ACTION? JACKSON GONE; MEH!
The passing of Jesse Jackson last week might have caused a handful of people to speak as one of the last of the 60’s civil rights activists barely left a visible mark on Black America.
Not quite Martin Luther King, Jackson was adept at things that were not appropriate on most tombstones. The quintessential backup man, Jackson was the kind of guy who picked a fight, then offered to hold the coat of the man who would actually do the fighting. A proponent of “I’ve got your back!”, Jackson certainly did; after all, that’s where most wallets resided in his heyday. The man who could find shelter or an excuse when the chips were down had the moral compass of a centipede. The term “gut check” was foreign to him.
No one wanted for good Southern fried chicken and fixin’s when King, Andrew Young and hundreds of other courageous Blacks and whites marched on Selma, Alabama so many decades ago. Like green currency, Jackson could find the local eatery and stock up for his fellow marchers as they recovered from high pressure water hoses, vicious dogs and angry Southerners. Jackson believed in integration,; mix your money with mine and I’ll take care of it. People with even less backbone than Jackson would succumb to his charms (actually his barely veiled attempts at blackmail).
Jackson faded from public view the past ten years as the Black movement changed and his old school scams fell out of favor. It would have been a blessing for Jackson to have a vocation to fall back on with his homemade Reverend title. Instead, the pool of the inept changed and he didn’t.
A request of have Jackson’s body lie in state suppressed many a laugh and was quickly dismissed. If the country had already passed on one less controversial but beloved Jackson to lie in state, there was no way Jesse would.
A more fitting memorial could be used: Jesse James now has a fitting fellow citizen with his first namesake. But Jesse was skilled at robbing a train and a legend grew. What legacy will grow from Jesse Jackson?

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water, sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops & looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent.
His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together… Author unknown…
What can I do now to prepare for the unexpected for my pets or my older family members?
In the confusion that accompanies a person’s unexpected illness, accident, or death, pets may be overlooked. In some cases, pets are discovered in the person’s home days after the tragedy. To prevent this from happening to your pet, take these simple precautions: Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary emergency caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you. Provide them with keys to your home; feeding and care instructions; the name of your veterinarian; and information about the permanent care provisions you have made for your pet. Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. Emergency caregivers should also know how to contact each other.

SPRING VEGETABLE GARDENING SEASON IS UPON US
Vegetable gardeners throughout the region are preparing for the spring summer growing season. At the LSU AgCenter, we recommend planting spring vegetable plants around March 15 for southern Louisiana gardens (April 1 for our northern counterparts). The chance of frost is greatly reduced after March 15. However, that doesn’t mean that it never happens. Check local weather reports and extended forecasts for information on late season frosts. Ultimately, planting early is essential for natural and organic production systems. Be ready to cover tender transplants in case a late spring frost decides to come out way.
Access to direct contact sunlight is a must for all vegetable garden plants. These plants need sunlight to drive photosynthesis and create much needed energy so that they are productive and provide good yields. Surface and internal drainage are also important for optimum vegetable production. Puddles that remain for days after an extended rain event are an indicator of poor drainage. Avoid sites with poor drainage or start doing things to improve drainage such as utilizing drainage swales, strategically placed trenches, or increasing the grade by adding soil. The last thing to consider when finding a location for the vegetable garden is to have it close by. Gardens placed at the back of the lot will often get overlooked and forgotten. Keep the garden close to the action so that it’s easy to do garden tasks. Satisfy these three requirements and watch your garden become more productive as you gain more experience growing food at home.
Now is the time to prepare your warm season vegetable garden. Some of the typical crops include bell peppers, cantaloupes, cucumbers, eggplants, hot peppers, southern peas, specialty peppers, summer squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, watermelon, and zucchini. For more information on vegetable gardening, planting dates, and recommended varieties check out the Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide, Pub. 1980 from www.LSUAgCenter.com/.

