Principal’s Message Term 4 provides a variety of opportunities for us to celebrate what has been achieved during the past year or several years while also intentionally preparing students for the year ahead. We are grateful we can lean on God during all seasons and have knowledge that He is the same yesterday, today and forever. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 The Year 12 students had their final day celebrations on Tuesday 17th October 2023. The Year 12 Celebration Day commenced with a special breakfast hosted by Mrs Lenna Waters and several helpers. This was a special opportunity for the Year 12 students to commence their final day sharing a meal with the teaching staff at the College. The College community valued the opportunity to pray with our Year 12 class and share gifts to encourage them during their final assembly. At the conclusion of the assembly, the Prep to Year 11 students and staff at the College formed a guard of honour and cheered the Year 12 students as they proceeded from the basketball courts to the main bridge. We are grateful for the many special traditions that we have at Northside that contribute to making this a special day for our College community. We continue to pray for our students as they prepare for their examinations, graduation and post-school pathways.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

The College community enjoyed a great evening of music on Monday 23rd October. The Northside Ensemble Extravaganza event at Encompass Church provided students, staff and families with a chance to enjoy a night of performances from our College concert bands, jazz ensemble, contemporary vocal groups, and more! Many thanks to our students for their efforts performing at this event. Thank you once again to our private instrumental teachers and music teachers for their work supporting our students. Thank you to Mr Andrew Horneman for overseeing this event for our College community. We are so thankful for our music program at Northside. At Northside Christian College, we aim to support all students to successfully transition into our College community and between year levels. A successful transition is characterised by positive educational, wellbeing, and socialemotional adjustment outcomes of students during their transition into our College community. Northside is committed to providing a positive, safe, and supportive experience for all students. Our mission statement states our aim to transform lives through Christ and the wonder of learning. The mission statement highlights our desire to see all students flourish with their learning, wellbeing, their sense of purpose, and belonging. Our heart and hope for all our students is that they can grow here at Northside - in their understanding of God’s character and their understanding of their purpose in life. During Term 4, the College is facilitating a range of transition events including a Year 7 Information Evening, Prep Information Evening, Prep Orientation events, Orientation Day, and the Early Start Program for our VCE students. We are praying that all of our students feel supported in their preparations for 2024.

Mr Michael Bond Principal We look forward to the end of year Celebration events for the Primary and Secondary School at Northside. These compulsory events provide an opportunity for us to gather together as a College community to give thanks to God for His goodness and all that has been achieved during the school year. We look forward to gathering together in December for these events. The Bible reminds us, “I can do everything by the power of Christ. He gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13. I wish to encourage our students to try their best throughout Term 4 and to lean on God for strength. Michael Bond Principal

Important Information Procedures for the Bushfire Season Northside Christian College has developed and regularly reviews the College’s Bushfire Preparedness Policy (Policy No. 18). Bushfire preparedness is not just a concern for schools listed on the Bushfire At−Risk Register. Student transport to and from school, participation in offsite activities (including camps, excursions and sporting activities) and the risk of localised fire events demonstrate the importance of bushfire preparedness for all schools. The College’s Bushfire Preparedness Policy documents procedures designed to ensure that preventative strategies are implemented and to ensure that students and staff are prepared to respond in the event of a bushfire. This response may include pre-emptive planned closures of the College, evacuation or what to do in the event that evacuation is unsafe. The preparation of this plan has been developed in accordance with the Northside Christian College Emergency Management and Critical Incident Plan. We wish to advise that the College may cancel camps or excursions, or may even be required to close the school when Emergency Services declare a Code Red (Catastrophic) fire danger day, or when the risk of bush fire is heightened. Parents will be advised (by SMS and other means) if the College is to close, or if camps or excursions are to be cancelled, with as much forward notice as may be possible.

It is important that all families, particularly those in bush fire prone or high risk areas, have a family fire safety plan. The plan should include information about alternative care arrangements for children in the event that the College is required to close. Families are encouraged to practise the plan and be familiar with procedures to be followed in the case of a bush fire or house fire. Northside Christian College is not listed on the Department of Education’s Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR). Prep Geography Incursion It was such a privilege to have Mr Bob Field share with the Preps about the land we live on as part of our Inquiry unit. Being of First Nations Australian background, Mr Bob Field gave the students an insight into how the First Nations Australians looked after the land of Australia and also how important it is to look after the land our school is on today. From farming to survival, we got to hear some very interesting strategies and methodologies used by the First Nations Australians throughout the generations and also his personal story of the importance of land. We thank Mr Bob Field for taking the time to engage our young students which left them enthusiastic and ready to learn more. Ms Amelin Cheah Primary Teacher

Year 1 and 2 Traditional Clothing

In Chinese class, the Year 1 and 2 students dressed up in traditional clothing from their culture and got to show it to their classmates! They wore all sorts of decorative and colourful clothes from all over the world including dresses, shirts, headbands, fans and many more. Thank you for sharing part of your culture with the class and I look forward to teaching you about traditional Chinese clothes this term. Mr Esa Harri Primary Teacher

Year 3 Burnside Camp From the 9th - 11th October the Year 3s went off to Anglesea and had their very first camping experience. It was a lot of fun and the students were all incredibly wonderful. Even though the first night brought some tears and lots of chatter, we all got through the night successfully.

