Tony’s Take BOBBY THE BARBER

Growing up in the shadows of the Korean conflict and the mentoring from veterans of World War Two, there were certain people who you needed to cultivate in your lifetime. Listening to my mentors, it was imperative that besides a good preacher and school teachers, certain professionals would be necessary to navigate the world between pre- and post nuclear.

My first impression came when I was barely potty trained whenI got my first haircut. I don’t remember a thing about it - whether it was fun or frustrating - but I realized that sitting in that special spinning chair, along with the smells and sights of an old-fashioned barber shop were things I wanted to keep in my life.

Through the years and various homes and towns, I went to a local barber shop. Not where my Dad went, I suppose, because my Dad was not a domestic father who shared much with either of his two children. So I learned about Wildroot Cream Oil, razor straps or strops and girlie magazines, butch wax and flattops. San Francisco, Burlingame, Los Angeles, Baton Rouge, various northern California cities, Cheyenne, Shreveport….all good barber shops but nothing to get my attention. Until Slidell. I can’t remember the first ten years here because I was so immersed in my career and career redirection. But when Idecided on my first continuous barber, I started paying more attention to the cuts and the atmosphere.

About 18 years ago, I made a change to Cornibe’s - as treasured old single quasi-shotgun house in Olde Towne. Old man Cornibe was my first barber but soon I switched over to a real country boy by the name of Bobby Cockerham. Bobby was as different from me on the surface as we could be. He was a rural Louisiana fundamentalist, close to the Mickey Gilley family tree around Ferriday. Ferriday wasn’t and still isn’t what you would call a liberal town. In fact, Bobby and I would have been enemies in a younger day. But Bobby and I had both changed over the years and our basic beliefs and common interest in The Duke, John Wayne, began a relationship every four weeks where he would treat my hair and beard the way the world should treat all of its inhabitants.

Bobby had a stubborn streak but his craft was his pride. He made sure his regular customers were treated right and barber shop arguments were minor and usually involved one of two other barbers in the place. Both of them passed, one during Covid and the other in 2024. But even with eye problems and a heart condition, Bobby trimmed on, now working on appointments exclusively since 2020.

Last week, I was told Bobby died just before the New Year, after a sudden bout with pneumonia. Bobby left a loving wife and several households full of children, grandchildren and even a great-grandchild or two.

Losing a barber at my age is like losing a vital family member. Fortunately, a good friend of mine recommended his barber at a shop close by Cornibe’s so I’ll be switching my early Saturday morning four week locale. I haven’t been in the new shop but I hope they have a t.v. where old Westerns are shown. I still have my bartender and friends but I wouldn’t let any of them sculpt my hair or my beard. Bobby - if you see The Duke up there, would you say “hello” for me? Love ya, man!

IT’S TIME TO PLANT POTATOES.

Irish potatoes are some of the most popular grown fresh vegetables, according to U.S. consumers. The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) reports that the average person consumed approximately 29.7 lbs of fresh grown Irish potatoes in 2023! That’s actually an 11.9% decrease from 33.7 lbs back in 2016. Even though the per capita consumption has decreased in recent years, potatoes are still the most popular vegetables grown in ag fields and back yards alike. Some of the reasons to explain their popularity include the common occurrence in American cuisine, ease of propagation, and long storage life.

A common misconception about potatoes is that many people believe they are the roots of the potato plant. The edible part of the potato plant is a modified stem, or tuber, that grows in the root system. Tubers are storage organs in which the plants store energy in the form of carbohydrates.

Although they share a common denominator in their name, sweet potatoes don’t have tubers. They store energy directly within root tissue. Commercial producers of sweet potatoes sometimes refer to their crops as swollen roots because of this. To help differentiate between the two, folks in the United States tend to use the term “Irish potato” for the starchy tuberous crop because of how the area was introduced to the plant. Irish potatoes became popular in the early 1800s with the flow of Irish immigrants into the country.