Plants receive nutrition through root uptake of elements and minerals from the surrounding soil. Existing in-ground gardens should be soil tested early in the year to determine current soil pH and nutrient levels. The ideal situation for all in-ground vegetable gardens is to have “High” and “Very High” levels of each nutrient listed on the soil test report. The concept behind a basic fertilizer program is to provide nutrients that are found to be deficient. Both conventional and organic sources are available for each of the common nutrients needed by plants for normal growth and development. If no soil test report is available, then we recommend using a complete fertilizer product, one that has a value for nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Look for the fertilizer analysis portion of the fertilizer label to determine whether you have a complete fertilizer.
Containerized vegetable gardens are treated a little differently. Potting soils and bulk garden soils are somewhat different than native topsoil found in the yard. Native topsoil (real soil) is made from the weathering of parent material and bedrock. This provides certain nutrients depending on where the soil originated. In potting soils and bulk garden soils, a mixture of various organic components that are mixed together so that they have similar physical characteristics of soil. Some products like Miracle-Gro Garden Soil include a fertilizer in the mix. Read the product labels to determine if this is the case. Use a complete fertilizer at the labeled rate for potting soils with no initial fertilizer input.
Weeds drive a lot of gardeners mad. Plan a weed control program during the initial planning of the vegetable garden. The first layer of weed control starts with the proper spacing of plants in the garden. Second layer of control should be addressed using a mulch to cover bare ground. Scouting the garden every few days and physically removing weeds as they appear is a third layer of control. Lastly, herbicide options are available. Pre-emergent herbicides are applied to control weeds as they germinate. Post-emergent herbicides are used to control weeds that are currently growing. You will find selective post-emergent products that can be sprayed over-the-top of vegetable plants to control certain types of weeds. Organic options are available as well. Make to read and follow the product label before applying any type of herbicide.

By Paula Johnson
Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com
Sorry about not being able to get that other Valentine project ready for you. But I was a bit under the weather. Well.....I was totally out of pocket for a while. I am not 100% yet but I am feeling somewhat better.
Since St. Patrick’s Day is so close, I decided to paint a St. Patrick’s Day piece. This is painted on a 6 X 6 cradle board which you can stand on alone on a shelf or table or hang on the wall. I first base coated the board white. When the paint was dry I slip slapped three different colors of paint in various places with the same “dirty” brush. I then added the letters and shamrocks. I base coated the letters with sage green. When dry I painted the bottom of the letters with Dark Hauser Green and the top with Leaf Green. Did some shading on the letters and dip dots. The shamrocks were painted leaf green and shaded dark hauser green. Shaded the outside edge with the dark green.
Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