Over the camp, students were able to participate in strengthening their muscles and determination by climbing a high wall. We developed accuracy when we tried to hit the center using a bow and arrow. We had fun on the flying fox, and found our bearings through orienteering and our balance on the low ropes.

Other things we did were cook damper, eat toasted marshmallows, play at the beach, and have free time on site. We were all so exhausted with all the activities but completely satisfied with our experience. Both myself and Mrs Tuckwell were so proud of our students and are excited to see how much they have grown and how they are all so ready for Year 4 in 2024.

Mrs Sharen Halden Primary Teacher The Year 3’s enjoyed the archery, ropes couses, playing chess, singing by the campfire and the other activities at Burnside. 8

Years 5 CYC Philip Island Camp In the second week of Term 4, the Year 5’s went on a camp to Phillip Island. This was an enjoyable experience. Our first stop was at Tooradin to eat snacks. After that, we stopped at San Remo to eat lunch. We also got to see a specially trained lady feed the pelicans. As she was throwing fish at them, she also told us some interesting information about the pelicans. When we arrived at Phillip island we were greeted by the lovely staff. Soon after we went to the beach and half of us did stand up paddle boarding and the other half played on the beach. That night we watched a movie called ‘Balto’. The next day we went to the beach again and like the day before, one half of us did stand up paddle boarding and the other played games. After that we went back to the camp and participated in some activities, which were the giant swing, flying fox, go karts, and archery. That night we had an excellent talent show, with acting, singing and just other cool things! On the last day we had some free time where we could buy souvenirs. There were some other games there, which we played as well before we left. On the way back we had a last stop in Tooradin to eat our lunch. Then we arrived back to school. It was great to see lots of people facing their fears and going to the highest point on the giant swing, and everyone was competitive but caring. The day after, everyone was very tired. What a lovely but exhausting camp! Pearl & Eric, Year 5

The Year 5’s enjoying time at camp, experiencing many new things.

Middle School Year 9 Students attend Camp SEEK Lana and I attended Camp SEEK during the second week of the Term 3 break. Camp SEEK is a four-day workshop that introduces specifically girls in Years 9 and 10 to a variety of careers in technology-focused fields. During the workshop, participants were split into different groups, and within those groups, collaborated to develop a product in response to a given challenge. This year’s theme was ‘Safe and Sound Online’, and each group developed their final product over three days of brainstorming, conducting user research, and learning how to code and create interactive digital prototypes. Thankfully, we were guided by mentors with valuable support and expertise throughout the workshop. On the fourth and final day, we set up a marketplace where we presented our final product designs to visiting family and friends as well as a number of current SEEK employees. To conclude these presentations, members of each team presented a 3-minute pitch to the gathered audience and answered questions from a panel of judges. To conclude the workshop, awards were announced and the team that Lana and I were a part of received the ‘Failing Forward’ award. This was given to the team that demonstrated resilience and skill in overcoming different challenges encountered throughout the process of designing, developing, and pitching. We’re very fortunate to have received this award and the entailed scholarship for HEX Ed, a six-week online program covering a course of our choice.

Lyvia and Lana spent a week at Camp SEEK. They found it an invaluable experience.

“I highly recommend attending Camp SEEK.”

10

Camp SEEK was a truly worthwhile experience. Personally, I gained invaluable insight into the world of tech. Having heard about current SEEK employees’ experiences throughout the four days of the workshop, I was exposed to the vast pool of potential technology-related careers, some of which were nothing alike. In truth, jobs in the tech industry are extremely diverse, and over the course of just four days, a number of misconceptions I had about this industry were corrected, to say the least. The content was fast-paced, but the environment was not excessively intense. I quite enjoyed myself, and I’d say my highlights were attending the coding workshop and presenting part of my team’s pitch. The food, being both tasty and free, was also sublime. For any girls at Northside wanting to learn more about the tech industry and different careers in tech, I highly recommend attending Camp SEEK. It offers a comfortable learning environment and is also a wonderful opportunity to meet other like-minded girls your age. Check it out!