To produce your own crop of potatoes, start out by acquiring seed potatoes, or tubers reserved from last year’s harvest. Garden centers and feed stores stock seed potatoes early in the year. You will find different types available. The most common types are red and white. Some of the recommended red skin varieties include: ‘Norland’, ‘Red LaSoda’ and ‘Red Pontiac’. Recommended white skin potatoes include: ‘Norchip’, ‘Kennebec’ and ‘Yukon Gold’. Fingerling potatoes are increasing in popularity. They are described as small, elongated tubers like that of a finger, hence the name, and come in many different colors. Look through some of your seed catalogs for varieties like ‘Russian Blue’, ‘Red Thumb’, and ‘French Russian Banana’. New potatoes are another popular trend in the industry. Believe it or not, they aren’t a new variety or type of potato. New potatoes are dug earlier when the tubers are much smaller. Any of the above-mentioned varieties can be dug as new potatoes.

Schedule LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL! IN SLIDELL

Friday, January 30

Krewe of Titans - 6:30 PM

Cut each seed potato into 1 ½ - 2-ounce chunks (with each chunk containing 2-3 eyes) and allow them to heal 7 days in a dark, humid area before planting. This allows the gardener to produce several plants from one tuber, and the healing steps allow each “seed” to harden off, creating a protective callous that keeps out unwanted fungi and bacteria. Potatoes can be planted anytime from midJanuary through the end of February. Space plants 12 inches apart and cover with soil. Potatoes plants mature around 2 ft tall and 1 ft wide. After 90 to 120 days, plant growth slows and turns light green/ yellow. That’s the visual cue to let the gardener know when to begin harvest

Can you believe we are already in the middle of January? It just doesn’t seem possible! I was hoping this would be a slow laid back year. But it is Not starting out that way. I have been constantly on the go for one thing or another. I don’t know how to say NO. But that is okay, I like things for others. With that being said, I did not get to complete the third ornament in the set or start the Valentine piece I wanted to share with you. So I am sharing one of the pieces I did in November.

I ordered Football Mums, and what they sent me was Dodie Mums. They are smaller but just as beautiful, even though they are shaped a little differently. Instead of using my regular jade and leather leaf, I decided on Robellini. The leaves on the stem are smaller and can be cut into any design you want. I don’t know why I hadn’t used it in such a long time. I also added yellow alstroemeria and limonium. I did put a little jade and leather leaf around the bottom in the front of the design. I must be honest, I really liked the way this bouquet came out.

Hopefully, I will be able to work on the Valentine piece soon. So....till next time. What will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know, but I know it will be lots of fun.

Sincerely,Paula Johnson

When Lane Kiffin was introduced as head coach of LSU football on November 30, 2025, one question immediately bubbled to the surface: how aggressively would the “Portal King” leverage the NCAA transfer portal to reshape the Tigers’ roster? The answer, by early January 2026, was emphatic: very aggressively. In a short window of just a few weeks,

LSU assembled what many evaluators are calling the No. 1 transfer portal class in the nation — a raft of experienced, high-impact players at key positions designed to accelerate a turnaround and reinvigorate a program that finished 7-5 in 2025.

Kiffin’s portal strategy hit on two overarching themes: talent + experience. Rather than simply adding bodies, the staff targeted players with starting experience, production, and positional need fits, often competing — and prevailing — against other Power Five programs. The result was a class that blends immediate starters with long-term building blocks, both offensively and defensively.

1. Signal Caller Priority: Sam Leavitt Headlines the Class

The crown jewel of LSU’s portal activity is undoubtedly quarterback Sam Leavitt, who chose LSU over multiple suitors including Tennessee, Miami, and Kentucky. Leavitt, previously at Arizona State, was the No. 1 player ranked in the transfer portal by 247Sports and brings a résumé that includes a CFP berth and Big 12 title from his 2024 season.

At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Leavitt presents the balance of production and dual-threat capability that Kiffin covets in a quarterback: over his career he has thrown for more than 4,600 yards and 36 touchdowns while adding over 800 yards and 10 scores on the ground. He missed the latter half of 2025 due to injury, but his track record positions him as both an immediate starter and a cornerstone for an offense that Kiffin hopes will be among the nation’s most dynamic in 2026.

