President’s Message

Dear NRCC Members, First, the Board has, pursuant to the Bylaws, appointed Rich Colabella to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Bill Powell. Rich just finished his three year term and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to assist the Board with the many issues facing the club. The Athletic Center project is moving forward with our loan package having been provided to several banking institutions that demonstrated an interest in funding the project. Actual working drawings are going out to bid. More details will be provided at the annual meeting on March 11, 2021. The Membership Preview program has been quite successful, with a boost from the tremendous reaction to the Club being featured on the Golf Channel during the College Tournament. The Board has temporarily postponed the sale of Treasury memberships. Please see Nicole’s message in this newsletter for further updates. If you haven’t already heard, the Golf Committee has elected to switch this year’s Men’s Member-Guest tournament with the Men’s Member-Member. We hope that by September many more people will be vaccinated and as a result, guests will be able to safely travel to NRCC. Thanks to the work of Rick Siemons and the Golf Committee, we have added 4 new outside (Monday) tournaments to the existing tournaments, which really helps our bottom line. Speaking of COVID protocols, the club continues to adhere to

the State and local protocols. Please continue to social distance, wear masks, and observe the rules that we have put in place to protect our membership and staff. We are aware of the issues concerning tee times and appreciate your cooperation. Hopefully, as things get better with COVID and with Daylight Savings coming this month, we will be able to be more accommodating. That said, please continue to share carts when possible and do not remove the dividers ( many of which have been damaged) causing increased costs to the club. I again want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of our Management Team and our employees who, every day, try to make your experience at NRCC enjoyable. I also want to thank the Membership for its unwavering and continued support of the Club, from attending events, coming to “Taco Tuesday" and Friday night pizza, to resuming outside dining. We are extremely fortunate to be able to keep the Club, course and courts open. Please continue to observe our various rules and regulations and be considerate of your fellow members. Don’t forget that this year's annual meeting will be held March 11, 2021 via Zoom. Manager’s Message

Dear North Ranch Members, We are excited to announce that while we wait for our permanent guard gate, which is bundled with the plans for our athletic center being approved through the city, we will be implementing a temporary guard shack, manned with security in our driveway. The guard shack will be located after you enter the driveway where you can turn left into the lower lot. (See photo below). We are also ordering member decal stickers for you to place inside your car on the left-hand corner of your windshield. This will help members from being stopped each time they come to the Club and be asked for their name and or member number. Additionally, the guard shack will have a master member list as well as an approved guest list. We are working to set up an efficient way for members to notifying the Club of any guests that may be joining them on the property - more information on all of this to come! We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to secure unauthorized access to our property. Thank you to one of our members who recently notified us of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. With their help we were able to identify the vehicle on film and turn over images of the vehicle to the Ventura County Sherriff ’s department. We appreciate our members being alert of their surroundings.

Dear Members, It has been a very exciting and busy time in the Membership office this month! The Southwestern Tournament covered on Golf Channel brought the Club so much attention that Rick and myself could barely keep up! The national coverage paired with the popularity of golf during this time has accelerated sales so much that we will be updating our preview program and increasing the price! Moving forward, the new Preview Membership will offer a 60-day incentive versus the previous 90 day, and the initiation fee will go from $20,000 to $25,000 if a preview member applies within the first 60 days of membership. If a preview prefers to wait 12 months, the initiation fee will be $30,000. With that said, for those on the list to sell, this does mean that prices for memberships will fluctuate and the Club's current selling prices at the time of your sale may not be reflective of the amount you would receive back. If you have any additional questions about this, please call me directly, and I am happy to explain this further. MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: The following individuals have submitted applications for membership to be considered by a vote of the NRCC Board. Dr. Robert O’Boyle & Elizabeth O’Boyle as Full Equity Members Occupation: Robert is a Pediatrician/Teacher (Conejo Valley). Robert and Elizabeth reside in Agoura Hills and look forward to using the Club! Robert is already playing twice a week, and we look forward to having him out! • Tim & Kristin McLain as Full Equity Members Occupation: SVP/Harvest Small Business Finance, he loves golf. Tim and Kristin reside in Westlake Village and have 3 children, Max 20, Katie 20 and Megan 17. Tim loves playing golf and looking forward to bringing his family to the Club! • Gregory & Carol Davidian as Full Equity Members Gregory resides in Westlake Village is knows the Club well. and is looking forward to calling North Ranch Country Club his new home. • James & Theresa Lyon as Athletic Members Occupation: James is a VP & Senior Portfolio Manager at UBS and Theresa is a 1st Grade Teacher at Carden Conejo School. They currently reside in Westlake Village. James loves this community and was an AYSO Commissioner for 7 years. They have one son, J. T. Lyon, and we look forward to seeing them out here. • Ed & Rusty Robertson as Full Equity Members Occupation: Robertson Schwartz Agency (Marketing & Fundraising). Ed and Rusty reside in the hills of Topanga and are heavily involved with Stand Up to Cancer. Ed has been a member of several country clubs and looks forward to getting out there and meeting our members. He has already said how much he is enjoying the Club and looking forward to all that North Ranch has to offer. • Golan & Ronda Nissim as Full Equity Members Occupation: Golan is a chiropractor at Performance Care Sports Medicine & Rehab and Ronda is a R.N. at Kryger Institute of Plastic Surgery. They reside in Thousand Oaks and have 3 children, Zachary, Ashlyn and Landan. Golan and his sons can be seen on the golf course and look forward to making North Ranch Country Club their home away from home. • Jordan Simon as an Associate Full Member Occupation: Martial Arts Instructor/Studio Owner (young entrepreneur). Jordan currently resides in Thousand Oaks and loves golf. He is looking forward to getting to know our members and playing more golf. • Eric Kinsey as a Full Equity Member Occupation: CEO/Forward Progress Staffing. Eric resides in Camarillo and has 2 children, Mikenna age 18 and Tanner age 15. When Eric is not at the Club he also donates his time to Rain Communities, a charity in Camarillo that helps homeless families). Eric has really enjoyed his time here and the friends he has made. • Richard Benne as a Full Equity Member Occupation: Professor/Dean Emeritus, Department Chair and Senior Management/Senior Government & Project Liaison. Currently, Richard resides in LA but plans to move to the area soon! When he is not playing golf, he donates his


