There has been an increase in vehicle burglaries in our neighborhoods, shopping center and restaurant parking lots. Some are unlocked doors, as they walk down the street and check the door handles, but some thieves have been more brazen and some bust windows. Every car they break into have valuables in plain view! Example: purse, wallet, cell phone, cash, iPad, laptop, etc. Slidell Police Department are urging people to please help by: locking your doors, hiding your valuables from plain view, and by being vigilant. If you see anything suspicious, please do not hesitate to call 911! • WARNING • WARNING •

Tony’s Take
In recent years, I have devoted many Tony’s Takes to the need for our fellow citizens to become closer, more involved, spend time with each other. In this time of discord, the majority of Americans have opted out trying to have any sort of meaningful discussion unless the other party or parties are well-known to them Add this disconnect with the isolation of cellphones and social media and its amazing anything gets discussed without a rigid structure to require participation.
Last week, David Erspamer, the CEO of the Pelican Institute, an affable looking man, wrote an op-ed piece about talking among ourselves where points of view create disagreement. Looking back at our Founding Fathers, David wrote that “the Founders argued fiercely about the scope of federal power, the morality of slavery, the nature of representation and the role of religion in public life.” Although these men had deep disagreements amongst themselves, “they forged something unprecedented in human history; a constitutional republic built to endure..”
The most important statement from David came next: “The difference between then and now is not that they disagreed less. It’s that they disagreed better.’
To paraphrase the writer; “civil discourse is not weakness. It is the recognition that we are all, ultimately, in this together and that the only sustainable path through hard disagreement is one paved with mutual respect.”
Respect. Aretha Franklin sang about it in one of the four or five greatest pop songs of our times. Blacks seem to understand it better among themselves because so little was given them before Vietnam. “Don’t dis me!” and “giving your propers” were key elements in not only Blacks increasing understanding among themselves but having it spread into the non-Black populous doing the turbulent 60’s and 70’s. But the growth and awareness of respect has turned ugly as we dive into our more and more impersonal and electronically dictated society. Self-respect has dwindled incredibly and with it the disintegration of polite language, dress and attitude. Or threats of legal actions fueled by a community of trial lawyers, disinterested judges and handicapped police and community leaders.
I’m sugar-coating it. David said “we live in an era of algorithmically amplified outrage and a political culture that rewards the provocateur and punishes the nuanced. Political identity has metastasized into something closer to tribal warfare, where the goal is not to persuadebut to humiliate. Cable news has turned disagreement into sport and in that environment, the ancient civic art of actually listening to and understanding someone with whom you disagree has become almost countercultural.”
Fortunately for most of us living in the Deep South, deep rooted Southern culture still trumps these trends. David says most Americans in their day-today lives can still disagree with their neighbors, their co-workers and their relatives and they still manage to be decent to one another. In this form, civil discourse is at its most profound best: when you are willing to hold your convictions firnly while remaining open to the possibility that you might be wrong or that others might have seen something you haven’t.
We celebrate discipline in sports where the unchecked are ultimately shown the sidelines. We should be able to do this in other areas of our lives. It is time for coarseness to be reined in both verbally and physically. Today’s language from so-called adult leaders sounds more like playground aggression among teenage boys from a generation or two in the past. We won’t continue to advance as a nation much longer with this mantra. On our 250th birthday, America needs to give itself a masssive dose of civility and understanding. If not, don’t look for our 300th.