LSU also added Landen Clark from Elon — a dual-threat signal-caller who rushed for over 600 yards and 11 touchdowns and earned multiple rookie honors in the FCS. Clark gives LSU supplementary depth and presents intriguing development potential under Kiffin’s tutelage.

2. Offensive Reinforcements: Line and Skill Positions

Beyond quarterback, LSU’s portal class bolstered the offensive line and skill positions — an area of significant attrition after the 2025 season:

Offensive Line Additions: The Tigers landed multiple offensive linemen, including a potential starting tackle who flipped from North Carolina, a versatile interior player who originally committed to Ole Miss before returning to LSU, and veteran guard Aliou Bah, who brings 23 consecutive starts from Maryland. These additions directly address an offensive line that struggled in 2025 and saw significant departures.

Running Backs & Skill Depth: At running back, LSU added a trio of backs from the portal — Raycine Guillory (Utah), Rod Gainey Jr. (Charlotte), and Dilin Jones (Wisconsin) — along with Stacy Gage from UCF. This group provides depth, versatility and rotational options for a backfield that lacked explosive playmakers.

3. Defensive Additions: Tackling Turnover and Building Strength

On defense, Kiffin and defensive coordinator Blake Baker were equally assertive in the portal: Linebacker TJ Dottery, a tackling leader from Ole Miss, brings SEC experience and production that should translate immediately — particularly in run support and as a secondary blitzer.

Safety Faheem Delane (formerly of Ohio State) adds depth and playmaking capability to a secondary that required reinforcements due to attrition. More important, Delane is the younger brother of Mansoor Delane, LSU’s consensus All American last year and one of the highest ranked prep defensive backs from his class two years ago. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Mason Dossett, a player switching back to safety after time at receiver, offers a developmental piece with intriguing athleticism, while TJ Dottery — the SEC’s leading tackler in 2025 — projects to be a defensive centerpiece.

Combined, these transfers offer a blend of experience, physicality, and scheme versatility, arguably turning what was a developing defense into a unit capable of pressing for big-play stops in the highly competitive SEC.

4. Class Scale and Competitive Success

By the time the portal closed, LSU had signed upwards of 35+ players — a class that includes immediate starting prospects and significant depth pieces to sustain a grueling SEC slate. Multiple national outlets have ranked LSU’s portal haul at No. 1 in the country, a testament not only to the quantity of acquisitions but also to their quality and fit within Kiffin’s envisioned system.

This level of portal success is significant for a first-year head coach and highlights Kiffin’s recruiting urgency and national reach. LSU’s ability to pull high-profile transfers like Leavitt, and to out-maneuver competitors for impact players, sets a tone of competitive rebirth — one that could potentially shift the balance of power within the SEC if these players perform to expectations.

5. Departures and Roster Turnover Considerations

Of course, LSU’s massive influx of portal players follows a large exodus; nearly 30 players departed either through the portal or via graduation/NFL pursuit, and several additional transfers were initiated after coaching staff changes.

While turnover of this scale has risks — particularly in team cohesion and depth continuity — Kiffin’s experience with roster overhaul, paired with veteran leadership on both sides of the ball, suggests that LSU is well-positioned to integrate this new class and compete immediately.

Outlook: What LSU Gains and the Road Ahead

LSU’s 2026 transfer portal class is more than a collection of names — it is a strategic roster rebuild that blends impact starters, experienced depth, and developmental pieces under a coach renowned for offensive ingenuity and recruiting prowess. With key positions addressed — most notably quarterback, offensive line, linebacker, and secondary — LSU enters the 2026 season with elevated expectations.

If this portal class produces at or near its potential, LSU won’t just be rebuilding — it will be a challenger to the SEC elite and a team with clear College Football Playoff aspirations. In short, Kiffin’s first portal class may well be the most consequential offseason move in Baton Rouge since the 2019 national championship run.

