Speaking of that Penrith game, it was refreshing and encouraging to see the team put in a second half performance which would give any team in this division some cause for concern.

The new players that we have welcomed into the club, some of which may not exactly be called ‘new’, have given us a cutting edge which had been lacking at the start of the season. With the way results have gone more recently, minus the disappointing Stockton defeat, I do not envy Marc and Woody who will have to pick a starting eleven from such a strong pool of players.

I would also like to give a special mention to Matty Cornish. Not only did he score himself a goal on Wednesday night, it was also his 21st birthday. I can’t think of many better ways to celebrate a birthday than to score a goal in front of your home support.

We still have more work to do though as it is only September, however, we are always looking to improve things on and off the pitch.

Keep an eye out on the website and our social media channels as the club continues to grow as the season goes on.

Ryhope, having had a tricky start to their season, have been on something of a resurgence as of late and are now on a run of three wins in a row. The most impressive of which was their 3-1 victory against Sunderland RCA, a team which comfortably beat early pace setters Hebburn Town. They will no doubt be full of confidence so we will need to be at our best once again if we hope to take all three points.

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900–01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900.

After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance.

They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic.

The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958.

North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933– 34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3– 0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0.

A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign.

North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas).

The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker.

(North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was short-lived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium.

Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. Success on a regional level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Northern Premier League Premier Division, Blyth Spartans AFC. Northumberland Senior Cup final took place at St James Park.

After a mixed start to the 2017/18 Season Manager Brian Smith resigned from his managerial duties on 19th February. The club acted fast and appointed a new coaching team of Manager, Marc Nash, Assistant Manager, Anthony Woodhouse and Coach Chris Moore. It was decided that Wilf Keilty, Andy Gowans & Bob Scott would leave the club with immediate affect with the new coaching team put in place on the 20th February.

With the Bonny Blues wilting under the intense pressure, it was no surprise to see the Robins increase their lead further. In the 77th minute, McRoberts grabbed his second and the hosts fourth when he capitalised on a goalmouth scramble by side footing the ball into the bottom corner of the net from close range.

With the home supporters still celebrating their sides brilliant performance so far, both Suddick and Cornish, who was celebrating his 21st birthday, added two goals in two minutes to bring the hosts lead to 6 -0.

Every time the Robins brought the ball forwards, it seemed that a goal was almost certain to occur and in the 83rd minute, Suddick grabbed his second of the game when he fired the ball into the roof of the net after it was cut back from the touchline.

The youngster even had a chance of securing a brilliant hattrick with only two minutes to spare in the game, however, having broken through on goal, a good save from Forrester denied the winger his fourth goal of the season.

Soon afterwards, the referee saw mercy and brought the game to an end; meaning that the Robins will travel the short distance to face Whitley Bay in the Second Round of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup.

A terrific second half performance from the Robins saw them progress through to the Second Round of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup at the expense of Penrith.

McRoberts seemed to be in the mood today and in the 22nd minute, he once again tried his luck on goal, only for Forrester in the Penrith goal to pull off a smart save.

A goal early on in the first half from Sean McRoberts gave the hosts a deserved lead into the break.

The visitors, in search of a much needed victory, began to carve their way into the game and in the 31st minute, a good run from Rhys Graham was only stopped by excellent defending from Curtis Coppen.

However, two goals for Lewis Suddick, one more from McRoberts and efforts from Matty Cornish, Jordan Summerly and Ben Sampson in the second half meant bad news for the Bonny Blues.

Right from the opening whistle, the Robins, off the back of a disappointing defeat at Stockton, began to dominate the game and caused the Penrith defence a world of trouble.

The Robins support only had to wait until the tenth minute for the opening goal as McRoberts, who has impressed since signing from Blyth AFC, found himself in enough space to be able to strike the ball past the Penrith shot-stopper from six yards out.

Penrith should really have pulled a goal back in the 36th minute, however, Dan Lister, who was making his competitive debut in goal for the Robins, pulled off a magnificent triple save to preserve his side’s lead heading into the break.

As the second half began, it was clear that Shields were not satisfied with a single goal lead as right from the get go, Cornish had two good runs through the Penrith defence pulled back for offside.

However, a second goal was just on the horizon as in the 56th minute, a break down the left hand side forced the desperate Penrith defence to back peddle. Following a couple of desperate blocks, Summerly crashed his shot in off the post; with the referee judging the ball to have crossed the line.

Only two minutes later, Coppen came within a whisker of adding a third goal, only for his effort at the back post to skip inches wide of the post.

Following a breakup in play, the Robins finally got their third goal when substitute Sampson volleyed a good cross from the right hand side into the centre of the net; providing the hosts with their first goal off the bench so far this season in the 73rd minute.

Today we welcome Ryhope CW as we return to league action following our emphatic cup victory on Wednesday night. Ryhope have hit a bit of form with three excellent wins and have a man in form with James Ellis who has scored six goals in two games. We are in decent shape ourselves with four wins from five games including a tremendous all round performance against Shildon. Since that game we have had to play a couple without a recognised centre forward with Gary Day, Callum Johnston and Gareth Bainbridge all unavailable.