PRUNING AND MAINTAINING EVERGREEN SHRUBS.
Ornamental flowering plants tend to dominate discussions on plant selection, but evergreen shrubs play an important role in the overall landscape. Evergreens, or plants that do not drop all their leaves at one time, provide the landscape with a little consistency throughout the year. They will always have a green appearance due to their evergreen habit. Some refer to them as foundational plants because they can help set the backbone of your design. Others use them as screen plants to block views or to create formal hedges outlining paths and walkways throughout the garden.
Pruning is one of those annual applications that gardeners perform to help plants develop better structure and shape. It’s also a way to remove broken and diseased twigs, limbs, and branches.
Sometimes gardeners will selectively remove interior branches from a plant’s canopy to improve light penetration and airflow, both of which can help to mitigate disease issues. Lastly, pruning can be done to reduce height and create a more symmetrical appearance.
Some evergreens like azaleas, camellias, gardenias, Indian hawthorn, viburnum produce showy flowers. Most start blooming in the spring except for camellias. They start blooming in the fall months and those flowers linger into late winter. All these plants should be pruned soon after they finish the flowering process because they start producing flower buds for next season about 6 weeks later. In most cases, folks are pruning to shape them up. Hedge shears can be used, but I find selectively pruning each branch leads to a more natural look.
A lot of gardeners have evergreen hedges and screen plantings. In most situations they utilize evergreen shrubs like boxwood, various hollies, Leyland cypress, Japanese yew, and other similar plants. These plants are primarily grown for their evergreen foliage, so the flowering cycle is not important with regard on exactly when to prune. These plants can be pruned anytime during the growing season. The first of April is a good calendar reminder to begin pruning on these plants because most should be seeing new growth emerging. Prune them as often as needed during the growing season but look to make the last pruning event towards the end of September so that there is enough time for any regrowth to harden off before the dormant season arrives. If you are maintaining a formal evergreen hedge, then consider pruning the upper portion of the canopy a little more than the base of the canopy to create a slight taper. This will allow for better sunlight penetration and maintain a denser plant. A slight taper will not be visible from further away.
When pruning any plant, make sure you are using the proper tools. Maintain these tools over time by regularly cleaning and sharpening. Sharp pruners that make clean cuts cause less stress on the plant and allows the plant to heal properly. For pruning formal hedges, sharp hedge shears offer better cuts than electric hedging tools. However, the number of formal hedges that need to be pruned might influence your tool choice. For cuts that are too large for hand pruners, bypass loppers should be used. If you need to cut something too big for loppers, then reach for a pruning saw. Adding those tools to your gardening toolbox gives you the ability to prune most plants in the landscape.
After pruning, it’s ideal to pick up all the pruning trash and dispose. Any diseased material should be thrown out with the trash, but everything else can be added to the compost pile. To help speed up decomposition, cut up the debris into smaller pieces. Woody stems contain much more carbon so the smaller they are, the easier it is for the microbes to break them down. When it’s all said and done, be sure to take a step back and admire your work. Observe the landscape over the next few weeks as the plants regenerate from your pruning application. Your pruning confidence (and patience) will increase over time as you start to notice how they respond.

Hi, Everyone! email me!
Hope you are enjoying the warmer temperatures we have been having. I have opened the windows at my house and let the fresh air in. It really felt nice when the temperatures were in the 60’s. I can hardly believe we are already in the middle of March. Time is flying by.
By Paula Johnson
I tried something different this time. I am not sure what to exactly call it. Dry brushing, shading, highlighting? Basically a combination of all. Your guess is as good as mine. But, I am not one to turn down a challenge.I am not happy with this piece at all. But, it was something I had never tried before and I wanted to give it a shot. It was fun, I enjoyed the class. I did learn some neat tips and tricks! But, I am not happy with my work. Will I do something like this again? I would have to practice a whole lot and get a 1000% better before I would show it to anyone. The technique is not as easy as I thought it would be. I promise I will have something really cute for my next Easter project. So now I have shared my not so good project. I am going to work on the other one now.
So what will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But I know it will be fun!
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