Lyvia, Year 9

Year 9 Students attend Camp SEEK continued... At SEEK we spent 4 days competing brainstorming, user research, user journey mapping, coding, prototyping and finally marketing for an app that our team developed. The theme we had to base our app on was ‘Keeping safe and sound online’. We prototyped and partially coded an app called ‘Sleepify’, which focuses on reducing screen time to in turn increase sleep. On the last day; we pitched our idea to some executives and about 100-200 other students and parents. We received an award from the judges and received scholarships apparently worth $900+ for a program called HEX that has classes for technology, leadership, money and some other options. Lana, Year 9

Year 9 Real Industry Job Interviews On Tuesday, 24th October, our Year 9 students participated in the Real Industry Job Interviews, a program offered by the Inner Northern Local Learning and Employment Network. Students in Work Studies had spent several of weeks learning where to find jobs advertised, how to compose a cover letter, write their resume, prepare for questions that could be asked in an interview, what to wear, and the importance of body language. The excursion put all this expertise into practice with the students undertaking a mock interview. We had some very nervous students prior to the event, however, all who participated presented very strongly as applicants, with some being given high commendations for their preparation and presentation in the interview. Students felt the opportunity was beneficial in preparing them as they begin their journey into the sphere of employment. Many thanks to Ms Harrington and Ms Skerry who gave their time to assist the students during the excursion. Mr Craig Minty Secondary Teacher

Years 9 & 10 Food Specialist Chocolate Excursion The Year 9/10 Food Specialist class had the opportunity to attend an entrepreneurial/innovation class regarding creation and marketing of their own block of flavoured chocolate. Students were guided through the design process of sampling various bush flavours and then putting together a ‘recipe’ for a truly Australian flavoured block of chocolate by the end of the day. Students were able to create their own packaging, brand name as well as flavour, and spend much time sampling the various flavours such as strawberry gum, lemon myrtle, wattle seed, and others. All reported that they enjoyed the day out, learned lots and would most likely change their recipe significantly if they were able to move beyond the prototype. We thank Whittlesea Tech Centre in Epping for hosting us for the day and providing all ingredients and teaching. Mrs Lenna Waters Secondary Teacher

Year 10 VR Incursion On the 24th October 2023, the Year 10s gathered in the Middle School building for an exciting virtual reality incursion that was delivered by Mindflight7. We immersed ourselves in the world of space, completing an extensive and insightful tour across space. Along the way, we were provided interesting facts in relation to our place in space before heading to our next destination, each time deepening everyone’s understanding and excitement. Once we completed the range of missions, we headed to Mars and watched captivating videos about the five space rovers (Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance). Following this, we had some of our own time to explore the digital platform and selected our own experiences that were designed to match job realities and provide us with career inspiration. As well as a large range of space experiences, there were flight and car simulators, hospitality and games based on the food industry, experiences within marine and nature life and even an interactive surgeon experience, all exposing students to a range of STEM job opportunities. Year 10 students using the VR headsets Mrs Susan Varghese Secondary Teacher

Whether if it’s to explore career pathways or gain inspiration, learn some new facts, or simply have fun, I can 100% recommend the Mindflight7 virtual reality experience to anyone. The extensive range of options, detailed graphics, insightful information and extremely enjoyable morning, made it something no one can say no to!!! Unnamed student, Year 10

12 Hour Write a Book in a Day In Term 3, 29 of our exceptionally talented students across primary and secondary embarked on a marathon adventure, taking part in the “12 Hour Write a Book in a Day” competition. This distinctive competition dared our students to channel their creativity and craft an entire book within the confines of just 12 hours.

Mrs Anthea Field INSPiRE Coordinator

Furthermore, students were required to extend their positive influence beyond their writing stations and to apply the school value of ‘service actively’. Collectively, they’ve raised a commendable $3,320, all of which will be dedicated to the cause of children’s cancer research. Your generous contributions will be pivotal in financing crucial research and essential support services for children in their fight against cancer. In a remarkable display of literary talent, two Year 6 teams have been shortlisted for this prestigious competition – The Girl’s Bookclub and The Nexible Narrators. These students have demonstrated exceptional creativity and dedication, making their mark as standout contenders in the ‘12 Hour Write a Book in a Day’ competition. It’s an achievement that not only brings pride to their peers but also underscores the strength of our school’s commitment to fostering young writers and encouraging them to excel and serve.

Students spent an entire 12 hours in their groups planning, writing, illustrating their books.