Wednesday's cup match gave us the opportunity to rest some players ahead of today and to get some game time into others. I thought we were rather sloppy after the early goal against Penrith and we let our standards dip which nearly allowed them back into the game. The second half was a different story as the players took on board the messages and really upped their game culminating in six more goals that were nicely spread around which is a confidence boost. The win set up an exciting derby in the next round so we look forward to that. In the meantime though our goal is to keep climbing the league and its a very tight pack ahead of us with almost everyone dropping points maybe with the exception of Dunston and Consett who have started very well indeed.

Matty Weirs (Forward): Tricky wide man, great feet and work rate, previously with Bishop Auckland and Crook Town Joey Melvin (Forward): Silky forward with a bit of pace, previously with Sunderland RCA and South Shields Joshua Home-Jackson (Forward): Fantastic work rate and aggression, previously with Sunderland youths, Chester-Le -Street, Whitby Town, Sunderland RCA and Seaham Red Star Michael Rae (Forward): Very experienced, top centre-forward offering physical strength and goalscoring pedigree.

HISTORY The club was founded by the coal miners of Ryhope in 1892 but it was not until the 1927-28 season that we won our first Wearside League title. The club enjoyed most of its success in the 1960s, winning the Wearside League on four occasions, the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup twice as well as the Sunderland Shipowners Cup and the League Challenge Cup during the decade.

In the 1967-68 season, the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the only time in the club’s history, losing 1-0 at home to Workington. The next successful season was in 1977-78 when we finished 3rd in the league, winning the League Cup and the Durham Challenge Cup for the only time in our history. Between 1988 and 1992, the club was known as Vaux Ryhope following a merger with Sporting Club Vaux.

In the 2009-10 season we won the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup for the first time in 44 years as well as finishing runners up in the Wearside League which was also our highest position in 44 years. However, the 2010-11 season was the most successful in the club’s history. We won all four competitions: the Wearside League title, Sunderland Shipowners Cup, Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and the League Cup. This was only the third time that any club had ever achieved this feat in the history of the Wearside League.

Remarkably, we repeated that feat again in the 2011-12 season, winning all four competitions and gaining promotion to the Northern League for the first time in our history.

We ended the season having only been defeated once in the last 70 Wearside League and Cup games. In our first season in the Northern League we finished second in Division Two and earned promotion to the first division. However, our ground failed the Northern League inspection and we were demoted back to the Wearside League after just one season.

2013-14 we finished second in the Wearside League but this time we did pass the Northern League inspection in March and earned promotion straight back up. In our final game of the season we beat Wearside League champions Stockton Town 2-0 in the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup Final. The season saw the club have three managerial departures, but Gary Pearson was appointed as the new manager for the return to the Northern League. In 2014-15 we finished in the top half of the Second Division which allowed us entry into the FA Cup for the first time in over 40 years. Under Gary Pearson and Stuey Gooden, in 2015-16 the club finished runners up in Northern League Division Two and gained promotion to Division One for the first time in the club’s 124 -year history. In their first season in the top flight in 2016-17 the team finished in 17th place. Under Gary and Stuey, Ryhope continued their improvement, finishing 11th in Northern League Division One to once again achieve the highest finish in the club’s history.

Media Manager, Sean Mulligan caught up with Paul Robinson this week to find out a bit more about himself and the team Who is your best mate at the club? Ormston - we have lots in common and have been on the same wavelength for a number of years now.

And who is the most skilful within the side? Me, Cam or Jordan Summerly.

Who do you think is the best trainer is the side? Pell Dog. The ultimate pro who the young lads should be looking up to. Top man.

And the worst is? Jordan Summerly or Dan Lister, he doesn’t even try to save shots in the warm up man coz he’s so big time.

Annoying.

Who will make the best management material? Well I have managed the toon to 20 consecutive Premier League titles on Football Manager but apart from me, Ormston, if he can be bothered and doesn’t have plans with Gemma on Saturdays when he stops playing.

Who is the Brain of Britain in the squad (most Intelligent)?

Jack Donn seems quite switched on. He comes to training dressed smartly in a tie so I’m assuming he’s clever despite that horrible ginger tash.

Who has the worst Dress Sense? Jordan. Nose rings, t-shirts that are three sizes too big and awful trainers. Not cool.

Who is the man in the squad who doesn’t take the plaudits and just gets on with his job? Gareth Bainbridge. Never about him and he just does what is needed with minimal fuss.

And who would you say is the hard man of the squad? I am yet to lose a fight but I wouldn’t want to come up against Liam Mc as he’s a charver and he’s probably been in loads of scraps.

Who in the squad has the best & worst motor? Anyone who has Pell Dog on their number plate is a legend and has the best car.

Not sure on worst. All to a decent standard.

Who spends the longest getting ready after a game? Some don’t even get a shower man!!!!! Sudds as it takes time to look that beautiful.

And about yourself- What is your proudest achievement in your career? Had a long career in non league and stayed relatively injury free and met some brilliant people over the years. But Wembley three times in a row. Them days were the best and they won’t be beaten.

Do you have any pre-match superstitions? To winge about having to warm up, every week, without fail. Worst part of football by a mile is warming up. Minging.