For decades, the backbone of the LSU Tigers baseball dynasty came straight from Louisiana high school fields. Long before national recruiting became a year-round arms race and the transfer portal reshaped college rosters, LSU built championship teams by locking down the best players in its own backyard. The blueprint was simple: Louisiana produces elite baseball talent, and the state’s top players often grow up dreaming of playing at Alex Box Stadium.
In recent years, LSU’s recruiting strategy has broadened significantly. National prospects and transfer portal additions now play a major role in roster construction. While those avenues are important in modern college baseball, LSU would benefit greatly from returning to a philosophy that prioritizes Louisiana high school talent as the program’s foundation.
Louisiana has long been one of the most productive baseball states in America relative to its population. From powerhouse programs in Baton Rouge and Lafayette to small-town schools across the bayou, the state consistently produces high-level prospects. These athletes grow up immersed in baseball culture, playing nearly year-round in competitive environments that prepare them well for the SEC.
Historically, LSU’s greatest teams were built around those players. Legendary head coach Skip Bertman turned LSU into a national powerhouse during the 1990s largely by dominating in-state recruiting. His championship teams were filled with Louisiana stars who grew up understanding the significance of LSU baseball.
One of the most iconic examples is Ben McDonald from Denham Springs. McDonald became one of the most dominant pitchers in LSU history, winning the Golden Spikes Award and helping cement LSU as a national powerhouse before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft.
Another Louisiana legend is Todd Walker from Bossier City. Walker was the leader of LSU’s 1993 national championship team and one of the most decorated players in program history. His clutch hitting and leadership helped establish the winning culture that still defines LSU baseball today.
The same pattern continued throughout LSU’s championship years. Players like Eddy Furniss from Eunice became college baseball icons. Furniss smashed LSU records and played a key role in the Tigers’ 1997 national championship run, becoming one of the most feared hitters in college baseball.
Another Louisiana product who made a massive impact was Aaron Hill from Monroe. Hill became a cornerstone of LSU’s 2000 national championship team before moving on to a long and successful Major League career.
More recent LSU stars also reflect the importance of in-state recruiting. Alex Bregman may be known nationally for his MLB success, but the Albuquerque native developed deep LSU ties and thrived in Baton Rouge because he embraced the culture of the program. However, Louisiana natives such as Jared Mitchell from New Iberia and Mason Katz from Metairie embodied what LSU baseball has traditionally been about—homegrown stars leading championship runs.
Mitchell, a two-sport standout and Louisiana native, helped power LSU to the 2009 national championship with elite speed and defense. Katz became one of the most beloved players in program history thanks to his clutch hitting and leadership during LSU’s return to national prominence in the early 2010s.
These players weren’t just talented—they had an emotional connection to LSU. Many grew up attending games at Alex Box Stadium, dreaming of wearing the purple and gold. That pride translated into leadership and long-term commitment to the program.
When LSU prioritizes Louisiana recruiting, it also protects its natural territory. If LSU doesn’t aggressively pursue the state’s top players, other programs will. SEC rivals and national powers frequently recruit Louisiana because they know the level of talent is elite. Every time a Louisiana star leaves the state, LSU risks strengthening a future opponent.
Fan engagement also grows when local players become stars. Louisiana fans love seeing hometown athletes succeed in Baton Rouge. Whether it’s a pitcher from a small bayou town or a slugger from the New Orleans metro area, those players create deeper emotional connections with the fan base.
None of this suggests LSU should abandon national recruiting or the transfer portal. In today’s college baseball landscape, successful programs must utilize every available avenue to build competitive rosters. However, LSU’s greatest advantage has always been its ability to dominate its home state.
By once again prioritizing Louisiana high school recruiting, LSU can rebuild the type of roster identity that powered its golden era. When elite Louisiana talent forms the core of the team—supported by selective national additions—the Tigers become far more than just another college baseball program.
They become Louisiana’s team, built by Louisiana players, chasing championships in front of the roaring crowds at Alex Box Stadium. And historically, that formula has been one of the most successful in the history of college baseball.

