It’s not her (Kim Mulkey’s) outfits or her fire. It’s got to be the same problem LSU football has against Alabama most of the time.
Cold feet. Lack of execution. Lack of offensive (or defensive) power and maintenance of discipline.
Against one of the better (but not the best) South Carolina basketball squad under Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks proved once again that there’s always a bright Dawn in Columbia but LSU lady’s basketball is still in an early morning fog. And it was evident that this was coming watching the anemic performance of these same clawless Tigers who let Texas treat them like their downtown b……ches earlier this month.
What happened to the national scoring machine from the preseason? Same thing that always happens. Rack up over 100 points per game against a series of pitty-pat teams before Groundhog Day and your alleged scoring acumen shows its feet of clay when the real season starts. Until LSU is able (or willing) to play some of the non-conference toughies in the late fall and winter, these Tigers aren’t going to win it all again like they did against Iowa in 2023. Now the SEC has more powerful lady hoopster teams besides South Carolina. Tennessee, Texas and Vanderbilt are equal or superior to LSU this year and although the Tigers will be in the postseason, can you imagine what Connecticut would do to them in a meaningful game?
Until this team plays a more challenging preseason schedule, don’t expect to see them win the SEC and the national championship.

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this special one. Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times, for three days and your favor will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.T.O.

SOIL TESTING.
If you’ve ever worked with an Extension Agent on diagnosing plant problems, I’m sure they asked you if there has ever been a soil test done. It may seem like a way to delay a site visit, but in all reality, a soil report tells you a lot about the direct growing environment. It provides a snapshot of the chemical conditions occurring within the root zone of your plants and is way to observe soil fertility, or the ability of soil to support plant life. This relates directly to plant nutrition and is something that can be managed by the home gardener via soil amendments and fertilizers.
To observe the current soil fertility, consider sampling the soil and sending it off to a soil lab. The LSU AgCenter operates a soil testing laboratory on campus in Baton Rouge, LA. Check with your local extension office on how to get a sample over to the lab. Most offices put together a simple mail-in box for this purpose. All you need is to locate one and bring it back home with you. You will need to take the samples, fill out a form, add everything back to the box, and mail them directly to the lab. There are several private soil labs out there and they would have similar procedures.
To take a proper soil sample, you want to get an average representation of the soil in the growing area. Accomplish this by taking 10-12 samples from throughout the area and mixing them together. These “sub samples” should be from soil 4-6 inches below the surface. Fill one of the bags included in the mail-in box with your soil mixture and give it a descriptive sample name. Repeat the process if you are looking at more than one growing area. Fill out the lab submission form, making sure sample names are transcribed along with the crops to be grown. The crop to be grown refers to the plants you are growing in this area. Each plant requires a slightly different combination of nutrient concentrations and that information is used to provide specific recommendations.
When the report comes back, review the results to see what is deficient. The LSU AgCenter and most private labs use a rating system for each of the nutrients on the soil test. Identify nutrients that are rated “Very Low” and “Low”. I like to add asterisks directly to the report as I review it to help with selecting fertilizers or soil amendments that complement the deficiencies. One of the most important pieces of information learned from a soil test is the soil pH number. Soil pH determines the molecular form of the plant nutrient. You can have plenty of the nutrient in the soil, but if it’s not in the right form, then the plant can’t take it up. Follow any soil pH recommendations provided in the report. Most of the soils within the Florida parishes region tend to be acidic and require lime to adjust pH, while alluvial soils close to the Mississippi River can be slightly basic and require elemental sulfur to adjust. Nutrients like phosphorous and potassium are considered macronutrients in plants, meaning that plants utilize them in larger amounts during growth and development. It is highly recommended to follow phosphorous and potassium requirements because they have such a direct effect on plant growth. For soils low in both, a complete fertilizer would be a good choice. Complete fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium all in one application, making it easier for the grower to apply. There are individual options available and it might be best to have a conversation with an extension agent to learn of different ways to add these deficient nutrients. Especially if you are looking for organic options.
My last bit of advice on soil sampling pertains to how you are growing the plants in question. The recommendations on a soil test will be presented as an amount of product over a given area. You should know the area of your flowerbeds, raised bed gardens, in-ground vegetable gardens, or lawn areas before taking corrective action. This is how you determine the right amount of product to add and prevent any issues with over application. The area of squares and rectangles can be determined by measuring the length and width and then multiplying them together. Use feet (ft) when measuring so that you end up with ft2 (ft X ft) as the unit. The area of a circle is πr2 with r being the radius (half the diameter). Some folks may need to revisit geometry to refresh on how to determine area, but trust me, it’s a valuable part of the equation!

