Tony’s Take
FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS
Perhaps not since 1962 has the term “fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride” been so appropriate for this country and for Louisiana State sports fans.
The famous line, first uttered by Bette Davis in the 1950 movie ALL ABOUT EVE, was a warning about dark clouds ahead. Combining the recent international moves of our country, its effect on the stock market and oil prices, cost of living, etc, it’s almost too much to bear in the short term when the best LSU sports programs also appear to face a bear year and in one case, a too-soon exit from a possible second national title.
Donald Trump is making moves in his most Trumpian way to erase the sins of our forefathers, or in this case, the past 47 years of Congressional can-kicking in regards to reining in a terrorist regime in a country considered the cradle of civilization and once a close ally of the United States. However, in his usual shy manner, Trump continues to speak down to all but the most uneducated Americans in his grade school vocabulary and snake oil salesman pitches.
Like a kid in a candy store, Trump can’t decide which treat he wants to favor with his unique style of diplomacy. But now the treats are turning into tricks as Russia continues to kill and be killed in a senseless war with Ukraine that’s in its fifth year and Iran, like Ukraine, isn’t going down quietly no matter how Trump phrases his now worn-out street bully dialogue. I wish I had invested in chapstick and body lubricants as members of Congress, not leaders but intrenched spoiled brats, continue to ass-kiss and swing wildly at each other in what has become a plague on our psyche much like social media algorithms.
Me and my portfolio want this military action to end. I can survive in the short haul but millions of hard-working Americans have been screwed royally by the past six administrations, equally by both parties. Republican leadership does not have its ear to the pulse of American concerns and this could easily lead to a return to out of control progressivism in Washington by November.
Trump has done little to help stem the tide of coarseness that permeates America, both with his choice of words and in some cases, his choice of cabinet and department heads. Pete Hegseth, once removed from the bottle, has done a fine job of reorganizing the Defense Department but apparently once Trump renamed it the Department of War, subconsciously it must have affected a president who said he didn’t want any wars. It certainly affected Hegseth, whose demeanor reminds me of the Nixon henchmen from the 1960’s. And all that’s missing from Karoline Leavitt’s wardrobe is the parochial blouse of a virginal teen as she defends Trump with her adolescent posture, expressions and unsophisticated childish manner of speaking.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio continues to hold the rope and Benton’s Mike Johnson has risen above his raisin’ to do a commendable job leading the House of Representatives.
On the sports side, LSU’s women’s basketball team suffered an emotionally painful close loss in the NCAA Sweet 16 against Duke. It was probably a good thing as three teams more disciplined than the Lady Tigers - UCLA, South Carolina and Connecticut - probably would have ended their season at a higher level. But even high level teams lose their mojo. Case in point: Alabama football and this year, LSU baseball. No need to plan a trip to Omaha this June, Tiger fans - LSU has little chance of correcting its many problems in the infield, defensively and with starting pitching consistency to be considered the team they were envisioned in February. The Tigers have gone down faster than the stock market and it will be a while until the LSU pysche recovers. Pray for Lane Kiffen’s spring to be successful and Will Wade’s return to lead to promises for 2026-27, if not for the Promised Land of postseason men’s basketball play. God, it’s going to be a miserable Spring.

PRUNING AND MAINTAINING EVERGREEN SHRUBS.
Ornamental flowering plants tend to dominate discussions on plant selection, but evergreen shrubs play an important role in the overall landscape. Evergreens, or plants that do not drop all their leaves at one time, provide the landscape with a little consistency throughout the year. They will always have a green appearance due to their evergreen habit. Some refer to them as foundational plants because they can help set the backbone of your design. Others use them as screen plants to block views or to create formal hedges outlining paths and walkways throughout the garden.
Pruning is one of those annual applications that gardeners perform to help plants develop better structure and shape. It’s also a way to remove broken and diseased twigs, limbs, and branches.
Sometimes gardeners will selectively remove interior branches from a plant’s canopy to improve light penetration and airflow, both of which can help to mitigate disease issues. Lastly, pruning can be done to reduce height and create a more symmetrical appearance.
Some evergreens like azaleas, camellias, gardenias, Indian hawthorn, viburnum produce showy flowers. Most start blooming in the spring except for camellias. They start blooming in the fall months and those flowers linger into late winter. All these plants should be pruned soon after they finish the flowering process because they start producing flower buds for next season about 6 weeks later. In most cases, folks are pruning to shape them up. Hedge shears can be used, but I find selectively pruning each branch leads to a more natural look.
A lot of gardeners have evergreen hedges and screen plantings. In most situations they utilize evergreen shrubs like boxwood, various hollies, Leyland cypress, Japanese yew, and other similar plants. These plants are primarily grown for their evergreen foliage, so the flowering cycle is not important with regard on exactly when to prune. These plants can be pruned anytime during the growing season. The first of April is a good calendar reminder to begin pruning on these plants because most should be seeing new growth emerging. Prune them as often as needed during the growing season but look to make the last pruning event towards the end of September so that there is enough time for any regrowth to harden off before the dormant season arrives. If you are maintaining a formal evergreen hedge, then consider pruning the upper portion of the canopy a little more than the base of the canopy to create a slight taper. This will allow for better sunlight penetration and maintain a denser plant. A slight taper will not be visible from further away.
When pruning any plant, make sure you are using the proper tools. Maintain these tools over time by regularly cleaning and sharpening. Sharp pruners that make clean cuts cause less stress on the plant and allows the plant to heal properly. For pruning formal hedges, sharp hedge shears offer better cuts than electric hedging tools. However, the number of formal hedges that need to be pruned might influence your tool choice. For cuts that are too large for hand pruners, bypass loppers should be used. If you need to cut something too big for loppers, then reach for a pruning saw. Adding those tools to your gardening toolbox gives you the ability to prune most plants in the landscape.
After pruning, it’s ideal to pick up all the pruning trash and dispose. Any diseased material should be thrown out with the trash, but everything else can be added to the compost pile. To help speed up decomposition, cut up the debris into smaller pieces. Woody stems contain much more carbon so the smaller they are, the easier it is for the microbes to break them down. When it’s all said and done, be sure to take a step back and admire your work. Observe the landscape over the next few weeks as the plants regenerate from your pruning application. Your pruning confidence (and patience) will increase over time as you start to notice how they respond.