time to The Colburn School in LA (performing arts school with a focus on music and dance). Food & Beverage

With our virtual blind tasting around the corner, we thought it would be fun to dive in to the process and objective of blind tasting as well as giving some tips on how to improve. Objective To make the best guess possible of what the wine is. While there are so many wines produced from all over the world, certain grape varieties and regions have a certain tell. Grapes of the Bordeaux family (i.e., Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc) tend to have this greenness characteristic that is reminiscent to green bell pepper or sometimes jalapeno. When you are blind tasting and you pick up one of those “clues” it narrows down what the wine could be, assuming that the wine is typical of its variety and region. Certain clues are much more important than others. For instance, picking up on white flowers in a wine is not nearly as helpful as say, buttery aromas. Why? Buttery aromas tend to be a by-product of malolactic fermentation, which is generally only practiced with a couple of varieties while white flowers can be in nearly every white wine. The objective is to find these “big clues” and then make an educated guess as to what the wine is. Process Sight, Nose, Palate, Structure. Each one serves its purpose. Sight can help identify if the wine is from a thick-skinned variety or a thin-skinned variety (Cabernet Sauvignon vs. Pinot Noir). It can also help with identifying age. Does the wine look vibrant and clear or is it turning brown at the rim? Older wines tend to develop a brown hue. Nose Besides structure, I think this is the most important part of tasting. This is where you find the “big clues”. • Is the wine fruit dominant or is it earthy? – Fruit for new world, earth for old world. • Does the fruit smell ultra-ripe or tart? Ultra-ripe warmer climate, tart cool climate. • What is the intensity of the nose? Is it subtle or does it jump out of the glass? If subtle, probably old world/ cooler climate; if intense, probably new world/warmer climate. • What other aromas do you smell? Butter? Think oakaged wines: Chardonnay, Bordeaux Blanc, White Rhone.

Palate At this point, you are tasting what you smell. Do you taste everything you smelled? Did anything change from the nose to the palate? I.e., did the ripe fruit you smelled taste tart? Might be a new world wine just from a cooler climate. Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is a great example of a wine that smells very ripe on the nose and tastes tart on the palate. Structure How does the wine react when you taste it? Does your mouth water intensely? Does it dry up? Depending on these two questions, you narrow down what the wine could be. For instance, high acidity is common in only a few varieties (Riesling, Chenin Blanc). Let us look at tannin for reds. Only a few grapes have high tannin (Nebbiolo, Sangiovese). After you gather all your clues, you begin the process of identifying which clues are the “big ones” and take a guess of what the wine is. Some tips: • Taste extremes - Taste wines that are structurally extremely different. For instance, taste a Russian River Pinot Noir and a Barolo side by side. This will help you identify low tannin vs. high tannin. • Taste wines that are similar - I tend to mix up new world Grenache and Pinot Noir sometimes. They are both similar in color, both do not have a lot of tannin and both can produce ripe wines. The purpose of this is to find out what separates the two. Pinot Noir is much more earthy in the sense of forest floor and mushroom aromas and Grenache tends to have more savory tones and meatiness to it. Alcohol is also something to pay attention to. Grenache tends to have much more alcohol than most Pinot Noirs. • Create a set of characteristics - For instance, Syrah will most likely display the following: Meatiness, Savory Tones, Pepper. When I am blind tasting and I taste two or more of these, I am most likely going to believe it is Syrah. By setting up a list of “big clues” you can decide what wine matches the best with what you’re describing from the glass. • Have fun - There is no need to get really complicated about wine. Its just grapes! 7