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
As you can see, we are comfy and cozy together in our warm bed. Molly and Matilda want you to know that they are enjoying being out of the cold and in a toasty, warm house. They are two of a litter of 4 feral kittens rescued a few months ago and placed in foster homes until they can find their own forever homes. Their two sisters will be adopted together soon. They are a bonded pair just like these two kitties who will be available for adoption soon. We are so fortunate to have volunteers who will work with kittens and adult cats so that they can have the chance to be adopted into loving homes. If you are seeing a stray cat frequently, please provide a warm bed for it and food to help it survive this cold weather. Contact your local shelter or rescue group to see if they can help with getting the cat spayed or neutered as well as possibly finding it a home. Stay warm! Spring is on the way.

1) Will Wade – The fastest path to relevance
Momentum around LSU Tigers men’s basketball has shifted from long-term patience to short-term urgency. This would not be a speculative rebuild hire. It would be a portal-first, win-now appointment designed to stabilize the roster, re-energize the fan base, and restore SEC competitiveness quickly.
Here is how the imminent-change candidate list realistically stacks up:
If LSU wants immediate wins, credibility, and buzz, Wade is the most direct solution. His previous run in Baton Rouge proved he can recruit nationally, dominate the transfer market, and win in the SEC. Since leaving LSU, he’s only reinforced the perception that he can turn programs quickly with aggressive roster construction.
Why he tops the list:
Instant portal credibility
Immediate fan and donor buy-in
Proven SEC winner
Why it’s complicated:
Administrative comfort and optics. But if a change is truly imminent, urgency usually overrides hesitation—and Wade delivers urgency like no one else on this list.
2) Chris Beard – Proven winner with tournament teeth
Beard represents the “serious basketball program” pivot. His teams defend at an elite level, play physically, and are built to survive March. If LSU wants to reset its identity overnight, Beard’s résumé does the talking.
Why he fits now:
Immediate defensive identity
Track record of quick turnarounds
National respect
What it costs:
Money, control, and alignment. Beard-level hires require full institutional commitment—but if LSU is making a clean break, this is the caliber of coach who justifies it.
3) Mark Byington – The modern SEC disruptor
Byington has quietly built one of the SEC’s most efficient modern programs. He blends analytics, spacing, toughness, and portal efficiency—exactly what LSU needs if it wants sustainability without sacrificing competitiveness.
Why he jumps near the top:
Proven SEC success with fewer resources
Portal-savvy roster builder
Younger, upward trajectory
The urgency factor:
If LSU waits, someone else won’t. Byington is the kind of coach you hire before he becomes untouchable.
4) Grant McCasland – Culture + consistency play
McCasland is the stabilizer. His teams are disciplined, defensively sound, and veteran-driven. He wins close games and avoids long rebuilds—traits that matter when a fan base is impatient.
Why he’s viable in an immediate search:
Portal evaluation success
Clear system identity
Strong locker-room reputation
Concern:
Not flashy. But imminent-change searches often value certainty over sizzle.
5) Jerome Tang – Energy, toughness, and credibility
Tang brings program credibility, defensive intensity, and strong player development roots. His teams compete physically and emotionally—something LSU has lacked consistently.
Why he fits a now-hire:
Immediate cultural reset
Defensive emphasis
Strong staff builder
Barrier:
Buyout and competition. Tang will not be cheap or uncontested.
6) Andy Kennedy – The stabilizing SEC-adjacent option
If LSU prioritizes experience and regional recruiting familiarity, Kennedy is a pragmatic choice. He wins,
Continued at top of next page, Just Sports, pp.5
MOLLY & MATILDA
manages rosters well, and understands Southern recruiting ecosystems.
Why he’s on the imminent list:
Reliable program manager
Strong portal retention
Lower transition risk
Ceiling question:
Can he elevate LSU beyond “competitive” into consistent NCAA relevance?
What this list says about LSU right now?
An imminent change means LSU is no longer shopping for potential—it’s shopping for solutions. The Tigers would be signaling that:
The roster must flip immediately
NIL and portal infrastructure are ready
Short-term competitiveness matters as much as long-term vision
In that context, this search narrows quickly. If LSU pulls the trigger now, expect a hire from the top half of this list, not a surprise flyer.