When Team USA stood atop the podium and the gold medal was placed around their necks, it was more than a championship moment—it
was a release. For the first time since 1980, the United States had climbed all the way back to Olympic gold, ending a drought that had lingered for nearly half a century. In doing so, this team didn’t just win a tournament; it reignited a national feeling that has long defined America at its best: belief.
The shadow of the 1980 Winter Olympics loomed over every American hockey generation that followed. The “Miracle on Ice” wasn’t merely an upset—it became a cultural touchstone, a reminder that grit, unity, and fearless confidence could topple even the most imposing powers. But history, for all its romance, can also become a weight. For decades, American teams chased that standard, often falling just short, always measured against ghosts in red, white, and blue.
This gold medal finally lifted that burden.
What makes this victory resonate so deeply is not just the outcome, but the era in which it arrived. The modern sports landscape is globalized, professionalized, and ruthlessly competitive. Nations invest heavily, pipelines are refined, and margins for error are razor thin. To emerge from that environment as Olympic champions speaks to more than talent—it speaks to culture. It speaks to development, to patience, and to a collective refusal to accept that “almost” is good enough.
At its core, this gold medal is a story about resilience. American hockey has evolved dramatically since 1980. Youth programs expanded, college hockey strengthened, and international experience became the norm rather than the exception. The win is validation that the long game matters. Progress isn’t always linear, and breakthroughs often arrive after years of quiet, unglamorous work. That message extends well beyond the rink.
For the American public, the moment landed with emotional force. In a country often divided by politics, economics, and culture, sports still provide rare moments of shared joy. Watching the flag rise and hearing the anthem in an Olympic arena cuts through noise. It reminds people—if only briefly—that unity is possible. That pride doesn’t require uniformity; it requires purpose.
There is also symbolism in when this happened. Generations who grew up hearing about 1980 from parents and grandparents finally have their own defining moment. This gold belongs to them. It’s proof that history can be honored without being replicated, that greatness doesn’t have to look the same to matter just as much.
From an international perspective, the victory signals that the United States is no longer chasing legitimacy in the sport—it has reclaimed authority. Winning gold resets expectations. It changes how opponents prepare, how young athletes dream, and how the program is perceived worldwide. Success breeds belief, and belief breeds the next wave of competitors who now know, undeniably, that the summit is reachable.
But perhaps the most powerful meaning of this gold medal lies in its simplicity. It tells a story Americans instinctively understand: a team counted on but not crowned, carrying history without being defined by it, finally breaking through. That narrative—hard work rewarded, patience justified, faith fulfilled—is deeply American.
In 1980, gold symbolized a miracle. In 2026, it symbolizes continuity. The ideals that carried a group of college kids to glory decades ago still matter. They’ve just been reborn in a new generation, under brighter lights, against deeper competition.
Gold has returned to the United States. And with it, a reminder that the American spirit—unyielding, hopeful, and unafraid of long odds—never truly left.

AJUGA
Ajuga (Ajuga reptans), also known as carpet bugle, bugleweed, or carpet bugleweed, is a low-growing, perenni-al, evergreen groundcover that produces six-inch-tall spikes of small blue flowers that are produced in spring to early summer and are especially attractive when plants are massed together.
This low-growing groundcover produces a layer of dark green to bronze- or purple-colored leaves in a flat ro-sette, spreading fairly quickly by runners or stolons. The low-growing habit and small leaves of the bugleweed cover the ground in a thick, lush layer of green, perfect for filling in among other plants in the landscape. There are se-lections with foliage variegated in green, white, red, yellow, and pink.
The mass of green works well with different flower colors, but bright and light colors will show the best compared to the dark green and purple-colored foliage. Sim-ple small or medium size flowers will contrast with the tiny foliage without adding too much detail. Colors in the variegated foliage varieties are primarily warm colors, con-trasting flowers would include blues and purples or a simple color palette can be used by repeating the same warm colors with yellow, pink, or red flowers in companion plants.
Available cultivars include: ‘Multicoloris,’ leaves mottled red, white, and yel-low on green; ‘Alba,’ white flowers; ‘Atropurpurea,’ bronze foliage and blue flowers; ‘Burgundy Glow,’ new leaves bright burgundy-red, mature leaves cream/ white and dark pink; ‘Rubra,’ rose flowers, more vigorous; ‘Variegata,’ grey-green leaves with cream markings.
Ajuga should be planted on 6- to 12-inch centers in welldrained soil for quick establishment. It has moderate drought tolerance and prefers part shade/part sun but does well in the shade.
Ajuga is native to Asia, Africa, and Europe. It isn’t always recommended in the landscape because it can be in-vasive. But, if you find that location where a grass– or vine-type groundcover isn’t what you want, give Ajuga a try.
Do your part to reduce the number of homeless animals.