Library Update It’s approaching that time of year when we need to start our Yearly Stock Take. If you have any Northside Library books at home or in your classroom ,can you please return them to the Library after the long weekend, as soon as possible. You can return Books by placing them in the Library Tub at Reception or dropping them into the Returns tub just inside the library door. Once most books are returned, we can start scanning the collection and working together to find any missing books. Thank you for your assistance. Rachel Skerry Library Team

Music

Primary and Secondary choirs performance excursion What a fabulous blessing the children were for the residents of the Ian Brand Age Care facility in Bundoora. The musical items were performed and often accompanied by the residents themselves singing and clapping along. A resident named Geoff thanked the choirs at the end which inspired one of the students to bravely speak an impromptu message of thanks on behave of the choirs to all the residents. Not only did the children sing out confidently, at the end of the performance they mingled, laughing with the residents. Mr Harri and Mr Nelson who assisted with the audio-visual and myself as choir coordinator were very moved and proud of the Northside Choirs for their contribution to community care. Ensembles

Extravaganza

This year our annual Ensemble Extravaganza was a great success. It was a wonderful night celebrating our College ensembles. We had over 140 students take part in the event and showcase all the hard work they have been putting in learning their instruments throughout 2023. The event was the most well attended music event we have put on and we thank all our Northside parents for getting involved on the night and coming along to support your children and our music program. Ensembles that performed included our Year 3 strings, Year 6 and 7 Concert bands, opt-in ensembles, Jazz band and also solo performers. It was a big thrill to see students bravely performing and working together to make a glorious sound. We would like to again thank Encompass Church, our Instrumental music team and the Northside leadership team and staff volunteers for supporting this event. We look forward to next year!

Information Technology USB Flash Drive Media

USB flash disk drives have made lives so much easier to store, transfer, and backup data. However, they have also opened up security holes for hackers and thieves to exploit. Here are some best practices for using USB flash media safely.

Tips • •

• •

Do not plug an unknown USB drive into your computer or a work computer. If you are unsure if the drive is yours or someone else’s, do not take a risk, unless you have a computer that is isolated from the network, and you are not worried about damaging it should the drive you plugged into it is infected. Run regular virus scans to ensure it does not contain infected data. Always have a backup of your USB drive in case it fails or becomes infected.

SchoolTV

SPECIAL REPORT: Discussing War & Conflict Children are frequently exposed to distressing news through the 24-hour news cycle and social media. These experiences can provoke anxiety, especially in young minds still forming their worldviews. Parents and caregivers should be mindful of overexposure to such content as it can lead to symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. Children’s responses to trauma can vary, from being strong emotional reactions to being indifferent. It can leave an emotional imprint that can affect a child’s behaviour and perception of danger. Children need reassurance about their safety as they navigate uncertain times. Tailor conversations to your child’s age and emotional maturity. Younger children benefit from simplified explanations focusing on peace, empathy, and cooperation, while older children can delve into historical events, root causes of conflict, and the complexities of international relations. Before discussing these topics with your child, it is also important to assess your own emotions and comfort level. By staying calm and providing physical comfort will help your child regulate their own emotions. In challenging times, compassionate adults play a crucial role in helping children cope with anxiety and providing hope and understanding in our complex world. This Special Report provides guidance on how to tackle this difficult topic and helping children understand there is still hope in our complex world. Please take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please consider seeking medical or professional help. Wellbeing

MAPSS Networking breakfast On the 24th October the Wellbeing Team attended a networking breakfast relating to the Multimodal Approach to Preventing Suicide in Schools (MAPSS) project. This year, our Year 10 students wereinvited to contribute to research in suicide prevention in schools through involvement in this project. Many of our Year 10 students chose to participate in this project which aims to reduce suicide risk and equip students to identify concerns relating to mental health, amongst their peers. The MAPSS project combines three different suicide prevention approaches:

● ● ●

safeTALK educational workshops where qualified facilitators from Lifeline Australia teaches students to recognise and respond to warning signs of suicide in themselves and others. Screening to identify students at risk of suicide and identifying them to the wellbeing department. Reframe IT - an 8 module online cognitive behavioural therapy intervention developed for young people.

Twelve staff across the College were provided with the opportunity to participate in a two day training workshop, to better equip staff to assist students who may need support. Heather Cootee, our Head of Student Wellbeing was invited to participate in a panel and shared the positive experiences and outcomes we have seen at Northside for both students and staff. It was wonderful to hear how positively this program was received and hear testimony from other schools that students ultimately felt equipped with tools on how to support others in the area of suicide prevention. Due to the incredibly positive results, Northside Christian College will be running the MAPSS project for our future Year 10 students in 2024. Current Year 9 families can expect to hear more information from our Wellbeing Team in coming weeks. Ms Chelsea Weeks Student Wellbeing