Late February to early March is the perfect time to plant blackberries. Blackberries grow best in areas of full sun and well-drained soil. They prefer soil with 6.0-6.5 pH levels and high organic matter. Sandy loam or loam soils are best as they cannot tolerate wet soil beds. If your soil is not ideal, raised beds and containers are great for growing blackberries! When planting blackberries, space plants 2 feet apart with rows 10-12 feed from a hedgerow. Fertilize with 10-10-10 or 13-13-13 one month after planting and again in late June (using 5.5 pounds per 100 feet of row in a 2- foot band.) Increase the fertilizer rate the next year to 11.5 pounds per 100 feet of row applied in Febru-ary and 5.5 pounds per 100 feet in June. Spread the fertilizer evenly over a 2-foot band. In following years, use 11 pounds of fertilizer per 100 feet in March and 5.5 pounds of fertilizer per 100 feet of row immediately after harvest, evenly applied over a 3-foot band.
Rosette or double blossom is a fungal disease that can limit blackberry production. Thorny cultivars are not immune to this disease, but thornless cultivars do have some tolerance. One way to help control this dis-ease is to eradicate any wild blackberries nearby and spray any diseased blackberries. Other pests and abiotic issues include spotted wing drosophila fruit fly, cane borers, drosophila fruit fly, and white drupelet disorder.
Blackberries ripen in late May and early June. Each of the recommended cultivars listed below can produce ½-2½ gallons per plant or 2-3 tons per acre. Blackberries need to be fully ripe when harvested; they do not ripen after harvest. Most cultivars will produce fruit for 2-4 weeks. Do not let harvested berries sit in full sun; refrigerate blackberries as soon as possible after harvest.
Thornless cultivars: Apache
Arapaho
Caddo
Navaho
Natchez
Osage
Ouachita
Ponca
Sweetie Pie
Triple Crown
Primocane Fruiting Cultivars
Thorny cultivars: Chickasaw Kiowa

WHIFF OF KIFF : PART II - DEFENSE KIFF’S ‘D’ SHOULD BE HOT FROM THE OVEN WITH TOP-NOTCH BAKER
What little solace serious LSU fans took from the final partial season of Kelly’s Zeros in 2025 came from taking the Brothers Weeks and some good defensive but injury prone linemen and stirring in not one but two All-American defensive backs. The results? pretty good against the passing game, atrociously terrible against pressuring opponent’s offensive schemes, bad form against five teams that LSU faced.
Most of the transfer portal outbounds were not from the defensive squad. Players had exhausted their eligibility and a couple probably will see their place on the NFL Draft stage during Round One this spring,
Make no mistake: the biggest defensive move was keeping Blake Baker as the defensive coordinator and persuading Whit Weeks to return one more time as the Tigers seek redemption for a mediocre 2025 campaign.
Unlike the offense, where little help is expected in 2026, the defensive haul of high schoolers was sterling. Led by three top ten linemen, the Tigers wrapped up the country’s best defensive player (from Louisiana), Lamar Brown and the highly talented Trenton Henderson, both at defensive end. The starters most likely will be Pricewill Umanmielen, a senior transfer from Ole Miss and Gabriel Reliford, a returning redshirt sophomore. Reliford will probably hold down the fort as Brown rides the fast track to starting in Tigertown, maybe as early as the McNeese game in early October. Two other experienced SEC bookends and three returning squad members make this position potentially the stronger of the two defensive line groups and one with proven depth.
Defensive tackle was decimated by outgoing players with no bona fide starter that can be penciled in from among the three returning roster players. Led by the potential of former five-star Dominick McKinley, this group includes probable first year starter Richard Anderson, one of the top national preps last year, also from Louisiana and a five-star just slightly below the potential of Lamar Brown at defensive end. Three portal players, two from the SEC, add depth to a position of relative weakness. One other freshman was signed. This will be Baker’s biggest project.
Not so at linebacker, where All American Whit Weeks, his younger brother, Zack and two other starter quality players have the inside track. Davhon Keys came on strong during the last half on f last season and will start with the elder Weeks, along with another superb Ole Miss transfer, T.J. Dottery, who led the conference in tackles in 2025. Four other squad returnees and one other transfer, Theo Grace from powerhouse North Dakota State, will provide depth and relief along with the freshman Weeks.
The strongest position will be cornerback, where two of the three regular starters return. D.J. Picket and P.J. Woodland have their positions locked down. Three returning backups and three incoming freshmen make this group one that can develop a little slower than the defensive end players and still be ready for Clemson and a star-studded schedule that feature two powerhouses early (Ole Miss and Texas A&M) and two late (Texas and Alabama). The Tide may be the weakest of the four, something I never thought I would say or think in my years of covering Alabama. Clemson is a question mark as is Auburn but Tennesse and Arkansas are late and away, cold weather campuses in November, especially Arkansas.

