WHIFF OF KIFF: SORTING OUT THE PORTAL PLAYERS

It took LSU’s new football coach several weeks for his portal magic to reveal itself as impatient fans like me chaffed while the outbound transfers far outnumbered the inbound in sheer numbers and talent.

However, once Mardi Gras season began, it was evident that Lane Kiffen had ‘em lined up in all the Lanes LSU needed for 2026. A better portal recruiter than the departed Kelly, no slouch himself, Kiffen found the raw and not so raw talent which was willing to head to Red Stick for fortune and fame, in different amounts.

It began with a group of wide receivers who won’t make LSU fans easily forget the five or six NFL wideouts from the Ed Orgeron and Brian Kelly eras, such as Justin Jefferson, La’Marr Chase and Malik Nabers, but many of them have the length and speed to reawaken memories of recent explosive offenses prior to 2024 and last year. And the majority averaged 14 yards or more per catch. Drool on, brother!

Guys like Kansas State’s Jayce Brown, Jackson Harris, Roman Mothershed from Troy and Illinois’s Malik Elzy are all over six feet and are joined by recent transfer Winston Watkins, a sophomore from Ole Miss and four other wideouts. They join Phillip Wright, a redshirt freshman, whose the only holdover from the Kelly era and with the new talent pool might have a tough time getting on the field. With three incoming freshmen, that’s a baker’s dozen receivers for the new quarterbacks. Speaking of bakers, we’ll get to defensive coordinator Blake Baker in a minute.

But first, the signal callers. After a hugely disappointing 2025 with overrated and oft-injured starter Garrett Nussmeier, uninspiring Michael Van Buren and Colin Hurley (who?!), the Tigers signed Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt, Southern Cal’s Husan Longstreet and project signal caller Landen Clark from Elon, whom Kiffen might want to compare to his diamond in the rough Ole Miss quarterback from last year, Trinidad Chambliss. Leavitt is considered the top transfer QB and player and former five-star Californian Longstreet a top four QB transfer. If Leavitt’s foot heals in time for him to get appreciable spring practice reps, he’ll be the starter behind center in September against Clemson. Since there are no returning or incoming high school quarterbacks, Kiffen’s reputation as a quarterback developer will be on display front and center from Day One.

The second most important portal player might be offensive left tackle Jordan Seaton from Colorado. LSU’s biggest 2025 disaster position lost all but five players, including four starters, but the five returnees, Seaton and guard Aliou Bah from Maryland and five other transfers along with two freshmen should give LSU versatility and two-deep depth to replace one of the most dysfunctional and inexperienced offensive lines in recent Tiger annuls. It simply can’t get any worse than 2025.

Both dependable 2025 running backs return to Baton Rouge. Junior Caden Durham and sophomore Harlem Berry both were vital in producing what little running game they could without a major college quality offensive line. Four other runners from the portal include Dilin Jones, an experienced redshirt sophomore from (you betcha’!) Wisconsin. No freshmen were signed. What up with that!?!

We’ll wrap up this two-part summation with the final offensive position group - tight ends. With the finally developed Trey’Dez Green as starter and seldom used J.D. LaFleur, a legacy freshman who redshirted last year, Kiffen was more concerned with adding depth and signed two portal playersMalachi Thomas from Pitt and hybrid end and fullback Zach Grace from Oregon. Two with experience, two with little or none. Don’t expect to see a Los Angeles Rams type attack from Kiffen with this group.

Next issue: the defensive side, including the younger brother of an LSU All American transfer from last year and the best position filled by incoming high schoolers.

IT’S TIME TO PLANT POTATOES.

Irish potatoes are some of the most popular grown fresh vegetables, according to U.S. consumers. The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) reports that the average person consumed approximately 29.7 lbs of fresh grown Irish potatoes in 2023! That’s actually an 11.9% decrease from 33.7 lbs back in 2016. Even though the per capita consumption has decreased in recent years, potatoes are still the most popular vegetables grown in ag fields and back yards alike. Some of the reasons to explain their popularity include the common occurrence in American cuisine, ease of propagation, and long storage life.

A common misconception about potatoes is that many people believe they are the roots of the potato plant. The edible part of the potato plant is a modified stem, or tuber, that grows in the root system. Tubers are storage organs in which the plants store energy in the form of carbohydrates.

Although they share a common denominator in their name, sweet potatoes don’t have tubers. They store energy directly within root tissue. Commercial producers of sweet potatoes sometimes refer to their crops as swollen roots because of this. To help differentiate between the two, folks in the United States tend to use the term “Irish potato” for the starchy tuberous crop because of how the area was introduced to the plant. Irish potatoes became popular in the early 1800s with the flow of Irish immigrants into the country.