Hope you all are doing well and enjoying this crazy Louisiana weather. Did you get a chance to go to a St. Patrick’s Day or IrishItalian Parade? My daughter and I went to the Irish-Italian Parade in Metairie. My granddaughter came home from college to ride in the parade, I had to go. We had such a nice time. It was a beautiful day. The warm Spring days were wonderful and then we were back to cold again! Gotta love Louisiana! I wouldn’t wanna live anywhere else.
Those crazy days gave me the inspiration I needed to work on my Easter Gnome. I love Gnomes, you can never have too many of them. And this Gnome is definitely ready for his Easter Egg Hunt with brightly colored eggs. The hardest and most tedious part of this design was doing all the background/accent work. He even has some chicks anxious to help him have fun! Do you think the carrot is really for him?
By Paula Johnson
His beard did take a little more time to paint as there are three different colors layered on top of each other to give it a multi-colored effect. This little guy was so much fun to paint. Of course once my granddaughter saw it she decided she wanted one. Good thing I have an extra Gnome surface.
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

The return of Will Wade to LSU is more than just a coaching hire—it is a calculated, high-stakes reunion that speaks directly to the identity of LSU athletics and the emotional pulse of its fan base. In Baton Rouge, where passion often outweighs patience, Wade’s comeback represents both redemption and a renewed commitment to winning at all costs.
Wade’s first stint at LSU from 2017 to 2022 was, from a purely basketball perspective, undeniably successful. He compiled a 105–51 record, won an SEC regular-season championship in 2019, and led the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Perhaps more importantly, he restored relevance to a program that had drifted into mediocrity. The PMAC had energy again. Recruiting pipelines were active. LSU basketball mattered.
But that success came with baggage. Wade’s tenure ended abruptly amid NCAA violations tied to recruiting misconduct, culminating in his firing in 2022. For many programs, that would have permanently closed the door. At LSU, however, the equation is different. Winning—and the belief in the ability to win—often carries significant weight.
Fast forward to 2026, and LSU finds itself in a familiar position: a struggling basketball program searching for relevance. Under Matt McMahon, the Tigers failed to gain traction in the SEC, including a disappointing 15–17 season and just three conference wins in 2025–26. Fan engagement waned, and the program lacked identity. LSU didn’t just need a coach—it needed a spark.
Enter Wade.
His return, after a brief but productive stop at NC State and a successful rebuild at McNeese, signals that LSU is prioritizing proven results over past controversy. Wade himself framed the move as deeply personal, calling it “a chance to go home”. That sentiment resonates in Louisiana, where cultural ties and loyalty matter as much as wins and losses.
For the fan base, the reaction is layered but largely positive. There is a segment that remembers the violations and questions the optics of bringing Wade back. However, that group is outweighed by a louder, more energized contingent that views this as the return of a “winner.” LSU fans have seen what Wade can do when given resources—he recruits aggressively, embraces the transfer portal, and plays an entertaining brand of basketball.
More than anything, Wade brings swagger. LSU’s athletic department, as evidenced by recent highprofile moves across sports, is leaning into bold, personality-driven leadership. Wade fits that mold perfectly. He is unapologetic, confident, and fully aligned with the “LSU vs. Everybody” mentality that fans embrace.
There is also a broader cultural impact. Wade’s return re-energizes the LSU basketball ecosystem— boosters, recruits, and fans alike. Early indications suggest strong turnout and enthusiasm surrounding his reintroduction, with expectations of immediate improvement. In today’s college basketball landscape, where roster turnover is constant, Wade’s ability to quickly assemble competitive teams is a major asset.
However, the stakes are undeniably high. This is not just a second chance—it is likely the last one at a program of this caliber. NCAA scrutiny will remain a storyline, and LSU must balance its aggressive pursuit of success with compliance and institutional stability. The margin for error is thinner this time.
Still, LSU is clearly betting that the upside outweighs the risk.
For the fan base, the message is clear: LSU is done rebuilding slowly. The Tigers are aiming to win now, and they are willing to embrace a controversial but proven figure to do it. In a sports culture that values passion, edge, and results, Wade’s return feels less like a gamble and more like a calculated alignment with what LSU has always been.
Ultimately, Will Wade’s return is about identity. It signals that LSU basketball intends to be loud, relevant, and competitive again. And for a fan base that thrives on energy and expectation, that may be all it takes to believe again.

