Jarvez Hall, Boardman Chamber luncheon guest speaker The June membership luncheon will be on Wednesday, June 18h at noon at the Port of Morrow Riverfront Center. Our guest speaker will be Jarvez Hall of Small Business Majority. He will be sharing information about the new healthcare law, the Affordable Care Act, and what it means for Oregon’s small businesses.

Jarvez will also focus on both federal and state provisions to help local small business owners understand how the law will affect them. This is a luncheon you won’t want to miss! Cost for lunch is $10, and is catered by Judy Scott’s Chuckwagon! An RSVP is required by Monday, June 16th- (541)4813014.

Doctor Catherine Prindle is a persistent learner, thanks to her parents, she says. “My parents never had the chance to go to college, but each of their seven children are college graduates, and they always emphasized ‘Keep learning, keep learning, keep learning!’” Prindle spent seven years studying for this degree (a doctorate in education, EdD) from Northcentral University, located in Arizona. She is effusive about the professors, especially one who became her mentor and was on the committee that approved Prindle’s doctorate degree. Prindle has the original certificate hanging in her living room; she made a copy to hang in her classroom, and also made a copy to send to her parents. Prindle originally grew up in LaCross, Wisconsin, where she studied for her Bachelor’s degree. She left home after teaching for a half year, and her adventures took her to Round Mountain, Nevada, where she taught for two years. Her first husband (also a teacher) was originally from Oregon, so they migrated north, and ended up in Boardman in 1988. Married twenty years to Ron (also a teacher), she has taught kindergarten and 3rd grades at Sam

Boardman Elementary, and now teaches 4th grade at Windy River Elementary. Prindle is enthusiastic about online education, having obtained her Master’s degree from Grand Canyon University, an Arizona school, which she attended online. Prindle also studied for her doctorate degree online. Her two children live in LaGrande, where son Brendan age 30 is in private enterprise. Daughter Landi, age 28 is in her last year of studying for her nursing degree at Eastern Oregon University. Prindle waited to start working towards her advanced degrees until her children were in high school, she says. Part of obtaining her degree meant conducting a study with her 4th grade students last year. Prindle had to obtain each student and each parent’s approval to be included in the study. She also had

to obtain approval from her principal and the superintendent of Morrow County School District. Prindle’s dissertation is “A qualitative Case Study Exploring SelfEfficacy and its influence on 4th grade mathematics students. Prindle was excited about the amount of support she had from her students, parents and other faculty members. “I’m still not quite used to not studying anymore,” Prindle says. But she has plenty of hobbies to amuse her: she quilts, knits, embroiders, plays the piano, the guitar and violin, and loves to garden. “I also want to write books,” she adds. These would be books used in schools with a book for the student and a syllabus for the teacher to help the students learn. Summer vacation for Prindle means a trip to Wisconsin to visit family, and she’s taking her published dissertation along to show her family.