To produce your own crop of potatoes, start out by acquiring seed potatoes, or tubers reserved from last year’s harvest. Garden centers and feed stores stock seed potatoes early in the year. You will find different types available. The most common types are red and white. Some of the recommended red skin varieties include: ‘Norland’, ‘Red LaSoda’ and ‘Red Pontiac’. Recommended white skin potatoes include: ‘Norchip’, ‘Kennebec’ and ‘Yukon Gold’. Fingerling potatoes are increasing in popularity. They are described as small, elongated tubers like that of a finger, hence the name, and come in many different colors. Look through some of your seed catalogs for varieties like ‘Russian Blue’, ‘Red Thumb’, and ‘French Russian Banana’. New potatoes are another popular trend in the industry. Believe it or not, they aren’t a new variety or type of potato. New potatoes are dug earlier when the tubers are much smaller. Any of the above-mentioned varieties can be dug as new potatoes.

Schedule LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL! IN SLIDELL

Friday, January 30

Krewe of Titans - 6:30 PM

Cut each seed potato into 1 ½ - 2-ounce chunks (with each chunk containing 2-3 eyes) and allow them to heal 7 days in a dark, humid area before planting. This allows the gardener to produce several plants from one tuber, and the healing steps allow each “seed” to harden off, creating a protective callous that keeps out unwanted fungi and bacteria. Potatoes can be planted anytime from midJanuary through the end of February. Space plants 12 inches apart and cover with soil. Potatoes plants mature around 2 ft tall and 1 ft wide. After 90 to 120 days, plant growth slows and turns light green/ yellow. That’s the visual cue to let the gardener know when to begin harvest

Hope you are all enduring these freezing temperatures well. I just can’t seem to adjust. Either I can’t get warm or once I am warm I can’t stay that way! It is so frustrating! I know I said I couldn’t wait for winter but I didn’t expect winter to be so cold. Especially after the snow we had last year. I figured we would only temps in the low 40’s , Boy was I WRONG! My daughter and granddaughter are riding in Cleopatra Friday night, they are gonna freeze, while I will be at the house watching tv trying to stay warm. Those days and nights of being cold to watch a parade ended for me a long time ago. I still enjoy going, when the weather is comfortable. I hope those who go have a safe and enjoyable time.

This year Valentine’s Day is just a few days before Mardi Gras so I decided to paint something to hold those sweet treats. At first I was going to paint a wooden heart. But while I was looking for those I happened to find a glass bowl with a wooden top. What better gift for someone than a hand painted container filled with sweet treats? I thought this would be perfect! I had to sand the wooden top quite a bit to get the varnish off so the paint would adhere to the surface better. Then I base coated the surface with Fuschia Pink when dry, I stenciled on the honeycomb pattern, traced on the design, painted the bee first, then the heart. Free handed the lettering, I am still practicing on that. Did the dip dots around the heart and decided it didn’t look “finished”. I added the dip dot hearts and regular dip dots and like it a lot better. This is going to make a nice conversation piece.

Well, this is my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know but I know it will be a lot of fun. Until next time...Stay warm!!!

Sincerely,Paula Johnson

a contender but as one of the most decorated programs in the nation and the team to beat coming off a historic campaign. After capturing the NCAA National Championship in 2025, LSU enters this season with sky-high expectations, a loaded roster, and a schedule that will test its mettle from February through the SEC grind and into postseason play.

Last Season’s Legacy and the Road Ahead

Well, even though the basketball team just beat the 2nd worst team in the conference…we still suck! Let us move on to something we can all be happy about…baseball!

The LSU Tigers baseball arrive in 2026 not just as

The Tigers concluded 2025 with a 53–15 overall record, culminating in their eighth national title and second in three years—a feat that cements LSU’s place atop college baseball’s elite. That success wasn’t accidental; it was the result of a deep lineup, electric pitching, and the strategic acumen of head coach Jay Johnson, now entering his fifth season in Baton Rouge.

With that pedigree, LSU enters 2026 ranked among the nation’s best. Multiple preseason polls have slotted the Tigers No. 2 nationally, including Baseball America’s poll, and they’ve also garnered No. 1 status in Perfect Game’s preseason rankings, underscoring broad respect from analysts and opponents alike.

Offense: Veteran Power and Dynamic Run Production

Offensively, LSU returns a core of impact players who delivered consistently in 2025. Catcher Cade Arrambide steps into a full-time role after a breakout period last year, offering power and defensive leadership behind the plate — the Tigers will lean on his development to anchor the lineup.

Up the middle and around the bases, the Tigers boast consistent production from several key contributors:

Zach Yorke (1B), a transfer standout, anchors first base with a bat that combines average and power. His 13-home run performance last season gave fans a taste of what he can deliver.