Safety has one top flight returning starter (Tamarcus Cooley) and two of three others with enough experience to start (Dashawn Spears and CJ Jimcoily). However, transfer player Ty Benefield from Boise State probably will play opposite Cooley. Meanwhile, the younger brother of Mansoor Delane, Feheem, an Ohio State transfer, will see if he can make some of the impact his now NFL headed brother provided for the Tigers in 2025. Two other portal players and three incoming freshmen will make this group a developmental strength for the defense and perhaps its deepest.
Special Teams - not much to talk about here. No even really good things to say with the return of so-so punter Grant Chadwick, portal punter Hayden Craig from Florida along with Gator long snapper Mack Mulhern and kicker Scott Starzyk from Arkansas. Starzyk did make two kicks of more than 50 yards and was 14 of 18 in the thin air of Fayetteville and what happened to LSU’s supply line from Georgia on recruiting long snappers?
Kick and Punt Returners - your guess is as good as mine. I’m thinking with a lack of running backs, the receiver pool and the extra large safeties room will provide at least one of the return positions. Heaven knows who will be the gunner.
PAWPAW TREE—A MISSISSIPPI NATIVE
With Arbor Day events looming, the pawpaw tree. Asimina triloba, is one of the most sought-after trees being given away, though many were not familiar with it.
The pawpaw tree is a fruit tree native to the Eastern United States. It produces cylindrical fruits with green skin and a pale yellow flesh that some say tastes like creamy banana and pineapple.
While pawpaws grow naturally as an understory tree, make sure to plant yours in partial to full sun as sun is required for fruit production. However, if you have a tree less than 1 ½ feet tall, protect it from the sun for the first year as the young tree is sensitive to sunlight. They should be planted while dormant in the early spring, preferably in well-drained, deep, fertile soil.
Pawpaws thrive in slightly acidic soil down to a pH of 5.5 and will need plenty of water, especially during the first year of establishment. Expect seedlings to produce fruit in 7-8 years and grafted trees to produce in 3-4 years. Make sure to plant more than one seedling or cultivar as crosspollination is required for fruit set. Pawpaw trees bloom in mid-spring before the trees leaf out and can reach up to two inches in diameter. The flowers are rarely visited by bees and are instead pollinated by flies and beetles. Pollinating by hand is labor-intensive but can also greatly increase the amount of fruit produced.
Pawpaw fruit is rich with a custard consistency, very nutritious, and best eaten fresh whe fully ripe.
Tree-ripened fruit will usually last from 3-5 days at room temperature. Pawpaws can also be used in recipes as a substitute for banana. The seeds within the center of the fruit should not be eaten.
Due to short shelf life, you likely won’t see pawpaws in the grocery store. To get a taste of the fruit, plant a few in your garden or make friends with someone who already has a couple trees. Even if the pawpaw ends up not being to your taste, it is a beautiful native tree that will add texture to your garden.
GIVE UP A LONELY HOME WITHOUT A PET
After the fun and excitement of Mardi Gras, many households enter the quieter, reflective days leading up to Easter. For families and individuals who observe Lent, this season is often about giving something up. Whether that is a chance to slow down or reflect, it’s an opportunity to make meaningful choices. This year, the Louisiana SPCA invites you to consider a different kind of practice: “Giving Up a Lonely Home Without a Pet.” By welcoming a furry friend into your life, you’re not only enriching your home but promoting love, companionship, and wellness for both you and a pet looking for a loving home.
February is often known as the month of love, acceptance, and change, but for those of us in the pet world, it’s also National Cat Health Month. Which means it’s the perfect time to consider welcoming a cat into your home. Adopting a cat from an animal shelter can transform their life and support their physical and mental well-being. A loving, enriched environment helps cats thrive. A stable, loving home gives a cat the chance to heal and thrive in ways that aren’t always possible in a shelter environment. In a calm, enriched home, cats can recover from past illnesses or injuries, reduce stress, and build confidence. Regular wellness checkups, interactive play, scratching posts, and gentle cuddles all support their physical and mental well-being, helping them grow into healthy, happy companions.
Bringing a cat, dog, or other companion into your home can reduce stress, ease feelings of loneliness, and fill your days with joy, love, and companionship. Fostering or adopting a pet allows you to share these benefits with an animal in need, providing them with a safe, nurturing home while they wait for their forever family. It’s a powerful way to “give up” loneliness this season and create a happier, healthier home for both you and a deserving pet.
Whether you celebrate Lent or simply want to make a meaningful change in your life, this is the season of reflection and giving. So, consider opening your heart and home to a new companion that can bring joy, comfort, and companionship. Visit your local Louisiana SPCA campus to celebrate Cat Health Month by giving a cat or kitten in need a loving home this season.
