienne at Little Giant Roasters café on Willoughby Road who makes delicious salads every Tuesday. Maggio’s in Cammeray and Arthur’s Bavarian Bakehouse in West Pymble also fill boxes with breads and baked goodies.
“We often do a big cook up too,” Tash adds. “We make sure we’ve got food in the freezer that we can defrost and heat up if we’re short.”
Members of the northside community drop meals off to the ladies, as well as other items for those in need.
“Carly’s porch is an institution,” Tash laughs. “Things just appear on it, new toys for kids… food…clothes…you name it. We’re so grateful for all the support we get.”
When a family turned up at a meal service, The Kitchen team put a call out through their network and quickly received toys and clothes

for the kids. They were also able to drop food to the family during the week to make sure the children had something to eat for lunch.
“It’s always special when we can help beyond the kitchen,” Carly continues. “There’s lots of reasons why people might find they need to access our service. People might be homeless because of a marriage breakdown or mental health issues or because they’re escaping domestic violence. And there’s a gap between needing Centrelink and it kicking in. Because we get to know people and their stories, and because the streeties will come and tell us if someone needs help, we’re able to try and get them what they need to get through that tough time.”
As The Alfresco Community Kitchen approaches its fourth year of service, and with the number of Sydneysiders facing hardship only set to increase, the team have their sights set on expanding their impact even further.
“We’re looking at exploring how we can keep doing what we’re doing but go beyond Martin Place,” Tash says.
“We want to find a way to reach the vulnerable people who need help but don’t
necessarily line up on the street,” Carly adds.
“Lanz always used to say, ‘if you see a problem and think someone should do something about it, remember you are someone’,” she continues. “A lot of people are looking for a way to help but they don’t know how or where to start. We’re bringing that opportunity to them. It’s all about community really. Coming together to help those facing hardship.”
For locals wanting to help, the best way to contact The Alfresco Community Kitchen is through their website or social media.
“We need help with dropping off supplies and preparing food,” Tash says. “Reach out and we’ll send you simple recipes and ingredients!”
Always more than just a meal, The Alfresco Community Kitchen nourishes the people it serves with both food and friendship.
“It’s never us and them,” Tash concludes. “At the end of the day, everyone deserves to be treated the same.” l

Former journalist and political advisor Imogen has lived in McMahons Point for seven years
My favourite places in the morning are…I love grabbing a coffee from Piato and a couple of bombolinis from Fiore, both on Blues Point Road, before heading to Balmoral for an ocean swim. Fiore is such a welcome addition to our little village and I appreciate how early Sam, Alberto and the team wake up to make us delicious treats.
If I want to take myself on a date…I’ll grab a new book from Helen at Blues Point Bookshop, hide out in the bar at Loulou and order myself a glass of champagne. For a cocktail, I go to…Piato, where the boys make an excellent spicy margarita, served with oodles of charm. My favourite local walk… involves a meander among the Angophoras at Balls
The best meal I’ve had in the area was at…
Poetica in North Sydney, where they cook on an open re. I love the focaccia, sugarloaf cabbage and whole grilled snapper.
Head, a stroll along the waterfront at Sawmillers Reserve, ending with a few sets of the Lavender Bay stairs – brutal but excellent. My top three favourite local services in the area are… Fiona Lovett at Topaz Health, McMahons Point, who is the best masseuse in the world! Our local posties
Anna and Gavin, who do such a great job. And I value the legends I see collecting containers for Return & Earn – each of them truly helping to reduce waste and make a big difference to our environment.
The secret spot I love is… a perfect little high-tide summer swimming spot that involves a bit of a clamber and will remain a secret!
The thing about living in this area I love the most is…that we’re surrounded by nature. We’re close to the bush, the Harbour, Balmoral Beach and lots more, yet we’re just a couple of minutes from the CBD. How lucky are we!
The words I’d use to describe this area are... don’t tell anyone!