Tony’s Take TIGERS LOADED AGAIN; PERFECT GAME PICKS NEARLY PERFECT TEAM NUMBER ONE

Defending national champion LSU has the horses and arms to to do it again, according to the first preseason college baseball poll of 2026.

The Tigers will be led by All American center fielder Derek Curiel and a pitching so removed from the Johnny Wholestraff of several years ago. The mounds men feature 21 arms, 14 from the right and seven lefties, with only one - Gavin Guidry - not 100% to srart the season next month.

Led by three right-handers - Casan Evans, Zac Vowens and Cooper Moore, the first two being named preseason All Americans as well as Curiel- Coach jay Johnson still has quality lefties to pair with the weekend starters plus more than enough for the midweek contests and what could be the Tigers’ strongest middle relief and closer staff ever. Between quality transfers and top 25 high school stars, LSU will have a pleasantly difficult time putting together a 12-man working pitching staff without making consistent changes to let the others have a chance to show their wares.

Names we have touted along with the teams’ coaches include William Schmidt, last years’ sometimes great, sometimes ordinary right hander, a sophomore, junior Jaden Noot, maybe the most talented player not to emerge from the pack, lefty Cooper Williams, who should be the midweek starter or could spell Moore, the Kansas transfer and Reagen Ricken, a 6’5”, 220-pound righty freshman ranked the 13th best prep hurler in 2025 and my “hunch” pick to emerge from the staff for a steady place in the rotation.

The bullpen should be set with Mavrick ivy, the best-named closer in the country and at 6’9”, 253 pounds, the most imposing, and 5th year senior Grant Fontenot, no slouch at 6’3”and 220 pounds. All this - and still eleven other quality arms - including six leftie.s What a conundrum for Johnson and his pitching coaches!

The 18 position players will feature three new infielders - i 3rd baseman Trent Caraway, senior second baseman Brayden Simpson and power hitting experienced lefty Zach Yorke. Yorke and another newcomer, freshman Mason Braun, will bring clout to a team that needs to beef up its power numbers. The new DH could be Seth Dardar, also a newcomer like those other four.

The Tigers could have five or six players with 15 to 25 homers during the 2026 season with Brayden Simpson, Zach Yorke, Omar Serna, Derek Curiel, “Monster” Steve Milam and Mason Braun. Braun and Cerna would have to work their way into the lineup where incumbent catcher Cade Arrambide resides and Zach Yorke is already penciled in at first.

Both Braun and Cerna are talented true freshmen so Johnson needs more time to evaluate them before they see the field on any regular basis. This lineup has the potential to rival the power numbers of the 2023 LSU National Champions. If Dardar produces at DH, there could be a seventh Tiger to potentially reach that number of dingers.

The starting lineup one through four is early season set with the returning regulars beginning with Milam, and Curiel, then the experienced newcomer Caraway and right-fielder Jake Brown at cleanup. The rest: Simpson batting 5th, Yorke 6th, Arrambide 7th, Dardar 8th and senior left fielder Chris Stanfield 9th.

TheTigers begin their season at home against Milwaukee February 13rh.

SPUD-TACULAR POTATOES

From its humble beginnings in the Andes Mountains of Peru, the potato has become one of the world’s staple foods. Baked, fried, mashed, or stuffed - you name it, and people will eat it. The average American consumes 126 pounds of potatoes each year. Sounds like a lot until you hear about the 745 pounds per capita consumption in Belarus!

The potato is a great vegetable. It is rich in protein, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin and Vitamin C. Plus, by selecting the right colored varieties, you can add antioxidants.

Varieties commonly grown in Mississippi include: ‘Red LaSoda’, ‘LaRouge’, ‘Superior’, ‘Atlantic’, ‘Norchip’, ‘Kennebec’, and ‘Yukon Gold.’ These all have white flesh except ‘Yukon Gold’ which is buttery yellow.

If you want to be the star of the potato patch this spring, plant some ‘All Red’ which has red skin and red flesh. ‘All Blue’ has blue skin and blue flesh. These plus some of your white-fleshed varieties will make a truly patriotic potato salad for the Fourth of July picnic. These specialty potatoes will have to be ordered.