PLANTING IRISH POTATOES
Most homegrown Irish potatoes are planted in spring, largely because quality seed potatoes are difficult to find for fall planting. Potatoes are somewhat unique among vegetables in that they perform well in mildly acidic soils. In fact, a soil pH below 6.0 is beneficial because it helps suppress potato scab, a common disease.
Before planting, prepare your garden by forming raised rows or high beds to ensure good drainage. Seed potatoes may be small whole tubers or pieces cut from larger ones. Always use certified seed potatoes that are firm and healthy, with no shriveling or dark discoloration inside when cut. Avoid using leftover potatoes from last year’s crop, as they may harbor diseases that reduce yields. Grocery store potatoes should also be avoided since they may be treated to prevent sprouting and may not be adapted to local growing conditions.
Large seed potatoes should be cut into pieces weighing about 1½ to 2 ounces, each containing at least one eye. Pieces that are too small tend to produce weak plants, while overly large pieces waste planting material. Cut seed potatoes several days before planting and allow them to cure at room temperature in a single layer. This healing process dries the cut surfaces and reduces the risk of seed piece rot after planting. Plan on using about 1 pound of seed potatoes for every 10 feet of row, or 10 pounds for 100 feet. Space seed pieces 10 to 12 inches apart and cover them with 3 to 4 inches of soil.
Spring-planted potatoes usually bloom, and some flowers may form small green fruits that resemble cherry tomatoes. These fruits, along with green areas on potato skins and sprouted eyes, contain a toxic compound and should never be eaten. To prevent greening, keep developing tubers well covered with soil during the growing season and store harvested potatoes in darkness.
Some gardeners choose to grow potatoes using straw mulch. This method produces clean tubers and makes harvesting easy. Plant seed pieces under about 1 inch of soil, and once sprouts emerge, surround plants with 4 to 5 inches of straw. Maintain a thick, slightly moist mulch layer throughout the season. When the vines die back, potatoes can be harvested simply by pulling away the straw.
Common problems with Irish potatoes include seed piece rot caused by planting in heavy, wet soils; enlarged lenticels and tuber rot resulting from excessive moisture near harvest; early blight; and insect pests such as Colorado potato beetles and aphids.

Parker is a 3-year-old neutered male who has been patiently waiting for his forever home for nearly 10 months, making him one of the shelter’s longest residents. Despite the long wait, Parker hasn’t lost any of his cheerful spirit.
He absolutely loves playing with other dogs and would likely enjoy a home with a canine companion or regular playtime with dog friends. Parker is also incredibly people-oriented—he’s never met a person he doesn’t like and greets everyone with a happy, friendly attitude.
This sweet boy is ready to trade his kennel for a couch, daily adventures, and a family to call his own. If you’re looking for a loyal, playful, and loving companion, Parker might just be the perfect match.

SPRING BREAK AND PETS: HOW TO KEEP YOUR FURRY FRIENDS SAFE AND HAPPY
Spring break often brings travel plans, houseguests, and changes in routine for many families. While this season can be thrilling for many, it may induce stress and uncertainty for pets that depend on a consistent daily schedule. Dogs and cats typically flourish with regular feeding times, known environments, and consistent engagement with their owners. When these routines are disrupted unexpectedly, pets might face anxiety or changes in behavior. Preparing in advance can help guarantee that animals stay safe, at ease, and well looked after during hectic travel times.
One of the first steps pet owners should take before traveling is confirming your pet’s identification information is current. Spring travel increases the chance of pets escaping unfamiliar spaces or slipping out during busy moments at home. Updated ID tags and accurate microchip registration can greatly improve the chances of a lost pet being reunited with its owner. Even pets that rarely leave the house can become disoriented if they find themselves in an unfamiliar place. A quick check of contact information before a trip can provide an extra layer of security.
Pet owners who are leaving their animals at home during spring break have several care options to consider. Boarding facilities provide supervision, structured routines, and opportunities for socialization with other animals. This can be a good fit for highly social pets that enjoy activity and interaction throughout the day. Other animals may feel more comfortable staying in their home environment with a trusted pet sitter. Remaining in familiar surroundings can help reduce anxiety and maintain a sense of stability.
For families who plan to bring their pets along for the trip, preparation can help reduce travel stress. Experts recommend packing familiar items such as a favorite toy, blanket, or bedding. These items carry familiar scents that can help pets feel more relaxed in new environments. Maintaining regular feeding times and daily walks can also help animals adjust to the change in location. Small efforts to preserve routine can make travel a smoother experience for both pets and their owners.
Regardless of the option selected by pet owners, maintaining clear communication with caregivers is crucial. Written guidelines must detail feeding routines, medication schedules, behavioral observations, and any specific requirements. It’s important to keep veterinary contact details in a readily accessible location. Professionals also suggest designating a reliable emergency contact who can make decisions when necessary.