Tony’s Take 2026 SCHEDULE,
OPPONENTS FAVOR TIGERS TO WIN SEC BASEBALL TITLE
LSU’S most balanced baseball team in the Jay Johnson era is playing a schedule with only one exception may be the most favorable in the league this season.
The Tigers play their most dangerous rival in late April as they take on the preseason 4th ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville. They play the former coach Tony Vitello-less Tennessee Vols in Knoxville in early April for one of their two real road challenge against a team preseason ranked 14th with two losses before the beginning of March and where weather might be an issue. They do not play Texas, the 3rd ranked team nationally and Vanderbilt, who they play in March, has also lost two games before March. Georgia and Ole Miss are the other road trips for LSU and neither team is a major threat in 2026.
At home, no games against nationally ranked teams #7 Arkansas or #9 Auburn or an unranked Alabama squad, all former Western Division threats to upset the Tigers’ baseball applecart. The biggest threat at home are the Florida Gators, ranked 13th, their last SEC opponent before the SEC tournament.
After Vandy, the Tigers’ league leadoff opponent in Nashville, they play nine straight games at home. In fact, they had only one other road game this month, against UL Lafayette Wednesday this week. The full schedule is online. LSU plays, in order, at home: Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas A&M, South Carolina and Florida. On the road: Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Georgia. LSU’s away schedule is more formidable than its home slate, especially early. This could be a record year for the Tigers, looking at wins and losses, if they take the series against their two Tennessee state rivals in March and early April. In any case, its a celebration in Knoxville with the departure of Vitello, who is obnoxious at best and weird as well. Good luck to the San Francisco Giants, his new home. I’ll bet he won’t last the season even in a city known for weirdness. -0-

MEET LEMONADE: A PUP LIFTED BY LOVE AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Every day, animals in our community depend on the compassion and generosity of those around them. Some come from loving homes but face challenges in receiving the essential care they deserve, while others wait in shelters, hoping for a second chance at happiness. These animals remind us that even the smallest gestures, such as offering a leash, a nourishing meal, or a veterinary checkup, can transform a life. Each act of support brings them closer to a healthier and brighter future.
In our own community, one furry friend in need was Lemonade, a two-year-old Great Pyrenees–Labrador Retriever mix owned by an unhoused couple staying at the City of New Orleans Shelter and Engagement Center, operated by Odyssey House. Full of energy, curiosity, and joy, Lemonade eagerly greeted everyone he met and explored every corner of his space. Deeply loved by his owners, their concern grew when he began to rapidly lose weight. They reached out to the Shelter and Engagement Center’s staff for help and guidance, who in turn contacted the Louisiana SPCA for assistance.
The Louisiana SPCA team spoke with the shelter staff to learn more about Lemonade and made plans to meet him. After an initial check at the shelter, Lemonade was brought to their Community Clinic for a full wellness exam. While speaking with his owners, the team learned he was due for vaccinations and advised them on the importance of keeping up with vaccines and preventatives like flea and heartworm medicine to maintain his health. The owners agreed, and Lemonade was brought to the clinic for care. While on the ride to the shelter’s clinic, Lemonade proved to be the perfect car ride companion, excited for the adventure ahead. When he arrived, he greeted the staff with kindness and plenty of happy kisses, clearly thrilled to meet everyone. During his wellness check, the team examined him thoroughly and checked his weight. Overall, he was in good health and able to receive those core vaccinations, including rabies and distemper boosters, to help keep him protected and thriving. With helpful guidance from the veterinarian and some additional resources, including a bag of pet food and a new kennel, Lemonade was returned to his owners with a brighter outlook.
Through community support, the Louisiana SPCA can provide kennels, harnesses, leashes, pet food, and no-cost veterinary care to pets in need. Stories like Lemonade’s show just how much of a difference compassion and community involvement can make. Supporting your local animal shelter of choice, like the Louisiana SPCA, is a powerful way to provide a helping hand to animals in need within your community.
Even during challenging times, the love and support of our community keep this work alive. You can make a real difference for animals in need by supporting organizations like the Louisiana SPCA. Whether you give one-time or monthly donations, sponsor medical care or daily essentials, volunteer your time, or open your home through fostering, every act of kindness helps pets like Lemonade thrive.