Steven Milam (SS) and Trent Caraway (3B) provide middle-infielder pop, both capable of run production while handling defensive responsibilities with reliability.

Tanner Reaves (2B) offers steady contact and on-base skills that set the table for LSU’s heart-of-theorder bats.

In the outfield, Derek Curiel returns as one of the nation’s most exciting sophomores; he was recognized by Perfect Game as one of the top sophomore hitters in the country and profiles as a dynamic force both at the plate and in the field.

This blend of veteran power, developing stars, and transfer impact puts LSU in position to score in bunches and pressure opposing SEC pitching staffs game after game.

Pitching: Depth, Talent, and Fresh Arms

LSU’s pitching remains a cornerstone of its championship identity. While some stars have moved on to professional baseball via the draft, the Tigers still feature a deep and intriguing corps:

Casan Evans is projected to contribute as a key arm in the rotation, capable of taking the ball early and setting the tone with strikeouts and command.

Sophomore arms like William Schmidt and Mavrick Rizy bring polished stuff and experience from bullpen roles last season, offering versatility whether starting or relieving.

One of LSU’s strengths this season will be its pitching depth. With multiple options capable of giving quality innings, the Tigers can manage workloads and adjust to SEC challenges, particularly against highpowered offenses like Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Ole Miss.

Schedule Challenges and Key Tests

The 2026 slate offers a rigorous path to postseason success. LSU’s 56-game schedule features a mix of non-conference powerhouses — including Notre Dame and Indiana in early classics — and a daunting SEC gauntlet. Every series against league foes like Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Auburn, and Ole Miss will carry implications for postseason seeding and momentum.

With over half of its schedule against teams that made the 2025 NCAA Tournament, LSU will be battletested long before the postseason begins — a strategic advantage in building experience and confidence.

Outlook:

National Contender, SEC Powerhouse

In a season that projects as one of the deepest and most competitive in recent memory, LSU stands ready to defend its title and chase a third national championship in four years. With a blend of veteran

Continued at top of next page, Just Sports, pp.5

leadership, emerging stars, and pitching versatility, the Tigers are not just contenders — they are a measuring stick for excellence in college baseball.

Expect the swings at Alex Box Stadium to be loud, the pitching to be sharp, and the competitive fire — unmistakably Tiger — to burn bright from February through Omaha.

CHARD, BROCCOLI, & KALE THRIVE IN WINTER GARDENS

Some of the best vegetables you can grow here in the South don’t mind a little chill. When the heat finally fades, our gardens enter a season of vibrant greens, crisp harvests and some truly beautiful foliage. In Mississippi, these crops can be grown not only through fall and winter, but well into spring.

Three of my favorite cool-season vegetables that will keep your beds productive through the cooler months are Swiss chard, broccoli and kale.

If you’re looking for vegetables that are both beautiful and delicious, Swiss chard should be at the top of your list. This leafy green may be one of the most eye-catching plants you can grow. Its stems come in vivid shades of red, yellow and orange, creating a splash of color that rivals flowering ornamentals. Swiss chard thrives in temperatures between 40 and 75 degrees. This makes it ideal for our fall, winter and spring gardens.

Mature plants can handle temperatures down to the upper 20s, especially with a layer of mulch or light frost cloth. I plant my chard in full sun, although it can tolerate light afternoon shade in warm areas. Chard prefers well-draining soil rich in organic matter with a pH between 6.0–7.0. Work compost into the bed before planting, and water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Chard is a “cut-and-come-again” crop. Harvest the outer leaves and let the center continue to produce new growth for steady harvests all season long.

Broccoli is a tried-and-true favorite that shines in cool weather. It needs cooler temperatures -- ideally 55 to 70 degrees -- to form those firm, compact heads we love. Broccoli prefers nutrient-rich soil with plenty of organic matter. Before planting, I mix in compost and a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support strong growth. Keep the soil slightly moist, especially during dry winter spells, because broccoli has shallow roots that dry out quickly. Mulch helps regulate soil temperature and holds moisture.

Most broccoli varieties are cold hardy down to the mid-20s once estab-lished. Young plants benefit from protection during early frosts, but mature plants tolerate chilly nights very well. After harvesting the main head, many broccoli varieties will continue producing smaller side shoots, providing a bonus harvest for several weeks.

No list of cool-season vegetables is complete without kale. This leafy green is one of the most coldtolerant vegetables you can grow. A light frost can actually enhance its flavor, giving the leaves a sweeter, richer taste. Kale brings bold texture to the garden with its ruffled or curly foliage, and its productivity makes it hard to beat.