January through early March is the best time to plant in Mississippi. You can also plant them in the fall if you can get seed stock. Potatoes prefer loose, loamy, well-drained soil. Planting in heavy clay can result in a bumpy looking potato. Plant your potatoes on a raised bed that is 12-15 inches high to prevent damage during heavy spring rains. Most roots and all tubers will develop at the same level and above the level that the original seed potato was planted.

Buy certified disease-free seed potatoes from local farm supply stores or through mail-order catalogs. Do not use potatoes from the grocery store (unless they are organically grown) because they have been treated with a chemical to inhibit sprouting. Cut the seed potatoes into 1-1/2 to 2 ounce seed pieces with at least one ‘eye’ on it. Store the cut potatoes in a warm spot for a few days to heal over the cut surface.

Plant your potatoes in a trench 10-12 inches deep with the seed pieces 10–12 inches apart and cover with 3-4 inches of soil. As the plants grow taller, gradually fill in the trench with soil around the plant. Some gardeners prefer to cover with straw mulch instead of soil. This makes harvesting easier. Each potato plant will produce 2-4 pounds of potatoes.

Potatoes are a cool-season crop and grow best when the day temperatures range from 60-65 degrees and night temperatures are between 45-55 degrees. Tuber production will stop when the temperatures exceed 85 degrees.

Harvest at the appropriate time for the type of potato you want. ‘New’ potatoes are harvested in May while baking potatoes are harvested sometime in June. Use a spade or fork to dig up the potatoes.

Immediately use any injured potatoes before they rot. Store the good potatoes in a cool (40-50 degree), dark, humid place. Remember the old-fashioned root cellar. Store the potatoes in the dark because light will cause then to turn green and make them inedible.

It is still cold at night but the soil is warm enough to get potatoes growing. Make the effort to grow your own potatoes and be the envy of the neighborhood. If you need more information, contact your local Extension office.

NATIONAL TRAIN YOUR DOG MONTH: BUILDING BETTER BONDS THROUGH TRAINING

January is National Train Your Dog Month, a perfect time to focus on one of the most important aspects of pet ownership: training. Whether you’ve just welcomed a new puppy into your home or are looking to help an adult dog brush up on their manners, training plays a vital role in creating a happy, healthy relationship between dogs and their families. As training is more than teaching commands like “sit” or “stay.” At its core, training helps dogs understand expectations, builds confidence, and strengthens communication between pets and their people.

Dogs thrive when they know what is being asked of them, and consistent training provides the structure they need to succeed. For many common behavioral challenges, training can make a life-changing difference. Behaviors such as jumping, pulling on the leash, chewing, and excessive barking are often signs of excitement, anxiety, or confusion rather than “bad behavior.” With patience, positive reinforcement, and the right guidance, dogs can learn appropriate ways to express themselves. For example, dogs who can respond to cues like “come,” “leave it,” or “drop it” are better equipped to avoid dangerous situations. These skills can be especially important in busy households, outdoor environments, or during emergencies.

Just as important, training is a powerful tool for enrichment. Learning new skills challenges a dog’s mind, helps burn energy, and boosts overall well-being. Training sessions can be short, fun, and rewarding for both dogs and their families, turning learning into quality bonding time. Know that it’s never too late to start training your dog. While puppies may soak up new lessons quickly, adult and senior dogs are absolutely capable of learning new behaviors. Training an older dog can be just as rewarding and can help address habits that may have developed over time.

National Train Your Dog Month is a reminder that training is not about perfection. It’s about progress, consistency, and meeting your dog where they are. Every small success builds toward a stronger relationship and a more confident, well-adjusted companion. If you are seeking low-cost training for your pup, explore local rescues and shelters that offer pet training services. The Louisiana SPCA Orleans Campus offers dog training courses for pups of all ages, helping them master everything from basic manners to addressing common reactive behaviors. Visit www.louisianaspca.org/pet-care to learn more and set your canine companion up for success this year.