North Ranch Country Club had the pleasure of assisting the Westlakers with their 3 Course Meal for their Annual Installation Dinner. We created a custom menu with Chef Karl, and guests were given a pickup time for their hot takeout. Dear Members, As I write this, I can’t believe it is going to be March…one year from the first shut down. What a crazy year it has been! On behalf of the Tennis Department, including front desk staff, pro staff and maintenance crew, I would like to thank you again for your generosity and patience navigating through this all. We are all so appreciative. As things start to open up again, we are looking forward to doing more socials as soon as appropriate so please stay tuned. We will have a Combo Match Day for ladies on March 13th. Please sign up online for a day of matches against members you wouldn’t normally play against. As you know, we are only doing special orders at the moment in the pro shop. Please stop by and see if there is anything you like with the remaining inventory as it is priced to sell. With limited events in 2020 due to the pandemic, we are anticipating a high participation rate for our 2021 events. I recommend that you do not delay in signing up. There was one major change to the Tournament calendar that should be noted. Due to the pandemic, the Golf committee thought it would be more viable to host the Men’s Member-Member in May and postpone the Men’s Member-Guest to September. He knocked in a 6 iron from 150 yards out! • Doyle Woods carded his first career ace on Valley #3! He hit a 5 wood from 158 yards that look good all the way. Unfortunately, Doyle didn’t physically see it go in, but had a big surprise waiting for him when he got to the hole. RULES CORNER Bunker Local Rule Clarification - As long as there are no bunker rakes on the courses due to Covid-19 protocol, NRCC has adopted the following Local Rule: A player may take free relief anywhere in the bunker despite where it lies (does not have to be in a disturbed area. i.e., footprint or divot). The player may lift, clean, and place the ball at the nearest point that is not closer to the hole and the ball must remain in the bunker. Which in many cases the nearest point would only be 2"-6" inches no closer to the hole, not a full club-length. A player may take relief from a plugged lie but must place the ball as nearly as possible to where it originally came to rest. I.e., If the ball is plugged in the face of the bunker, then the ball must be placed on the face of the bunker as nearly as possible to where the ball was plugged. 14 North Ranch Country Club | March 2021


Lakes #8 pond marking has been changed from a Yellow Penalty area to a Red Penalty area. The biggest difference will be if a player’s ball carries the red line greenside and then rolls back into the penalty area, the player may take relief starting from where the ball last crossed the margin of the penalty area, dropping within two club lengths of that point but NOT closer to the hole than where it last crossed the margin. If the ball rolls back into the penalty area after two drops you may place the ball. There is no relief or redrop if you are standing in the penalty area after your drop, only if your ball goes into the penalty area. Please note that a player MUST be virtually certain that the ball carried the red penalty line greenside before taking relief greenside. 5 Relief Options for a Red Penalty Area • Replay the shot from where it was originally played from. • Play the ball from the Penalty area. • Keep the point of entry and the hole in line with one another and drop the ball as far back on that line as needed. • Two-club lengths, no closer to the hole from where the ball last crossed the margin of the Penalty area. • Play from the drop zone. NEW NRWGA MEMBERS Vera Stewart has been a member of NRCC for a number of years but focused more on her tennis game instead of golf. She has since changed over to golf and is enjoying meeting and playing with fellow lady golfers. She is a dentist and the primary member. Sharon Crowder is also a long time member of North Ranch but only recently join the women’s group. She is a retired orthodontist. Welcome ladies. POSTING NINE HOLES AND EIGHTEEN HOLE SCORES A player’s handicap index will update the day after a score is posted. A handicap is required to participate in all NRWGA events and tournaments including Sweeps games. All ninehole and eighteen-hole scores must be posted for handicap. Post 9 if you play 7 holes but less than 13. Post 18 if you play 13 or more holes. If you do not finish holes, score NET PAR. The only time you score NET DOUBLE BOGEY is when you pick up on a hole. Do not post if you play ALONE, or if you are practicing on the course and dropping balls. Do not post if you are in a scramble, a shamble, or a modified chapman.