For best growth, plant kale where it gets at least six hours of full sun a day, but it also performs well in partial shade. It prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0–7.5. Regular watering helps keep the leaves tender, but kale is more drought-forgiving than many other leafy greens. Cold hardiness varies slightly by variety, but most kale tolerates temperatures down to the low 20s. Many varieties can handle even colder weather with protection. Siberian- and Russian-type kale tend to be especially hardy. With thoughtful care and attention to their growing requirements, these cool-season vegetables will reward you with fresh, homegrown produce and colorful, textural interest through the cooler months.

AMERICAN BEAUTYBERRY

One of the most overlooked plants to consider adding to your landscape is the American Beautyberry, Callicarpa america-na. The American Beautyberry is native to the Southeastern United States and found exten-sively here in south Mississippi. It is a moder-ate-to-largesize native perennial shrub found in forested areas but are grown as specimen plants in the landscape.

While sometimes considered an understory plant, American beautyberry needs full sun or part shade to thrive. It is adapted to many soils and can thrive in moist and drier areas but prefers acidic soils. The lime green opposite-leaved foliage provides an excellent contrast to the vibrant fruit that surrounds the stem at leaf nodes. The late summer onset of fruit provides a wonderful fall color.

The fruit is often deep purple but available in a variety of attractive colors of white, pink, burgundy and more. While astringent and not flavorful raw, the ber-ries can be made into jellies, jams, and wines, tasting similar to grape jelly when processed. Plants may show up as volunteers because birds love the large clusters of berries and help to spread the seed. As a result, these are the perfect plants for someone interested in attracting wildlife to the landscape.

One of the many benefits of American Beautyberry is it’s a very lowmaintenance landscape plant, only needing light thinning, if desired, to prevent a leg-gy appearance and provide a more uniform shape. Sheering will remove flowers and fruit. Overgrown plants can be reset pruned but, they’re easy to propagate by cuttings and seed. Try planting many together to create an attractive native screen or hedge. Next time you’re trying to find an attractive shrub that provides many benefits, con-sider an American Beautyberry.

LOW-MAINTENANCE LANDSCAPES

Maintaining a beautiful landscape doesn’t have to mean endless mowing, pruning, and watering. Low-maintenance land-scaping uses thoughtful plant selection, design, and management practices to create attractive, resilient spaces that require less time, water, and chemical input. This approach benefits both the gardener and the environment.

The foundation of any low-maintenance landscape is proper planning. A well-designed landscape works with nature. Matching plants to site conditions is an important step in reduc-ing long-term maintenance. Before planting, evaluate your site carefully. Areas that stay wet after rain, receive intense afternoon sun, or have compacted soil each require specific plant types. Grouping plants with similar water and light needs allows for more efficient irrigation and reduces stress on plants.

Plant selection determines much of a landscape’s upkeep. Native and well-adapted species are ideal choices for low-maintenance designs. Because they evolved under local conditions, native plants generally resist local pests and diseases and thrive without excessive fertilizer or watering. Avoid highmaintenance spe-cies that require frequent pruning or specialized care. Reducing lawn space with groundcovers, native grasses, or mixed planting beds can reduce mowing and chemical use.

Use water efficiently. Drip irrigation systems or soaker hoses deliver water directly to roots, reducing evaporation and runoff. Watering deeply but infrequently encourages deep root systems and greater drought tolerance. A 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as pine needles, bark chips, or composted leaves, helps regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and conserve moisture. As mulch breaks down, it also adds organic matter, feeding beneficial soil organisms that improve soil structure.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques can further minimize chemical use. Instead of routine spraying, gardeners monitor for pests, encourage natural predators, and intervene only when damage exceeds acceptable levels. Diverse plantings support more beneficial insects and reduce pest outbreaks compared to monocultures. This balanced approach protects pollinators and soil health.

While low-maintenance landscapes need occasional care, strategic choices can be made to make it minimal: mowing less frequently, fertilizing only when needed, and selective pruning are simple, but effective ways to reduce inputs. And by selecting the right plants, designing for site conditions, and reducing chemical and water inputs, homeowners can enjoy landscapes that are both beautiful and sustainable. The result is more time to enjoy the outdoors and less time maintaining it. START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

As you can see, we are comfy and cozy together in our warm bed. Molly and Matilda want you to know that they are enjoying being out of the cold and in a toasty, warm house. They are two of a litter of 4 feral kittens rescued a few months ago and placed in foster homes until they can find their own forever homes. Their two sisters will be adopted together soon. They are a bonded pair just like these two kitties who will be available for adoption soon. We are so fortunate to have volunteers who will work with kittens and adult cats so that they can have the chance to be adopted into loving homes. If you are seeing a stray cat frequently, please provide a warm bed for it and food to help it survive this cold weather. Contact your local shelter or rescue group to see if they can help with getting the cat spayed or neutered as well as possibly finding it a home. Stay warm! Spring is on the way.