FRINGE TREE
If you’re looking for a native tree or shrub for the landscape, look no further than the fringe tree. The American Fringe Tree, Chi-onanthus virginicus, is a deciduous, small tree or large shrub that reaches twenty feet in height and twelve feet wide. It is often multi-ple-trunked with a rounded shrubby form. Once established, the fringe tree has moderate water needs and tolerates both the heat and humidity well.
Throughout much of the year, you may not even take notice of this small tree but, it is one of the earliest of the blooming trees. The fringe tree gets its name from its fragrant, delicate clusters of white petals that hang gracefully. Fringe trees bloom in spring, with white fringe-like petals that have a slight fragrance. Because flowers appear on barren limbs, they seem to appear out of nowhere.
There are two varieties that can be found in the landscape: the American and the Chinese fringe trees. Both trees are stunning in the landscape and are great small-to-medium-sized trees that fit well in urban settings.
As the name suggests, the Chinese fringe tree, Chionanthus retusus, tree is native to China, Korea and Japan. It is an easy-to-grow, very hardy tree with beautiful, leathery foliage and unique bark in addition to its showy, white flowers. It makes an excellent foundation tree planting or accent feature in the landscape that grows well in full to par-tial sun in most any soil type. The tree’s lush, shiny leaves transform into a golden hue as autumn sets in. Female trees bear blue-purple fruits from late September to October.
The American fringe tree, also called Grancy greybeard or old man’s beard, doesn’t quite match the showiness of its Chinese cousin. Its blossoms are a bit more scat-tered and less consistent compared to the Chinese variety but it makes up for it with its tough nature. It thrives in a variety of soil types and climates making it an excellent choice as a specimen plant in lawns. Whether growing along woodland borders, in urban streetscapes or suburban gardens, the American fringe tree fills its surroundings with grace and beauty.
Both the Chinese and American fringe tree has very few issues. However, under very dry conditions, they can be susceptible to scale insects and borers, including the emerald ash borer, so it’s important to give them extra attention during prolonged periods of drought. While both the American and Chinese fringe trees make excellent landscape specimens, the American fringe tree thrives as a flowering tree in native gardens. Consider planting it in clusters along a border to create a striking visual effect.

Parker is a 3-year-old neutered male who has been patiently waiting for his forever home for nearly 10 months, making him one of the shelter’s longest residents. Despite the long wait, Parker hasn’t lost any of his cheerful spirit.
He absolutely loves playing with other dogs and would likely enjoy a home with a canine companion or regular playtime with dog friends. Parker is also incredibly people-oriented—he’s never met a person he doesn’t like and greets everyone with a happy, friendly attitude.
This sweet boy is ready to trade his kennel for a couch, daily adventures, and a family to call his own. If you’re looking for a loyal, playful, and loving companion, Parker might just be the perfect match.

LASPCA ALL-STAR PETS FOR ADOPTION
A0060225676-Ventro
Meet Ventro, a 7-month-old orange kitten looking for his furever home. Ventro came to us in rough shape- he had what we suspect was road rash all down his back. He’s still working on healing the rest of the way, but he’s ready to finish healing in a new home! However, he is a very active guy who loves to be entertained. He enjoys toys and active play and will absolutely let you know he wants your attention. When he’s overstimulated, he does sometimes give love nibbles, but he’s a sweet, fun guy who just wants a chance to be his goofy, rambunctious self. To meet Ventro or any of the other wonderful pets at the Louisiana SPCA, visit 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd., from 10 AM-5 PM, Wednesday-Saturday, or call (504) 368-5191. She can’t wait to meet her future paw-rents.
A0041373340-Kit Kat
Meet Kit Kat, an 8-year-old cat looking for his fur-ever home. This handsome boy is a bit of a lone ranger, preferring his own company over the hustle and bustle of other cats. He may be shy at first, but with a little time, his friendly side begins to shine. He loves finding cozy spots to relax and watch the world go by, making him a great companion for someone who appreciates a calm and peaceful presence. If you’re looking for a cat who respects your space while quietly offering affection, he could be the perfect match. To meet Kit Kat or any of the other wonderful pets at the Louisiana SPCA, visit 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd., from 10 AM-5 PM, WednesdaySaturday, or call (504) 368-5191. He can’t wait to meet his future paw-rents.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
It’s that time of the year when litters of kittens are turning up all over while many adult cats continue to wait to be adopted. People are asking us for help with litters they have found while adult cats patiently wait for a chance to get a home. Kittens are usually adopted much faster than adult cats, but we are fortunate that many people prefer cats that are not as active as kittens are. And we have a special place in our heart for those who love senior cats and want to give them a home. We believe there is a wonderful home waiting for each one of our rescues and we enjoy finding the right home for each one of them.
